Worcester rep quietly resigns Following days of House Ethics Committee hearings believed to be focused on him, state Rep. John Fresolo of Worcester resigned yesterday, effective immediately.

Massachusetts Lt. Governor Tim Murray announced yesterday he will resign from his post in June to head the Worcester Chamber of Commerce.

According to reports, Murray could earn more than $200,000 a year as the chamber’s president and CEO. “It’s about growing jobs and building partnerships. This is something I know I will enjoy.

It is consistent with what I’ve been doing personally, so it makes sense,” he said yesterday at a press conference.

His term was set to end in January 2015, but his last day will now be June 2, and he will start his new job on June 3.

Murray said the chamber approached him about the position in March and that he was not looking for career change at the time.

“I know that change is the nature of life, and as I imagine, I’ll keep working on issues that I’m passionate about while being close to home,” he said, describing the opportunity as unique. “The chamber post is a

Church head charged with extortion, bribery The head of a Beacon Hill church was indicted yesterday morning for allegedly taking money from the church and intimidating other members during his time in power.

Edward MacKenzie Jr., 54, of Weymouth, faces charges including racketeering, mail fraud conspiracy, extortion and bribery, according to the U.S. Attorney’s office.

director of operations for the Boston Society of the New Jerusalem church, also known as the Church on the Hill, since 2003.

The city’s new innovation center, now called District Hall, will partially open next month in an area that city leaders hope will foster the next big idea.

Mayor Thomas Menino took a tour yesterday of District Hall, located in the Fort Point area now referred to as the Innovation District.

The one-story, 12,000-squarefoot building will be equipped with meeting and event spaces and short term space for startup labs.

The Hall will open in midJune with events like Mobile Monday Boston, a large gathering of startups and entrepreneurs in the mobile technology space, and LearnLaunchX,

a series of meetups for startups working on educational technology. About 275 people are expected on a typical Thursday.

The Hall “is now going to be ... one of the most important centers of activity in Boston,” said Tim Rowe, the founder of the Cambridge Innovation Center, which along with nonprofit the Venture Cafe will oversee its daily operations.

Trio of British pals organize ‘One Run’ through America One Fund. Three runners are working from a barn in England to get thousands of people to hoof it from California to Boston.

Danny Bent, Kate Treleaven and Jamie Hay were hunkered in their rural home in Devon, England, last month, listening to a radio broadcast of the Boston Marathon when news broke of the deadly bombings.

“Everything went silent,” said Bent. “We looked at each other and said, ‘We have to do something.’”

1,000 runners will join together for One Run for Boston, a 3,000mile relay across 14 states, to raise money for the One Fund.

The relay will set off from Venice Beach on June 7, then travel through Arizona, New

Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York and Connecticut before finally passing the baton to Boston. “(Supporters) quite appreciate ... that people on other side of the world are really interested in helping out,” said Bent, 34. “It’s always quite charming when they hear our accents.

People ask, ‘Are you in LA?’ or ‘Are you in Boston?’ but really we live in a tiny little quirky village in England.”

So far they’ve raised $3,000 and are hoping to raise $300,000 by the time the relay finishes in Boston on June 30.

British soldier hacked to death in busy London street Vicious murder.

A startling video aired by Britain’s ITV network shows a man suspected in the beheading of a British soldier on a busy London street yesterday near the scene of the slaughter.

Speaking in a London accent, the man says to the camera: “I apologize that women had to witness this today, but in our country, our women see this happening all the time.”

In other parts of the video, said to be too shocking to show, he reportedly says: “This British soldier is an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.”

The British government called an emergency meeting of Cobra, its highest-level anti-

terrorism task force, after the serving soldier was hacked to death.

The soldier, said by witnesses to be wearing a T-shirt supporting Help for Heroes — the charity that raises funds for injured U.K. service men

and women — was attacked by two men near the Woolwich barracks area of London.

The BBC reported that the soldier was first hit by a car driven by the two men, after which they attacked him with knives and machetes.

Witnesses said attempts were made to behead the soldier.

The attackers reportedly waited for 20 minutes while specially armed police units arrived. The men then attacked police officers and were shot, reports said. The latest reports said both were in local hospitals, at least one of them in serious condition.

The calling of a meeting of the Cobra committee is a strong indication that the British government regards the attack as terror related.

Islamic fundamentalists have long threatened to attack British service personnel in a

guerilla-style attack. Terrorist videos have also featured British Muslims threatening to behead a U.K. soldier.

Nick Robinson, political editor of the BBC, confirmed the British government was treating the attack as terror related.

The attackers shouted “Allahu Akbar,” Arabic for “God is Great,” during the attack and while confronting police, witnesses said.

A witness named James told London’s LBC radio: “We saw clearly two knives, meat cleavers. They were big kitchen knives like you would use in a butcher’s. They were hacking at this poor guy. We thought they were trying to remove organs from him.”

Terrorists resorting to solitary tactics The killing by U.S. and allied forces of hundreds of alQaida operatives in the last two years has reportedly weakened the terror organization substantially, and forced its followers to resort to lone-wolf-style attacks such as the one yesterday.

The American-born Islamic cleric Anwar alAwlaki said as much before he was killed in a U.S. drone strike in 2011. In 2007, a plot was uncovered among a group of British-born Muslims to kidnap and behead a British soldier.

Centered in Birmingham, which has one of the biggest Muslim populations in the country, the group planned to snatch a soldier off the streets and take him to a safe house. There, according to intelligence intercepts, the man would be blindfolded, handcuffed, ordered to make a video demanding the withdrawal of foreign troops from Iraq and then beheaded.

The Internal Revenue Service official at the center of a scandal about extra tax scrutiny of conservative groups told Congress yesterday she had done nothing wrong but invoked her constitutional right not to answer questions.

Uh-oh, is this a rare misstep for the beloved film star and hot Internet meme that is Ryan Gosling? It looks like his new film, “Only God Forgives,” suffered multiple walkouts and boos due to the film’s over-the-top violence during a recent screening at Cannes.

But a few reviewers have defended the film. The Guardian gave it five stars with the caveat that it might “have people running for the exits.”

Gosling is perhaps the only celebrity not at the famed festival. Cannes director Thierry Fremaux read a letter from Gosling, which apologized for his absence. “Can’t believe I’m not in Cannes. I’m on week three shooting my film in Detroit. Miss you all.”

Lest Gosling get upset, getting booed at Cannes isn’t the worst. The audience there once famously booed “Taxi Driver,” so what do they know?

Clean, sober — and not entirely boring Comedy sequel.

The threatened ďŹ nal “Hangoverâ€? tries something dierent, but it’s not all bad.

The second “Hangover� was the most repetitive sequel since “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.� Every beat from the original was hit, but with superficial differences: Bangkok instead of Vegas, a monkey instead of a baby, a ladyboy instead of Heather Graham.

But there’s no reason that repeating the same joke with variations should be a crime.

They might well have done the same thing a third time — yet “The Hangover Part III� absolutely breaks from formula, playing like weak fan fiction unaccountably directed by and starring the team that made the original.

That said, there are stray moments of semi-invention.

As threatened, this time there is no rohypnol-laced binge session. Our heroes — vaguely douchey Phil (Bradley Cooper), uptight closet transgressive Stu (Ed Helms) and remorseless man-child/possible pedo Alan (Zach Galifianakis) — are simply victims of what we’re told was an elaborate series of events set inextricably in motion during the first one.

It’s likely the series’ many fans are going to hate this threequel because it isn’t like the others and isn’t very funny. (Neither are the other

two, but whatever.) Occasional attempts at deepening the series fail because the writers have attempted to humanize the one character who under no circumstances should have been humanized: Galifianakis’ Alan, who ought to have become weirder and scarier, not more fragile and sad.

Honestly, none of the “Hangovers� are great comedies. But they excel at other genres. At heart, they’re mysteries, and pretty good ones.

They’re also incredibly dark, with death, perhaps a violent one, always around the corner. “Part III� goes even darker, opening with the needless decapitation of a certain animal.

For about two seconds, “Part III� feels like it could end with our heroes dead. If it were actually that kind of movie, there would be little reason to complain.

But Lissie is in her car, having just shot a music video in her hometown of Rock Island, Ill. She shares that she’s been on the road for days, promoting her yet-to-be-released sophomore album, which she says is more straight-up rock than her previous indie-folk-centered efforts.

What’s the video about?

I feel like where you’re from has such a big part to do with who you are. We just walked around to lots of different sites that were memorable and special to me. A friend of mine is a police officer, and once it got dark he turned on his police lights, which made some really cool lighting.

What’s it been like writing this album?

I’ve had quite a bit of downtime. So the last nearly two years, I’ve been writing and kind of cultivating some of my other interests.

What kind of interests?

I just got a road bike. I’m not, like, a super awesome pro yet, but I really got into riding.

About 20 miles is the most I’ve ridden. And I’ve really gotten addicted to so many TV shows.

I’ve gotten really into wine. I drink a lot of wine.

What shows are you into?

Oh, it’s like what shows am I not into! I love “Game of Thrones.” I’m really excited about “Arrested Development” coming back. I also like “Nashville” a lot. I made my first record in Nashville, and I think they do a good job of showing the city. So yeah, basically I

I did too! I mean, I like that song, and I like them, so I don’t mean this in a bad way, but I almost feel like that trend has sort of ended. I think the Avett Brothers and Old Crow Medicine Show started it, and were doing it, and it wasn’t mainstream, and then Mumford and Sons really brought that into the mainstream consciousness, which is really great, because it opened the doors for a lot of bands, but I’m not sure that that’s where it will stay.

Right. What do you think is going to be the next wave?

My prediction is that the guitar solo is kind of coming back.

I’ve been listening to a lot of Hall & Oates, and that music has kind of been resonating with me again. It’s kind of dramatic music, and it’s kind of a little cheesy, and it’s got the epic guitar solos. I think it’s so emotionally evocative, it makes you really feel like “yeah!”

I love your cover of Kid Cudi’s “Pursuit of Happiness.” Who would you want to cover one of your songs?

I think it would be cool if A$AP Rocky covered me. I guess he did cover me — he sampled me, but somebody in a totally different genre. Like Metallica, but that would never happen. I love Metallica.

It’s cramped, it’s colorful, it’s overwhelming: It’s the North End, fit to burst with life on a sunny day. The hub of Boston’s Little Italy is at the top of Hanover Street, at its intersection with Richmond and Parmenter.

This is where Quattro — which took over the Il Panino Express spot this spring — stands, inviting passersby into its cool interior of sleek, pale marble, wall-to-wall white and floor-toceiling windows that connect it to the bustle of the street (when weather permits).

Quattro’s minimal — but appealing — menu offers Italian comfort food. Yes, there’s pizza.

The hand that feeds Quattro is the latest venture in Italian native Frank DePasquale’s empire, and each operation “feeds� another: bread is baked at Bricco Panetteria, pasta is made at Depasquale’s Pasta Shoppe, and gelato is mixed up at the Gelateria and Cannoli Factory, handily nearby at 272 Hanover St. Handy, because Quattro doesn’t have a dessert menu.

A simple crust is cooked in seconds in Quattro’s custom-made brick oven. The chewy dough is seared with mozzarella and topped with figs, goat cheese and a generous pile of arugula dressed with lemon and a dash of salt. The flavor proportion is perfect: a touch of sweet, a hint of sour, a tinge of bitter.

Succulent, lightly battered stuffed zucchini flowers are paired with a crunchy salad of yellow zucchini, onion and marinated red pepper. Another appetizer of fluffy green Boston Bibb leaves and crisp, bitter purple radicchio is splashed with balsamic vinegar, forming a regal-looking salad of wonderfully contrasting textures.

A bowl of gnocchi (made from potato flour, not durum wheat) gets the Caprese treatment with burrata (slightly melted from the heat of the dumplings), a fresh cherry tomato sauce and an oversized sprig of basil as aromatic as it is tasty. They don’t call Italian the Mother Cuisine for nothing.
