In New York City, hotter temps a deadly matter Climate change. The new study says that warmer temperatures will cause more heat-related deaths. Though New Yorkers wouldn’t know it from the damp Memorial Day weekend, summer heat in Manhattan could be turning deadly, according to a study out of Columbia University. Researchers at the university’s Earth Institute and the Mailman School of Public Health are warning that deaths in Manhattan linked to warmer temperatures due to global warming may result in a 20 percent increase in temperature-related deaths by the 2020s. In some worst-case scenarios, according to the
Earth Institute, the rate of heat-related deaths could rise by 90 percent by the 2080s. “This serves as a reminder that heat events are one of the greatest hazards faced by urban populations around the globe,” Earth Institute climate scientist Radley Horton said. 2012 was apparently the warmest year on record in Manhattan. While projections for the future vary, the study anticipates steep average increases: 3.3 to 4.2 degrees Fahrenheit by the 2050s, and 4.3 to 7.1 degrees by the 2080s. The Earth Institute noted that New York already takes steps to mitigate warming by planting trees, making roofs reflective and opening cooling centers in the summer where people can seek refuge.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly and Senator Chuck Schumer called on the National Parks Service on Monday to create a security station at Battery Park to screen visitors before they board a ferry to the Statue of Liberty. The NYPD has previously disagreed with the Park Service’s decision not to have screening prior to passengers’ boarding of
the ferry at Battery Park, and their assertion that having screening at the station at Ellis Island is adequate. Earlier this month Kelly wrote a letter to Sally Jewell, Secretary of the Department of the Interior. “Al Qaeda and those who shares its violent jihadist ideology … have long shown an interest in targets that represent our
country,” Kelly said. Kelly insisted that a staffed screening area would prevent crowding and not interfere with ticket sales. “I know the NPS cares deeply about the monument and its visitors,” Schumer said, “but in this case I think they’ve made a mistake and should rethink this policy change.” DANIELLE TCHOLAKIAN

New parents. Some area hospitals are expecting a baby bonanza after superstorm Sandy. New York residents will soon be seeing a lot of new babies on city streets. Nine months after superstorm Sandy left many in the tristate area cooped up and without power, area hospitals are preparing for a deluge of “Sandy babies,” the New York Times reported this weekend. One expectant mother, Meaghan Murphy, explained to the Times that “with no power, no TV, no lights, even without that much food, there was not much else to do.” Murphy apparently added that her husband, Patrick, “is so handsome.” “I couldn’t resist,” she told the Times.

The Times credited “inoperable” elevators and “deluged” lobbies as part of the reason for the impending baby boom. The Times cited a sociological study taken in rural India that reportedly found that with increased access to electricity, birth rates dropped. The same report notes that “no statistically sound effect on births was found after the 1965 power failure in the Northeast,” and that there was actually a drop in the birth rate from the year after the 2003 black out that knocked out power in the city for days. The Journal of Population Economics also reportedly found that there was an uptick in births after minor storms, but that there was the opposite following much bigger storms like Sandy.

Birth rates in New York apparently typically peak in July, but the director of the division of gynecology at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center, Jacques Moritz, reportedly told the Times that they expect to see an increase of 10 to 20 percent at the end of July. compared to the same
period last year. •
New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center chief of obstetrics Amos Drunebaum reportedly said that his hospital expects an even greater increase from the year before, estimating a 20 to 30 percent rise in the number of births.

On Face the Nation, host Bob Schieffer tried to get Senator Charles Schumer to talk about his former protege, Anthony Weiner — to no avail. When asked if he would support Weiner, Schumer replied, ”I’m not commenting on the mayor’s race or on Anthony Weiner’s race.”
The city’s new bikeshare program had its first theft on Sunday, one day before the official launch of the program. The thief rode off on one of the blue Citi Bike cycles at approximately 6 p.m. as workers delivered a batch of the bikes to a rack at Second Avenue and 25th Street, The New York Post reports.

US urges garment buyers to stay engaged with Bangladesh Safety. A series of deadly incidents at factories in Bangladesh has focused global attention on safety in the industry. International garment buyers, particularly those in the United States, have a crucial role to play in ensuring the safety of Bangladesh’s garment workers, a senior government official said yesterday. “On the labor issue, absolutely — buyers have a critical role, and they must be engaged,” U.S. Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Wendy R. “Ultimately, success will depend on the will and commitment of industry, government, civil society and everyday Bangladeshis to come together to change the culture of workplace safety and worker rights in Bangladesh,” she added. REUTERS

Campus. Tech companies construct their own buildings that match the collaborative way they work. While much of corporate America is retrenching on the real estate front, the four most influential technology companies in America are each planning headquarters that could win a Pritzker Architecture Prize for hubris. Amazon.com on Friday revealed plans for three verdant bubbles in downtown Seattle, joining Apple’s circular “spaceship,” Facebook’s Frank Gehrydesigned open-office complex and a new Google-
plex on the list of planned trophy offices. “It signals a desire, a statement, to say that we’re special, we’re different. We have changed the world and we are going to continue to change it,” said Margaret O’Mara, associate professor of history at the University of Washington, who has written about the building of Silicon Valley. “It’s also a reflection of robust bank accounts. They have a lot of cash.” Historically, however, when a company becomes preoccupied with the grandeur of its premises, it often signals a high point in its fortunes. These fantastical buildings may end up as little more than costly monuments to vanity and a loss of focus on the core business that made for success
in the first place. “I’ve been thinking the Apple spaceship is going to get nicknamed the ‘Death Star’ because the project is so big and the timing is so bad,” said hedge fund manager Jeff Matthews of Ram Partners. The building is coming to fruition just as Apple’s product cycles may be maturing, he explained. “It is such a classic contrary indicator that you just get the shakes.” He no longer holds Apple stock. Around a thousand farright protesters shouting “Muslim killers, off our streets marched through central London yesterday against a backdrop of swelling anti-Muslim feeling following the killing of a British soldier last week. In a tense but largely peaceful demonstration, supporters of the far-right English Defence League rallied outside Prime Minister David Cameron’s residence waving placards and shouting anti-Islamic obscenities. “Islamic extremism is probably the No. 1 threat
to Britain, said Ben Gates, a protester. Other demonstrators chanted, “Muslim bombers off our streets. Another protester, Samuel Hames, said of Rigby: “He survived his tour of foreign lands and [came] home to his family — and what happened to him is disgusting. Nearly 2,000 people marched at a similar demonstration in the northern city of Newcastle on Saturday. Two men were arrested overnight for throwing firebombs at an Islamic cultural center in Grimsby, in northeast England. Similar attacks were recorded last week. As anti-racist groups warned that there could be more reprisals, Cameron came under intense pressure for going on vacation. Pictures of him relaxing in Ibiza prompted newspapers to question his leadership at a time of unease. REUTERS

Seventy killed in wave of Baghdad bombings Surge. Attacks were targeted primarily in Shi’ite areas across the city. More than 70 people were killed in a wave of bombings in markets in Shi’ite neighborhoods across Baghdad yesterday in worsening sectarian violence in Iraq. No group claimed responsibility for the blasts. But Sunni Muslim Islamist insurgents and al-Qaeda’s Iraqi wing have increased attacks since the beginning of the year and often target Shi’ite districts. More than a dozen blasts tore into markets and shopping areas in districts across the Iraqi capital, including twin bombs just several hundred meters apart that killed at least 13 people in the capi-
tal’s Sadr City area, police and hospital officials said. “A driver hit another car and left, pretending to bring traffic police. Another car rushed to take him away and right after his car exploded among people who had gathered to see what was happening,” said bystander Hassan Kadhim. “People were shouting for help, and blood covered their faces.” Tensions between the Shi’ite leadership and the Sunni Muslim minority are at their worst since U.S. troops left in 2011, and the conflict in Syria is straining Iraq’s fragile communal balance. Write like an Egyptian. Chinese teen defaces 3.5K-year-old temple On the east bank of the Nile River sits an ancient Egyptian temple named Luxor. It’s home to six temples founded nearly 3,500 years ago. And now, one of the temple’s stone sculptures reads “Ding Jinhao was here.” Ding Jinhao is a teenage Chinese tourist who was visiting the temple with his parents and allegedly carved his name into a temple wall, according
to a CNN report. Another Chinese tourist took a picture of the graffiti and posted it on Weibo. According to CNN’s report, the original photo was re-posted close to 100,000 times before garnering worldwide attention. Officials apparently tried cleaning up the etching, but no water can be used on the centuries-old wall. CHRISTINA PACIOLLA

What to wear under that boring graduation gown Style. You won’t sweat the giant robe when you look good underneath it. Graduation gowns are tough to pull off. They’re not exactly flattering, what with their tablecloth-like shape and plastic-y material. Make sure you rock something sassy under that humdrum cloak, and you’ll be set for post-commencement festivities. You can go for fancy and frilly or vintage and sweet, but either way, your look will have graduated from boring to best in show. David’s Bridal has several options if you’re opting for a celebratory new dress. Jamie Bradford, the assistant manager at David’s
A retro sundress will ensure that you stay cool under all that synthetic fabric. / SAZZ VINTAGE
Bridal in Plymouth Meeting, says that dresses with pockets are a huge trend right now. “The pockets work well for carrying lip gloss, camera or [a] phone,” says Bradford. A little extra bulk in the pockets will hardly be noticeable under
all that polyester regalia. Bradford also sees sleek dresses becoming a staple of graduation season. “You don’t want something too bulky under the gown. It’ll look weird in pictures.” Opt for a streamlined silhouette instead.
Similarly, Melissa Granum, manager of Philadelphia’s Sazz Vintage, says, “Try to avoid puffy sleeves, as they will cause the gown to hang [funnily] on the shoulder.” But don’t let that stop you from going retro with your outfit.
“Sleeveless dresses, such as 1950s cotton day dresses and 1960s shift dresses, work especially well,” adds Granum. “They are easily dressed up or down and won’t be too warm under the gown.” Commencement may seem to drag on, but the day flies by. You may not have extra time afterward, so it’s better to wear something versatile. “Some of the girls are really taking it to the next level,” says Bradford. “They’re finding dresses that can transition easily for parties and dinners. Sometimes you don’t have time to change out of what you’re wearing.” Just remember, as Granum and Bradford both point out, comfort is key. If you find a dress that you can sit in all day, you’re already well on your way.
A dress with a sleek silhouette won’t be bulky under your graduation gown, and will look great for any post-graduation festivities. DAVID’S BRIDAL

Making peace with education Interview. A new book seeks to teach peace to students. David J. Smith may be the foremost proponent of peacebuilding education in community colleges. A longtime professor at Harford Community College in Maryland, he edited the first peace studies book intended specifically for junior college instructors: “Peacebuilding in Community Colleges: A Teaching Resource.

How many peacebuilding courses are taught in community colleges? In 2005, there were only four or five community colleges that had peace studies or conflict-resolution degree programs. Today, there are between 20 and 30. So it’s a slow trend, but it’s growing. Why is it important to teach peacebuilding?
often seeking the means to better understand those experiences themselves.
Nearly 50 percent of all undergrads in the U.S. are in a community college. These institutions are some of the most diverse and most immigrantfriendly in the U.S. We need to take this opportunity to address global issues related to conflict and violence. Also, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have impacted community colleges more than any other sector of higher education. Veterans have experiences that we need to learn from, and they’re
Are these skills important for job preparation? Many skills necessary for success in the workplace are conflict-resolutionbased. There’s a growing body of research indicating that people often fail at work because they don’t know how to deal with conflict, and they don’t have the skills to create a productive conversation with coworkers. Why focus on community colleges? About half of students at community colleges won’t transfer. They get two-year degrees and go right to work. That’s the core of American society: PTA leaders, cops, business leaders, nurses, accountants, etcetera.

Scarlett Johansson as Hillary Clinton? The casting call to portray Hillary Rodham Clinton in a new biopic about her life is looking pretty ferocious (and attractive). Reese Witherspoon, Scarlett Johansson, Amanda Seyfried and Jessica Chastain are among the actresses vying to play the secretary of state in “Rodham,” a new film that will focus on the early years of Clinton’s marriage and her time as a 20-something lawyer in Washington, D.C.. Roman Polanski isn’t necessarily a fan of birth control, complaining during a press conference in Cannes for his new film, “Venus in Fur,” that the Pill has had a “masculinizing” effect on women. The 79-year-old director says the Pill has “changed the place of women in our times.” He also gripes that moves toward gender equality are having a negative impact on chivalry, noting that “offering flowers to a lady” has now become “indecent.”
“They’re all wonderful actresses,” director James Ponsoldt told The Independent. “We’re very fortunate that a lot of really
great actors are interested in playing these roles. ...You don’t find people who question the quality of her intelligence or her drive,” he continued. “I want a wonderful actress who could embody that.” Not to knock Clinton’s looks (I think she is rather regal-looking) but this is probably the first time Scarlett Johansson and Hillary Clinton have been mentioned in relation to one another ... ever.

It was all fun and games with Amanda Bynes until she showed up to her court hearing in this wig. That wig is a cry for help. So what’s going on? The more apt question is: What isn’t? This Memorial Day weekend was such a busy one for the star, it’s hard to keep all of the crazy straight. She first showed up in court after being arrested for throwing a bong out of her apartment. She then spent the weekend tweeting various allegations that the NYPD
sexually assaulted her. She peppered this with tweets to Rihanna with, “Chris Brown beat you because you’re not pretty enough.” On Monday, she looped back around to her NYPD allegations, stating that she is suing them for various things, including locking her up overnight “for coming home after a facial and working out with my trainer like the good girl that I am.” She concluded by telling us to anticipate another nose job and her new career “as a singer/rapper!”

Some major ‘Development’ on Netflix Welcome back. Upon the Bluth family’s return this past weekend, cast members discuss plots and jokes so intricate that even they didn’t get them right away.
Although it’s hard to pinpoint precisely why “Arrested Development” failed to connect with many viewers during its initial three-season, 53-epi-
sode run, it seems likely that one reason was the show’s narrative density. Now that the show is finally back, creator Mitch Hurwitz spared no effort in creating 15 new episodes that are as complex and layered as their predecessors. Even though audiences can enjoy the luxury of sorting through them all at once thanks to their simultaneous release on Netflix this past weekend, the show’s cast is quick to admit that even they occasionally struggled to wrap their heads around it. Michael Cera, who rejoined the show’s fourth season as a co-star as well as a writer says, “There
was one scene that was like a five-page scene in the computer lab, and different sections of this scene would appear in different episodes. So you’d be actually having to deliver a line that made sense in multiple, different contexts that actually play against each other, and we’d have to deliver it in a way that tries to work for all three of those. And then you’d see an episode and you have different information and it means something totally different. That was really confusing.” Portia de Rossi, who plays the well-intentioned sister Lindsay, says there’s a luxury of having all of the

... and the one son who had no choice but to keep them all together Jason Bateman remains a unifying presence, despite the fact that only two of the episodes focus on his character Michael’s peccadilloes. He says the Netflix episodes allowed Hurwitz more freedom. “I hope that’s appreciated by the few
people who do love the show,” he says diplomatically. “They seem to be a group who likes things somewhat challenging. And the fact that Netflix affords [Mitch] the opportunity to have these stories go out over 15 different episodes, that are so intertwined that the same scene will repeat, from different angles, in multiple episodes, is a really unique and exciting thing to be a part of, in working with his complexity and with Netflix’s distribution platform.”
shows available at once: “We’ve got a little bit more time to tell the story.” David Cross, who plays Lindsay’s feckless husband Tobias, says that audiences will love that experience, but he warns that it may take a little getting used to. “You’re going to realize, ‘There’s a structure to this that I wasn’t aware of when I started watching.’ That’s going to make everybody triple-excited, and there’s going to be a sense of discovery to it that I think will be really exciting, and really define what TV can do.”

DAN KENNEDY The host of “The Moth” podcast tries his hand at the great American novel.
SMELLS — AND READS LIKE — ‘AMERICAN SPIRIT’ I hit a point in writing where I just wasn’t fond of dragging friends into it for the sake of a laugh. At a certain point you’re having a nice weekend with someone and something weird happens and you can see them thinking: “Don’t tell me Shakespeare here is gonna throw me into his next little essay.”
Dan Kennedy is known to legions of fans of “The Moth” as host of their weekly podcast, a medium where truth is held in high regard and fictionalizing is frowned upon. But after a 2008 memoir (“Rock On: An Office Power Ballad”) Kennedy is making his first foray into fiction. “American Spirit” follows the 40-something Matthew as his life slowly unravels. Kennedy says he could maybe relate to the character — but just maybe. Why is the mid-life crisis so fascinating? I suppose because it really doesn’t matter who you are or what you do, when it occurs to you that you may, in the best-case scenario, be at the halfway done with your life, it tends to grab your attention. I guess we never know what the halfway point is. History is full of people who didn’t realize they were middle aged at 14, you know? Have I

started the interview on a positive note? How was switching from nonfiction and essays to developing a novel?
Is 40-something Matthew based on anyone? He’s a guy who can’t figure out what to do when his job is gone, his marriage is doomed, the money’s running out fast, he’s drinking in suburban grocery store parking lots, eating hallucinogens and then burning frequent flier miles flying around the world making a bigger mess of things for himself. ... I’ve, uh, never known anyone like him.

Perhaps this wasn’t the intention of the filmmakers, but “The English Teacher makes a strong case for not spending all of your time reading and thinking life should be as dramatic as a good book. After all, that’s what’s Julianne Moore’s titular character does here. Moore is all prim and pedantic as Linda, a studious spinster who teaches English at a small-town high school. She’s spent most of her life reading the classics instead of experiencing the world around her. One of her former students, a failed, ulcerstricken playwright (Michael Angarano), returns to town and gives her his play to read. She believes that the piece — a tear-jerking downer called “The Chrysa-

dents, just so he won’t give up on writing to appease his father (Greg Kinnear). As inspirational as it sounds, “Teacher is basically in it for laughs. Directed by TV’s Craig Zisk (“Weeds, “Parks and Recreation), the movie plays more like a farcical version of “Notes on a Scandal, especially once Moore and Angarano’s characters briefly get it on — on top of Moore’s desk, no less. This sets off a chain of events in which secrets are revealed, lies are told and our poor,
well-read protagonist has to redeem herself. “Teacher is one of those indies that’s supposedly hiding a cynical streak under its sunny surroundings. Most of the broadly written adults deceive one another to get what they want. Needless to say, they come off more juvenile than the teenagers they’re supposed to educate. And yet, it’s ultimately much too safe and sweet to pull out any truly uncomfortable stops. Even Linda’s fate turns out more implausibly pleasant than you’d expect — especially considering how teachers are dismissed these days just by posting sexy photos of themselves on Facebook. As much as “The English Teacher tells you to get your head out of the books and face reality, the movie is as flimsy, lightweight and improbable as the average pulp paperback — and even more flexible.

ENTERTAINMENT “So You Think You Can Dance (Tuesdays at 8 p.m. on Fox) may be in its 10th season, but judge Mary Murphy is having no less fun in her job. The bubbly ballroom pro spoke with us about Season 10 while en route to the airport for a TV appearance, her chatter infused with a hint of Southern twang and that signature gregarious laughter of hers.
MARY MURPHY “So You Think You Can top this summer show? Ask the judge.
DANCING QUEEN
The show is almost 10 years old — how does that make you feel? It went by in a snap. I’m very grateful and really proud of the show and all the dancers that come back. I would say a good half of [this year’s contestants] are probably 18. They’ve just been waiting for the day [they can audition]. So many of them say, “I started when
I was 9, dreaming about the day I’d be on ‘So You Think You Can Dance.’ It’s starting to be like a rite of passage. Do you stay in touch with any former contestants? We certainly do. One of our guest judges this year is gonna be tWitch, who was one of our past contestants, and he’s engaged to Allison Holker, another one of our contestants. I think they’re our first wedding, even though they weren’t on the same year — they met each other and did a lot of gigs together and fell in love. It’s just the coolest thing. I think one of our executive producers is even gonna be marrying them!
As far as any new format twists, they haven’t let us know of anything. I do know that they do plan on keeping the two winners this season and that was new last year. We have more new guest judges, which is always fun. Minnie Driver is a new judge this season — she studied dance at the Royal Ballet in England. ... A lot of these people have dance in their background and they love, love, love the show.
How do you keep the show fresh and exciting after nine seasons?
O the set, what’s your relationship like with fellow judge Nigel Lythgoe? Me and Nigel met Prince Charles this year at Buckingham Palace. It was really surreal for me. Nigel’s a hard person to get something for, and I know he’s really involved with England still — their
And for the very first time I even [used] a cuss word — and I very rarely cuss. I take that out of my vocabulary, mainly because you’re on live TV and you never want to let
anything slip — it doesn’t go down well with the network. And I don’t like it. [But] there was a spectacular kid this season and something came flying out of my mouth.
Leaving the station
Are you sending any contestants on the hot tamale train this season? Oh, for sure. I put a couple contestants on that train during the auditions, which is rare.

Bret Michaels revs up for debut of RV show Open road. The rockin’ reality star wants to pimp your ride.
After decades in the spotlight as a glam metal frontman, 50-year-old rocker reality star Bret Michaels is throwing a new skill into the mix: tricking out RVs and rocking the open road. For Michaels, RVing is much more than a means of transportation — it’s a lifestyle. The rock star holds tight to countless childhood memories in an RV and now spends nine months out of the year on the road, logging millions of miles. Sunday night, the self-proclaimed “ultimate RV adventurer” debuted a new show on the Travel Channel, “Rock my RV with Bret Michaels.” In the 16-episode series, the “Rock of Love” star leads a design team as they transform worn-out, dilapidated RVs into the most luxurious, over-the-

top, tricked-out mobile mansions on the road. To get America revved up, the hands-on aficionado has five things he wants you to know about hitting the road in an RV.
They’re not just the chariot of choice for retirees
Anyone at any age can rock an RV road trip. “I hope that [the show] shows that the open road is for any generation. My mom and dad were pretty young when they were doing it. It’s sort of like the Wild West. You go out there, and it’s a great adventure.”
Be mindful of the cramped quarters “When you take a road trip, whether you’re in a car or an RV, let me just assure you, you’re either going to bond for life and have great memories, or you may possibly never speak to each other again. This is my best advice: You want as much space as you can get. Stop at a place where you can get out of that thing and get away from each other for a little bit. Go out, walk around, hike, stretch out, enjoy the scenery.”
Bigger is not better “If you’re going to start RVing, you might want to start with a smaller one and get a good feel of the groove of the road as you’re going. It’s just like starting out on anything. If you’re going to ride a Harley, you don’t want to jump on the biggest, heaviest one right away. You graduate up a little bit.”
MORGAN ROUSSEAU
morgan.rousseau@metro.us
Every RV has its thorn
He takes tricking out your RV seriously “The first thing I have to do with most of these is look at the structure, the rust factor, what we can and can’t do — and most important is weight. You can’t put too much weight on this thing. It could be quite dangerous. So it’s really a matter of function and fun. I’ve got to create both. I want it to be fun, but it’s got to function, and I want their experience when they leave to be enjoyable. A lot of these RV shows, they build these in a garage, and they make things that could never possibly go down the road. My job is to make it be able to go wherever they want it — go under any bridge, go anywhere they want, any beach, any side of a mountain that they want to go.”

PARENTING

School’s out for summer? Uh-oh Summer vacation. The summer months can be challenging for any parent. Now just imagine if you had twins.
Jane Roper, the author of the memoir “Double Time: How I Survived — and Mostly Thrived — Through the First Three Years of Mothering Twins,” knows how rewarding and challenging the summer months with children can be. And now that her daughters are 6 years old, she has spent many a warm month keeping both of them occupied. “If you’ve got preschool or school-aged kids like I do, you may be dreading the end of the school year just a teensy bit,” she notes. “But fear not: There are plenty of ways to retain your sanity
Advice
Let them be bored “Resist the urge to schedule every last minute,” advises Roper. “When my kids complain that they’re bored, I say, ‘Well, it’s OK to be bored.’ Roper says that then, her girls “usu-

Be a tourist
Almost every public library has some kind of summer reading program — even for the picture-book set. Check out what’s available near you, and designate some independent reading time every day. While the kids read, you can dive into
Summer is a great time to explore your own backyard — the parks, museums and attractions you don’t normally get to. Schedule a weekly “field trip” to someplace within an hour’s ride or drive that you and/or your kids have never been before.

Doctors should regularly screen babies and young children for delays in motor skill development — including trouble sitting, standing and speaking — at well-child visits, pediatricians said Monday. In a clinical report, an American Academy of Pediatrics panel said that diagnosing and treating those problems early on may ultimately improve kids’ outlook and help families gain additional support. “Identifying children with delays and motor abnormalities, theoretically or hopefully would set them on a better trajectory, said Meghann Lloyd, who studies motor development at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology in Oshawa, Canada. Lloyd, who was not involved in the new report, called it “a really big step
forward for the field. Dr. Garey Noritz and colleagues on the AAP’s neuromotor screening expert panel lay out the skills that a child should have developed by office visits at ages 9, 18, 30 and 48 months. For example, a 9-monthold baby should be able to roll to both sides, sit well without support and grasp objects. At 18 months, that child should be able to walk, sit and stand on its own. Pediatricians should also ask parents open-ended questions about their Milestones

child’s development and watch the child play for signs of delays or loss of motor skills at well-child visits, the panel said. On a general exam, it recommended that doctors measure head size and look at children’s muscle tone, reflexes and eye movements. Cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy are two of the most common motorrelated diseases and could both be picked up and treated earlier than they typically are now, according to Noritz. “We’re hoping that people can get to a specialist more quickly and thus get diagnosed more quickly, but that primary care clinicians at the same time as they’re looking for a diagnosis, will refer [kids] to therapy, he said. REUTERS
Motor skills Parents can bring their children to an early movement program such as Kindergym to promote development of motor skills, Lloyd said, regardless of other treatments and whether or not they are delayed. Having poor motor skills in general “sets you on
a trajectory for low levels of physical activity, which of course is related to obesity, she said. “The prevention of these delays or the promotion of motor ability can actually impact your health for your lifespan.

HAVE YOU HAD YOUR ANNUAL EXAM?
STEVE SCHIRRIPA The “Sopranos” actor talks about his book “Big Daddy Rules.”
TOUGH LOVE think I made a mistake there. I don’t think she was emotionally ready. I was reluctant. I would not make that mistake again.
On “The Sopranos,” Steve Schirripa played a hotheaded, loud-mouthed guy. As a father, he’s pretty much that same guy. He wrote “Big Daddy Rules” as a love letter to his two daughters. “I guess I don’t always tell them how I feel,” he says. “I yell a lot. I’m pretty strict, and also I’ve got a lot of opinions, and I wanted to put them all together in a book.” What are the rules? The first rule is, I make the rules. I’m your father, not your friend. But I’m the best friend you’re ever going to have because nobody is going to care about you the way I care about you. The four greatest words in the world are “because I said so.” That’s why you can’t go to the party where they’re serving beer. Parents don’t want to tell their kids “no” anymore. What’s the hardest part about raising girls? A boy, you give them a ball, you give them a Lego, they’re fascinated. Girls are smart, they’re cunning, they’re calculating. They bat their eyelashes, they manipulate you.
Do you really think you could have stopped her? I hear what you’re saying. I can’t control everything they do, and I don’t try to, but I want to be present whether I’m there or not. I want them to think, “What would my dad think about this decision I’m about to make?” Quoted
“The first rule is, I make the rules.” Schirripa
Did you care whether you had a boy or a girl? It didn’t matter to me, as long as they were healthy. It was scary though, when my wife got pregnant. I was not prepared. I was a guy that went out a lot, I worked nights, I was living in Las Vegas. I thought my world would come to a stop. What’s an uncomfortable situation, as a dad? My daughter dated a boy when she was 16, and I
Were you strict with letting them watch TV? I am still! I hate that reality crap. I saw them one day watching “The Jersey Shore” and I said I never want to see that again, ever. It’s complete garbage. You think this is for real? What’s your best advice for a new dad? I think the best thing is to be present. Get in there, get your hands dirty. Be involved. You know, in every movie, every TV show, the dad’s an idiot. Don’t be an idiot. Take charge, change a diaper, help.

Good sleep duration and quality are very important for your child’s health. / THINKSTOCK
A new study based on pairs of Canadian twins suggests that genetics play a strong role in how long kids sleep at night, but their environment may be more important for afternoon naps. Researchers compared sleep patterns for close to 500 sets of identical or fraternal twins. They found that especially as kids got older, environmental influences — which include when parents put kids in bed, for example — explained more and more of their napping differences. “Even though the results do not explicitly state which are the environmental factors,” says Sonia Brescianini, “researchers in the field think that familial habits at bed time, sleeping routines and in general sleep hygiene measures are for sure a means of improving sleep in children.” Brescianini, a researcher with the Italian Twin Register at Rome’s Istituto
Superiore di Sanita, told Reuters that past research has also suggested a child’s environment may be more important than genetics for daytime sleep habits. By comparing sets of identical and fraternal twins, Dr. Jacques Montplaisir was able to determine how much of kids’ sleep variation was due to genes — which are the same in identical twins — and how much to environmental factors. But genes never explained more than about one-third of daytime nap length, the researchers reported. Family routines and other shared environmental influences, on the other hand, accounted for between 33 and 79 percent of whether or not twins were napping during the day, and for how long. That association became stronger as children got older and average nap length shortened. REUTERS
Quoted
“Good sleep duration and quality is very important for children’s physical and mental health, because sleeping behavior has been associated with obesity, poor school performance and other behavioral disorders.” Brescianini

ODesk, the world’s largest online workplace, predicts that by 2020, one in three workers will be hired online — allowing him to work wherever and whenever he wants. He’s been impressive all year long. I’ve seen some of

We’ll get a chance to see him in person.” Girardi admitted he has dual purposes for watching Harvey’s starts. “The first time I watched [him] was because I [am] a fan of the game and have interest in New York baseball since I live here,” Girardi said. “Now I watch games because I [knew] we were playing them fairly quickly.” DENIS GORMAN

NHL. The Rangers have the offseason to debate whether to amnesty the veteran center. Brad Richards was the primary target for the Rangers in free agency two years ago. The center may be targeted by the organization this summer for an altogether different reason. “I signed for longer than a year and a half,” Richards said when he met with reporters at the Rangers’ training facility yesterday for the final time in the 2013 season. “But I do understand what’s going on.” Richards could be a candidate for an amnesty buyout this summer due to his play in the truncated 2013 season, the remaining term on his contract and the new collective bargaining agreement’s salary cap benefit recapture system. The 33-year-old was a healthy scratch for Games
4 and 5 of the Eastern Conference semifinals against the Bruins. He finished the playoffs with one goal and a minus-3 rating in 10 playoff games, and had been dropped to a fourth line with Chris Kreider and Arron Asham midway through the Washington series. “As I said when I took him out of the lineup, I was not coaching the proper way, playing him on the fourth line,” head coach John Tortorella said. “It just doesn’t work. But I also could not put him in front of other people because [at the time] other people were playing better.” The Rangers have $13.5 million in available cap room right now, but by amnestying Richards, the Rangers would have $20.1 million in cap room. “I signed here to be a Ranger for a lot longer than a year and a half,” Richards said. “So I hope to do that.”

The team has restricted free agents Ryan McDonagh, Derek Stepan, Mats Zuccarello and Carl Hagelin to re-sign this offseason.

thing to do is to correct this thing, admit you made a mistake, that it is wrong to make a scapegoat for an institutional problem and bring back Tim Pernetti and move on from there.” Pernetti would not speak on the record, but a high-ranking source said the university was onboard with Pernetti’s decision last December. “Everyone was onboard with the suspension, including the Committee for Athletics, which included several members of the Board of Governors, and the president of the university to the point that Pernetti was effusively praised in December board meetings for his handling of the situation by all parties,” the source said.
