An elaborate rock-climbing gym set to open this summer will offer Bostonians a bolder bouldering experience.

“Climbing to us is very inspirational. We hope it enlightens people and breaks down parameters they set for themselves,” said Lance Pinn, cofounder of Brooklyn Boulders Somerville.

Co-founder Jesse Levin, whose motto is “physicality stimulates innovation and creativity,” describes the gym as a unique platform to fuse eclectic interests.

“At its core, it’s a rock-climbing facility, and climbing really fosters a sense of community.

Bulger case. Prosecutors want families of alleged victims to testify at trial

Federal prosecutors are pushing back against the lawyers for alleged fugitive mob boss James “Whitey” Bulger who don’t want the family members of the alleged victims to testify at trial.

In a three-page memorandum filed yesterday, prosecutors said they will call the family members of the alleged 19 murder victims to testify. Bulger’s lawyers earlier filed a motion to bar any “prejudicial testimony.”

“This Court should not, on the basis of a vague oneand-a-half page motion from the defendant, preemptively bar the government from legitimate areas of inquiry because the family members of James Bulger’s 19 murder victims are grief-stricken,” prosecutors wrote in their memo.

The 83-year-old’s trial starts next week. Jury selection is scheduled for June 6.

compromised U.S. designs included those for combat aircraft and ships, as well as missile defenses.

So when it came time to throw a football through a hanging tire at the Touchdown Fever arcade game on the boardwalk in Point Pleasant, N.J., it was Christie who had a successful toss, an ungainly spiral that went through the tire, after Obama had tried and missed five times with his left-handed throw.

The two leaders, Obama tall and lanky and Christie mid-height and round, gave each other a celebratory high-five, and then Obama referenced Christie’s re-election campaign. “That’s because he’s running for office,� Obama declared to throngs of tourists, who recorded it all on their smartphones as a light rain fell. Obama received the prize for Christie’s performance — a stuffed bear. Then they worked the rope line.

‘On The Town’ may leave audiences on the fence Review. The latest from the Lyric Stage Company is fun, but undeniably dated.

The Lyric Stage’s Company’s annual spring musical, this year “On The Town,� is an old-fashioned, 1940s-era musical filled with singing, dancing and a lot of corny shtick about “damechasing� guys and the gals who love them.

Though intermittently sweet and enjoyable, the production at times also feels a bit tired and dated. Part of the problem, perhaps, is that material that might have read as slightly suggestive and racy in the time the play is set now feels off-color for all the wrong reasons.

It is a flaw that cannot be helped. Today’s audiences are far savvier than those who filled the play’s seats seven decades ago. The glut of dance shows on television has raised the bar for choreographic expectations and, while Ilyse Robbins’ original choreography certainly measures up, its execution frequently falls short. If you’re watching from the back of the house, even the straight lines are all over the place.

Drew Moerlein was just a nice boy from New Hampshire before he was cast as twisted, sadomasochistic playboy Christian Grey in “Spank! The Fifty Shades Parody.” Part musical, part comedy, part “interpretive dance,” the Canadian-based production (an unauthorized parody) was such a hit on its first run in Boston this past January that they’re reprising it this weekend. Didn’t read the book and worried you won’t get the show? You needn’t be. Like all things we love to hate, just being aware that E.L. James’ ridiculously prurient “Fifty Shades of Grey” series exists is enough for most people to know everything they need to. It doesn’t hurt (unless you want it to, that is) to be prepared, however, so we got Moerlein to fill in the, er, um, gray areas.

We play to everyone. We’re about to play Nashville, which is a bit more of a conservative town, you know? We’re not about to stick vibrating vaginal balls up somebody’s crevice and then not have an audience for the next two nights. We try and find a happy medium between shock and awe and light, hilarious innuendo.

So, did you read the books?

For “research.” And no, I did not read it thinking it was a literary masterpiece, but it made this woman a billionaire.

She did something right.

Did you get a “woodrow”?

Oh, I got a “woodrow,” if I’m assuming what a “woodrow” is! I was pretty much standing at “woodrow mast” the whole book. No. I don’t think that men have the same reaction to the book as women do. Every single day I hear “this changed my sex life” — from women and from men. Men are like, “Yo, I can’t hate on that book.

The week my wife was reading that book was pretty much the best sex we’ve had in 10 years.”

Was being into S&M, joining sex clubs or having a dungeon in your basement part of the job description for getting this role?

Yes, I had to show them the slaves tied up in my basement in order to get this part. No. [Laughs] I had to do a lot of research. The cookies on my computer were pretty interesting for the first couple months of this process. As an actor you obviously need to be able to tap into those weird, dark, kinky places, but that does not have to be a part of your outside life.

Ouch. Being a sadomasochistic playboy is this nice guy’s day job.

Let’s say you had a nice, little, old set manager. What is he going to see that is going to shock him?

He might open up a box that contains a very phallic rubbery object that is attached to an everyday household sports item with florescent hair attached to it. That’s one.

I’m sure your family and friends are used to the occupational hazards of your job. But did it present any memorable interactions?

I’ve got very old fashioned, lovely and amazing grandparents from Alaska. They flew down to Florida and came to see us in Jacksonville. I was totally fine with it. I was prepared and ready for what was about to happen. I was doing the show and I forgot that they were there. I was waiting to go on before I disrobe, if you will, down to a very tiny man piece, and I realize I’m about to be shaking my man-jewels in my grandma’s and grandpa’s [faces]. We’re in a small venue.

There’s no question that when I thrust my manhood toward the audience that that’s what’s going to be happen, my junk to their face. That was a bit intense, and I was a bit tentative when I turned around for that.

I understand that your main prop is a neck tie?

Yes, there’s a LOT of “tie work” in this show. She gets bound and gagged with a tie more times than I care to remember.

Do you ever stay in character when you go out?

Well, I don’t think my lady friend would be too keen on that. I will say this: The opportunities present themselves on a nightly basis. It is as though these women are in a fantasyland. It is like they are at a strip club with their friends, wasted off their faces. I have 60-yearold women molesting me after the show.

‘IV Play’ a rude awakening of a different variety for The-Dream R&B. Hip-hop’s premier songwriter goes from racy to ratchet with his new album.

The-Dream has always been a sex-obsessed R&B genius, but now he’s turned things up a notch. On his new album, “IV Play,� which drops this week, the singer, songwriter and producer isn’t afraid to express his desires. He says the extra dose of risque talk and bawdy calls for sex are a reflection of where he’s at in his life, and where we’re at as a society. For the uninitiated, this is ratchet-infused R&B. “I’d like to think it’s a very vibe-y, adult album,� says the man born Terius Nash. “I’ve been out, I’ve been in clubs so I know we’re in the ratchet era of things. I’m sure there’s been a lot of ratchetness on my album because of what’s been going through our culture, which is a good thing, by the way. The ‘ratchet’ word sounds like it’s negative, but it’s actually more free than most R&B songs could be, than pop could be. ‘I don’t give a f—’ — that’s basically what it’s saying.�

In “21 Jump Street,� he played an entitled high school drug dealer. In “Warm Bodies� he was the bitter boyfriend of a girl in love with a zombie. “I promise this is not a representation of me,� Franco says. “At first it was really fun and liberating playing something outside of myself, to be mean.

But after a while, not only have I exhausted this kind of role, but people start thinking this is how I really I am.�

In “Now You See Me� he gets to play a mostly nice guy, albeit a sleight-of-hand artist first seen stealing from a tourist. “Louis Leterrier is a very visual director, and a lot of the scenes have multiple cameras flying about, circling around you,� Franco says. “Most of the time you have no idea whether or not the camera is catching you.�

Though the film’s cast is filled with big names, it’s hard to be starstruck when your brother is

On the pill? The other pill to take Health. A drop in nutrients is at the heart of “The Pill Problem,� Ross Pelton says.

Ross Pelton, R.Ph., C.C.N., says that his career has bridged two worlds: that of a registered pharmacist dealing with medications, and that of a certified clinical nutritionist concerned with natural healing. This duality has led him to discover what he calls drug-induced nutrient depletion. This side effect of medications can’t be measured in nausea, vomiting, headaches or whatever

Rather, drug-induced nutrient depletion happens slowly, over time, as a medication either inhibits absorption or production — or leaches — nutrients from the body. Among the many common drugs that produce this are oral contraceptives, which prompted Pelton to write his new book, “The Pill Problem.� “As a class of drugs, oral contraceptives have an enormous effect on nutrients,� says Pelton. “They deplete all B-vitamins, magnesium, selenium, zinc, tyrosine and coenzyme Q10. The only other medication that comes close to its effect on nutrients is steroids.�

According to Pelton’s book,

without these nutrients, ailments such as depression, sexual malaise, lack of energy and insomnia can develop. To avoid this, Pelton recommends nutritional supplements to counteract the depletion. “Even with a healthy diet, you can’t get the therapeutic levels needed,� he says. “I’m concerned with optimal health and the prevention of illness. Women who take oral contraceptives should take a high-potency multivitamin and multimineral supplement to provide adequate levels to prevent problems.�

Several smartphones now come with built-in software to optimize battery life. For those that don’t, Qualcomm released Snapdragon BatteryGuru, an Android application that monitors what’s going on behind the scenes on your phone, and adjusts your phone’s settings to maximize battery life.

The game is your average Nintendo sidescroller, meaning it is brilliant. You control the infamous gorilla and his adorable sidekick, Diddy Kong, as they stomp on enemies, avoid obstacles and collect lots of trinkets.

“Donkey Kong” went from a home console to a portable, so it’s only natural we also look at an example of the reverse. “Resident Evil: Revelations” was released to critical acclaim last year for Nintendo’s 3DS. It was lauded

for bringing actual scares back to the “Resident Evil” franchise. Now it’s back, on every major home console, to terrify your living rooms.

The game still offers up what you loved about early entries in the franchise.

Ammo is scarce, corridors are tight and ooze monster zombie thingies lurk around every corner. The graphics do look a bit dated. Vistas that looked gorgeous on the 3DS look a bit off when blown up. Even with that, it’s still an essential title for survival horror fans.

New kids on the block: Newbury gains two cool salons Depending on who you talk to, Newbury Street is either an overcrowded tourist trap of generic commercialization, or a bastion of style. If you ask us, the truth is somewhere in between. On a sunny day, strolling the stretch of boutiques, restaurants and salons beats a trip to the mall hands down.

Two new additions to the latter group have recently upped the ante.

Walk into most salons on a Saturday morning, and you’re aurally assaulted with hangover-aggravating club beats. The recent collapse of a bridge in Washington is just another sign of more such disasters to come, and most of the blame falls on the lap of Congress members. Bruins in an unfamiliar underdog role vs. Pens NHL playoffs. What are the keys to victory for the Bruins as the anticipation for the Eastern Conference Finals builds?

With home ice on their side and an All-Star lineup, the Penguins are the undisputed favorite to win the 2013 Eastern Conference Finals vs. the Bruins. Still, Boston will not be an easy out by any means. If they’re solid in a few key areas, they could certainly pull off the upset and beat Pittsburgh to reach the Stanley Cup Finals for the second time in three seasons. Most expect a great series between the two best teams in the East, who will both have a week of rest before Game 1 at CONSOL Energy Center — reportedly on Saturday night — finally begins.

Slackers delight —

Tyler Seguin’s (1 goal, 3 assists, minus-2) struggles this postseason have been well documented, but his less talented linemates Chris Kelly (0 goals, 0 assists, minus-6) and Rich Peverley (1 goal, 0 assists, minus 4) have been equally as inept offensively. To beat a team that is just as deep, the Bruins will need contributions from all four lines to get past the Penguins. Boston’s fourth line was superb against the Rangers in the semifinals,

but Pittsburgh has a similar amount of talent there, and a wash is likely. That means that the third line for the B’s will need to step up since Boston’s top two lines are sure to have their hands full with Chris Kunitz, Sidney Crosby, Pascal Dupuis, James Neal, Evgeni Malkin and Jarome Iginla.

Accentuate the positives — It is often said

that the Bruins are the best five-on-five team in

the NHL, and they’ll need to play to that strength against the Penguins.

Boston simply cannot afford to take stupid penalties (think David Krejci in Game 5 vs. Rangers) against Pittsburgh. The Penguins have the best power play in the postseason (13 for 46, 28.3 percent), which is one of the main reasons why they also lead the playoffs in goal-scoring (4.27 per game).

Attainable goals — The only area that one can point to with certainty as an advantage for the Bruins is in goals. Tuukka Rask (8-4, 2.22 GAA, .928 save percentage) has been Boston’s No. 1 goaltender all season, as opposed to Tomas Vokoun (6-1, 1.85 GAA, .941 save percentage), who was supposed to be Pittsburgh’s backup goaltender but was thrust into the spotlight after Marc-Andre Fleury couldn’t get the job done against the

Islanders in the first round.

Vokoun’s numbers in a smaller sample size are better than Rask’s, but if you’ve seen Penguins games, you know that he’s been shaky and can be beaten if the Bruins get traffic in front of him and crash the net — two things they did with force against New York’s Henrik Lundqvist.

Noel is expected to be selected in the top three of this year’s NBA Draft. A trade of that magnitude would likely involve the Celtics surrendering both Rajon Rondo and Paul Pierce for draft picks and then packaging those picks to move all the way up. The Celtics were one of a handful of teams that interviewed Noel at the

recent NBA Draft combine in Chicago.

“It’s not a no-brainer,” Ainge told Blakely with regard to any blockbuster deal. “It’s not like you get a 21-year-old All-Star player or you get the No. 1 pick in the draft [if you deal Pierce].

Those decisions would not be hard, but I have a feeling the decision is going to be very hard.”

One stat quite telling in losses for Red Sox MLB. The “runners in scoring position� numbers show where Boston has failed and triumphed this season.

For the majority of the season, and even during the Red Sox’s stretch where they lost six of seven games in the first week of May it was hard to pinpoint where the team was going wrong in losses.

Their pitching was still fairly consistent, only allowing more than five runs three times in that seven-game span.

Their offense was still performing well, still at or near the top of the AL in average, onbase percentage, and runs per game. So, where was the team going wrong?

The team has now played more than 50 games this season and it has become apparent what the biggest key to their success is — the ability to perform with runners in scoring position.

With the team hitting .373 with RISP in wins, compared to just .177 in losses, the nearly .200 point difference is clearly an indication of just how important the stat is. A perfect example came in Saturday’s come-from-behind win over the Indians when they scored

Back when the team went 2-9 over an 11-game stretch things weren’t clicking and frustration was setting in. During that span the team was 4-for40 with RISP at one point.

Going into Monday, David Ortiz led the way hitting .378

with RISP, followed by Mike Carp at .375 and Daniel Nava at .362. On the other end of the spectrum is Will Middlebrooks, a lowly .143, with Jarrod Saltalamacchia not much better at .167.
