Brooklyn DA to NYPD: No more condoms as evidence In a letter to NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly, Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes warned the NYPD that his office would no longer use possession of condoms as evidence of prostitution, the New York Times reported. NYPD spokesman Paul Browne reportedly agreed
on that on behalf of the department but added, “We do not rule out their evidentiary value when going after pimps and sex traffickers. If there is a bowlful of condoms in a massage parlor, we want our officers to be able to seize them as evidence against the trafficker.” DANIELLE TCHOLAKIAN

According to NBC News, the text of the letter was identical to the letters sent to Bloomberg, including the line, “What’s in this letter is nothing compared to what I’ve got planned for you.” Last week, letters were sent to Bloomberg and his gun control advocacy organization, Mayors Against Illegal Guns. Both letters referenced the “debate on gun laws.” On Wednesday, NYPD spokesman Paul Browne revealed that anonymous City service

Election 2013. Weiner avoids circumcision controversy question Mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner was evasive at a Jewish Press mayoral forum Wednesday night when a question arose regarding a controversial circumcision method practiced by some in the Orthodox Jewish community, Politicker reported. The method, called metzitzah b’peh, involves a mohel — a person trained in the religious practice of circumcision — sucking the blood from the wound on the infant’s genitals. The city’s health department has linked the practice to neonatal cases of herpes. Of the six Democratic candidates for mayor, Erick Salgado, Bill de Blasio, and John Liu had no problem with the procedure and were opposed to the Bloomberg administration instituting a requirement that parents must sign a consent form prior to

According to New York Magazine’s Daily Intel, Anthony Weiner “pretty much dodged the question entirely.” The question arose because of two recent cases of infections: in the last three months, two more babies were infected, according to the Department of Health. Storm warning. A new report predicts rising sea levels in N.Y. will cause regular flooding. By the end of the century, melting glaciers could raise water levels on the eastern seaboard five feet higher. That means that even runof-the-mill storms will be capable of producing the kind of catastrophic flooding that superstorm Sandy

— a so-called “one-in-500year storm” — unleashed on the tri-state area last year. A new report by Mark Fischetti in Scientific American breaks down the implications of the likely rise in sea levels over the next 87 years. His prediction? Sandy-level flooding every two to three years. The destruction that followed Sandy has spurred people to action in the worst-hit areas. Power companies and governments have proposed buffer zones and unveiled plans to stormproof electrical infrastructure in the New York metropolitan area. Fischetti argues these steps won’t be enough. “Retreat from low-lying shores may be the best option,” he writes.

Gun crime. Police search for duo after daylight shooting
Lawsuit. Court papers allege DA’s office ran ‘private jail system’
The New York Police Department is searching for two men who they say shot a man inside of his apartment. According to police, on May 12 around 3:50 p.m. two men made their way inside of a residential apartment building on East 183rd Street in the Bronx. The men then fired a gun through an apartment door, striking the victim in the head. The victim was taken to the hospital where he was listed in stable condition. Police said that the suspects are Manuel Cortez, 33, 5-foot-8 and 220 pounds, and Kola Mirdita, 39, 5-foot-8 and 200 pounds. Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call Crime stoppers at 1-800577-TIPS.
Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes’ office used hotel rooms to hold witnesses against their will and force them into testifying, said shocking new court papers filed on Wednesday, May 29, by lawyer Joel Rudin. Rudin is the lawyer for Jabbar Collins, a man who spent 15 years in jail for murdering a Brooklyn rabbi until he was ordered free by a federal judge. Rudin has filed a $150 million wrongful-conviction lawsuit against Hynes’ office. Rudin cited a deposition by a former investigator in Hynes’ office

AMERICA: THE NO VACATION NATION Opinion
TOM FOREMAN POLITICAL CORRESPONDENT FOR CNN
I was sitting in my backyard last night when my dog walked up. “You look tired,” she said. “What’s the matter?” “Oh, nothing,” I replied. “Just beat. Too many hours at the office. Too many emails. You know how it is.” “Actually, no,” she said. “I’m unemployed, and I lack opposable thumbs, but I get the idea. You know what you need, my friend? A vacation.” She’s right. And I suspect I am not the only one. Yet, once again, as summer gins up, millions of us will not be joining the ranks of those bound for beaches, resorts and theme parks. Some people can’t afford the trip; others fear that layoff-hungry bosses will see them as “lazy.” And according to a study by the Center for Economic and Policy Research, about a quarter of us are allotted no vacation time by our employers. In this regard, labor rights advocates have long complained that we lag far behind virtually every other major nation where vacation time is not only taken much more readily, but required by law. In Japan, workers receive a minimum of 10 days of vacation. In Germany, it jumps to 24 days. And in France, it’s up to 30. No surprise there — I sup-

Still, the fact remains that most people living in the industrialized world take longer and more frequent breaks than do Americans. You can argue we’ve built an amazingly strong nation and economy through all of our hard work, despite recent setbacks. But I’m beginning to wonder if, by limiting, shortchanging or just plain skipping so many vacations, we’re burning out the very “get ’er done” spirit that has led us to greatness and can help us recover now; we’re losing our perspective and energy; we’re going a little crazy. So if you are planning to skip your vacation … don’t. Take the time. Recharge. That’s my plan, and I think it’s overdue. After all, I’m talking to dogs.

Mystery solved?
Aircraft recovery group possibly locates Amelia Earhart’s plane Researchers have been trying to track Amelia Earhart’s plane after it mysteriously disappeared in 1937. More than 10 years ago, The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery (TIGHAR) isolated the Pacific island of Nikumaroro as the location where her plane likely went down. Now, the organization says that underwater sonar images taken during a 2012 island visit support the

location theory. TIGHAR believes Earhart and her navigator, Fred Noonan, put down on the coral flats at the western end of the island. Since discovering the location in 2000, other
clues have been found, including shards of plexiglass from a windscreen and aluminum from an aircraft body. Theories also suggest that Earhart and Noonan survived on the island for some time before dying of injury or infection. The grainy photo reveals there is something approximately 600 feet below the surface. TIGHAR is calling it an “anomaly.” “The most prominent part of the anomaly appears to be less than 32 feet long,” TIGHAR’s website says. Earhart’s plane was reportedly 38 feet 7 inches long. star/creator Lena Dunham is, well, average-looking. She’s a chubby, tattooed, thin-haired 26-year-old. She’s normal. The hype comes at the perfect time for the “real beauty” movement — and for this Metro Sex Issue, themed “Feel Good Naked.” Within the past month, plus-size model Jennie Runk made headlines when H+M debuted her modeling swimwear (despite being a dress size 14-16, not 0). Dove soap, on the tails of an ad campaign featuring plus-size women, launched an “anti-Photoshop” app that restores images to their original form. And “amateur” porn is the most popular category on YouPorn, ranking higher than “blondes.” The house that Jenna Jameson built is crumbling. The question is: How quickly?
The biggest sex story of the past year didn’t happen between Christian and Anastasia in some porn your mom read — it happened in Brooklyn when Adam banged Hannah and probably gave her an STD. The HBO series “Girls,” with its frank depiction of bad dirty talk, venereal diseases, abortions, miscarriages and condom spill, is all about sex. But unlike “Sex and the City” before it, this show is a global hit partly because

In one year, or in five? “I don’t think five years is enough,” says Gabi Gregg, 26, a plus-size blogger. Her work went viral last year after she posted photos of herself looking sensual in a “fatkini” and, this week, she launches her own line of swimwear (see story, at right). “But peo-
ple like Lena Dunham and Louis C.K. are opening doors. Just the fact that her body makes people so angry — if you read the comments, people are telling her to put on clothes. She has said that only makes her want to do it more. It’s my favorite show.” Arielle Loren doesn’t watch “Girls,” but also traffics in blunt depictions of sex. Her magazine Corset (www.corsetmagazine. com) features graphic nudity and first-person erotica, and resembles someone’s beautifully photographed diary. It became profitable after a year, and Loren sees it as part of a movement. “The way we learn about sex, the pornography industry drives a lot of that consciousness,” says Loren, a 27-year-old American. “It starts to inform the way we think about ‘sexy’ from

That goes from everything you can do in the bedroom — physically — but also how we understand our bodies.” A recent Corset photoshoot, “Breasts in Erotic Daylight,” features a brown bosom with stretch marks. “We definitely don’t airbrush,” says Loren. “There’s something very sexy about that. Being able
to see the hair follicles on a breast or the stretch marks on a woman’s stomach.” She now has subscribers here, in Canada, Peru, Brazil, Sweden and beyond. And yet post a photo of a plus size-model online and you see not everyone’s as accepting. Exhibit A: Jennie Runk.
Junk in Runk’s trunk The excitement (and de-
bate) over Runk’s H+M campaign made it all the way to Italy, where she was working in May. It led to at least one sleepless night. “I was thinking about all the media I’ve been getting and my mom reads a lot of the comments and she said, ‘I can’t believe somebody called you fat,’” remembers the 24-year-old, “and some people on the other side were like, ‘The curvier bodies are better!’ and it’s so ridiculous that people are having these ar-

In school, did you realize you were bigger than everybody else? Yes and no. I wasn’t teased too much, luckily. What if some girl looks at these pictures and looks exactly like me: How is she going to feel?” She turned to Facebook with a post. “I’ve noticed that people like to debate what kind of body is better than another,” she wrote. “This is all wrong! How to feel good naked AVOID:
Health. The author of “WomanCode” turns your body into a “power source”with these sexy tips. Bloating. Zits. Decreased sex drive. If you’re a woman, and you’re aging up, we may have just described your average Tuesday night. Alisa Vitti, a hormonal health expert and the author of “WomanCode,” a book about “supercharging your sex drive,” says it doesn’t have to be that way. “What’s normal is a sex drive that increases as you age,” she says. “You need to train the body to maximize the kinds of foods that provide us with micronutrients that help us produce optimal levels of hormones, metabolize them and get them out of the body.” It all starts with your diet.
SOY: More specifically, soy protein isolate. It’s packed full of estrogen, which risks to exacerbate hormonal symptoms. However, small quantities of fermented soy, such as miso paste, tofu and tempeh, are OK. COW’S MILK: It contains casein, a protein that can make it difficult for nutrients to get to the target glands of the endocrine system (a collection of glands that secrete hormones). This can make it difficult for proper hormonal function and elimination and worsen symptoms such as acne. Concerned about calcium? Bok Choy and sesame seeds are good alternatives to dairy. WHEAT: Actually, it’s the

What’s hot? Nerds. What’s not? Blondes? Report. In the porn world, the blonde bombshell is losing out to “more natural” types. “But I don’t think one is more acceptable than the other,” says one star. At one point in her life, the woman we now know as Ela Darling was a librarian. But the 9 to 5 routine bored her. So she began posing in bondage shoots. Then she posed in nude bondage photography. Soon after, Ela was starring in lesbian and BSDM videos and hosting own website (www. darlingela.com), which she calls “pretty porn for smart people.”
“I decided that if you put the nude and bondage together, you basically had porn,” Ela tells us. “So, I decided to give it a shot — and I really, really liked it.” The skinny, 5-foot-8 B-cup library nerd had become a porn star.

The girl next door These days, your porn performer isn’t always a hot blonde in a cheerleader outfit. Instead, she may resemble the actual girl next door. The most popular videos on YouPorn fall into the amateur category, and — whether it’s filled with actual amateurs or not — there you’ll find small breasts, stretch marks, acne, lanky bodies, big noses and other all-natural qualities.
Girls are made up to look like “someone you would see in Starbucks.”
ular now,” veteran porn star Jesse Jane, now in her 11th year doing films, told Metro World News. She says the Internet has led to the rise in “amateur” acts. People can enter the industry by posting on the Web instead of having to vie for the few contracts with an adult entertainment company. “Before, you would know who the top porn girls were,” Jesse says. “Now, you wouldn’t be able to name a handful of the girls who are in the industry. Before, they made the focus on a star and built the companies around a girl, making that girl the fantasy.”

breasts, she’s exactly what you picture when you hear the words “porn star.” She has noticed that recent girls she’s worked with have been selected to look like “someone you would see in Starbucks.” Ela believes the reason why we’re seeing so many regular-looking people is because of a movement to embrace who we are. For Ela — the girl-next-door with a fairy-like quality — that means that sometimes she’s dressed up as a zombie. Sometimes she’s peddling sweaty, smelly shoes to foot fetishists. Sometimes she’s starring in BDSM videos, experimenting with machines and trying out being hog-tied and tortured. “What I didn’t even realize shooting porn is how much I began to evolve in my comfort with sex and with my own body,” she

Given that allinclusive feeling she, for one, may dislike our photo above, pitting two women against one another. “There’s lots of different ‘persons’ [in porn)] but I don’t think one is more acceptable than the other. People pursue porn in a way that’s comfortable to them.” Jane, for one, isn’t worried about a face-off either. “The blonde girl for some reason, I don’t think that market will ever go away with the porn girls with big fake boobs,” she says between a giggle. “I think that will always be there.”

Parental guidance suggested Will and Jaden Smith teaming up for “After Earth” has us thinking of other real-life parent-child movies. MATT PRIGGE

Will and Jaden Smith The film: ‘After Earth’ (2013) Their ages: 44 and 14 Their roles: Will is a space general who tries to survive on a dangerous postapocalyptic Earth alongside his son, played by Jaden. The result: Jaden is the luckiest kid in the world, whose father bought him “The Karate Kid.” But their films together aren’t pretty: “The Pursuit of Happyness,” made when Jaden was 8, found them pursuing the American dream while spending nights on the street or in dodgy shelters.
CULTURE Old-school parenting
Joe and Buster Keaton THE FILM: ‘Sherlock, Jr.’ (1924) THEIR AGES: 58 and 29 THEIR ROLES: Buster is a lowly movie projectionist who one day wills himself into the detective film he’s screening. Joe plays the father of “The Girl.” THE RESULT: Joe and his wife Myra were vaudeville legends who started using Buster in their act when he was only a few years old. Buster’s shtick involved being thrown about the stage. Buster later repaid the favor by giving his father, by then a full-on alkie, bit parts in his some of his masterpieces.

Charlie and Martin Sheen ‘Wall Street’ (1987)
47, 22 Sylvester and Sage Stallone ‘Rocky V’ (1990)
Jon Voight and Angelina Jolie ‘Lara Croft: Tomb Raider’ (2001)
Their roles
Melvin plays an entertainer at a brothel falsely accused by “The Man.” Mario plays his younger self in a fairly graphic introductory scene where he loses his virginity to a prostitute. Thanks, dad!
Even though what was shot very nearly qualifies as child pornography, it apparently wasn’t traumatic. Mario grew up idolizing and often working with his father. He became a filmmaker himself, making “New Jack City” and “Baadasssss!” — an account of the making of his father’s pioneering black cinema classic. Mario even stars as his wildly charismatic, cigar-chomping, ladykiller pop.
Ryan is a charismatic con man in the Depression-era South who collects fraudulent fees from rubes for bibles. Tatum plays a little girl who may be his daughter. She proves a grifting prodigy.
Ryan, often a wooden rent-a-hunk, was atypically alive and hilarious in this Peter Bogdanovich comedy. Ditto, for that matter, Tatum, who became the youngest-ever Oscar winner. She did “The Bad News Bears” but struggled through an adult career. Ryan, meanwhile, did two more films of major note (“Barry Lyndon” and “The Driver”), but soon returned to crap films. Their relationship became strained. Tatum alleged that Ryan hit on her at Farah Fawcett’s funeral.
Henry is a crotchety, terminally sweary old-timer who is estranged from his daughter, played by Jane. This isn’t that far from the truth, except that Henry wasn’t married to Katharine Hepburn.
The two were famously estranged, despite him being, like her, a liberal, back when such a thing wasn’t cool. The film helped them patch things up, just as happens in the film. Henry died soon after winning his first Oscar, which Jane accepted on his behalf.
Charlie is an upstart who gets associated with the wrong scene, while his father scowls. They also acted in this movie together.
The two would reunite, for about 10 seconds, in “Hot Shots Part Deux,” in a scene that parodies “Apocalypse Now”: Passing by each other on ships, they simultaneously stand and proclaim, “Loved you in ‘Wall Street!’”
Sly is a slow mumblemouth who solved the Cold War, but is still stuck penniless in a miserable South Philly neighborhood because his brother-in-law Paulie is an idiot. Sage is his resentful son who gets an earring.
Sage took over the role of Rocky Jr. from someone actually named Rocky Krakoff. He didn’t get great reviews, but neither did the film. Still, he acted again with his dad in “Daylight,” and appears in Vincent Gallo’s “Promises Written in Water,” which Gallo won’t let anyone see. Last year, Sage died of a heart attack at 36 years old.

Well, it’s better than ‘The Last Airbender’ Father-son sci-fi. M. Night Shyamalan tries to get out of the Smiths’ way.
Jesse Eisenberg just needed the money, which is why he’s in “Now You See Me.” / BARRY WETCHER, SUMMIT ENTERTAINMENT
Stupid magic caper. This movie makes its credibility disappear A friend once said it was wrong to seek a simple, rational understanding of Andrei Tarkovsky’s “The Mirror.” The same could be said about “Now You See Me.” The difference is that “The Mirror” is a mysterious, confounding art-film masterpiece, while “Now You See Me” is a silly magician thriller that plays like the ravings of a madman. Jesse Eisenberg headlines a comically overqualified cast as one of a quartet of sleight-of-hand experts embroiled in a simple plan: Become worldfamous magicians who, while performing in the largest auditorium in Vegas, somehow steal money from a bank in France and spread the wealth among their packed house. Why?
Review ‘Now You See Me’ Director. Louis Leterrier Stars. Jesse Eisenberg, Mark Ruffalo Rating. PG-13
•••••
How? It’s never clear. The actors look as lost as the audience: Poor Mark Ruffalo, as a detective, seems as frustrated as his character. Not since “Dreamcatcher” has a major studio product been so consistently and hilariously dumb. MATT PRIGGE
M. Night Shyamalan has had it rough the last decade, or as rough as a millionaire hot-shot Hollywood director can have it. Scorn has been heaped on his work, a lot of it earned. “The Happening” and “The Last Airbender” are dreadful (honestly, so is “The Sixth Sense”), but even those have a unique, stubborn sensibility all his own. A good deal of Shyamalan’s personality is suppressed in “After Earth,” which is perhaps not coincidentally his closest-to-good film since “Signs.” Yet another postapocalyptic romp, made in collaboration with the Smiths — that is, Will and Jaden — it stars the former as the amusingly named Cypher Raige, a space general we’re told is “so completely free of fear he’s invisible.” (Okay, then.) His son Kitai (Jaden) isn’t quite so brave. But as luck would have it, an accident strands them on the long-ago abandoned Earth. Cypher is rewarded
Will and Jaden Smith get stranded on our postapocalyptic planet in “After Earth.” / COLUMBIA PICTURES Review ‘After Earth’ Director. M. Night Shyamalan Stars. Jaden Smith, Will Smith Rating. PG-13
••••• with a pair of broken legs, leaving Kitai to man up and trek the fearsome wild to save them. “After Earth” promises a boys’ adventure on the order of Cornel Wilde’s ’60s African chase jaunt
“The Naked Prey.” It about half-delivers. “Everything on this planet has evolved to kill humans,” Cypher warns. If only. The scary futuristic animals — anry monkeys, a mega-hawk — are easily avoided, even nice when properly prodded. For a trek into the danger zone, this is curiously light on thrills and spills. Shyamalan mostly stays out of the way but makes himself known — and not in good ways. For someone who directed one of the great child performances, Shyamalan’s a terrible director of child actors. Jaden, a likable braggart in “The Karate Kid,” is only a mite less awkward and declamatory than the kids in
“The Last Airbender.” His father is another story. Playing stern and taciturn, Will Smith is cast against type, but he’s all the more imposing because he’s forcibly concealing his natural warm spirits. One forever expects him to crack a smile and say “Just kidding.” He doesn’t, ever, and that tension puts him on list of excellent actors, with Toni Colette and Paul Giamatti, who can make Shyamalan’s films — stiff, heavy, childish and borderline amateurish, if often intriguingly so — seem briefly natural.

PETER SARSGAARD The actor talks about going from film to TV by joining “The Killing.”
A KILLER INSIDE HIM The third season of AMC’s crime procedural “The Killing,” which premieres this Sunday, has a new storyline and some new cast members. Among the neophytes is Peter Sarsgaard, a talented actor who’s been among the best things in “Boys Don’t Cry,” “Garden State,” “Shattered Glass” and “An Education.” In his first season-long television stint — which he was still shooting when we talked — Sarsgaard plays Ray Seward, a sinister death row inmate who killed his wife.

On a film you’ll know the whole story, and you’ll go up to the director and say “Oh, this doesn’t seem right to me, this entire scene.” And we’ll work on it or they’ll tell me to shut the f— up. When “Modern Mediterranean” landed on our desk, we were just as enamored by the bright, happy colors and gorgeous photographs of chef Melia Marden’s stylish recipes and eclectic home as we were by her fairytale backstory. Each summer, Marden’s parents, New York artists Brice and Helen Marden, whisked their kids off to the family’s vacation home on the idyllic Greek island of Hydra. It was there, feasting on dishes such as just-caught charred whole fish and ripe vine tomatoes with tangy feta, that Marden developed her culinary ethos. Love hasn’t seen her daughter, Frances, in three years This makes my heart ache. Courtney Love, grunge’s version of Dina Lohan (alternately, The OG Amanda Bynes), admits in an interview on the “Howard Stern Show” that she hasn’t seen her daughter, Frances Bean Cobain, in three years. And yet, things are “really good” between them. “I’m really good with my daughter right now,” she told the shock jock. Despite the fact they haven’t seen each other in the flesh, they “email

Stewart’s never had, um, pizza? If Patrick Stewart’s Twitter account is to be believed, the “X-Men” star has never had a slice of pizza
— until now. Stewart posted a photo of himself indulging in some of New York’s finest, along with the caption, “My first ever pizza ‘slice.’ Please note the authentic NY fold.” It is curious, of course, that he put slice in quotes. A follow-up tweet by Stewart to offer clarification actually didn’t offer much clarification: “To clarify,” he wrote, “I’ve never had a ‘slice.’” Well, the important thing is that he has now.

and tweet.” And, really, if your mother is Courtney Love, emailing and tweeting without seeing each other is probably the stuff that happy and healthy mother-daughter relationships are made of. Love also disclosed that she’s going to appear on a reality show, but demurred as to which one. Stern desperately wants it to be “American Idol,” which, um, yes please. If not, “Duck Dynasty” could also work.
Beckham teams up with Ramsay in Las Vegas? With his days playing soccer behind him, David Beckham is clearly on the lookout for new ways to spend his time. One way, as it turns out, is teaming with pal Gordon Ramsay to open a sports bar and grill in the Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas, according to the Sun. But not so fast, everybody. Beckham’s rep insists that the rumors of the Vegas joint venture are completely unfounded, though they are opening a London restaurant, Union Street Cafe, in September.
4 3 2 Shakira wants to make sure her son never goes hungry. The “Voice” judge is so into breastfeeding her 4-month-old son Milan that she has no plans to stop until he is legally old enough to refuse. “Breastfeeding has been one of the best experiences of my life,” she told Us Weekly. “I think I’m going to breast-feed him until he goes to college!”
She continued: “I thought I was going to be super controlling,” she said. “It’s so surprising, because everybody thought I was going to be one of those hysterical, smothering mothers.” Yeah, one of those nonsmothering, relaxed mothers who insists on breast-feeding for all eternity. Good luck, Milan.

Punchdrunk’s “Sleep No More,” an immersive theater experience loosely based on the story of “Macbeth,” has been wowing audiences since 2011. More than just a show, this experience spans five stories of Chelsea’s The McKittrick Hotel (530 W. 27th St.), including the Manderley Bar, with live lounge performances that last late into the night. Following the spectacular popularity of “Sleep No More,” The McKittrick branched out to host themed party nights on occasions such as Valentine’s Day and Halloween. This season, the hotel goes one step further and is premiering additions that, as they attest, will posit The McKittrick as the area’s ultimate night-

A limited menu includes an array of sweet and savory bites devised by chef R.L. King. Gallow Green will be open nightly through autumn. The McKittrick recently hosted the premiere party for Lady Antebellum’s latest album, as well as after-parties for the Tribeca Film Festival. Horoscope
Gemini | May 22-June 20. Underestimating your competition is apt to produce undesirable results.
Virgo | Aug. 23-Sept. 22. It would be wise to support your mate in public, even if you secretly disagree with his or her position..
Cancer | June 21-July 22. It’s extremely important that you maintain a realistic but positive attitude concerning your work.
Libra | Sept. 23-Oct. 22. Instead of trying to impose your thinking on your coworkers today, first listen to their ideas and/or what they have to say.
Leo | July 23-Aug. 22. Your survival today depends on how well you can function independently of others. Don’t operate under the illusion that co-workers are looking out for anyone other than themselves.
Scorpio | Oct. 23-Nov. 21. Since finances are likely to be a touchy issue, instead of getting involved in a joint endeavor, try to handle all of your funds yourself.
Sagittarius | Nov. 22-Dec. 21. If you’re in a position of authority, be careful of how you treat your subordinates. A situation might get out of hand.
Pisces | Feb. 19-March 20. Be careful, because you follow an inclination to test your will against a another’s. It’s juvenile act that you’ll regret.
Capricorn | Dec. 22-Jan 20. If you attempt to appease associates rather than follow your judgment, your efforts could turn out to be counterproductive.
Aries | March 21-April 20. Don’t be intimidated by someone who expresses him or herself in a bold, traumatic fashion.

It’s better Waste not, to err on the complain side of not watchdogs Re: Look twice, shoot Re: Stop blaming America first (Metro, May 29) I am an American. As a citizen of a republic, I have a responsibility — not to display a flag pin or a car magnet, but to pay attention to what my government is doing, participate in public discourse and vote accordingly. If I assume something is affected by U.S. policy, but find that it’s purely a matter of Bangladeshi managerial incompetence, I’ve wasted a little time. If I err the other direction, I’ve neglected my duty. So go ahead and call me a “BAF.” That’s a label I can wear with pride.

Congress did agree in 2009 to massive infrastructure spending, but Obama wasted it on other things. Now he complains that Republicans won’t let him do that again. JIM FLETCHER, VIA E-MAIL

NFL. Big Blue hit the ďŹ eld for a second round of OTAs, with the star receiver mysteriously absent for the second time.

Giants head coach Tom Coughlin likes to use the phrase “next man up any time it’s feasible. And unfortunately for the grizzled coach, he’s had to use that credo more than he’d probably like during Big Blue’s offseason workout program. sent from Thursday’s voluntary organized team activity (OTAs), but only Nicks was unexcused — again. Nicks has given no reason for his absence, and the lack of communication on his end is certainly starting to get under the skin of Coughlin. “I have not, no. None,â€? Coughlin said when asked if he’s heard from Nicks or his representatives since he missed the last round of OTAs. “At one point, Hakeem told me he was going to be here, and then he was not here. ‌ In the strictest interpretation, everybody knows it’s a voluntary program, [but] I am not balancing [guys missing time] very well.â€? Fellow wide receiver Victor Cruz was also absent on Thursday, as he continues his contract dispute with the team. Nicks is a free agent after this season, but has not publicly said whether he will hold out for a new deal.

Niese to miss start due to shoulder pain MLB. The Mets’ No. 2 starter has been pitching with shoulder tendinitis his past three starts. Jon Niese turned in his finest start of the season in Monday’s 2-1 win. It turns out he was pitching with left shoulder tendinitis. To keep the problem from escalating further, the Mets have decided to skip his scheduled start Saturday afternoon against the Marlins. Niese’s next start would be June 7 against the Marlins. He was still sore. We had him examined this morning and soreness was still there.” Niese underwent an MRI Thursday and no structural damage appeared. He said the discomfort started after he was pounded for eight runs and eight hits in 4 1/3 innings during an 11-2 loss to Pittsburgh on May 11. Collins indicated Collin McHugh will replace Niese Saturday and emphatically stated that top pitching prospect Zach Wheeler was not a consideration. “No, no, none, none,” Collins said of any possible Wheeler promotion.
