Fighting back against unpaid internships Fair wage. Intern Justice says it is filing several lawsuits this summer over unpaid internships.

After 10-hour days photographing for look books and adding to a website for a fashion designer, Erica van Rabenswaay, 24, wondered whether she should be paid for her internship.

Van Rabenswaay sued designer Norma Kamali last week, saying the company violated federal labor laws by requiring her to work full-time without pay.

For three months, her only compensation was a MetroCard, she said.

She took the internship understanding it was unpaid, she said. Instead of mentorship or training,

she alleged in the lawsuit, which demands back wages, van Rabenswaay said what was an “apprenticeship” was instead helping Kamali, for free.

Her court filing is only the beginning. Intern Justice, a group that helps interns sue employers, warns it is the first of similar lawsuits they will issue.

“Young people think they are getting a toehold in their chosen profession,” Maurice Pianko, the founder of Intern Justice, said. “Many employers are just looking for free labor.”

Ultimately, the designer hired van Rabenswaay -— for a month, she said, when she was abruptly fired. She soon spotted an advertisement seeking another “apprentice,” she said, but offering no pay.

City offers free self-defense classes after hate crimes The City Council is offering free self-defense training throughout the city in light of a recent spike in reports of hate crimes.

The training will teach violence prevention strategies and

Gov. Andrew Cuomo charged the state DOE with coming up with a plan by June 1 after the city’s Department of Education and the United Federation of Teachers

failed to agree on a plan on their own.

At the Celebrate Israel Parade, Mayor Michael Bloomberg called King’s plan “a huge rebuff to the UFT’s obstructionism.”

However, Michael Mulgrew, the teachers’ union president, expressed satisfaction.

“The New York City Department [of Education] will not be able to fire its

way to a great school system,” Mulgrew told NY1.

With King’s evaluation system, 40 percent of teacher evaluations will be based on student performance, and 60 percent on other measures.

According to NY1, teachers who get the lowest rating two years in a row can be fired, even with tenure.

Trains. Man dead, another safe after subway incidents Saturday was a rough day for commuters as two men found themselves on the subway tracks in separate incidents with different outcomes.

One man was killed after he dropped his phone onto the tracks in the Bronx, while another made it back onto the platform safely after grappling with a mugger in Midtown.

Francisco Diego Jr., reported the loss of his phone to a station operator at the Wakefield241st Street station early Saturday morning.

He was advised to wait for help but grew impatient and attempted to reach between two cars to retrieve the lost phone.

Diego reportedly brushed the third rail and was electrocuted.

ER patient attacked A woman was sexually assaulted by another patient in the emergency room of Harlem Hospital after tak-

ing a painkiller and falling asleep, the Daily News reports. The woman, in her mid-40s, reportedly woke up at about 3 p.m. on Friday to find Tyrone Brown, 49, rubbing her

mouth with his penis.

She attempted to get away before hospital staff seized him. Brown was arrested by hospital police and taken to Bellevue Hospital for a psychiatric

evaluation. He has been charged with committing a criminal sex act.

Best of the West at annual celebration, New Taste of the Upper West Side

New Yorkers tantalized their taste buds with a weekend of gourmet food at the sixth annual New Taste of the Upper West Side on May 29 through June 1 at a grand tent that was located between West 76 and 77 streets and Columbus Avenue. The event, which celebrates the best of restaurants on the Upper West Side, culminated in the Best of the West 2013 that brought together more than 40 celebrated chefs and restaurateurs from the neighborhood. The first night of the food extravaganza on Wednesday, May 29, was Soiree in the Park, a cocktail party with proceeds benefitting Theodore Roosevelt Park. Club Getaway: Camp’s Not Just For Kids Anymore I never went to summer camp as a kid. My buddy Steve did, and tells me constantly about a similar experience for us “old” guys (two 31-year-olds) in the form of a weekend summer camp for adults called Club Getaway.

After two summers I cave in and off we go. I warn him if I awake to find my boxers waving from the flagpole or Freddie Kruger in my bed, I’m out of there, however.

We arrive, and the activity choices seem endless – waterskiing, volleyball, trapeze, mountain biking, wakeboarding, a 350-foot zip line, rock climbing, coed softball, golf, archery – even basketball with

an NBA pro. We put our iPhones down, stopped debating fantasy football and spent the entire weekend like two sports-crazed warriors.

We met a couple of cool girls which lead to doubles tennis matches, a kayaking race, hikes along the wooded trails and sailing out into the middle of the lake. They even convinced us to take a wine tasting class. Where else can you be in the wilderness, work on your serve, and learn about varietal wines all in the same afternoon? At night there was a bonfire

complete with an acoustic guitar and s’mores. The girls seemed impressed with my rendition of Kumbaya.

As we climb aboard the bus for the ride home, I tell Steve, “I can’t believe I didn’t listen to you sooner” and he comments on how maybe now I’ll take his fantasy picks more

The Residence of the Permanent Representative of Nigeria to the United Nations located at 548 South Broadway Tarrytown, New York was built in 1906 and bought by the Federal Government of Nigeria in 1960. It is a historic monument and since its purchase, no major renovation of the property has been done.

2. The Permanent Mission of Nigeria to the United Nations invites interested consultants to submit proposals for consultancy services in respect of supervision of the proposed renovation/rehabilitation of the property.

The scope of work includes the supervision of the restoration of the Main House, Guest House, Service Quarters, Squash Court, Greenhouse as well as landscaping and rehabilitation of access road leading to the property. Also included are the upgrading of the Tennis Court and the Swimming Pool, as well as the construction of a Sauna, Banquet Hall, Garages and widening of Pavement. It includes certification of the work done at various levels and the issuance of relevant certificates to the contractors.

The American soldier accused of the biggest leak of classified information in U.S. history, which prosecutors say put lives at risk, goes on trial today in a case that raises questions about the limits of secrecy and openness in the Internet era.

Pfc. Bradley Manning said the move was intended to spark renewed debate on U.S. military action. But the government says the leaks damaged national security and endangered American lives.

He faces a possible life sentence if convicted.

The military trial at Fort Meade, Md., about 30 miles northeast of Washington, is expected to run until at least late August.

Prosecutors have said they expect to call more than 100 witnesses.

Civil liberties groups say the court-martial has been shrouded in secrecy and has had a chilling effect on whistleblowers.

“It’s probably the

most dramatic example of the administration’s use of the Espionage Act to prosecute leaks of information to the media,” said Elizabeth Goitein, codirector of the Brennan Center for Justice’s Liberty and National Security Program.

Aaron McConnell doesn’t mind sharing a kitchen with seven neighbors. He’s fine in living quarters with just enough room for a twin bed, a corner desk and little else. Closets? Forget about it — he stores his clothing and other possessions on shelves and hooks.

McConnell’s small-scale home life is part of a hot trend in U.S. real estate: micro-apartments.

It’s also affordable for McConnell, 28, who pays $737 a month for his apartment in Seattle as he starts a civil engineering career.

McConnell’s are cropping up in major cities around the country to meet the demand of people who are short on cash but determined to live in areas with otherwise pricey rents.

Micros, also known as “hostel-style” apartments, usually offer less than 200 square feet, including pri-

vate bathrooms, and they typically come furnished, sometimes with built-in beds and other amenities to save space.

New York City is experimenting with microapartments. Last year, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, along with the Department of Housing Preser-

vation and Development, launched the adAPT NYC Competition, a pilot program to develop a rental building composed of micro-units, according to Bloomberg’s website.

Storm chasers among 10 killed by Okla. tornado Three storm chasers were among the 10 people killed by tornadoes that rampaged through central Oklahoma on Friday, unsettling the highly risky cottage industry of tracking tornadoes and forcing the media to rethink how they cover deadly twisters.

Tim Samaras, 55, a leading storm chaser and founder of the tornado research company Twistex, was killed in the Oklahoma City suburb of El Reno along with his son, Paul Samaras, 24, and Carl Young, 45, a Twistex meteorologist, according to Samaras’ brother.

The information came as the chief medical examiner yesterday increased the death toll to 10 after listing nine fatalities on Saturday.

Scott Barry Kaufman on the ‘Gift’ of persistence Books. The author believes that labels such as ‘gifted’ can mean big things for education.

After being rejected from Carnegie Mellon University due to his SAT scores, Scott Barry Kaufman was determined to prove that he had the chops to excel at the university. Eventually he was accepted to the prestigious school as a transfer, and he went on to graduate Phi Beta Kappa in 2003.

He later received a master’s degree from Cambridge, as well as a doctorate from Yale. He now works as a

cognitive psychologist.

So why did the SAT determine that he didn’t have the mental chops? In his latest book, “Ungifted: Intelligence Redefined,” Kaufman attempts to get to the bottom of that question — for himself, and for students everywhere who find themselves falling through the cracks.

“I think education has got to get out of the business of trying to judge a person’s potential. It’s just not something we can capture at any one moment in time,” says Kaufman.

“We’re really stuck in a false model of giftedness, where you’re either born gifted, and you will stay that way the rest of your life, or you’re not, and you

won’t ever be. That’s just not in line with current research on human development.”

“Ungifted” traces Kaufman’s unique mental maturation: He suffered severe ear infections that left him with an auditory disorder in elementary school, which led to a special education classification that was difficult to shake. Woven into his personal narrative is his research on cognitive development, plus an analysis of the major breakthroughs in his field.

“What we think of as

an ordinary mind has a lot more capacity than most people realize. If you trace the development of minds that we label “gifted” or “genius,” you see a rapid development — but there’s also passion that gets overlooked,” says Kaufman. “If we find something we’re driven to engage in day after day, hour after hour, any of us can demonstrate the kind of behavior that society labels as ‘gifted.’”

Principals can also post jobs, free of cost — different from other networking sites like LinkedIn. More important than that, they say, is improving the quality of education by allowing teachers to find the kinds of schools they most want to work in.

“Teacher quality really matters at a school, but paradoxically, teachers don’t have the same professional networks as people do in other fields,” says Natasha, who struggled to find information about teaching jobs when switching careers from fundraising. “It can be an isolating field. Your ability to find jobs that suit you and to network is fairly limited.”

Adam, who has taught high school math in the Bronx for seven years, says he faced a similar challenge when searching for the right teachers to hire at his school. “I took part of some interview processes and it was hard to find the best candidates for certain positions.”

It is possible for teachers to find jobs through the Department of Education, teachers unions and other online resources, but the McCabes hope that edPeople will help get those in their field to be more proactive. “Teachers are active, goal-oriented, assertive people. We want them to have the ability to make choices for themselves and not be passive in their careers,” Natasha said.

Another problem the website seeks to address is the high rate of teacher attrition, which is climbing according to 2013 data from the United Federation of Teachers. Nearly 10 percent of new teachers in New York City quit before their first year was finished in the 2011-2012

“Teacher turnover is a huge problem,” Adam says.

“I’ve witnessed teachers who may have been happy at one school, but because of what seems like a lack of options, they either leave NYC schools or leave teaching all together.”

The site is a labor of love for the pair, and also one of hope. EdPeople was recently launched in beta, but their ultimate mission is to have more people end up as they are — happily teaching in schools where they agree with the teaching philosophy and administration.

“If we could create a thriving, supportive professional community among city teachers, it’s a great thing for everyone — especially students,” says Natasha.

On Friday, TMZ.com published a report that Philip Seymour Hoffman completed 10 days in a detox program for abuse of narcotics and heroin.

The star, who has battled addiction in the past, apparently fell off the wagon with prescription drugs.

He eventually turned to heroin. Hoffman said he’d only been snorting the bad stuff for a week when he realized that, well, he was abusing heroin and checked himself in.

While punk rock veterans are no strangers to the Stranglersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; pedigree, the band feels as though theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve never received their due respect in America â&#x20AC;&#x201D; to the point that they even started ignoring us.

Their new record, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Giants,â&#x20AC;? was released in the U.S. last week, but it has already been out in Europe for a year. And their current North American tour is their first in 17 years. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t consider releasing it in the States until people asked us if they could release it,â&#x20AC;? says bassist/singer/founder J.J. Lissie won’t change for a guy—or the music biz Q&A. Metro talks with the folk singer about fame and staying grounded.

The first indication that Lissie is a down-to-earth chick is that, when we call her, she’s waiting in line at a gas station bathroom. Never mind that most artists travel on buses with bathrooms nicer than those in some apartments we’ve visited.

But Lissie is in her car, having just shot a music video in her hometown of Rock Island, Ill. She’s been on the road, promoting her yet-tobe-released sophomore album, which she says is more straight-up rock than previous efforts.

I wouldn’t say I feel like the same person, but I

Not that it was asked of me, but I’ve seen that other people have done it.

Say you and some other girl really liked a guy, and she was throwing herself at him all night. Maybe she gets to go home with him, but I don’t want to stoop to that level. I just want to be myself, and if he doesn’t come home with me, then he’s not the right one for me.

don’t think that that’s because anything has changed. I think as you get older, you kind of come into your personality and learn from life experiences. I put out the single “Shameless” because it’s me proclaiming that I don’t want to have to be anything other than myself to find success.

That’s a cool metaphor for fame.

Thanks! I think in the song, too, I acknowledge it … if you are in a situation and two people are going for the same thing, my inclination is to sort of retreat, where I’m like, “Well, I don’t even care. I didn’t want to be part of this stupid club.” (laughs)

Walden, with bros High school comedy. A pile of comic ringers help make a questionable youth picture better.

Like many of todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s comedies, â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Kings of Summerâ&#x20AC;? features scores of free-association ad-libbing, often by staffers on NBCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Thursday night lineup.

But give it credit: It at least has a genuinely silly plot, which is not something you can just make up on the fly. Sick of the mildly tyrannical parent-

ing of his gruff, widowed dad (Nick Offerman), Ohio high schooler Joe (Nick Robinson) convinces longtime bestie Patrick (Gabriel Basso) to run away into the woods. Nestled in the ramshackle confines of a house they will semi-competently build themselves, they plan to spend the summer like Thoreau â&#x20AC;&#x201D; which is to say, free of parental overlords. Wielding axes and even a sword, they will become men, or at least grow Williamsburg mustaches.

Of course, it still has plenty of improvising, otherwise it wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be a modern comedy. At least half of the film is dedicated to the likes of Offer-

man and Alison Brie (as his daughter, although in reality sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s only 12 years his junior). Megan Mullally plays an obliviously upbeat suburban mom whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s seen standing or sitting in rooms, spouting non sequiturs. Offerman gets the meatiest, or at least trickiest role. Saddled with very real grief, afraid of being abandoned by everyone, he has to dive into melan-

choly without bringing the film down with him. He does it effortlessly, because heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Ron Swanson.

But as with anything about high schoolers, things are bound to become a bit emo. Sure enough this bro wonderland â&#x20AC;&#x201D; which also includes a third-wheel wild card in Biaggo (Moises Arias), a creepy-eyed, toadish freak who spouts insanities like â&#x20AC;&#x153;I met a dog the other day who taught me how to dieâ&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x201D; is soon invaded by girls. Joe likes this one girl (Erin Moriarty), but said girl winds up into Patrick instead. Adolescent urges

ism is almost handled well, with Moriarty getting a few humanizing scenes.

Most of what makes â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Kings of Summerâ&#x20AC;? tolerable, though, is that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s inspired. Improvised scenes yield gnomic utterances (â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sarcasm: the poor manâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wit,â&#x20AC;? attests a Chinese food delivery man seen once), while Arias heroically avoids staleness by finding ever-weirder places to take his character. If it werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t a modern-style comedy, it might be less likable.

Considered the bible of the mental health profession, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, sets the criteria for distinguishing mental illness from normality, often determining who is sick, what treatment is offered, who pays for it, etc.

But determining what is “normal” is a relatively subjective undertaking that is influenced not only by science, but also by shifting societal pressures.

From 1952 to 1973, the DSM classified homosexuality as a mental illness.

While I often use the DSM as a guideline for understanding and treating my clients, I am also acutely aware of its limitations.

I was intrigued when I learned that the psychiatrist who led the group of mental health professionals who created the DSMIV had become the leading critic of the new DSM-V, published last month.

What you mean by “saving normal”?

Every individual experiences psychiatric symptoms from time to time. The new DSM turns grief into Major Depressive Disorder, worrying about cancer into Somatic Symptom Disorder, temper tantrums into Mood Dysregulation Disorder — and anyone

might qualify for Attention Deficit Disorder, especially because it gives legal access to stimulants.

1 in 5 is taking a psychiatric pill. This is often done after a very brief visit with a non-psychiatrist.

Why does “normal” need saving?

People who have severe symptoms need urgent diagnosis and treatment.

These people are usually being undertreated, while people with problems with everyday life are being overtreated with medication — when they could just as easily benefit from psychotherapy.

Twenty-five percent of the American population would now qualify for psychiatric diagnosis, and

What would you suggest people do to prevent this?

People should take as much care when they “buy” a psychiatric diagnosis as when they buy a house or car. Always go to a psychiatrist for a mental health evaluation.

If the diagnosis seems to fit, ask lots of questions. If you don’t get reasonable answers, get a second or third opinion. Kids are especially hard to diagnose — and often, problems will resolve on their own.

Diagnosis should also be done over several weeks to see how things evolve.

Most problems get better without pills, which should be reserved for severe symptoms that are causing marked impairment.

Preventing the drug companies from advertising to consumers, which is legal only in the United States.

The drug companies use slick and misleading marketing techniques to convince people that problems of everyday life are mental disorders due to a chemical imbalance that requires a pill solution. Mental illness shouldn’t be pedaled like cars and beer.

Pettitte ready to take back spot in rotation MLB. The team plans to limit his throwing between starts in the future.

The Yankees rotation just got a little bit older. But don’t expect to hear anyone complaining.

Andy Pettitte will return to the mound tonight

against Cleveland for the first time since his back locked up two batters into the fifth inning on May 14 against Seattle. After getting hurt, he rested for seven days before resuming throwing.

To prepare for his return start, Pettitte said he threw only one bullpen session. He may do the same in the future after he consults with pitching

coach Larry Rothchild and trainers.

“I feel like I haven’t had any work, really,” Pettitte said. “I’m not a power guy.

I’m kind of touch and feel, so I just feel like [two bullpens] really helps me. We’ll see. I’m not really sure.

“I’m going to want to throw my bullpens because I enjoy getting on the mound and I enjoy working. I’ll just have to

see. We’ll see how it feels.

It’ll be something that I kind of talk through with Larry and the trainers and stuff like that.

Pettitte is 4-3 with a 3.83 ERA in eight starts and will be looking for his 250th career victory. Before injuring himself, he allowed two runs and five hits over seven innings at Kansas City, following a three-start stretch where

he felt he had little command of his cut fastball.

“I want to go out there and get going again, get on a good roll,” Pettitte said. “I want to go out there and be consistent. You saw that I’ve been doing that when I’ve been pitching over the last few years.”

won the initial game and this past year’s contest, with a win by Rutgers sandwiched in between.

Rangers fans looking for the next Mark Messier to lead them to the Stanley Cup may have to be satisfied with the old one.

The 52-year-old isn’t returning to the ice, but Messier is reportedly interested in the team’s head coaching job, despite no previous coaching experience.

The Rangers fired John Tortorella on May 29 after being bounced from the playoffs in the second round by Boston.

ESPN New York reports there is mutual interest and Messier will at least get an interview.

Messier already works within the organization as a special adviser to general manager Glen Sather.

Former Jets coach joins Niners staff After taking his talents to ESPN, the Jets’ last coach before Rex Ryan, Eric Mangini, is heading west.

Mangini has left his position as an analyst and accepted a job as offensive consultant for the 49ers. He will reportedly be in charge of breaking down the opponents’ defenses and devising a game plan around it.

After being fired from the Jets in 2008, Mangini spent two seasons as head coach with Cleveland. METRO

NHL. Ryan Callahan, Carl Hagelin undergo weekend surgeries Two of the Rangers’ top players went under the knife for surprise surgeries over the weekend.

The team announced captain Ryan Callahan and fifth-leading scorer Carl Hagelin each had surgeries to repair a torn labrum in their left shoulders.

The Rangers made no mention of the injuries prior to Friday.

Neither were apparently hindered, as they were two of the few players of the team not to struggle in the playoffs. They combined for five goals and six assists in 12 games. METRO
