The online reaction was swift. A chorus of Twitter users called the University of New Mexico associate professor a bigot while a psychologist in Wales sent a letter to the head of the UNM psychology department expressing his outrage. Echoing real life. A photographer stages violent scenes on Brooklyn streets. “Violent Material,” a photo series by Brooklynbased photographer Steven Brahms, depicts men on the streets of Greenpoint and Williamsburg wielding guns in poses that recall action flicks and movie posters, their faces menacing, their hands gripping firearms that looks real. But is it alarming? That is the question Brahms poses: Have these cinematic archetypes become so ubiquitous as to no longer elicit a startled reaction? “I just thought to myself: ‘I wonder what that would actually look like, if I saw a guy with a gun on my street,’” Brahms said. With 25 people shot on city streets this past weekend, some New Yorkers don’t have to wonder about that question. According to the Daily News, this past weekend’s shootings made up 5 percent of this year’s approximately 440 shootings. Brahms had a permit from the city, so his crew was accompanied by a uniformed NYPD officer. Brahms found his subjects through Craigslist

But the process of taking the photos aligned with his feelings about the desensitizing effect

of this kind of imagery of men with guns. “That was what was so weird,” he said. “As soon as you take the picture, instantly [that tension] kind of deteriorates, and it’s not that interesting because you’ve seen it before and you’re seeing it again.” In fact, the images appearing in Tuesday’s Metro will be yet another instance of that, Brahms noted: “It’s part of the project now,” he said. “It’s very cool.”

‘Cronut’ creates black market for pastries Business. The new sweet treat has taken the city’s taste buds and wallets by storm. A little pastry with a funny name is causing an outsized frenzy on the island of Manhattan, where renowned chef Dominique Ansel is selling only 250 “cronuts” — half croissant, half donut — each day out of his SoHo bakery. The cronuts, which debuted on May 10, became a sensation almost overnight, quickly becoming the latest must-have delicacy for the city’s elite. But the only way to get a cronut is to wait in line in the morning, and as salivating customers began queueing at the crack of dawn — attempting to

was only a matter of time before a black market in cronuts popped up on Craigslist, as enterprising hustlers with a little time on their hands began offering to wait in line for cronuts (there’s a limit of six per order) and to deliver them to people around the city at sky-high markups. The black market cronut dealers sell the creations for prices ranging from about $15 per cronut in Manhattan to a whopping $40 if you live in Brooklyn. As the sweet treat fury continues, Ansel has already trademarked the name “cronut.” Despite the success of his creation, the chef is reportedly refusing to raising the price of the treats or to “sell out” by turning his bakery into a cronut-only operation.

Nassau County authorities arrested 104 men for allegedly soliciting sex for money from undercover cops in a month-long sting called “Operation Flush the Johns,� the Daily News reported. Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice reportedly hoped to send a message to men

who pay for sex. In a statement, Rice said that sex workers “too often remain the prime targets in prostitution investigations, while the johns who fuel the exploitation are treated as mere witnesses.� The encounters were arranged through the website Backpage.com, and then captured on hidden cameras in hotel rooms, Rice’s office said. When the men arrived at the hotel room, they would be met by an undercover officer posing as a prostitute. As soon as money was offered, the men would be arrested and charged.

All 104 men pleaded not guilty. The maximum sentence each would face is one year in jail.

A 15-year-old Bronx girl was shot in the leg Saturday night as she placed her life in danger to run and save a toddler’s life, The Daily News reports. Sarah Riviera was standing outside her apartment building on Kelly Street near Westchester Avenue about 10:30 p.m. when she heard multiple gunshots in the area. As several people ran for cover, Riviera spotted a toddler who was in a stroller and rushed to help push the tot to safety.

“Everybody started running, so I went to grab the carriage,” Riviera told the News. “As I pushed it, the bullet hit me.” The teen was then shot in the leg and was transported to Lincoln Hospital in stable condition, police said. Witnesses said that the baby’s father tied his shirt around Riviera’s leg

until help finally arrived. Doctors say that they expect Riviera to make a full recovery. Meanwhile, cops are now searching for 23-year-old Raheem Simon, whom they say may be responsible for firing the gun. Simon is described as a black male, 5-foot-8 and weighing 185 lbs. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers hotline at 800-577-TIPS. Flags at half-staff for Fort Drum soldier New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has ordered that flags at all state government buildings be flown at half-staff tomorrow, in honor of Pfc. Mariano M. Raymundo, a Fort Drum soldier who died in Sharan, Afghanistan, on Saturday. The circumstances of Raymundo’s death are still under investigation at this time, and no more details have been released, according to the governor’s office. Justices. Police can take DNA upon arrest In a major victory for law enforcement agencies, a divided Supreme Court yesterday ruled that police can take a DNA sample from someone who has been arrested and charged but not convicted of a serious crime. On a 5-4 vote, the court reversed a decision last April by Maryland’s highest court that overturned the 2010 conviction and life sentence of Alonzo Jay King for a rape committed seven years earlier.

Five-term New Jersey Senator Frank Lautenberg dies at 89

In an opinion written by Justice Anthony Kennedy, the court handed a victory to the state of Maryland by saying that taking DNA samples from arrestees was similar to taking fingerprints. Of the 50 states, 29 have such laws along with the federal government. DNA samples can be taken if police have probable cause to detain a suspect facing charges relating to a serious offense, Kennedy said. REUTERS

Frank Lautenberg, a selfmade multimillionaire businessman who became a leading liberal in the Senate and championed smoking bans, gun control, airline safety and rail transportation, died yesterday at 89, an aide said. Lautenberg’s office said in February 2010 that he had been diagnosed with cancer and would have chemotherapy. That June, he said he had recovered completely. A co-founder, former chairman and chief executive of the payroll services company Automatic Data Processing, he was elected as a Democrat by New Jersey voters to five six-year terms in

the Senate. He was first elected in 1982, running after incumbent Democrat Harrison Williams quit in a bribery scandal. Lautenberg retired from the Senate in 2000, saying he was tired of chasing campaign contributions. But in 2002, he came out of political retirement at age 78, filling the seat of Robert Torricelli, who dropped his re-election bid amid corruption charges involving improper gifts from a businessman. Boston fire chief resigns over bombing response Public safety. The criticism of Abraira stands in contrast to praise offered to Police Commissioner Ed Davis. Boston Fire Chief Steve Abraira resigned yesterday, citing public criticism from his deputies over his response to the deadly Boston Marathon bombings. Abraira’s deputies complained in a letter to the mayor that their chief had failed to assume command when he reached the scene at the race’s finish line on April 15, where pressurecooker bombs had exploded in a crowd of thousands. Ford Motor Co. is recalling 465,000 2013 models to check for fuel tank leaks that could result in a fire. The automaker said it won’t have enough replacement parts for all owners until September. Models include the 2013 Ford Fusion, Flex, Explorer, Taurus, Interceptor Sedan and Interceptor Utility, as well as the 2013 Lincoln MKZ, MKS and MKT. Ford said a fuel delivery module in the tank could leak.

Apple Inc. has signed an agreement with Warner Music Group for music licenses in a push to create a streaming music service. It will unveil the plan at a conference next week, the New York Times and Wall Street Journal reported yesterday, citing anonymous sources. Apple has been considering a musicstreaming service to complement iTunes for the past year, but progress has been slow in hashing out deals with music companies.

Fire kills 119 people inside locked slaughterhouse A blaze at a locked poultry slaughterhouse in northeast China killed at least 119 people yesterday, with several still unaccounted for, officials and state media said. The tragedy triggered online outrage in a country with a grim record on fire safety. The fire broke out just after dawn near Dehui in Jilin province. The provincial government said it sent more than 500 firefighters and more than 270 doctors and nurses

US comes to Syrian peace effort ‘late,’ Kerry says Death toll. At least 80,000 people have lost their lives in the two-year uprising against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. The United States came “late” to an effort to end the Syrian civil war and is trying to prevent the total collapse of the country, Secretary of State John Kerry said yesterday. “This is a very difficult process, which we come to late,” Kerry said at a news conference, speaking of a U.S.-Russian effort to bring the warring parties to a peace conference in Geneva that might lead to a transitional government. “We are trying to prevent the sectarian violence

from dragging Syria down into a complete and total implosion where it has broken up into enclaves and the institutions of the state have been destroyed, with God knows how many additional refugees and how many innocent people killed,” he added. An imperfect heroine What do you love about Joanna that you wanted to see her through another adventure? I was very determined to write a woman who was different from most standard historical characters. I wanted her to be London, all told through the lens of a woman who only ever wanted a quiet life as a nun.

The National’s guitarist had to push back this interview twice because he was visiting the doctor for a stiff neck, an occupational hazard. “I think it might have been from that six-hour ‘Sorrow’ thing,” he says, before adding, “We played the same song for six hours and my back was super tight from that and it never really relaxed.” Dessner, who writes most of the band’s music with his brother Bryce, apologizes if he seems a little loopy from painkillers — but he seems to be making a lot of sense, discussing the band’s brilliant new album “Trouble Will Find Me.”

think it’s just an evolution of trying to do that more. The defining statement of the album seems to be “everything that I love is on the table” from the song, “Don’t Swallow the Cap.” Do you think that’s true? I think that’s a good point. It’s like he’s laying it all out there. And I think in a way, lyrically, this record is the most verbose, and the most direct and personal, in places. And in a weird way it pretty much encapsulates everything we’ve ever done. So, yeah, I think that’s fair to say that’s a defining line.

THIS TIME, THEY’RE ‘LAYING IT ALL OUT THERE’

Let’s talk about the new album. For you and your brother, this is your first credit as producers. How was the process different? In the past we’ve had a lot of engineering help from people, and we also did with this record, but essentially Bryce and I sit around the studio and mess with things all the time and record all of it ourselves and do a

lot of the arranging. But the way we made this record is not actually different from the way that we made any of the other ones. Whether it says “Produced by The National” or whatever, we work together as a band, but oftentimes Bryce and

I write the music and we’re just sitting around for hours upon hours just messing with sound. There’s a lot of dual voices going on with this album. We’ve always used other voices as kind of a silver

In the IRA saga “Shadow Dancer,” rising English star Andrea Riseborough (“Oblivion”) delivers what might as well be termed “The Heath Ledger Performance.” Like his performance in “Brokeback Mountain,” hers is completely internalized, free of emotion. It’s not that she feels nothing or has no inner life, but rather that all feelings are locked inside the body. The audience is reduced to scanning her stony exterior for signs of life, fruitlessly and fascinatingly. There’s a reason for her opacity: Her character, Colette, has been traumatized into working for the IRA. An opening set in 1973 finds her little brother accidentally killed during an attack. This hardens her enough that, 20 years later, she plants a bomb in a subway station. Colette’s plan is thwarted and she’s carted off by authorities, at which point Mac (Clive Owen), an intense but rugged MI5 officer, finds her weak spot: she has a young son. She finds herself in an impossible situation, having to choose between losing her son and ratting out her connected family. Like most films on the Irish Troubles, “Shadow Dancer” takes a neutral stance. But it doesn’t hold back on depicting the brutishness on both sides. Both

the IRA and the MI5 act like mafia thugs; if they’re not torturing people physically, they’re doing it psychologically. Director James Marsh, a part-time documentarian who made “Man on Wire” and “Project Nim,” offers a cool, detached tone that’s nonetheless sick with claustrophobic dread. For most of the length there doesn’t appear to be any way out for Colette, nor anyone else. “Shadow Dancer” lets the impossibility of the situation sit there for most of its length, before a more or less sudden shock twist. It’s a thinking person’s thriller, but it could stand to be if not more taut, then at least more probing. Riseborough is effortlessly fantastic, and she has a vulnerable, pouty look that clashes nicely with how little vulnerability she tries to convey. But the film spends a lot of its length stalled, and can’t help but trade in stock situations. The evolution of Colette and Mac’s relationship — is it interrogation… or is it love? — breaks up the slight monotony, but it’s an element from a less smart picture.

Ellen Page is ‘strictly freegan’ At 20, Ellen Page became a star playing Juno in the film of the same name. She was nominated for an Academy Award and went on to star in movies such as “Whip It� and “Inception.� But first, she took some time off. “I studied permaculture, design and eco-village development at a place called Lost Valley in Oregon with a lot of people who had the same philosophy — strictly freegan,� she says. Freeganism, or the practice of salvaging discarded food, was just one of the things that fascinated Page during her month-long stay at the settlement. The experience taught her to live simply and to really think about her relationship with the planet. It also prepared her for “The East,� a new eco-thriller co-starring Al-

That is a wild ride to go on. ANDREA RISEBOROUGH “Shadow Dancer” star remembers living through the IRA conflict.

RISING ABOVE THE TROUBLES Andrea Riseborough is poised to become the latest major British export. Though most Americans will recognize her as Tom Cruise’s partner/ lover in “Oblivion,” the English actress has had many high-profile homeland roles for big directors: She was one of Sally Hawkins’ friends in Mike Leigh’s “HappyGo-Lucky,” the gullible girlfriend in “Brighton Rock” and Wallis Simpson in Madonna’s “W.E.” In “Shadow Dancer,” in theaters now, she plays a Northern Ireland woman in 1993 working for the IRA and forced by an MI5 officer (Clive Owen) to turn snitch on her connected family. What were some things you discovered about people living it directly as you prepped for the film? They were born into it. This didn’t begin in 1922, of course. It

goes back to the 1000s. The island’s been in so much turmoil for such a long time. But they got through it. How they got through it, I discovered, was all the women were on pills and all the men were drinking vodka. It was a situation in which you’d say goodbye to your kids on their way to school in the morning, and you had no idea whether they were going to return at the end of the day. And I’m really not sure how people get through that, other than just living it. There aren’t many films on the Troubles that focus on women. Our industry seems to have grossly misrepresented female involvement in the Troubles. There were so many strong women — and weak women — involved in the struggle. Of course, it’s a no-brainer. Who are you going to

put on the tube with a bomb? Are you going to put someone who looks horribly conspicuous in a black leather jacket, a skinhead, a big guy? Or are you going to use someone easy to overlook? Your character doesn’t speak much. What are the difficulties in conveying her inner turmoil through silence? She didn’t start out that way. She spoke more. Silence is her strength, truly. And at that time of paranoia, deep paranoia, when you couldn’t trust family members, let alone friends, it just seemed very authentic to us to have her not talk much. We had a responsibility to be authentic, because there were so many people hurt and affected by this conflict.

Sports. Find the right team for your child. With deadlines approaching for summer — and even fall — sports teams, now is the time to find the right environment for your children. But identifying the right one out of a slew of options can be stressful, and experts suggest taking the time to find the right fit. Luis Fernando Llosa, a co-author of “Beyond Winning: Smart Parenting in a Toxic Sports Environment,” recommends waiting until kids are 11 or 12 to sign them up — something he acknowledges is unusual. This allows children time for developmental stages, he said, “rather than having a coach barking at them all the time and telling them what to do.” Those barking coaches

One of the greatest point guards of all time has hung it up for good. The Knicks announced yesterday that Jason Kidd will retire from the NBA. Kidd spent the last season with the Knicks, but will be remembered most for his time in Phoenix, New Jersey and Dallas. Kidd, 40, was signed to a three-year deal by the Knicks last off-season, but struggled in the postseason despite a solid regular season backing up Raymond Felton. He averaged 6.3 points, 4.3 rebounds

and 3.3 assists per game, but he did not score in his final 10 postseason games. “My time in professional basketball has been an incredible journey, but one that must come to an end after 19 years,” Kidd said. He became a legendary player after being traded to the Nets in July 2001 for Stephon Marbury. It was there he teamed up with Kenyon Martin, Kerry Kittles and later Richard Jefferson to form one of the best teams of the 2000s. He led the Nets to the NBA Finals in 2002 and 2003, losing both times. Kidd finally got his only title in 2011 after a return to Dallas.

Steinbrenner ‘disappointed’ in Rodriguez MLB. The Yankees’ owner addressed a wide range of issues related to the team. Managing general partner Hal Steinbrenner was at Yankee Stadium to announce a new eightyear contract with the Big Ten conference for the Pinstripe Bowl. After fielding a few questions in a televised press conference about the new agreement, Steinbrenner addressed a number of topics about the Yankees. The biggest was Alex Rodriguez, whose contract came up Sunday night when general manager Brian Cashman told ESPN he likely can’t live up the 10-year contract negotiated following the 2007 season. “It’s a big contract to live up to. I didn’t see Brian’s comments, to be honest you,� Steinbrenner said. “Look, we just help he comes back healthy as he did in ‘09 after the surgery and we hope he contributes in a big way. He’s a heck of an athlete — and if the surgery has fixed the problem, you may see good things out of him. NOTICE is hereby provided of the automatic orders in this matrimonial action pursuant to Domestic Relations Law § 236(B)(2)(b): With respect to matrimonial actions commenced on or after September 1, 2009, the automatic orders shall be binding upon the plaintiff in a matrimonial action immediately upon the filing of the summons, or summons and complaint, and upon the defendant immediately upon the service of the automatic orders with the summons. The automatic orders shall remain in full force and effect during the pendency of the action, unless terminated, modified or amended by further order of the court upon motion of either of the parties or upon written agreement between the parties duly executed and acknowledged. (1) Neither party shall sell, transfer, encumber, conceal, assign, remove or in any way dispose of, without the consent of the other party in writing, or by order of the court, any property (including, but not limited to, real estate, personal property, cash accounts, stocks, mutual funds, bank accounts, cars and boats) individually or jointly held by the parties, except in the usual course of business, for customary and usual household expenses or for reasonable attorney’s fees in connection with this action. (2) Neither party shall transfer, encumber, assign, remove, withdraw or in any way dispose of any tax deferred funds, stocks or other assets held in any individual retirement accounts, 401K accounts, profit sharing plans, Keough accounts, or any other pension or retirement account, and the parties shall further refrain from applying for or requesting the payment of retirement benefits or annuity payments of any kind, without the consent of the other party in writing, or upon further order of the court. (3) Neither party shall incur unreasonable debts hereafter, including, but not limited to further borrowing against any credit line secured by the family residence, further encumbrancing any assets, or unreasonably using credit cards or cash advances against credit cards, except in the usual course of business or for customary or usual household expenses, or for reasonable attorney’s fees in connection with this action. (4) Neither party shall cause the other party or the children of the marriage to be removed from any existing medical, hospital and dental insurance coverage, and each party shall maintain the existing medical, hospital and dental insurance coverage in full force and effect. (5) Neither party shall change the beneficiaries of any existing life insurance policies, and each party shall maintain the existing life insurance, automobile insurance, homeowners and renters insurance policies in full force and effect.
