Bulger greets those who could decide his future Whitey trial. The jury selection process began yesterday.

Alleged mob boss James “Whitey” Bulger yesterday greeted the hundreds of people who will potentially decide his fate with a “good morning.”

Bulger’s attorney J.W. Carney Jr. gave a brief introduction of his client to the potential

jurors who were called to the federal courthouse in South Boston.

“I’m pleased to introduce our client ... James Bulger,” Carney said.

“Good morning,” said Bulger.

“Good morning,” the potential jurors responded.

That exchange ended the first of at least three sessions in which Judge Denise Casper introduced the potential jurors to the case.

The jury pool was a mix of men and women of all ages and backgrounds. Many were reading books until prosecutors and defense lawyers walked in along with Bulger. One elderly man went back to reading his

magazine and yawned shortly after Bulger walked into the jury assembly room.

The former fugitive, 83, appeared before them wearing a long-sleeved T-shirt tucked into his jeans. He does not have to wear his standard orange prison jumpsuit during his trial.

Hundreds of people filled out a questionnaire after Casper addressed them. Their answers will be reviewed by prosecutors and Bulger’s defense team.

Some of the candidates will be

questioned later this week.

Casper repeatedly told the group that Bulger pleaded not guilty to the charges against him and that he is to be presumed innocent.

She also told them that just because they may have previously read something or heard something about Bulger, it doesn’t mean they can’t serve.

A survey released yesterday shows that nearly 40 percent of Massachusetts motorists send texts while driving.

Car insurance carrier Plymouth Rock Assurance polled 500 Bay State drivers, and found that despite warnings about distracted driving, 25 percent of motorists say they will not change their mobile device habits.

It’s not all bad news — 96 percent of respondents said they wouldn’t text while driving with a child in the car.

Explosion. Possible natural gas blast on New York college campus A possible natural gas explosion blew out windows of a historic building at Nyack College north of New York City yesterday, injuring seven faculty members, a Rockland County sheriff’s spokesman said.

Boston Conservatoryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;Shelterâ&#x20AC;? gives voice to a subset of women not often heard in our society, let alone a pop-rock musical: members of the homeless community. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The more we explored these characters, the more we wanted it to see where they came from, and what they would do,â&#x20AC;? says Brittany Bullen, one of the showâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s creators.

What you should know about GMOs Health. It’s a controversial topic.

Here are the facts.

It’s hard to get 91 percent of Americans to agree on anything, but one thing 91 percent of us do agree on is that genetically modified foods should be labeled as such. Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are crops made with DNA from foreign species — think taking DNA from an eel and inserting it into salmon to make it larger (which, by the way, is a reality today).

Genetically engineered crops have been in the U.S. since the mid-1990s, says Britt Lundgren, the director of Organic & Sustainable Agriculture at Stonyfield Farm, Inc., which is behind the Just Label It movement to create a label similar to the organic label for GMOs. What started as a means of enhancing crops like corn, cotton, soy and canola in the U.S. is now the way the majority of some crops are produced. For example, 93 percent of the soy that we grow now is genetically engineered, as is 90 percent of our corn. “We’re really heavily investing in this without letting folks know that this is a part of their diets,” Lundgren says.

Detractors of GMOs argue

that their health risks are not known to us. “If you’re allergic to eel and you eat this [genetically modified] salmon, are you going to react?” asks Lundgren. Though the FDA argues that genetically modified products are safe to eat, others beg to differ. Bt toxin, an insecticide in some GMO corn, has shown up in the bloodstreams of 93 percent of pregnant women and 80 percent of their fetuses, according to GMO-Free NY. But some think GMOs aren’t all that bad. The biotech industry claims that genetically engineered foods help feed the world and reduce hunger.

And some scientists aren’t convinced that the process is all that radical.

“Genetic engineering is not all that different from conventional plant breeding,” says Dr. Walter De Jong, an associate professor of plant breeding and genetics at Cornell University. He says that when crops are conventionally bred, they undergo a great deal of change anyway. “There is this widespread concern that [adding] a gene by genetic engineering is really messing with nature,” he adds. “In terms of the scale of what’s happened, the amount of change that we’ve introduced is quite small.”

Check the label. “The organic regulations prohibit the use of GMOs, so anything with an organic label will have been produced without GMOs,” Lundgren says.

Check the number. Is your produce’s sticker a fivedigit number starting with eight? It’s a GMO. Four-digit numbers mean a product was conventionally made.

Five-digit numbers beginning with nine mean it’s organic.

Check the logo. Look for a little butterfly symbol on packaged foods — it’s the mark of the Non-GMO Project, a third-party verification system.

Pens far from mighty heading into Game 3 NHL playoffs. The Penguins have already become the brunt of jokes heading into tonight’s Game 3.

From a distance, the Pittsburgh Penguins look nearly unbeatable. They are a game of NHL ’13 come to life. Perhaps no other team in the NHL can match their collection of world-class talent with players like Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Jarome Iginla, Kris Letang, etc. However, after watching the Penguins lose the first two games of the 2013 Eastern Conference Finals at home to the Bruins (3-0 and 6-1), you start to see the numerous warts on Pittsburgh and the reasons why it lost in the first round the past two seasons.

Boston will never match Pittsburgh’s skill level but that doesn’t matter since the B’s have bought into an outstanding system that allows everyone to play a specific role. If the Penguins stars aren’t scor-

ing goals, what exactly is their role?

The Bruins have done a brilliant job exposing the Penguins main weaknesses in shaky defensemen, forwards that don’t want to play two ways and goaltenders that are easily rattled. It only took two periods in Game 1 to see how much Crosby and Malkin were out of their element as the former bumped Tuukka Rask and the latter fought Patrice Bergeron in a misguided attempt to fire up his team.

The Pens have plenty of physical players, so they can employ that style to a point.

But their numerous attempts to intimidate Boston have been muted for the most part.

The only statistic that the Penguins have a decided advantage in so far are hits:

they’ve outhit the Bruins 7138. Pittsburgh has been so focused on taking the body that their defensemen have taken themselves out of plays or even worse, coughed up the puck in key areas (20 giveaways this series to Boston’s 3), which has led to a bunch of goals for the B’s.
