Knock it off

Many imitators. B. Gold NYC’s Sigil collection has been ripped off by a flood of cheap copycats after 50 Cent wore one of their hats. No protection. New York fashion design companies have little recourse once someone decides to appropriate their design and make profit of the company’s hard work. PAGE 02

Fashion trends. A designer is helpless as imitators knockoff their collection. They’re all over the place, those brimmed hats covered in gold pins: 28th Street, Canal Street, Flushing. Made in China, you can buy them for a few bucks — and for the men behind the design, their ubiquity is a compliment and a curse. “A friend told me he’s seeing them around London now,” said Maximo Garcia, the marketing force behind B. Gold NYC, whose Sigil collection sparked

imitations once 50 Cent began wearing the hats. The exposure helped create buzz for their line. For Garcia and his partner, designer Winston B. Holder, it was proof they were onto something. And with no legal re-

course available as long as the bootlegs don’t attempt to pass themselves off as the real thing, their only option is to stay one step ahead of the game. The arms-race approach may be the best option available to B. Gold, as the Innovative Design Protection Act, introduced by New York Sen. Chuck Schumer, stalled out in Congress. If passed, the legislation would provide protection to original designs. In the meantime, B. Gold will just have to keep outsmarting the copycats.

A radio ad campaign is invoking famed Queens punk rock band the Ramones to entice beachgoers back to the Rockaways this summer. The campaign hopes to infuse tourism dollars into an economy that was shattered by Hurricane Sandy. The siren song being used is the band’s hit

“Rockaway Beach,” off the 1977 album Rocket to Russia. The radio ads are being paid for by the Queens Economic Development Corporation and will run Fridays and Saturdays throughout the summer on WFAN, WINS and WCBS. EMILY JOHNSON

A traffic stop gone awry killed a 4-yearold girl on the Upper West Side yesterday, according to police. Officers pulled over a car driving recklessly at 8:15 a.m. near West 97th Street and Amsterdam Avenue, cops said. When they approached the car on foot, the driver took off and jumped the curb, pinning 4-year-old Ariel Russo and her 55-year-old grandmother against a building. Russo was pronounced dead at St. Luke’s Hospital at 9:02 a.m. Franklin Reyes, 17, was arrested and charged with manslaughter. Cops said Reyes, who has only a learner’s permit, told police he took his mother’s car without her permission and was on his way to school. DANIELLE TCHOLAKIAN

Gov. Cuomo introduces Women’s Equality Act

Albany. A sex traďŹƒcking victim pleads for passage of protective laws. Gov. Andrew Cuomo introduced his Women’s Equality Act legislation yesterday. The most controversial part of the 10-point plan would expand state laws regarding abortion access, bringing their scope up to that of federal law. But one young woman present at the announcement told a story that highlighted the importance of a part of the legislation lost in the criticism of abortion access: beefing up the penalties for sex traffickers and enhancing the protection of their victims. When she was 9 years old, Brianna was kidnapped in New York City

by her school janitor. He raped her and sold her to a pimp. She was sold “to men who knew [her] age and bought sex because of it, she said. When she was 13 years old, the police finally came — but not to rescue her.

“I was arrested and placed in handcuffs as a prostitute, she said. “I was called a prostitute even though I was a child. Her pimp was eventually convicted of kidnapping and will serve about four years, Brianna said. “This man who owned me as a slave, who sold me to child rapists, deserves to be punished more harshly, she said. Under the Women’s Equality Act, proving “coercion would no longer be required in sex trafficking prosecution when the victims are minors. The bill would increase the penalties for trafficking and establish an affirmative defense in prostitution trials when the defendant is a sex trafficking victim.

Guns. Kelly orders more resources in response to violence In response to the more than two dozen shootings in the city this weekend, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly announced that police resources will be added to help suppress further violence, including additional uniformed officers in housing developments, more plainclothes officers in anti-crime units and the deployment of surveillance towers. A total of 26 people were shot between Friday night and Sunday — seven of them fatally, according to the NYPD. Three of the non-fatal shooting victims were under the age of 16, police said. The Warrants Division in the precincts which had multiple shootings will be focusing on arresting any individuals wanted on outstanding warrants, Deputy Commissioner Paul Browne said in a statement. An 11-year-old girl who was feared paralyzed after being shot in the neck last week was reportedly able to move her arms at Columbia University Hospital yesterday. Despite reports saying the stray bullet had severed Tayloni Mazyck’s spine and she would never walk again, the girl’s mother, Priscilla Mazyck, 46, told the Daily News there were signs of hope as she moved her arms. Kane Cooper, 17, was arrested for shooting Mazyck when she stepped outside of her Brooklyn home and into the line of fire as he aimed at two men. Tea Party and other conservative groups delivered an emotional plea for Washington to rein in government overreach yesterday as they told lawmakers about how the Internal Revenue Service targeted them with relentless paperwork and intrusive questions when they sought tax-exempt status. “This was not an accident. This is a willful act of intimidation intended

to discourage a point of view, said Becky Gerritson, president of a Tea Party group in Wetumpka, Alabama. She tearfully described how she and her husband had to seek legal counsel when confronted with questionnaires about their donors, communications with legislators and their voter education activities. “I’m not interested in scoring political points. I want to protect and preserve the America I grew up in, Gerritson said. Multiple congressional committees and the De-

partment of Justice have opened probes into the matter. They are trying to determine if the IRS had a political agenda in subjecting these groups to extra scrutiny, or if workers in the tax-exempt division chose partisan criteria as a way to cope with a flood of applications starting in 2010. Current and former officials have defended IRS employees by saying they were given a challenging task of determining the level of political activity among 501(c)4 groups. REUTERS

A government watchdog pointed to a spoof “Star Trek video and use of luxury hotel rooms as examples of lavish spending by the IRS, adding to questions over the taxation agency’s credibility.

Judge accepts insanity plea from Holmes Theater shooter. The accused gunman could still face execution if he’s convicted of killing 12 people. Accused Colorado theater gunman James Holmes, who could face execution if convicted of killing 12 moviegoers last summer, entered a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity yesterday. It was accepted by Arapahoe County District Judge Carlos Samour Jr. during a 90-minute hearing that capped months of legal wrangling over the consequences of an insanity defense. The new plea, which replaced a standard notguilty plea entered in March, requires prosecutors to prove Holmes was mentally capable of knowing right from wrong at the time of the alleged crime in order to win a conviction. The decision to mount an insanity defense also poses potential new pitfalls for the defense, opening Holmes to possible selfincrimination because he

An American tourist was gang-raped by a group of men in a hill resort in northern India, police said yesterday, in the latest of a series of attacks that have thrown the spotlight on women’s safety in the world’s largest democracy. U.S. blacklists Iranian ‘front’ companies A global network of private companies was blacklisted by the United States yesterday for providing revenue to the Iranian government’s leadership and helping it evade the pinch from international sanctions on Tehran’s nuclear program, the Treasury Department said. The move targets 37 companies spread across the world, from Iran to Croatia, Germany and South Africa, and is the fourth action the U.S. has taken in the past week to sanction Iran’s government and industries over its atomic program. The sanctions prohibit U.S. citizens and companies from dealing with the firms. Any foreign financial institutions dealing with them risk getting cut off from the U.S. financial system. The Treasury Department said the companies are governed by the Execution of Imam Khomeini’s Order, or EIKO — a program set up by Iran’s leadership to manage its commercial holdings — and earn tens of billions of dollars in profits. Turkey’s deputy PM seeks to calm anti-government protests Apology. Arinc’s stance in opposition to that of country’s prime minister. Turkey’s deputy prime minister apologized yesterday for “excessive violence” by police in an effort to defuse days of unrest, comments which contrasted sharply with Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan’s defiant dismissal of the protesters. With Erdogan abroad and strikes and demonstrations still rumbling on after five days, Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc sought to assuage some of the anger at the government’s initial hard-line response to what began as a sit-in against plans to build on an Istanbul park. “The excessive violence that was used in the first instance against those who were behaving with respect for the environment is wrong and unfair,” Arinc told a news conference in the capital Ankara. “I apologize to those citizens.” “But,” he added, “I don’t think we owe an apology to those who have caused damage in the streets and tried to prevent people’s freedom.” Arinc said he would meet some of the organizers of the original protest,

campaigning against plans to build a replica Ottomanera barracks on Istanbul’s Gezi Park in Taksim Square. It appeared too little too late to end what has become a national outpour-

ing of anger at Erdogan’s authoritarian style and Islamist inclinations, during which two have been killed and thousands injured, drawing alarm from Turkey’s Western allies in NATO at his response to

the worst riots in decades. Shops were shuttered on a main avenue leading to Taksim Square, as thousands of demonstrators chanting anti-government slogans marched by for a fifth day. Barricades of rubble blocked other streets leading to the square and the acrid smell of tear gas hung in the air. The protests have included a broad spectrum of people opposed to Erdogan, some accusing him of an Islamist agenda that seeks to erode the secular foundations of the republic founded by Mustafa

Kemal Ataturk 90 years ago, others opposed more broadly to what they say is his autocratic style. Labor unions joined yesterday’s demonstrations, adding to pressure on the government to acknowledge the grievances of a part of the population, even while it defends its actions as having the support of the majority who elected it. “We are protesting the dictatorial nature of this government, which is against secular people,” said one among more than a dozen lawyers dressed in formal black court robes, heading a procession of public sector workers. “We are here to protect the legacy of Ataturk and the Turkish state, which is the state we work for.” Behind them, a group of actors from a state theater carried banners showing an opera mask weeping a blood-red tear, flanked by union representatives in baseball caps and members of the Turkish communist party. On parenting during an alien invasion to raising kids today.

Interview. Noah Wyle talks about the dierences between “E.R.â€? and his new show, “Falling Skies.â€? With the third season of “Falling Skiesâ€? hitting television this week, star Noah Wyle is remarkably candid about the hit sci-fi series’ strengths and weaknesses. “I don’t think there’s anybody involved with this show that’s more objective about it than I am, that is willing to point out its faults as well as its assets,â€? says the former star of “E.R.â€? He also says he’s learned a lot of lessons about parenting during an alien invasion that, strangely enough, can be applied surprisingly well

After three seasons, do you think “Falling Skies has found its footing? This is a weird show in that I still don’t feel like we’ve reached our full potential, because every year we do something that kind of hobbles us. And yet they turn out pretty well. I’d be really curious to see what we’d be able to accomplish if we didn’t stand in our own way so much. How do you mean? Everything from scheduling to how much time we get scripts beforehand to casting. Maybe I’m spoiled, because by the time “E.R. was off the air it was such a welloiled machine that it just ran so smoothly. But for example, last season they wrote this wonderful role for a guest star, for a

The breakdowns didn’t go out until a week or 10 days before the episode started shooting, so you have one shot, basically, and if they say no then you’re scrambling. And if you scramble too much, then you’re going to run into a visa issue bringing in an American actor to Canada. And as a result, you cast locally and a part that could’ve

been really great, you end up whittling down to very little on the show, which is an unfortunate side effect. Your character’s had three sons throughout all of “Falling Skies, and now there’s a new addition. What have you learned about parenting during an alien apocalypse? Repertory roundup Repping it. A new print of Andrei Tarkovsky’s secondto-last ďŹ lm is playing at BAM, while Film Forum does Ozu. For a filmmaker synonymous with glacial pacing, Andrei Tarkovsky is relentlessly popular. Few saw the faithfully sluggish remake of his “Solaris,â€? not even with George Clooney in the lead. But his films — not just “Solaris,â€? but “Andrei Rublevâ€? and “Stalkerâ€? — are reliable repertory draws, packing houses with those willing to sit rapt for long, ponderous takes and mull over their naked philosophizing. A new 35mm print of 1983’s “Nostalghia,â€? the Russian filmmaker’s sixth

After “The Mirror, it’s Tarkovsky’s most difficult piece: It’s largely plotless, and it saves its two most galvanizing set pieces for the end. The plot (if you will) concerns a brooding Russian poet named Andrei (Oleg Yankovskiy) who comes to Italy and soon gets caught up in the ravings of a lunatic (Erland Josephson) who thinks modern life is rubbish. The actions mirror the film’s making. Tarkovsky, too, had come to Italy from Russia, where filmmaking had, finally, become difficult. He brought Russia with him. He’s possibly the only director to make Italy look miserable: It’s a film of decaying, disused old buildings, with water leaking through roofs or running through its floors.

There’s a powerful sense of place, at once vivid and dreamlike, that triumphs over narrative. The critic J. Hoberman said it was “not so much a movie as a place to inhabit for two hours. At times Tarkovsky seems to be referencing himself, even mocking his reputation. The climax, involves the carrying of a candle across a room — a scene that could be read as a joke against his detractors if it wasn’t unexpect-

JOSS WHEDON The director and TV legend talks about going from “The Avengers to the Bard.

THE FILM’S THE THING GETTY IMAGES

Joss Whedon admits that when he told some people about his long-held desire to make a film version of one of Shakespeare’s plays, there was a fair amount of head-scratching. For his rapidly produced labor of love — filmed over 12 days at the director’s home just after he’d wrapped “The Avengers — Whedon went with the comedy “Much Ado About Nothing, discovering quickly that it wasn’t all a laughing matter. How long have you been

sitting on this one? I’ve wanted to do something like this for decades — God, it’s sad that I’m so old I can say that. I’d always thought this would be the one to shoot. But I never had a take on it. I never felt like I had something to say about the text. And then at some point right at the end of “The Avengers, that changed. It sort of opened itself to me and I went, “Oh wait a minute. I know exactly what I have to say about this and how I would want to make this. I had a week

of vacation coming up, and I was like, “OK. What was that one thing? I gave myself up to the darkness of the piece. There’s a huge amount of deception and drama, and the stakes are actually

pretty dire for a lot of the characters. At the same time, there’s absurdly broad comedy. Looking at it as a whole and realizing how much of it is invested in all of the characters and unlocking the motivations of even the smaller

characters, it started to make sense. A lot of it was kind of unlovely — the idea of two people who are tricked into being in love, two people who are tricked into not being in love. And almost as importantly, it all takes place in one place. Why did you decide to shoot in black and white? Part of it was to give it almost a ’60s feel. We referred to [character] Leonato’s estate as the Kennedy Compound — everybody was drunk the

entire time. Some of the decision-making in this play could only be attributed to being very drunk. So we wanted to give a bit of an old-fashioned feel. It also meant that we could shoot after it got dark with artificial light and not worry about it looking different. But at the very beginning, it just came from the fact that my take on it was very noir. It was a noir comedy.

Going into the gray zone Interview. Brit Marling talks about not seeking easy answers with her eco-thriller “The East.” Brit Marling gets inside the mind of a covert operative in “The East” as both a co-writer (with director Zal Batmanglij) and an actress. She plays Sarah, a freelance agent tasked by a private intelligence firm to infiltrate a group of anarchist activists targeting environment-harming corporations. It was quite a task on both counts, she found, sparking some questions that still go unanswered. In the film, your character asks herself, “Who does this kind of work?” Have you found an answer to that yet? I’m honestly still trying to figure that out. It’s

Patricia Clarkson is such a charismatic, alluring, intelligent actress, and we felt like it was important that the CEO be as charismatic and compelling as the leader of … well, there are no leaders in an anarchist group, but Benji [Alexander Skarsgard] is certainly your charismatic figure. And so it was important that there be a sort of equal balance in the attraction and the allure. I think all of the territory that the film is exploring is a lot of moral gray [area] and complexity, and there are no easy answers. Even in the anarchist group, they’re fighting about how far is too far.

Outer borough who? Real estate. Brooklyn’s climbing prices make it nearly as expensive as Manhattan. Manhattan brokers Ari Harkov and Warner Lewis recently searched for apartments in the West Village for a client, who wanted to pay around $650,000 for a one-bedroom. Not satisfied by the results, they expanded the search to Brooklyn Heights, thinking that would yield much more space for the money. They were wrong. Brooklyn hasn’t offered up the massive discount their client was hoping for, said Lewis. These days, “it’s not a dramatic difference” in price between one-bedrooms in the West Village and comparable units in Brooklyn Heights, he added. In fact, the median asking price for a Brooklyn Heights unit has risen 37.8 percent in the past five years to $792,500, according to StreetEasy. By contrast, the median price in the West Village rose only 4.34 percent during that same period, to $895,000. Manhattan or Brooklyn: The choice used to be an easy one. Those who could afford it chose “the city,” not the dowdy stepsister across the river, with its longer commutes and cheaper home prices. Today, though, Brooklyn is the top pick of more and more harried urbanites, and the proof is in the numbers. With sale prices

and rents rising in Brooklyn, brokers said, many home-seekers find that popular neighborhoods no longer come at the discount they’re expecting. “When I get a call from a buyer looking for a place in Brooklyn and they say, ‘I want to move there because I want more space for my money,’ I don’t beat around the bush,” said

Lindsay Barton Barrett, a broker from the Corcoran Group. “I immediately tell them they’re going to be disappointed.” This month, we analyzed market data to find out how prices in prime Brooklyn neighborhoods compare to their Manhattan counterparts. The data show that rents have been rising much faster in Brooklyn than in Manhattan, significantly narrowing the pricing gap between the two boroughs. In March, the median rental price for a one-bedroom in prime Brooklyn neighborhoods was $2,560, an 11.3 percent jump from the same month of last year, according to a recent market report from the brokerage Prudential Douglas Elliman. By contrast, the median rental price for Manhattan was $3,195, an increase of 6.7 percent. When it comes to sales, many Brooklyn neighbor-

hoods are still cheaper than Manhattan, but the difference is smaller than it used to be. In the first quarter, the median sales price for a Brooklyn apartment shot up 14 percent to $515,000 year-over-year, Elliman’s data shows, while the median price in Man-

hattan rose just 5.9 percent to $820,555. There is one area where prime Brooklyn neighborhoods represent a dramatic discount from Manhattan, however: the very high end. “Your money is going further if you’re buying a townhouse or a large apart-

ment in Brooklyn,” said Barrett, who is handling sales at the new condo 123 Fort Greene Place, where prices start at $749,000 for a one-bedroom. “But if you’re looking for a twobedroom apartment, the prices are much more similar.” It’s no secret that Brooklyn prices have been on the rise, as the borough’s idyllic brownstones increasingly lure buyers out of Manhattan. “Now you find that people are more open to both boroughs, not all of both boroughs but [certain areas],” said Terry Naini, a Town Residential broker. “It’s like those neighborhoods are an extension of Manhattan.” KATHERINE CLARKE TheRealDeal.com is a daily blog and monthly magazine covering real estate in the New York metro area.

Moving out to the ’Burg Manhattanites may be able to find more of a discount in Williamsburg, which was hard hit by the real estate downturn. “The timing of all the waterfront towers going up sort of coincided with [the collapse of] Lehman,” Harkov said. Williamsburg, he added, “was the Miami of New York.” The median asking price for an apartment in

Williamsburg has actually declined by 2.2 percent to $585,493 over the past five years, StreetEasy data shows. Still, the East Village has seen its median asking price drop 18.8 percent to $667,500 during the past five years, according to StreetEasy, putting it more in the range of Williamsburg prices. All those new waterfront towers mean sale prices in Williamsburg are now

even higher than on the Lower East Side. Over the past five years, prices on the Lower East Side fell 3.9 percent to $490,000, less than Williamsburg’s current median of $585,493. Rentals on the Lower East Side are still slightly more expensive than in Williamsburg, however. The average monthly rent for a one-bedroom apartment on the Lower East Side in March was $3,111, compared with $2,927 in Williamsburg.

Poconos Pennsylvania Builder -90 mins. from NYC!

‘The iPad of vacuum Whatever your cleaners’: AirRam

budget, Classic will get you a home! for as little as $ 99,000 Complete!

In addition to its world-famous line of new homes, like the Millburn shown below, Classic Quality homes is proud to announce an entirely new offering of used homes, priced from an amazing $99,000. These are quality offerings, all completely reconditioned and fully warranteed by Classic, the Pocono’s most trusted builder. These beautiful homes, in some of the area’s most desirable communities, can be purchased for as little as $3,500 down and as low as $1,100 per month. Call us now for complete details on these used homes as well as Classic’s all new line.

Household. Gtech introduces a cordless, batterypowered model for your home. Forget unpacking a heavy vacuum, unwinding the cord and plugging it in the next time you spill a few measly chips or need to get the cat hair off your couch. Gtech’s new vacuum is determined to make your life easier. “Floor care has to go cordless — the vacuum is the only product we drag around room-to-room with a cable,” says Nick Grey, founder of the British design firm and inventor of the new device. His solution is the AirRam, a sleek lightweight unit that runs on a rechargeable Lithium Ion batter that lasts up to 40 minutes and “is powerful enough to clean a fourbedroom home.”

Impressive, but it gets better. The AirRam is 20 times more energy-efficient than most vacuums. And it can be hooked up to your computer via a USB cable to find out information like how many calories you’ve burned during the chore and how much power you’ve saved. “We try and make the product very smart,” says Grey. “It’s a bit ambitious to [call it] the iPad of vacuum cleaners, but it’s got one button. And you press your button, and whatever you push [it] over, it will clean well. It’s very simple.” Since vacuuming isn’t our favorite household activity we asked Grey some essentials: How often should people vacuum? “It’s not necessary to clean more than once a week unless you’ve got a really busy home.” What are the benefits of vacuuming,

$349, WWW.BROOKSTONE.COM

not sweeping? “Sweeping, if you’ve got mostly hard floors, is very convenient. You’d better have a pretty good vacuum to beat [a broom] on hard floors. The advantage to using a vacuum is there’s less airborne dirt; it all goes in and is contained. There are also no bristles, which can get dirty. The dust won’t blow up in the air, it will get sucked up inside.”

TINA CHADHA

tina.chadha@metro.us

Saving power

Why it’s so energyefficient The AirRam uses just 100 watts of power. “[That’s] about a 10th of what your normal corded uprights use,” says Grey. He says this is due to its short dirt path. Instead of shooting dirt up into a bag or canister, the vacuum collects dirt and dust into compact “bales” that you then empty into your trash can.

So why let your lack of outdoor space stop you from enjoying sweet pleasures such as fixing dinner with sprigs of basil from your own window box? Annie Novak, urban farmer extraordinaire — she’s the co-founder and farmer of Eagle Street Rooftop Farm, a 6,000-square- foot organic vegetable farm in Greenpoint — shows us how to get started. More from Novak

“The privilege and power of growing your own food is you get to be the person who keeps amazing heirloom seeds out in the world, says Novak. / PROVIDED

First you need

The three essentials

1

SUNNY SPOT: “Regardless of your space, it’s light that plants need to grow,” says Novak. “That’s how they make food.”

2

DEEP POT: “For balcony gardening, the first thing that people need to know is that plants ideally live in about 18-inch-deep soil,” says Novak. “So you don’t want to grow stuff in a yogurt container. You want to get a proper pot. The shallower the vessel the more

evaporation and moisture loss in the soil, and the more stressed out the plants roots will be.”

3

GOOD DIRT: “Buy a potting soil that has a compost blend in it,” says Novak. “I

do not recommend chemical fertilizers in your potting soil for the very simple reason that it’s like having a cup of coffee — it gives you an energy boost for a minute and then after that you crash.” Novak says key words to look for when buying your soil are: “compost, humus and any product that comes from the ocean.” She says, “A lot of bags will say, ‘has seaweed in it’ or ‘enriched with lobster meal.’ Almost any of those are going to be really good fertilizers that are added naturally to your soil.”

Tips

Start with seeds “One of the best reasons to grow your own food is so you can grow a purple carrot instead of an orange carrot,” says Novak. “I like to grow things from seeds because when you buy the seed package you’re choosing from a much larger range of varieties, like 13 kinds of mint, which is exciting. In the food we eat we’re losing so much diversity, and it sounds cheesy, but the privilege and power of growing your own food is you get to be the person

25

who keeps these amazing heirloom seeds out in the world.”

Be responsible “If you have a terrace or a balcony, make sure that anything you put out there is heavy enough so that it will never fall off,” says Novak. “With a rooftop, it’s the same thing: You need to have safe access, a parapet that’s the right height and then containers that are big enough that they

won’t blow off the roof.”

Tomato fever “If you are fixated on tomatoes, start with cherry tomatoes,” she says. “There’s one variety called sun gold. It’s a beautiful tomato, it’s one of my favorites for gardening with kids.”

Once we have our sunny spot, good soil and a deep pot, what are some easy vegetables to start off with? “Tomatoes are not! I find it fascinating that people always plant tomatoes because tomatoes are actually more prone to bad care,” Novak says. “If you’re a first-time gardener it’s not an easy crop to take care of. I hear so many complaints from people who are like, ‘My tomatoes never make tomatoes!’ And I say, ‘Yeah, well, there are nine things going against you.’ This is the logical way to think about it: The first thing all plants do is grow a root, and then they grow two leaves, and then after that they start growing more leaves. And once they have enough leaves and sunshine, then they’re like, ‘OK, we’re set with our sugar,

Find. Eat. Drink. Systems: iOS Price: Free Genre: Dining, boozing

Yelpers can be terrible: Uninformed, shortsighted, obsessed with how they’re treated over how they’re fed. The digital world doesn’t need another restaurant app — or maybe not just one run on the word of everyday patrons. Enter Find. Eat. Drink., which is fueled by those in the know — chefs, bartenders, sommeliers. Wondering where Annisa’s Anita Lo or Le Bernardin’s Eric Ripert eat in New York? Or where Jose

Garces gets his dim sum in Philadelphia? Or which restaurant lifers go to the Lower East Side’s Mission Chinese once a week? FED is already running in cities all over the United States, as well as in parts of France and Spain. Its list of informers is a nice mix of the obscure and the world famous. (They’ve yet to recruit Mario Batali, although he pipes up about food and drink enough already.) Of course, you still have to take recommendations with a grain of salt (sorry). Restaurateurs aren’t always the most objective when it comes to talking about friends (albeit talented ones). And they aren’t always the most eloquent writers. Sometimes you’re just stuck with Marcus Samuelsson saying, of Little Italy’s Banh Mi Saigon, “I love their banh mi sandwiches — although that’s probably all that needs to be said. There’s a scene in the almost certainly forgotten film of Michael Crichton’s “Rising Sun — that’s the one where Sean Connery and Wesley Snipes stoke then-fears about Japanese businessmen taking over America — where a techie takes a video of Connery and Snipes and swaps their faces. Magic! And because this is the future, anyone with a spare $2 can do almost the same thing on their phone.

With iSwap Faces, users can take a photo and easily move one face over to another. It’s not a sloppy, unsightly app, either: The juxtaposition is scarily smooth, thanks to the ability to customize the size of each face, and then fine tune it so that friends, family or strangers look like horrific freaks. A fine timesuck will get even better once people start applying it to historical photos of famous people. Forget embarrassing your friends — just wait until someone puts Joe DiMaggio’s face on Marilyn Monroe’s body, and vice versa. Grade: Amusing

New camera sensor eliminates need for ash No flash? No problem. A new imaging sensor could soon make it possible for photographers to take clear, sharp photos, even in dim lighting. Created by a team of researchers at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore, the new sensor is highly sensitive to both visible and infrared light, which means it could be used in everything from the family Nikon to surveillance and satellite cameras.

The inventor of the new sensor, Wang Qijie, an assistant professor at NTU, said the key to his new sensor is the use of “light-trapping. The nanostructures hold on to light-generated electron particles for much longer than conventional sensors. This results in a stronger than usual electric signal, which can be processed into an image, like a photograph captured by a digital camera. Most of today’s camera sensors use a complementary metaloxide semiconductor as a base. But Wang said that his graphene base is far more effective, producing clearer, sharper photos. If the industry chooses to adopt his design, Wang said it could lead to cheaper, lighter cameras with longer battery lives for all.

What you should really know about GMOs Health. It’s a controversial topic. Here are the facts. It’s hard to get 91 percent of Americans to agree on anything, but one thing 91 percent of us do agree on is that genetically modified foods should be labeled. Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are crops made with DNA from foreign species — think taking DNA from an eel and inserting it into salmon to make it larger (which, by the way, is a reality today). Genetically engineered crops have been in the U.S. since the mid-1990s, says Britt Lundgren, the director of Organic & Sustainable Agriculture at Stonyfield Farm, Inc., which is behind the Just Label It movement to create a label similar to the organic label for GMOs. What started as a means of enhancing crops like cotton and canola in the U.S. is now the way the majority of some crops are

More than 60 countries require labeling for GMOs, according to Just Label It. / DIGITAL VISION

produced. For example, 93 percent of the soy that we grow now is a GMO, as is 90 percent of our corn. “We’re heavily investing in this without letting folks know that this is a part of their diets,” Lundgren says. Though the FDA argues that genetically modified products are safe to eat, others beg to differ. Bt toxin, an insecticide in some GMO corn, has shown up in the blood of 93 percent

Labels

Don’t want ’em? Sign the petition The Just Label It petition launched in 2011 to push the FDA to identify GMOs like they already do organic products. Since its creation, over

1 million Americans have signed the petition letter urging leaders to make a change. You can learn more about why celebs like Michael J. Fox and Chevy Chase are involved in the cause, and sign the petition yourself, at www. justlabelit.org.

of pregnant women and 80 percent of their fetuses, according to GMO-Free NY. But some scientists say the process isn’t so radical. “Genetic engineering is not all that different from conventional plant breeding,” says Dr. Walter De Jong, an associate professor of plant breeding and genetics at Cornell University. He says that when crops are conventionally bred, they undergo a great deal of change anyway: “In terms of the scale of what’s happened, the amount of change that we’ve introduced is quite small.” And in terms of health risks, he says that “the concerns are almost for the most part not supported by mainstream science.” Some retailers are starting to take action against GMOs. Whole Foods recently announced that by 2018 they will require labeling for all foods in their stores. And Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s and Wegmans have agreed to not carry the aforementioned genetically engineered salmon.

How to spot a GMO •

Check the label. “The organic regulations prohibit the use of GMOs, so anything with an organic label will have been produced without GMOs,” Lundgren says.

Check the number. Is your produce’s sticker a five-digit number starting with eight? It’s a GMO. Four-digit numbers mean a product was conventionally made. Five-digit numbers beginning with nine mean it’s organic.

Check the logo. Look for a little butterfly symbol on packaged foods — it’s the mark of the Non-GMO Project, a third-party verification system.

MLB seeks to suspend A-Rod for PED links Managing general partner Hal Steinbrenner conceded on Monday that at times Alex Rodriguez has disappointed the Yankees. Now, Steinbrenner may have a new reason to be disappointed with Rodriguez, who is currently rehabbing a second hip injury in Tampa, Fla. During the early innings of last night’s Yankees game with Cleveland, ESPN’s T.J. Quinn broke the news that MLB will seek a 100-game suspension for Rodriguez’s second performanceenhancing drugs (PED) offense in connection with the league’s investigation of the Biogensis clinic in Miami. According to the ESPN story, Anthony Bosch, the doctor who ran the clinic, is expected to give sworn testimony to MLB investigators.

Giambi has eyes on future manager job MLB. The former Yankee is back in town with the Indians and talking post-baseball life.

Jason Giambi has always had a loose, fun-loving personality, including during the seven seasons he spent with the Yankees. If he becomes a manager after retiring from a playing career that began 18 years ago with Oakland, there’s a good chance that the team he manages will have the same characteristics in the clubhouse. “We’d have fun,” Giambi said. “We’d have a loose clubhouse. I know there’s enough pressure, and I’ve had some incredible managers in Joe Torre, Tito [Terry Francona] and Tony La Russa. I played for some greats of the game, so I understand the style and that kind of stuff.” Giambi is so highly regarded by many that Francona, his current manager, says even he’s leaned on him at times. “I have never been around somebody like

Nunez setback The Yankees said Eduardo Nunez tried to swing a bat in Tampa, Fla., yesterday as part of his ongoing rehab from a left oblique strain, but he couldn’t quite do it. •

“We thought that he was ready to go again … he took swings today, and

I guess he’s not ready to go again,” Girardi said. “He did a bunch of drills the other day and said, ‘I feel great, let’s try it.’ It didn’t work.” •

He wil undergo an MRI and rest the strain for now.

Cardinals (38-19) The Cardinals are still the best in baseball after a 5-2 week. With two road wins, the Cardinals improved their leagueleading 20-9 road record — a major reason for their success. They’ll be tested this week with a four-game set against Arizona and then three games at Cincinnati.

No. 2

Rangers (35-21)

Reds (36-22)

Despite a .500 record this past week, the Rangers still remain second in our rankings, and the best team in the American League. Their lead in the AL West has been narrowed under two games.

Taking two-of-three from the Pirates over the weekend moved the Reds into a tie with Pittsburgh for second in the NL Central. These wins came on the road, but hey’re back in Cincy this week.

No. 6 Pirates (35-23) — If they were in the NL West, they’d be in first by 2 1/2 games.

No. 7 Athletics (35-24) — The A’s went 6-1 last week and won 9-of-10 going back further.

No. 8 Orioles (32-25) — The O’s are rolling with a 7-3 record over the last 10 games.

No. 9 Yankees (32-25) — The Yankees have lost seven of their last nine games.

No. 10 Diamondbacks (32-25) — A 4-2 week put Arizona at the top of the NL West.

No. 5

Braves (35-22)

Red Sox (35-23)

Even with only a 4-3 record last week, the Braves jumped out to a 6 1/2-game lead in the NL East. Through Sunday, Braves pitching had allowed three runs or less in their last five games.

A 4-3 week, including taking two-of-three from the Yankees, pushed the Sox back into first in the AL East. It appears the pitching is getting back on track with an average of 2.43 runs per game this week.

Pierre-Paul could miss season debut NFL. The Giants defensive end will be out three months after undergoing back surgery yesterday. The Giants may have finally given fans a reason why Jason Pierre-Paul struggled in 2012. Now, they just hope it won’t run into next season. The Giants confirmed yesterday that Pierre-Paul underwent surgery on his back in Los Angeles. The team put the timetable for recovery at three months, which would mean an early September return. The Giants open the regular season Sept. 8 against Dallas. “My back has been bothering me for a while, and even last season, I played through some back issues,” Pierre-Paul said in a statement. “The treatment I’ve been doing has helped

Jason Pierre-Paul had surgery to fix a herniated disc in his back. / GETTY IMAGES

manage the issue, but this procedure is going to get me fully healthy, and there should be no more pain.” The team said he underwent a successful microdiscetomy, which is done to correct a herniated disc. Pierre-Paul had just 6.5

sacks last season after exploding on the national scene in 2011 with 16.5 sacks. The 24-year-old firstround pick was considered a raw talent entering the league, and his breakout 2011 season was seen as a sign of huge things to come.

But there were few answers to his struggles in 2012. He didn’t have a sack in the final seven games of the season. ESPN reported PierrePaul played through the injury last season and received multiple epidural shots to numb the pain. Pierre-Paul sat out organized team activities last week with what head coach Tom Coughlin said was an excused absence. Coughlin was “aware of both circumstances there” in respect to the absences of Pierre-Paul and fellow defensive end Justin Tuck. The Giants were counting on Pierre-Paul even more this upcoming season after the departure of Osi Umenyiora to Atlanta. Umenyiora was a free agent, and one of the reasons the team barely debated bringing him back was due to the emergence of Pierre-Paul.

Belmont. Draw to be held today as Oxbow, Orb angle for victory There will be no Triple Crown on the line Saturday, but horse racing fans will get a grudge match between Orb and Oxbow. Orb, the winner of this year’s Kentucky Derby, and Oxbow, winner of the Preakness Stakes, are the leading two candidates in the 15-horse field. The draw will be held today at 10 a.m. Orb finished fourth in the Preakness and never really threatened Oxbow, a 15/1 underdog, in the race. Oxbow finished a respectable sixth in the Derby. If anyone is going to challenge the two previous Triple Crown event winners, he will likely come from trainer Todd Pletcher. Pletcher is fielding five horses in the race, including Palace Malice and Revolutionary, both of whom ran in the Derby and then sat out the Preakness. Revolutionary finished third in the Derby

after winning the Grade 2 Louisiana Derby in late March. Pletcher will also field the only filly in the race, Unlimited Budget, rode by the only female jockey in the race, Rosie Napravnik. The 145th running of the Belmont Stakes in Elmont, N.Y., will break out of the gates at about 6:30 p.m. on Saturday. METRO
