Yeshiva students kicked off plane About 100 Brooklyn yeshiva students are accusing AirTran of religious bias after they were booted off a plane at LaGuardia Airport. Flight attendants and eventually the captain reportedly lost patience with the students for ignoring repeated requests to sit down and turn off their cell phones. The flight to Atlanta was delayed for 45 minutes as the students were asked to exit the plane and placed on other flights. EMILY JOHNSON

Victims of Sandy still struggling Suffering. Health officials say emotional recovery from the trauma of the storm can take years. Seven months after Hurricane Sandy destroyed the first floor of her Hamilton Beach home, Jean Ferrara-Rodriquez is still rebuilding her life. The downstairs plumbing needs work, mold in the hallway has to be retreated and she’s still waiting for some FEMA checks. “You worry about one thing and another comes up,” said FerraraRodriquez. Ferrara-Rodriquez, 51, is not alone. The health department said nearly one-third of adults living in the areas hardest-hit by Sandy reported experiencing psychological distress six weeks after the storm. “When property is destroyed or lost and you cannot get back to your normal environment, it takes much longer to recover from trauma because people have to adjust,” said Paula Ma-

drid, a psychologist with the National Center for Disaster Preparedness at Columbia University. The city health department is urging storm victims to call a helpline in a summer campaign advertising free crisis counseling services through Project Hope, a state initiative funded by FEMA. Ferrara-Rodriquez has been attending Project Hope group sessions at the Howard Beach Senior Center since April. She draws comfort from meetings with other storm victims. “You got to be in it to really know what it’s like,” she said. New Yorkers exhibited psychological reactions to the storm in roughly

Help Health officials hope Sandy victims in emotional turmoil will take advantage of Project Hope’s services. •

Since November, hundreds of counselors with Project Hope have already helped 108,000 New Yorkers, going door-to-door in stormravaged neighborhoods.

half of Project Hope crisis counseling sessions since November, according to the health department. Most felt sad, tearful, anxious, fearful, irritable or angry. Children are especially vulnerable to these symptoms, Madrid said. “There are a lot of children who are fearful about the summer — these children haven’t had any of these fears before Sandy,” Madrid said, noting the increase in storms during hotter months. Though Ferrara-Rodriquez’s daughter Jean Marie, 13, doesn’t appear to be afraid of future hurricanes, she was stranded with her mother for several hours at a flooded motel when the storm hit last October. Such traumatic experiences have a greater impact on children and the stress can manifest in different ways, Madrid said. But recovery — for both adults and children — after a disaster like Sandy can take years. “Recovery only begins when people feel they are safe,” she said.

Poll. A survey found New Yorkers are disappointed in how the Assembly Speaker dealt with Vito Lopez. Half of New York voters want Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver to resign because of the way he handled sexual harassment allegations against former Assemblyman Vito Lopez, according to a new Quinnipiac University poll. “A lot of voters say get rid of the pack of them; there should be a legislative house-cleaning,” said Quinnipiac University Polling Institute director Maurice Carroll. An ethics report last month stated that Lopez harassed at least eight female staffers after Silver approved a $100,000 settlement with two women who accused Lopez of sexual harassment. The report revealed that Silver’s office failed to refer the allegations to an ethics committee. The poll also found that 58 percent of New York State voters would not want their daughWinning

Casualties mount in Philadelphia building collapse Rescue. Crews worked overnight to free victims, said Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers. A 35-year-old woman was confirmed killed and 13 people were injured in a building collapse in downtown Philadelphia yesterday. Reports last night said at least two more bodies were recovered, but that information could not be confirmed by press time. Rescue workers pulled

people from mountains of crushed concrete and splintered wood, using search dogs to scour the rubble for others, fire officials said. A four-story building under demolition collapsed onto a neighboring twostory Salvation Army Thrift Store at 2140 Market Street at 10:45 a.m., trapping people under debris, Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers said. Those pulled from the rubble suffered minor injuries and were taken to area hospitals where they were in stable condition, he said. One witness, Dan Gillis, 31, of Cinnaminson, N.J., a construction worker on a job across the street, said

he saw a crane remove a supporting beam from the front of the building, and then the wall started swaying. Another witness, Jeffrey Fehnel, 48, of Philadelphia, said about the same time a backhoe hit the rear side of the building. “The building came down. It was like a big blast, Fehnel told Reuters. Carlton Williams, commissioner of the Department of Licenses and Inspections for Philadelphia, said the site had all the permits needed for demolition. Officials said the cause was still under investigation. METRO, REUTERS

Who Gets Free TV: Listed below are the NYC area zip codes that can get Free over the air TV channels. If you find the first two digits of your zip code immediately call: 1-888-752-7147 NEW YORK - Today’s announcement by CompTek has the Free TV Hotlines ringing off the hook. That’s because NYC area residents who find their zip code listed in today’s publication are getting Free TV channels thanks to an amazing razor-thin invention called Clear-Cast®. NYC area residents who call the Toll Free Hotlines before the 48-hour order deadline to get Clear-Cast can pull in Free TV channels with crystal clear digital picture and no monthly bills . This announcement is being so widely advertised because a U.S. Federal law makes TV broadcasters transmit their signals in digital format, which allows everyone to receive these over-the-air digital signals for free with no monthly bills. Here’s how it works. Clear-Cast, the sleek micro antenna device with advanced technology links up directly to pull in the Free TV signals being broadcast in your area with crystal clear digital picture and no monthly bills. Clear-Cast was invented by a renowned NASA Space Technology Hall of Fame scientist who currently holds 23 U.S. Gov’t issued patents. For the past 20 years, he has specialized in developing antenna systems for NASA, Motorola, XM Satellite Radio and companies around the world. His latest patent-pending invention, Clear-Cast, is a sleek micro antenna device engineered to pull in the Free TV signals through advanced technology with no cable, satellite or internet connection and no monthly bills. “Clear-Cast is being released to the general public because we just don’t think people should keep paying for TV when they can get it for free,” said Conrad Miller, Manager of Operations at CompTek. “There’s never a monthly bill to pay and all the channels you get with Clear-Cast are absolutely free. So you see, Clear-Cast is not like cable or satellite. It was engineered to access solely the overthe-air signals that include all the top rated national and regional networks, like ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, PBS, CW and about 90% of the most watched TV shows like America’s Got Talent, NCIS, 60 Minutes, American Idol, The Big Bang Theory, The Bachelorette, Person of Interest, CSI, The Mentalist, Two and a Half Men, Sunday Night Football plus news, weather and more all for free with no monthly bills,” Miller said. “That’s why Clear-Cast is such a great alternative for everyone who is sick and tired of paying expensive cable and satellite bills every month,” he said. “People who get Clear-Cast will say it feels like getting an extra paycheck every month. You see, with Clear-Cast you’ll receive free over-the-air broadcast channels with crystal clear digital picture, not the cable or satellite only channels. So being able to eliminate those channels puts all the money you were spending back in your pocket every month,” Miller said. And here’s the best part. The sleek micro antenna device called Clear-Cast is so technically advanced it pulls in even more of the channels being broadcast in your area for Free with no monthly bills. That way you can channel surf through the favorite TV shows. The number of shows and channels you’ll get depends on where you live. People living in large metropolitan areas may get up to 53 static-

free channels, while people in outlying areas will get less. That means even if you’re in a rural area that just pulls in NBC, ABC, CBS, FOX and PBS broadcasts there’s hundreds of shows each year to watch for free. Consumers report that the crystal clear picture quality with Clear-Cast is the best they’ve ever seen. That’s because you get virtually all pure uncompressed signals direct from the broadcasters for free. Clear-Cast was engineered to link up directly like a huge outdoor directional antenna but in a lightweight, slim-line package. Its sturdy copper alloy and polymer construction will most likely far outlast your TV. It just couldn’t be any easier to get Free over-theair digital TV shows with Clear-Cast. Simply plug it into your TV, place Clear-Cast on a window pane and run autoscan. It works on virtually any model TV and is easily hidden out of sight behind a curtain or window treatment. Thousands of NYC area residents are expected to call to get Clear-Cast because it just doesn’t make any sense to keep paying for TV when you can get hundreds of shows absolutely free. So, NYC area residents lucky enough to find their zip code listed in today’s publication need to immediately call the Free TV Hotline before the 48-hour deadline to get Clear-Cast that pulls in Free TV with crystal clear digital picture. If lines are busy keep trying, all calls will be answered. N

N NEVER PAY A BILL AGAIN: New Yorkers will be on the lookout for their postal carrier because thousands of Clear-Casts will soon be delivered to lucky NYC area residents who beat the 48-hour order deadline and live in any of the zip code areas listed below. Everyone is getting Clear-Cast because it pulls in nothing but Free TV channels with no cable, satellite or internet connection and no monthly bills.

How to get Free TV: Listed below are the NYC area zip codes that can get Free TV channels with no monthly bills. If you find the first two digits of your zip code immediately call 1-888-752-7147 beginning at precisely 8:30am this morning. Today’s announcement photo above shows just a handful of the major over-the-air broadcast networks you can receive with Clear-Cast for free. This is all possible because a U.S. Federal Law makes TV broadcasters transmit their signals in digital format, which allows everyone to use Clear-Cast to pull in Free TV channels with no monthly bills. CompTek is giving every U.S. household a 50% off discount to help cover the cost of Clear-Cast. Farmer Ernest Barnes, who grows wheat in Morton County in the southwest corner of Kansas, filed suit this week in U.S. District Court in Wichita, Kan., alleging that he and other wheat farmers have been hurt financially by

the discovery of the unapproved biotech wheat that Monsanto said it stopped testing and shelved nine years ago. “Monsanto has released GE (genetically engineered) wheat into the non-genetically modified wheat population, the petition states. The “plaintiff has been harmed by any and all Monsanto GE wheat because it has impacted wheat exports and the price of wheat, the petition also states. REUTERS Quoted

Confidante. Obama picks Rice as his new security adviser President Barack Obama chose close confidante Susan Rice as his new national security adviser yesterday, increasing White House control over foreign policy and defying Republican criticism of her handling of last year’s deadly attack on a U.S. compound in Libya. The hard-charging Rice, selected to replace low-key Tom Donilon in the post, is expected to play a high-profile role in defending Obama’s foreign policy, particularly on the civil war in Syria. Obama has come under fire for his cautious approach in response to mounting evidence that President Bashar al-Assad used chemical weapons against rebels seeking to oust him. Obama will nominate Samantha Power — a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, former White House aide and Harvard

US says Iran’s nuke plans ‘deeply troubling’

Senior Republican pushes tougher border plan for immigration bill The second-ranking Senate Republican yesterday unveiled a proposal to signiďŹ cantly tighten security on the U.S.-Mexico border before giving undocumented workers legal status in the broad immigration bill being considered in the U.S. Senate. The proposal from Sen. John Cornyn of Texas, a skeptic of the bill that would grant legal status to some 11 million undocumented immigrants, would require the Department of Homeland Security to have surveillance over the entire U.S.-Mexico border and meet a benchmark of apprehending at least 90 percent of people trying to cross the border illegally. The United States said yesterday it was “deeply troubled by Iran’s plans to start a reactor in 2014 that could yield nuclear bomb material while failing to give U.N. inspectors necessary design information about the plant. The comments by a U.S. envoy to a board meeting of the U.N.’s International Atomic Energy Agency highlighted deepening Western concern about the heavy water reactor that Iran is building. Iran hit back, saying the IAEA had had continuous access to Arak, and that the U.S., which accuses Tehran of seeking nuclear weapons capability, could not be trusted after going to war in Iraq over reports of weapons of mass destruction that were never found. Kieron Monks eats the Soylent paste. / ANTHONY JOHNSTON,

The power of the paste courses through my veins as I drink. I can feel my vision sharpening, my mind racing and renewed physical strength. This glass of sand-colored sludge holds the power of transformation. That’s the theory behind Soylent, an innovation from U.S. biohacker Rob Rhinehart — the name comes from a 1970s science-fiction movie in which the title substance is made from humans. Rhinehart’s Soylent is less sinister, combining every nutrient the human body needs each day, according to the Food & Drug Adminstration, in a single dose of super-charged paste. The recipe is publicly available and has rapidly secured $500,000 in crowdfunding for mass production, so it’s time for me to play guinea pig. I hunt the health food and fitness stores of central London for the pills, powders and grains that make up a daily intake, while shopkeepers eye me with suspicion. Back at Metro, I blend precise measurements of

each element together to the disgust of my colleagues. The resulting paste barely escapes the glass, as it is so thick — and when it does I regret it, the taste a sickly clash of salty, sweet and alien. But suddenly the vitamins and Ginseng kick, and I can understand Rhinehart’s plan a little better. “I’m not sick of it,” the creator promises. “This is about utility that you can live on. Most people don’t need gourmet meals all the time, most of the time it’s taking care of need.” The San Francisco-based entrepreneur, 25, put himself through a three-month trial subsisting only on Soylent, adjusting the recipe as he went. Not only did Rhinehart survive, he is “measurably healthier.” He says: “I can run farther. I’m not stressed. My favorite part is cognition, I feel sharper and have more mental energy.”

Opening statements in the murder trial of accused Boston gangster James “Whitey” Bulger would be heard on June 12, federal prosecutors said after a court hearing yesterday. A second day of jury selection was underway in U.S. District Court in Boston, with hundreds of jurors asked to fill out questionnaires to find 12 jurors and six alternates. The first two days of jury selection were closed to the public. The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Boston said on its official Twitter feed that opening statements would be heard on June 12. The trial before U.S. District

Judge Denise Casper is expected to draw crowds of spectators because of Bulger’s notoriety. Prosecutors have submitted hundreds of pages of evidence against him. Their main challenge, according to legal observers, will be to avoid technical errors that could lead to a mistrial. Bulger was captured in California in June 2011, where he had lived anonymously in a seaside town. He had evaded authorities despite being listed on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted list for most of his 16 years in hiding. Martin Scorsese’s Academy Award-winning film “The Departed” was loosely based on Bulger.

And so it begins: Paris Jackson’s suicide attempt

1

Being 15 is hard. Being 15 when you don’t have a father, your mother was pretty much bought solely for her uterus, your family legacy is complicated (to say the least) and you are extremely wealthy must be almost unbearable. So I feel for Paris Jackson. The 15-year-old daughter of Michael Jackson was hospitalized early Wednesday

morning in what is being described as a “possible suicide attempt.” Reports flew around the interview that she either suffered from a drug overdose or slit her wrists after being removed via stretcher from the Calabasas, Calif., family house which she shares with her grandmother and guardian Katherine Jackson.

Winslet is pregnant with baby Rocknroll Kate Winslet, who is married to the ridiculouslynamed Ned Rocknroll, has confirmed she is pregnant with baby Rocknroll. “Kate and Ned are delighted” over the news, her rep told the Sun. “Kate and Ned have been talking about having babies since they met. Ned has always wanted kids and has been amazing with Kate’s. They are very family people,” a friend told the newspaper. This is Winslet’s third child (she has two previous children by her two previous husbands: Mia, 12, is the daughter of director Jim Threapleton, and Joe, 9, is the son of director Sam Mendes). So many questions about this. When the fetus moves, does Winslet quip: “Boy, this baby certainly is rocking and rolling!” Should its first name be “Iwanna”? Really, people, I could go on all day.

Craig Robinson is getting plenty of screen time these days after co-starring in “Peeples” last month and teaming up with pals Seth Rogen, James Franco and Jonah Hill for the end-of-theworld comedy “This is the End” next week. And speaking of end times, Robinson leads a cast of improv comedy all-stars as the Antichrist in “RapturePalooza.” Here’s what he remembers most fondly from the 18-day shoot. All improvisation all the time: “I know that there’s another level to it,

The wedding dress whisperer TV. Randy Fenoli is on a mission to make every girl’s dream day a reality.

Legions of brides turn to Fenoli for his advice, and after speaking with him, we’ve come up with some reasons as to why we think that is:

Randy Fenoli of “Say Yes to the Dress” and “Randy to the Rescue” (which just began its second season) estimates that he’s helped about 1 million brides get ready for their big day. But being a bride’s advocate never wears on the marriage maestro: “I never get tired of it,” he tells us. His dedication means that since not everyone can make it to NYC’s Kleinfeld, where Fenoli consults, he takes his show on the road — literally. On “Randy to the Rescue,” Fenoli travels around the U.S., creating popup bridal salons for the betrothed and then giving them makeovers.

He’ll fight for his bride: “I absolutely will not compromise. We were in one city working with a bridal salon and this girl came in. She showed me a picture of this dress that she had tried on, like, six states away, and she fell in love with the dress, but she was like, ‘Well, I can’t get this today.’ You could tell this girl was in love with this dress. And the cameras are on her and the family’s there, and finally she said yes to a dress. But when I walked off the set, I was like, ‘I’m sorry, that is not her dress. She is not happy.’ So I woke up the next morning and called every single bridal salon in, like, a three-hour radius

and found the dress.” He doesn’t believe in bridezillas: “Brides want everything to be perfect, and it should be! ... I would want it to be perfect, too. You’re spending how much money? You’ve waited how many years? You’ve invited how many people, we’re taking how many pictures, and how many people are watching? It should be right.” He goes beyond the dress: “Brides come in and show their consultant a photograph. Most consultants take it literally and are like, ‘OK, that’s the dress you want.’ I don’t just look at the dress. I look at the girl in the dress and I look at the feeling [the picture evokes].”

Know your budget. “You’ve got to have a wedding budget. If you’ve allotted $1,000 for the dress and $1,000 for the flowers and you find a dress that’s $1,200, you’re like OK, what do I do? Maybe you take $200 from your flowers and put it on your dress.”

Go to a reputable salon. “You’re gonna be working with this person to get your dress and to deliver it and alter it and take care of it. You want to be able to have that peace of mind.” Consider your options. “Go in with a wedding

date and a venue. Know what look you’re going for ... but also keep an open mind. So many times, brides come in and say, ‘I don’t want strapless, I don’t want lace and I don’t want beaded,’ and they buy a beaded, lace, strapless dress. I see it every day.”

HOOK ’EM AND HOOK UP (OR JUST BE FRIENDS) Funky Brown Chick

TWANNA A. HINES, M.S. AWARD-WINNING EDUCATOR AND SEX COLUMNIST. FOLLOW HER ON TWITTER @FUNKYBROWNCHICK.

Creepy, desperate stranger isn’t a good look. Whether you are interested in meeting friends or flirting your way to a good relationship, it can be difficult to forge connections with interesting people. Think of it this way: If an unknown person came to your front door and started a conversation with you, you’d wonder, “What do they want? Why are they talking to me?” It’s the same when picking up a stranger. Barging in with little purpose — other than getting into their underwear — can feel awkward or make you look like a jerk. You can do better than that. The propagation of the human race depends on it. Here’s how to rope someone into a conversation, friendship or your bed. DON’T do it by yourself.

Don’t be a creeper — make sure you approach a new person with an interesting, unique reason. / GETTY IMAGES

Invite the hot stranger and their partner (or friends!) to join you and your partner (or friends!) for drinks, a comedy show or dinner. Triads and quads keep things light and provide a higher number of possible conversation combinations and permutations. It’s the platonic version of threesomes and swinging. At the same time, DON’T be afraid to be alone. It’s okay to fly solo at public lectures, gyms, art gallery openings, author readings at your favorite bookstore and city-sponsored cultural events. Going alone means you’ll grow more comfortable with independence — a necessity for all healthy interpersonal relationships. You’ll also meet other singles with shared interests.

Advice

Do your research You may already have potential targets among friends of friends. Ask around. Chances are that those you love and respect are in touch DO put your typing fingers to work to get creative about breaking the ice. Dating sites aren’t only the tip of the iceberg, they’re also melting. Seriously, who doesn’t have an Internet dating horror story?! Try MeetUp.com or DiscoverOutdoors.com. Google local film societies and social sports clubs. Make the earth below you your common ground:

with like-minded souls. Tell everyone you want to meet someone new and suggest they recommend others who might be good matches for you. Have the friend introduce you or contact them yourself. the hiking trip, movie or soccer game provides great conversation fodder. Remember: It’s easiest to connect when you have a connector. For example, instead of rushing out when credits roll, casually mention to the person seated near you, “God, wasn’t the end of that film awful?! I love this director’s work, and she’s usually much better with closing films.”

‘Hey Bartender’ — what should we order? Drinks. A new ďŹ lm chronicles the world’s best mixologists. We had them tell us what to order when we visit them. Many bar fights could be started over the best bartender this city has to offer, but the ones profiled in “Hey Bartenderâ€? are the creme de la creme de menthe. This new film is a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to be a cocktail connoisseur, with commentary from those who would know, like nightlife impresario Amy Sacco. We asked six of the film’s stars to tell us about the drinks that they recommend for you. — “Hey Bartenderâ€? opens Friday at Village East Cinema (181-189 Second Ave., 212-529-6799) and is available OnDemand.

Putting Estonia on the map Hot chef. Andrey Korobyak brings his cuisine to Courgette. When you think of Estonia, you might think of... well, not much. Indeed, the country isn’t as well known on the map as its neighbor to the north, Finland, but it has given the world Skype (its inventors are natives) and now, Andrey Korobyak. Korobyak is the executive chef at Courgette, a Midtown establishment where classical, NorthernEuropean techniques cross with farm-to-table New American dining. Korobyak, who represented Estonia in the 2009 Bocuse d’Or (kind of like the Olympics of cooking), spoke with us about his career. You do a lot of salting, curing, smoking and pickling at Courgette. What are your favorite foods to preserve? I do more preserving when the season is right. I did a lot of this in my other restaurants, but in New York I will start this summer. Usually, I work with ingredients like mushrooms, berries, herbs, wood sorrel and ramps. I’ll

dry, salt or pickle these to make things like chutneys or confitures (a type of jam or preserve). How did you prepare yourself — mentally and physically — for the Bocuse d’Or? The Bocuse d’Or is one of the most exciting challenges a chef can undertake — for those who like to compete, of course. I was very happy — and lucky — to represent Estonia as a commis chef alongside head chef Vladislav Djatsuk. We prepared by training every day, creating the same dishes over and over again until we achieved perfection. Making dishes fast was very important, so we worked hard to minimize the time it took to prepare every part of the menu and simultaneously improve the food itself. Mentally, it was also hard. The pressure was high because the whole country was watching us as if we were going to Olympic Games. You’re only 27 and you’ve already had massive success — training at Michelin-starred restaurants, competing in the Bocuse d’Or, taking over as an executive chef. Where will you go from here? I try to do my best and never stop working to im-

It’s very hard to say. The best meals I’ve had are all good in different ways. If I were to pick one, it would be the tasting menu from Restaurant Geranium in Copenhagen, Denmark, created by Chef Rasmus Kofoed. One of the tasting dishes was made with fresh new potatoes from a farm, boiled with lovage and glazed with butter and shallots. Chef Kofoed served them with pickled spring and pearl onions, onion dust, melted Danish cheese, a potato-leek foam and crunchy chips.

Orange wine making a splash Drinks. Red and white aren’t the only colors you have to choose from. We love a crisp rosé just as much as the next person, but this summer, we’re noticing orange wines in bloom at restaurants across the city. Orange wine is essentially the opposite of a rosé. A rosé is a light red wine; orange wine is actually a dark white wine. Orange wine is a category of dark whites — the color isn’t Nickelodeon orange, per se, but rather something more golden or brownish in color. “What winemakers would do is say ‘OK, let’s treat our whites like reds,’ ” says Laura Maniec, the

master sommelier and co-founder of Corkbuzz Wine Studio. “What historically we do is separate juice from skins in white wine. Now let’s ferment our juice with white skins and see if it does anything.” It does do something, after all — create the orange-y vino that’s got a flavor a bit different from your usual pinot blanc. “Expect something more oxidative in nature,” she says. One way to figure out if you’ll like it: Are you more the type who likes a freshly cut apple, or an apple that’s been sitting out for a bit and is a little less tangy? If you prefer the latter, orange wine may be your new go-to. “It will be a departure from that fresh and zippy style,” Maniec adds. “You get texture like a red, but it’s refreshing like a white.” The one thing you might not like about orange wine? The sticker price. Indeed,

Felice 64 gives its visitors some insight into orange wine. PROVIDED
