NY police officers unite to help a sister in blue Support. A brain tumor left a young sergeant unable to speak, and her colleagues are helping to pay her medical bills. On Oct. 22, NYPD Sgt. Agy Pena went to the doctor with headaches and fainting spells. She went alone because she didn’t think it was a big deal, she said. But she was sent for an MRI, and when she returned to the doctor’s office, she was given some terrifying news: she had a massive brain tumor known as anaplastic astrocytoma. Two days later, she had an operation that removed 95 percent of the mass. But doctors said trying to take out the remaining 5 percent would leave her with permanent brain damage. The surgery left her unable to speak, and with limited motor skills on her right side. Since then, she’s been in speech therapy and physical therapy, and undergoing chemo and radiation to remove the remaining mass. She finally learned to speak again last month. Mugging

She said she always knew she wanted to be a cop. “I thought that was the most exciting thing that I could do,” she said. “I didn’t want to have a job that I would wake up to and, you know, go to an office everyday and sit there.” She has chosen to stay on sick leave rather than resign, saying she doesn’t know what she would do if she wasn’t a cop. “I could think of it all in my head, but I couldn’t speak it,” she said, describing the process of learning to speak again. “My brain was kind of going like a hundred miles an hour.” The treatments have added up, leaving her with $22,000 in medical bills her insurance won’t cover. Her best friend, Sergeant Alexandra Sarubbi, and five other colleagues have organized a fundraiser near the end of the month, inviting other members of the force to come out and support their “sister in blue” with donations to help cover Pena’s medical costs. Pena said her friends have told her that support has been pouring in. She is trying to get back to her position at the 48th Precinct in the Bronx, but a recent doctor’s appointment left her sounding a little discouraged. “I don’t see it happening anytime soon,” she said. While she remains on indefinite sick leave, she powers through speech therapy and physical therapy and works to get back out on the streets, where she feels she belongs.

$90,000 stolen from car in Flushing

Self-help couple’s double suicide

Cops reported a robbery in Coney Island they say took place on June 6 at 4 p.m. The suspect allegedly followed a 56-year-old woman off of an elevator, threw her to the ground and ran off with her bag. Police are requesting that anyone with information call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477).

Approximately 2,000 high-needs sixth graders will stay an extra two and half hours at school beginning this September. The schools include six in the Bronx, six in Brooklyn, five in Queens and three in Manhattan. The students in the program will receive intense literacy training during the extra hours. LAURA SHIN

A suspect allegedly broke the driver’s side window of a car parked outside BankAsiana at 162-05 Crocheron Ave. while the driver was inside making a deposit, cops said. Police said the driver had apparently left a black plastic bag with $90,000 in cash inside the car, which he intended to deposit at a different bank.

A Brooklyn couple who hosted a self-help radio show called “The Pursuit of Happiness” killed themselves last week after an apparently long struggle with mental illness, cops said. Lynne Rosen and John Littig put plastic bags over their heads and inhaled helium, The Daily News reported.

The state Senate passed a bill to limit lawmaker leadership posts to 12year terms, The Daily News reported. Report: NY pot arrest data show racial bias Civil liberties. A new report found that more young men of color are arrested for marijuana possession. Black New Yorkers are nearly 10 times as likely as white New Yorkers to be arrested for marijuana possession in the five boroughs, according to a report from the New York Civil Liberties Union, and racial disparity apparently extends throughout the state. The NYCLU looked at federal crime data from 2010 and found black people are 4.5 times more likely than white people to be arrested for marijua-

na possession statewide, and at least twice as likely to be arrested in 52 out of 62 counties. In 2010, the state spent $678.5 million on pot

arrest-related police and court costs.

EMILY JOHNSON Letters@metro.us

NYCLU Executive Director Donna Lieberman said white New Yorkers not only make up a larger proportion of the state’s population, but also of marijuana users. “It’s been welldocumented that white people use and smoke marijuana far more than black people do,” she said. In Kings County, people of color are 9.68 times more likely to be arrested for marijuana possession than whites. Lieberman also said police often categorize Hispanic people as white, so the gap is likely even wider.

A new health department report found diabetes-related deaths are at a record high in NYC. / SPENCER PLATT, GETTY IMAGES

NYC deaths by diabetes hits all-time high Health. As Mayor Bloomberg’s soda ban goes to the Court of Appeals, a Health Department study says sugar is killing New Yorkers.

City lawyers tried to convince an appeals court on Tuesday to reinstate a ban on large, sugary drinks.

The city’s Health Department reported on Monday that diabetes-related deaths have reached an alltime high in the city. Diabetes was an underlying cause or contributing cause in a record 5,695 deaths in New York City in 2011, according to the report, adding up to one death every 90 minutes and 16 deaths a day. “Diabetes is a condition that too many people live with and die from,” said Health Commissioner Thomas Farley. “It is linked to our epidemic of obesity, and, like obesity, it can be

prevented.” People with diabetes are twice as likely to die than people without diabetes, according to the Health Department. Non-Hispanic blacks had the highest diabetesrelated mortality rate than any other group, with 116 deaths per 100,000 population. The diabetes-related mortality rate was 1.4 times higher for men than for women and 2.7 times higher among individuals in high-poverty neighborhoods than in low-poverty neighborhoods. Mayor Michael Bloomberg has maintained that the importance of his proposed sugary drink regulation — often referred to as a “soda ban” — is backed by such studies, particularly the finding that diabetes hits lower-income communities the hardest.

Volunteers flock to save Canada geese in the city Watching. Goosewatch NYC seeks to protect Canadian geese in city parks from being killed by USDA agents. More than 500 local animal advocates with Goosewatch NYC, including pilots, biologists and veterinarians, are staking out parks across the five boroughs to cry foul on the roundup and killing of Canada geese, a practice they say is barbaric and ineffective. Agents from the U.S. Department of Agriculture round up the geese

in the summer when they are molting and unable to fly. Typically, once the geese are captured, the adults are separated from the chicks, after which they are either trucked away to be slaughtered — allegedly donated to soup kitchens despite concerns about contaminated meat — or placed into mobile gas chambers to be asphyxiated. The culling of New York City geese began in 2009, largely as a response to the bird strike that sent US Airways Flight 1549 down into the Hudson in January of that year.

Government weighs surveillance leak security damage Search. Reporters are staking out hotels across Hong Kong looking for Snowden. The National Security Agency contractor who leaked top-secret details of U.S. surveillance programs remained out of sight yesterday as the Obama administration launched an internal review of the potential damage to national security by the disclosures. Voice communications are most vulnerable as they are the easiest to monitor, but there are emerging applications that offer solutions. Silent Circle, developed by cryptographers and counterterrorism specialists, uses “ephemeral keys” to encrypt calls and allows you to burn messages after sending. “There’s no record of the call, no logging — you could have the conversation in the NSA cupboard, and they wouldn’t read it,” Silent Circle CEO and former Navy SEAL Mike Janke said. “For the same reason we couldn’t give your data

to the government, we don’t have it.” Silent Circle supplies to 117 countries and Fortune 500 companies, and there is further evidence that secure calling is taking off. The NSA leak also revealed collusion with tech giants such as Facebook. Change. Obama has made immigration reform a top priority of his second term. President Barack Obama sought to inject momentum into the push for U.S. immigration reform yesterday, urging lawmakers who were “serious” about the issue to support a Senate bill and highlighting the economic benefits of changing the system. Obama, who won reelection last year thanks in part to strong support from Latino voters, has made immigration reform a top priority of his second term. He had not given a major public address on the issue for some time, reflecting a White House strategy of not wanting to get in the way of the bipartisan bill’s progress in the Senate.

House speaker

Boehner sees immigration bill by year’s end

Members of United We Dream, an immigrant youth-led organization, rallied on the steps of the Senate yesterday to call for immigration reform. / GETTY IMAGES

Obama’s speech yesterday was the first major departure from that strategy. The Senate bill would authorize billions of dollars in new spending for enhanced border security and create new visa programs for high- and lowskilled workers. It would also provide a pathway to citizenship for the roughly 11 million undocumented

immigrants currently in the country. “If you genuinely believe we need to fix our broken immigration system, there’s no good reason to stand in the way of this bill,” Obama said at the White House, adding that the bill could be wrapped up by the end of the summer. REUTERS

House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner said he expects an overhaul of immigration rules to become law by the end of the year, but that the Senate’s version “doesn’t go far enough” to secure the border with Mexico or enforce the proposed new system. “I’ve got real concerns about the Senate bill, especially in the area of border security and internal enforcement of the system. I’m concerned that it doesn’t go far enough,” Boehner, the top Republican in Congress, told ABC in an interview. REUTERS

PlayStation 4 strikes back at Xbox One Gaming. Still, Sony may win this round of console wars just yet.

When the newest iteration of Sony’s PlayStation was announced in February, audiences angrily mumbled about the fact that there was no physical image of the gaming console, no hard release date and nothing but theoretical specs and some footage from games still in development. The company announced more details about the PS4 this week at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Santa Monica, Calif. Among the highlights: the fact that the console will not require an Interinternet connection, and old games can be exchanged

There’s still no word on how much hard drive space the PS4 will have and whether it will compare to the Xbox One’s 500GB offering.

to upload every game played onto the player’s console. The PS4 will also have a cloud-based gaming partnership with Gaikai, so gamers can stream PS3 and PS4 games online. This feature won’t be available immediately,

but it is planned for 2014. Most importantly, the PS4 will be $399 in the U.S. — $100 cheaper than Microsoft’s new machine.

The founder of the WikiLeaks website, at the center of the trial of a soldier charged with the biggest U.S. leak of classified material, solicited secret military information during a 2009 conference in Berlin, a Marine Corps computer security expert testified yesterday. On the witness stand at the court-martial of Private First Class Bradley Manning, Staff Sergeant Matthew Hosburgh said he attended the 2009 computer security conference to update himself on potential threats to U.S. data networks, which he helped manage. WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange’s one-hour lecture at the conference included an appeal for secret military information, Hosburgh said. “Not only classified information, but also trade secrets and anything of that nature,” he testified.

China’s latest ‘sacred’ manned space mission blasts off

British riot police clashed with anticapitalist protesters in running confrontations through the streets of central London yesterday, arresting at least 32 people as activists targeted some of the world’s biggest companies before next week’s G8 summit. About 100 protesters gathered outside oil company BP Plc’s headquarters, while others chanted “war criminals” at the office of U.S. defense company Lockheed Martin. One protester lunged toward officers on the top of a fourstory building where activists had been holed up and was wrestled to the ground by police wearing abseiling ropes just inches from the roof’s unprotected edge. A Chinese manned spacecraft blasted off with three astronauts onboard yesterday on a 15-day mission to an experimental space lab in the latest step toward the development of a space station. The Shenzhou 10 spacecraft was launched from a remote site in the Gobi desert in China’s far west at 5:38 p.m. under warm, clear blue skies, in images carried live on state television. Once in orbit, the craft will dock with the trial space laboratory module Tiangong 1 — which means Heavenly Palace — and the two male and one female astronauts will carry out various experiments and test the module’s systems.

Riots. Western allies expressed concern about the troubles in an important NATO ally bordering Syria, Iraq and Iran. Turkish riot police using tear gas and water cannons battled protesters for control of Istanbul’s Taksim Square last night, hours after Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan demanded an immediate end to 10 days of demonstrations. The governor of Istanbul went on television to declare that police operations would continue day and night until the square, focus of demonstrations against Erdogan, was cleared. Police fired volleys of tear gas canisters into a crowd of thousands — people in office clothes as well as youths in masks

Gangster. Heated arguments in court on eve of Bulger trial An attorney for alleged Boston mob boss James “Whitey” Bulger shouted over the judge on the eve of his murder trial, accusing state police of turning a blind eye to the purported crimes of a witness who is a former associate of the accused gangster. Bulger sat quietly in U.S. District Court as his lawyer J.W. Carney accused the government of not providing enough detail into an internal police probe over the handling of witness James Martorano. But U.S. District Judge Denise Casper denied his request to delay the trial’s opening statements, scheduled for today, to allow more time to investigate the issue. Casper told the 12 jurors and six alternates, whose selection was finalized yesterday, to be ready for the trial to begin as scheduled. Carney charged that Massachusetts State Police

Justin Bieber — who, if you haven’t heard, is most definitely not a kid anymore and is, in fact, a very adult man — posted a picture of a bra to his Instagram, along with the caption, “I guess everyone grows up.” We’re not sure if this means that he’s grown up because some girl sent him said bra or because his mom just took him shopping for his first Maidenform, but there’s no disputing the fact that Justin Bieber is an adult, OK, world?

Octomom caught, red-tentacled, stealing government funds If, on the other hand, we were in the business of grading women we’ve never met on their parenting skills, we’d probably stamp the report card of Nadya Suleman, aka Octomom, with a big red F for “oh, for f—’s sake.” A long-time top contender for the award for “Sleaziest Way to Get Famous,” Octomom is making headlines again, this time around for committing welfare

When the show ďŹ rst started, did you know that Pam was going to become such a big part of the show? I definitely did not. When I auditioned, they said that it was a guest starring role, possibly recurring. Once Alex (Skarsgard) and I started, they kept calling us back. But Season 2, there wasn’t as much Pam. So all of a sudden when Season 3 came around and they started adding quite a bit more Pam, that was a lovely surprise because I love the role and I also love the people I’m working with. Pam is actually one of our favorite characters on the show, and her character has really evolved. At ďŹ rst she was straight-up evil, but now

Q&A

Where do you see yourself going next, once the show has run its course? A couple of things would be fun for me. One is to go back to comedy, which is where I started. I would love to go back to that world, possibly with a live audience. And then, I have a secret hope that I can stay in the world of cable television, HBO. It’s just nice to be in a world without advertising. Kids today don’t know that the networks are free. You can get a coat hanger and you can watch ABC and CBS and NBC. So, I understand they have to be paid for, but it is a different feel working for HBO where the creative content doesn’t have that control and we get to do things that you can’t do when little kids might be watching and people might be trying to sell soap.

they’re revealing more layers to all of the characters. Do you think she’s more good than bad? I don’t know if it is a bad sign, or if I’m becoming sort of delusional, but I don’t know if she’s good or evil. But she’s definitely ‌ correct. I feel like what she says, we’re all thinking. You know, she only kills bad people. I feel like she’s a little bit of the person we all wish we could be, but we wouldn’t be able to maintain jobs and friends. [Laughs] To be on top of the food chain, she doesn’t have to worry about liking anybody or vice-versa — people liking her especially. I just think it’s really refreshing. Speaking to that, there are more powerful female characters in the show than weak ones. In

These writers, I think are very sensitive to writing strong female characters. And in my career, that’s just been rare. I haven’t personally gotten to play terribly strong characters before this. I really enjoyed the characters I played, but they were vulnerable, possibly not too bright. You know, using sexuality to try and get by. were sitting around Video Village this week and someone was reading an article about the astoundingly small percentage of females in top positions in Hollywood, and we looked up and realized that there were seven women and only one guy ... in that area. We had a woman producer, a woman [as the director of photography], a woman script supervisor, me and then just one guy. And I thought, “Wow, what a lovely world for a woman to be in. It’s so unusual. Pam and other female characters do use their sexuality as a tool, but it’s in an empowered way, not in a weak way. Yeah, that’s Pam. I think everyone in “True Blood is very sexual, but defi-

Do you feel that the inux of vampire shows, movies and books, and just sort of this obsession with vampires as of late, has made people lose interest? Do you think it’s on the wane? I don’t know. I’m so surprised by it. I am a little out of touch with all of the different TV shows and movies, but just this week, I saw that there was another one coming out, or just came out, with vampire teens, and I thought, “Wow, its apparently not waning.â€? I find that so interesting. And we’ve all analyzed it, all of us on the show, to try to make some sense of it, but all I can do is sort of make up a theory. I’m not exactly sure if it’s true, but it may be a symptom of our time, of wanting to escape. And for me as an actress, it’s an incredible place to escape to play a character that has no fear of dying, of poverty, of illness, of aging. You know, those are all of the things that we, as humans, spend a lot of time thinking about.

An Oscar-nominated film and countless recordings have been created to honor country great Johnny Cash, but this will be the first time he travels the world forever. Last week, the United States Postal Service unveiled a Forever stamp honoring him in their Music Icons series. His daughter, Rosanne Cash, says the idea of her father’s face adorning letters around the world is an exciting honor. “It would be so special to him,â€? she says. “He’s now going to be touring the planet forever. ‌ And that’s what he loved, he loved touring.â€? She adds, “It’s the ultimate American honor, in a way.â€?

Rosanne Cash has a new album coming out in January. She says it’s about the South and her relationship with the region, partially inspired by Arkansas State University restoring her father’s boyhood home. “My heart started to swell,â€? she says. The region, she says, is “really the bed of where this music came from. The connection to that music is so profound to me.â€? Her last record, “Black Cadillac,â€? was a “totally different mindset,â€? she says. “It was such a painful process, painful and liberating,â€? she says. “This had the richness of going that deep into the past and the future ‌ and it didn’t have the heaviness of heart that ‘Black Cadillac’ had.â€? She adds, “There’s something very celebratory about it, even though some of the songs are very dark.â€? — Cash performs in September in New York with John Prine at the Beacon Theater.

Neil LaBute advises: Go on, get ‘Happy’ Theater review. With “The Office” over, Jenna Fischer is moving on to live audiences. Does TV’s Jenna Fischer have the chops for offBroadway? You bet she does. She’s as comfortable onstage at the Lucille Lortel as she was behind the reception desk on “The Office.” In “Reasons to Be Happy,” playwright/ director Neil LaBute gives her a chance to stretch as Steph, a hairstylist who doesn’t hesitate to use the nearest male as a punching bag when the mood strikes. But Fischer isn’t the only standout; the rest of the cast is right there with her. The four-member ensemble — which also includes Josh Hamilton, Les-

lie Bibb and Fred Weller — is tight. And LaBute has given each a unique voice that sets them apart, yet brings them together, propelling the play through an obstacle course of humor and frayed feelings. At center is Greg (Hamilton), Steph’s ex, a poster child for emotional vacillation. Steph wants him back, but he’s gotten pretty, level-headed Carly (Bibb) pregnant. He’s got to make a choice, and choosing’s not his thing. So he bobs and weaves If you go

and stammers and evades and tries, with limited success, to stay out of the line of fire. e. Meanwhile, Kent (Weller), Carly’s ex and Greg’s kinda-sorta bud, wishes he could get back with Carly. He has the least st stage time, but the most laughs as a dumbeddown jock whose anger management issues make Steph seem like a pussycat. “Reasons to Be Happy” is a sequel to LaBute’s “Reasons to Be Pretty” from 2009’s Broadway lineup, but each play stands on its own. With its vivid characters and LaBute’s uncanny ear for dialogue, it’s a good reason to — no, we’re not going to say it.

Summer moving guide Tips. A FlatRate Moving expert gives us advice on how to make our next move pain-free. The summer moving season is upon us again — 65 percent of moves occur from May 15 through Aug. 31. So whether you’re a coed headed back home for break or newlyweds signing a lease on your first place together, you’re going to go through the pains of packing. Andrea Boccard, vice president of marketing at FlatRate Moving, offers some tips on how to make the process stress-free.

Your step-by-step moving guide De-clutter: Before boxing things up, Boccard says it’s important to de-clutter. “Even in teeny apart-

ments, we tend to accumulate a lot of stuff, she says. “Spend a few days getting rid of the items that you don’t need, like takeout menus from the old neighborhood. Just clearing that space will give you a clear picture of what you’re actually packing. Create a “move book: The key is to stay organized. Keep the important details of your move together in a book or folder on your computer. “It should include everything from lists you make, to your insurance and building management information, to estimates you receive, says Boccard. Know the rules: “You should be in close contact with the management for both [your new and old] buildings, says Boccard. She advises reserving freight elevators and making sure your movers have the proper insurance coverage your building requires. “Any hitch in the

Pack in advance: “Plan your move more than a month in advance if you can, says Boccard. Start by packing the items you don’t need, such as books. “The biggest thing we see when we organize moves is, we ask people, ‘Do you want us to pack for you?’

And they say ‘No, no, I’ll pack myself,’ but two weeks before [the move], they’re nearly in tears because they’re unable to do it, she says. “So being realistic about time and what time you allocate to moving activities is the best advice I can give. Stay organized: Staying organized while your life

Lights, camera — profit! Real estate. Homes on the market are raking in big bucks from TV and movie location shoots.

Is your home sitting on the market? Why not rent it out to Hollywood? GETTY IMAGES

Even in today’s market, some listings will sit unsold, of course. A mansion in Yonkers with interiors dating to the 16th century, an architecturally unique Park Slope mansion asking $18 million — these homes may take a moment to find the perfect buyer. One way for the seller to pocket big bucks in the interim is to rent out the listed space to film and television shoots. “It’s a great opportunity for New Yorkers to make money with their homes,” says Charlotte Wagster, a Douglas Elliman agent who has rented several listings to production companies. One of the locations: Greystone Court, a 14,000-square-foot Yonkers home, where HBO filmed

scenes for “Boardwalk Empire” and Beyonce taped her “Irreplaceable” video. The castle’s owner, Kohle Yohannan, has made so much money from shoots that he’s no longer interested in selling. The Gothic Revival mansion, with its 18 bedrooms, went on the market three years ago for $4.95 million.

BEYONCE SHOT HER MUSIC VIDEO FOR “IRREPLACEABLE” AT GREYSTONE COURT IN YONKERS.

“It’s so much equipment, so much wear and tear on your home, but he has been paid up to $40,000 a day,” Wagster told The Real Deal. This strategy, of course, carries huge risks as well as huge rewards: damage to the home, angry neighbors and missing the buyer who can only see the house on his two-day visit from Uruguay. Still, many owners are happy to put it all on the line, and not just for the money. Citi Habitats broker Stefania Cardinali is offering an airy Williamsburg loft for shoots because its owner wants exposure for her art. Not every space works for a shoot, though. Location scouts are looking for places that have open floor plans and good lighting — or where lights can be brought in. Plus, building elevators must be able to accommodate all kinds of equipment. The kind of production matters, too. A full-length

feature ponies up more cash but keeps the listing off the market longer. “If it’s a movie, they book the location months in advance, and so sellers don’t want to commit [usually],” says Barbara Wilson, a Halstead agent who rents spaces for shoots. With more shows being filmed in NYC — in no small part because of a big push from Mayor Michael Bloomberg — it is getting tougher and tougher to find spaces that owners, boards and location scouts can agree on, Wilson said. Still, when everyone comes together, a location can be a gold mine. “Say you make $10,000 a day,” says Wagster. “Think about how much you make in a month.” GUELDA VOIEN

BLOCKBUSTER SEASON: STAY INSIDE THIS SUMMER

Summer has long been the season of blockbuster movies, but only in the last couple of years have publishers started saving some of their big games for the warmer months. After all, popular wisdom dictates that people like to be outside and not cooped up playing video games. Well, popular wisdom is stupid. Being inside rules! Being outside drools. Here are some big titles that have just dropped.

‘The Last of Us’ System: PS3 Maker: Naughty Dog

•••••

My, how the times have changed. It used to be that if you wanted a good dystopian drama you’d head to the multiplex. Now,

however, that multiplex only has Will Smith’s “After Earth.” Meanwhile your PS3 has the stellar “The Last of Us.” This game is not only a masterwork of interactive fiction, it’s a masterwork, period. Video games have just about grown up (finally). If you’ve played the “Uncharted” series you have a vague grasp on what the gameplay is like. You wander a beautifully rendered postapocalyptic wasteland, 20 years after a fungal outbreak. This is a simple tale of survival, with narrative ties to Cormac McCarthy’s “The Road.” Unlike most video games, the violence here is extremely real. You spend most of your time hiding and each and every bullet counts. This one will keep you up at night.

‘Animal Crossing: New Leaf’ System: 3DS Maker: Nintendo

•••••

“The Last of Us” puts you in a scarily realistic dystopian wasteland. / NAUGHTY DOG

Now to shift from dystopias to villages filled with talking animals. “Animal Crossing: New Leaf” is an addictive “life sim.” The goal of this series is that there is no goal. You simply hang out in this village. You spend your time fishing, writing letters or digging holes around your neighbors’ houses so they are trapped inside forever. The hook in this new iteration is that you are now mayor. This means you now have much more control over the look and feel of the village. It’s a fun and surreal take on both “The Sims” and “Sim City.”

iPhone users who are all too familiar with the female voice of Siri will be able to opt for a male voice instead. Apple announced at the Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco on Monday new updates to Siri with its iOS 7 update, which will roll out in Fall 2013. In addition to a

new design, which will include a wavelength image at the bottom of the app when results are being processed, Siri will feature an option for users to switch its voice response from a female to a male tone. Siri will also integrate with Wikipedia and search results from Bing, Microsoft’s search engine,

How does OCD begin? Location of study: U.S. Study subjects: Mice Results: A study published in the journal Science offers some new clues about what causes obsessive-compulsive disorder. Scientists stimulated specific brain circuits in mice repeatedly for multiple days, resulting in progressive development of repetitive behaviors that persisted up to two weeks after the stimulation stopped. When the mice were dosed with fluoxetine, a common OCD medication, their behavior returned to normal. Significance: Researchers hope that they can pinpoint this area of the brain to stop abnormal changes before they lead to compulsions. OCD affects 2 to 3 percent of the population worldwide.

Virtual colonoscopies can be used later on women Location of study: Italy/U.S. Study subjects: 7,620 patients referred for a first-time screening with virtual colonoscopy Results: Men should have a virtual colonoscopy between the ages of 55 and 60, but women can wait until at least 60, a report published in the American Cancer Society magazine CANCER found. Significance: As timing in cancer screening is critical, the findings may help establish guidelines for the use of this screening

Trouble down there

Younger men getting erectile dysfunction Location of study: Italy Study subjects: 439 men seeking medical help for newly developed erectile dysfunction Results: One in four men seeking medical help for newly developed erectile dysfunction was younger than 40, according to research in the technique, which is less invasive than a traditional colonoscopy.

Women more likely to get COPD Location of study: U.S. Study subjects: Data study Results: Women are 37 percent more likely to have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) than men, according to a new study from the American Lung Association. More than 7 million women in the United States have COPD, and the number of deaths among them has more than quadrupled since 1980. Significance: Deborah Brown, president and CEO of the American Lung Association of the Mid-Atlantic, blames these figures on tobacco advertising targeting women. Smoking is the primary cause of COPD, but air pollution is another factor.

Journal of Sexual Medicine. Nearly half of the younger men with the condition had severe ED, too. The report states that younger men were more likely to smoke cigarettes and use recreational drugs more frequently than older patients. Significance: Erectile dysfunction can be part of the natural aging process, but its prevalence in younger men is causing concern.

Non-invasive screening detects Down’s syndrome Location of study: UK Study subjects: Pregnant women in the first trimester Results: A non-invasive routine screening that analyzes fetal DNA can accurately detect Down’s syndrome, or trisomy 21, and other trisomy conditions in the first trimester, says a study published online at Ultrasound in Obstetrics & Gynecology. Researchers said that the test substantially reduced false positives, too. Significance: Other standard invasive tests have a risk of causing miscarriage, which deters many mothers from such testing.

SUMMERTIME AND THE LIVING IS ITCHY The question

Why does this rash itch so much, and what can I do about it?

Summer is a season of itching. Poison plants, allergies, sunburns, bug bites, scabies and mysterious rashes can all cause pruritus, the medical term for the sensation of an itch that needs scratching. The skin releases inflammatory chemicals, including histamine, in response to contact or exposure to substances that cause allergic reactions or injury to the skin. This stimulates the dilation of blood vessels and resulting localized redness and swelling associated with rashes and itching. People who have baseline high circulating levels of histamine often get rashes merely from scratching their skin or being exposed to heat. The general symptomatic treatment for all itch-

ing includes over-the-counter antihistamines (like Benadryl), topical creams containing hydrocortisone and avoiding exposure to heat. Prescription steroids may be administered by your physician for worsening or severe allergic reactions. Hot showers will make itching worse if you are already feeling prickly. Some common summertime causes of itching for which there are specific remedies include:

Poison plants Poison ivy, poison oak and poison sumac are found locally in parks, wooded areas and backyards. When the skin comes in contact with resin from the leaves of these plants, collectively called toxicodendrons, the skin erupts in a red-based rash of small blister-like bumps that are very itchy. Prevention is the best medicine, so if you are going to be outdoors gardening, hiking or camping, take care to identify

these plants beforehand, and wear clothing that keeps your arms and legs covered. Wear gloves if you are pulling out weeds. If you become exposed, wash all skin surfaces and under your fingernails thoroughly with soap and water, as the toxin is not contagious, but may spread between body parts. Treatment involves washing, antihistamines and possibly steroid creams or oral systemic steroid pills prescribed by your doctor. Also, make sure to wash your pets, clothing and shoes, as you can be re-exposed after you leave the great outdoors.

Insect bites Mosquitoes, fleas, chiggers, bedbugs, lice and scabies are common itchy nuisances. Treat bites with antihistamines and topical hydrocortisone cream. If there is any doubt about the source of the itching, or if after treatment things get worse, visit your primary care doctor or dermatologist — you might need antibiotics.

Ticks Ticks transmit a number of infectious illnesses, including Lyme disease, Rocky

Scratching may be initially satisfying, but it usually leads to more itching. Breaking the skin by aggressive scratching may also result in a greater risk of infection. / ABLESTOCK.COM

Mountain spotted fever and Ehrlichiosis, to name a few. A small itch on your leg or neck after being outdoors may reveal a tick embedded in your skin. If the tick doesn’t come off easily when grasped with a tweezers, cover it with

Vaseline and try again in an hour. This smothers the tick and may release its grip. If this doesn’t work, see a health care professional, as identification of the tick, as well as preventive treatment for Lyme disease, may be indicated.

Gemini | May 22-June 20. f you’re not careful, instead of magnifying your virtues, you’re more likely to amplify some of the less attractive aspects of yourself. Cancer | June 21-July 22. Since certain endeavors that usually come easy to you could be fraught with unforeseen complications, you had better allow plenty of time to maneuver. Leo | July 23-Aug. 22. Don’t allow serious matters to become boring or oppressive, but don’t dismiss them.

Virgo | Aug. 23-Sept. 22. If your optimism turns out to be unfounded, disappointment will naturally follow. Libra | Sept. 23-Oct. 22. Don’t depend too heavily on Lady Luck to fulfill your ambitions. Unless you show her that you’re working hard, she is likely to direct her best efforts elsewhere. Scorpio | Oct. 23-Nov. 21. There is a strong possibility that you will be more prone to focus on the details than on the big picture. Try to keep your perspective.

Sagittarius | Nov. 22-Dec. 21. You will likely be inclined to tempt the fates in areas where you know the odds are stacked against you. This would be foolish.

Pisces | Feb. 19-March 20. Temporarily postpone purchasing a luxury item if it doesn’t fit comfortably within your budget.

Capricorn | Dec. 22-Jan 20. Usually, you’re a pretty shrewd horse trader, yet today you could make an agreement that benefits the other party much more than it does you. Aquarius | Jan. 21-Feb 18. If you should happen to make a mistake in your work, don’t try to hide it.

Nicks present, if not accounted for, at camp NFL. The receiver didn’t explain his absences, but did show yesterday. Giants wide receiver Hakeem Nicks was present at yesterday’s opening of mandatory minicamp. As for where he was the past few weeks, we still don’t know. Nicks missed nine organized team activities — technically voluntary, but not in practice — the past few weeks and didn’t shine a light on why as minicamp opened. He would’ve been fined if he hadn’t shown up. “I’m not here to talk about that,” Nicks said. “I’m here to talk about me being here right now, so that’s what I’m doing. I’m here. I’m happy to be back around my teammates.” If Nicks was elusive, his

head coach was defiant. “We talked. We’ll talk again,” Tom Coughlin said. “That’s between he and I.” Coughlin said he was happy to have the receiver, who is a free agent after this season, back in camp, but made special note of him being behind. “He’s definitely not in tune with where we are,” Coughlin said. “We’ve had nine OTAs and we’ve thrown a lot at him. He’s just had one meeting.” Victor Cruz was a noshow, as expected. Cruz has yet to sign his oneyear tender. He reportedly hopes to work out a longterm deal with the Giants. “I’ve been optimistic since Day 1 and it hasn’t gotten me anywhere, has it?” Coughlin said. “I just continue to be that way. The clock is running.”

News that Tim Tebow — the Jets’ former backup quarterback, former personal punt protector and former distraction — was headed to Foxboro to sign with the Patriots was greeted by his old team with praise for the quarterback’s work ethic and character, but little else. Jets head coach Rex Ryan had nothing but positives to say about a player who had a mini-

mal impact on the field last year, but created a firestorm off it. Ryan poked a bit of fun at the move, as Tebow is not guaranteed to make the New England roster beyond this week’s minicamp and he could well start the season behind future Hall of Famer Tom Brady and Ryan Mallett on the depth chart. “If they want to replace him with Brady, Just “Hi”

that’s fine,” Ryan said. His former coach isn’t surprised Tebow got picked up by another team despite some doubters. “It’s not surprising to me that Tim got picked up. Obviously, as I’ve said before, a tremendous young man, very competitive,” Ryan said. “I’m happy for him. I look forward to competing against him.” KRISTIAN DYER

Belichick brief on Tebow It’s going to be a long season for reporters in New England. Patriots head coach Bill Belichick held his first press conference of minicamp yesterday — coinciding with the signing of Tim Tebow — and was his usual dour self. A few minutes into it, after all Tebow questions, Belichick cut it off. “I think I’ve covered it,” Belichick said. “Anything else?”

There is no change at the top as the Cardinals continue to be the best team in all of baseball. Coming o their impressive 11-4, 10-inning win on Sunday night over the Reds, they have won three of their last four and have a major league-leading plus-98 run dierential. They began a six-game road trip last night, but with them against the Mets and Marlins they should keep ahold of the top spot another week.

A tough 2-4 week against the Red Sox and Blue Jays on the road dropped the Rangers down two spots to No. 4. Their oense was the issue.

A major reason why the Pirates continue to play well is their pitching, both starting and out of the bullpen. They play their next six at home.

Baltimore went .500 on its six-game road trip this past week and still remain in third place in the ultracompetitive AL East. The pitching needs to step up.

A 4-2 week has propelled the Rockies to second place in the NL West and they are threatening the Diamondbacks for ďŹ rst place.

The Yankees enjoyed a 6-1 week, but the Red Sox played solid ball as well so they could not gain any ground in the standings.

A 7-4 record in their last 11 games is among the best in baseball and moves the Braves up a spot in the rankings.

The Red Sox may be one of the biggest surprises in all of baseball following their 69-win season last year.

It wasn’t the best of weeks for the Reds as they lost four of their last ďŹ ve going into the week, but rebounded Monday.

Despite their record, the Tigers have the best run dierential in the AL at plus-82 and will be right in the playo mix.

Although the NL West might be one of the worst divisions in baseball, that doesn’t mean the team atop the division is bad.

The Nationals had two games rained out last week, but of the games they played they went 3-2.
