An investigation into what caused a Green Line trolley to derail Monday afternoon is narrowing in on the actions of the operator, who has been taken off the job as officials examine the circumstances of the accident.

Ten people were injured at 12:20 p.m. Monday — includ-

ing the driver — when the Riverside-bound D line trolley veered off the tracks, causing another trolley to stop short behind it.

A thorough inspection of the track and signal systems revealed no defects nor anomalies, and preliminary testing found no mechanical issues with the trolley’s equipment, according to MBTA Spokeswoman Kelly Smith.

“Investigators continue to take a close look at the performance of the motorperson who was operating the train at the time,” Smith said.

Gardner has a slew of motor vehicle driving infractions in records from the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles.

They allegedly include speeding, failure to stop and several license suspensions for failure to make required payments, WCVB reported.

When asked if speed was a factor in the crash, Smith said, “It is certainly among the factors being considered but the investigation continues. No concrete determinations have been made at this time.”

“The MBTA is conducting the investigation, which will take as long as is necessary to establish all the facts,” she

added.

Boston EMS Spokesman Nick Martin said 10 patients were transported following the derailment, “all with relatively minor injuries.” MBTA Spokesman Joe Pesaturo said Monday that many victims complained of back pain.

Service on the D and C branches was suspended through Monday evening, though crews were able to restore Green Line service in time for the Tuesday morning commute.

In the hope of identifying the assailants, Transit Police on Tuesday released video that shows a group of men and women who were caught on camera pummeling passengers on a Red Line train over the weekend.

Transit Police said the fight broke out around 9 p.m. Sunday following a verbal dispute, as the train neared Broadway MBTA Station.

Three passengers in total were assaulted — one man and two women.

The argument prompted the suspects to attack the original victim, causing two nearby women to intervene.

The women had no prior re-

lationship to the first victim, police said, and attempted to persuade the group to stop the beating when the suspects turned on them.

The female suspects are described as white, between 18 and 25 years old. One is blonde and one is brunette.

The male suspects are described as white — one in his late teens, two in their 30s, and one in his 40s.

The video, which appears to have been captured by cell phone, is available at Metro. us/Boston.

According to the Boston Police Department, the victim recognized her alleged attacker as he played basketball on Monday evening. She then contacted authorities, who rushed to the scene and arrested him.

A defense attorney for Ross Currier, 26, of Salem

Street, said in court that his client is an innocent man; a professional who was with his fiancee on the night of the attack.

Currier was released on personal recognizance, and ordered to avoid contact with the victim and wear a GPS bracelet.

At about 1:11 a.m. on Feb. 14, officers responded to the scene of the crime near

Unity Street in the North End. The victim told police that while entering her foyer, a suspect pushed his way in behind her and indecently assaulted her.

The victim further reported that the suspect then took a photo with his cellphone and fled the area toward Tileston Street.

in the country to one of the best in the world. Investing in protected bike lanes is a critical path to that success,” Mayor Marty Walsh said.

The six cities were chosen from more than 100 U.S. cities that submitted letters of interest for the program.

Other selected cities include Atlanta, Denver, Indianapolis, Pittsburgh and Seattle.

Group seeks zero waste in Boston Recycle, reduce, reuse. Task force aims to help Boston eliminate its waste output by 2040.

A group dedicated to getting Boston’s waste down to zero in the next 26 years is pleading with the city, “Don’t waste this opportunity.”

The Boston Zero Waste Task Force released a plan Tuesday that aims to move Boston’s overall diversion recycling rate to 50 percent by 2020, 75 percent by 2030, and zero by 2040.

To get there, the city must focus on reducing, reusing, and of course, recycling, according to the group, which is urging the city to extend producer responsibility, implement a ban on single use plastic bags and Styrofoam containers, ensure

that recycling and food waste t receptacles are available in all public spaces, and manufacture and remanufacture products locally. The group also suggests that the city create and fund a reuse coordinator position to help develop and support local reuse businesses and expand donation programs.

“Boston has the opportunity to get into the spotlight nationally and create a world class program,” said Alex Papali of the Boston Recycling Coalition and Clean Water Action.

The recommendations follow a series of meetings since June 2013. The task force represents small start-ups, large businesses and institutions, policy experts, environmental advocates, municipal agencies and both current and hopeful future workers.

Locals compete to see if they have ‘The Voice’ Competition. Kristen Merlin and Noah Lis are the latest Bay Staters to compete on NBC’s popular show.

For years, Kristen Merlin’s name was a frequent sight on signs outside bars and lounges across the South Shore.

Now her name can be seen on TV screens across the country.

Merlin, a Hanson native, is the latest Bay Stater to compete on NBC’s singing competition “The Voice.” Joining her this season is Noah Lis, a 22-yearold Westfield State University senior from Palmer.

To qualify, the 29-year-old Merlin performed “Something More” by Sugarland. The performance prompted Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine and singer Shakira to fight for Merlin to be on their teams.

“She’s very important to me,” Shakira said during Merlin’s audition.

Merlin ended up picking Shakira to be her coach and to help her make it through the upcoming competition rounds.

Merlin said she blacked out when her audition started.

Before competing on TV, Merlin said she worked as her own manager and did everything herself. Now that she’s appeared on a nationally televised singing competition show, it’s a little harder.

“It’s overwhelming, but great because I spent so many years knocking down doors to get in and now I’m pleased to have people approaching me to have me play at their venues,” she said.

Malaysia’s military believes a jetliner missing for almost four days turned and flew hundreds of kilometers to the west after it last made contact with civilian air traffic control off the country’s east coast, a senior officer told Reuters on Tuesday.

In one of the most baffling mysteries in recent aviation history, a massive search operation for the Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777-200ER has so far found no trace of the aircraft.

Malaysian authorities have previously said flight MH370 disappeared about an hour after it took off from Kuala Lumpur for the Chinese capital Beijing.

“It changed course after Kota Bharu and took a lower altitude. It made it into the Malacca Strait,” the senior military officer, who has been briefed on investigations, told Reuters.

That would appear to rule out sudden catastrophic mechanical failure, as it would mean the plane flew approximately 350 miles at least after its last contact with air traffic control, although its transponder and other tracking systems were off.

A non-military source familiar with the investigations said the report was one of several theories and was being checked.

At the time it lost contact with civilian air traffic control, the plane was roughly midway between Malaysia’s east coast town of Kota Bharu and the southern tip of Vietnam, flying at 35,000 feet. REUTERS

Were there challenges in constructing a narrative as a documentary?

Yes. And we were also trying to get some action scenes in it, stuff like fights and special effects and let people improvise.

But it also frees you up for things. ... We wrote a script, but we didn’t show it to any of the actors. Because when people try to act like they’re in a documentary, I feel like you can tell.

How much of that original script is the same as what you ended up with?

That’s a great question and I don’t know. I would be interested to see that, to see how similar they are. But I haven’t ever compared them. I haven’t looked at the script since.

Were there any vampire elements or cliches you wanted to avoid referencing?

We’ve got “Twilight” references in it, which I kind of regret.

While we were filming it, the last “Twilight” movie was coming out and we wanted to get a shot of them taking down the “Twilight” poster as Nick is getting over being a vampire, saying this vampire trend of the teens has gone again and you have to wait for the next one.

Interview. Ralph Fiennes talks about doing comedy for Wes Anderson in “The Grand Budapest Hotel.”

Ralph Fiennes isn’t often called to do comedy. It’s a shame, as “The Grand Budapest Hotel” proves it’s one of his many talents. The latest from Wes Anderson stars Fiennes as an alternately snooty and juvenile concierge accused of murder in the lead-up to World War II. This meant finding a way to strut his stuff with a director famous for meticulous detail.

Apparently Wes Anderson wrote the part for you. How do you handle that when he approaches you for the role?

I think the fact that he wrote [the part] for me emerged recently. He said, “When I wrote this I thought of you,” but it didn’t quite have the pressure of “I’m writing this for you.”

It’s flattering and great, but I still go, “What bit of me did you see?”

His writing is very precise.

Is there wiggle room once actors come in?

One of the things that I wanted

to do with Wes is find d out where [the role] would be pitched. I think hink at first I approached it with too much affectation and an “overEnglishy” slightly forced diction. And he said, “No, no, no, relax that. It should be closer to your voice.” I think I knew what he meant. But sometimes he wanted me to push it back again. There’s a dial, and sometimes he’d say, “Let’s have it more affected,” or to make it a little more flamboyant.

What is it that attracts actors to Anderson, especially given how stylized his films are?

I think the actors like what the challenge is. You realize quickly that there’s a challenge in the delivery of the lines and the rhythm and often it’s connected to the camera moves.

The challenge is to keep that spirit of likeness and at the same time you got to hit your mark. He wants the actors to invent and to breathe life into what he’s written. So he has the choreography mapped out, and all the actors know that.

Part of the delight is trying to get it right and keep it seemingly spontaneous.

Hitting the books Anderson made up his own country, but it’s inspired by real nations in mid-Europe.

Did you do research?

I knew a bit about [WWII-era Europe] from another film I did, called “Sunshine.” ... This was completely different.

Wes gave me this book [“The World of Yesterday” by Stefan Zweig], which he says in

the credits gave him a lot of inspiration for the feeling of this. It’s a brilliant book. It’s a Viennese-Jewish intellectual that’s witnessing the shift to the rise of fascism. A very disturbing, heart-breaking book. That was my required reading. Also, “Beware of Pity,” another novel by Stefan Zweig.

Besides expanding his burgeoning interiors brand into the world of fashion — including a recent collaboration with Toms — he’s opening his 27th boutique, in Boston at The Street in Chestnut Hill. We caught up with the iconic designer to talk home trends, key apartment updates and where to find good vintage in the Hub.

Real estate. Government attempts to replace Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac The leaders of the U.S. Senate Banking Committee on Tuesday outlined plans for legislation to wind down government-owned mortgage financiers Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac that they said would continue to provide access to long-term, fixed-rate mortgages.

Committee Chairman Tim Johnson, a Democrat, and Sen. Mike Crapo, the panel’s top Republican, announced the agreement after working for months to bridge a partisan divide with the hope of moving legislation this year.

Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, which own or guarantee 60 percent of all U.S. home loans, provide a steady source of mortgage funds by buying loans from lenders and packaging them into securities they sell to investors.

Their central role in housing finance led the government to bail them out to the tune of $187.5 billion when they ran into trouble amid the financial crisis of 2007-2009.

Cyber cooking. IBM’s Watson evolves from trivia master to chef In another move toward our eventual enslavement by robots, computers can now whip up delicious culinary delights.

IBM’s Watson, who conquered the world of game shows with a standout performance on “Jeopardy!”, has turned its cold, unfeeling eye to the culinary arts.

Scientists created a tasteful algorithm that allows Watson to put innovative spins on food from around the globe. So far

it has created ceviche fish and chips and Vietnamese apple kebabs, among others. Researchers say Watson designs recipes lowly human chefs haven’t thought of by analyzing ingredients on a molecular level.

And it’s not just speculative food science. IBM set up a food truck in Austin, Texas, to show off the computer-generated grub as part of SXSW, open until Tuesday.

Polyfauna is pure texture, with little but mind-clearing escape. It essentially just is, and for a band who no longer have anything to prove, that’s a step in the right direction.

When it comes to colorectal cancer — which comprises colon cancer and rectal cancer — not all tumors are created equal.

As with new developments in cancer research in general, the big news in treatment is genetic sequencing: defining the biology of a tumor and tailoring targeted treatment, rather than the old one-pill-fits-all approach.

“Precision medicine is the buzzword,” says Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center’s Dr. Rona Yaeger, a colorectal cancer researcher with the American Cancer Society. “Already there are new drugs in clinical trials that will come on

the market soon.”

With precision medicine and improved surgery techniques, doctors are able to more accurately target tumors.

The result is less treatment for colorectal cancer patients.

“We’re now understanding that we’ve been overtreating, and we don’t always need all that chemotherapy and radiation,” explains Yaeger. “Radiation in particular is something we want to avoid if possible, especially in young people, because one of the possible side effects is infertility.”

Young people? Colorectal cancer is often thought of as an older person’s disease. Yaeger says that the average age of colorectal cancer patients is 70, but that the incidence of colon cancer is increasing in those 25-50.

“That’s what we’re seeing,” she says.

“The problem is that in younger people, colorectal cancer is more likely to be advanced.

Young people do not seek treatment until they present with symptoms, such as bloody stool or a change in bowel movement. With young people, it’s beyond a polyp.”

Polyps are pre-cancerous ruptures in the bowel wall that are detected in the course of colonoscopy exams and simply removed. Colonoscopies — during which patients are asleep and can head home that same day — are an effective tool in preventing

cancer. They’re usually given at age 50 or above, unless there’s family history of colorectal cancer. “It’s still our best tool for preventing fatalities overall,” says Yaeger.

Despite treatment advances, prevention is still key for anyone. Two ways to slash your risk? You’ve heard them before: a healthy (specifically highfiber) diet and regular exercise.

“A large BMI is known to affect all cancers,” says Yaeger.

Former Bruins center Peverley recovering Former Bruins center and current Dallas Star Rich Peverley underwent tests at UT Southwestern St. Paul Hospital Tuesday following a frightening incident in Monday night’s Blue Jackets-Stars game in Dallas. Peverley collapsed on the Stars bench in the first period after suffering what was described as a “cardiac event.”

Stars general manager Jim Nill told ESPNDallas. com that Peverley “has been communicating with his friends and teammates and is ‘extremely grateful for all of the prayers and support.’

“The focus of all the testing and monitoring is being dedicated to finding the cause of the event and a long-term solution to rectify the problem,” Nill told ESPN. Peverley was operated on prior to the start of the 2013-14 season to repair an irregular heartbeat.

The incident Monday night became so serious that the Blue Jackets and Stars game was postponed.

“When he dropped it was red alert,” Stars head coach Lindy Ruff told reporters. METRO

Edelman will test waters of free agency NFL. The Patriots will now have to scratch and claw if they want to keep their leading receiver from 2013.

The Patriots reportedly gave Julian Edelman a 4 p.m. deadline Tuesday to re-sign, but the slot receiver didn’t wait that long to break the news that he will test the free agent waters.
