Hillary Clinton heads to Boston this week Former Senator and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is set to visit Massachusetts on Wednesday amid continuing speculation that she may make another bid for the presidency in 2016. Clinton is the keynote speaker at a Simmons College women’s leaders conference at the Seaport World Trade Center. “As an advocate for women and girls, she has inspired millions of women to reach their full potential. Simmons is deeply honored to host such an exemplary role model,” Simmons President Helen G. Drinan said in a statement. METRO Untimely death

A student studying in a joint Harvard and MIT medical program has died, her family told the school, but little information has been released about her death. Eliana Hechter was a first-year student studying in the Harvard-MIT Health Sciences and Technology program, according to a letter posted on MIT’s website. The letter, posted Friday, said Hechter’s family notified the school of her death on Thursday. Hechter, a Rhodes scholar, also studied at the Broad Institute in Cambridge, where she worked on medical and population genetics, according to her website. METRO
Heat takes its toll on runners during the 116th Boston Marathon. / BRIAN WALTERS, METRO
Forging ahead. Runners from all walks of life will propel from the Boston Marathon starting line this morning. For more than a century, the Boston Marathon has been an event centered around sportsmanship, endurance and athleticism, but there’s no denying the face of the renowned race has been changed forever. Today, millions will watch as thousands of runners, some elite, some first-timers, push themselves along the famous 26.2-mile route. Runners have not only picked themselves up and dusted themselves off following the tragic events of last year, they have rallied in spirit. “After the bombings last year, we all felt vulnerable, not only as citizens, but as runners,” said Brian Metzler, editor-in-chief of Competitor magazine. “The act of running road races has been an expression of freedom. That’s still the case, but last year opened a lot of eyes.” That’s not all bad, accord-
ing to Metzler, who points to the massive outpouring of participation this year. More than 35,660 official participants are expected to tackle today’s race. “There was much more interest in qualifying for Boston over the past year,” said Metzler. “Even the half-marathon numbers were up; running has continued to soar. It would be much worse if the numbers went down.” The immense starting field size, which is the largest since the 1996 centennial marathon, begs questions of whether runners today will be hindered by cramped roads and crowds. “Because the [Boston Athetic Association] has been through this before with the centennial, they know what it takes to pull off a big race,” Metzler added. “Certainly it’s going to be a bigger organizational endeavor — but as far as runners go, I don’t think they’ll feel too much of

an impact.” In the opinion of Richard Johnson, curator of The Sports Museum, last year’s bombing changed the race “not a bit.” “I think it’s the world that has changed, not the race,” Johnson said. “The Boston Marathon is the event of the year here. What happened last year makes the marathon all the more important as a refuge, a symbol of all that’s good about sports and community.” “I don’t think the world is ever going to go back to normal — not only after the events of a year ago, but of 9/11,” he added. “It’s part of the larger world — the larger world intruded upon the sanctity of the Boston Marathon. I think it will now be even more precious to us, as will any communal event.” MORGAN ROUSSEAU @MetroMorgan

Brutal discovery. Missing since 2013, 5-year-old Jeremiah Oliver found dead The body of a missing Fitchburg boy who disappeared while his care was being overseen by a state child welfare agency was found off of a highway in Sterling on Friday, authorities said. The body of a boy matching the height and weight of 5-year-old Jeremiah Oliver was found off of Interstate 190, according to the Worcester district attorney’s office. On Saturday, authorities positively identified the body as Jeremiah’s, but said a full autopsy was not yet complete, according to The Globe. It was not immediately clear if the boy’s mother and her boyfriend, already in jail, would face more charges. The Worcester DA’s office also added that Jeremiah’s body was found Friday morn-

ing about 40 feet from the highway wrapped in a blanket and suitcase-like material. Jeremiah’s disappearance, which wasn’t reported until December 2013, although he hadn’t been seen since Sep-
tember, sparked a criminal investigation and multiple examinations of the state’s Department of Children and Families. In January, Gov. Deval Patrick said the case was an opportunity to “rethink and reinvigorate” the state’s child welfare agency. The state auditor released a report last month that highlighted management deficiencies at the agency. Three DCF employees have been fired since it was revealed that Jeremiah could not be found and the social worker assigned to his case hadn’t visited his family since April 2013. DCF Commissioner Olga Roche has come under fire, but Patrick has defended her. MICHAEL NAUGHTON

The team, as well as the scholarship fund in her name, was formed by Richard Campbell, a UMass trustee who is not related to her. Middleweight. Professional boxer Rubin ‘Hurricane’ Carter dies at 76 Former U.S. professional boxer Rubin “Hurricane” Carter, who spent 19 years in prison for murder before being released after it was determined he did not get a fair trial, died on Sunday at the age of 76, according to his friend and caretaker John Artis. Carter was considered a folk hero by many and was immortalized in film and song. He had been battling prostate cancer for nearly three years, Artis said. He died at home in Toronto, where he had been living since he was released from prison in 1985. “Those who are wrongfully incarcerated lost a champion,” Artis said. “He dedicated his life to helping the people that need the same kind of assistance that we needed, who have been wrongfully

That arrest, his imprisonment and the ultimately successful battle to free him are immortalized in the 1975 Bob Dylan song “Hurricane” and the 1999 film of the same name, which starred Denzel Washington as Carter. REUTERS

At least three people were killed in a gunfight in the early hours of Sunday near a Ukrainian city controlled by proRussian separatists, shaking an already fragile international accord that was designed to avert a wider conflict. The incident triggered a war of words between Moscow and Ukraine’s Western-backed government, with each questioning the other’s compliance with the agreement, brokered last week in Geneva, to end a crisis that has made Russia’s ties with the West more fraught than at any time since the Cold War.

The separatists said armed men from Ukraine’s Right Sector nationalist group had attacked them. The Right Sector denied any role, saying Russian special forces were to blame.
The deaths were the first in armed clashes in eastern Ukraine since the Geneva accord was signed on Thursday. Failure of the Geneva agreement could bring more bloodshed in eastern Ukraine. “The Easter truce has been violated,” the Russian foreign ministry said in a statement. “This provocation ... testifies to the lack of will on the part of the Kiev authorities to rein in and disarm nationalists and extremists.” Ukraine’s SBU security service accused Moscow agents of faking a “cynical provocation” at Slaviansk and the foreign ministry hit back, reproaching Russia for rushing to judgment. “The Russian side must be reminded about their obligations under the Geneva agreement to bring all necessary influence to bear on separatists to clear illegally held buildings, unblock roads, lay down arms and prevent any bloodshed,” it said. EA A EARTH DAY PREVIEW
WHY JOIN ME TO PROTECT OUR CLIMATE? BECAUSE IT’S WORTH IT! I’m not too big to admit that climate change terrifies me. These days I’ve had to wonder whether the natural systems that we rely on to sustain life on this planet will keep working into my son’s generation and his children’s generations beyond that. What frightens me most is not the science — it’s political inaction. The world’s scientists have warned that we have a finite amount of time to save our climate, and yet we still don’t have the political will needed for massive action. So what do we do? How do we fight this feeling of powerlessness and make any kind of impact on one of the biggest challenges of our time? This Earth Day, my recommendation may surprise you. On Earth Day, of all days, it’s time to remember why this planet is worth saving in the first place. I’m as urban as any New Yorker, but I’ve always loved nature. It’s not just because we need clean air, water
Opinion
CHRIS NOTH LETTERS@METRO.US In an exclusive op-ed for Metro, Chris Noth shares his passion for Earth Day (which takes place this year on Tuesday). He writes: “Nature fuels our art. Nature feeds our spirit.” Read Noth’s thoughts on Earth Day, his fear of climate change and how he hopes the perseverance of the American people will help us affect real change.

and a stable climate to live, but also because nature gives us poetry. Nature fuels our art. Nature feeds our spirit. For me, it’s always been trees. They are the perfect symbol of resilience, and committing to protecting them is a commitment to stand for something that should last long after we do. Whenever I lose hope, I find myself rereading Robert Frost’s poem, “The Sound of Trees.” When it
comes to climate change, trees are also one of the most important things to protect. That’s why I will always support groups like Rainforest Action Network, which dedicate their efforts to protecting our forests and making sure we don’t allow big business to destroy the beauty of this planet for profit. For you, maybe it’s not the trees. Maybe it’s the ocean, maybe it’s a particular animal or maybe it’s the smile on your
kid’s face when he or she gets to play outside. The bad news is, we’re seeing a climate tipping point that will impact all of us. But I believe there is no tipping point for American perseverance, for finding the will to get to work despite the odds. If you also believe the landscape of this country is too beautiful and too important to lose, then join me this Earth Day. It’s time to do more — together.

You’re right Miley, it’s the “wackiest 4/20 ever.”
News broke late last week that “X-Men” and “The Usual Suspects” director Bryan Singer is being sued by a man who accused Singer of molesting him in the 1990s when he was a teenager. The lawyer of 30-year-old Michael Egan said he’s filing three more lawsuits today, alleging that three other Hollywood insiders participated in the sexual abuse of Egan, reports PerezHilton.com. However, Singer says he wasn’t even in L.A. or Hawaii, the places his accuser says the incidents took place at the time of the allegations. Sources say the director plans to counter-sue. Egan says Singer gave him alcohol when he was 15 and offered him a movie role. The claim then says that Singer, who is openly gay, performed a sex act on the boy and allegedly forced him to do the same. Singer’s team calls the lawsuit “absurd,” but the director has canceled press appearances for his upcoming movie, “X-Men: Days of Future Past.” Former Disney actor Matthew Smith is speaking out in support of Singer, saying the two were very close when he was a teenager and he never laid a hand on him.

It’s no small thing to lead by example. In her book, “Lead Positive: What Highly Effective Leaders See, Say and Do,” Kathryn Cramer extols the benefits of her “asset-based thinking” process, by which leaders carefully make their underlings feel appreciated, listened to and valued. We asked Cramer for her advice on how to keep your sanity intact and a smile on your face in various uncomfortable work situations. How can someone cope with being miserable at work?

When you’re in a work situation and it’s not fitting, you’re not as productive and you might be bored. The first thing is not to wait for anyone else to rescue you or change your situation. You need to think of yourself as leading your life and your career. You’re the one. Being able to seek out counsel and advice from trusted peers and mentors is always a good thing to do, as well. What is the thought process behind changing jobs? Sit tight until you feel you have the idea, or the kernel of the idea of what you could change. You can vote with your feet and leave the job altogether, but you need to have a place to land. You have to think of results: What happens if you stay, and what are the options
if you leave? How can managers inspire their teams to do better? A client we had recently was running a call center and the people working were bored and unhappy. So they actually interviewed people and asked them, “What would make a significant positive difference in coming to work?” The top thing they suggested was exploring the “why” behind the “what” — supervisors were explaining what they wanted the team to do, but not why they wanted to do it. Making that simple shift helped the call center people feel like they were part of the action. JULIA FURLAN @juliastmi

When giving feedback, it’s always best in person. / WAVEBREAK MEDIA The three rules
Face to face is best The best feedback is in person. Having another human being briefly applaud your behavior is so rare and powerful. If it comes from somebody you respect and admire, it’s even more powerful.
Over the phone is OK The second best way to give feedback is by phone, because the person can hear the intonation in your voice. Your voice is like a highlighter: It helps the person feel the essence of how you feel or why you’re saying something.
Everybody hates email People have a negativity bias, and so they get into a skeptical mode when they read their emails, or they’re irritated because there are too many of them. If an email delivers positive feedback, at best we receive it and take it for granted and don’t give it the proper weight. The truth is, it just doesn’t fit in the same way as by voice or in person. You probably have gotten a couple hundred emails a day, and that one just goes by the wayside with all the rest of them.

The real Boston Bruins stopped by TD Garden on Easter Sunday and walked away with a 4-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings in Game 2 of their first-round series. Few are sure who those imposters in black and gold were that showed up in Game 1, but now the series is tied, 1-1, with the teams going to Detroit starting on Tuesday for Games 3 and 4. Four different Bruins scored goals Sunday and Tuukka Rask made 34 saves while Boston’s power play added two goals and the penalty kill unit was four-forfour. “We tried to do the simple things,” said Bruins defenseman Johnny Boychuk when asked about any adjustments from Game 1 to Game 2. “We’re not trying to complicate it. key to the game. When we play that style, it gives us more room to operate.” Two of the more unlikely Bruins gave them an early 2-0 lead in the first period with their first career playoff goals. Justin Florek took advantage of a terrible clearing attempt by Detroit goaltender Jimmy Howard (25 saves), then Reilly Smith was able to put in a rebound on the man advantage. Detroit battled back with a much stronger second period, where it outshot Boston, 136, and the Red Wings cut it to 2-1 on Luke Glendening’s first career postseason goal (a fluky bounce that went off his body). Milan Lucic’s goal with 1:44 left in the second was huge for Boston as it totally swung the momentum back in the home team’s favor. The strike came on the same shift where he took a hard spill into the boards, which he said he required stitches for on his foot. Zdeno Chara’s net-front presence enabled Boston to seal it with another powerplay goal early in the third. RICH SLATE @RichSlate

The Orioles’ Wei-Yin Chen (2-1, 4.76 ERA) will square off against Clay Buchholz (0-1, 5.51 ERA) on the mound. Buchholz has had solid back-to-back outings since being knocked around in his

The Sox haven’t played the O’s on Patriot’s Day since 2009, a 12-1 victory, in which Dustin Pedroia, David Ortiz and Mike Lowell had multiple RBIs. MATT BURKE
