Lawmakers: DCF commish should resign amid deaths Taking heat. More lawmakers are calling on the head of the state’s child welfare agency to step down. Massachusetts House Speaker Robert DeLeo and Senate President Therese Murray on Monday called for the resignation of the Department of Children and Families commissioner, pointing to the recent deaths of three children under DCF care and apparent mismanagement within the agency.

Gov. Deval Patrick, who has defended DCF Commissioner Olga Roche, expressed his own lack of confidence in the agency after two new child deaths were reported over the weekend. “[Roche] has some questions to answer for me,” Patrick said following DeLeo and Murray’s calls that Roche immediately step down to make way for more competent leadership. “My confidence in that whole organization has been rattled. The question is how do we get to the solutions. I’m not confident that [firing Roche] is an adequate solution, but she has some questions to answer for me,” Patrick told reporters.

Quoted

“We are experiencing a serious crisis regarding the safety of our children and we need real leadership now.” Murray

DCF spokesperson Cayenne Isaksen said Roche met with Patrick Monday afternoon. ‘The governor is reviewing the information provided to him in that conversation … to assess the appropriate next steps for the department and the families it serves,”

Isaksen said. One-month-old Aliana Lavigne was found dead in a Grafton apartment earlier this month, two days after social workers discovered a fax police had sent to them a week before. Another infant — 2-week-old Bailey Irish — died on Saturday after her family missed a scheduled DCF visit the day before. On April 18, the body of a missing Fitchburg 5-year-old, Jeremiah Oliver, was found along an interstate in Sterling. The boy had been missing since September, though his disappearance wasn’t reported until December. A review found that

social workers failed to make required family visits and properly report on DCF’s contact with Oliver’s family. A visibly frustrated DeLeo told reporters on Monday, “Quite frankly, I’m angered. I’m very much angered to see this continuing to happen. “It shows to me complete mismanagement on behalf of DCF. We have to take strong action. We can’t wait until the end of the year. We can’t wait for a new governor,” DeLeo said. MORGAN ROUSSEAU @MetroMorgan

Pena’s case is a matter of public record, and he could face penalties that an adult would face for the same crimes. Authorities said Pena had stopped going to school after being arrested for fighting. On Feb. 7, while his mother was outside, Pena approached his brother and allegedly squeezed the trigger of a gun as the boy played a video game. Authorities said Pena told investigators he thought the gun wasn’t loaded because he removed the magazine. However, a round was still in the chamber. Authorities said they are still investigating how Pena obtained the gun. MICHAEL NAUGHTON

Attorney: Oliver’s mother can’t aid in her defense A defense attorney for the mother of a 5-year-old Fitchburg boy who was found dead along a Sterling highway said she is “substantially unable to participate in her own defense” because of psychological problems.

A Mattapan teen faces a longer jail sentence after being indicted for allegedly accidentally shooting his younger brother, killing him. Juanly Pena, 14, shot his 9-year-old brother, Jan Marcos Pena, inside their home in February, authorities said. The teen pleaded not guilty during his arraignment Monday as a youthful offender instead of a juvenile. He was indicted earlier this month on charges of manslaughter and illegal gun possession. Typically, juvenile cases are heard out of the public realm and the names of offenders are not released. However, because of the youthful offender indictment,

I wonder why he’s here,” he wrote cheekily. Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford (Do I really have to explain to you who they are in relation to the “Star Wars” franchise?) have also been spotted in London just as Abrams’ first installment of a new “Star Wars” trilogy is about to begin shooting at nearby Pinewood Studios.

One of the questions about it is whether the filmmakers knew what they were doing. I would argue that they did. I know Elizabeth Berkley is a tough element to reconcile. I saw it recently, and people who had never seen it before were saying they didn’t think she was that bad. That was a revelation to me — that there were people who were seeing it for the first time and they didn’t even think the one seemingly obvious bad thing about it was very bad at all.

What was your first time watching ‘Showgirls’ like? I saw it in theaters when it came out. I had to sneak in. The reason I wanted to see it at 14 was I wanted to see why it got zero stars from The Globe and Mail. That probably had something to do with how I watched it the first time: Instead of being skeptical of the movie, I was skeptical of the negativity.

A lot of the press for ‘Showgirls’ remains it’s-sobad-it’s-good. I wish I’d read more things about “Showgirls” that said what I think about it, which is that it’s well-crafted, and that clashes with how craven some of the dialogue and characters are. Instead you just read reviews of people saying how inept it is and comparing it to “Valley of the Dolls.” MATT PRIGGE

7

Times change

In defense. Critic Adam Nayman argues for the craft in ‘Showgirls’ When it came out, “Showgirls” was a punching bag. It still is — it’s just been reclaimed as a bad cinema classic, to be watched a la “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.” But there exists a wave, peopled by J. Hoberman, Jim Jarmusch and Jacques Rivette, who argue that it’s a self-aware satire. To this posse, add the critic and scholar Adam Nayman, whose book “It Doesn’t Suck: Showgirls” makes a convincing and enjoyable case for its sneaky and subversive craft.

BBOOKS

Everyone’s a critic

Elizabeth Berkley isn’t the best part of “Showgirls,” darlin’. / MGM

Even if one thinks ‘Showgirls’ is bad cinema, it’s not your typical bad cinema. You see a film like “The Room” and nobody would say, “Oh, that’s not that bad, the acting isn’t that bad, the camera angles aren’t that bad.” This to me is a little closer to “Ishtar.” I think that’s a good film too. It’s

interesting to see how people watching that for the first time now see it as opposed to people stuck in that climate in 1987, when the film was a punchline. I hate the mentality that something is clearly bad because everyone says so. “Showgirls” is a really terrible victim of that. You’d be hardpressed, almost 20 years later, to find a critic who would stick to their original consensus.

TRAVEL

Travel. Here are six tips for living out of two suitcases.

8

Two suitcases only

Three years ago, Lynne Martin was “living the California dream … in a darling house,” as she describes it, when she had an epiphany: The author of “Home Sweet Anywhere” wanted to give it all up to travel the world. “I finally got up the courage to say, ‘I’m going to be 70 pretty soon, and there are so many places I want to see.’ … [My husband] Tim said, ‘How do we do that? Just leave all this behind?’, and I said, ‘Yeah, pretty much,’” recalls Martin. Four months later, the Martins sold their house and hit the road with just two suitcases and two computers. The Martins have traveled throughout Europe and South America, and they have no plans to settle down. They spend a month or longer in each destination so they can truly explore places and live like locals. Martin, now 73, shares her pearls of wisdom on giving it all up in the name of

Livin’ la vida local

Get rid of what you don’t need The Martins need to be ready to leave every few months, so they only carry two suitcases. “Our rule is if you buy something, something else has to go out,” says Martin. “Sometimes we even rent clothes.” Martin admits that it means you have to get accustomed to wearing the same clothes over and over again. “We want to burn our clothes when we get home,” she says. The Martins also have a storage unit in the U.S. so they can swap out their things when they return. LYNNE AND TIM MARTIN

Do the math Martin says she and her husband crunched the numbers on the costs of living in their California house compared to

living on the road. Much to their surprise, they learned that living on the road was slightly cheaper. She says it’s vital to make sure you can afford your trips. “Do those calculations first,” says Martin. “You certainly don’t want to spend your capital. We have an investment portfolio that we don’t touch.” Martin says that she and her husband only use their Social Security and profits from their investments and selling their home to travel.

Live like a local The Martins are careful not to act like high rollers on vacation; most importantly, they

stay in vacation rentals instead of hotels. “We keep a refrigerator full of food, and most of the time we eat at home,” says Martin. “The difference is we’re in thrilling places like Paris or Portugal or Italy.” Staying in residential neighborhoods keeps them inconspicuous and out of touristy areas.

Plan ahead Satisfying your wanderlust doesn’t mean you should be reckless. You don’t want to be stranded without a place to stay; you also want to make sure you’re sticking to your budget. “We know pretty much six months in advance where we’re going to go

because we’re too mature to wing it,” Martin says. “The last time we were on the road was for nine months. We were wellorganized before we left.”

Take a day off Martin says she and her husband would not enjoy their travels nearly as much if they didn’t take off a few days once in a while to relax. “When you know you have a month to explore a place, there isn’t this sense of urgency,” she says. “We learned that we have to take time on the road to regroup. We have to spend days at home to completely cocoon and rest up.” Martin says doing this helps them recharge.

Small talk with small people New book. What is the Say what you see best way to develop If there’s one technique that will boost your child’s speech, your baby’s language it’s “say what you see.” With skills? It’s simple — this strategy, which is all about learning through play, you talk to them.

Give reasons to communicate Mothers often try to pre-empt their baby’s every need, but by doing this your child no longer has a reason to communicate with you. The next time your toddler points furiously at some cookies, pretend you don’t understand and offer him or her a piece of fruit instead. Chances are that he or she will make his or her desire for a cookie very clear!

Making the effort

Enjoy small talk time every day New research has confirmed how important it is to talk to your baby from birth. At a bare minimum, you should spend at least 10 minutes talking to your child every day. Of course, if you can spend more time talking with your little one, then do! It’s about quality, not quantity. One-on-one conversations with babies and toddlers have been proven time and time again to help develop their language skills. But as anyone who has stared deep into the eyes of a baby and attempted a conversation with them knows, some guidance on what to chat about would be beneficial. That’s where journalists and authors Nicola Lathey and Tracey Blake come in. Their new book, “Small Talk: Simple Ways to Boost Your Child’s Speech and Language Development from Birth to Age Four,” is filled with simple and fun activities to encourage and promote engagement with your baby. Here, Blake shares her tips on how to get your baby talking.

you provide gentle running commentary on what your child is doing at that moment. Follow your child’s lead, observe him or her closely to see what interests him or her, comment on what’s happening, and pause to allow time for the child to respond. This powerful technique helps your child link what he or she hears to what he or she is doing.

Toddler birthday party blues Keeping it real. Planning a party for someone who isn’t old enough to remember it should not be this hard. We’re having a birthday party in Prospect Park in Brooklyn this weekend for my son Sam, who is turning 2. Why am I freaking out? Let me count the ways.

1

I sent out an email about it rather than mailing themed invitations. I’ve literally laid awake at night thinking about

this and about how sad my etiquette-loving, Southern mother must be about how her daughter turned out to be such a Godless monster.

2

In that email, I pretended that my husband and I were throwing such a super laid-back party that there was no need to even RSVP. And now I don’t know how many cupcakes I need to make.

3

I didn’t invite my family/ in-laws until the last minute, figuring they wouldn’t make the several-hour-long trek to just hang out in a park. They are also helping with our upcoming move; two treks to New York is too much. I was right — they can’t make it. Even though I understand 100 percent why, I’m a sad-faced emoticon.

I walk because I want all children to have the nutrition they need to achieve their full potential. Dr. Ronald Kleinman—Physician in Chief, MassGeneral Hospital for Children and Board Chair, Project Bread

I only invited friends-withkids and super-close friends of ours, even though I have plenty of single friends. Do I invite my single friends? I mean, who in their right mind would want to go to a 2-year-old’s birthday party in the park in the middle of the

This is a stock image, not Sam. Sam is MUCH cuter. One more reason

Thanks, no thanks Even though I said “no gifts,” people are going to bring gifts, and I’ll have to send thank-you notes. I’m moving my entire life at the end of the month, and work is insane. I will never, ever find the time to send a thank-you note. Everyone will then forever think I’m an ungrateful mooch.

afternoon? But — and here is where the crazy really sets in — maybe they think I’m purposely excluding them because they don’t have kids. Even though the only reason I am inviting those friends with kids is because we’re all in this special hell together and

/ PHOTODISC

I know they have nothing else going on. Or, what if I invite them and then see them a few weeks later posting a snarky essay to Facebook about the horrors of being invited to a toddler’s birthday when you don’t have children of your own, and how it sucked to spend money on a present even though I specifically mentioned in the shoddy e-mail invite (not mailed, themed ones) that I said no gifts? I’m getting worked up just typing this, folks. However, I was struck with a happy thought this morning as I was taking Sam to the playground. I clutched my husband’s arm in excitement, and my eyes glittered at the thought: “Maybe it will rain.” DOROTHY ROBINSON @DorothyatMetro dorothy.robinson@metro.us

B’s have shown vulnerability versus Montreal NHL. The Habs have served up a poison pill to the Bruins’ success over the past year. After the Bruins’ 3-0 Game 3 victory in Detroit a week ago, Boston fans felt quite comfortable. A series win felt like a formality; most in the Hub were asking things like, “Who’s next?” “Next” is a team that has been like spoked “B” kryptonite for over a year now. From March 3, 2013, to now, the Canadiens have won six of seven from the Bruins with their most notable win coming back on March 24 of this

year when they halted the B’s 12-game winning streak. For half-glass-full Bruins fans, the B’s had actually owned a five-game winning streak against the Canadiens prior to their recent slump. Montreal had been getting in the habit of resting starting goaltender Carey Price, who had a save percentage of .904 in the Habs’ sweep of the Lightning, against the Bruins in favor of backup Peter Budaj. Budaj may one day want to take up residence on Causeway Street as he is 5-0 with a .960 save percentage at TD Garden against the Bruins. But given the stakes, the Canadiens will likely rely mostly on Price. Price and the Bruins
