Late-night T equals boon for businesses Party time. Bars, cab companies and the T are all seeing an influx of customers.

It’s been about six weeks since the MBTA rolled out a one-year pilot program testing the success of late-night service hours on weekends, and although the night life community is waiting for more time to pass before declaring it a hit, many local bars and restaurants are happy with the results thus far.

“We need a longer period to really assess the total impact, but I’d say it’s gone somewhat as expected from our standpoint,” said Bob Luz, president of the Massachusetts Restaurant Association.

T officials said 72,057 people traveled on MBTA subways during late-night weekend hours in the first month of the program, which launched on March 28.

As a likely result, the city’s hospitality industry has seen an increase in sales “to some degree,” according to Luz. “Specifically, what they’re saying is it seems as if patrons are just staying out a little bit later because they have an alternative way to get around.

We’ve seen year-over-year increases, and we lapped out the Marathon effect, but when we line up the seven-week period some of them are seeing increases in sales,” said Luz. “It’s too soon to really call it a home run, but it’s certainly meeting employers’ needs.”

estimated 25 percent increase in late-night taxi rides, according to general manager Steve Sullivan.

“It’s increased business. I wasn’t expecting it either,” said Sullivan, who keeps hourly statistics on passenger trips.

“Now, with the extended hours, we’re getting about 160 calls per hour after 2 a.m., whereas before we’d usually see about 55 hourly calls,” Sullivan said, speculating that cabs may be picking up stragglers who were lured out with the intention of taking the T home, but opted for the convenience of a taxi instead.

“We thought maybe there would be a decrease in business because people would take the trains, but a lot of people may say they’ll take the T but when the time comes they’ll call a cab. Some people don’t want

to bother with public transportation,” Sullivan said, adding that he welcomes a permanent late-night program.

“Whoever came up with it should be given credit. The new mayor OKing it was tremendous,” he said.

It’s difficult to know whether the number of late-night partiers will climb into the summer, Luz said, as the city’s demographic shifts.

“We lose a lot of students who typically might be out late at night, and fill it in with a younger generation that comes home as well,” said Luz. “Summer in the city is a very busy part of the season with tourists. We think it’ll be a bigger win in the summer.”

Eyes are smiling: Boston, Belfast now sister cities Across the pond.

Boston Mayor Marty Walsh signed an agreement.

Boston’s first Irish mayor in 20 years has increased the Hub’s ties to the Emerald Isle.

Mayor Marty Walsh on Monday signed a “sister city” agreement with Belfast Lord Mayor Mairtin O Muilleoir.

Both cities will work to generate new initiatives to further economic, social, cultural and faith-based relationships, Walsh’s office said.

Boston’s Sister City program operates as an independent effort that relies on volunteers and contributions. It’s part of a national movement that started in the 1950s to build exchanges between Americans and people of other countries.

“We look forward to new beginnings with our ‘sister’ Belfast, as this formal agreement goes far beyond a declaration on ink on paper; it truly speaks to our historic connection, genuine ties and deeply linked heritage,” Walsh said in a statement.

Your books are translated into English. Do you feel like your American readers have a hard time getting all of the nuances?

How do you feel being a rock star prepared you to be a novelist?

You would think writing three verses and a refrain for a three-minute song isn’t much of a school for writing

500-page novels, but it’s more or less the same job. You have to find a way to trigger your listeners’ imagination and make them [read] the book and find out what the story is in the lyrics, because you can only give so much input through words.

Everyone calls you the next Stieg Larsson, but I heard you don’t like that comparison.

Do you think the Scandinavian crime trend has really just been invented by the media?

I think first and foremost what Scandinavian crime fiction has in common is that it’s written by a Swede, a Dane or a Norwegian.

Apart from that, it’s hard for me to see. When a book has a “Scandinavian light,” I don’t know what they’re talking about.

Stieg Larsson and I are both from Scandinavia, but I don’t think we’re similar as writers. He is more influenced by traditional Scandinavian crime writing back from the ’70s and ’80s with a political agenda, which was the tradition for Scandinavian crime novels. I’m probably more influenced by American crime fiction with hard-boiled detectives. ANDREA PARK

Canadiens force do-or-die Game 7 NHL. The Bruins couldn’t close out Montreal Monday night, falling 4-0 in Game 6.

In this recent championshiplevel era of Bruins hockey, one criticism you can make of the B’s is that they rarely make things easy on themselves.

Boston had the opportunity to close out Montreal Monday night up, but uncharacteristic miscues cost them Game 6, 4-0. With the loss, the B’s will face yet another Game 7, Wednesday at TD Garden (7 p.m., NBCSN).

The Bruins’ issues in Game 6 began early as Kevan Miller couldn’t get a good read on the puck coming off the boards, and his stumble

pulled Tuukka Rask out of position. It set up a gimme Montreal goal for Lars Eller at the 2:11 mark of the first period.

Montreal wing Max Pacioretty took advantage of more Bruins miscommunication around the net as he zoomed past a conservative Zdeno Chara and beat Rask low 15:24 into the second to give Montreal a 2-0 lead. Pacioretty was again in the scoring mix minutes later as he booted the puck off his skate over to Thomas Vanek, who found the net on a Habs power play.

The B’s had their moments Monday night, but as they’ve learned throughout the series it takes more than a few good looks at Carey Price to get the best of the Habs. Price finished with 25 saves.
