It’s an understatement to say that Tom O’Keefe has mastered the art of social media. O’Keefe has collected a Twitter following of more than 114,000 people under his handle @BostonTweet and regularly shares Boston buzz with both city dwellers and those whose love for the Hub transcends borders.

Metro sat down with the New York native to learn a little about the man behind the tweet and get the dirt on how he’s built his Twitter empire.

How was @BostonTweet born?

I used to work in the startup field in the late ’90s, and I was totally addicted to that unbelievable time. It was fun, cool, challenging. I had two startups in 2008, which sort of crumbled. That’s when I started @BostonTweet, as a last ditch effort to try not to work in an office ever again.

Twitter was pretty new. It was a couple of years old.

I was tweeting about local business during a downed economy, so it was about value in the city and where to go for cheap eats. I really thought it was going to be a ghost town in Boston, like the stuff you saw in 1920s. [@BostonTweet] grew from there.

How did you gather such a following?

I spent every single day for five years providing good content and knowing my demographics. There was no spike — maybe a little one during the [2013 Boston Marathon bombing], but I didn’t tweet that much about what was happening [outside of] really important information. I get about 100 followers a day, give or take.

If I do a giveaway, it’s about 200.

How many hours a day do you spend on social media?

I only spend between five and 10 minutes a day, not really a lot. I’m extremely selective. When I first started, I’d tweet about almost everything happening. It was overwhelming to try to keep up.

Do you think it’s a necessity for businesses to use social media?

Certainly business can make it without it. Most places in Chinatown are not on Twitter and they do really well.

And in the North End too, there are some old-school businesses and none of them are really on Twitter. Others are phenomenal at giving locations a really personal

touch [online], sharing when people get engaged at their restaurants and tweeting out food photos. You create a connection with them, which makes you want to come in and meet them.

What about public figures; do you think they have an obligation to be online?

Yeah I do. People like the mayor, the police commissioner and celebrities should use it, because you can hear directly from them, hear their voice. If Marty Walsh has something to say, he doesn’t need to call the press, he can say it right now.

Marty’s been doing really good with using Twitter and Facebook chats. He’s creating a visual of himself just to show that he is actually a real, living person.

What subjects are Bostonians most interested in?

It depends. The demo is really focused on the one in three population in Boston, people aged 20 to 34, who live in the city, and use the Red and Green lines. Stuff right now getting tons of attention is the late night MBTA service. When

I first started tweeting about the public pianos last July, the response was overwhelming.

I could tell it would be a massive hit. And the Cape Flyer train to Cape Cod has caught on. Some things are really duds, and you can see it’s not going to work because there’s no bite to it. It’s such a large audience, and it’s interesting because it gets an immediate reaction.

What’s your advice for people who want to grow their following?

I get that question a lot.

Every time I give my answer, they hate it. It’s really difficult. I can see why people give up on tweeting: if you’re talking and no one is listening.

But if people want a strong following on Twitter, or their blog, it’s about marketing strong content, and really focusing on a niche audience. @BostonTweet is for people who just have an interest in Boston. It’s tough to tell if they live in Boston, but I would say over 75 percent still live in the city the rest have a love and interest in Boston.

Tell me about your new #DownloadBoston initiative.

Most people don’t know all the startups based here. It’s not like you can walk by a new startup and see that it exists. It’s a super simple site [DownloadBoston.com] with the basic concept of trying to create awareness for Bostonbased startups. My goal is to work with local retailers, hotels, cafes and restaurants to put them front and center and get more national exposure. On a national scale, our [startups] are not covered like launches in D.C. I do have passion for the city. It’s a great place to live.

The great thing about local businesses is that the people who own them are usually there, and I think it’s a much better experience. It’s about keeping money local and keeping jobs local. The more in the city, the more people we hire, so it’s great.

Naming rights

Agency lists top baby names for Bay State in 2013 There are going to be a lot of kids named Benjamin and Emma starting kindergarten in about four years.

Earlier this month, the Social Security Administration released the list of the most popular

baby names in the nation for 2013. Nationally, Noah and Sophia were the most popular baby names.

In Massachusetts, Benjamin and Emma topped the list. It was the second consecutive year those two baby names were the most popular in the state.

Coming in second in Massachusetts were William and Olivia, and third most

popular were Jacob and Sophia.

Ryan and Michael rounded out the top five names for boys. Isabella and Ava were the fourth and fifth most popular names for girls in the Bay State, respectively.

MBTA. The bus was carrying 10 people, and eight were injured when it crashed in Newton.

It was a harrowing ride for several MBTA commuters Sunday morning when the bus they were riding on suddenly veered to the left, collided with a guardrail and crashed into some chain-link fencing leaving it partially hanging over the Massachusetts Turnpike.

The Route 57 bus crashed at about 7:35 a.m. in Newton, Transit Police said. It was brought completely back onto the road more than three hours later.

Traffic moving along I-90 westbound was backed up toward the Boston line as only one lane of traffic along the Pike was getting by.

cluding the driver. They suffered injuries that were not life-threatening, police said.

The bus was traveling on an overpass crossing above Interstate 90 in Newton Corner when the crash occurred.

There was never any threat of the bus falling off of the overpass, police and fire officials said. Crews from the Newton Fire Department chained a ladder truck to the back of the bus to secure it as a precaution.

Fire and tow truck crews used chains and several trucks to pull the bus back onto the roadway at about 10:45 a.m.

Transit Police are investigating the cause of the crash.

MassDOT officials were on scene inspecting the overpass.

Authorities closed the Newton Corner on-ramp to

the Pike for several hours while the crash was cleaned up, causing major delays.

Additionally, the right lane of the Pike underneath the crash was closed because of fallen debris.

Woman falls down elevator shaft at Fenway after game Investigation. Officials and police are trying to determine how the incident occurred.

A 22-year-old woman was seriously hurt when she fell down an elevator shaft at Fenway Park after the doors somehow opened.

The incident happened at about 11:15 p.m. following Friday night’s game against the Detroit Tigers, which was delayed because of the rain.

Fire crews were called to Gate B, near the intersection of Van Ness and Ipswich streets.

Somehow, one or both of the doors to the elevator opened on the fourth floor,

allowing the woman to fall down the shaft. She landed on the roof of an elevator that stopped on the second floor, according to the Boston Fire Department.

The power to the elevator was cut off to prevent it from moving while fire crews worked to reach the woman.

Firefighters stood on a chair and boosted themselves up to the roof of the elevator.

The woman was lowered through the hatch and taken to a hospital.

The Red Sox released a statement on Saturday afternoon about the incident.

“Various Red Sox personnel responded immediately and worked alongside the Boston Police Department, Boston Fire Department and

Emergency Medical Services to address the situation,” the Red Sox said.

Police and state officials are working to determine exactly how the incident happened.

Man with guns arrested near BU commencement A man who was allegedly carrying two guns near the Boston University commencement exercises was arrested on Sunday.

Andrea Massa, 28, of Marshfield, was arrested by Boston University police, according to Colin Riley, a BU spokesman. Massa was walking down Harry Agganis Way before 1 p.m., about the time the university’s commencement was expected to take place at nearby Nickerson Field.

Riley said Massa caught the attention of university police, who stopped him prior to a security checkpoint. Massa allegedly created a disturbance and was found to be in possession of two guns.

Massa is facing charges of carrying a firearm on school grounds, disorderly conduct and a civil charge for violating the terms of his firearm license. METRO

While in Cannes, former “Baywatch” babe Pamela Anderson revealed some very shocking secrets.

The Canadian bombshell was molested at 6, raped at 12 and gang raped in her teens. She shared

her story in front of 200 people at an event for her new animal charity. She revealed that a female baby-sitter molested her as a child and her brother’s friend raped her when she was a preteen. Godzilla vs. the time monster Evolution of a beast. There are more than two dozen official Godzilla films — that is, ones put out by Japan’s Toho Company, LTD. There is also a smattering of semi- or even non-official ones, including the American reboot out this weekend. Godzilla has largely stayed the same, with the occasional minor — and not-so-minor — variations. Here he is through his 60 years. MATT PRIGGE

The original, mean one Only a handful of times have filmmakers portrayed Godzilla realistically, seriously considering the impact a rampaging colossus would have on humanity. Indeed, it started out, in the 1954 original, doing just that.

Godzilla wasn’t just a fun toy concept; he was borne out of the pain of WWII, reflecting the anxieties that came from the Nuclear Age. Though dark and unpleasant, the American version softened the blow, recutting it to make it fun and adding Raymond Burr as an American journalist named Steve Martin.

The nice-ish one For his first four outings, Godzilla was a menace. By the fifth, 1964’s “Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster,” he had chilled out into a mere anti-hero, who usually battles or teams up with the likes of Rodan, Mothra (pictured) and Hedorah (aka the Smog Monster). He even had a cute kid: Minilla.

In these, the hulking, fat behemoth became a leaner fighting machine, all so his human players could more easily wrestle without falling down (or slipping on that tail). The good times ran through 1975’s “The Terror of Mechagodzilla.” Twenty-one years is not a bad run.

The one that meets Bambi

The North Korean one

The 1998 one

Godzilla’s influence quickly ran through the globe. In 1969 he was even one of the subjects of a classic amateur film. Marv Newland’s “Bambi Meets Godzilla” runs only a minute and a half, the majority of which shows a hand-drawn Bambi nibbling cutely on plants in a field.

Meanwhile its maker’s name occupies every single credit, burning up screentime. The meeting, when it comes, goes about as expected.

(There are two sequels, but neither was created by Newland.)

Having made waves (sorry) with “Jaws” jokes, “Saturday Night Live” milked Godzilla for yuks at least twice: as a guest of Baba Wawa (pictured) and in a spoof called “Kramer vs. Godzilla.”

“SCTV” got in on it too, disguising him as “Grogan” and giving him fangs that zigzagged across his mouth.

Voiced by John Candy, he was a more mild-mannered, thoughtful titan, who relaxed while being lightly grilled on a chat show by host Tim Ishimuni (Dave Thomas), only becoming angry when nervous guards shot at him.

So this happened: Kim Jong-Il, when he was merely the son of the ruler of North Korea, really liked Godzilla.

He forced Shin Sang-ok, a South Korean director he had kidnapped, to take a break from propaganda films to make a Godzilla rip-off. The result was 1985’s “Pulgasari,” in which a giant lizard-like monster who eats metal fights a feudal-era king who runs his land with an iron fist, and which is definitely nothing like North Korea.

Don’t laugh: Eightiesera Godzilla performer Kenpachiro Satsuma said he preferred it to Roland Emmerich’s 1998 version.

It’s amazing that it took more than 40 years for Hollywood to make its own Godzilla picture. The man for the job seemed to be Roland Emmerich, hot off the populist neo-disaster picture “Independence Day.” Unfortunately, Roland Emmerich is terrible, and his mega-budgeted “Godzilla” — whose tagline, “Size Matters,” led to many double entendre putdowns — took things either too lightly or too seriously. It even featured thin-skinned digs at Siskel and Ebert. The latter, in his 1½ star review, complained that he wasn’t even stomped on.

Long distance, after college

Post-grad life. A three-year email exchange between friends after college is immortalized in “Graduates in Wonderland.”

Jessica Pan and Rachel Kapelke-Dale were seniors at Brown when they made a pact to stay in constant contact, even though Pan was moving to Beijing and Kapelke-Dale was moving to New York.

Seven years later, the two have chronicled the best of their hilarious and occasionally heart-breaking emails in “Graduates in Wonderland.”

Did you feel you were able to grow together even though you were so far apart?

Pan: We went through the things every young woman goes through: looking for the right career and going through heartbreak, etc. I do think we grew together.

And now you both live in London?

Pan: We live like five blocks

away from each other and we see each other at least every week. ... When you’re in your 20s and live in another city, it’s such a gift to find out one of your best college friends lives there, too.

It must be nice.

Kapelke-Dale: We saw each other twice in five years, so to be together again — we were like, “Wow, this feels just like college.” We still felt as close as we did back then, if not closer.

Clean your screen Klosky says people should avoid sticking or taping things to their computer screens. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Post-its will sometime lose their stick, and then they will fall down.

They are also really distracting. When you are looking at your computer, you should be focused on the screen, not what is all around it,â&#x20AC;? says Klosky. So tear down those notes from your screen, and write the things

you need to remember in your notebook instead.

No piles There should never be piles on your desk, Klosky says. The moment you start a pile is the moment you are creating more work for yourself. You eventually have to going to deal with the piles. Piles create dust, and dust creates bacteria and germs, which are never good things in terms of organization.

A good tip for staying organized is partnering up with a colleague for a weekly organizing appointment, Klosky advises. That way you can help each other decide what needs to stay and, more importantly, what needs to go. It might be easier for your colleague to throw out the things that are in your way.

Make it a rule Suggest that your company send a weekly email encouraging employees to clean their work spaces. A message saying â&#x20AC;&#x153;Use the next 15-20 minutes for cleaning up your deskâ&#x20AC;? ensures that people will make time to get it done, as no one wants to come in early to clean.

Celtics’ 2014 draft targets It’s time for C’s fans to get excited about these highly touted prospects with the NBA Draft Lottery just one day away.

The Celtics didn’t sniff the postseason this year, of course, and instead the C’s have had their sights set on the 2014 offseason, with the NBA Draft the key part of it. As it stands, Boston has the fifth overall pick in the draft, but that could change on Tuesday night when the NBA lottery goes down. In short, Boston has a 33.4 percent chance at a top 3 pick, and a 10.3-percent chance at the No. 1 pick. However, they could pick as low as No. 8 if things go horribly wrong.

With that, let’s take a look at the players in the draft that the C’s may eventually get a chance at picking on June 26.

Joel Embiid

Andrew Wiggins

7-foot, freshman, Kansas — Embiid is the most interesting player in this draft for a few reasons.

First of all, he’s an athletic 7-footer will a ton of potential — and when those things go together, GMs start salivating. Secondly, coming from Cameroon, he really only picked up a basketball three years ago (explaining the potential).

The Celtics desperately need a center and Embiid would appear to be just what the doctor ordered.

6-foot-8, small forward, freshman, Kansas — Nobody had more hype going into the college basketball season than Wiggins, and perhaps that’s why it feels like he didn’t quite live up to it. Even so, Wiggins is a Top 3 pick in this year’s draft, and it’s easy to see why.

Physically, he’s the perfect size for his position — and will fill out in his first few years in the NBA. Wiggins, like all rookies, needs to polish his offensive game, but he always looks very dangerous in transition.

6-foot-6, point guard, Australia — Exum is a bit of a wild card in this draft. He’s certainly a top talent and will go high, but it’s hard for the general public to get a good read on him, simply because they haven’t seen much of him. Exum is bigger-than-average guard and extremely quick. He can get down the court in a blink of an eye, and his first step is a weapon. He’s big enough to play the shooting guard position, but has to improve his shot.

6-foot-8, small forward, freshman, Duke — Parker, at age 19, may be the most NBA ready out of all the top prospects this year. His potential is off the charts, and he can certainly score in bunches. He won’t wow you athletically — like, say, Embiid or Andrew Wiggins would — and his defense isn’t quite there yet. But Parker would fill the swingman void the Celtics have had since Paul Pierce was dealt last year, as Jeff Green just isn’t that guy.

6-foot-9, power forward, freshman, Kentucky — Randle is a strong power forward who can finish at the rim with a number of moves, either facing or with his back to the basket.

He isn’t much of an abovethe-rim player, but has good control down low and uses his big body to get to the rim.

Power forward isn’t really a need for Boston, however, as Jared Sullinger and Kelly Olynyk are already on the roster.

After dropping back-to-back series’ to the Twins and Tigers, the Red Sox look to climb back to the .500 mark this week as they open up a three-game set against Toronto at Fenway Park on Tuesday (7 p.m., NESN).

It is the Blue Jays’ first trip to Boston this season, though the Sox and Jays met in late April at the Rogers Centre with the Sox taking two-of-three.

The Jays are also hovering around the .500 mark in a tight AL East race that has all teams within 4.5 games of each other.

Chrome could skip Belmont There is the possibility that California Chrome, the winner of the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, may not race in the Belmont Stakes on June 7 if the horse is not allowed to wear nasal strips during the race, according to the horse’s trainer.

ESPN reported Sunday that a formal request from California Chrome’s trainer to allow the horse to wear the strips will be made Tuesday. If California Chrome does race, he will be shooting to become the first Triple Crown winner in 36 years. MATT BURKE

The Celtics immediately popped up as a possible destination for Love, and Yahoo Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski wrote Sunday the C’s and Lakers would be willing to trade away “high lottery picks” in the upcoming draft in a Love deal. MATT BURKE

Boatload of brains in Boston bullpen MLB. Craig Breslow and Burke Badenhop bump up the collective IQ of the Red Sox. The Red Sox currently own one of the better bullpens in the game as the group’s 3.00 ERA is good for second best in the American League and sixthbest in all of baseball. On top of their on-field excellence, the group also features off-field brilliance.

Craig Breslow, who was named one of the Top 20 smartest athletes by The Sporting News in 2010, has received a good amount of press, but there is also Burke Badenhop, a Bowling Green graduate who has co-written a book, as well as Andrew Miller and Chris Capuano, who attended the University of North Carolina and Duke, respectively.

“You tend to find more of those guys in the bullpen,” Badenhop said. “Nothing different, I’ve played with some smart guys before.”

Badenhop is the co-author of “Financial Planning For Your First Job,” which came out in 2011. The Boston reliever used his business and economics background at Bowling Green to write the foreword for one of his friends, Matthew Brandeburg, in a book that gives young adults financial planning advice.

“To still kind of keep your brain in academia a little bit, you know, helps,” said Badenhop.

As for Breslow, he excelled in the science world as in 2002 he graduated Yale with a B.A. in molecular biophysics and biochemistry.

Wicked smart Although Burke Badenhop didn’t go to an Ivy League school like Craig Breslow, he still feels as though he could keep up with his fellow relief pitcher in a brain battle.

Said Badenhop: “I’ve played with [current Twins outfielder] Sam Fuld. Sam went to Stanford and is more of a stats and numbers type guy, kind of like I am.

Breslow is a pretty smart guy though. I’m pretty impressed with what he’s done with his [Strike 3 charity Foundation], but I’d like to say I could hold my own. I couldn’t have [been accepted] into Yale, but I could hold my own.”

Breslow is 2-0 on the season with a 3.75 ERA and hasn’t allowed a run in the month of May.

Badenhop is 0-2 with a 2.59 ERA, but has allowed just two runs in his last 17 1/3 innings.
