Cops: T driver lied about phone use prior to crash Gesundheit. A police affidavit says the driver claims allergies caused Sunday’s bus crash.

An MBTA bus driver allegedly lied to police by telling them an allergy-induced sneezing fit caused her to crash a Route 57 bus in Newton when in actuality a cellphone may have been to blame.

Shanna Shaw, an 18-year veteran of the MBTA, is being charged with obstruction of justice and was cited for operating to endanger, speeding and im-

peded operation following the Sunday-morning crash, which injured nine passengers, as well as Shaw.

According to an MBTA Transit Police affidavit, Shaw told police that as she turned left approaching the Route 90 overpass, she was in the middle lane and “began to sneeze. Because of the sneezing, she stated she closed her eyes. When she opened them back up, she recognized the bus was turning too far to the left.”

Shaw said she slid out of her seat as she tried to gain control of the bus, but was unable to do so, and fell to the floor as the bus traveled over the sidewalk

When questioned by police, Shaw initially denied that she had a cellphone in her possession at the time of the crash, and said she did not re-enter

the bus to radio for help after evacuating.

“I did not want to go back on the bus because it was hanging over the highway,” Shaw allegedly said.

However, according to the affidavit, Shaw admitted that she did have a cellphone after police heard it ringing in her purse while she was being treated at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Brighton.

Police reviewed surveillance video, which showed Shaw apparently holding what appeared to be a cellphone in her left hand and an unidentified item in her right hand while operating the bus,

the affidavit states.

After the crash, surveillance allegedly shows Shaw did re-enter the bus to retrieve an item from the ground, according to the affidavit.

In 2009, the MBTA banned operators from possessing electronic devices while on the job.

Police said Shaw’s phone had no record of calls or text messages after 5:30 a.m.

She has been placed on paid administrative leave, a T spokesman said.

Reassigned. Gun control billboard to be removed from Fenway Park area An iconic billboard bearing pro-gun-control messages that has been on display near Fenway Park for nearly two decades will soon lose its home.

The 252-foot-long billboard — which features a counter tracking the more than 45,000 people killed by guns in the United States since the December 2012 attack on a Newtown, Connecticut, elementary school — has been a prominent local feature since real estate developer John Rosenthal ordered the first version for a parking garage in 1995.

Rosenthal sold the garage, which overlooks the Massachusetts Turnpike, to the owners of the Red Sox a year ago, and agreed for the sign to come down in March 2015.

Rosenthal, who hopes to find a new location for the sign before it is removed, said he had put it up with a goal of changing the terms of the guncontrol debate in the United States. “You have this historically polarized national debate of

Cambridge urges ‘smaaht’ bicycling Safety. Signs in a new bike safety campaign were inspired by MassDOT’s “Use Yah Blinkah” messages.

Inspired by the viral popularity of MassDOT’s “Use Yah Blinkah” signs, electronic boards put up by the Cambridge Police Department are warning cyclists to “Be Wicked Safe” and “Be Wicked Smaaht.”

“Cycling within Cambridge is obviously very popular,” said Jeremy Warnick, the department’s director of communications. “The ‘wicked’ signs were inspired by MassDOT’s campaign. We had some other signs

posted as well, but they obviously aren’t getting the same attention as those signs. We’re not trying to be insensitive to the accidents of some in the community, but are really trying to create awareness around bicycle and motorist safety.”

The signs, located in Inman Square, Harvard Square and Central Square, also rotate the messages “Drivers: Look 4 Bikes,” and “Bikes: Look 4 Motorists,” and will be featured through the end of May, which is National Bike Safety Month.

The messages are part of the department’s “Safety in Gear” campaign, which stations Cambridge bike and Community Relations officers at highly trafficked areas to hand out fliers with bike safety tips and information on bike laws.

Cyber-spying. China confronts US envoy over Web hack accusations A tense stand-off between the United States and China over state-backed cyber espionage has dragged China’s secretive hacking unit “61398” back into focus, after the military group was pinpointed last year for mounting cyber attacks on Western commercial targets.

U.S. authorities on Monday charged five Chinese military officers at the unit, accusing them of hacking into American nuclear, metal and solar firms to steal trade secrets.

China on Tuesday summoned the U.S. ambassador in Beijing and warned it would retaliate if Washington followed through with the charges. It

said the affair would damage “mutual trust.”

At the center of the dispute is a nondescript tower block in the northern suburbs of China’s financial capital Shanghai, home to Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Unit 61398.

The 12-story block houses as many as several thousand staff, according to Mandiant, a U.S. cyber security firm recently acquired by global network security company FireEye Inc. GM recalls another 2.42 million vehicles General Motors Co. said on Tuesday it is recalling another 2.6 million vehicles globally, raising the number of vehicles it has recalled so far this year to almost 15.4 million.

The four recalls are the latest announced by the largest U.S. automaker, the highest profile of which is the recall of cars with defective ignition switches linked to at least 13 deaths. GM has been criticized by safety advocates and fined by U.S. safety regulators for not catching the faulty switch earlier.

NY Times publisher tried for ‘amicable’ split with editor New York Times Co. Chairman and Publisher Arthur Sulzberger Jr. said he tried to part ways peacefully with the top leader of the newsroom, Jill Abramson, whom he ousted last week.

“We originally drafted

House to debate bill on firing rules at veterans’ agency The House of Representatives will vote this week on a bill that will make it easier for the Department of Veterans Affairs to fire or demote senior executives, officials said Tuesday, following allegations veterans’ health care delays have led to preventable deaths.

Cops: Woman made 3-year old girl eat her own feces An Arizona woman was arrested over the weekend on suspicion of forcing a 3-yearold girl to eat her own feces after the girl defecated in a bathtub, court records show.

Nicole Candelaria, 28, was

arrested Saturday and booked on suspicion of child abuse after the girl — her boyfriend’s daughter — reported the incident to the girl’s mother, according to police.

ing robots. That means we get to see both the old and young versions of the same character, namely Professor Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart and James McAvoy, respectively), as well as two Magnetos (Ian McKellen and Michael Fassbender).

The only duo that shares any scenes is Stewart and McAvoy, when both characters meet up for a little nerd-electrifying pow-wow.

“It was James’ firstt day of work and it was my last day of work,” recalls Stewart of shooting the scene.

“My bags were packed, and I was ready to get out off Dodge.” He says they ey didn’t belabor the scene. ne “I don’t recall rehearsing it. We knew the lines and they rolled the cameras; it was four minutes’ work. I shouldn’t have said that — I should have said we worked on it for weeks,” he says.

McAvoy obviously had much to draw on for his performance.

“I’ve been a fan [of Stewart’s] for years,” McAvoy says.

“I watched the [‘X-Men’] films, and ‘Star Trek,’ all the way back to ‘Dune.’ I don’t know if anyone remembers ‘Dune.’”

(Stewart played a mulleted Gurney Halleck in the 1984 David Lynch film.)

“I watched the empathy that pours out of him in his previous movies,” he continues. “It’s the prime characteristic of Professor X: this willingness to care and reach out and help.”

He wasn’t the only one studying another actor’s performance. Stewart studied McAvoy as well. “It made me want to go back and shoot it again, now that I knew where I came cam from. I could get so much more James McAvoy into that perM fformance,” he says, somewhat jokingly.

At the same time, Charles Xavier is in a C very different spot v than tha he has been in any o other movie. “We’ve seen that the good professor always has options, and those options have been through negotiation, persuasion, some resolution that will not be violent,” Stewart says. “From the beginning of this movie, there is no other option.

“Our enemy this time is not available for rational conversation or to be reasoned with.

The Professor has to make the decision to destroy something to survive. It toughens Xavier up.”

Solo Magneto Tragically, Ian McKellen could not attend the press junket in New York, which would have reunited him with his dear friend and funny picture buddy, Stewart. That also meant that the two Magnetos couldn’t butt heads. In fact, McKellen and Fassbender didn’t even see each other on set.

“We sort of kept missing each other,” Fassbender recalls.

That doesn’t mean he wasn’t studying his work, however.

“For this one I spent a lot of time with this video on YouTube, which was Ian McKellen in the 1970s doing this workshop on ‘Macbeth.’ I was play-

ing that over and over again, getting more of the rhythms and tones of his voice.” This, of course, means no onscreen meet-up. “Unfortunately, we didn’t get a scene together. We flipped a coin, and James and Patrick won the toss,” he jokes.

Review. The latest from Lyric Stage Company is “close to perfect.� “Into the Woods� is one of Stephen Sondheim’s most popular musicals, and if the Lyric Stage Company’s current production is any indication, it’s easy to see why.

Director Spiro Veloudos almost magically transforms the small confines of the Lyric into the perfect backdrop for Sondheim and James Lapine’s musical reinterpretation of classic fairy tales. The big, busy show, which in lesser hands could easily overwhelm the space, is as close to perfect as the Lyric has ever come.

The adapted mishmash of Grimm fairy tales exposes the dark underbelly of happily-ever-after as the likes of Cinderella, Red Riding Hood and Jack (of beanstock fame) pay the price for their self-serving wishes.

And while many of your favorites meet ill-fated endings, Veloudos and company have imbued the production with enough humor, tenderness and passion to make it a delightful journey.

You might think you’re doing your skin some extra good, but really, even a 15 provides almost 90 percent protection. “Whether the SPF is 15, 30 or 100, it needs to be reapplied with the same frequency,” Shultz says.

Boozing? You’re more likely to burn. When you’re drinking, your skin is way more vulnerable to the sun. That’s because alcohol dilates your blood vessels, meaning there’s more red in your skin, and “the pinker the skin, the closer the blood cells are to the surface — and therefore, they absorb more damaging UV

New Research Showing Progress in Breast Cancer Treatment Breast cancer is the most common cancer among American women (except for skin cancers), and more than 230,000 new cases will be diagnosed this year, according to the American Cancer Society (ACS). This translates to about 1 in 8 women in the U.S. who will develop invasive breast cancer in their lifetime, the ACS says.

With such a large population of patients, researchers at the Susan F. Smith Center for Women’s Cancers at Dana-Farber in Boston are actively pursuing new approaches to breast cancer therapy, prevention and symptom management through clinical trials. In recent months, results from these trials have provided new information about possible treatments that could be more effective in fighting the disease.

s )N ONE RECENT STUDY RESEARCHERS HAVE found new drug combinations that might be more effective against triplenegative breast cancer, a form of the disease that affects 10-15 percent of breast cancer patients. The study showed that when the chemotherapy drug carboplatin is used, or added to other chemotherapy treatments, there was a sharp increase in the number of tumors that shrank away completely.

“We want to avoid giving patients extra drugs that they do not need, and, if possible, replace current treatment with a drug that is more specific to a woman’s cancer and potentially more effective,” says.

Winer also worked with researchers on another combination treatment method, which uses a less toxic approach in women Eric Winer, MD, senior author of the study and director of the Breast Oncology Program in the Susan F. Smith Center for Women’s Cancers at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute

with small, HER2+ cancer who have already undergone surgery. In spite of having fewer side effects than some of the standard regimens, it was highly effective in this group of patients with early stage disease.

Another recent study led by experts at Dana-Farber has shown that exercise can reduce joint pain caused by certain breast cancer drugs. These drugs, known as aromatase inhibitors, are used to treat post-menopausal patients who have breast cancer tumors that are sensitive to hormones. While effective, the aromatase inhibitors often cause joint pain.

According to the study, moderate daily exercise helped decrease joint pain in the women who were taking the aromatase inhibitors. The pain also decreased significantly more in those who exercised than in those who didn’t.

As a driver and as a bicyclist, I am so disturbed by the fact that people choose to “...always ride bikes against traffic.” It’s so dangerous for both parties: With a bike going 10 miles per hour and a vehicle going 30-40 miles per hour heading toward one another, that doesn’t leave time to prevent a head-on collision.

Luck of the Irish not on C’s side in lottery NBA. The Celtics dropped a spot in draft order in the NBA lottery and will pick No. 6 overall.

The Celtics once again left the NBA draft lottery frustrated as they slid from the No. 5 to No. 6 spot Tuesday night, ahead of the player draft on Thursday, June 26.

It wasn’t an entirely surprising result for the C’s considering they had a 34.21 percent chance at landing at No. 6. They had a 10.3 percent chance at the top overall pick going in and a 23.83 percent chance at standing pat at No. 5. They could have done worse than they did as well as they had an 8.18 percent chance at falling to No. 7 and an 0.37 percent chance at landing at No. 8.

Cleveland was the big winner on lottery night as the Cavs had just a 1.7 percent chance at landing the top overall selection. The Cavs also struck gold in the lottery last year and in 2011.

Steady improvement

Nava hoping for another chance in Boston Last season was a breakout campaign for Red Sox outfielder Daniel Nava. He posted a line of .303/.385/.445, which had him among the best American League outfielders, trailing just Mike Trout and Torii Hunter in batting average and just Trout in on-base percentage.

Much like the Red Sox as a team, 2014 hasn’t been too kind to the switch-hitter. After hitting .149 in 17 games, Nava was sent down to Triple-A Pawtucket, where he’s been since April 23.

“Things are good,” Nava said on Monday. “Everyone here is trying to get better and work on their games, so I’m just another guy trying to work on

stuff that I’m not as good at as I’d like to be.”

In 20 games, Nava is hitting .275/.370/.435, but has improved in areas manager John Farrell pointed to at the time he was sent down, which included hitting from the right side of the plate — as he had just two hits in 21 at-bats. He has gotten better as he’s batting .227 against opposing left-handers.

“I don’t know,” Nava said when asked if he feels like he’s doing better from the right side. “I don’t pay attention to numbers, but I’m feeling more comfortable.”

While Nava is using the time at Pawtucket to improve on perceived weaknesses, he hasn’t lost sight of his overall game and what made him a major leaguer to begin with.

Coming off a season like he had in 2013 and winning a World Series, Nava could be looking at the current Red Sox team with their recent struggles — particularly in the

outfield — and wonder why he hasn’t been called back up. But the 31-year-old hasn’t done any of that.

“No, it doesn’t matter. Just from the perspective of the more you focus on that [type of thing], the less you focus on the field,” said Nava. “I mean, I pay attention in terms of how the team is doing, but I don’t sit there and breakdown what a guy is doing in terms of offensively and defensively, because when you start doing that you take your energy away from playing baseball. Those aren’t my decisions anyway.”

As it stands currently, the Red Sox outfield has a number of players underperforming, including Grady Sizemore, who is batting .227/.297/.348 and just .239 against righties.

The Red Sox re-signed shortstop Stephen Drew on Tuesday, according to multiple reports. The deal is reportedly worth $10 million for the rest of the season. Drew and his agent Scott Boras had been holding out for months in search of a favorable deal. The 31-year-old hit .253 during Boston’s run to the World Series in 2013, bashing 13 homers and driving in 67 runs. He is expected to be available to play for the Sox by next week.
