NYC boasts largest population gains Bigger Apple. New York had the largest numeric population increase of any city from 2012 to 2013. New York City’s population grew by more people than any other large municipality between 2012 and 2013, according to population estimates released by the U.S. Census Bureau on Thursday. The city gained 61,440 residents from July 1, 2012, and July 1, 2013, reaching a record population of 8.4 million people last year. “The increase is fueled by people continuing to move to the city, a decline in the number of people leaving the city as well

Bust out those swimsuits: Beach season has arrived. Some 14 miles of beaches maintained by the city will re-open on Saturday. Swimming is allowed when lifeguards are on duty daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Labor Day. This year, the city will offer a free texting service to “know before you go” if beaches are open or closed. New Yorkers can also receive alerts about any advisories and waterquality issues about their beaches. The Health Department regularly tests water quality at the city’s beaches to ensure it is safe for swimming. Rain runoff, sewage and other pollution events pose health risks to swimmers and can cause closures. Text BEACH to 877-877 to get beach alerts and statuses. NYC launches ‘Know Your Zone’ campaign Prepare. The initiative informs about hurricane evacuation zones. On the same day forecasters predicted a “near-normal” hurricane season, the city wants New Yorkers to know if they live in an evacuation zone. Through targeted advertising and community outreach with the Know Your Zone campaign, the city hopes to educate New Yorkers about how to prepare for the upcoming hurricane season. While hurricane season kicks in on June 1, New York is expected to be hit hardest between August and October. “The best thing New Yorkers can do to prepare for the upcoming hurricane season is to know their zone,” OEM Commissioner Joe Bruno said. New deal might save the hospital’s ER Though the rest of the Brooklyn facility was set to shutter on Thursday, stakeholders were nearing a tentative deal to keep a portion of Long Island College Hospital open. Water main break near Katz’s Deli disrupts LES Not even a ooded basement and wrecked street will stop Katz’s Deli and its pastrami sandwiches. The area around East
Houston and Ludlow streets were inundated at around 11 a.m. on Thursday after a water main burst in front of the delicatessen, ooding its basement with more than 12 inches of water. The city was able to shut o the water supply, cutting service to businesses — including Katz’s.
Even so, the deli took to Twitter to say no one was hurt and that they were open for business. Once the water receded, the block was left with another problem — a massive sinkhole opened up in the middle of the busy Manhattan street. CHESTER JESUS SORIA

Biggest attack in years kills 31 in China Explosives hurled from two vehicles that plowed into an open market in China’s troubled Xinjiang region killed 31 people on Thursday, state media reported — the deadliest act of violence in the region in years. China called the attack in the regional capital of
Urumqi a “serious, violent terrorist incident” and domestic security chief Meng Jianzhu vowed to strengthen a crackdown on the “arrogance of terrorists.” Ninety-four people were wounded. China has blamed a series of knife and bomb attacks in recent months on separatist militants from Xinjiang, the traditional home of the ethnic Muslim Uighurs. REUTERS

Ukraine said on Thursday its forces had rebuffed overnight attacks by armed pro-Russian separatists on an army checkpoint and a border crossing and called for an emergency session of the U.N. Security Council to discuss Moscow’s role in the violence.
With tensions rising ahead of Sunday’s presidential election in Ukraine, security sources said eight soldiers had been killed in fighting at the checkpoint, while some border guards were hurt when “dozens” of gunmen tried to enter Ukraine from Russia. REUTERS

Accused Boston bomber admitted role in deadly attack, prosecutors say Death penalty. He may face execution if convicted of the attacks, as well as the murder of a police officer. The accused Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev had admitted to a role in the attack during an interrogation in hospital a day after his arrest, U.S. prosecutors said in a court filing. That statement, and others made in the hours following Tsarnaev’s arrest but before he had been informed of his rights to legal representation, should be
admitted at his upcoming trial because the agents interviewing him believed there was still a risk to the public of further attacks, prosecutors said in a series of filings late Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Boston. While the suspect, now 20, said he and his older brother Tamerlan — who died after a gunfight with police days after the bombing attack that killed three people and injured 264 — were the only people involved in the bombing, investigators did not believe him, prosecutors said. “Agents continued to question Tsarnaev not to extract a confession, which they already had, but because of their reasonable

belief that Tsarnaev was concealing information about impending attacks, accomplices and/or the existence of additional bombs,” prosecutors said. His lawyers earlier this month argued that the statements made while Tsarnaev was hospitalized for gunfire wounds, after police found him hiding in a dry-docked boat on April 19, should not be admitted because he did not have an attorney present. Prosecutors also released some new details of a note Tsarnaev had scrawled on the inside of that boat, in which he tried to explain his motivations. They said the note also amounted to a confession of the crime. REUTERS

KEEPING IT ALL IN THE FAMILY As you read this, the population of the country is about 318 million people, according to the U.S. census. I say “about” because when you consider everyone who is being born or immigrating, the result is an extra American every 15 seconds. So if you’re reading this fairly late in the day, tack on a few more folks, and you might want to order your pizza now to beat the rush. We are the third largest country in the world by population, behind only China and India. We have a sprawling education system, ready — if expensive — access to our election process and no end of shops making cheap yard signs on demand. So how is it that D.C. pundits are frothing like rabid possums over the possibility of another Bush-Clinton presidential

Can we not find two people who are free of existing political dynasties? clash in 2016? Somewhere in the vast pool of ambitious citizens making our daily commutes into sweaty, hornhonking hells, can we not find two people who are free of existing political dynasties? I’m not implying that Hillary Clinton and/or Jeb Bush are unqualified to be president. I’m sure either could find the Oval Office, manage a decent salute at the helicopter door, keep aphids out of the rose garden and maybe even help use up some of the old White House stationary that already has their names on top. What
I’m saying is that it blows my mind that a nation as rich in talent as this one keeps turning to the same families for leadership, as if no one else could fill the bill. I think this happens for three reasons. First, these people keep running. Second, the political parties keep falling in line behind who they perceive as “winners.” And third, we, the voters, are lazy. It’s easier to cozy up to candidates we know than those we’ve yet to meet. But limiting the gene pool of politics also limits our possibilities. Maybe there are not millions of families producing souls truly capable of being president. But it is equally hard to imagine in a country as great as this, that there are only two. E-cigarettes boost quitting success Survey. The new devices remain controversial, but double the chances a smoker will quit. Smokers trying to quit are 60 percent more likely to report success if they switch to e-cigarettes than if they use nicotine products such as patches or gum, scientists said Tuesday. Presenting findings from a study of almost 6,000 smokers over five
years, the researchers said the results suggest that e-cigarettes could play an important role in reducing smoking rates and cutting incidences of tobacco-related deaths and illnesses. Tobacco smoking is a major risk factor for not only lung cancer and other chronic respiratory diseases, but for cardiovascular diseases, the world’s No. 1 killer. “E-cigarettes could substantially improve public health because of their widespread appeal and the huge health gains associated with stopping

smoking,” said study lead Robert West of University College London’s epidemiology and public health department. Mainly funded by the
charity Cancer Research UK and published in the journal Addiction, West’s study surveyed 5,863 smokers between 2009 and 2014 who had tried to quit without using prescription medicines or professional help. E-cigarettes contain nicotine — a stimulant not thought to be particularly harmful, although it is addictive — delivering it in a water vapor rather than in smoke from burning tobacco. A relatively new product, they have become highly controversial, with public health opinion split
over whether they might be a powerful tool in helping those hooked on cigarettes to finally give it up, or whether they simply replace one bad habit with another. Critics point to a lack of long-term scientific evidence to support the safety and effectiveness of ecigarettes, and warn they may also renormalize smoking, enticing children or other nonsmokers to take it up. FILM Hugh Jackman has a Band-Aid on his nose. His doctor spied a bit of basal cell carcinoma on his nose and removed it. “It is a skin cancer, but if you’re going to get it, it’s the kind you want,” he says. It was found while Jackman was checking up on an earlier bout of the disease from six months ago. It was bound to happen: “I grew up in Australia,” he says. “I have English parents and English skin.” It’s changed everything for him. “I went down to Australia this summer. It’s a whole different thing for me to actively try to stay out of the sun.” But he’s supposed to be talking about superstrength, not sun safety. Jackman is in town to promote “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” based on the beloved 1981 two-issue comic, which finds the Wolverine jumping to 1973 to alter a bleak dystopian future. It’s Jackman’s

Mellowing out
Logan’s much more calm in this one, especially compared to how volatile he was in “The Wolverine.” He’s come to a certain place in himself, about his position, about his past, about who he is. It’s more about the team now. ... I think it’s been well-earned, and I think after “The Wolverine” it feels natural. He gets to play a mentor/diplomat/ guide/wise old sage role that doesn’t have him flying off the handle every five seconds. I’ve been around long enough to know that this is rare: to be able to play a character you love after all these years and still feel like it’s relevant, and not just old hat.

HUGH JACKMAN “X-Men: Days of Future Past” is Hugh Jackman’s sixth turn as Wolverine, unless you count his cameo in “X-Men: First Class.”

Reaching out
Jackman was a newbie to most when he was cast as Logan/Wolverine in the first “X-Men” in 2000. But he was already an established star of musicals, including playing Curly in “Oklahoma!” in London starting in 1998. Throughout, he’s made a point of being versatile, doing dramas and epics and brainy thrillers, such as “The Prestige.” One thing he’d like to do — or at least do more of — is romantic-comedies. “I did one, with ‘Kate & Leopold,’ a long time ago. I’d like to do that again,” he says.
ENJOYING IT MORE THAN EVER sixth time playing the easily riled mutant Logan, aka Wolverine (seventh if you count a cameo in “X-Men: First Class”). In person, Jackman is as far from his most famous screen incarnation as possible (which is to say, very approachable and talkative). And he’s not tired of Wolverine, even after 14 years. What is it like playing the same character for so many years? I’m weirdly enjoying it more than ever. I think the movies are getting better, and the scripts are getting better. This one is based on the comic book, but it felt really organic in the way it celebrates the whole series. I love that it’s part comic-book movie, part time-travel movie. It reminds me of “Back to the Future.” And I’m the only one lucky enough to play both time periods, so I got

I think he should just be a gardener, and he’s kind of cool but he’s really at peace.” And I said, “Now hang on: Good idea, but I think the Wolverine fans around the world want to see one little fight.” He said, “No. I think we’ve seen enough. I think he should just be calm.” [Laughs] This was made soon after “The Wolverine,” too. I did “Prisoners” in between. That had complications, because Denis [Villeneuve, “Prisoner”’s director] didn’t want a neighborhood father —
who was supposed to be kind of an everyman — being completely jacked. And I was training every morning while I was shooting that. I never really told them. They kept looking at me when food was being delivered every two hours — all these chicken breasts. They had the sense to not even ask me. But Denis did cover me up. If you notice I’m always in long shirts. There were no tee-shirts. I complained about it after awhile, but it’s easier to stay in shape than to get into shape. That’s an old Will Smith quote. And it’s true. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

Of a certain era
Back in the day “Days of Future Past” takes Wolverine back to 1973. That’s a good thing, in Jackman’s opinion. “It’s perfect. I don’t think Wolverine would ever want to leave the ’70s. The muttonchops, the clothes, the car — it’s him. I think the moment the Tears for Fears, Flock of Seagulls, Duran Duran era came along, Wolverine was like, ‘I’m out.’”

Not quite first class Comics sequel. The new “X-Men” is a time-travel romp that forgets about its characters.
In the Marvel wing of the current comic-book movie deluge, each new entry is largely interchangeable with the others. By that measure, the “X-Men” franchise is refreshingly inconsistent, both in quality and in what we’re being shown. Each film is radically different from the others — the best way to deal with a comic that can be overstuffed. “X-Men: Days of Future Past” is even a time-travel romp, and it’s nifty enough to ignore that it’s a film exec’s dream, bringing together all mu-
tants, good and bad, young and old, into one scrumptious money pie. Adapted from a beloved two-issue comic from 1981, “Days of Future Past” starts in a dystopian future where giant, governmentrun robots kill any and all mutants. In the comic, it was Kitty Pryde (Ellen Page) who was sent into the past to stop them before they started. But neither Page nor Pryde are big enough with moviegoers who don’t read the comics, so it’s Hugh Jackman’s grouchy Wolverine who heads to 1973, where his muttonchops are a better fit anyway. He has to convince a bitter Xavier (James McAvoy), a bitter-er Magneto (Michael Fassbender) and an outright belligerent Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) not to kill a mous-

tached war profiteer (Peter Dinklage), whose death will mobilize humanity against them. Unlike most Marvel products, “X-Men” is about something bigger than personality clashes and routine battles. The comics and the films are ostentatious about exploring bigotry; “X2” even finds one “coming out” to his parents, who respond by saying, “Have you ever tried not being a mutant?” Out director Bryan Singer might have drawn from his own experiences, but here
“A friend recommended USA Vein Clinics. My only regret is that I didn’t do it sooner!”
he’s mostly about craftsmanship, bringing a focus the other “X-Men” films lack — including the two that he himself made. Despite boasting more than a dozen mutants, the film is tight and streamlined, sticking to the story’s path and moving its characters around like pawns. In fact, if anything, it’s too tight. Those dozen-plus mutants feel like pawns, too. Most are defined entirely by their super powers. Wolverine tries to be a team player this time around, but it’s not clear
if he’s matured or if there just wasn’t time to do more with him in this regard. The few times the movie concentrates on character development, Singer and screenwriter Simon Kinberg’s deep feeling for them shines through. But as exciting as it can be, it’s a character-driven comics movie that forgets about the characters, in addition to using too few 1973 music cues when the world really just wanted to see Wolverine strut to “Me and Mrs. Jones.”

One of Sandler’s ‘better’ movies Family comedy. His new flick won’t make you want to offer him a glass of shut-the-hell-up.
“Blended” begins with Adam Sandler taking a blind date to Hooters. Despite being a father of three daughters, Sandler’s Jim doesn’t notice Lauren (Drew Barrymore) is fuming, perhaps because he’s staring slack-jawed at the World’s Strongest Man competition on TV. are made, and then he breaks out the news that his wife died from cancer. That’s the Sandler formula: a mishmash of bro yuks suddenly interrupted by heaping helpings of “heart.” The Sandler empire has made over 20 films and it hasn’t gotten better at smoothing over rough spots. They’ve perhaps gotten worse, because why fix what paying audiences don’t think is broken? “Blended” is one of the “better” Sandler films, which is to say it’s sometimes half-tolerable. Barrymore is key: As in “The Wedding Singer,” she brings out something in Sandler. Not a lot, but it is something. Here, they’re single parents who gradually fall in love when they share a family suite in a lavish African resort. (Which country they’re in isn’t revealed.) The machinations it takes to get them there are convoluted and nonsensical: Jim orchestrates it despite finding her a shrill, overprotective harpy.
Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler have a not-so-nifty first date in “Blended.” / WARNER BROS. PICTURES
The bulk of the film is relegated to regimented activities — safari, paragliding, ostrich riding — and to Sandler playing father figure to Barrymore’s sons while Barrymore teaches Sandler’s daughters to stick to gender norms. But at the heart is the budding romance, and “Blended” comes alive when

their fights dissolve into flirtations, their weirdly palpable chemistry finally clicking into place. Even some of the emotional scenes are actually moving, as when Barrymore sings “Over the Rainbow” to his motherless daughters. Sandler has already played a widower, in “Reign Over Me,” one of his sporadic se-
rious ventures. You can see his Jim retreating into his man-boy shell, using goofiness and occasional hostility to mask his grief, especially from his daughters. Or is Sandler being his usual remote and tired self ? Mostly, he just seems to be in another Adam Sandler film, and when Jim uses his dead
wife to drive a wedge between himself and Lauren late in the movie, it feels like a third-act plot contrivance. Frankly, that “Blended” is genuinely sweet at all is enough to overrate it. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

from prison, and doesn’t accept apologies easily. Things quickly escalate into “Cape Fear” territory, and what started like “A History of Violence” in dirtier clothes takes a lot of turns into different genres. It’s the kind of shape-shifter where the primary pleasure is in being jerked around, thinking you were getting one movie only to wind
up watching another. But this is also highly suspect — a sign that filmmaker Jim Mickle might be distracting us from something (say, a logic-straining shady underworld) with crazy plotting. But Mickle’s tone — heavy, with an ’80s-era synth score — is bewitching enough to carry viewers over the drawbacks. MATT PRIGGE

Alejandro Jodorowsky calms his younger self (played by Jeremias Herskovits) in “The Dance of Reality.” LE SOLEIL FILMS, CHILE, CAMERA ONE, FRANCE 2013, PATHE, ABKCO LA DANZA LLC
Call it a comeback ... kind of ‘Reality’. Legendary director Alejandro Jodorowsky’s first film in 23 years is oddly pleasant — to a point.
Alejandro Jodorowsky invented the midnight movie, but his timing has usually been off. Since exploding on the scene with 1970’s “El Topo,” he’s only been able to make five films, many of them created only after soul-sucking money issues. But fate has it that his first film in 23 years arrives just as his work is back in vogue, being referenced by Kanye and St. Vincent, as well as in the recent doc “Jodorowsky’s Dune.” “The Dance of Reality” is not, however, a primer. The best entryway for Review ‘The Dance of Reality’ Director: Alejandro Jodorowsky Stars: Brontis Jodorowsky, Jeremias Herskovits Rating: NR
•••••
Jodorowsky is to dive right into the phantasmagoric, bloody, colorful and fleshy excesses of “El Topo” and (better yet) “The Holy Mountain.” “Dance of Reality” doesn’t run as purple as either of those. This is a tale of childhood, and it’s almost comforting that even Alejandro Jodorowsky’s youth was — up to a point, in spots — fairly commonplace. Young Alejandro (Jeremias Herskovits) is just another kid with a tyrannical, macho father. So far, so familiar. The details are a little off, though: His mother (Pamela Flores) — who sings all of her lines in an operatic warble — thinks he bears the likeness of her own father, who was immolated in an oil barrel accident. His dad praises Stalin, but winds up bouncing around between various violent factions. Some of this is more quirky than inspired. It doesn’t have the mad energy of previous Jodorowskys, but rather a pleasant — OK, almost pleasant — memory piece vibe. But it’s better this than the now 85-yearold — though still very brisk — artist trying to actually recapture his groove and failing depressingly. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

ARTS A
LES embraces its artsy roots Festival. The Lower East Side has come a long way since the crazy ’80s, but there’s still enough creativity to keep this arts fest going for the 19th year.
Festival goers can see performances for free Friday through Sunday. /THEATER FOR THE NEW CITY

Walking the streets of today’s Lower East Side, the fist-pumping chant of “Gabba Gabba Hey seems almost totally drowned out by the hiss and churn and espresso machines. Vaporizing along with the steam are many neighborhood artists, who are no longer able to afford the ever-rising rent and cost of living. But not all have surrendered yet. Each year, the Theater for the New City marshals the neighborhood’s forces with the Lower East Side Festival of the Arts. Now in its 19th year, the celebration tips its hat
and heart to the long list of great artists who have lived, created and performed in the area throughout its history, including George and Ira Gershwin, Charlie Parker, Fanny Brice, Eugene O’Neill, Mark Twain, Molly Picon and the Ramones. For three days, beginning Friday, music, poetry, dance, theater, film, comedy and aerial acts take to the stages of the theater and outside among the public. Among those scheduled this year are Academy Award-winner F. Murray Abraham, singer and actress Tammy Grimes, comedian Penny Arcade and musician Phoebe Legere. Scenes from a new musical adaptation of “Nicho-
las Nickleby, as well as theater pieces by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Nilo Cruz, will also be performed. This year’s theme — Art Stands Up to Power, Corporations Are Not People, Green vs. Greed — runs through all events, including the exhibition of paintings, photographs and sculptures from 37 Lower East Side and East Village artists in the theater lobby. When an ‘Idol’ meets his idols North Carolina’s Caleb Johnson (the one in the center wearing red, sans makeup) was crowned the winner of Fox’s “American Idol” on Wednesday night at the Nokia Theatre L.A. So who is the larger gentleman in Paul Stanley face paint? That’s Johnson’s brother Houston, a huge Kiss fan, obvs. Caleb Johnson defeated Michigan’s Jena Irene, whose powerhouse voice shone through in her duet with Paramore on “Ain’t It Fun.” Other artists who performed in the finale alongside “Idol” finalists included John Legend, Jennifer Nettles, Demi Lovato, Jason Mraz and more. Unfortunately, no other sibling of a contestant dressed as any of those artists.

How to play Fill in the grid so that every row, every column and every 3x3 box contains the digits 1-9. There is no math involved. You solve the puzzle with reasoning and logic.
Cyclists are just the worst OK. It has been a week now and all of these people are still harping on these bicycle riders and which way they should be riding down the road. The fact of that matter is, they shouldn’t be allowed to ride on the road, period. I understand sharing the road is law (what a stupid idea), and that is why we do it, but that doesn’t mean we like it. I have never in my life seen a bike rider go 35 or more miles an hour. So why should main roads that do not have little side bike lanes allow people who can’t even go 20 mph to “drive” on a road with cars speeding along anywhere between 30 and 70 mph? Do you re-
ally think that after I have worked my ass off for 9+ hours a day that I want to be stuck behind some obese moron biking 10 mph in the middle of the fast lane, waiting for him or her to struggle up the hill, while the goddamn speed limit is at the very least 35 mph? Bikers have gotten greedy. It’s all about, “oh, the cars, they aren’t paying attention to me.” Instead, how about, “thank you, cars, for allowing my slow, stupid ass to hold up law-abiding traffic while I take three hours to bike my spandex-engulfed body up the middle of a four-lane highway.” JENN MATRONE, VIA EMAIL

Canadiens back in series with OT win
NHL playoffs. The Rangers allowed a quick OT score as Montreal won Game 3 and pulled to one game back.
The Rangers have a series on their hands after all. Alex Galchenyuk’s goal 1:12 into overtime sent the Rangers to a 3-2 overtime loss to the Candiens in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference finals Thursday night at the Garden. Galchenyuk redirected a shot off his chest to beat Henrik Lundqvist at pointblank range. The Rangers lead the best-of-seven series 2-1, with Game 4 on Sunday night at the Garden. Carl Hagelin and Chris Kreider scored for the Rangers. Andrei Markov and Danny Briere also scored for the Canadiens, who received a sterling performance from rookie goaltender Dustin Tokarski. In his second start in the Stanley Cup playoffs, Tokarski made 35 saves. But he would want Kreider’s tying goal back. Trailing 2-1 with 28.1 sec-

Top trio The Rangers have rolled four lines and three defensive pairings over the course of the season and the playoffs. By doing so, they have created a system where anyone can contribute. In Game 3, the trio that stepped to the forefront was the line of Carl Hagelin, Brad Richards and Martin St. Louis, which combined for a goal, 13 shots on goal and 15 shot attempts.

It was a reaction few could predict two minutes earlier when Briere found
a loose puck alongside Lundqvist and tucked it into the net to put the Canadiens ahead 2-1. Hagelin opened the scoring 15:18 in before Markov tied it up, 1-1, on a slapshot with 3:20 gone in the second. DENIS GORMAN @DenisGorman sports@metro.us

No walkover Dustin Tokarski, filling in for star Carey Price, played solid in net during Game 2 despite taking the loss. He played well again Thursday and earned a win in Game 3. Tokarski particularly bedeviled St. Louis, who was stuffed point blank a few times. METRO

Vick: This isn’t an ‘open QB competition’ The Jets don’t have an open quarterback competition, said veteran quarterback Michael Vick on Thursday as he essentially ceded the starting job to second-year quarterback Geno Smith. Vick came to the Jets this offseason as a free agent signing, a season removed from a hamstring injury which cost him his starting job with the Eagles. It was assumed Vick would be able to compete for the starting job right away with the Jets. Instead, Vick sounded resigned
to a season of carrying a clipboard. “[Last year], we knew, both of us coming in, that it was open competition,” Vick said of the battle

with Nick Foles. “The best guy was going to win the job.” This year, Vick said it isn’t quite as “cut and dry.” “This situation is different, it is kind of unique,” Vick said. “Even though it’s not an open competition, we’re both competing every day. I think we both have to come and perform each and every day.” Smith wouldn’t lay claim to the starting job when he spoke to the media on Thursday, leaving Vick to cede the job. The veteran sounded content at coming in to provide a mentor role, even before the first snap of minicamp. KRISTIAN DYER
