Investigators piece together clues from plane wreckage Bedford crash. Newly released 911 calls paint a grim image of the deadly incident.

Investigators continue to scour the scene at Hanscom Field trying to uncover the cause of a deadly plane crash that killed seven passengers and sparked a fireball that one 911 caller likened to an atomic bomb.

Bedford police on Monday released recordings of emergency calls placed shortly after the private Gulfstream IV crashed and erupted into

flames around 9:40 p.m. on Saturday.

One caller, a woman who sounded shaken, said she looked out of her window and “all of a sudden I see this huge dome.”

“It looked like the atomic bomb went off, and it was a mushroom cloud and fire was going everywhere,” she said.

Caller Mike Stephens told the 911 operator that he saw “a giant column of smoke and flames.”

Another woman said she heard a big boom that “shook the house.”

Luke Schiada, an NTSB senior air safety investigator, said Monday afternoon that investigators were having trouble reaching the cockpit and flight data recorders due to the position of the wreckage.

“We have not been able to access a large portion of the air-

craft because of where it came to rest,” Schiada said, adding that crews were setting up a crane “to be able to dig through material in the aircraft” throughout the night.

Investigators said the plane went off Hanscom’s runway, rolled down an embankment and settled in a gully about 2,000 feet away. A witness told investigators that the plane never became airborne.

“We are not drawing any conclusion from that one fact,” Schiada said.

The Philadelphia Inquirer confirmed that its co-owner, Lewis Katz, 72, was among those killed.

On Sunday, three other passengers were identified as Anne B. Leeds, Marcella M. Dalsey and Susan K. Asbell, all friends of Katz’s from South New Jersey.

Middlesex County prosecutors on Monday identified James McDowell, 51, of Georgetown, Delaware, as the pilot, and Bauke “Mike” de Vries, 45, of Marlton, New Jersey, as the co-pilot.

Teresa Ann Benhoff, 48, of Easton, Maryland, was identified as the flight attendant.

The two workers were about 35 feet down in a shaft where the “salt and pepper” towers usually are. The towers were removed earlier this year as part of the refurbishing project.

Lawyers for the friend, Kazakh exchange student Dias Kadyrbayev, are trying to persuade a federal judge to throw out statements he made under interrogation in a police station, after being ordered out of his apartment by heavily armed agents, saying his comments were not voluntary.

Police: Sex offender rapes Arlington woman Level 3

Home invasion. Police charged the convicted sex offender with home invasion, rape and assault for the Sunday night attack.

A Level 3 sex offender allegedly broke into the home of an Arlington woman and attacked and raped her Sunday night, police said.

Essie Billingslea, 45, of Boston, faces multiple charges including aggravated rape, home invasion and assault and battery, according to Arlington police. He was ordered held without bail during his arraignment Monday.

He pleaded not guilty.

Police were called to the woman’s home for a well-being check at about 8:15 p.m.

When they arrived, officers saw a man fleeing out a back door. The officers chased the

Inside the home, officers found the woman suffering from serious injuries. She told police that Billingslea broke into her home, beat her and then raped her at knife point, police said.

“This is a heinous crime. A woman has been viciously attacked in her home by a Level 3 sex offender with a history of violence,” Arlington Police Chief Frederick Ryan said in a statement. “I commend my officers for capturing this

dangerous felon, and we will spare no resource in providing the victim with the support and care that she needs.”

Billingslea was convicted of several offenses, according to his listing on the state’s Sex Offender Registry Board.

He was convicted in 1989 of rape of a child with force and in 1995 of rape and abuse of a child and indecent assault and battery on a child under 14.

Clean air. US unveils sweeping plan to slash power plant pollution The U.S. power sector must cut carbon dioxide emissions 30 percent by 2030 from 2005 levels, according to federal regulations unveiled on Monday that form the centerpiece of the Obama administration’s climate change strategy.

The Environmental Protection Agency’s proposal is one of the most significant environmental rules proposed by the United States, and could transform the power sector, which relies on coal for nearly 38 percent of electricity.

Gina McCarthy, administrator of the EPA, said on Monday that between 2020 and 2030, the amount of carbon dioxide the proposal would reduce in the U.S. would be more than double the carbon pollution from the entire power sector in 2012.

States will have flexible means to achieve ambitious but attainable targets, regardless of their current energy mixes. States which rely heavily on coal-fired power plants are thought to have the tough-

Hide your daughters! R&B singer Chris Brown was released early from the slammer yesterday. His list of offenses is too long to include here, but it all started back in 2009 when he beat up his then-girlfriend, Rihanna, and then violated his probation. Here come the numbers: He was sentenced to a year, but he only served 108 days in jail. That’s because

they deducted the 59 days he had served earlier, and also the 116 days he was in rehab.

He also got credit for good behavior. Breezy’s eternal freedom is not a certainty though: He still has a pending case for a fight outside a hotel in Washington, D.C. last year.

At least now he’ll know what he’s getting into if he goes back inside.

The summer of Sedaris Summer is paperback season.

Until last year, it was also the season acclaimed author David Sedaris sweated the most, literally. But his outlook changed for the sunnier — and drier — after he and his partner, Hugh, moved to the U.K., where he claims you can wear a sweater in July. “English people complain about it, but it’s fantastic for me,” he says. “Now I like summer for the first time in my life!”

This week, the humorist releases his latest soft cover, “Let’s Explore Diabetes With Owls,” a story collection recalling summers past that were impressionable, if sometimes oppressive. Berlin: New York in the â&#x20AC;&#x2122;80s, but cleaner New York City was once a glorious wasteland. Three decades ago, the middle class had been scared away â&#x20AC;&#x201D; vowing to return only when a mayor Disneyfied the Gomorrah that was Times Square. In their place, artists filled todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s multimillion-dollar apartments, partying through a last hurrah before the rich muscled their way back in.

Though some locals compare Berlin to New York in the â&#x20AC;&#x2122;80s, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a less decadent and more manageable bacchanalia, typically. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a clean metropolis, every block fit with trees and cobblestone.

There are chunks of megaprosperity: Centrally located Charlottenburg and Tiergarten â&#x20AC;&#x201D; housing the second largest urban park in the country â&#x20AC;&#x201D; promise boutiques and designer brands.

But the young and/or hip donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t live in this place, dubbed â&#x20AC;&#x153;City-West.â&#x20AC;? They dwell in the eastâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Kreuzberg â&#x20AC;&#x201D; which is south of what remains of the Berlin Wall â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and in the northâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Prenzlauer Berg or Mitte.

Good eats The large Turkish population that has long dwelled in the city introduced one of its two chief forms of street food: the doner, a gyrolike meal that stuďŹ&#x20AC;s meat, assorted veggies and feta in a pita or wrap. More action needed to fix VA problem

it take so long for actions to be taken and an investigation to go forward? The resignation of Eric Shinseki is only the beginning, and I believe an entire overhaul needs to be underway to correct the problems that involve all veterans.

To do anything less would be a disservice and a complete disgrace to all veterans who put their lives on the line to protect the nation. As a veteran, I am appalled and outraged over this insult to all of our veterans. Action is needed now!

It has been sad to have read about all the long waits at VA hospitals and facilities for medical treatments. VA Chief Eric Shinseki did not seem to have a clue on how to fix the problems and now has resigned.

Meanwhile, President Obama believes there needs to be accountability at the Department of Veteran Affairs.

US men’s roster guide A glance at the players who will be representing the U.S. in the upcoming World Cup in Brazil.

The tide is slowly turning in the States when it comes to discussing the U.S. men’s soccer team. Following the initial shock of Landon Donovan’s exclusion from the 2014 World Cup roster, the spotlight is about to shine on the players who the U.S. actually does have on its roster as the big tournament in Brazil quickly approaches.

The U.S. seems to be ditching its conservative approach in favor of an attacking style that will feature backs Fabian Johnson, DaMarcus Beasley and Timmy Chandler. Geoff Cameron and Matt Besler will also be key in front of goaltender Tim Howard. The U.S. will play its first game on June 16 against Ghana. A look at the players American fans will be counting on: Right back, left back

Tim Howard The 35-year-old is the U.S. team’s elder statesman and has been the man in net for the Red, White and Blue for the past seven years. His top game in net for the Americans arguably came in the 2010 World Cup when he held England to just one goal as

Howard was second in the Premier League in shutouts this season with 15 in 37 games In 2012, the North Brunswick, New Jersey, native set a new Premier League record for consecutive appearances with one club (184).

Jozy Altidore The U.S. will rely heavily on Altidore to find the net in Brazil. The issue? The striker hasn’t scored a goal in more than 180 days and took a great deal of heat for scoring just once in league play with Sunderland in the English Premier League.

“Everybody is so worried about my confidence,” Altidore said after going scoreless in the United States’ 2-1 exhibition victory over Turkey last Sunday. “My confidence is fine. It’s not going to change whether I score a hat trick or don’t score at all. I’m fine.”

Johnson scored his first goal in a U.S. jersey this past Sunday against Turkey when he took a pretty feed from midfielder Michael Bradley.

Dempsey, the U.S. National Team captain, will be another key man up front with Altidore. The Seattle Sounders striker scored from pointblank range in last Sunday’s U.S. win over Turkey. His history as a goal scorer is outstanding, owning the record for most goals scored by an American in the English Premier League (57). He began his career with the New England Revolution in MLS, winning the league’s Rookie of the Year award in 2004. The Nacogdoches, Texas, native is currently the team leader

Rondo talks Love run-in at Fenway this past Sunday The â&#x20AC;&#x153;Summer of Loveâ&#x20AC;? in Boston began with a big social media bang this past weekend as a photo of current Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo greeting Minnesota Timberwolves power forward Kevin Love at Sundayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Red Sox-Rays game at Fenway Park created quite an Internet buzz.

Love is said to want out of Minnesota as his agent told the T-Wolves recently that his client will flee after next season if he is not traded. Love would become an unrestricted free agent next summer.

Boston has been men-

tioned as a top destination for Love as Celtics president Danny Ainge holds assets in the form of nine first-round draft picks over the next five seasons as well as several young, talented players.

Rondo spoke to reporters Monday about meeting Love outside the EMC Club at Fenway on Sunday. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The only pitch that was thrown, I think, was [Red Sox pitcher] Jon Lester,â&#x20AC;? Rondo joked when asked if he was openly recruiting Love to come to Boston. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t pitch anything. I just told him to enjoy his time here.â&#x20AC;?
