DA: Livery driver raped, robbed woman hailing taxi Multiple charges. The driver, a Quincy man, pleaded not guilty in court on Wednesday. A woman trying to get home from the Seaport District over the weekend flagged down what she thought was a taxi and was instead allegedly driven to a secluded area where she was raped and robbed, police said. After an investigation, police determined the vehicle was

a livery car, and they arrested the livery driver Tuesday night. Hashi Said, 40, of Quincy, also known as Said Said, pleaded not guilty to multiple charges on Wednesday. The charges include aggravated rape, unarmed robbery and receiving stolen property. Boston police spoke to the woman, who is in her 20s, after 1 a.m. Sunday. She said she flagged down Said’s 2010 Grand Caravan with livery plates at the corner of Northern Avenue and D Street in the Seaport District. The woman said the driver took her to a secluded area where he sexually assaulted her and robbed her of her credit cards and iPhone. She was then dropped off on State Street. Police said the credit cards were later used to make several purchases. Detectives were able to track down Said and arrested him. MICHAEL NAUGHTON @MetroBosMike

Norwood man nabbed for ‘upskirting’ in T station A Norwood man who is the first to be charged under the state’s new “upskirting” law was under the impression that it was his right to take photographs up women’s skirts. Joshua Gonsalves, 23, is accused of using an iPad to take photographs up a 26-year-old woman’s dress at the Forest Hills station Tuesday. The woman provided a description to police, who later arrested Gonsalves aboard a Route 34 bus. Police said Gonsalves

In March, lawmakers approved legislation that cracks down on the secret photographing or electronically surveiling of “the sexual or other intimate parts” of women or children in public. The law swiftly followed a Supreme Judicial Court ruling that a man who took “upskirt” photos on the T did

Those who target children face a felony charge with a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine. Gonsalves was released on $150 bail and ordered to stay away from MBTA property. Philip Chism, the 15-year-old charged with raping and killing his Danvers High School teacher, showed signs of psychosis after allegedly attacking a clinician at a Dorchester juvenile detention facility earlier this month. Court documents released Tuesday say the teen, who is being held in the murder of Colleen Ritzer, was armed with a pencil when he followed a female counselor into a staff bathroom at the Department of Youth Services detention center

on June 2 and allegedly strangled, stabbed and punched her. After being restrained, Chism immediately showed “psychotic symptoms, yelling, screaming incoherently [and] foaming at the mouth,” according to a June 4 petition to have Chism committed to Worcester Recovery Center and Hospital for 30 days of evaluation and treatment. Chism “was out of touch with reality, screaming, yelling and moaning incoherently for about two hours even as he was taken away,” according to the petition, which was unsealed at the request of The Salem News. The alleged attack was similar to the Oct. 22, 2013, slaying of Ritzer. Prosecutors said Chism followed the 24-year-old math teacher into a restroom, stabbed her with a box cutter, raped her and robbed her

before dragging her body to a wooded area behind the school. He was 14 at the time. Chism is being held without bail after pleading not guilty to a first-degree murder charge. He will be tried as an adult. MORGAN ROUSSEAU @MetroMorgan

Charles Robinson Collins, 21, was charged with two counts of child endangerment, according g to the Essex district attorney’s office. Police were called to the Essex Street apartment building just after 7 a.m. on June 18 for a medical emergency. When emergency crews arrived they found a 3-year-old and a 2-year-old suffering from severe burns, police said. The burns were believed to be from exposure to hot water while they were in a bathtub. Google shows o new box for streaming TV Google unveiled plans to get Android into the living room. While the company has already introduced software for televisions and the Chromecast for streaming Web content to TVs, more devices will debut later this year featuring Android soft-

With Andy Brenner, a Google product manager, seated in a car on stage, the company said Android Auto will bring digital tools and media into vehicles, with capabilities for tailored maps. The event was interrupted twice by protesters, with one raising concerns about Google’s eorts into robotics. Both were eventually dealt with by security workers, and Google executives joked about the interruptions from the stage. REUTERS

Boehner plans to sue Obama over executive action abuses Legal. He said the action was not aimed at impeachment proceedings. House Speaker John Boehner said on Wednesday he is planning to file a lawsuit alleging that President Barack Obama has abused his executive authority by implementing policies without congressional approval. Boehner told reporters the suit was aimed at protecting the rights of Congress under the Constitution and said Obama was ignoring the laws that it passes. The White House criticized congressional Republicans for considering a lawsuit against President Obama for his use of executive actions this year to move his agenda forward. White House spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters such a move, funded by taxpayers, would not be supported by most Americans.

Boehner said Obama takes unilateral actions in areas such as immigration. / GETTY IMAGES Game plan Boehner’s memo said he will bring legislation to a floor vote in July authorizing the House general counsel to file suit. The case would take months in the courts, but it would give Republicans new fodder to try to sway voters in November.

Butt-numbing cinema to avoid In theory, long movies aren’t bad. There are scores of movies that earn their length. Some are giant epics that wow with their majesty. Others use duration to comment on time as it passes, like Andy Warhol’s “Empire — eight hours of staring at the Empire State Building — or the 157-minute “Zodiac. But do you really need three hours based on an amusement park ride — especially if it’s the third of a four-part franchise? Do you really need a rom-com TV spin off that’s longer than some baseball games? Beware of these too-long movies, which will make you wish you were washing laundry or filing taxes with that valuable time instead. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge matt.prigge@metro.us

Indie spotlight. Docs highlight Whitey and Gore ‘Whitey: United States of America v. James G. Bulger’

‘Gore Vidal: The United States of Amnesia’

What: This documentary details the rise and fall of James “Whitey” Bulger, notorious South Boston crime boss.

What: Filmed shortly before his death in 2012, Gore Vidal finally gets his own documentary, which looks at his storied career and many tussles.

Just the facts: Director Joe Berlinger, with Bruce Sinofsky, directed the “Paradise Lost” documentaries, which helped draw attention to the West Memphis Three case. The lowdown: The pursuit of Bulger, once ranked just after Osama bin Laden on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list, would make a movie of its own. (And one with Johnny Depp is in the works.) But this doc focuses on the lead-up to the 2013 trial that ended with two life sentences for Bulger, which is fascinating in its own right. The evidence required to mount an air-tight case against Bulger turned out to be lacking; documents were missing or badly filled out and among

the witnesses too scared to testify, one wound up dead. Bulger’s testimony could also implicate not only other crime figures but corruption in the FBI. It’s a giant mess, and at times “Whitey” plays like David Fincher’s “Zodiac”: a mass of dead ends and bureaucratic incompetence that makes you wonder how justice is ever achieved, if at all.

The lowdown: No film could contain Gore Vidal, especially not an 83-minute one that has to contend with the pesky presence of Vidal himself. As pure exposition, this doc is adequate; as a portrait of Vidal on the cusp of the big sleep, it’s equal parts despairing and fascinating. What it really does is throw up its hands, as it should. Vidal is impossible to pin down — or at least that’s how he no doubt wished to be remembered. A walking contradiction, he was a

populist intellectual rejected by academia and sometimes only tolerated by the mainstream, if at all. Seen here not long before his death, he’s not happy and more than a little bitter. On the subject of his legacy, he says, “I couldn’t care less” with a depressing smirk that all but kills your dream of deriving joy from being right. MATT PRIGGE

First annual awards. Celebrities, athletes and activists are honored for furthering the LGBTQ civil rights movement. With Pride Week in full swing, Logo TV will honor several key people who have broken new ground for LGBTQ civil rights with their one-hour “Trailblazers Awards” special, airing tonight at 9. The event was taped earlier this week at The Cathedral of St. John the Divine and celebrities included Daniel Radcliffe, Adam Levine, Demi Lovato, Lance Bass and Pete Wentz. “Orange Is the New Black” stars Laverne Cox, Taryn Manning, Danielle Brooks, Samira Wiley, Lea DeLaria and Matt McGorry were also in attendance. We talked to Laverne Cox before the show to congratulate her on the show winning an award and she spoke excitedly about how much “Orange Is the New Black” has meant to the LGBTQ community. “Sophia gives transpeople an

affirming pop-cultural reference for their identities and has been so empowering for them,” she tells us. “On the show, we are dealing with LGBTQ identities and stories in a really complicated way, and womanhood in a really complicated way. Queer people feel like it’s their show. It’s a ‘finally’ kind of moment.” Matt McGorry, who plays John Bennett on the show, feels the same way. “It’s been above and beyond anything I really could have imagined,” he says. “To be a part of something that is inspiring change has just been absolutely wonderful. Laverne being on the cover of Time magazine is an enormous step in the right direction.” Tune in

Two other big award recipients will be activist Edie Windsor and her attorney Roberta Kaplan. Together, they helped win the Defense of Marriage Act case in 2013 exactly one year ago this week. “I don’t think any of us could have imagined this in our lifetimes,” Kaplan tells us. “When we started the case, five states allowed gay couples to marry. Today 19 states do. Change is happening very rapidly. No group in American history has achieved that kind of progress toward equality that fast.” Windsor agrees that there are many reasons to raise a glass: “It’s a lot of fun to all be together and celebrate. It’s a wonderful party.” In the same church that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. spoke at preaching about racial equality, Daniel Radcliffe, who has been involved with The Trevor Project since 2009, honored three young adults who are working to further LGBTQ civil rights in their communities and online. Between commercial breaks, Radcliffe went over to their table and talked to them for as long as he could. Laverne Cox also couldn’t resist running — in heels — over to hug and congratulate them. Adam Levine: ‘I did not have sexual intercourse with Lindsay Lohan’

It seems like Lindsay Lohan’s leaked list of sexual conquests is going to haunt every famous name it contains for quite some time. Case in point: Maroon 5 front man Adam Levine had to suffer Howard Stern’s interrogation on the matter. “By the way, you were listed on Lindsay Lohan’s sex list, that you had sex with her. I didn’t know this, Stern offered, to which Levine promptly shot back, “That’s not true. I did not have sexual intercourse with Lindsay Lohan. Stern

2

then pointed out that no one on the list has confessed to actually having earned his or her spot. “That’s because I think we’re being truthful, Levine responded. The Queen of Thrones

Queen Elizabeth visited the set of “Games of Thrones in Ireland earlier this week. She looked a little skeptical when looking at the Iron Throne, so we guess the cast doesn’t have to worry about her taking it over. The Queen also met several cast members of the HBO hit show, including Kit Harrington and Lena Headey. It’s fun to imagine the Queen and her husband being avid fans of a show like this, where nudity isn’t rare. LASSE E. KRISTIANSEN

DATING

It just became easier to be ‘You & Me’ When you’re away from your significant other, it’s easy to stay in touch with apps such as Snapchat, Instagram, text messages and so on. A new app called “You & Me” takes digital relationship maintenance one step further. The app combines some of the best sharing features of popular social media apps – such as videos, pictures and sharing a favorite song with your boo. You start by writing the name of yourself and your partner. Then the app creates a cute logo with the first initials of your names. You are then ready to share whatever with your loved one. It’s like sending a text message, but everything is here: the pictures, the videos, the songs,

the voice and the secrets. When you take a photo, there are filter options like the ones you’re familiar with from other picture apps, such as Instagram. That way you can always look your best when you send your boo a selfie. The app is also connected to Spotify, so you can send the perfect love song to keep things sweet between just the two of you. A really fun feature is “The Secrets.” You send a picture (maybe with a note), and your partner has to wipe the screen to see the picture and note. You can watch the picture repeatedly, but it’ll stay hidden for everyone around you until you wipe, allowing you to get creative with love notes or silly photos.

Online dating is a dirty little lie, part one There are many stories of couples who met online. They clicked from the first time they clicked: Love, marriage and kids are in their future, and they owe it all to meeting on a dating website. But is that the norm? To find out, I asked 1.6 million people on my Facebook page. The result: an outpouring of missed dates, mixed messages and misunderstood expectations.

Lack of mystery

The Human Element Beyond all the pseudoscience, online dating short-circuits the natural courtship process of men and women. Primal dating rituals and natural courtship don’t include posting a profile and a few pictures.

Jaded data Last year, the Huffington Post reported that a study funded by eHarmony found that as many as 35 percent of Americans now meet their spouses online. Sounds impressive, right? But if you read the complete study (and most people don’t), you will be quick to discover that “online” doesn’t just

mean dating sites. It means somewhere in the digital world of the Internet, which includes virtual worlds, chat rooms, multiplayer games and social networks. In fact, a recent study from the Association for Psychological Science found that although people are using online dating sites, the way people are actually finding spouses over the last several years remains largely unchanged. According to the study, 38 percent of people met a spouse at work or at school. Meanwhile, just 17 percent met a spouse on a dating site.

The science behind online dating Proprietary algorithms, tests

and questionnaires that promise to match you with a mate provide an air of awe and confidence. But the questions feeding these algorithms are highly suspect. First, to match someone with a potential mate, these questionnaires need to be answered honestly and accurately (and they aren’t). The questions these surveys ask are really about dating, not relationships, and there is a big difference between dating someone today and being compatible for the long term. These compatibility tests don’t take into account upbringing, childhood environment and/ or teenage influences, nor do they address changing attitudes and needs. And, again, this is all assuming the respondents are telling the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. How often do you think that happens?

Eight easy ways to make your relationship incredible

Up: Online dating just got smarter. Match.com is teaming up with Mensa, a high-IQ membership organization, to connect really, really smart people.

Down: “Harry Potter” star Rupert Grint was stunned to discover his profile on dozens of Internet dating websites after someone stole his bank card and signed him up on a search for love. Moral: No one is safe from online catfishing.

Joe Henry will take a dangerous title any day. / DANIEL WHEELER

Though Joe Henry is known for his elaborate titles — 2000’s “Richard Pryor Addresses a Tearful Nationâ€? probably being the most notable — a majority of the titles on “Invisible Hourâ€? are one word only, shining only the necessary amount of light on the characters within the songs, so they remain evocative and continue to unfold into reinterpretations. “You don’t know how to hear the song without the title,â€? he says. “I sit down to write and play with a notebook and ďŹ nd some point of entry — whether it’s an image, a title, a phrase — and just start putting it together to see what it oers. It’s the same way that Fellini said that as a ďŹ lmmaker, “You create a character and see what he has to tell you.â€?

von Henry getting a hands-on lesson about the temptations of a touring musician? “Obviously, he’s learning about how to survive on the road and how to take care of yourself when you’re traveling every day and playing meaningful performances, he says. “But none of that is lost on him. Henry shares that he has been teaching his son about the tricks of the trade from an early age. “I have a song from my album called ‘Fuse’ that’s a good example, he says. “It’s called ‘Monkey,’ and I say the word ‘monkey’ one time in the song, but there’s a repetitive chorus where I say ‘Maybe someday you’ll come back to me.’ My son was about 7 or 8 when that record was being finished, and hearing me listening to mixes in the car, he challenged me on why the song was not called ‘Someday.’ And I said, it’s because ‘Monkey’ is just a much better title. ‘Someday’ sounds vague and harmless. ‘Monkey’ sounds potentially nasty and dangerous! PAT HEALY @metrousmusic

Marissa Nadler Tonight, 8 The Sinclair 52 Church St., Cambridge $15, 18+, 800-745-3000 www.ticketmaster.com This buzzy local singersongwriter has a beautifully melancholic, ghostly sound and Gothic lyrics to match. It’s sort of the musical equivalent of grainy photos of abandoned farmhouses bathed in sunlit fog. Her siren voice has a fragile grip, and her lachrymose songs feel like they shouldn’t be listened to so much as sunk into like a warm bath.

Though Joe Henry is billing his latest tour as a solo acoustic venture, there is one person who will be joining him on stage for select songs: his 22-year-old son, Levon. “He’s on the other side of college, he lives in New York, went to the New School for jazz, and he was, for a time, working for my manager in New York, says the elder Henry, beaming with pride. “It started out as an internship he needed to do for his school program. He’s no longer working with the management office, but while he was there in the last throes of it, he was basically doing all of the grunt work, coordinating the logistics of the tour, etc. So at one point, because I was going alone, I said, ‘Hey Lee, I need a little bit of help, and you’ve already done all of this groundwork, so why don’t you come with me, sit in wherever it makes sense.’ Levon Henry is all over his father’s new album, “Invisible Hour, adding colorful and moody wind instruments to the epic narrative songs. It’s as if the jazzy flourishes of clarinets and saxophones set the scenery — a rain cloud here, a dust-filled beam of sunshine there — for his father’s poetic character sketches. So is Le-

There’s a riot of pinks and reds here, and oranges and yellows there. But this eye candy isn’t part of Liquid Art House’s current art exhibit. These slashes and stabs of vibrant colors are collected on the rhubarb-rosewater custard and the canvas of baby carrots, respectively. Their considerable visual stimulation is equaled d by the bold flavors, though: rhubarb and rose and raspberry; carrot and coconut and kale. The artwork in this gallery and restaurant, set in a beautitiful art deco building on a Back Bay intersection where six streets meet, changes every couple of months, and comes from an array of international artists. The rhubarb-rosewater custard is the work of dessert whiz Giselle Miller (Deuxave). Another sweet, coconut semifreddo, it lines up cool blond elements to equal as vibrant flavor effect as the red plate: lemon verbena, lime, anise, and hyssop layer the dish.

The canvas of baby carrots is chef Rachel Klein’s work. This Manhattan via Brooklyn native cut a swathe through Boston kitchens from the Seaport Hotel to the Mandarin Oriental. Among her new dishes at Liquid Art House are some proven favorites: The selection of Asian dumplings echoes Klein’s time at the late OM in Harvard Square. The wild S mushroom variety m with w hints of chive sits in a luscious porcini cream sauce. p But it’s not all plate painting: There’s There substantial whole animal roasts (book those in advance), a steak section — Klein uses Never, Ever meats raised without antibiotics, hormones, or animal by-products — with mixand-match sauces and sides. Among the fish entrees, a Faroe Islands salmon with dill oil pairs baby pink fish with orange salmon roe topping bright yellow quail egg yolks forming a soft, pastel array.

Seating areas

Comfort zones include a Mod-decorated siting room with cushions and couches. Also try Jack’s mamaliga: super-creamy corn porridge with a hint of honey and sheep’s cheese. Jack is Rachel’s father, but Dad’s version wasn’t like this. Klein tells us, “We sexed it up a bit. Something that can be said of much of the menu.

Gun control not Metro’s news oppression priorities are barely Re: ‘Guns make some safer’ there (Metro, June 25) Nobody is

coming after letter writer Pat Dougherty’s Beretta. The only gun-control measures to be proposed in recent years involve more comprehensive background checks, magazine bans and a renewal of the assault-weapons ban. There is no reason why safe, responsible gun owners can’t get behind these limited restrictions.

Re: ‘Cyclists get cheeky with bare-it-all ride’ (Metro, June 25) Let’s see — there’s an IRS scandal, a VA scandal, immigration crisis, the Middle East is falling apart, Russia is still active in Ukraine, etc., etc., and your lead story is about naked bike riders. Really? You call that news?

Republicans aren’t any more polite Re: ‘Kids should be off-limits to comic’ (Metro, June 25) Letter writer John Fox wrote about an imagined “uproar” that might have resulted if Cummings had joked about a liberal Democratic politician’s child rather than Sarah Palin’s. I fully appreciate and agree with the point; however, please don’t imagine the conservative right wing is any home to decency.

Republican chairman of 2nd Congressional District Johnny Rhoda commented to U.S. News that if Hillary Clinton tried to run for president in Arkansas she would be shot at the state line. Like Mr. Fox, I can only imagine the uproar that could’ve resulted if liberals threatened to shoot Mike Huckabee if he dared to enter, say, New York. DOUGLAS BROWN, VIA EMAIL

KG back in Brooklyn; Pierce next?

Kevin Garnett is not retiring just yet, as ESPN reported Wednesday that, “barring the unforeseen,” the former Celtics star will return to fulfill the last year of his contract with the Brooklyn Nets. This could throw a wrinkle into the Celtics’ plans if they intend on attempting to re-sign Paul Pierce this summer. Pierce will become an unrestricted free agent on July 1 but would likely be more inclined to spend another season in Brooklyn due to Garnett’s willingness to play and the fact that the Nets can pay him more than any other team.

STAY AWAY FROM OLDER PLAYERS LIKE BRADY Fantasy owners are often lured by the Sirens of big names. But Father Time remains undefeated, conquering every athlete who stands in his path. It becomes a value problem on draft day because we’re paying for previous production, not where these older players actually are on their career arc. Avoid the over-the-hill gang.

the farther they traveled and his accuracy was not at Brady levels, leading to his lowest yardage and touchdown totals since the 2006 season and lowest completion percentage since 2003. He says mechanical tweaks will fix the problems, but this is still a 37-year-old quarterback. The Patriots have also shown signs of switching to more of a power-run game, which will continue to decrease Brady’s volume. He should be a backup in most leagues this season.

Nearing the end, Frankly Frank Gore averaged a scary 3.65 yards per carry over his final 10 games last season — including playoffs — and had just one 100-yard outing across his final 13 contests. The 49ers are clearly transitioning toward the post-Gore era, as they’ve invested recent draft picks in Carlos Hyde and Marcus Lattimore. Both are candidates to steal reps from their 31-year-old leader as soon as this season, and we know once running backs start to decline they fall off the cliff quickly. Playing in the toughest division in football won’t help Gore regain his lost steps.

Tom still terrific? Yes, Tom Brady’s weaponry let him down last year. But he also saw his passes lose steam

Off the field, Ray Rice is facing a suspension for roughing up his fiancée in Atlantic City, New Jersey. On the field, it’s not much prettier. The tape shows Rice has lost the jumpcut ability and burst that made him so slippery to take down. It shouldn’t be that surprising for a player with 2,746 career touches between Rutgers and the Ravens. Bernard Pierce is going to open the season as the starter and has an excellent chance to stay ahead of Rice. Metro does not endorse the opinions of the author.

cally advance. Ghana is more of a threat than Portugal, because a U.S. loss coupled with a Ghana win would bring goal differential into it. The same is true for Portugal, but they have a minus-4 differential, while Ghana is at just minus-1 from its loss to the United States.

The United States squandered a 2-1 lead over Portugal with 30 seconds left and now needs to get a result in its final group match against Germany. A tie would send the Americans into the next round, while a win would see them win the group. It

Wink, wink U.S. head coach Jurgen Klinsmann was a legendary striker on the German national team. He parlayed that into a remarkable run in 2006 as head coach of their national team, when they shocked the world with a third-place finish as the host nation. He remains tight with

German-Americans Up and down the American roster there are players who not only play in the German Bundesliga, but claim German roots. Often, they have an American father who was a serviceman and a German mother. Deflated Just 30 seconds from three points and a guaranteed booking to the next round, the Americans fell apart after a superb game. They have to regroup against a better team. The backline fell apart early in the game and in the last gasps of stoppage time, and Michael Bradley hasn’t looked his usual self in the midfield. KRISTIAN DYER
