Teacher pleads not guilty to sex with a 13-year-old Somerville. Alexandra Romanos, 41, of Stoneham, was released on $50,000 bail.

“Thought for sure the wind was going to clown my umbrella in Boston’s swirling winds, but deft maneuvering kept it intact.”

BOSTON

A Somerville teacher accused of having a sexual relationship with a 13-year-old was released on bail Wednesday and ordered to stay away from children under 16, except for her own. Alexandra Romanos, 41, pleaded not guilty on Wednesday. She was indicted by a grand jury earlier this month on charges including aggravated rape and disseminating material harmful to a minor. In a barely audible voice, Romanos answered “not guilty” when a court clerk asked how she pleads to the charges. She and her lawyer, Carmine Lepore, refused to comment to reporters after the hearing. Assistant District Attorney Marisa Tagliareni did not request additional bail and said

that both sides agreed to have Romanos’ district court bail transferred to the superior court, meaning Romanos was able to stay out on $50,000 bail. Her conditions of release were still imposed, which include wearing a GPS monitoring device, staying away from Somerville schools and having no contact with children other than her own. Authorities have accused Romanos, a teacher at the East Somerville Community School, of initiating a relationship with the teen. “We allege that this defendant manipulated an impressionable young teenager,” Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said in a statement after the indictment. “These allegations are made all the worse since this defendant was entrusted to care for children as a Somerville teacher.” School officials have placed Romanos on leave. A New Hampshire teenager who was missing for nine months and mysteriously returned home in July “suffered numerous acts of unspeakable violence” at the hands of the man authorities charged with kidnapping her, according to a family lawyer. Abigail Hernandez, 15, said she was abducted by force, the lawyer said in a statement released late Tuesday, the first public disclosure that she faced violence during

her confinement. “Abby was violently abducted by a stranger. For many months, she suffered numerous acts of unspeakable violence,” Michael Coyne said. “Through her faith, fortitude and resilience, she is alive today and home with her family.” A week after Hernandez’s return to her home in Conway, state prosecutors charged Nathaniel Kibby, 34, with felony kidnapping for

abducting the teen in October 2013. Their investigation has focused on Kibby’s trailer home and a backyard storage container in the nearby town of Gorham. “It is going to be a long process in pursuit of justice for Abby and for Abby to get physically and emotionally stronger,” Coyne said. Kibby’s public defender has said his client is innocent. He is being held on $1 million cash bail. REUTERS

Boston may ban Haystack app The City Council is considering banning Haystack, a new mobile parking app that allows users to buy and sell public parking spaces. The app’s founder Eric Meyer spoke at a hearing Wednesday on a proposed

ordinance that would prohibit the selling, leasing or reserving of public ways for private gain. The council may vote on the ordinance as early as next week. “A vote in support of this proposed ordinance and this time is a vote against technology, against innovation,” Meyer said at the hearing. They have been playing with a new slogan: “Educate, entertain and empower.” “I think the city will benefit from everything we bring to Boston, and I hope it will help make learning fun,” said GreenFest founder Karen Weber. “I think the city is doing a lot in the way of green innovation and the environment, but there is always more that can be done.” For those more interested in the “entertain” aspect of the event, organizers are promising plenty of performers. Metro buys City Paper in Philly Newspapers. Metro U.S. stands separate from its sister papers across the globe. When Philadelphia City Paper moved into the 14th floor of the Graham Building in Center City — a space already occupied by Metro Philadelphia and its staff — a wall of cabinets was pushed together as a barrier between the two newspapers. On Aug. 13, Metro tore down that wall. Metro, Philadelphia’s No. 1 daily newspaper, announced Wednesday that it bought the gritty alternative weekly. “I am very happy to welcome City Paper, the 32-year old award-winning alternative institution of Philadelphia, to the Metro family,” said Yggers

Mortensen, Metro U.S. publisher and CEO. “I am proud the Rock family has chosen Metro to continue to develop City Paper’s iconic brand. Their dedication to City Paper and the Philadelphia community will benefit us for years to come.” City Paper, which was awarded the 2014 Keystone Press Award for best major weekly newspaper with a circulation under 10,000 in the state, was purchased by the Rock family in 1996. WHAT WOULD MARYAM DO? As a father of two daughters, I appreciate the many challenges facing young women these days. They are pelted with impossibly perfect air-brushed bodies in magazines. They’re told looks don’t matter even as they are straightjacketed with expectations about fashion, makeup and hair. They encounter woman-on-woman friction. And of course, they endure the endless dumbassery of men. So you can imagine my delight this week, when I read something wonderful: A woman has won a Fields Medal. I realize this might not sound impressive if your first question is, “What the heck is the Fields Medal, anyway? For those of us who struggled with College Algebra 101 (“Can I have all the drama majors please raise their hands? Yes, thank you.) the medal is like

Both of my daughters thought it was hilarious, but then they are in math-heavy fields at the ridiculously challenging Georgia Institute of Technology, so they’re used to seeing me befuddled. Anyway, I suspect that Mirzakhani’s work is somehow connected to all that. But frankly, I don’t care what she is doing, I’m just glad she’s doing it and being recognized. I hope a lot of people feel that way. I hope they write her name down, tape it to the refrigerator or punch it into their iPhones as a daily reminder of the real value of smart, hard-working women. And maybe amid all our keeping up with Kardashians and fretting over Bachelorettes, some more daughters will be urged to ask when making their life choices, “What would Maryam do?

NYC suburbs hit by flash floods after record rain

More than a foot of rain hit parts of New York’s Long Island on Wednesday, enough to set a preliminary state record, triggering flash floods and swamping cars on major roads that were turned into rivers during the morning rush hour. Much of the rain fell during a particularly intense, two-hour burst while commuters were traveling to work. A total of 13.26 inches of precipitation was measured at MacArthur Airport in Islip. Canning. Don’t be intimidated, says ‘Top Chef’ judge Hugh Acheson There’s probably one thing standing in the way of your cooking aspirations: your tiny kitchen. Enter canning, which “Top Chef” judge Hugh Acheson will be promoting Saturday in New York City for International Can-It-Forward Day. The presentation will also be broadcast live online at FreshPreserving.com. “Canning doesn’t have to be the doomsday prepping you remember from your great-grandmother,” Acheson says. “You can preserve small batches from the extra tomatoes or berries you got in your CSA or from the local farmers market.” Acheson, a James Beard Award-winning chef, started cooking in Canada when he was 15, but it wasn’t until he moved to the South that he began to appreciate canning. “To me, it’s a gateway of getting people to cook. It’s not about high cooking skills, but all about being involved with seasonal food,” he says.

The lowdown. Put together, the cast of “The Expendables 3” has enough checkered pasts (and presents) for everyone. The Expendables are back (some of them, anyway). A few, such as Bruce Willis, have left, and still more AARP-aged bad-asses and some youngins have joined up. These are men (and one woman) with long, colorful careers, on screen — and in some cases, off. Here are the skeletons in their closets:

1234 FILM

12

Sylvester Stallone

Wesley Snipes

Dolph Lundgren

Kelsey Grammer

Merits: As an improbable Oscar-winning screenwriter, Sly’s a ringleader for aging ass-kickers everywhere.

Merits: A reliable action god, Snipes is also a very good dramatic actor; see “White Men Can’t Jump” and “Jungle Fever.”

Merits: The one-time He-Man was also in “Red Scorpion,” produced by Jack Abramoff. And he boxed Rocky.

Merits: He scored back-to-back sitcom monsters with “Cheers” and “Frasier,” and has since reinvented himself as a sociopath on “Boss.”

Sins: Stallone has plenty of dodgy films on his CV. Worse, he has a habit of calling others — like Bruce Willis — greedy, when few have made more unnecessary sequels.

Sins: There’s a reason Snipes hasn’t been on screen since 2009’s “Brooklyn’s Finest”: He was in jail. In 2006, it was revealed Snipes had for years not filed his federal income tax returns. He was convicted and sentenced to three years. In this, his comeback film, he’s actually broken out of prison.

Sins: Lundgren chose what turned out to be a career as a second-rate action star over a Fulbright Scholarship to MIT. “Universal Soldier” is better than science, looks like.

Sins: You wouldn’t know it from the neurotic, buttoned-up characters he tends to play (or his conservative politics), but Grammer has suffered substance abuse problems — which isn’t really a sin. He is also the alleged star of a sex tape, though the footage has never surfaced. Alas.

GRUMPY OLD MEN

Good boys (and girl)

Antonio Banderas, Jet Li, Kellan Lutz and Ronda Rousey Antonio Banderas went through a divorce recently, but he’s otherwise just a nice-seeming guy who likes being a ham. Jet Li is too busy perfecting his martial arts to get into much trouble. Kellan Lutz was in some terrible vampire movies, plus a dreadful Hercules movie, but his real life seems fine. Real-life MMA star Ronda Rousey’s only sin appears to be trash-talking — as if no fighter had ever done that.

Age of the oldest: Harrison Ford

Harrison Ford

Merits: Probably the last classical action hero, this bullet-headed god cranks out one fun, ’80s-style genre movie after another, the best being the “Crank” pictures.

Merits: He’s Han Solo, Indiana Jones, Jack Ryan and that slimy guy from “The Conversation.”

5 6 7 89

Mel Gibson

Merits: One of Hollywood’s finest actors, Gibson can do intense and charming and much in between.

Sins: Mel Gibson has some issues. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

matt.prigge@metro.us

Sins: When he was younger he was forced by his father to be a street seller, peddling fake perfume and jewelry to make ends meet. He was even doing this when he was a model, even though he didn’t want to. But he got over that pretty quickly.

Robert Davi

Merits: One of the ’80s most oily baddies, Davi haunts “The Goonies” and plays one of the more intense Bond villains in “License to Kill.”

Sins: Davi’s rap sheet is pretty clean. But we’ll bet a guy this interesting has gotten himself into some amazing trouble.

Sins: He’s a notorious crank — or at least that’s his persona. It’s not unearned: He understandably doesn’t like dumb “Star Wars” questions, but he always seems intimidatingly irritated. If you ask him good questions — say, about his friendship with legendary French filmmakers Jacques Demy and Agnes Varda — he’s a peach.

Arnold Schwarzenegger

Merits: He’s that guy from “Junior.” Sins: While he was campaigning for his first term as governor, allegations emerged about sexual misconduct, as well as shockingly misogynistic comments about women.

‘The Giver’ •••••

‘The Giver’ vs. conformity Conclusion

But there are bigger problems

1 2

Independence

Jeff Bridges teaches Brenton Thwaites about the mysteries of the planet in “The Giver.” / THE WEINSTEIN COMPANY

“The Giver” is not just another YA movie. In fact, its source is one of the prototypes of this new wave. Lois Lowry’s novel came out in 1993 and, as many teens know, it has been a favorite among outside-the-box-thinking educators. A film version has been in the works for ages. Costar Jeff Bridges — who plays the titular elder tasked with passing his knowledge on to Jonas — has been with the project for many years. Bridges originally wanted to make it with his father, Lloyd, playing the Giver.

But “The Giver” distinguishes itself in a few ways. It’s about a boy, for one, in a genre that has drifted away from the Y chromosome. Then again, it’s not really strong on action — one of the hallmarks of YA movies. In fact, the action scenes are weak —strange, since director Philip Noyce has made films such as “Patriot Games.” It’s more interested in the cerebral, with Jonas spending most of his screen time hanging with Bridges’ Giver, who’s basically the Haymitch Abernathy of this world: the one weary elder who actually knows about humanity’s dirty past.

Conformity

In “The Giver,” a young adult named Jonas (Brenton Thwaites) discovers that his clean, peaceful, lily-white utopia is actually a dystopia, with “elders” (led by Meryl Streep, in an undermining white shaggy ’do) who’ve created a peaceful community by forbidding feelings, knowledge of history and anything from the outside world. The thing is, the film is fighting its own internal battle against the cliches of what has become a packed YA movie genre. How’d that go?

Unfortunately, the long gestation period not only robs it of some of its power, it forces it to adopt certain (but not all) genre tropes. Like “The Host,” it partially ruins the surprise of its world in the opening narration track, with a driven, flat-voiced Jonas spilling most of the rules right away. There’s a strict curfew and weird bicycles. There are no surnames, dreams or animals. Touching people who aren’t family members is forbidden, and everyone must use “precise language” (which seems a little vague). Everyone’s a mere cog, and so, to a degree, is the movie, which of course could become a franchise.

MATT PRIGGE The business between The Giver and Jonas feels original, @mattprigge but little else in the film does. In fact, when “The Giver” isn’t matt.prigge@metro.us reminiscent of recent YA movies, it’s reminiscent of other very famous dystopias. The notion of a cut-off civilization isn’t new, and the killing off older people while pretending to send them to a glorious after life — as happens here — is very “Logan’s Run.” Granted, not many saw the Swedish film “The Bothersome Man,” which also depicts a bland utopia, but that film did it with far more rigor, as well as actual jokes.

A more crippling issue is its relentless, oppressive humorlessness. “The Giver” has a premise that could at least spawn some amusing jokes, but it can’t even get much mileage out of having our lead get schooled by The Dude. It’s a very earnest film, made for people who’ve never seen a dystopian film and might mistake it for original. The scenes between Bridges and Thwaites are the best, with The Giver sending Jonas on little mind trips. These sequences are done in mad, sensuous rushes. Other stylistic moves are less successful. It tries to do “Pleasantville,” starting in blackand-white and slowly gaining more color. But it’s sloppily performed, and the colors are too muted to have impact. It’s just another way the film’s noble intentions are ruined by a so-so execution.

Indie spotlight. Two old-timers have fun in Iceland ‘Land Ho!’ ••••• In this mash-up of a road movie and a geezers-on-the-prowl comedy, two ex-brothers-in-law (Paul Eenhoorn and Earl Lynn Nelson) decide to bro down

13

on a trip to Iceland.

The lowdown. Is “Land Ho!” an indie with mainstream aspirations or a mainstream film with indie aspirations? It’s both. Despite a cast and crew that hail from microbudgeted films, the material

is unapologetically populist. It’s a crowd-pleaser, even cliched. But it’s cliched in a way that embraces the cliches; it doesn’t fall into them by rote or for cynical reasons. Still, it isn’t that mainstream: The stars are given the space to gab in long chatty scenes, even as the camera soaks up the bold

colors of Iceland. It’s also another kind of film: the kind that makes stars out of its odd-couple leads. Nelson, a real-life Kentucky surgeon, is a natural who you never catch acting and whose life force is so strong it seems he could burst through the screen. MATT PRIGGE

Talk. Gibson swears he’s not the bad guy — in ‘Expendables,’ that is Mel Gibson is the villain in “The Expendables 3”, taking on Sylvester Stallone’s crew of aging action heroes, but that piece of info is news to Gibson himself. “I didn’t read it thinking I was the bad guy, you know? In fact, I didn’t know I was the bad guy until I saw it last night,” he insists. “I thought Dolph

Lundgren was the bad guy, so it’s a surprise to me and I’m kind of shocked and a little offended. I wanted to be the love interest, but there was no one to love, really.” Joking aside, Gibson was eager to put his own spin on the character of Conrad Stonebanks, a former Expendable turned arms dealer with

While Gibson clearly had a ball with the “Expendables” franchise, he’s got other work on his mind, primarily directing. “I think the most fun you can have standing up is directing a film. It’s, like, my primary want. That’s my gift, I think, direction. I’m going to pursue that,” says Gibson, who won

a directing Oscar for “Braveheart” in 1996. “I’ve got a few irons in the fire. It doesn’t pay to talk too much about it, because industrial espionage is rife. The minute you say anything, somebody swipes the idea. It’s like, ‘That’s a good idea. We should do that.’ It ends up on TV or something, but that’s OK too. I’ll direct TV. It’s great. TV is getting, like, amazing. I definitely have my sights set on that.”

Q&A SYLVESTER STALLONE: ROCKY PULLS SOME PUNCHES As head Expendable, Sylvester Stallone has never been one for too much humility, and given the success of his “Grumpy Old Men with Guns” franchise, he has no need to be. That can lead to some pretty impressive statements from Sly. Here are some of our favorites from his “Expendables 3” press tour:

get on the elevator and there’s Paul Newman. And you’re not prepared for it. You think you’re prepared for it. And then you wonder if they feel the same way about us. I’m sure they do.”

On whether he has considered retirement

“What happened with Bruce Willis? Well, things didn’t work out and then Harrison Ford came along. It’s just the way it is. It’s nothing personal. It sounded like it got personal and I’m sorry it did sound that way, but it was just actors talking and things move on.”

“Why? I’m not ready to sit at home and play with Pomeranians 12 hours a day. I’m just not ready. Remember in old vaudeville, there was a cane that came out and snatched you off the stage? Well, I’m waiting for that. Until they just hook me off the stage, that’s it.”

Working with the new, younger cast members “I remember the first time I came [to Hollywood]. I was like these guys. I

That approach might work for a news item, but not for music, which requires a more instinctual approach. Gibney sticks to the facts, and on one level that’s good: He re-contextualizes songs and deals with Kuti’s politics (and flaws). But Gibney has no rhythm, and his jumping-around structure is literalminded and messy. MATT PRIGGE

Cook-O. The Food Network stars face o in a battle between kids.

OLATE DOGS

Rachael Ray and Guy Fieri are getting pretty used to being a team. The duo have worked together on quite a few Food Network shows. The latest place you can catch the two of them hanging out? The return of their family-oriented cooking competition, “Rachael vs. Guy: Kids Cook-Off, which begins its second season Sunday. The series pits two teams of kids, coached by one of the titular chefs, against each other, with the prize being a cooking Web series of their own. Since it’s a competition, we thought we’d get Rachael and Guy’s takes on the show and working with each other. What to watch

Going beyond cooking advice? Ray also had a TV pick for us: “An Honorable Woman, the Sundance miniseries. “It’s so good! It’s great, enthuses Ray. Watch it tonight with Rachael, in spirit ,at 10 p.m. on Sundance.

On why she’s doing the show

On why he’s working on the show

“The kids’ initiative I have spends a third of its money on scholarships, a third of its money on eradicating hunger and a third of its money on lowering obesity rates. I think that kids getting excited about cooking improves all of those areas, and a show like this is really important. ... To get kids exciting other kids about cooking, being in a kitchen, caring about where their food comes from and feeding themselves and their loved ones are important things.

“We have childhood diabetes, we have childhood obesity. These are not things that we’re supposed to be having our kids experience. ... So this is an opportunity for families and kids to recognize that kids can actually participate in cooking in the kitchen — kids as young as 8 and 9 years old — and the parents can get that revelation of, ‘Wait a second, we cook dinner every night; why don’t I have my child helping me?’

On being a young cook herself “I think I was 11 the ďŹ rst time I prepared a meal by myself. It was my mom’s birthday, and I made lasagna roll-ups with spinach and mushrooms and a Gorgonzola wine sauce. I made the fabulous wine pairing of a mimosa.â€?

On her co-star “I describe Guy very appropriately as my 12-year-old friend who’s always getting me in trouble with my mom. ... We love hanging out and eating together and pulling pranks on each other. ... He scares me within an inch of my life at least three or four times per run. ... He’s a goofball, and I love him for it.

On his co-star “I think Rachael’s pretty transparent on a lot of things. She’s a very smart businesswoman. She’s probably one of the most giving people that you’ll ever know. She’s incredibly generous and just takes care of everybody, but she’s a ďŹ erce competitor. Rachael and I are best friends, I have an incredible relationship with her, but the gloves are o. When it’s go time, it’s go time.â€?

On why the media loves to hate him “I couldn’t even tell you. I think it’s just people are bored and looking for something to talk about. LISA WEIDENFELD @LisaWeidenfeld lisa.weidenfeld@metro.us

Justin Bieber heading to anger-management class

Here’s one less thing for Canada’s reigning boy-king to worry about: Justin Bieber avoided jail time in connection with his Miami DUI arrest by pleading guilty to a lesser misdemeanor charge of reckless driving and resisting arrest without

violence — though wouldn’t it be great if there were a “resisting arrest by whining charge? In addition to paying a fine, Bieber has to make a $50,000 donation to charity and take an anger-management class, according to Variety.

The lowdown on fall coats Trends. Before you buy the most important item in your wardrobe for fall, consider these. It’s two weeks until Labor Day, yet the only thing we want to do is shop for fall. Chalk it up to years of excitement-filled back-to-school prep — that, and the lust-worthy coats we saw coming down the fall/winter runways. It started with robecoats at Richard Chai — the plaid one will be ours! Then came nubby shearlings and colorful statement-making furs galore (BTW, Shrimps makes the most awesome faux versions). If you’re going to blow a rent check on fashion this season, we’d make an argument for outerwear. Here are three of the top fall runway trends and best budget-friendly options.

What women want in bed, part 2 Last week, I talked about what women really want in bed. Here’s Part 2 of the series, in which we explore the power of human touch.

Make it all about her “Nothing better than a massage with slow circles on my back and baby oil down my legs.” YOLANDA K.

“I want him to look at me, directly into my eyes, especially as he puts it in. OMG.” SAMANTHA D.

For exclusive commentary, c visit Metro.us/blogs.

She wants to feel special. She wants to feel desired. And she might want to be spoiled, too. But let’s remember that she is also allowing another human being inside her body, and that comes with a combination of comfort, submission and trust. Bottom line: Take the time to make things about her, and she will more than likely willingly reciprocate. A little extra effort goes a long way.

Go down, now and always “I like when he does it, but I like knowing that he wants to. That he wants to taste me is such a turn on.” ANNA G.

Down: The funniest man in the world passed away this week. But let’s get something straight: We didn’t lose him to suicide— we lost him to depression. RIP, Robin.

About 75 percent of all women never reach orgasm from intercourse alone. That means if he’s not going down, there’s a good chance she’s not getting all she can out of the situation. If she allows him to put his tongue in the holiest of holies, he better not only value it, he needs to know what he’s doing. And that actually means: How does she like it, when and how often? Oral sex is a special level of intimacy. It creates a trust when you allow someone to experience your body so closely. And that trust and allowance can provide for incredible physical and mental release and pleasure.

Kissing provides a closeness that is personal, passionate and communicates many things — from the first kiss onward. What she wants in a kiss: Start gently. Let your mouth wander as she allows, but pay attention to her responses. Light strokes on cheeks, neck and back get extra points. A light caress is definitely recommended, and should give way to a harder touch as you continue. Timing is everything.

Online dating. With Willow — the new app that values brains over beauty — users get chatting right away Are you looking for love, but wish the world of online dating was a bit less superficial? The new app Willow turns the concept of a traditional dating app on its head — by emphasizing a user’s personality over their profile photos. “Our philosophy is simple,” reads the app’s official description. “We believe the best way to get to know someone, and find out whether or not you like them, is by talking to them!” Instead of having a potential match’s photos be the first thing a user sees when checking out a profile, Willow asks users a series of questions right off of the bat. Founder Michael Bruch told Elle magazine that he hopes that the app will spark meaningful connections. Starting a conversation is easy. Users just have to swipe through a series of questions other members have posted. “What I realized was missing from a dating app, or an app that is meant to be social, was an actual conversational aspect,” Bruch says. “I wanted to create an app that got people talking.” LAKSHMI GANDHI

Covers story

Going on a tribute Spree Though the Spree are not performing the remixed versions live, they have been throwing in a few unexpected covers into their sets, such as the Four Seasons’ “December, 1963 (Oh, What a Night)” in addition to usual covers like “Live and Let Die” by Wings and “Porpoise Song” by the Monkees. “We can basically do any song out there! That’s why covers are so fun for us,” enthuses DeLaughter. “We can nail it because we have the whole sonic landscape covered. We’ve done everything from Nirvana to the ‘Rocky Horror Picture Show.’ We can go anywhere we want, and when you know that and have that kind of power, and when there are so many wonderful songs that you love, it’s hard not to dip in there and grab a couple every now and then.” PAT HEALY @metrousmusic

Hot tickets. Tim DeLaughter discusses the ways in which touring with a band that sometimes includes more than 20 members is both a labor of love and financial insanity. For the past 14 years, the Polyphonic Spree has been known for packing as many members as possible onto stages and creating music as jubilant and colorful as Also onstage

the uniforms the members don. The songs on last year’s “Yes, It’s True” album stayed true to that recipe, so it’s surprising that there are moments on their brand new album, “Psychophonic,” (which came out Tuesday) that sound a bit darker. It’s especially surprising when one considers that every single song is from the “Yes, It’s True” album, but remixed by different DJs. Detached from the spectrum of the Spree’s ornate instrumentation and placed on new backgrounds, the vocals of leader Tim DeLaughter are rawer and the cold electronics on a song like “Carefully Try”

bring out a desperation not as detectable in the original. “I knew once we gave the tracks to capable engineers who are DJs that they were going to go crazy with it,” says DeLaughter. “I knew they were

going to turn it into something that you just wouldn’t imagine was there.” When it comes to things you wouldn’t imagine were there, the experience of seeing the Polyphonic Spree live is so life-affirming that you might not realize the amount of effort that goes into making it work. “Polyphonic Spree is a labor of love, but it’s also a financial insanity,” says DeLaughter. “We get paid like a four-piece band, but we have four bands in our band.” DeLaughter has remortgaged his house twice for the band, and they’ve been signed

I can’t really ignore it. We’ve had many, many, many, many talks of ‘We can’t keep doing this.’ … [But] it’s just kind of hard to just turn off and ignore something that gives you that much joy and fulfillment.” Also onstage

SULLIVAN & SON TOUR

It’s surprisingly slow on Lansdowne Street for a Saturday night. There’s no game at Fenway, and no show at the House of Blues, which makes for a rare, peaceful stroll down the street without the roving packs of bros and the women who tolerate them that usually comprise this ecosystem. At Loretta’s Last Call, the new country-music and southern food-themed offering from the Lyons Group, the crowd is starting to build all the same. For now, there’s a seat at the bar, which, if you didn’t pay attention to the “country trappings, would seem like any other Lansdownian touristdamaged theme park. But behind me on the wooden stage there’s a man playing acoustic covers of country songs, and on the walls there are hundreds of photos of old country music stars. Soon enough a nice fella in a cowboy hat from Houston comes over to talk. What does he want? It turns out he just wants to make a friend. We don’t do that sort of thing in Boston, I tell him, half-kidding. Then again, who knows, maybe we do, especially after a couple of mason jars of moonshine. Music in your ears Trainspotting. A local vinyl expert tells us not to fear “High Fidelity”-type record store clerks. Vinyl stores catered to a niche market way before MP3s existed. Hence, In Your Ear Records survived the digital revolution’s evisceration of national retail chains. After 20-plus years in the basement of 957 Comm. Ave.,

record collectors remain IYE’s bread and butter. But it’s also a rad spot to browse heaps of used CDs, thumb through old ’zines, and find out that an 8-track kind of looks like an NES cartridge. We chatted up original and ongoing co-owner Reed Lappin. About two years ago, cassettes looked to be coming back — for about a week. Well, when you go back to the beginning of CDs, cassette sales were on the

rise until the major labels jumped the prices, so they were higher than CDs. That was in the late ’80s. They killed the record and the cassette at that point, to some extent. I’ve read they wanted everyone to rebuy all their old Beatles albums or whatever on the new format. We used to have one guy who joked about Pink Floyd’s “The Dark Side of The Moon.” They’d have the 20th anniversary edition, and then the 30th anniversary

American is wrong to side with Israel in Gaza conflict

The truth is that you wouldn’t need to take out a full page ad pledging support for something if everyone was supporting it. The truth is we shouldn’t be pledging support to one side and then handing over clean-up money to the other. Also, shame on Howard Berner’s letter to the editor (‘Palestine deserves its fate’ Metro, Aug. 12) for trying to dehumanize 9- and 10-year-old Palestinian children!

I think Gov. Patrick crossed the line with the “Massachusetts stands with Israel.” I don’t stand with killing innocent families and children in Palestine. “I’ve never seen such massive destruction ever before,” was how Peter Maurer, president of the International Committee of the Red Cross, described Gaza last week.

true grasp of what is going on. You, like many others do not understand because you listen to one glorified side of the debate, not both. First off it is called the OCCUPIED Gaza Strip, meaning that Israel has pretty much turned it into a cage for these people and they are suffering. Bombing schools and killing an overwhelming number of civilians is a war crime. The United Nations said as much, but the United States disagrees because we are aiding them. Palestine had a chance have its own statehood and the United Nations would

probably have granted it, but guess who vetoed them: The United States. Now by no means do I hate the Jewish people but Israel’s government, like ours sometimes, is very wrong. To say that a people deserve the type of atrocities that are occurring is very dangerous and uneducated on the issue at both ends. CASEY ZINITI, VIA EMAIL

TRUE SLEEPERS ARE THE GIFTS THAT KEEP GIVING FANTASY

ADAM LEVITAN, LIVING THE FANTASY METRO’S FANTASY GURU BREAKS IT ALL DOWN

We should bust some bubbles nice and early: Cordarrelle Patterson is not a sleeper. Neither is Gio Bernard, Andre Ellington or Toby Gerhart. In order to find a real sleeper, we’re going to have to dig deeper and be willing to take risks. These guys fit the bill:

SPORTS

Eat your Wheat Last year, Emmanuel Sanders and Jerricho Cotchery combined for 113 receptions and 16 touchdowns from Ben Roethlisberger. Both are gone now, leaving second-year man Markus Wheaton entrenched as the starting “X” opposite “Z” Antonio Brown. It’s the same role Mike Wallace used to play, which is interesting because Wheaton drew Wallace comparisons coming out of Oregon State. This is a guy with 4.4 speed, one that played ahead of fellow Beaver Brandin Cooks in 2012, and he’s expanding his route tree rapidly.

A 2015 return?

Zach Ertz had 36 receptions for 469 yards in his first season in Philadelphia. / GETTY IMAGES NFL risers

ZE stands for TD NFL news Cincy’s Marvin Jones was a likely breakout star for 2014, but no longer. A broken foot for a receiver is bad news as we’ve seen recently with players like Hakeem Nicks, Julio Jones and Aaron Dobson.

We started to see a little of what Zach Ertz is capable of late in his rookie year, as he caught five touchdowns across the final nine games (including playoffs). Now Ertz is gaining more traction in his second season and is ticketed for a major role boost as the Eagles try to replace DeSean Jackson.

Jonathan Grimes, RB, HOU: Grimes is now second on the depth chart behind injuryplagued Arian Foster.

Bernard Pierce, RB, BAL: He’s outplaying Ray Rice at camp as they adjust to Gary Kubiak’s one-cut scheme. Bouce-back year for Pierce.

The Stanford product is a walking red-zone mismatch thanks to his unique athletic ability and 6-foot-5, 250-pound frame. Ertz is currently the 11th tight end off the board in fantasy drafts, often available in the 10th round.

In a good place If this was August of 2011, we would have told you that

wide receiver Kenny Britt is on the verge of absolute superstardom. Since that time, he’s torn his ACL, has had a fistful of run-ins with the law and was benched by the Titans last season. But Britt is still only 25 years old, and now he’s reunited with old friend Jeff Fisher as part of a St. Louis receiving corps that’s among the worst in the league. Britt reportedly has his head on straight and is healthy.

Bird’s-eye view

Patriots vs. Eagles: Three things to watch

on the gridiron, but doomsday, preseason injury scenarios always lurk. It’s never an exact science as to how long Brady will play in preseason games, but as a frame of reference — Brady played the first two series’ of the second preseason game last year against Tampa Bay. He played a full half in the Pats’ third preseason game last year, a blowout loss to the Lions.

After several joint practices this week, the Patriots and Eagles will hit for real Friday (7:30 p.m., NFLN) in New England’s second game of the preseason. A few looks to keep an eye on:

1

Cross your fingers Some mix of anxiety and happiness will fill the souls of Patriots fans Friday as Tom Brady will launch his first passes on an NFL field since last season’s AFC title game. It’s always good to see No. 12

DARRELLE REVIS IS LIKELY TO SEE SOME ACTION AGAINST PHILLY. GETTY IMAGES

3

2

Flags on the Island The Patriots’ A-lister on the other side of the ball, cornerback Darrelle Revis, is also expected to see limited action against the Eagles at Gillette on Friday. While Revis

has drawn glowing praise on the whole during the first few weeks of camp, he did have some issue with the referees in joint practices with Philly this week in Foxboro. NFL refs, at camp to help introduce and emphasize rules for 2014, flagged Revis for three penalties during one practice. “It’s the beginning stages and the only thing we can do is ask questions,” Revis said. “There were a lot of flags out there, but at the same time, it’s a new rule. So we’re trying to get acclimated and do the best thing we can do by covering receivers in the preseason game and the upcoming season.”

3

Jimmy eat world There was no doubt that Jimmy Garoppolo won Round 1 of the preseason QB battle against Ryan Mallett. If Mallett does not show improvement Friday or a week later against Carolina, there’s the chance that the former Arkansas star will be cut. Mallett looked slow and awkward against Washington, completing 5-of-12 passes for 55. He did not throw a touchdown. Garoppolo did find the end zone and completed 9-of-13 for 157 yards. The rookie out of Eastern Illinois wasted little time getting rid of the football and his actions were fluid. MATT BURKE

Lester flirtation begins Former Red Sox and current A’s lefty Jon Lester both seem genuinely interested in reuniting next season, just two weeks after a blockbuster trade. “At the end of the season it’s not going to change my mind about going back [to Boston] if they are aggressive and competitive and do the things they say they’re going to do,” Lester told the Boston Herald. “Boston is definitely a place I would go.” Red Sox manager John Farrell told WEEI that he is hopeful Lester returns. “We know that once the free agent season opens, he’s going to have an opportunity,” Farrell said Wednesday. “He’s durable, he’s productive, he’s done it in Boston. There’s a great comfort level with everyone here.”
