About 100 students from Madison Park Technical Vocational School in Roxbury protested Tuesday after spending the first four days of school without class schedules. Students told reporters covering the walk-out that they spent the first few days sitting in classrooms with “nothing to do” because they either hadn’t been given schedules or had been given schedules that were riddled with errors. Administrators finally handed out schedules at the end of the day Tuesday, following the unrest. Mayor Marty Walsh called the scheduling problems “completely unacceptable.” METRO

Friday marks the 40th anniversary of the implementation of a court-ordered desegregation of Boston’s schools. As students were shipped from their neighborhoods into new, previously segregated territories, there were protests, riots and acts of violence both in the streets and in the schools. The fallout from Judge W. Arthur Garrity’s decision, which came to be known as the “busing crisis,” cemented Boston’s reputation as a racist city. “This is how Boston unfortunately is portrayed,” said Raymond Flynn, the former Boston mayor who was a Southie state representative at the time. The legacy of the forced busing is still a matter of debate. Flynn says while Garrity’s decision was the right one, the implementation of the court order was a disaster.

“The real story that’s never been told is that this had no positive influence on improving the quality of education for all of Boston’s children,” he said. “It did nothing to educate children or prepare them for a more promising future. The children and parents suffered.” Kevin Peterson, a senior fellow at UMass Boston’s Center for Collaborative Leadership, has a decidedly different take. He says the takeaway has been positive: Boston has become less divided since 1974, in no small part due to the forced desegregation. “The legacy, 40 years later, is

“It did nothing to educate children or prepare them for a more promising future. The children and parents suffered.” Flynn positive,” he said. “There were extreme growing pains in the city, beyond which we matured and learned lessons. I think we’re more united now than we’ve ever been before.” While acknowledging that the initial years of desegregation were ugly, Peterson said the forced busing was “a wise but painful decision” that turned out to be “extremely instrumental in terms of initiating a new era in Boston, which [previously] stood as an example of northern racial segregation.” Flynn maintains there should have been more communication with parents before the implementation of the forced busing. “How do you draw up a plan — the most significant blueprint in the city of Boston

— and you don’t talk to the people who are most affected?” he asked. “Trust — that’s a big word. There was no trust in Boston at the time.” Flynn also suggested that a significant injection of government cash to improve the city’s inferior schools could have eased the transition and possibly diffused some of the tension. “It was a very divided time,” said Flynn. “And nothing else works if you have a racially divided city. Public transportation doesn’t work, education doesn’t work, sports programs don’t work, nothing works. Boston gradually came together.” DANNY MCDONALD @DMacCash

Elias Moe of the newly opened NexGen Bicycle Company Ltd. takes a spin on an electric bike in South Boston on Wednesday. / NICOLAUS CZARNECKI, METRO

Electric bike shop opens in Boston Southie. NexGen Bicycles claims to be the city’s first cycle shop to specialize solely in electric bikes.

A new bicycle shop that opened in South Boston this week is catering to the cycling community’s electric sect. Nexgen Bicycle Company, located at 121 Boston St., sells electric and foldable bikes, which, unlike traditional bikes, can be taken onto the MBTA during rush hour. The company also converts regular bikes to electric, and designs and builds custom-made electric bikes. To NexGen operations engineer Elias Moe, 34, the perks of going electric are clear. “If someone has a 5- or 10mile commute, hopping on an electric bike is way faster than using a combo of walking and [the T]. Plus, a lot of people

can’t show up sweaty and gross to work,” said Moe, referring to the lack of pedaling necessary with electric bikes. Like many Bostonians, the Allston resident cycles to work every day, “sometimes riding the lightning, sometimes using the quads,” he said, referring to switching it up between electric and traditional bikes. Considering the speediness of electric bikes, one might wonder whether cars and pedestrians will be bothered by battery-powered cyclists zooming past them at 20 miles-perhour, but Moe believes the city is ready for it. “[Going electric] isn’t about replacing your bike. It’s about replacing your other modes of transportation,” he said. “Boston has the cycling infrastructure. I could definitely see its popularity growing, not just [here], but all over the country.” MORGAN ROUSSEAU @MetroMorgan

It’s electric! Pros: •

and rely on the electric system.

They’re fast — reaching speeds of 20 miles per hour - the federal limit for what’s legally considered a bike vs. a motorized vehicle.

Cons: •

They weigh between 10 and 20 pounds more than a traditional bike.

They’re easy — allowing the cyclist to opt out of pedaling

They cost more. NexGen bikes run up to $1,800.

Thirteen years ago today while biking to work, I noticed something dierent about the city. A lot of cars were listening to the news, but I couldn’t hear what was being said. After getting to my oďŹƒce shortly after 9 a.m., I immediately saw what they were listening to. I will always remember where I was at that exact moment. In Boston there was a lot of fear that we, too, would be a target, so many of the downtown buildings were vacated and their employees sent home, myself included. After the second tower fell, I walked my bike home from Fort Point to Cleveland Circle. There was no way I could bike home. I can still vividly remember that walk home. The city was so

quiet. There were thousands of people making their way home, but not a sound was made. It was surreal. Cars were driving in slow motion and no one used their horns. Pedestrians were walking in a trance and their faces were in total shock. They walked and looked exactly like me. Boston was an unfortunate part of the tragedy on Sept. 11, 2001, and we, too, lost a lot of people on that terrible day. There is a beautiful memorial in the Boston Public Garden called the Garden of Remembrance that commemorates the lives of the 200+ people from Massachusetts who died 13 years ago today. When you have time, please visit that memorial and read their names so that they are never ever forgotten.

Obama outlines a series of steps to eliminate ISIL Funds. The president urged Congress to approve $500 million to provide more arms and training to rebel groups in Syria. President Barack Obama vowed on Wednesday to attack Islamic State militants “wherever they exist” in a speech to Americans that laid out a strategy for expanding U.S. air strikes in Iraq and, for the first time, striking targets in Syria. United States refers to as ISIL, has carved out what it calls a “caliphate” from broad areas in Iraq and Syria and uses savage methods that have included the beheading of two Americans. “This counterterrorism campaign will be waged through a steady, relentless effort to take out ISIL wherever they exist using our air power and our support for partner forces on the ground,” Obama said, opening the door to air strikes against ISIL in Syria. Pursuing the Islamist militants inside Syria would complement an expanded military campaign to back government forces in Iraq following the formation of a more inclusive government in Baghdad.

Cara Delevingne’s love of bacon outweighs her aversion to horrific pain, as the model revealed a new tattoo dedicated to the most delicious food ever — on the bottom of her foot! Delevingne posted an Instagram photo of the new tat along with the caption “It happened” — which could be the caption for every post on Instagram. The tattoo, by the way, is just the word “bacon” with an ellipsis after it. I do love me some good, well-placed punctuation, so good on you, Cara. The photo demonstrates some other interestingly positioned body art, such as the lion on her right pointer finger. What purpose does that serve? Is it to point, “Hey, you!” and then “ROAR”?

‘Dolphin Tale 2’ Perhaps you thought the first “Dolphin Tale” — about a tail-less dolphin who gets a tail — rather overextended a story barely meaty enough for “60 Minutes.” Apparently, you were wrong. This time she needs a new female companion, a story that evidently requires two more hours.

‘The Drop’ James Gandolfini’s final performance is in this Dennis Lehane movie, with Tom Hardy as a man caught in the middle of a robbery that exposes typically Lehane-ian rifts in his urban neighborhood.

4

‘A Master Builder’ “My Dinner with Andre” gabbers Wallace Shawn and Andre Gregory again reunited for this Henrik Ibsen

adaptation, with the former as a cranky, dying architect who gets a visit from a young woman who claims they were once lovers.

‘The Last of Robin Hood’ Dakota Fanning may be 20 now but she’s still playing young in this docudrama about Beverly Aadland, a wannabe actress in the 1950s who at 15 became the ladyfriend of debauched movie star Errol Flynn (Kevin Kline).

as a role

Until she read the script for “The Last Days of Robin Hood,” Dakota Fanning had never heard the story of notoriously loose Hollywood star Errol Flynn (Kevin Kline) dying in the arms of teenager Beverly Aadland (Fanning). But it’s a role she loved performing, even if now, at 20, she’s pretty much done with playing characters who are younger than her actual age.

Researching Aadland “I really didn’t do that much research. I looked at certain things, like how she looked and how she wore her hair and what her makeup was like. There’s an article from her perspective, but there’s a lot of things that are from other people’s perspective. She got caught up in this whirlwind and she was very naive. You do see her find her way and mature and be happy and strong — and then you also see her get lost. She didn’t have anybody to rely on after Errol died. It was interesting to play someone who went full circle and around again.”

Those 1950s costumes “The first week you wear the clothes, it feels so foreign and strange. By the end it’s your dress. It feels so normal. And retro’s in now. Reviews. Where fantasy meets reality at New York Fashion Week Rodarte

Designer: Diesel Black Gold

The designer: Tory Burch

The look: Island romance

The look: City girl exhales

The runway: Most designers have been abandoning the classic blue jean for culottes this season. But denim is Diesel’s bread and butter, and its Black Gold presentation had it in spades, in high-waisted skinny jeans and A-line skirts in dark washes or dyed bright red and baby blue. There were also lace-up bra tops, leather skirts and jackets with metal studs and minidresses in an all-over star print.

The runway: Forget Ikat — Tory Burch showed fresh, islandinspired prints (colorful basket weave, soothing shibori and happy cypress leaves) over relaxed silhouettes (slouchy pencil skirts, fringed shorts and roomy tunics) that brought a bohemian, laid-back vibe to her sophisticated career girl.

The runway: Could J.Crew’s love aair with sequins be over? The brand certainly backed o for spring. Designer Tom Mora explained that summer months are for relaxation. That sentiment came across in the oversized and easy shorts, jackets and button-downs, most of which were fastened with drawstrings and boasted justpulled-out-of-the-suitcase wrinkles. And for those who love the glitter, Mora, citing Ibiza as an inspiration, tricked out a piece or two.

Rodarte just dropped the mic on fashion week. After last season’s esoteric tribute to “Star Warsâ€? — really, how many women would wear a gown emblazoned with a giant Luke Skywalker? — sisters Kate and Laura Mulleavy’s dazzling spring outing mixed the right amount of fantasy with commercial appeal. The show opened with a series of rued chion blouses paired with skinny-skinny high-waisted jeans or skirts constructed with a mish-mash of denim, knit and netting. Cool, boxy anoraks — some embellished with net, others with paillettes — topped the looks. But that was just the warm-up. The sisters’ talent for cutting and pasting couture elements (like hand-embroidered lace, sequins and crystals) until they create a breathtaking collage hit its crescendo with a series of sparkling gowns in seafoam, aqua and navy (inspired by tide pools they visited as children). The show’s dreamlike backdrop brought to mind another iconic ’80s ďŹ lm: “The NeverEnding Story.â€? These ladies deďŹ nitely hold on to Fantasia. TINA CHADHA

Insta-worthy: The anoraks

The takeaway: Expect to sport looser clothing. TC

Earlier this summer, music video masterminds OK Go returned with a new creation: a series of optical illusions set to a new song, “The Writing’s on the Wall.” The song, part of a new EP called “Upside Out,” is the first new music from the band since their 2008 album, “Of the Blue Color of the Sky.” A full-length album, “Hungry Ghosts,” comes out Oct. 14. Lead singer Damian Kulash says that’s pretty normal for the band, and they generally take about four years to make a new album. “We take so long making records in part because we’re not the fastest songwriters on the planet, but in part because we spend so much time touring and making videos.” It’s evidently pretty complicated to build and operate a massive Rube Goldberg device, as they did for “This Too Shall Pass.” A few things have changed about the writing process over the years, though. Kulash points to the band’s desire to write more “undirectedly,” by which he means letting the music dictate what a song will be about, rather than starting with an idea and working back to it. The result is what Kulash calls a more focused album. Kulash admits, “I kind of

hate writing lyrics,” saying, “I have so much fun playing with the sounds, and then you wind up with this music, where if things have gone right, it goes in five directions at once. It’s something that you can’t communicate, or at least I can’t communicate verbally.” He points to the way writing the music can create a sound with “lust and fury and joy and melancholy all at once.” Setting all of that to words can mean letting go of some feelings. “When something is both joyful and melancholic at the same time, do you write melancholic lyrics or do you write joyful lyrics? … Words are so specific. They always have to mean something so literal.” Despite the songwriting challenges, he seems pleased with the result. “Since we don’t go in with this preset idea of what’s going to come out, it feels like the things that appealed to us were more direct and more central and more to the point.” LISA WEIDENFELD @LisaWeidenfeld lisa.weidenfeld@metro.us

THE DAN BAND

After closing their last season with a highly acclaimed, tremendously successful production of “Into the Woods,” expectations were high for the Lyric Stage Company’s latest production, “Sweeney Todd.” Back-to-back Sondheim seemed like a win-win for the Lyric. While there is much to enjoy about the darkly comic musical, it lacks the wow factor of its predecessor, never really capturing the horror and humor that makes “Sweeney” such a classic. Part of the problem is that Sweeney Todd himself (Christopher Chew) never feels angry or diabolical enough to exact such violent revenge. As his coconspirator Mrs. Lovett, Amelia Broome also lacks many of the

traits that make her character such a brilliant juxtaposition of daffy and dark. The duo is often overpowered by the orchestra and both feel a little uncertain during “Have a Little Priest.” Broome also misses the mark with a fairly staid rendition of “By the Sea,” a number in which Mrs. Lovett should be vamping it up, getting her sexy on to woo

Sweeney. The barber chair that features prominently in Act 2 also proves to be problematic. Ideally, it would operate with guillotine-like precision, inducing bouts of uproarious laughter and groans of disbelieving horror as Todd meticulously dispenses with anyone who stands in his way. This chair feels like a prototype not ready for action, as the actors approach the clunky setup with great trepidation. Despite its problems, the production boasts exceptional, nearly show-stealing performances by Phil Tayler as dimwitted Tobias Ragg and Lisa Yuen as the Beggar Woman. The ensemble also hits their collective mark with strong, spirited vocals and a wonderful sense of the dark, funny, ghastly tale of “Sweeney Todd.” If only Mr. Todd and Mrs. Lovett were that seductive. Their only positive accomplishment was the money they earned for entertaining both voters and politicians with gotchas. Reporters are entertaining customers instead of educating voters. Even surveys by the news media and by comedians with people standing in line at the polls to vote have shown repeatedly that most voters are too ignorant to vote intelligently.

Would you please tell me why reporters don’t want to communicate like teachers? Look at the federal tax code. Like an annual sign of autumn, the panic sets in quickly for fantasy football owners. It wouldn’t be the Monday after Week 1 if someone didn’t want to trade Eddie Lacy for Brandin Cooks. We don’t want to sleep on important things we learned in Week 1, like how Zach Ertz’s usage makes him the real deal and Le’Veon Bell’s weight loss has made him far quicker. But we also don’t want to overreact to fluky first impressions.

Expected to play the roleplaying Kevin Walter spot in Gary Kubiak’s offense, Steve Smith instead erupted in his first game as a Raven for seven catches, 118 yards and a touchdown on a whopping 15 targets. It wasn’t nearly as good as it sounds. Smith took advantage of a blown coverage on a broken play to nab an 80-yard touchdown, meaning his other 14 targets produced six catches and 38 yards. That’s the kind of inefficiency that got the 35-year-old cut in Carolina. Smith is an excellent sell-high candidate, while Torrey Smith makes for a nice buy-low.

Baltimore’s Wei-Yin Chen flirted with a perfect game at Fenway Park on Wednesday, not allowing a Boston hit or a base-runner into the sixth inning as the Orioles cruised to a 10-6 victory and a three-game sweep. The Red Sox would post five runs in the ninth inning but it barely made a dent into the Orioles’ lead. Red Sox starter Brandon Workman worked just three innings, allowing five earned runs on six hits. He walked five. The Boston bullpen wasn’t much better as Craig Breslow and Edward Mujica each allowed two earned runs. The Orioles (86-59), well on their way to an AL East title, held an 8-0 lead midway through the fifth inning. Xander Bogaerts and Carlos Rivero each homered for the Sox (63-83). Against the Saints and Browns, matters were much dierent as New England beat the clock against New Orleans and recovered its ďŹ rst onside kick in nearly 20 years in beating Cleveland. The only reason the Browns game will be thought of fondly around here is solely because of its outcome, a one-point Patriots victory. Not only was Rob Gronkowski injured that Sunday, the New England defense made quarterback CORDARRELLE PATTERSON Jason Campbell look DOMINATED THE RAMS SUNDAY. brilliant, as Campbell GETTY IMAGES passed for 391 yards, three touchdowns and zero intercep-

over as Patriots head coach in 2000. Against Turner-coached oenses, Belichick is 10-2 and his defenses have allowed nearly 19 points per game. But Turner oenses have fared better lately against the Pats, averaging a little more than 24 points per game in the last four meetings. This includes the 26 points the Browns scored in Foxboro last December. Cleveland had two receivers have 100-plus yard receiving outings that day as Josh Gordon (151 yards) and Jordan Cameron (121 yards) torched the Pats’ defense. The Vikings oense Turner is working with now may very well have more weapons than that 2013 Cleveland team that nearly upset the Pats. Cordarrelle Patterson — a wide receiver — actually rushed for 102 yards against the Rams last Sunday. Greg Jennings is more than capable as a receiver and then there is, of course, running back Adrian Peterson. MATT BURKE
