Transit officials working with Harvard University are hoping to turn an old Allston freight yard into the site of a $25 million Commuter Rail station that will provide a much-needed transit connection to South Station and the Back Bay. The proposed station, tentatively named West Station,
would be built at Beacon Park Yard on the Framingham/ Worcester Commuter Rail line, officials recently announced. The station would link Allston with North and South stations and possibly Kendall Square. The hefty price tag will be paid for by a combination of public and private funding, with Harvard University taking on a third of the cost. “The fact that the station is becoming more real and more tangible is something I’ve gotten a lot of great feedback on from the Harvard community,” said Kevin Casey of Harvard’s public affairs office. The station will be part of

It’s a pretty big change.” One possible outcome of the new station will be relief for the overcrowded Green Line. “It’s hard at this point to fully predict what the ridership will be and where it will come from, but this will add

SHOULD YOU BUY OR LEASE YOUR CAR? I’m thinking of getting a new car, but my friend said she got a really good deal on leasing a car. Are there any beneďŹ ts to leasing over buying? Whether you’re looking to buy or lease a car, it is important to keep in mind that there is no universal “best answer.â€? It depends on your personal financial circumstances and transportation needs. The most obvious difference between leasing and buying is that consumers can make a smaller down payment if they are leasing because they aren’t buying the car outright. Leasing also allows the consumer to avoid taking out a loan to cover the car’s full value. Another benefit to leasing a car is that you don’t have to worry about the future market value of the car because you will simply return the vehicle after three years, at most. Also, the overall mileage a consumer puts on a car can be a factor. If you drive over 100,000 miles a year, leasing

On the other hand, buying a car is the preferred method for most people for good reason. Consumers can keep the purchased car for a long time, and this can be much more cost-effective in the long run. Remember, whether you’re leasing or buying, be sure to look for the brightyellow Lemon Law sticker that informs you of your warranty rights should something go wrong with the car.
I have two friends who have been called by scammers pretending to be from the IRS. How can I tell the dierence between a scammer and an actual IRS agent? Our Consumer Hotline has recently received a lot of complaints about this scam. Typically, the consumer receives a call from someone claiming to represent the IRS, who threatens legal action unless the consumer pays “the amount owed.â€? One trademark of this scam is that the scammer usually demands the money be paid to them in an untraceable way, through a prepaid card or a wire transfer. The IRS will never ask for money this way, and will not use threats to collect the debt. Also, ask for notification in writing. Legitimate debts should always be documented in writing, but scammers will likely not do this because it creates a paper trail.

Dallas Ebola patient ‘fighting for his life,’ says head of the CDC CDC. Ten people have been identified who had direct contact with Duncan as being at greatest risk of infection. The first person to develop Ebola in the United States was struggling to survive at a Dallas hospital on Sunday after his condition worsened to critical, the director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control said. Thomas Eric Duncan became ill after arriving in the Texas city from Liberia two weeks ago — heightening concerns that the worst Ebola epidemic on record could spread from West Africa, where it began in March. Leave Prince George alone (for now, at least) If anyone can successfully take on the paparazzi — or, in this case, one individual paparazzo — it’s Prince William. His Kensington Palace office issued a royal statement that William and Duchess Kate have “taken legal steps to ask that an individual ceases harassing and following both Prince George and his nanny as they go about their ordinary daily lives.” William and wife Kate “understand the particular public role that Prince George will one day inherit, but while he is young he must be permitted to lead as ordinary a life as possible.” That seems reasonable enough, but that “as ordinary a life as possible” bit has got to be on a pretty impressive sliding scale when you’re talking about a member of the British royal family. Still — points for effort.

Franco and Rogen look naked, but not afraid
Checking in with some of Hollywood’s biggest names to see what they’ve been up to — in their own words, in 140 characters or fewer. Today, Seth MacFarlane is sensing some tension, Liam Payne maybe shouldn’t be tweeting and Ricky Gervais is trying to keep things ethical. @SethMacFarlane: Gosh internet, you look mad. Is everything okay? @Real_Liam_Payne: I may or may not b a little drunk @rickygervais: None of my jokes were tested on animals.
We don’t always stop to think about the indignities some actresses suffer for the sake of entertainment. Zoe Saldana admits that her “Star Trek” uniforms often boldly go a bit too far up the thigh. “I just remember always being exposed, no matter how hard I would try,” Saldana says, according to E! News. “I would tell [costume designer] Michael [Kaplan] that we had to work on this and [he would say], ‘But it looks so cute.’” It’s tough to argue with that. So how did Saldana know that the skirts might be a little too revealing? Her helpful co-stars. “I kept being reminded by all my male cast members that I was flashing,” she says. I would sit down and it’d be like, ‘Oh, Zoe, cross your legs.’ And I would say, ‘They are crossed.’ ‘Well, then put something over that because I’m just seeing everything.’”
Seth Rogen and James Franco had a busy weekend hanging out together — literally hanging out together. Franco posted a few pictures of himself and Rogen cavorting around naked to his Instagram feed yesterday and used the phrase “Naked and Afraid” in the caption, leading to speculation the duo is going to appear on the Discovery Channel’s show of the same name. FIGHTING AN INVISIBLE BATTLE Unfortunately, it’s difficult to pick just one topic to address during National Mental Illness Awareness Week, which began Sunday. So many recent tragic events have thrust mental illness into the spotlight: the suicide of Robin Williams, the Santa Barbara killing rampage and veterans struggling with post-traumatic stress. And these are just the stories that made the headlines; there are far more going untold among the nearly one in five American adults who suffer from a mental illness, according to National Institutes of Health data. Many are fighting quiet, private battles — with disorders ranging from moderate depression and anxiety to schizophrenia — to avoid the stigma that persists despite efforts to debunk myths, change attitudes and reform policy. Those who suffer include people of all ages, from every ethnic, racial and socioeconomic background. But because the vast majority of

The rate of adults with mental illness was highest among those aged 26 to 49 (21.2 percent), followed by adults 18 to 25 (19.6 percent), then by those 50 or older (15.8 percent).

Caitlin Moran. The British author wants women to have fun again Caitlin Moran’s protagonist in her new novel, “How to Build a Girl,” is a work in progress. But she doesn’t need anyone’s help — especially when it comes to sex. Johanna Morrigan’s gluttonous embrace of the world extends to her libido, something not commonly addressed in books about 14-year-old girls, and not because that impulse isn’t there. And it certainly didn’t wait to be awoken by a man, a criticism Moran has leveled at many of the current entries in the YA genre. At the U.S. launch of “How to Build a Girl,” Moran
discussed what’s wrong with sex for women (of any age) and modern female protagonists. Another kind of teenage girl: “I wanted to write about a horny teenage girl I don’t see often in popular culture, [to] reclaim the word ‘slut,’ basically.” What’s missing by omitting women’s perspective: “In this book [the first in a trilogy], Johanna doesn’t feel confident enough to let a man give her pleasure. She’s never seen a man making a woman come, so she doesn’t even know where that would happen in the sex.”
there are reasons why you’re into that sex and why it satisfies you, why that’s what you need. But [Anastasia Steele] clearly doesn’t have the psychological makeup or background.” When things go wrong, maintain perspective: “To write a fairly funny, accessible book about the realities of having sex as a teenage girl, you have to realize early on that life divides into two kinds of experiences: The first one is awesome experiences, and the second one is terrible experiences that will later make amazing anecdotes.”

people between the ages of 8 and 15 with a mental illness received no mental health services in the previous year, either because of shame, not knowing where to go for help or a distrust of mental health professionals. In extreme cases, they may not even know they’re sick. But no one has to suffer alone. Here are resources that can help.

How porn warps women’s view of sex “If you’re a woman, very often, you’re not kinda going, ‘I’m having sex,’ you’re thinking what he’s thinking. You’re going, ‘Wow, I must look really good doing this; he must be really enjoying that.’ And that’s because female sexuality has been mediated through the male gaze. Because of pornography, women are lying there being a porn director in their head, never thinking about what they want to do next. That’s why [Johanna] starts off with a wank — the first thing she does, you realize that she is in touch with her own sexuality; she knows how to please herself.” EVA KIS @thisiskis

Creating a support system for women of color in tech Entrepreneurship. Developing a path to success is key. When Kathryn Finney founded digitalundivided — an organization devoted to engaging minority communities with the tech world — she didn’t know quite what to expect. It was 2012 and it didn’t seem like there were a lot of resources available to African-American women in the field. “We had no idea who was going to come,” says Finney
of digitalundivided’s first FOCUS100 conference, held almost two years ago. “No one had done a conference about black women in tech before.” Finney began her own site, The Budget Fashionista, during the early days of the fashion blogosphere in 2003. The experience helped her see firsthand the challenges that many black female entrepreneurs in tech face. “I was the only black person at one conference and one of three women,” she says. “I remember just how marginalized we were. Everyone just kind of ignored me.”
In the years since then, Finney says she’s thought a lot about how other women and people of color can be given opportunities to break into the often insular world of tech. We asked Finney to share some of these lessons with us. Don’t try to be the official spokesperson: As many tech companies have gone through some soul searching about diversity in recent months, there have also been some highprofile comments from some techies decrying the need to recruit from underserved communities. “For the most part I don’t engage [with those people],” says Finney. “I don’t look

Embrace your outsider status “The best way to handle it is to embrace being the unicorn,” says Finney of often being the only woman of color in a room of executives. “It’s not your job or responsibility to give racial-sensitivity lessons. In fact, it distracts you from your ability to grow your business.”
at that as my job. Our responsibility isn’t to diversify tech. Our goal is to help black women get into the tech pipeline.” Create a path for others: To do that, Finney and digitalundivided are concentrating on helping women of color find opportunities that suit them. Part of the problem, she says, is that many people have a misguided idea of what working in the field means and are discouraged from pursuing a career in it before they even begin. “We have to show people the path and show what the end of the pipeline looks like,” says Finney.
Give entrepreneurs the support they need: Digitalundivided also runs the FOCUS Fellows program, an eightweek course that guides selected entrepreneurs through the ins and outs of running a successful business, obtaining funding and more. Creating a strong support system for women in tech, says Finney, is key to success down the line. “You’re kind of like the mafia,” she says of her group. “Once you’re in, you don’t leave.” LAKSHMI GANDHI @LakshmiGandhi lakshmi.gandhi@metro.us
CAREER LESSONS FROM GEN Z
How do you learn how to establish a career in this new economy? Look no further than the current generation of young people — that is, those 20 and younger. To uncover some interesting revelations about the newest generation, Gen Z, I partnered with the third-largest staffing organization in the United States, Randstad US, on a global study analyzing how Gen Z’s views of the workplace compared to Gen Y’s. Here are a few ways that Gen Z will make you rethink your career:
1
Being loyal to your company is a good thing. Gen Z has observed that job hopping can be detrimental to your career by watching Gen Y. If Gen Z sets out to become more loyal than Gen Y, they could be better positioned to climb the corporate ladder with haste.
By the numbers A majority of Gen Z sees Gen Y members as:
56% Being open-minded
55% Offering new ideas
Gen Y (born between 1982-1993) can take tips from Gen Z (born between 1994-2010), which has new ways of defining careers. / FUSE
2
Money isn’t everything. The recession was a major wake-up call for Gen Y, and instead of pursuing meaningful work, they often have no choice but to go for the money. Gen Z, on the other hand, sees each job as an experience that can help them build a career they truly love.
3
Help each other out. Nearly half of the older generation surveyed say they associate Gen Z with being lazy, while the younger generation has a positive view of its older peers. The lesson from Gen Z is that instead of stereotyping others, try giving people a chance.
4
Have an entrepreneurial mindset. Gen Z sees entrepreneurship as a potential career path and an alternative to a corporate job. These days, building a successful career means being more self-sufficient and entrepreneurial than ever.

Pats quiet critics, slam the Bengals NFL. The Patriots dominated Cincy Sunday night, 43-17, and are now 3-2 on the season. In less than a week, the Patriots went from owning the status of a “down, out and possibly dead dynasty right back to the status of an “elite AFC contender. Meanwhile, the Bengals’ status as the lone undefeated team in the NFL lasted just over three and a half hours. One of the more emotionally charged Patriots (3-2) teams in the Bill Belichick/Tom Brady era shredded the Bengals, 4317, Sunday night at Gillette Stadium, just six nights after being blown out themselves by the Kansas City Chiefs. Brady’s first pass of the night was a 20-yard bullet to Brandon LaFell and the Pats quarterback actually ran it for six yards four plays later, firing up the typically murmuring Gillette Stadium crowd and giving the Pats instant momentum against one of the top defenses in the league. Stevan Ridley capped an efficient opening drive for the Pats with a 1-yard touchdown run. The Pats went up 14-0 on their next offensive series as Brady connected with Tim Wright for a 17-yard score. Much of the credit for the Pats’ defensive dominance can be given to cornerback Darrelle Revis, who blanketed star receiver A.J. Green. Green was held to just two catches for 19 yards in the first half. MATT BURKE @BurkeMetroBos

Report: ‘Tension’ exists between Brady and Patriots Tom Brady is not happy with the Patriots and their personnel moves, and the Patriots are dubious as to whether or not the 37-year-old quarterback is still an elite performer, according to an ESPN report that was published Sunday afternoon, ahead of the Pats’ Sunday night game against Cincinnati.
