‘Farewell, Tom: Boston Mayor Thomas Menino reflects on his past, looks to the future’
Tom Menino, the city’s longest serving mayor who led the city in the aftermath of the Marathon bombing and was said to have met literally half of Boston during his tenure, died Thursday morning, mere days after announcing he was ceasing his cancer treatment. He was 71. Menino, a Democrat and Hyde Park native, was first elected as mayor in 1993 and would go on to serve five terms. He did not seek re-election last year. Menino, as mayor, was known for his dedication to neighborhood constituent services, his ubiquitous presence in the city and his verbal gaffes. One of Menino’s most iconic moments occurred during the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombings. Menino, who had just had surgery and was hospitalized at the time, checked himself out of the Brigham & Women’s to lead the city in its recovery. “It had a calming influence on so many Bostonians,” said City Councilor Michael Flaherty who ran against Menino in the
Five things we’ll miss about Menino His undying love: With a broken leg, the mayor emerged from his hospital bed to comfort his city in the wake of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, and even shakily rose to his feet from a wheelchair to address mourners at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross.
1
His handshakes: With a reputation as a personal and affable leader, Menino was said to have met about 50 percent of the city.

His LGBT stance: In 2012, he wrote to Chick-fil-A saying the restaurant chain “doesn’t belong

2009 mayor’s race and lost. “It was just a testament to his courage, to his fortitude … Tom Menino is a legend. Tom Menino is Boston.” The city’s first Italian-American mayor, Menino was known as a proponent of gun control and a defender of LGBT rights.
in Boston” because of its opposition to gay rights. He also led the annual gay pride parade. His Menino-isms. In 2012, Menino flubbed the names of Celtics players Kevin Garnett and Rajon Rondo, saying “K.J. is a great... but Hondo’s really the inspiration. I mean Hondo drives that team.”

His mumbles. The tonguetied mayor took his nickname “Mumbles” with a grain of salt, saying he wasn’t elected because he was “a fancy talker.”
5
He refused to march in the South Boston St. Patrick’s Day Parade because the organizers did allow LGBT groups to march. He also said he would work to stop Chick-fil-A from opening a store in the city in response to that group’s opposition to same sex marriage. His tenure saw the completion of the Big Dig, the country’s largest public infrastructure project that was much delayed and over-budget. He fostered what became known as the Innovation District, an area in the Seaport intended to facilitate entrepreneurship.
Before being elected mayor, Menino served as a city councilor for a decade. In his 40s, while on the Council, he earned a bachelor’s degree in community planning from UMass Boston. He was City Council president when then-Mayor Ray Flynn was tapped for an ambassadorship to the Vatican. Menino ran in a subsequent special election, won, and would go on to serve as the city’s executive for 20 years. City Councilor Tito Jackson, speaking in front of City Hall on Thursday, recalled the mayor’s work rate. “He went to every ribbon cutting. I was running at-large ... and he took me to this martial arts studio ribbon cutting in West Roxbury. There were 26 people there,” he said. “But just that he would take the time to give them the time and respect … He showed through hard work you can impact the world.” Just last Thursday, Menino, who had been in the midst of a book tour, announced he would be stopping his cancer treatment to spend more time with his family. Menino to Walsh: ‘Take care of the people’ Standing in City Hall Plaza Thursday afternoon, Boston Mayor Marty Walsh said that Menino told him during their last conversation, “You’re going to be a great mayor as long as you take care of the people of Boston and keep the people first.” Walsh said city employees considered Menino a mentor and a father figure. “He was a mayor for all of Boston,” said Walsh. “He had a heart big enough for everyone in our city.”

School cops armed with pepper spray? Boston. The public schools are mulling whether to arm officers with the tear-inducing agent. Boston schools are considering arming school police officers with pepper spray in order to “add another layer of security to help protect students and staff.” However, at least one city councilor has dismissed the idea as inappropriate. “It’s absurd,” said Matt O’Malley, who serves as the vice chairman for the council’s education committee. “I don’t see any upside to outfitting them with pepper spray. It can
be dangerous. If you deploy pepper spray in a cramped space like a classroom or a school hallway, it can be dangerous.” Boston Public Schools are in the midst of a series of community meetings discussing the idea. According to a statement from the district, the intent to develop a pepper spray policy has been “in the police officers’ contract for several years.” The officers do not currently carry pepper spray, according to the district, because clear guidelines regarding training use protocols need to be developed first. The issue is expected to go before the Boston School Committee later this year. According to the website for the Boston Public Schools,

New Bedford. Baker’s sad fisherman story is 5 years old, smells fishy to some
Man dies after Orange Line incident A man succumbed to his injuries Wednesday night after he apparently leaped in front of a moving Orange Line train at Haymarket Station, prompting a rescue and snarling the evening commute. Transit police said the man, who was not identified but was described as a white man in his 40s, was struck by a southbound train around 5:40 p.m. while trespassing in the right of way. Boston Fire Department personnel extracted him from beneath the train, police said, then Boston EMS provided emergency treatment and transported him to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. Transit police said at 8:30 p.m. that the man had died. Transit Police detectives are investigating, but foul play is not suspected. METRO

After tearfully recounting a run-in with a burly New Bedford fisherman during a live televised debate Tuesday night, Republican gubernatorial candidate Charlie Baker’s campaign revealed that he actually met the fisherman in 2009 or 2010. During the debate, Baker and his Democratic opponent Martha Coakley were asked about the last time they cried. Baker recalled meeting a “big huge man, completely soaked in sweat and saltwater. Baker said the unnamed fisherman told him his two sons had turned down college football scholarships so they could follow in their father’s footsteps. “I ruined their lives, Baker said, quoting the man. The emotional story sparked questions within New Bedford’s tightly knit fishing community, whose members said they did not know of any fishermen that fit Baker’s
In his words The Boston Globe reported that Baker told reporters Wednesday, “Every time I tell [the story], it’s like it happened five minutes ago, as far as I’m concerned.â€? •
That same day, Baker told the AP, “The story itself was based on an encounter that I had in the campaign in 2010. He certainly existed and I certainly talked to him.
description. Baker told the Associated Press Wednesday that he couldn’t recall if the New Bedford meeting happened in 2009 or 2010. In response to the same question, Coakley said she cried earlier that day during a memorial service for a friend who died of leukemia, the same disease that claimed her mother’s life. MORGAN ROUSSEAU

Screaming movies Marathon. Halloween is the time to feast on candy, as well as bloody movies. You can even do your own marathon from home, using the Big 3 streamers: Netflix, Amazon and Hulu. If you’re crazy enough to stream all of these horror films for a day, your 24 hours could look like this:
12
p.m.
‘Carrie’ (1976) NETFLIX INSTANT
Let’s start with some comfort food — not that comforting, of course. Brian De Palma’s shocker is still the Stephen King stab to beat — a mix of the sad and the pervy.

p.m.
‘Rosemary’s Baby’ (1968)
YOUTUBE
NETFLIX INSTANT
This very creepy short — from an Ambrose Bierce story — is so rare you’ll only find it on YouTube.
The longest film here is also one of cinema’s great slow burns. All that and Ruth Gordon too.
p.m.
Thanks to pesky rights issues, the number of old horror movies up for streaming on the big three (which it to say from the 1930s and ’40s) are virtually nonexistent. The closest you can get is this atmospheric Pre-Code num-
‘Nightmare on 7:15 p.m. Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge’ (1985) NETFLIX INSTANT
Chickamauga’ (1962)
It took a few movies for this series to realize its monster should be the kind that flings quips. The first two are straight-up creepers, this one focuses on a guy who might be possessed by Freddy Krueger.
‘Premonition 1:14 a.m. Following an Evil Deed’ (1995)

ber, with a sinister goateed Bela Lugosi lording over a Haitian plantation of zombified slaves. Though sometimes cited as the first full-length zombie movie, it’s the old kind, which is to say they don’t nibble on flesh (but do walk very, very slowly). That was a George A. Romero invention, still 36 years off.
NETFLIX INSTANT AND AMAZON PRIME

11:45
‘White Zombie’ (1932)
‘Pieces’ (1982) HULU
A sleazy Spanish slasher, this is, on top of being unbelievably, cartoonishly, peerlessly gory, also a laugh riot.
HULU
Bill Murray was a very vocal fan of this nutso horror-comedy, but do you really need motivation beyond the title “Frankenhooker”?

‘Bay of Blood’ 4:30 a.m. (1971)

NETFLIX INSTANT AND AMAZON PRIME
Now you’re 16 1/2 hours in; good luck trying to follow this hilariously Byzantine Italian “giallo” from extreme horror legend Mario Bava. Like “Slacker” but instead with grisly murders, it’s a hodgepodge of plots, all of it building to one hilarious, cynical punch line.
‘House’ (1977) HULU
This legitimately insane Japanese ghost romp will go down real well after you’ve watched movies all night.
‘The House by the Cemetery’ (1982)
‘V/H/S/2’ (2013): ‘Save Haven’ episode

Creepy, horrific and sad at once, this French chiller finds a disfigured, masked woman waiting for a new face.

‘House on Haunted Hill’ (1959)
David Cronenberg’s first full-on horror film is his most unhinged, set in a swanky yuppie apartment complex that gets infected with a virus that turns denizens into sex-crazed monsters. It’s a satire on the intersection of the ’60s sexual revolution and the coming ’80s megacapitalism — though also enjoyable as a straight-up gore fest.

HULU
This is one-minute long, and here’s why it’s here: It might be the creepiest thing David Lynch ever made. Shot with the world’s first film camera — and made for cinema’s centennial — it’s a dreamy litany of inscrutable images that will haunt your dreams.
‘Shivers’ (1975)
Inside this fake foundfootage frightfest lies a real doozy, with “The Raid” director Gareth Evans spending a half-hour piling one insanity atop another.
“Hellraiser” and “Hellbound: Hellraiser II” (Netflix Instant); “Kuroneko” (Hulu) “Kwaidan” (Hulu)

Italian shocker Lucio Fulci is known for his unbelievably nasty — and largely incomprehensible — shockers. This one opens with a stab to the head and gets more unpleasant from there.

‘Day of the Dead’ (1985)
Time to go back to a more innocent time, when people — though not unflappable hero Steve McQueen — were merely dissolved by goo.

Q&A DANIEL RADCLIFFE NEEDED TO DO ‘HORNS’ The former Harry Potter swears that his latest isn’t a horror, despite how it may look. Daniel Radcliffe says he got lucky the year after the final “Harry Potter” film was made, scoring meaty roles in three very different films: He played poet Allen Ginsberg in “Kill Your Darlings” and starred in the rom-com “What If.” Then there’s “Horns,” a horror-mystery-comedy-romance
in which he plays a young man who, wrongfully blamed for the murder of his girlfriend (Juno Temple), one day awakens with a pair of devil horns and the power to turn people brutally honest. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge matt.prigge@metro.us
His need to do ‘Horns’: “I responded to the script very viscerally. I always know it’s right to pursue something when I feel like if I was to ever see another actor playing this part, it would be like watching my girlfriend kissing someone else. If I watched someone else play it, I would be really unhappy.”
Why ‘Horns’ is not a horror: “There is a modern obsession — maybe it’s not modern, maybe I’m being too hard on modernity — but there is an obsession with categorizing things. I actually wonder if [Alexandre Aja, of ‘Piranha’] wasn’t the director if it would be called
horror with such frequency. It has elements of horror and slasher horror. But generally speaking it’s just a beautiful f—ing love story. It’s a classic battle of good and evil, except it’s all going on inside one person. The dilemma of the film isn’t who did it, but what is [his character] going to do when he finds out who did it?”

life. It also has maybe the nastiest, bleakest ending to a film I’ve ever seen. When I met James, I asked him, ‘How did you have the balls to end your f—ing movie like that?’”
Edward Snowden gets humanized in the doc “Citizenfour.” / RADIUS-TWC
Documentary. ‘Citizenfour’ is much more than just a look at the Snowden affair The week that whistleblower Edward Snowden spent in a Hong Kong hotel, from which he leaked damning intel about America’s spying program, makes up the bulk of this documentary, which shows the real and disarmingly selfeffacing man who’s still hated in most polls. The lowdown: More important than rigorous — though still rigorous indeed — Laura Poitras’ doc isn’t the cumulative assessment that will inevitably come. The entire middle is fly-on-the-wall documentary cinema. There’s a nervous buzz that comes from his middle hour; the anxiety is palpable when journo Glenn Greenwald hits “publish” on the piece that breaks the first

Male sports fanatics are outsourcing their masculinity The World Series is over, we’re mid-season for football and I’m listening, watching and observing — trying to make sense of how crazy some men get with sports. (And yes, some women, but let’s focus this on men for the time being, OK?) It’s a little, um, weird. For so many, it’s not one season, it’s ALL seasons — American football and hockey in September (through June), basketball in October (through June), golf in January (through October), baseball in March (through October). Then throw in soccer and NASCAR just for kicks, plus add fantasy sports during the offseason of all the above. Please understand: This isn’t

a bash on sports. Sports are great: They teach teamwork, fair play, dedication, honor and camaraderie; they exemplify that practice leads to growth and bettering one’s skills. However, I’m not talking about sports or sports athletes. I’m talking about some (perhaps many) male sports fans: men who spend hours and hours and hours in front of a TV watching other people do things all the while claiming, “WE” won or “WE” lost. Reality check: You didn’t do anything. You sat watching others accomplish tremendous feats, but you didn’t accomplish them. Those athletes didn’t know you were watching, and would have won or lost regard-

less if you missed the game. And not only does so much time go to watching others accomplishing their goals, but male fans of this sort hate others to the point of fighting/ killing fans of opposing teams! Manufactured rivalries have been created to benefit ticket sales and lend themselves to allowing these men to outsource their masculinity. “Outsourced masculinity?” You bet. The behavioral dynamics are undeniable: • He’ll spend endless time following/memorizing stats, players, scores and past games, but forgets his anniversary. • He takes his wedding ring off
For exclusive commentary, visit Metro.us/blogs. because it’s “uncomfortable when he’s working,” but has no problem wearing another man’s last name across his back. • He may take an anti-gay marriage stance and/or label non-aggressive activities as “gay,” yet fail to see the obvious homoerotic nature of watching men smack each other on the ass. Full disclosure: I played baseball all the way through school. I was (and still am) extremely competitive. But I don’t feel the need to validate myself through some other man’s activities. Masculinity comes from within. It can be influenced by activities, surroundings, etc., but ultimately it’s an inside job. Men — self-assured men — take care of theirs. They don’t only watch; they act. They learn. They grow. They work hard to capture the love and happiness they want out of life.

RE: ‘Un-PC’ (Metro, Oct. 30) I am appalled by letter writer George Christian’s extremely insensitive letter about “Indian Summer.” His disgusting rant suggests that “readers” might be insulted by the phrase. His use of the word “reader” completely ignores those who are unable to read as a result of being visually impaired or comprehension challenged, or those who have religious beliefs or literary identification issues that prevent them from reading. Absent “probable cause” our government cannot imprison anybody. Nurse Kaci Hickox was asymptomatic and the medical science clearly shows that (a) people exposed to Ebola are not contagious unless they have symptoms and (b) the degree of contagiousness is proportionate to the symptoms experienced. In other words, unless you show signs of illness (fever, cough, vomiting, etc.) you can’t make anybody else sick. Mr. Sieger, no amount of ignorance or general public stupidity allows us to violate the civil rights of an American citizen.

Storylines to watch as Patriots meet Broncos
NFL. The Broncos and Pats will again battle for AFC supremacy.
Heading into the 2014 season, the Patriots and Broncos seemed destined to again meet in the AFC title game. A month into the season, the Pats weren’t living up to their end of the bargain. They owned a 2-2 record and were coming off a blowout loss at the hands of the Chiefs. Tom Brady looked old, but Peyton Manning sure didn’t. Suddenly, the script is back to normal, and “Brady vs. Manning XVI on Sunday (4:25 p.m., CBS) is destined to be another classic. MATT BURKE @BurkeMetroBos

It’s goi going to be cold and windy in Foxboro on Sunday. Peyton Pe Manning must think t it’s always like that around here. In November 2013, the game in which the Pats came back from a 24-0 hole, Manning had to h deal with temps in the de low lo 20s and 22 mph wind. This Sunday won’t w be as cold, but there is b a 10 percent chance of rain and winds could ra rea reach 28 mph. Manning threw for just 150 yards in last ye year’s regular-season game and had a QB rating of 70.4. B Bill Belichick even gave Manni Manning the ball in OT to gain th the wind advantage.

Belichick is known for taking away team’s strengths. Obviously, Denver’s strength is the arm of Manning and the great receivers at his disposal. But the Broncos rushing attack isn’t exactly weak. Ronnie Hillman has two 100-yard games in the past three weeks. Last year, Knowshon Moreno ran for 224 yards in Foxboro.
Star power One of the more memorable games of the 2013 season for the Patriots was the home victory over the Saints. In that contest, then-Patriots cornerback Aqib Talib was matched up with tight end Jimmy Graham and his play

against the Pro Bowler was a huge reason why New England was victorious. Graham was targeted six times by Drew Brees, but did not catch a single ball. Rob Gronkowski has been on a tear of late and there’s reason to believe that Talib, now with the Broncos, could get Gronk duty.

So far, so good for Rondo and C’s NBA. Optimism for the Celtics is suddenly high thanks to a tremendous opener. If what we saw on Wednesday night against the Nets was Rajon Rondo at, say, 75 percent, it will be quite interesting to see what he can do when he’s back to full health. Rondo had his left hand heavily padded against Brooklyn, as he is still recovering from a fracture of his third metacarpal — which occurred late last month when he slipped and fell in the shower. But the C’s captain
ran the offense to perfection against the Nets as Boston scored 121 points. It was the Celtics’ highest point total since January 2011. “I thought he played great,” Celtics head coach Brad Stevens told NESN .com. “I don’t know what he ended up with — 13 and 12 in 29 minutes. I probably played him in the second half too long of stints for what I wanted to at one time, but I actually thought one of the best parts about the game for us was the fact that we went to the bench we just kept going. And the bench made such a great contribution, and Rondo just kind of fit in seamlessly.”
The C’s will get two thirds of the NBA’s Texas triangle out of the way early in the season as they will be at Houston (8 p.m., CSNNE) on Saturday and at Dallas (8:30 p.m., CSNNE) on Monday. The Rockets have been busy to start the season as they beat the Lakers in L.A., 108-90, on Tuesday night before dumping the Jazz in Utah, 104-93, Wednesday. Dwight Howard has been impressive through two games as the big man recorded a double-double in both Rockets victories. MATT BURKE @BurkeMetroBos

Revs open playoffs against Columbus MLS. The Revolution are legit title contenders as the MLS postseason begins. The 2014 MLS playoffs began on Wednesday, but when New England (17-13-4) meets Columbus (14-10-10) on Saturday (4 p.m., CSNNE) at Crew Stadium in the first of a two-game series, you won’t find two hotter clubs in the league. The Crew finished on a 6-1-1 clip while the Revolution closed 9-1-2 to grab the second seed in the Eastern Conference. Columbus is the third seed, so after the second match, a week from Sunday at Gillette Stadium, one of these genuine title contenders will be done for the season. During the regular season, Columbus went 2-1 against New England, although the Revolution won the last meet-
ing, 2-1, on Oct. 4 at home. For New England, its entire fate changed this summer when it acquired World Cup hero Jermaine Jones (two goals, four assists). The U.S. men’s national team midfielder debuted on Aug. 30 at Toronto (a 3-0 win) and since that point, his new club has gone 8-1-1 with him in the lineup. While Jones gets the headlines around the world, fellow midfielder Lee Nguyen is a legitimate MVP candidate this season. In his third season in Foxboro, Nguyen’s career has completely taken off with 18 goals (fourth most in the league, most for a midfielder),
five assists and an MLS-leading nine game-winning goals. Argentine forward Federico Higuain and midfielder Ethan Finlay led the Crew with 11 goals apiece. Homefield advantage could be a huge factor since Columbus has a goal-differential of plus-12 at Crew Stadium and minus-2 on the road. New England’s home/road splits are even more eye-popping as they are plus-14 at Gillette Stadium and minus-9 on the road. RICH SLATE @RichSlate

“I don’t know why people talk about Jermaine Jones like he’s the main guy. The main guy is Lee Nguyen. If you shut that guy down, I think we can win the game.” Columbus Crew midfielder Tony Tchani, to MLSSoccer.com
