While the gubernatorial election was still too close to call at midnight, Bostonians had no shortage of opinions regarding the race’s two main contenders: Republican Charlie Baker, who was ahead by just 6,500 votes with 90 percent of precincts reporting, and Democrat Martha Coakley. Randy Dinsmore, a 34-yearold mover from Boston, said he typically votes based on the candidate, not the party. “I feel politics is so beyond us regular people that I end up voting for the person that I don’t like the least,” he said. “I liked Baker better than Coakley. He seemed like he was more in touch, I guess. At least with me.” He added, “When it comes to politicians, it all seems so crooked. Our best guy just died [Mayor Tom Menino], you know what I mean?” Sasha Kaufmann, a 31-yearold social worker from Boston, meanwhile, voted for Coakley.
Voter turnout
Fewer Hub voters at the polls There are more than 380,000 registered voters in Boston, but by 6 p.m., 131,622 people, or 34 percent of the eligible voters in Boston, had made it to the polls. In comparison, during the 2010 gubernatorial race, 164,312 registered Boston voters cast their ballots. Boston has a total of 255 precincts at over 150 polling locations and of the more than 1,700 election officers working the polls, more than 400 are fluent in second languages.

“I identify as a gay person and she’s been very strong for the LGBT community as well as her work for equal pay. I also heard a lot about Charlie Baker was trying to restrict the welfare system and I didn’t like that, particularly considering how our economy is today.” Sophia Foutsitzis, a 19-yearold student at Boston University, said “the Democratic ticket resonates with me both as a woman and a young person.” “I feel like a lot of things went down these past two years with regards to birth control and women’s rights. That and environmental policies brought me out,” she said. Foutsitzis said she favored expanding the bottle deposit in the state and keeping the gas tax as it is, two issues that were featured as ballot questions. “I did get a little confused regarding the ballot questions, though,” she said. “I’m concerned I didn’t vote for the right thing.” Democrat Beverley Coniglio, a jeweler who lives near Fenway, said she hoped to keep Republicans out of state office. That, and instituting mandatory sick leave for the majority of businesses in the state drew her to the polls. “I voted ‘yes’ because I’ve been in that position where

Christine Yorty, a 53-yearold artist, said she didn’t like Coakley or Baker. “I don’t know if it’s true but that stuff about him outsourcing jobs? That makes me crazy,’ she said. “And she’s no Deval Patrick.” She said the state needs to maintain its current gas tax. “Our economy has never tanked as badly as other places in part because we’ve had public money. Southie. Tsarnaev sister admits lying to police
Sister of Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, Ailina Tsarnaeva, makes her way to South Boston Municipal Court Tuesday morning. / NICOLAUS CZARNECKI, METRO
The 24-year-old sister of accused Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev pleaded guilty in South Boston Municipal Court on Tuesday to misleading a Boston Police detective as he investigated the passing of a counterfeit bill at a local Applebee’s restaurant. Ailina Tsarnaeva will serve no jail time if she stays out of trouble in the next 30 days, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney office. However she faces up to two-and-a-half-years in prison if she reoffends before then.
Prosecutors say Tsarnaeva was uncooperative with the 2010 investigation after she picked up someone who passed a counterfeit bill at the restaurant and “lied about certain salient facts during the investigation. Tsarnaeva has also faced previous charges in New York for allegedly threatening a woman with a bomb. Her brother, 21, is awaiting trial on the April 2013 terror attack that killed three people and injured 264. MORGAN ROUSSEAU

City’s ‘Mo Bros’ take on Movember Activism in The Hub. The mustache growing season is in full, furry effect. Movember’s manly men and the women who love them are five days and a few prickly millimeters into the monthlong mustache-growing holiday that raises funds and awareness for prostate and testicular cancers, as well as men’s mental health issues. Two-time testicular cancer survivor Eric Stout, 33, is a member and organizer of the local “BellissiMo” team, which is comprised of 146 members from the Harvard Hospitals Network. Team BellissiMo is ranked as the seventh Movember team in the nation and has a fundraising goal of $150,000. The “mo bros,” as they’re called, have managed to rake in $25,000 in donations since Movember kicked off Saturday. Stout, an East Boston resident, was first diagnosed with testicular cancer in May 2010, at age 28, and suffered a recurrence in December 2010. Stout is thrilled to now be cancer-free, but says if he could turn back time, he would have gotten checked out sooner. “Men kind of ignore their

Republicans roll up early wins in elections
Painful Varicose Veins?
Obama. The White House played down the prospect of sharp changes in strategy after the election. Republicans struck powerful first blows in U.S. congressional elections on Tuesday in their drive to control the U.S. Senate and dramatically tip the balance of power away from President Barack Obama and his Democrats. Obama’s low job approval rating, partisan gridlock in Washington and a U.S. economy that is not growing broadly enough to help many in the middle class were major issues confronting voters in elections for 36 senators, 36 state governors and all 435 members of the House of Representatives. In the Senate races, Republican challenger Tom Cotton defeated Democratic incum-

bent Mark Pryor in Arkansas, television networks projected, despite frantic get-out-the-vote efforts by former President Bill Clinton, who hails from Arkansas. Cotton’s win, along with a victory by Republican Shelley Moore Capito in West Virginia, gave Republicans two of the six seats they need to gain control of the Senate. Capito easily de-
feated Natalie Tennant to win a seat left open by retiring Democratic Senator Jay Rockefeller. In another boost for Republicans, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky won his re-election battle, fending off Democrat Alison Lundergan Grimes in a race that had been close for months until McConnell pulled away in the polls in recent days. Rihanna goes for shock value with shockingly brief answers for Elle
CULTURE
Rihanna graces the cover of Elle magazine for the fourth time for its December issue. She sat down with the magazine for a Q-and-A session full of evidence that Rihanna truly is the Ernest Hemingway of pop stars, using two words where someone like Miley Cyrus would probably use 12. But even with such brevity, her answers are illuminating — terrified of childbirth, rth, loves Michael Bolton’s “Greatest Hits.” Here are some of her more memorable sound bites.
The answer we don’t really believe: Elle: What do people misunderTwitter feed Today, Roseanne Barr is considering a career as a whiskey spokeswoman, Ricky Martin is all about self-improvement, Kristin Chenoweth is feeling like a social media slacker and Jimmy Kimmel is feeling #blessed. @therealroseanne: thank Heavens for Makers Mark as it loosens up the more powerful joy centers which r th secret weapon against death by depressive banality.

There’s a new “Hot Mug Shot Guy” sweeping the Internet. Sean Kory was arrested at a Halloween parade in Santa Cruz, California, for assaulting a man dressed up as a Fox News reporter. Kory reportedly yelled, “I hate Fox News,” grabbed the man’s prop mic and rubbed it in his crotch then began pummelling the victim with a tennis racket, though police reports indicate the man was not injured. Even though we’re featuring this item in the paper, don’t confuse this as your calling to dethrone Kory.

Between the Beyonce album info leaks, Angelina Jolie considering political office and the Katy Perry-Taylor Swift feud, maybe we forgot to keep an eye on Miley Cyrus. Hey, it happens. So what’s she been doing while attentions have been elsewhere? Snagging herself a Schwarzenegger. Cyrus is reportedly dating Patrick Schwarzenegger, son of the Governator and Maria

Shriver, according to E! News. The new couple was seen together on a recent night out — as well as the next morning at Schwarzenegger’s apartment. Ooooh! Apparently Schwarzenegger likes to play the long game, though. In a 2011 Details magazine profile, he said of his dating life, “My eye, though, is on Miley.” This is either adorable or creepy. Or adorably creepy.
It’s the great pumpkin, Ariana Grande
Sometimes a fan loves Ariana Grande so much that she has to call the cops on him. At least that was what happened when Tim Normandin, a 29-year-old man from Lowell, didn’t heed her record company’s request that he stop sending Grande outlandish gifts, according to TMZ. Among the tokens of his affection? Eight Yankee Candle Company candles, calendars featuring puppies and kittens, a three-piece mirror set from Kmart, a $200 anklet from Kay Jewelers, a rock he picked up in New Hampshire’s White Mountains and, best of all, a

FILM & GOING OUT
‘Interstellar’ needs to be seen on film Out today. You really have to view this space-aged movie the old-fashioned way. Wednesday marks a milestone: A film is being released on actual film. “Interstellar hits theaters today — just not even close to all of them. That may seem odd, given that it’s one of the most highly anticipated movies of the year: the latest from brainy blockbuster-maker Christopher Nolan, with Oscar winners Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway in space. Yet the only theaters getting it are the ones that never threw out their film projectors, which are fewer than 300. This bold move is a strong push-back against the digital wave that has almost consumed modern cinema. In 2010, most theaters switched — at great cost — to DCP (Digital Cinema Package), a purely computerized system. Instead of bulky, expensive-to-ship film reels, movies were mere files with a password to unlock. Unlike film, they would never scratch, rot or burn up. All a projectionist had to do was hit a button. But the files are vulnerable to corruption and deletion. And while it’s nice to have sparkling-clean images, they can be too bright. As Quentin Tarantino — like Nolan, another celluloid zealot — once put it, digital projection is like “watching television in public. “Interstellar looks great on

70mm. The film is about McConaughey and Hathaway searching through the cosmos for a planet to replace dying Earth, and its early scenes on Earth are sometimes impossibly dark. But once it gets to space, you can not only see the majesty, but feel it. None of it looks digital, not even the planets our heroes visit. Fall trends. Low prices, but also low inventory for fall home buyers Cooler weather in September not only brought a swift end to summer, but according to some reports, the unseasonal cold snap cooled the home sales market, too. Did the chilly air kill the Greater Boston market? “Well, yes and no,” says realtor Susan Piracini of RE/ MAX Leading Edge of Back Bay. “There was a cooling in the market and we did have a slow September, and some of that was weather related. But, overall, it was more a reaction to the red-hot crazy spring and summer market.” Piracini says this year’s frenzied bidding wars, which pushed home sales over asking price, scared a lot of buyers off. “It got to the point where there was buyer resistance to the higher prices. Sellers got cocky and pushed prices up and up. After seeing ten homes and getting outbid on each, buyers give up and go and rent.” Fall is a good time for buying. Many home owners whose

“This is usually a great time of year for buyers. But much of the inventory did get snapped up, so they might have to settle for something that isn’t their ideal home. But they can get a good deal,” Piracini says. While it might not be as hot as 2014, the next year is still likely to be a hot one. “There’s a natural leveling off. From our all-laser, bladeless LASIK procedure – to exciting developments like our Visian Implantable lens - our commitment to leading edge technology is surpassed only by our dedication to personalized patient care. Patients of New England Eye Center find confidence in knowing we offer experience you can trust and technology you can rely on. NASA-Approved LASIK - Our all-laser, bladeless LASIK at New England Eye Center has greatly improved results and helped take the fear out of having LASIK. The vast majority of our LASIK and PRK patients now achieve 20/20 vision at distance without glasses or contact lenses. Our method of LASIK is the same type approved for NASA astronauts and military pilots. Implantable Contact Lens - New England Eye Center is among a select group of practices in the country offering patients the benefits of the Visian Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL). Unlike LASIK, the Visian corrects vision by inserting a delicate intraocular lens-like device atop the eye’s natural lens, which is why the Visian is also referred to as the ‘Implantable Contact Lens.’ All of the refractive surgeons at New England Eye Center are qualified and experienced in performing this brief outpatient procedure to insert the Visian ICL. Because no corneal or other tissue is removed in the Visian ICL procedure, visual recovery is extremely rapid and the ICL can potentially be replaced if the eye’s focus changes over time. Refractive Lens Exchange - If you’re frustrated with reading glasses and bifocals, our refractive specialists perform a procedure known as Refractive Lens Exchange. By replacing your eye’s aging natural lens with a Intraocular Lens Implant customized specifically for your visual needs - and your lifestyle - allowing you to see better, look younger and never have to worry about developing cataracts! Laser Cataract Surgery - For seniors experiencing changes in their vision – or who have been diagnosed with a cataract – New England Eye Center is turning the dream of Laser Cataract Surgery into reality. We are currently among only the top 3% of practices in the country to offer patients the added precision and accuracy of Laser Cataract Surgery using OptiMedica® Catalys™ Precision Laser System. This year, take your vision to the NEXT LEVEL by giving yourself or a loved one the Gift of Sight. Now that’s a Gift that keeps on Giving. A blessed New Year from the surgeons and staff of New England Eye Center.

Pedestrians aggravated by cyclists
crush another human being the way lawless cyclists so often do.
Re: ‘Oppression against cyclists is great travesty of our age’ (Metro, Nov. 4) In response to letter writer Jack Dickenson, the WHY is this: Lawless cyclists should be targeted by police over pedestrians because bicycles are vehicles that regularly travel over the speed limit set by the city. “Lawless” pedestrians don’t do the same. It’s bad enough that I have to get cut off almost daily by cyclists (while in a crosswalk no less), but now I have to read about their “oppression” in Metro. Get a grip, Jack — cyclists are going 10 to 15 miles an hour, while pedestrians are going about 2 to 3 mph. We’re just trying to get to work without getting hit by a car or bike — pedestrians and vehicles stop at lights and follow the rules of

The best part of every regular season for Peyton Manning is always the game after he had to deal with a Bill Belichick defense.
We now know that the Steelers are at least a solid football team, so the Colts’ blowout loss to them in Week 8 wasn’t as bad as it seemed.
Alex Smith’s line in the Chiefs’ 24-10 win over the Jets was perfectly Alex Smith. He connected on 21-of-31 passes for 199 yards.

Bills (5-3)
Ravens (5-4)
In no way does this feel like the ďŹ fth-best team in football, but the fact is they’ve played just one absolute stinker this season (a 27-7 loss in Carolina).
So far in 2014, Packers running back Eddie Lacy has just one 100-plus yard rushing day — or seven fewer than DeMarco Murray.
Only the Patriots have scored over 23 points against the Bills. Bualo can get an early lead in the wild card race as it has the Chiefs and Miami coming up.
Seriously, is there any dierence between the Ravens, Bengals, Steelers, Chiefs, Browns, Bills, Dolphins, Chargers and Texans?

Cardinals (7-1)
Seahawks (5-3)
Cowboys (6-3)
Chargers (5-4)
Saints (4-4)
Reason No. 1 why the Cards are No. 2: Their lone loss this season came to the Broncos, the team the Pats blew out on Sunday.
The Seahawks were on the verge of blowing out the winless Raiders, leading 24-3 at the half. They wound up winning by just six points.
Jerry Jones wants Tony Romo to play in London so badly that he “jokinglyâ€? oered up his wife’s ďŹ rst-class seat on the team plane to the quarterback.
Wow, was that Miami game alarming. San Diego is doing the opposite of what was once its hallmark. This year, the Chargers may have peaked early.
The Saints have three straight games in the, as Hulk Hogan would say, the “New Orleans SilverDome. They could be 7-4 by Thanksgiving.

Celtics aren’t shy about shooting 3’s despite struggles A main beef with the Celtics (1-2) heading into the 2014-15 season was that they didn’t have enough players who could shoot the ball well from the outside. Through three games, that prediction seems to have been spot on. While the C’s love to shoot 3’s — they’ve shot 26 per game so far, tied for seventh in the league — they’re not exactly good at it. Their percentage from beyond the deep stripe is a paltry .256, the 25th worst mark in the NBA. That is mostly due to the C’s horriďŹ c shooting night in Houston last Saturday night, when they

went 1-for-25 from 3-point range. Things went a bit better two nights later against the Mavs as the green hit 11-of-31 from deep. This is not to say that Boston can’t score. The C’s are averaging 108 points per game so far this season, the third-best mark in the league. Je Green is leading the way, scoring-wise, pumping in 23 points per game with Avery Bradley (17.7 ppg) and Jared Sullinger (13.7 ppg) also getting the job done oensively. The Celtics get back to work Wednesday at TD Garden when they’ll host the Raptors (7:30 p.m., CSNNE). Toronto won its ďŹ rst two games of the season, beating Atlanta and Orlando, before falling to Miami on Sunday. MATT BURKE
