Photo shows MBTA worker allegedly asleep on the job Quincy. A longtime T employee will be punished, officials said. An MBTA worker who has been with the transit agency for 25 years is facing severe disciplinary action after a photograph surfaced of him allegedly sleeping on the job at the Quincy bus garage. A concerned T employee, who asked to remain anonymous, said he snapped the photograph within the last two weeks. He sent the photograph to Metro on Thursday afternoon, and said sleeping while on the job has been a “constant occurrence” at the Prison
Former probation commissioner, deputies sentenced Former Probation Commissioner John O’Brien was sentenced on Thursday to 18 months in prison, plus one year of supervised release, on top of a $25,000 fine and a $600 assessment. Two of O’Brien’s former deputies were also sentenced. Elizabeth Tavares was sentenced to three months in prison and one year of supervised release, and was hit with a $10,000 fine, while William Burke was sentenced to one year of probation, with a $10,000 fine. The three former Probation Department officials were convicted in July on charges that they rigged hiring in the department to help the politically connected. O’Brien and Tavares were found guilty of mail fraud and racketeering; Burke was convicted of conspiracy. Judge William Young said harsh sentences would imply the three were “rogue” actors. O’Brien could have received a maximum sentence of up to 71 months imprisonment. SHNS

Any employee caught sleeping is an automatic 10-day suspension.” MBTA Spokesman Joe Pesaturo said the incident was reported to authorities on Thursday morning by means of the agency’s See/Say mobile app. The Director of Bus Operations launched an investigation, said Pesaturo, later adding that the worker would face severe disciplinary action.

Earlier this year, after a series of similar sleeping photos were released to the media, the MBTA warned it would fire employees caught sleeping on the job. Don’t be a chicken, pass that turkey Volunteers formed two “human chains” Thursday at The Greater Boston Food Bank’s loading dock to unpack a shipment of several hundred frozen turkeys from one of the organization’s refrigerated trucks. The birds were passed “bucket brigade” style across 150 feet to the bank’s 6,000 square foot walk-in freezer, where they will be readied for distribution. The food bank says it hopes to distribute 45,000 holiday meals to those in need via their online Holiday Meal Drive. NICOLAUS CZARNECKI, METRO
Search on for man who threatened bus driver
Police released this image of the suspect who is wanted for threatening a bus driver. TRANSIT POLICE
MBTA Transit Police are seeking the identity of a man who allegedly threatened a bus driver with a weapon from his moped. The incident occurred on Thursday, Oct. 30, around 2:30 p.m. near Dudley Street and Blue Hill Avenue in Roxbury. The bus driver was operating on Route 41, which runs from JFK/UMass through Dudley Station to the inter-
section of Centre and Eliot streets. The MBTA released what appeared to be a trio of surveillance stills on Thursday morning in an attempt to catch the suspect. As of Thursday evening, no arrest had been made and the investigation was ongoing. The individual was described as a black male with a medium build and short hair. He was wearing a dark
North Face brand vest over a black t-shirt, blue jeans and black sneakers and was driving a white moped at the time of the incident. Anyone with any information is encouraged to contact the Transit Police’s Criminal Investigations Unit at 617222-1050 or text an anonymous tip to 873873 or use the anonymous feature on the MBTA’s See/Say app. DANNY MCDONALD

Boston. Curt Schilling sparks evolution debate Ex-Red Sox great Curt Schilling sparked a Twitter debate late Wednesday over the premise of evolution and the science behind it. His main gripe? How can one species evolve into another? Posed with that question, many called out the three-time World Series champ for having outdated views on evolution. President Barack Obama plans to announce an overhaul of U.S. immigration policy through executive action that would shield up to 5 million undocumented immigrants from deportation, The New York Times reported. The Times, citing unidentified administration officials with direct knowledge of the plan, said Obama’s proposed overhaul may be announced as soon as next week. Officials said it would allow many parents of children who are U.S. citizens or legal residents to obtain work documents and

The Irish rock star was never in danger, airport authorities said on Thursday. PROGRAMS HAVE SPACE TO GROW I’m a bit of a space geek. I remember as child walking on a freezing winter night into an Illinois farm field and watching a lunar eclipse. And I sat transfixed by the grainy black and white TV images of Neil Armstrong hopping onto the moon. And even now, I love staring into the infinite blackness, watching satellites glide silently overhead. My older daughter will soon graduate from the great Georgia Institute of Technology as an honest to goodness rocket scientist. I like to think she got just a little of that from me. “What is that constellation, Dad?” “Well, dear, I think that’s Meyer the Hat Maker.” So you can imagine my excitement over the high-tech speed date underway right now between a space probe and a comet more than 100-million miles away. This rendezvous took place with all involved traveling roughly 41,000 miles an hour, or in layman’s terms “pretty damn fast.” If you could drive that speed, you could travel from New York to Los Angeles in four minutes, and honestly, the first hour and a half would be spent just getting out of Jersey, right? Anyway, the hope is that this probe is now going to ride

Many folks feel their tax dollars are stretched thinly enough already. But the technological advances enjoyed by societies who attempt such amazing feats as landing on a comet are undeniable and profound. Think about it: The rocket carrying this probe launched in 2004 when Facebook was a brand-new idea. If nothing else, that is pretty darn inspiring.

Don’t just watch your back, cover it Obamacare. Open enrollment begins again Saturday on federal and state health insurance marketplaces. Last year’s rollout of the Affordable Care Act’s health insurance mandate was, generously put, not without its flaws. But as open enrollment through the insurance exchanges resumes Saturday through Feb. 15, the process of finding affordable coverage likely won’t be as glitch-prone, given that there won’t be a similarly massive influx of sign-ups. Still, experts aren’t sure what to expect from the next round of applications. “We can’t predict what will happen this year, or whether open enrollment will be an
annual occurrence, but 3.7 million Americans enrolled for insurance through the ACA marketplace over the past year,” says Shane Power, president of Watertree Health, which works to improve access to health care. Power sees good health care as a system, with insurance companies, doctors, pharmacists and the insured person all having a role. “The cycle of health care starts with the provider and going to see a doctor, then there’s prescription medication access and then there’s personal upgrades an individual can make to their lifestyle,” Power says. “The good news is that better education and health care awareness by many organizations is leading to people being healthier.” Need help? Seeing a doctor isn’t enough The millions of newly insured Americans have already affected the health care system, Power says: “We do know that sign-up resulted in an increase in the amount of people who went to see a doctor. That’s good news. But what’s interesting is that many of those
people are not necessarily filling their prescriptions. One in four prescriptions written are not being filled.” Power can’t speculate about the reasons why, but notes that the cost of medications remains a serious hurdle: “One week, a medication might be federally subsidized and the next it won’t, and the cost goes up exponentially.”

Nearly seven in 10 consumers who selected plans with tax credits through the federal marketplace during open enrollment pay $100 a month or less for coverage. Nearly half (46 percent) were covered for $50 or less.

Interview. The actress comes to Boston with a widely traveled Tonywinning production. Keeping a character sympathetic while she battles with her elderly mother-in-law might seem like a bit of a challenge, but Vanessa Williams, who portrays a woman doing just that in “The Trip to Bountiful” (opening Nov. 20 at the Cutler Majestic Theatre), says it’s all part of the job. “The work is to make the character a whole person, and to demonstrate their strengths and their weaknesses. Once people see the show and see Jessie Mae, they realize what the real issue is of her frustration,” Williams says, pointing to the challenges of sharing a tiny apartment with a husband recovering from depression and his mother. “It’s a classic love triangle that plays out.” Williams has played the role of Jessie Mae a few times. The show has been on Broadway (her co-star, Cicely Tyson, won a Tony for her work), adapted into a TV movie and performed
in LA. It tells the story of the Watts family, with matriarch Carrie Watts longing for a simpler time back home in Bountiful, while her son Ludie and his wife, Jessie Mae, remain committed to their lives in modern, cosmopolitan Houston. Williams calls Tyson “a force to be reckoned with.” “To watch her work ethic and her passion at her mature age that she is, which is still a mystery,” says Williams with a laugh, “I think that it’s what makes you feel hopeful, rejuvenated and never have any excuse to feel tired or weary if someone that accomplished and that mature can do it and never miss a show.” Though Cuba Gooding Jr. played Ludie on Broadway, this incarnation stars Blair Underwood in the role. As Williams points out, “I’ve had four different husbands between Broadway and TV and the LA run. Each person brings a different energy. That’s why live theater is so great. Depending on the night and the actors and the mood and the audience, it’s always different.” She praises Underwood for getting into the swing of

“ PLENTY OF RAZZMATAZZ, INCLUDING SNOW! YOU’LL LEAVE THE THEATRE HUMMING IRVING BERLIN’S IRRESISTIBLY HUMMABLE TUNES!” –THE BOSTON GLOBE
A live stage version of “Green Porno” comes to the Cutler Majestic Theatre Feb. 13 (through Feb. 15). Tickets ($25-$89) are available at www.artsemerson.org. / SUNDANCETV
Isabella Rossellini performs a porno Web series. The actress will teach you how lobsters have sex. She’s been directed by David Lynch. She’s been the face of Lancome. And she’s explained animal mating rituals in her online series “Green Porno.” Now Isabella Rossellini takes a live version of the very stylized, tongue-in-cheek reenactments of animal copulation to Boston. Part education, part performance art, “Green Porno” — which is not nearly as vulgar as the name implies — is a wonderfully smart and quirky window into the animal kingdom.

How did you come up with the idea for “Green Porno”? I always liked animals, ever since I was a little girl. I always wanted to study animal behavior, but it wasn’t really available when I was little. I ended up in modeling and acting instead of studying, but I remained interested. Six or seven years ago, Sundance offered me — and others — a chance to do short films. I came up with the idea because it’s funny and everyone is interested in sex. You’ve taken “Green Porno” on the road before. What is it like performing it live rather
Bonus question
While “Green Porno” is very successful, it’s not your typical series. Were you surprised at people’s reactions? They reacted better than I expected. It was an experiment on a new canvas — the Internet and mobile devices — and I didn’t expect to get millions of hits. I didn’t expect it to become my principal activity. than filming in a studio? It was difficult in the beginning to remember 60 pages by heart, but now I know them and I’m very secure. It’s wonderful to perform in front of an audience. I’ve done the show in French and in Italian, but I’ve done it the most in English, so it’s really in my head that way. The costumes and props are stylized and very distinct. Who makes them, and what is that process like? When I write the script, I illustrate it. I get the basics down. Then I work with Rick Gilbert and Andy Byers. They bring a lot of detail and wonderful ideas. I don’t write the script and say, “It’s up to you to make me a fly.” I think of the basic solution and they give it this genius homemade effect. Handel Messiah Nov. 28 to Nov. 30 Symphony Hall 301 Mass. Ave. $25-$94, 617-266-3605 www.handelandhaydn.org Harry Christophers and the Handel and Haydn Society inaugurate the holiday season with this immortal work. The “Hallelujah” chorus that concludes Handel’s “Messiah” is doubtless one of the most wellknown bits of classical music, up there with Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy,” and no less communicative of luminescent glory. As always, the period instrument orchestra provides a particularly authentic rendition.

The movie’s
notorious slapstick antics tend to overshadow everything else, but the music, often surprisingly intense, is crucial in anchoring its deeper, more serious themes.

They’ll also debut a brand-new commission from Russian composer Ljova.

FILM The Middle East
Q&A JON STEWART GOES TO THE MOVIES
On Iran
The comic says “The Daily Show” is as serious to him as his new political drama, “Rosewater.” Last summer Jon Stewart disappeared for three months so he could head to Jordan and direct a movie. The result, “Rosewater,” is not a comedy, although there are some jokes. It’s about what happened to Maziar Bahari (played by Gael Garcia Bernal), an Iranian journalist detained and tortured by Tehran officials for 118 days — in part because of his appearance in a bit on “The Daily Show.” But Stewart insists the jobs of making TV and making movies aren’t that different. How did you prepare to direct a film? Did you bug filmmakers? There were a couple people I went to, just to ask, “Is this viable? I’ve written a script. Is it a script? Do you look at it and say, ‘You know what, it turns out it’s a recipe. This is actually mock-apple pie, it’s not a movie.’” You’ve said you don’t think “The Daily Show” has changed the world in a way
you may like. Well, it’s not intended to. I don’t see evidence of it. And that’s not its purpose. Do you feel a politically charged movie has a better chance of effecting change? I view it very similarly to the show, which is that its purpose is to draw attention to something so that a conversation can occur. You always have that feeling that you’re pointing at things, going, “Why don’t you guys look at that! There’s something over there!” I never viewed this as a separate entity from what I normally do at the show. Obviously, it’s a different format and more long-form. But it still struck me as being of the same language, in some respects. It wasn’t like going out and doing a Laurie Anderson
20
Jon Stewart took a hiatus from “The Daily Show” to direct “Rosewater,” about the lengthy detainment in Tehran of Iranian journalist Maziar Bahari. / LAITH AL-MAJALI, OPEN ROAD FILMS
production of music and light that expressed my feelings about Iran. This is a more serious production than “The Daily Show.” I don’t believe so. On “The Daily Show,” we use the tools of satire to address war, death, famine, all kinds of things. With this we’re using the tools of cinema to address very similar themes and subtexts. JON STEWART GETTY IMAGES
Can you talk about the humor in this film? It’s far from a comedy, but there are jokes. I think humor was so central to Maziar’s survival and central to his memoir.
I wanted to make sure we got humor in there, but in a way that we didn’t impose it on it — not in any kind of contrivance but in a way that allowed it to grow organically from those situations. If we had heightened it and created farcical elements around it, it would have diminished just how the reality of the absurdity was so stark. There’s that scene where Maziar is allowed to call his wife for the first time, and in the middle of being berated (by his interrogator, played by Kim Bodnia) he has to dial “9” to get out. It’s an in-yourface reminder that this is an office — this guy works in an office.
This film takes time to show everyday life in Iran. So many Western portrayals of it tend to dwell only on its bad parts. The film “Not Without My Daughter,” for example, seems to exist primarily to tell people Iran is evil. And it’s somewhat more complex than that! The dialogue between our two countries is this: We refer to them as part of the Axis of Evil, and they refer to us as the Great Satan. I think the bar was set relatively low for this film’s ability to present a slightly more nuanced version than that. But that’s what we were trying to do with the pieces on Iran on “The Daily Show.” We were trying to establish that it’s not a monolith, and it’s certainly not evil. And their ignorance of our culture is only matched by our ignorance of theirs. There is a good portion of individuals there and a good portion of individuals here that would have no problems with each other. You do slip in references to America’s long, checkered history with Iran. It was important to get the scene in about the coup in 1953 that was led by the CIA. We may view Iran as paranoid and slightly delusional, and there are elements of that within the regime, but it is not without precedent. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

Review
‘Dumb and Dumber To’ ••••• Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels are back as doofus manchildren Lloyd and Harry, who take to the road to find the latter’s grown daughter when it turns out he needs a kidney or will die. Fun! The lowdown: There are a ton of jokes in “Dumb and Dumber To.” A lot of them fall flat — but look at how many there are! Often it’s just everyone whipping out everything they’ve got, not really caring what sticks.
The gag’s the thing; when our stars aren’t holding forth on dumb juvenile sex jokes, they’re usually debating the finer points of joke-making — how drawing out gags makes them funnier. Carrey has the same hyperprecision, plus one sudden emotional outburst, delivered with far higher volume and pitch than ever required, that’s worth approximately 10,000 of “Somebody stop me!” This is a mishmash of the good, the bad and the in-between that subtly lowers expectations deep enough so that they can be repeatedly exceeded. See y’all in 2034. MATT PRIGGE
‘Beyond the Lights’ ••••• “Belle” star Gugu MbathaRaw plays Noni, a honeyvoiced, purple-haired, budding pop star poised by her monstrous stage mom (Minnie Driver) to be the next Rihanna/Beyonce. Then she meets and falls for an almost cartoonishly gentlemanly dogooder (Nate Parker).
“Dumb and Dumber To” stars Jeff Daniels and Jim Carrey are now both old enough for AARP. / UNIVERSAL PICTURES
The lowdown: “Melodrama” often gets a bad rap, but there’s nothing wrong with one done well. And “Beyond
the Lights” — done in the “Mahogany”/”Lady Sings the Blues” mold — does it really well, starting with giving lead spot to the excellent Mbatha-Raw. Hers is a serious performance in a film that treats itself seriously, yet never opens itself up ridicule. It avoids the over-the-top insanity of a Nicholas Sparks joint, demanding you go along with it, no matter how predictable things get. Plus it’s genuinely sexy, with one legitimately hot romp — plus one typical soft-focus-plustasteful music PG-13 “love scene.” MATT PRIGGE

Oh, Diplo. You should have known not to go after Taylor Swift. The DJ/producer tweeted that “Someone should make a Kickstarter to get Taylor Swift a booty,” so that’s kind of what one of his fans did. Perhaps Kickstarter was noble enough to refuse to green-light the project, so a Diplo fan set up a Fundly campaign to raise money under the title of “Get Taylor Swift a Booty.” “Taylor Swift Still Needs Your Help,” the campaign page reads. “Any true supporter of TSWIFT would definitely not pass up this opportunity
to improve her posterior! THIS is not a joke!” (Obviously, it’s a joke.) The fact that Diplo happens to be dating Swift enemy Katy Perry takes this from a prank to some songwritingworthy drama. While Swift may not have fired back, that didn’t stop Lorde, who tweeted at Diplo, “Should we do something about your tiny penis while we’re at it?” BURRRN! EMILY LAWRENCE

Despite being a professed fan of the first film, Jennifer Lawrence reportedly had second thoughts about her planned cameo appearance in “Dumb and Dumber To” — playing a younger version of Kathleen Turner’s character, Fraida Felcher, in a flashback. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lawrence happily filmed the cameo in Georgia last fall but retained the right to nix it from the film’s final cut if she didn’t like it, and she apparently exercised that right. Sound judgment, I think.
Bono drops more unwanted releases
Bono and four friends were flying U2’s Learjet 60 from Dublin to Berlin earlier this week when the rear door of the luggage compartment fell 15,000 feet to the ground, along with two pieces of luggage. Somewhere in Germany there’s a hiker suddenly looking to shift 150 pairs of sunglasses on eBay.

For the Net to be fair, it must be neutral
means that you get the same access as anyone else with your speed package. And those with slower speeds have slower access and higher speeds have faster access, which is known as capitalism to those who are not trying to defraud all of Earth. If Net neutrality is abolished, Amazon or any small mom and pop Internet startup will pay for the same circuit they had before but then they will also need to pay a Mafia-thug style “protection” fee to keep the telco provider from all but blocking their Website, just as the
Re: ‘Net neutrality a bad idea’ (Metro, Nov. 13) Net neutrality is a commie scam? No. Right now, with Net neutrality, you pay a telecommunications service for an X speed/ second circuit to the Internet and the telcos all but refuse to tell you that you do not get the speed you pay for in actuality. However, you do get to go online if you have such a circuit, and Net neutrality
Mafia forced stores to pay to keep its thugs from burning the building down. So the anti-neutrality crowd is not trying to promote capitalism or America, but criminal activity and corruption. Keep in mind the telcos already have networks in place and refuse to upgrade them because you have no choices. So they will not use this extra profit to upgrade, as the telcos say they will. The telco providers, who are an oligarchy, not a free market, will throttle everyone who refuses to pay the bribe in order to provide more
bandwidth to those who pay the “protection” with no alternative. This will destroy the free market of the Internet, which is not only anticapitalism and anti-American, but the same corruption that brought us such amazing business plans as those of Enron, MCI, AIG and all the other massive frauds that keep crashing our economy. Pats’ secondary second to none
Older, wiser Luck
The Colts really couldn’t have e planned a better tank job than the one that landed them Luck a few years back. Luck has almost instantly taken the Colts back to contention in a league where teams swing and miss on QBs yearafter-year. Luck goes into this weekend leading the NFL in passing ng yards (3,085), but he’s also lso extremely dangerous on n the ground, using his athleticism ticism to make something out of nothing. “He does a lot of things ngs I wish I could do,” Tom Brady rady said. “He’s big, fast, shrugs ugs off blockers. He makes a lot of extended plays. He’s a great passer.”
Fresh off a bye, the Patriots (7-2) ride a five-game winning streak into Indianapolis on Sunday (8:30 p.m., NBC). But the Colts, 6-3 and off a bye week themselves, are up for the challenge and are looking to make a statement that they too should be considered a top-tier AFC team along with the Pats and Broncos. In fact, the Colts are currently favored to beat the Patriots by three points on Sunday. Here are a few things to look for as the Pats enter the final stretch of their 2014 season.

Patriots fans still have to pinch themselves when they see cornerbacks Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner take the field — and then proceed to impact the game in ways we haven’t seen around here in years. Expect the same Sunday night. Luck’s favorite weapon, T.Y. Hilton, has 937 receiving yards this season — third in the NFL — but the Pats’ secondary will no doubt look to take him out of the picture. With an average running game, Luck and the Colts will be looking elsewhere on the field. Tight end Coby Fleener could see a lot of targets.

Speaking of tight ends, the Patriots will win that headto-head matchup just about every time thanks to the reemergence of Rob Gronkowski. The Colts defense has given up 45 catches for 552 yards and six touchdowns to opposing tight ends this season, according to Scout’s fftoolbox.com. Indy also ranks 27th in passing yards allowed per game (263.6). “Whether [Gronkowski] catches the ball or not, he’s a big factor, and I think that speaks to his value to our team,” Brady said.

NBA. LeBron’s Cavaliers back in town to face C’s LeBron James’ first tenure with the Cleveland Cavaliers ended at 10:53 p.m. on May 13, 2010, at TD Garden. Act II in James’ Cavs career is just getting underway, but the circus will be back in Boston on Friday (7:30 p.m., CSNNE). The Celtics no longer stand in Cleveland’s way in terms of Eastern Conference dominance as the C’s are currently in rebuild mode, but given the way Boston has
played to start the season, there is the chance this could be a first-round preview. The C’s have surprised some with a 3-4 record to start the year while James’ Cavs have underwhelmed most with a 3-3 record. The C’s big guns may be a tad fatigued Friday considering all five starters in their 109-94 loss to the Thunder Wednesday night played over 32 minutes. MATT BURKE
