Allston weed king wages dope battle Marijuana. Blocked from selling marijuana, Bill Downey says the state shouldn’t block him from selling pot derivative CBD. For a guy who loves marijuana, Bill Downey is pretty pissed off. Downey says the state is illegally blocking him from selling marijuana derivative CBD, which he says has none of the psychotropic effects of THC, the compound that gives marijuana users their high. His small office in lower Allston is decorated with ground-up marijuana shake on the coffee table and a bud behind the counter. The walls are covered with charts and graphs touting the health effects of different components of cannabis. Vials and bottles of cannabis-derived salve, balm, shampoo and body wash are on display. Downey is talking weed. Or, more specifically, what he views as the state’s ineptitude when it comes to regulating medical marijuana. “They [expletive] this up and they continue to [expletive] this up,” he said. His troubles began when state officials cracked down on Massachusetts’ growing marijuana industry, sending ceaseand-desist letters to many private marijuana dispensaries, including Downey’s. The 56-year-old father of two says his firm, then known as Yankee Care Givers, had

BU warns of phone scam As though being a student weren’t expensive enough — Boston University Police are warning of a phone scam that recently netted $2,000 from an international student. In two separate phone calls Thursday, people claiming to be from the IRS threatened to arrest and deport the student if she didn’t put the money on a Green Dot MoneyPak debit card and give them the number. “Any unsolicited telephone calls you receive where payment is demanded using Green Dot cards or by wire transfer are highly suspect and you should contact the police for advice.” police warned in a Facebook post. Downey’s since filed suit against the state’s Department of Health, arguing the state had no right to end his business. Meanwhile, Downey, an entrepreneur with a business degree from Babson College,

decided to rebrand. He got rid of the weed and hash oil and began selling marijuana derivative cannabidiol, known as CBD. He renamed his firm CBD Please. Downey, who says he’s a medical marijuana patient himself, and smokes the drug to relieve his gout, says state law says nothing about CBD,

which he says can help people reducing anxiety, prevent seizures even aid with digestion. That, he says means he should be allowed back in business. The state agency overseen the medical marijuana law, Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH), meanwhile, declined to speak specifically to the legality of Downey’s operation.

Police on Cape Cod said Tuesday a jogger was shot and wounded by a hunter who apparently mistook him for a deer. Sean C. Houle, 47, of Marston’s Mills is alleged to have shot a 39-year-old man jogging with his dog in Barnstable on Monday. The jogger was shot twice with shotgun pellets. Police described his injuries as non-lifethreatening. The dog was uninjured. Houle faces charges in the shooting. The Massachusetts shotgun season for deer hunters runs from Dec. 1 to Dec. 13. METRO

Waltham. One killed in house fire Tuesday

Fire crews searched for the cause of the three-alarm fire on Albemarle Road in Waltham on Tuesday that claimed the life of one individual. / NICOLAUS CZARNECKI, METRO

A three-alarm house fire on Albemarle Road on Tuesday morning left one person dead. Lieutenant Scott Perry of the Waltham Fire Department said he couldn’t say whether the victim was a resident of the house. He said the victim was not a firefighter. “The fire was extreme.

There was a lot of heat and flames,” said Perry. Firefighters on the scene brought the blaze under control by about 10:35 a.m., a little over an hour after it began, Perry said. Investigators were still at the scene late Tuesday, and no cause for the fire was given. MORGAN ROUSSEAU

Trolley door partially falls off at Park Street A quarter of a four-panel Green Line trolley door came loose as it traveled near Park Street Station during Tuesday’s already messy morning commute. Transit officials said the E-line trolley was approaching the eastbound Green Line platform at the station at 8:35 a.m. when the panel separated from the train. No injuries were reported. A Green Line inspector is facing disciplinary action for failing to ensure that the trolley door was secured in the closed position before the train proceeded to Park Street, said MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo. The 27-year-old trolley is among the 86 Green Line trolleys that will be rebuilt over the next two years, Pesaturo said. METRO

MIT yanks prof’s online lectures after sexual harassment claim Cambridge. MIT professor Walter Lewin’s online classes were hugely popular. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology has indefinitely removed online lectures by retired physics professor Walter Lewin, after a student accused him of sexual harassment. The institute removed lectures from MIT OpenCourseWare and online MITx courses from edX, the online learning platform co-founded by MIT, following a determination that Lewin sexually harassed a female student of one of his online classes. The student was not identified. According to a report by The Boston Globe, as many as 10,000 people a day watched

At the time MIT received the complaint, Lewin was not teaching any courses, either on campus or interactively online. He retired from MIT in July 2009. “MIT has established policies and procedures for responding to complaints of sexual misconduct, which were followed in this case,” said MIT spokeswoman Kimberly Allen. Had the misconduct been alleged to have happened in a physical classroom, MIT would have followed the same policies and procedures to investigate that claim, Allen said. As of deadline, Lewin had not responded to a request for an interview.

Mass Art alumna weaves sexy selfies into somber tapestries Mass Art. A Bostontrained weaver is elevating “sext” messages into fine works of art. Massachusetts-bred artist Erin. M. Riley, a weaver who hails from the Cape Cod area, turns sexy selfies she finds on the Internet into somber tapestries. Riley, 29, earned her BFA at the Massachusetts School of Art and Design in 2007. The notoriety increased her visibility in the art world, but when Playboy magazine offered to profile the artist, even Riley questioned the wisdom of participating. “I had some thoughts about, ‘Is this the best idea — to further sexualize my work?’” Riley said. Riley’s work isn’t just based on erotic selfies, it’s inspired by the digital era in general, she said: “On Twitter was the

first time I found a selfie. I found this one girl’s profile, and it was just pictures of her. I was kind of amazed and fascinated that every tweet was just a picture of her in the nude or her underwear.” Riley was drawn to these images due to her experiences “growing up on Friendster and Myspace and Facebook, and relating to your peers through images,” she said.

“It’s looking at the sadder side of making images,” she said. Not all of Riley’s work depicts nude women — there are also images of guns, drugs and car crashes — which is a separate but related aspect of her work, she said. “I was researching the effects of trauma, arrests, deaths, things that lead to single parent households, or how young women develop and have daddy issues or become hypersexual,” she said. “The women drive the work, but I feel like it all connects.” Few of her subjects have contacted Riley, and many are unaware the tapestries exist, said Riley. “Nobody is really satisfied by real-life relationships anymore,” Riley believes. “We need the constant thrill of ‘likes’ on a phone.” SAM NEWHOUSE @scnewhouse

CIA lied about interrogation methods: US Senate report Safety concerns. The release of the report has prompted a boost of security at U.S. facilities abroad. The CIA routinely misled the White House and Congress over its harsh interrogation program for terrorism suspects, and its methods were more brutal than the agency acknowledged, a Senate report said on Tuesday. The program, devised by two agency contractors to squeeze information from suspects after the 9/11 attacks, was ineffective and never led to the disruption of a single plot, the report by the Senate Intelligence Committee said. The program ran from 2002 to 2006 and involved questioning al Qaeda and other captives in secret detention facilities in

The report said the CIA had tried to justify its use of the program by giving examples of what it called “thwarted” terrorist plots and suspect captures, but the “representations were inaccurate and contradicted by the CIA’s own records.” It says that during one of the

Uber drivers say $130 in India can buy a clean record

Web-based taxi. Delhi’s government banned Uber from operating in the Indian capital. How much does it cost to buy a clean background check in India’s capital? Drivers for Uber Technologies Inc., say

the equivalent of $130. Uber requires drivers in India to submit a character certificate endorsed by police. This can be obtained for a bribe regardless of qualifications, according to three drivers for the company. Police deny this. The Dec. 6 rape of a 26-year-old office worker in a well-to-do section of New Delhi has sparked a national

debate on how to regulate taxis, long considered one of India’s safer options for getting around. “It’s not very rare for this kind of thing to happen here,” Raj Kumar, who started driving for Uber three months ago, said of the rape. A document from police certifying good character can be bought for 8,000 rupees ($130), Kumar said. BLOOMBERG

OMG! NYC architect turns dumpster into inflatable classroom in city street School-time is a whole load of rubbish — well, that’s true for a New York blow-up space fitted inside a refuse container. The Inflato Dumpster works as a huge canvas of inflatable polyethylene and mylar material that transforms a vacant garbage hold into a classroom that caters for workshops, screenings and musical performances. The New York-based architect behind the concept says that locals will have no qualms using a giant trash can for learning. Where did you get the idea to turn a refuse container into a classroom? I was very interested in exploring how we could expand and play with the idea of public space in New York. I wanted to make something that would be beneficial to my neighborhood for people to share knowledge in a new type of learning space.

Inflato Dumpster / JOHN LOCKE

Do passers-by find the sight a bit odd? Most do, but the funny thing is that some people will just walk right by like nothing is going on. That’s part of being a New Yorker, not being fazed by anything. Does it smell funny inside the dumpster? Not really, you are inside the inflatable material, so you never come into contact with the metal of the dumpster. Also, with the fan blowing the fresh air is constantly circulating. Among them have been charges against a mostly white cast playing Middle Eastern characters, and comments by star Christian Bale comparing Moses to a terrorist. Joel Edgerton, who plays villainous

son who felt like he didn’t really belong.

How did you react to seeing yourself bald, tanned and bejeweled? This is the most extreme makeover I’ve ever had. I’m also dealing with the ego of me pretending to be the pharaoh of Egypt. Sometimes I look at myself and say, “Yeah, I belong in this movie.” Other times I think I don’t. It’s important that Rameses isn’t wholly evil. He wasn’t just some onedimensional fascist villain. He was more like an overlooked

Throw in the shovel.

Do you think Bible/Torah stories can appeal to secular audiences? [Bale]’s Moses is struggling with the idea of being that person who has to undertake this monumental task. I love the humanity that’s imbued in that.

Just the facts

Aiming for realism There are at least a few semirational scientific explanations for some of the plagues and the parting of the Red Sea. In the parting of the Red Sea there’s a kind of wink, or tip of the hat, to a scientific explanation, but it was more about Ridley’s practical, bare-bones approach to visualize this story that lives in our imaginations when we read it in a book. How

do you create the parting of the Red Sea? Do you do the shiny wall of water on either side, like they did in “The Ten Commandments”? Ridley was inspired by nature documentaries and footage of receding waters in tsunamis. He didn’t want to make it super-scientific, but just he wanted to find a way to visually achieve that on screen. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

Tea Leoni: Back at work Interview. The actress knew who to ask for advice about her big role. It took surprisingly little for Tea Leoni to take on a lead role in “Madam Secretary” — just word from her kids that they’d rather not have her around that much. “I’d been struggling for a while with this idea of committing to something that could be — potentially, we hope — a long endeavor,” she remembers. “I was walking across the street with my son, who’s 12, and I said, ‘I’m thinking about doing this thing. If I do this, I could be very busy for a while.’ He looks up at me and is like, ‘Mom, it’s totally fine.’ I was like, ‘Really?’ And he says, ‘Yeah. We were really getting sick of you anyway.’ So it was

great to have that blessing, honestly.” On the series, Leoni plays Secretary of State Elizabeth McCord, and she admits that many people have jumped to the same conclusion when it comes to her model for the character — former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. But she insists they’re completely off-base. “I’ve certainly been asked if I met with Hillary. And obviously it’s the blond hair, right off the bat. I swore, I said, ‘No, it’s Kissinger,’” Leoni jokes. She tried not to do too much secretary research because her character is promoted to the job from a professor gig. “If they had asked me — and let’s face it, they wouldn’t have — to play a seated Secretary of State or a lifelong politician who eases into that role — again, they never would’ve cast me

— I think I would’ve done a hell of a lot more research,” Leoni admits. “I’ve sort of enjoyed embracing coming in without that experience and without that mind-set. I did have coffee with Madeleine Albright, though. That was one of the hottest coffees I’ve ever had. I don’t mean literally hot coffee, I mean a really fabulous experience. She’s a pistol; she’s amazing. And she told me some funny stories.”

Shoe drama Leoni finds McCord easy to relate to. “I certainly do when I think about the heels that I’m wearing and the hours that I keep and my children at home. Those three things are very much the same,” she says. “The shoes, goddamn it, can we just talk about the

Star Fish Market 3089 Washington St., Roxbury I absolutely love Star Fish! I have been eating their delicious fish sandwiches since I was a child! Everything is good there. Q&A JOHN WATERS GETS READY FOR CHRISTMAS Interview. The director is taking his annual Christmas show on the road again. Over the course of his career, John Waters accomplished a difficult feat — the cult director and lo-fi shock artist has over time gained a following so large that he’s now a reference point for the mainstream. Every December, Waters makes the rounds for “A John Waters Christmas,” in which he combines storytelling and comedy as a way for fans to brace for and embrace the holidays. When did you decide to take on Christmas as a topic?

Well, I took it on the way Johnny Mathis took it on, only the opposite way. I mean, I do love Christmas. Now I love it because I have 17 jobs. I’m always, like, a drag queen on Halloween, but if it’s Christmas, I’m working. I tour up until the night before I throw my annual Christmas party, which I’ve had for 45 years. Is there a fine line between reverence and irreverence when it comes to Christmas? My show is for people who love it and who hate it. I understand that if I wasn’t Christian that I would be pissed off looking at a Nativity scene in front of the State Capitol. And I am against that. But I do go — like a crazy person goes to haunted houses on Halloween — to

Yes, it was a very big deal. Nothing bad ever happened on Christmas — except a Christmas tree did fall on my grandmother. It turns out that happens a lot. I didn’t realize this. I thought we were the only [family at] Christmas where the tree fell on my grandmother. But the tree falls over a lot; it’s a common trauma. NOLAN GAWRON @MetroBOS letters@metro.us

WELLBEING

Look like an Angel Fitness. Alessandra Ambrosio’s heavenly body didn’t get that way through divine intervention. If there is a way to “win the Victoria’s Secret Fashion show, it’s by getting to wear the coveted Fantasy Bra. This year, for the first time, there were two, worn by Angels Alessandra Ambrosio and Adriana Lima. Designed by jeweler Pascal Mouawad, this year’s lingerie creation is encrusted with 16,000 rubies, diamonds and sapphires, priced at $2 million — each. Oh, and they took about 1,380 hours to make, which, as the 33-year-old Ambrosio tells Metro, is almost as much time as she spends staying in shape. Alessandra Ambrosio with one of the two Fantasy Bra creations for the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. / GETTY IMAGES

Throughout the year, I try to exercise three times a week, but one or two months before the show, I start working out daily. I try to diversify my workout: I like Boot Camp, for example, which is 30 minutes of running and 30 minutes on the floor with weights — it’s a good full-body training [regime] that I do twice a week. I’m also a fan of Pilates, which I do two to three times a week, as well as a ballet barre workout, too. I do yoga once a week just to stretch out the strain caused by all those exercises. Do you change your diet, too? I just try to eat healthier, even though my lifestyle in general is to be as healthy as I can. So I cut out some junk food at this point. If I want to have pizza, I’d have one with goat cheese and mushrooms — and I always have one slice. ELODIE NOËL, MWN @MetroBOS

Diet

How would you describe your diet in general? I grew up in Brazil so I like healthy, homemade food. Every day, I try to eat fresh. For lunch, I would cook some chicken breast and make a salad, for example, and I would have sushi for dinner. Do you have a nostalgic childhood dish? My grandmother used to

make hand-cut french fries for me when I was younger — I just loved them. I also remember this chocolate cake she used to bake for me. My other grandmother is Polish and she makes pierogi — it’s like pasta filled with potatoes and the dressing is bacon with butter — which is very heavy, but I love it. Every time I go back to Brazil, I’ll have it.

If the Packers and Seahawks met right now on a neutral field, you’d have to think long and hard about which team to place a bet on.

When Calvin Johnson is healthy and the Lions are at home, they’re unbeatable. Johnson averaged 152 yards over the past two weeks.

The Ravens are back into their old mode of being the average team no one wants to face down the stretch. The win at Miami was mighty impressive.

The Texans haven’t beaten a sure-fire playoff team all season, so it’s hard to believe that they’ll somehow become one themselves in the next month.

Packers (10-3) It’s gotten to the point with the Packers that if you don’t see double-digits on the board within the first few minutes of the game, you wonder if there’s been a major injury or something. The Packers had just seven points after one quarter Monday night. But by halftime, they were up 31-7 on the Falcons.

Denver didn’t wow anyone with its seven-point win over Buffalo Sunday and Peyton Manning hasn’t cracked 200 yards passing in the past two weeks.

That Thanksgiving loss to the Eagles still stings despite the Cowboys putting up 41 points at Chicago. They get a rematch with the Birds in Philly this Sunday.

If only the Steelers took care of business against the league’s dregs earlier in the season, they’d be battling the Pats, Broncos and Colts for a top seed.

I guarantee that Johnny Manziel (Cleveland’s starter for Sunday) has been called much worse than a “midget” by any number of club-goers in the past week.

Calling fraud here. In the past three weeks they’ve lost two games by 11-plus points and had a three-point home win. They’re the Colts of the NFC bad opponent bullies.

Every game from here on out is obviously a playoff game for the Bengals. They’re at Cleveland this Sunday, home against the Broncos in Week 16 and at Pittsburgh in Week 17.

The Dolphins had the look of a playoff team right up until the second half of Sunday’s home loss to the Ravens. The Fins could muster only three second half points vs. Baltimore.

Since Halloween, the Patriots have faced the Broncos, Colts, Lions, Packers and Chargers. They got through that brutal stretch with just one loss.

Give the Colts credit for grabbing a one-point road win over the Browns, but in no way does this team look like a Super Bowl contender going forward.

The Chargers nearly beat the Patriots at their own game on Sunday night, employing the old bend-but-don’t-break strategy, forcing three field goals.

Buffalo is 3-0 against the NFC this season. It will be hard to maintain that unblemished mark considering they host the Packers this Sunday.

In the past two weeks, the Rams have scored 76 points. They’ve allowed zero. Things are absolutely getting interesting in the House That Isaac Bruce built.

One word you wouldn’t use to describe the Patriots’ 23-14 Sunday night win over the Chargers is “pretty.” This one was a grind from the start, and when the Pats couldn’t convert a second-and-goal from the 1-yard line into seven points on their opening drive, we got a little preview of the frustrating New England offense for the majority of the night. How frustrating? After throwing an interception at the end of the second quarter, the Patriots went three-and-out four straight times in the third quarter. Despite those issues, New England remained in the game from start to finish due to its strong defense. The Pats “D” allowed just one touchdown in the second quarter. That’s it. The Chargers got seven more points in the second quarter on a fumble recovery with the Pats defense watching from the sideline. San Diego was blanked in the second half, never going on a drive longer than five

plays or 30 yards. New England’s average points allowed per game was lowered to 20.5, good for ninth in the NFL. It’s an impressive feat, and even more impressive when you consider the team was without its two 2012 NFL first-rounders in Chandler Jones and Dont’a Hightower. Hightower had taken the “green dot” (the helmet that allows players to communicate with coaches on sideline) from Jerod Mayo after he went down for the season, but with Hightower out, the duty fell on second-year linebacker Jamie Collins. And he was more than ready for the responsibility. Collins, who has 95 tackles on the year, led the Pats with nine combined tackles, including two sacks. Not only that, but the score dictates the level of communication he kept with his teammates and coaches. “He’s done a good job of rushing, an excellent job of communicating and working with his teammates and getting other guys in the right

MLB. Robertson flees NY, signs with the White Sox David Robertson won’t be Mariano Rivera’s long-term successor after all. The Chicago White Sox inked Robertson to a fouryear, $46 million deal, highlighting a big day of moves by the AL Central club. The Yankees never even made a formal offer to Robertson, according to ESPN, after signing reliever Andrew Miller to a four-year, $36 million contract, and with Dellin Betances returning. Chicago also traded for Jeff Samardzija on Tuesday. METRO

spots,” coach Bill Belichick told reporters earlier this week. “I really can’t say enough about the job he did [Sunday] night.” Collins wasn’t alone in stepping up. Players like Jonathan Casillas, Alan Branch and Akeem Ayers weren’t even on the team at the start of the season, but they’ve joined during its course and played prominent roles in Sunday’s win as well. There are never any guarantees that acquisitions like those will pay off, but they have for the Pats this season. “All three of those players have definitely helped us,” Belichick said, “both with their playing time, their performance and I’d say the rapid pace at which they’ve picked things up.” With the Patriots setting their sights on a first-round bye and home-field advantage, it’s clearly all hands on deck from here on out.

Brooklyn looking to trade away major stars The Brooklyn Nets appear ready to blow things up, a little over a year after acquiring Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett from the Celtics, with this season’s team off to an 8-11 start.
