Body of Hernandez’s alleged victim had wallet, keys: Witness The man who Aaron Hernandez is charged with murdering had a wallet, cash and two sets of keys in his pockets when his body was found near the home of the former New England Patriots star, a police officer testified on Thursday. North Attleborough Police Captain Joseph DiRenzo said the body of semiprofessional football player Odin Lloyd was also found with a Boston Red Sox baseball hat, a towel, a marijuana cigar known as a blunt and five shell casings strewn nearby at an industrial park in the town on the evening of June 17, 2013. Prosecutors have cited the presence of a wallet on Lloyd’s body as a sign that he had not been the victim of a robbery. Hernandez sat quietly next to one of his attorneys during the testimony. As he entered the courtroom, he mouthed the words, “Are you OK?” to his fiancée Shayanna Jenkins, who was sitting in the gallery.

Harvard University this week banned its professors from having sex with undergraduate students, The Boston Globe reported Thursday. The ban came in a conduct policy revision prompted by a review of Harvard’s school-wide Title IX policy on sexual harassment, the Globe reported. The previous policy did not fully recognize the “unequal status” between instructors and students, administrators said. The policy now explicitly bans undergrads and professors from “romantic or sexual relationships,” regardless of whether the student is studying under the professor. GLOBE
Commuters ask the questions What the truck? The city wants to know: “What’s your question about getting around Boston in the future?” The people who live and work in Dudley Square are used to travel inconveniences, but one thing they are not used to is being asked what they would like done about it. But on Thursday, community members were welcomed by the open ears of the Go Boston 2030 “What’s Your Question” truck, a questioncollecting mobile that has been visiting city neighborhoods since Wednesday. Hot chocolate and a space heater were added as extra incentive for snow-stricken travelers. The questions submitted by commuters will serve as a basis for the transportation plan Boston would like to have in place by the year
2030. So far, the truck has stopped in Mattapan, Roxbury and Jamaica Plain neighborhoods. For decades, transportation planning in Boston has used a conventional model for public input — community meetings. But not everyone has the time, or the public transportation access, to attend such gatherings. “We wanted to break away from that model and try and really understand what our residents care about when it comes to transportation,” said Vineet Gupta, the Boston Transportation Department director of policy and planning. “Good ideas often results from a question.” Roxbury residents Reynolds Graves and his girlfriend Rachel Redd, both 26, both wrote their questions on pieces of plastic that hung in the truck’s window. Each stops brings in between 75 and 100 questions, organizers said. Roughly 2,000 questions have been
submitted online. Redd asked about improvements to late-night bus service, something they agree is desperately needed in their neighborhood. “I asked, ‘Will buses stay open past 12 a.m.? Because what if I go out late and don’t want to drive?” Redd said. Graves was more concerned about whether Boston can look forward to an elevated T track by 2030. “I think an elevated train would actually help with traffic on the street,” said Graves. Mattapan resident Al Ortiz, 43, posed a question about bus reliability, as he has suffered more long waits and tedious bus rides than he’d like to recount. “Usually it takes me 15 minutes from where I live to Forest Hills, but it took me an hour-and-a-half [Wednesday],” said Ortiz, adding that he’s pleased with the initiative. “I think it‘ll make a difference,” he said.

Police. Man kills woman, injures second woman, cop, in Cape Cod shooting A member of the U.S. Coast Guard allegedly shot three people early Thursday in Bourne, killing one, police said. Police say Adrian Loya shot two women, both of whom were also in the Coast Guard and a police officer. One of the women died. The shooting reportedly happened around 2:15 a.m. in a condominium complex on Round House Road. Later Thursday, Loya was arraigned on eight counts, including
murder, according to Boston. com. He is being held without bail. The State Police Bomb Squad was on scene to deal with hoax bomb devices allegedly placed near the crime scene by the suspect. The Cape Cod Times reported the suspect set a car ablaze to prevent responders from reaching the condo. The paper also reports an explosion went off at the scene and multiple weapons were found. Baker: State to develop regulations for Uber, Lyft Regu-later. Rideshare services welcomed state move, but taxi companies disappointed. Rideshare companies, including Lyft and Uber, can continue to operate in Massachusetts while the state’s Department of Public Utilities discusses how best to regulate the industry, Gov. Charlie Baker said today. Baker’s come under pressure to devise rules for the rideshare companies after a series of incidents involving Uber drivers. In December, a Boston Uber driver was charged with kidnapping and raping a Cambridge woman. Last month, a Boston police officer was charged with assaulting an

Uber driver and hurling racial slurs at him in Southie. The announcement that Uber and Lyft can continue to operate in the state was met with mixed reaction. Rideshare companies welcomed the decision; the taxi industry did not. “We applaud the governor’s desire to establish a reg-
ulatory framework for ridesharing,” said Chelsea Wilson, a spokeswoman for Lyft. “The regulations passed at the end of last year were a positive step forward and we look forward to continue to working with state leaders on rules for our peer-to-peer model that prioritize public safety and consumer choice while still
allowing innovative industries to thrive.” Tiffany Mitchell, manager of Top Cab and City Cab in Boston, disagreed. “It’s saddening to me that he would allow something that’s illegal to continue until they make it legal,” she said. “It’s sickening to me.” Local cab companies have been pushing for tighter regulation, saying the public’s safety could be at risk if rideshare drivers and their cars can avoid the screening imposed on licensed taxis. Rules that took effect last month allow a six-month grace period while Massachusetts constructs a licensing framework. The state’s aim is to ensure “the enhanced safety of drivers and riders,” said Baker. DANNY MCDONALD @DMacCash daniel.mcdonald@metro.us

Attack. Stoughton cop shoots man wielding knife after vehicle accident A police officer in Stoughton shot a knife-wielding assailant in broad daylight Thursday, according to multiple reports. Stoughton police would only confirm that an officer had been involved in a shooting. However, multiple news outlets are reporting that the person shot was wielding a knife. Details were scarce Thursday afternoon. “The suspect was involved in an automobile accident,” Stoughton Police Chief Paul Shastany told Wicked Local Stoughton. “He had a disagreement with the officer. There was a foot chase, he drew a knife on the officer, and the officer was forced to shoot.” Fox 25 reported that the officer was then taken to Norwood Hospital suffering from chest pains. His condition unknown at the time. Meanwhile, the station reported that the suspect was transported to Boston Medical Center with unknown

WOODCHUCK CHOMP Maybe Jimmy the groundhog was in a crappy mood. After all, he had just been hauled out of a warm limo into glaring TV lights and the freezing Wisconsin winter. Or maybe Mayor Jonathan Freund was a little too chummy; slapping on a look of mock-seriousness as he leaned in to hear the rodent’s prediction about the coming spring. Whatever the reason, Jimmy took a bite out of hizzoner’s ear. The mayor jumped, the groundhog wranglers scrambled, and it was hilarious. Well, maybe it wasn’t so funny for the mayor, but I suspect many residents in the ironically named Sun Prairie are still giggling. And in the aftermath of what I’m now calling “Nibblegate,” I’ve had an idea about how we might improve government. Every time politicos want to stage a dog-and-pony …or mayor-and-large-rat … show, we ought to make sure we have a cranky critter on hand to keep them in line. (And no, Congressman Darrell Issa does not already have this job.) Imagine: a politician steps up to the microphone to score

Halfway through his second paragraph, the squirrel on his shoulder is twitching; by the time he says “incentivize,” it is frothing at the mouth; and as soon as he unfurls “I know all Americans will join me …” CHOMP! This would be fantastic. A true “bite”-partisan solution to needless political posturing. “I’m calling for a Congressional investigation into …” CHOMP. “Our party is trying to help people, while our opponents are just protecting their own interests …” CHOMP. “I am outraged that such accusations …” CHOMP.
Perhaps we could get those two sharks from Katy Perry’s halftime show. Kidding aside, every week in D.C., players from both sides snatch up mics and let fly with patented nonsense to whip up their side, demonize the other, and frustrate all attempts at cooperation. They do it because they don’t think voters can figure it out, or won’t know any better. This makes us all less informed, promotes partisan animosities, and in a word: bites. Maybe it’s time something bites back.

Return of a hitman
Jonathan Banks, left, brings back Mike, the fixer from “Breaking Bad,” on “Better Call Saul” — a prequel about laywer Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk, right). It premieres Sunday at 10 p.m. on AMC.
Interview. Jonathan Banks says Mike Ehrmantraut will be the same old Mike on “Better Call Saul.”
Co-stars
Familiar faces What’s it like working with Bob on the new show? I got my first paycheck 47 years ago, and I’ve been lucky enough to work for 47 years, and it’s not like there weren’t terribly dry times. But I had never seen in television or in film a load like that. The amount of dialogue and monologues, I thought, how in the world is he ever gonna do this? And boy did he.
Have you given him a hard time about the wigs he’s wearing? Of course. Bob gives Bob a hard time about the wigs.
Obsessive “Breaking Bad” fans had some comfort in the wake of the show’s finale: Creator Vince Gilligan announced he was planning to create a spinoff prequel called “Better Call Saul,” about everyone’s favorite seedy lawyer, Saul Goodman — or Jimmy McGill,

as he was known before his glory days. While Bob Odenkirk will, of course, reprise his role, Jonathan Banks was also announced as a returning cast member, in the role of endlessly calm hitman/ private investigator/fixer Mike Ehrmantraut. But don’t expect him to be quite as goofy as Saul. Banks assures us he’s the same old Mike. What did Vince Gilligan say when he asked you to sign on for the prequel? Three or four years ago, in the show, I was dropping my granddaughter off at the house
with balloons, and then I go shoot people. I say to her, your momma’s waiting, now go on, and Vince was directing that show, and I said to Vince when we cut, “That’s my granddaughter. That is not my daughter. Whenever Mike is what Mike is, it has something to do with his son.” And Vince said, “Well, hmm” and when Peter called me 13 months ago, he said, “Remember when you said…”
Will we learn a lot more about Mike now? I always liked that you never know quite where and what Mike was from, and I hope that continues. I hope there will always be a little mystery about him.
Have you come up with your own version of Mike’s back story? I can’t tell you exactly because
Do you think there’s hope for him? Among all those characters, Mike knows he lost his soul,
they will throw me to the wolves and burn me at the stake and all that kind of stuff. I’ll be coming up with Mike’s back story 20 years from now.

and Mike doesn’t forgive himself. At the same time, buried in there is a decent man who does some really horrible things, but if he has a flaw, it’s…I don’t think he thinks he can save other people, but he does have a tendency to try to protect them. Since Mike is so smart, how does he get mixed up with these criminal types? Well, we all are fallen. And some of us fall a lot further. LISA WEIDENFELD @LisaWeidenfeld lisa.weidenfeld@metro.us

When you work on a show set during a zombie apocalypse, how worried are you usually about job security? We all talk about it, but we don’t let it overwhelm us. We get to the task at hand. If you’re alive, then you have something relevant to say, so let’s say that. But we all know that that aspect of the show precedes itself, and we know that’s a part of the deal, so everybody stays amazingly focused and present because of the very fact that we don’t know when it’s going to be your day.
What’s been the most fun aspect of the show’s extreme levels of popularity? Well … [laughs] I don’t know if I can say it in an interview. Actually, you know, being able to go to these conventions and to really meet the families — like three generations of “Walking Dead” fans — that kind of stuff has been most gratifying because I just feel that the show in one

It’s really been impressive how huge the ratings are. Well, it’s gumbo, man. It’s got something for everybody. But at its core, I think it’s appealing to that child in us all that likes scary things. It’s impressive how effortlessly diverse the casting for “The Walking Dead” is compared to other shows. How long do you think it will be until networks start following suit?
Check out Metro.us Monday morning for Coleman’s thoughts about the shocking twists in Sunday’s mid-season premiere. That’s a good question. I hope it’s happening as we speak. I really do. And the world, it’s changing, man. We live in an international world now, so you’ve just got to teach these executives and make sure they’re opening their eyes, because that’s the real key. What are they greenlighting? If we can get the real fierce, dynamic network folks in place, you’ll see it. It’s happening all around us, and so it’s time for network TV to reflect. NED EHRBAR

John Oliver explains it all Comedy. The hit show “Last Week Tonight” returns on Sunday at 11.
Despite the accolades and rave reviews John Oliver has received over the last year, the comedian still says he’s taken aback by the popularity of his HBO show “Last Week Tonight.” “I’m still sort of bamboozled by the level of success of the show,” Oliver admits. “When we started, I didn’t want to let HBO down. I didn’t want to let down Jon Stewart because he taught me everything...and now I feel like we don’t want to let down the people who watch the show.”

Like “The Daily Show” (where Oliver spent many years as a correspondent), “Last Week Tonight” both parodies the news and illuminates undercover issues. Oliver and his team were often praised for their coverage of topics like the struggle of Afghan translators to get visas to move to the United States. John Oliver spoke to reporters at HBO’s New York headquarters this week. / ERIC LIEBOWITZ, HBO

Satire or news?
The journalism question Oliver is firmly in the camp that his show is, at its heart, a comedy program, but his staff did recently add four additional researchers to the mix — all have strong traditional jour-
nalism backgrounds. “We’re pretty rigorous in terms of fact-checking. We love to show people things that they haven’t seen before,” he explains. “They will fact-check numbers in documentaries or the news. They’ll say, ok that thing is not as true as they say.”

The lowdown: “Jupiter Ascending doesn’t care if you mock it. It’s a super-expensive, quasi-explicable sci-fi semidisaster in the vein of “Zardoz and David Lynch’s “Dune, only not nearly as ridiculous as either of those. In fact, it’s insufficiently silly if anything, and as it wears on it starts to make a kind of sense and even cook. Like any self-respecting fantasy mess, it takes 30 to 45 minutes to find its footing, and even then things are rickety. But after a handful of false starts, some confusing backstabbing and the utter wasting of Gugu Mbatha-Raw (as a half-deer), “Jupiter sorts itself out into a loose “King Lear in space, only with three crappy kids instead of two. Cartoon. The second ‘SpongeBob’ movie is reliably and totally nuts When their secret recipe for the Krabby Patty — the No. 1 foodstuff of Bikini Bottom — goes missing, SpongeBob (voice of Tom Kenny) teams with villain Plankton (Mr. Lawrence) to find it. A tighter, more clever screenplay could have resulted, but a certain sloppiness has long been part of “SpongeBob”’s charm, as its real strengths lie not in the details of what happens — which are usually pretty nuts — but in the constant tossing out of gags. Like “The Three Stooges,” it’s all about the amount of jokes, not the quality. Good-bad puns abound
SpongeBob (voice of Tom Kenny) heads to the live-action surface to battle his obvious foe: a burger-loving pirate (Antonio Banderas). / PARAMOUNT PICTURES
(“Unleash the condiments!” “With relish!”), as do winking meta jokes, as when someone warns Banderas that he’s making the movie too long. These may be token jokes for adult viewers, but what has always distinguished “SpongeBob” from other toons is the way its humor tends to play to all ages. The dumb gags are meant to bring out the person who loves dumb gags in all of us, lurking deep inside though he or she may be. MATT PRIGGE

‘Motown’ gets the songs, but not the plot Review. The latest Broadway in Boston show is a good sing-along but lacks drama. “Motown The Musical” proves that a solid book isn’t necessary to make an entertaining jukebox musical. From the top, the sounds of one of music’s greatest periods fill the Boston Opera House at full volume and at dizzying speed, making it nearly impos-
sible to sit still. The Temptations, the Four Tops, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, the Supremes, Stevie Wonder and a young Michael Jackson are re-enacted with a winning authenticity. This near-sensory overload musical experience is strung together by the story of Berry Gordy’s creation of the Detroit hit-factory label, Motown. Unfortunately, the book was penned by Gordy, so he is portrayed as a near saint-like character who ends up a victim of the greed and lack of gratitude of the artists he made famous.

With their pleasant colors and warm textures, they seem peaceful enough, but a closer look reveals psychological subtleties that take advantage of our tendency to anthropomorphize. DANCE

Casey and Dancers perform this send-up of the film noir genre, set to music by Duke Ellington and other classic jazz composers, in which everyone, from the hard-boiled detective to the desperate femme fatale to the thick-headed mobster, is tap dancing.
“Dreamgirls,” a musical about Diana Ross and the Supremes, has a much different take on Gordy’s probity, but the reality is probably somewhere in the middle. Whatever Gordy’s truth is, the fact remains that his Motown was a veritable machine, and this show nails truncated versions of more than 40 of its biggest hits, courtesy of a very talented ensemble. Julius Thomas III delivers an impressive turn as the Motown

founder in spite of the script’s intermittent hokeyness, (a momentary bout of impotence that left Diana Ross singing “Whenever I’m near you, I hear a symphony,” is especially cringe-worthy). Marvin Gaye’s equally awkward reference to his father (who later killed the singer) is another weird moment that was mercifully overshadowed by Jarran Muse’s powerful rendition of “What’s Going On.” If you’ve ever seen Diana

Sure, he could order our exhausted Army to invade the expansive region of Syria, Jordan, and Iraq where ISIS appears to operate from, but then what? BOW DOWN TO EDELMAN
Julian Edelman wasn’t named Super Bowl XLIX MVP. But he certainly should have been in the conversation. That honor went to Tom Brady, after the New England Patriots defeated the Seattle Seahawks 28-24 in Arizona last Sunday. To be completely honest — and this isn’t taking anything away from what either Brady or Edelman did in that game — I would have given the MVP to Malcolm Butler. The kid literally ripped the Lombardi Trophy out of the hands of Russell Wilson and Pete Carroll. He jumped a route and intercepted a ball that should have never been thrown in the first place. But Butler didn’t just make a great play. He made the only play the Patriots needed him to make. If Butler bats that ball down, sure, in any other situation, in any other game, that’s a “great play. But an incomplete pass on second down from the 1-yard line wasn’t going to win the Patriots the Super Bowl. In fact, anything other than an interception by Butler would have probably still led to a Seahawks win. There would’ve been no parade in Boston on Wednesday without Butler’s interception. That’s a fact. And while his story is a great one — undrafted rookie free agent who played the role of improbable hero — it’s not

the best one. That honor goes to Edelman, who nearly went undrafted in 2009, when he was taken in the seventh-and-final round, 232nd overall (out of 256 total picks). He was a quarterback in college, a threeyear starter at Kent State. His senior year, he was the team’s leading passer and leading rusher. He could do it all. Fast-forward to 2015: Here’s Edelman, one of the Patriots’ most reliable players. He had 1,056 receiving yards in 2013,
and 972 receiving yards in 2014. And don’t forget about his talents in the return game. Last Sunday, he had nine receptions for 109 yards and a touchdown, which ended up being the game-winning score in the Super Bowl. Again, this is a college quarterback who’s making this type of impact as a receiver in the Super Bowl. As former NHL defenseman Ryan Whitney said on Thursday’s podcast, “That’s like playing defense at Curry College, and

then going to the NHL as a forward on the Bruins’ power play. Edelman deserves credit for making the most of his opportunity. And that opportunity also came on the defensive end. In 2011, Edelman was used as a defensive back late in the season because of injuries. The Patriots went on to the Super Bowl that year, and in the AFC Championship — a 23-20 win over the Baltimore Ravens — Edelman was used as both a wide receiver and
defensive back, even covering Anquan Boldin at times. Let that sink in for a moment. Then think about what he did against the Seahawks in the Super Bowl. Sure, Brady was the one throwing him the football. And the Patriots don’t hoist the Lombardi Trophy without Malcolm Butler’s interception. For those reasons, Edelman wasn’t the Super Bowl MVP. But the road he took to even be in that conversation, is a story for the ages.
