Business of love not so rosy at Boston exchange A rose by any other name. The U.S. flower industry has a few thorns, but its practitioners have thick skin.

The business of love isn’t what it used to be. In the heyday of the multibillion-dollar wholesale flower industry, local farmers grew their blossoms and cutthroat vendors and salesmen hashed out deals in a floral stock exchange. But things changed as wholesalers started ordering flowers from around the globe, piling up fuel and broker charges, and as the concept of romantic gifts grew to include Groupon getaways and gadgets. “People don’t buy flowers anymore,” said third-generation flower man David Brown as he sat in the tiny office of The Boston Flower Exchange on Albany Street in South Boston. “Valentine’s used to be the biggest week of the year. But we pay very high prices for our product.”

Brown is the Exchange shareholder and owner of Chester Brown Wholesale Florist, which has been a member of the exchange since 1933. “It’s changed dramatically since I’ve been in the business,” Brown said. “It used to be only Massachusetts grown, then it became New England. Then in the ’60s and ’70s, we started bringing flowers in on planes. So we buy from all over the world now.” Brown says the exchange works on an asking margin of about 40 percent, with sales usually closing with a profit in the mid-to-low 30s. The exchange receives 500 to 800 boxes a week from across the globe, with 300 from South America. The average box holds about 300 stems. Brown’s crew starts at 3:30 a.m. as flowers arrive from farms in Ecuador, Holland, Italy, Israel, France, Australia, Thailand and Costa Rica. Pandemonium ensues as buyers haggle, and by noon, the shop is quiet. Brown’s wife, Ann, sits at a desk across from him. The couple met at the exchange decades earlier, when Ann was

a buyer. “We like to say we were intimate without being intimate,” he says of their romance, which blossomed from friendship to love. Ann describes the work as grueling, but still loves to get flowers as a gift, and David loves to give them. Peonies are her favorite. “There is a hardness to this industry,” David said. “Our competitors will come in and sneak around to get prices. We have a saying here: ‘Are you buyin’ or spyin’?’” Decades earlier, the warehouse was a “rough and tumble” place, David said. “There was a lot of alcohol and even some drugs then, in the ’70s and ’80s, it was bad in here.”

Ann calls the hours crazy. “It’s hard to have a normal social life when you go to bed at 7 p.m.,” she said. “It’s better now. If we were like that now, we wouldn’t be able to survive. It’s too competitive,” said David. “We have to give 110 percent.” “Something happens to your skin, when your work with roses,” says Boston Exchange flower salesman Patrick Porter, 55, a 30-year veteran. “You become almost immune to the thorns. Your skin turns like leather. You become cured.” Years ago, 2,000 customers a day would buy flowers in the exchange. That’s dropped to about 1,500. The Internet has put many brick-and-mortar flower shops out of business and has made it easier for floral designers to do without warehouses full of buds, Brown said. He puts the price of a dozen red roses around Valentine’s Day at $75-$125. “There are guys out there selling roses for $19.99 a dozen. And then there are people selling roses for $200 a dozen, and they get away with it,” Brown said.

Shuttle buses once again replaced red line trains at the JFK/UMASS station on Thursday. / NICOLAUS CZARNECKI/METRO

T: Red Line can’t be drawn in snow Transit. There’s only one thing you can count on with the T. It isn’t going to work. There’s always something lately when it comes to the T. On Thursday morning that something was a downed utility pole near the Red Line’s JFK stop that snarled traffic and delayed shuttle buses. Shuttle buses were continuing to replace Red Line service between JFK and Braintree stops Thursday morning. The downed pole scuttled the shuttle plan. That mess prompted the MBTA to ask customers to consider using the commuter rail from Braintree and Quincy Center stations to avoid JFK. By 8:30 a.m., the utility pole and wires that were clogging traffic had been “re-

moved or repositioned,” according to MassDOT. Residual delays, however, remained. Both the Red and Orange lines are running limited service. Only one Orange train operated back and forth between Oak Grove and Wellington all day. Delays also hampered the Green Line. Historically bad weather has beset the T for almost three weeks. MBTA General Manager Beverly Scott announced she was resigning from her post on Wednesday, as riders screamed about service problems. Thursday, Gov. Charlie Baker said he had a productive meeting with Scott and her senior team, the purpose of which was to “discuss how to move forward at the MBTA.” “It was a good session for us to listen and learn,” he said. “We value Dr. Scott and her team’s efforts during this historical winter which has

Angry tweets •

posed incredible challenges to our transportation system, and we appreciate the hard work of the MBTA employees who are still operating around the clock to help commuters.” Baker, after that meeting, denied that he had forced Scott out, according to State House News Service. Big fix. Charlestown man’s fund wants $300M to drag T into the 21st century Last week, Janssen McCormick’s wife, Kelly, tried to take the Orange Line one stop, from Charlestown to the North End. That one stop took two hours. The experience prompted McCormick, a 30-year-old teacher from Charlestown, to launch a GoFundMe page. His aim? To raise $300 million for the ailing MBTA. As of press time, more than 60 people — the vast majority of whom he doesn’t know — have donated. Some

have given $50. He’s raised $1,280 in eight days. “A lot of people do recognize that it’s tongue in cheek,” McCormick told Metro. “They say, ‘I understand it’s a joke but let’s embarrass the T.’ I think people are just really frustrated.” McCormick said he really

wanted to raise $30 billion — just enough to drag the T into the 21st century, he said. But that was too many zeroes for GoFundMe. He settled for $300 million. State Sen. Thomas M. McGee, who heads the transportation committee, said the MBTA needs $3 billion of repairs. Asked if he’d chip in, McGee laughed. “I’ll have to take a look at it. What are his numbers at now?” DANNY MCDONALD

Meteorologists say a storm this weekend could dump as much as a foot of snow on Boston, starting on Saturday afternoon. Boston’s restaurant industry is worried that one of the biggest and busiest days on their calendar could be snowed out just when they need business. Bob Luz, president of the Massachusetts Restaurant Association, said during the 17day stretch that saw six feet of snow fall on Boston, many restaurants were closed or “virtually closed for six days. The weather, he said, “is having a crippling effect on us.

Some restaurant workers, he said, haven’t been able to make a living in three weeks. “I don’t think anyone in America has seen 17 days like this and those are just sales you’re not going to get back, he said. He said the industry is hoping people treat Valentine’s Day as a weekend-long holiday. But if the storm does slam the area, some restaurants could accept walk-ins on Valentine’s Day night, which is usually fully booked. “I think everyone hopes it brushes out to sea, he said. William Kovel, the owner of Catalyst in Cambridge’s Kendall Square, said this winter is the worst for restaurants in his 15 years in the industry. “The volume of the snow has just made it unbearable, he said. Valentine’s Day is “probably the biggest day of the first quarter for his business.

“It sounds bad. You see another storm coming and a lot of us are rolling our eyes, saying ‘Really? You got to be kidding me, he said. A trio of recent storms gave Boston its snowiest month-long period in its recorded history. Schools were cancelled, the T was shut and the city spent double its planned snow removal budget.

By late Thursday morning, Alan Dunham, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said the snow could start sometime Saturday afternoon and last into early Sunday. The worst of the storm will be Saturday night, just when cupid is supposed to be stringing his bow. The weekend promises to be blustery with wind speeds reaching 40 mph to 50 mph. “There’s potential for a significant storm to impact southern New England, said Dunham. If the storm intensifies farther north of Boston, said Dunham, the city will see less snow. If it intensifies farther south, the city will see more snow. “It’s still two-and-a-half days away, said Dunham. “Things can change. DANNY MCDONALD @DMacCash

THE WAR OF THE ROSES WINS TOO I am a father of daughters. From the day they were born, I have been madly in love with their every look, gesture, thought and smile. When they were little I admired their artwork and soccer playing. As they’ve grown older, I have been dazzled by the adults they are becoming. Along with my wife, they are my Valentines, and I can not imagine life without them. So I can’t know what the family of Kayla Mueller is going through. The death of that young Arizona woman in the hands of ISIS was unthinkable, cruel and horrendous; and it has clearly ignited a desire for revenge among many Americans. And yet, I find myself thinking a great deal about what she was attempting. She was trying to help people in need: Syrians who have lost their towns, their homes, family members and friends. People who

Debate is underway here in D.C. about what should come next on the military front, and that is proper. As much as we may dislike war, history tells us that sometimes vicious enemies will not cease their inhumanities unless forced. But there is something to be said for the extraordinary power of kindness and love too. Generosity, sympathy and a willingness to help others are every bit as woven into the fabric of America as is our

ability to do battle. And those qualities too, as much as F-16s, make us stronger in the world. It is, after all, easy for our far-flung enemies to preach hatred against the Americans if all that their people see are drones and missile attacks. It is harder when they see an American like Mueller, offering a kind look, an open hand, and help ... despite political, religious, ethnic and national differences. Enemies undoubtedly cower before America’s unsurpassed military might, but on this Valentine’s Day, it is good to remember that while weapons win wars, kindness wins people. And the merchants of hatred fear our love too.

Two decades. Celebrating 20 years of Metro, the largest global newspaper On Feb. 13, 1995, Metro launched its first-ever free newspaper edition in Stockholm, Sweden. Twenty years on, the newspaper has expanded across the globe to become the world’s largest global newspaper with over 20 million readers. Sakari Pitkänen, a former longtime employee of Metro, who since the mid-1990s served as editor of Metro Stockholm and then global editor-in-chief of Metro International, tells us the success story. At the time did you ever envision the paper becoming the global player it is today? Personally, I was too busy with getting Metro Stockholm on its feet! But certainly, the founders of the newspaper did have plans for an international expansion early on. In an ever-changing media landscape, what has made Metro stand out for two decades? Being free of charge, certainly. Pay-for newspapers across Europe were and are in decline, so it was very difficult for them to compete with Metro. With the advent of the

traditional newspaper. That’s where Metro came in. What’s more, unlike old newspapers, we followed the needs of the modern reader. We recognized that the reader now is much younger and more female. We felt we were geniuses! Sakari Pitkänen

To coincide with the 20th anniversary, you have written a book on the history of the newspaper. The book title is a curious one: “The Art of Making Enemies in the Whole World.” Is this what Metro has been about? Certainly in the first 10 years since we launched, wherever we started a new Metro edition, we were met with fierce resistance, from lawyers, from industrial action — even bikers were blocking our advertising in the U.S. I recall what our CEO in the early 2000s, Pelle Törnberg, said — and I am paraphrasing here: “If you want powerful enemies and a bad reputation, start a newspaper. If you want powerful enemies all over the world and need massive bad press everywhere, start a global newspaper.” ANTHONY JOHNSTON, METRO WORLD NEWS

Story ‘rebrands violence as romance’ The social media campaign #50DollarsNot50Shades is asking people to donate $50 to a domestic violence shelter rather than going to see the “Fifty Shades” movie. “The money you would have spent on movie tickets and a babysitter or movie tickets, popcorn and drinks will go towards serving victims of abusive relationships like the one glamorized in the ‘Fifty Shades’ series,” the campaign’s Facebook page reads. The hashtag’s creator, Gail Dines, sums up the story as “a naive, vulnerable, immature woman” trying to change “a sexual sadist by showering him with love.” That scenario plays out differently in the real world. “Women and girls need to know that should they meet a real Christian Grey, the end of that story will be them running for their lives, not living happily ever after.” DMITRY BELYEV

Our complicated relationship with ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ BDSM. For good, and naughty, the ‘Fifty Shades effect’ is real. Since its publication in June 2011, “Fifty Shades of Grey” has had an undeniable impact far beyond the book world. The BDSM-inclined Christian Grey and his steamy seduction of Anastasia Steele brought S&M experimentation into the mainstream. But besides increases of handcuff incidents and rope sales, the books have exposed a niche side of sex — for better and worse — creating what’s been dubbed “the Fifty Shades of Grey effect.”

With 60 percent of their customers being women, the “Fifty Shades of Grey” trilogy and its accompanying products quickly sold out at Passage. psychoanalyst and sexologist Catherine Blanc doesn’t see it replacing the missionary position in the majority of people’s sex lives. “We tend to think that our generation is freer than our grandparents’ generation, which is obviously untrue because every person makes their own way through the discovery of sexuality and eroticism,” she says. “Sexuality is a very personal journey.” Sex toys have been around “since the dawn of time — we have found ancient models made of wax and wood.” Blanc says our fantasies now are pretty much in line with what humans have always privately thought about and practiced. “People’s fantasies aren’t more extravagant than they have always been,” she says. “Domination, possession, submission are traditional elements of human sexuality.” But the sex specialist is adamant that just because a sex act is trendy, doesn’t mean it’s for everyone. “Some young ladies mistake what they want and what they want to want because society tells them to,” she says. “They are afraid to look [uptight].” So if reading about Christian and Ana’s adventures in the bedroom makes you want to get on the beaten track, go for it. FILM

Does ‘Fifty Shades’ fall limp? Perhaps it seemed E.L. James’ über-best-seller was too hot for the movies. And yet here it is anyway. But does the film actually have some merit? Are its sex scenes a letdown? What didn’t make the cut? We investigate. MATT PRIGGE UNIVERSAL PICTURES, FOCUS FEATURES

For starters, no narration tracks means none of Anastasia’s first-person musings, including clunkers like, “I work on my essay on ‘Tess of the d’Urbervilles.’ Damn, that woman was in the wrong place at the wrong time in the wrong century.”

Stay home

Steamy streaming sex

The “Fifty Shades” film is surprisingly skimpy on salaciousness. These naughtier films are all currently streaming:

(Netflix Instant) This is still pretty shocking, and the unrated cut on Netflix makes the big bonking centerpiece even longer, with Michael Douglas spending more time downtown — the kind of thing that still, amazingly, gets movies slapped with an NC-17.

‘In the Realm of the Senses’ (Hulu) Even in the book, Anastasia and Christian come nowhere near the couple in this scandalous Japanese art film from 1976, which features real, endless sex, with one hell of a capper.

‘The Night Porter’ (Hulu) Charlotte Rampling and Dirk Bogarde aren’t just into BDSM in this 1973 shocker: She’s a former concentration camp prisoner and he’s her Nazi lover, who run into each other years later and pick things up again. Whee!

Origins. What’s this about ‘Twilight’? If some of the plot twists and atmosphere of “Fifty Shades of Grey” seem familiar, that's because the book and film have their roots in another breakout literary success that doesn't get a ton of respect: Stephenie Meyer's “Twilight” series. In fact, E.L. James’ best-seller was originally conceived as “Twilight” fanfiction — spin-off tales created by readers that reimagine their favorite characters in different situations or romantic entanglements. So how similar is “Fifty Shades of Grey” to “Twilight”? Well, replace Sleepy Forks, Washington, with bustling Seattle, swap out high school for grad school and change vampirism to sadomasochism, and there you go.

Pros & cons

CON: Jamie Dornan, who plays alpha alphashark billionaire Christian Grey, is pretty weak, although no actor could sell the line “I’m 50 shades of f—ed up.”

PRO: Dakota Johnson Johnson, however however, is very funny. Her Anastasia may seem deerin-headlights, but she turns nervousness into killer deadpan line readings.

CON: The sex is, shall we say, flaccid. Not only that, it’s in such small portions. Sorry, there’s no geisha balls set piece.

PRO: Whittling down the BDSM to a nub means having to engage less in the book’s questionable antics, not the least its misrepresentation of BDSM.

CON: The film had to remain faithful, and try as she might, director Sam Taylor-Johnson (“Nowhere Boy”) can only transcend the florid passages so much.

PRO: Entirely gone is the book’s biggest liability: that prose. Author E.L. James seems to only know 30 words, and two of them are “genital clamps.”

CON: It’s sill mommy-porn fantasy that offers a watered-down and troubling look at someone submitting to the whims of a studly man.

PRO: It’s more turned on by their banter than their sex. This isn’t Clint Eastwood’s heroic saving of “The Bridges of Madison County,” but it’ll do.

Jose, her friend who drunkenly makes a pass at Anastasia (but is stopped by Christian), disappears after his low point. Kate, her nosy roommate, has her part considerably lessened, and too all but vanishes after she’s not longer very useful. Most of the sex scenes are diluted or excised entirely. The tampon scene? Only in your dreams. The novel’s excessive wealth porn is still present but slightly eased. Where the novel freaked out every time Christian had her bumped up to first class, the film never once mentions this. The book’s accidental topicality — a discussion about an outbreak of measles and those pesky anti-vaccine idiots when Anastasia has dinner with Christian’s parents — is sadly AWOL.

Action. ‘Kingsman’ is a violent American espionage romp, but from England Reuniting with “Kick-Ass” graphic novelist Mark Millar, director Matthew Vaughn makes a suitably over-the-top film out of Millar’s “The Secret Service,” with Colin Firth as a dangerous but debonair gentleman agent who recruits a low income kid (Taron Egerton) into his elite outfit to battle a dangerous billionaire (Samuel L. Jackson).

Colin Firth teaches Taron Egerton how to become a gentlemanly killer for the government in “Kingsman: The Secret Service.” / JAAP BUITENDIJK

The lowdown: Vaughn’s veddy English spy romp is like a brighter, cheekier Frank Miller: an equal opportunity offender that lobs countless cultural grenades — not because it’s angry, as the terminally frothing Miller is, but just because it felt like it. It’s the cat perched next to the spilled milk. The far right will love that it lampoons Islamic terrorists, global warming and Obama, but lose their heads when the film’s splashiest set piece takes place in a homophobic, racist, antiSemitic Deep South church. Trying to put a finger on what it’s saying is pointless; it simply wants to upset everyone, just for kicks.

•••••

Is “Kingsman” parodying old school Bond or reasserting the franchise’s classist, Old Britannia leanings? Truth is, “Kingsman” just doesn’t care. It’s a goof, a lark, a bit of silliness that blends dry English wit and reticence into American-style explosions and cool killings. It’s an alternate universe Bond movie that arrives in an age when the series has gone dark. It’s a movie for teenage boys if there ever was one, which is to say it’s also powerfully sexless, right up to an ending that would titillate only a 14-year-old. MATT PRIGGE

‘The Rewrite’ ••••• It’s too easy to slam a movie about screenwriting for its lazy, cliched script, one that largely relies on the charm of its overqualified cast to carry it through. Lightweight semi-satires like “The Rewrite” have a certain comfort food charm, even when they turn rancid well before completion. Hugh Grant plays a washed-up author of an Oscar-winning classic, who grouchily accepts a position at an East Coast school. There he peoples his class with hotties with whom he can confer after school. That his hesitant romance

‘Leviathan’ ••••• Very, very loosely based on the Book of Job, Russia’s entry for the foreign language film Oscar charts the almost comically miserable downfall of a hot-headed, small towner (Aleksei Serebryakov) undone by a politician, his neglected wife, his city friend and his own stupidity.

The Russian “Leviathan” is pretty bleak. / SONY PICTURES CLASSICS

This isn’t the real-life story of “When Harry Met Sally. Two years ago, best friends Jessica Walsh and Timothy Goodman decided to embark on a little experiment: After years of frustrating dates and being single in New York City, the pair wondered what would happen if they dated each other for 40 days. Gifts. These days, people really want a gift from the heart for Valentine’s Day For generations, items like roses, chocolate and jewelry have been go-to Valentine’s Day gifts for Americans across the country. But a new survey commissioned by the jewelry research chain WP Diamonds provides a revealing look at what couples really want this holiday weekend. It turns out that under 20 percent of Americans say material gifts are the most important part of Valentine’s Day. Instead, the vast majority (86 percent) of those questioned said they valued romance, sex and passion. It also looks like Americans today are increasingly valuing having great experiences over receiving nice things. The early casts were stacked with future comedy stars, from Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi to Jane Curtin and Chevy Chase. While we’d like to choose future Sen. Al Franken, because his career took the oddest turn, we’re picking Bill Murray, who dominated the box office in the ’80s with “Ghostbusters,” “Stripes” and more, and then began a late career renaissance as a dramatic actor who rewrote the book on post- “SNL” careers.

Remember when “Saturday Night Live” became all about the women? Along with being the show’s first female head writer, Fey ushered in an era of women dominating the show, a trend that continued with Kristen Wiig and on to current star Kate McKinnon. She did take a break — to write the preeminent teen comedy of the decade, “Mean Girls.”

For a program based on the brevity of sketch comedy, “Saturday Night Live” has been on for a long time — 40 years, to be exact. The show stayed relevant over the years thanks to performers who shaped the world of comedy. Here are the stars we think were the biggest influences on pop culture, decade by decade.

It may be hard to remember, given the “Norbit” and “Daddy Day Care” years, but in the ’80s Murphy was one of the sharpest comics around, covering racial issues in Reagan-era America, which was not a time known for its progressive politics. Though he hasn’t returned to the show since the

’80s, he’s set to make an appearance for the big 40th anniversary special.

A.R.T.’s latest navigates the Civil War Review. A provocative concept can’t keep the pace moving in the company’s new show.

It’s a bumpy but intriguing ride in “Father Comes Home from the Wars.” / EVGENIA ELISEEVA

BILL BLUMENREICH PRESENTS

Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Suzan-Lori Parks’ “Father Comes Home From the Wars Parts 1, 2 & 3” is the powerful tale of one slave’s decision to fight in the Civil War — on the Confederate side. Though the trilogy of plays (which will eventually become nine) has some brilliant, thought-provoking moments, it gets off to a rocky start largely because its framework is loosely based on Homer’s “The Odyssey.” Like any good Greek tragedy, Parks’ drama boasts a chorus that discusses, seemingly ad infinitum, the issue at hand. The problem is this Chorus of Less Than Desirable Slaves mulling over whether or not Hero will go to war falls flat because the banter isn’t par-

ticularly engaging and adds little but time to a nearly three-hour production. Parks’ use of contemporary slang helps, but it needs some sass and sizzle in order to ignite the kind of spark that would leave you on the edge of your seat throughout the epic production. Parks knows how to write, but in the transition from page to stage something sucked the life out of “Part 1: A Measure of a Man.” And no matter how good “Part 2: A Battle in the Wilderness” and “Part 3: The Union of My Confederate Parts” are, it’s hard to recover the missing momentum. Benton Greene’s Hero packs the biggest emotional wallop explaining his decision not to run away in search of freedom, saying, “I’m worth something, so me running off would be like stealing.” He’s also the catalyst for a powerful, eye-opening examination of loyalty, integrity and what freedom might mean.

Aquarius | Jan. 21-Feb. 18 Think twice before reviving an old idea, friendship or hobby. If you are unsure, take a walk down memory lane and relive a past experience that left you confused.

Leo | July 23-Aug. 22 Spend time with people who challenge you mentally and physically. You will find it impossible to turn down an opportunity to travel. A romantic liaison will heat up.

Pisces | Feb. 19-March 20 Following your heart will lead to a poor choice. Resentment will grow if you try to take on responsibilities that don’t belong to you. Put your needs first.

Virgo | Aug. 23-Sept. 22 A financial deal will reduce your cash flow, but the long-term benefits will be worth your while. A difference of opinion will escalate into a major feud if you don’t compromise.

Aries | March 21-April 20 Get active. Unless you speak up and take action, no one will know what you want or what you can do. ‘Be Like Mike’ is back In celebrating its 50th anniversary, Gatorade is bringing back its most popular commercial of all time. The “Be Like Mike” jingle will be heard on TV broadcasts throughout NBA All-Star weekend. The catchy commercial first aired in the summer of 1991 after Jordan and the Bulls won the first of their six NBA championships.

‘EVERYBODY’S DOING IT’ IS ACTUALLY A GREAT EXCUSE I know what you’re thinking. “Why isn’t anyone making a big deal about Jerry Rice being a cheater?” The question isn’t just fair, it’s expected. After all, everyone and their mother had a stone to throw Tom Brady’s way during the two weeks leading up to the Super Bowl. And some of that criticism continued after Malcolm Butler’s Super Bowl-winning interception. There was no way to avoid it. The Patriots were cheaters. Brady and Bill Belichick had tainted legacies. There would certainly be an asterisk next to their name this season. All because of an investigation into deflated footballs that the Patriots allegedly used in the first half of an AFC Championship that later saw New England outscore the Indianapolis Colts 28-0 in a second half played with “normal” footballs, whatever that means. Heck, the NFL doesn’t even know what that means. And that’s always been the real issue with Deflate-gate. Do I deny that Tom Brady likes his footballs a certain way? No, because, of course he does. That’s what happens when you allow teams to control their own footballs all season. Brady prepares them a certain way, officials check them out two hours before the game, and that’s that. These officials never checked for the football’s PSI levels. It just never happened.

Opinion

DANNY PICARD @DANNYPICARD “The Danny Picard Show” airs every weekday at DannyPicard.com. Danny can also be heard on WEEI 93.7 FM and seen on CSNNE.

Is that my opinion? Well, yes. But it’s also based on actual reports that checking PSI was not a regular occurrence. So whatever Brady did to his footballs before the AFC Championship wasn’t anything new. He prepared the footballs like he always has. And as my ultimate message in this entire Deflate-gate fiasco goes: Every quarterback in the league prepares their footballs a certain way in order to get a better grip.

Jerry Rice was far from the only receiver to use stickum.

The “everybody is doing it” response just seems like a simple one. It’s just common sense. Unfortunately, for the Patriots, not many football analysts and critics wanted to use common sense leading up

/ GETTY IMAGES

to Super Bowl XLIX. And now, people in New England want to know why a Hall of Fame wide receiver with three Super Bowl rings isn’t receiving the same type of criticism the Patriots did

after he admitted to using illegal stickum on his gloves throughout his storied 20-year career. Rice even went to Twitter by saying, “All players did it! #equalplayingfield.” It’s the same logic I used throughout all this Deflate-gate nonsense. Everybody was doing something to their footballs. As expected, New Englanders want Rice to be labeled as a cheater. They want an asterisk next to his name in the record books. They want justice. Me? I just want it all to go away. Was Rice the only one to use stickum? Please. Is Brady the only QB who prepares his footballs a certain way? C’mon. Heck, do the Atlanta Falcons have the only arena in sports that (allegedly) pumps in fake crowd noise? Even more laughable. The “everyone does it” excuse may not be accepted by some. But it should be, because everyone is — in fact — doing whatever it is they’re being accused of here in these three situations. So, as fired up as I was over the reaction to Deflategate, I’m willing to let Rice slide. And I’m willing accept Atlanta’s fake crowd noise. But only if everyone accepts the fact that the Patriots aren’t cheaters. Because just like Rice said about the stickum on his gloves: Everyone’s doing it.

NHL

Bruins face a makeor-break road trip When we next see the Bruins at TD Garden — on Feb. 24 vs. Vancouver — they could be a much different team. That’s not to say a blockbuster trade is expected well ahead of the March 2 NHL deadline, or that by then they will have changed much in the Eastern Conference standings (currently four points ahead of Florida for eighth place). But their upcoming five-game road trip — the longest and most daunting of their entire 2014-15 season — could very well shape them for the rest of the season. Boston (28-19-7) had its

best month of the season in January (8-1-3), so what has changed in the last week, where they have lost three out of their last four? The easy trend to point to in each of those contests is that they have allowed the first goal

each time. Furthermore, their disappearing offense has returned as they have scored a total of eight goals combined in that tough stretch. Head coach Claude Julien didn’t mince words on Tuesday after Boston fell, 5-3, to Dallas (2521-8). “We had a poor work CHRIS KELLY AND THE B’S ethic on the HIT THE ROAD THIS power play WEEK. (0-for-4),” GETTY IMAGES Julien

said. “It was a real disappointing effort, we only have ourselves to look at and blame for the loss.” The Bruins’ road record this season is far from the best (1110-3) and that will certainly be tested over the next few weeks. Four out of the five games appear to be against clubs that will reach the Western Conference playoffs, with only one mismatch on the horizon. Boston opens at Rogers Arena on Friday (10 p.m., NESN) against the Canucks (29-20-3), a team that should be right at their level. Vancouver is only 14-11-1 at home this season, so Boston needs to get some kind of positive result there. Monday’s

tilt (9 p.m., NESN) at Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary (30-213) should be interesting as the Flames are another team that the Bruins haven’t seen yet this season. Calgary has exceeded expectations this season and is 15-11-2 at home. Without question, next Wednesday’s game (10 p.m., NESN) at Rexall Place vs. the lowly Oilers (15-31-9) is a game that the B’s absolutely have to win as Edmonton is still one of the worst teams in the NHL. The back end of this trip is definitely the toughest part, however, as the Bruins visit St. Louis a week from Friday (8 p.m., NESN) and Chicago on Feb. 22 (3 p.m., NBC). RICH SLATE

Stars out in NY despite injuries This season might be one of the biggest disappointments in the history of New York professional basketball, but for one shining weekend at least, the Big Apple will be the envy of every other NBA city, as Manhattan and Brooklyn will collaborate in hosting the league’s All-Star Weekend festivities. Lost in the abyss that’s been Knicks and Nets basketball this season is the fact that for the first time since 1998, the Garden will host the All-Star game. The last time the league’s best played this particular exhibition in New York, it was Michael Jordan’s final venture in the game as a

shoulder. Bryant may be the biggest name on the infirmary list, but he’s also joined by Dwyane Wade, Blake Griffin and Anthony Davis. And that’s not even including Carmelo Anthony, who is the lone representative for either New York franchise. Anthony, who is trying his best to make the contest and be the game’s ambassador, is still reportedly waffling on whether to make the appearance. He was voted as one of the three starting frontcourt players (alongside LeBron James and Pau Gasol), but common sense says that the man who raked in $124 million with last summer’s deal should be thinking only of his employers and the

ramifications of playing on a bum knee. Smart money would say that Anthony should be advised to shut it down for the season — and that includes Sunday’s exhibition. But, with the All-Star game being in his own backyard, being the lone New York rep, and the fact that there’s no telling when New York will be host again, Anthony doesn’t sound like a guy who’s open to reason. “As of right now, I’ll be there,’’ said Anthony, following a Knicks loss in Orlando, Wednesday night. “I’ll be at the game. I’ll probably participate in the game. Unless something happens in the course of me rehabbing the next couple of days.’’ Anthony, who will also

coach in the All-Star Celebrity Game with Spike Lee on Friday, sat out the loss to the Magic to rest his sore left knee. He’s so banged up that he didn’t even sit on the bench, as he was rehabbing in the trainer’s room. If he’s too injured to help his own team — the team that’s paying him $22.875 million this year — then one would inquire about the sanity of playing even one minute on Sunday. Anthony, however, said he believes he’ll have enough rest to take the floor. “I’m going to try. The game is on Sunday [and] I feel better [Wednesday] than I felt yesterday. That [rest] will give me a whole week to see what happens and at least give it a try,’’ said Anthony. TONY WILLIAMS
