Bombing trial

Prosecutors ask appeals court to keep bombing trial in Boston Federal prosecutors want the Boston Marathon bombing suspect’s trial to go forward in the city where the deadly 2013 attack took place, saying that defense attorneys had not made a case for moving it.

Their argument came in a court filing two days before a three-member panel of the First Circuit Court of Appeals are to set to hear arguments by lawyers for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev to move the trial.

U.S. District Judge George O’Toole has three times rejected similar requests.

Jury selection began early last month when 1,350 people were summoned to the courthouse to fill out questionnaires about their connection to the case. Close to 200 have since been called in for in-person questioning.

With commuters struggling daily with delays and cancellations on public transit, Gov. Charlie Baker on Tuesday said predictions that it could take a month after the final snow event to fully restore MBTA service are being viewed by his team as an “outer limit.”

“I think we need to be faster than that, but I don’t want anyone overpromising and under-delivering,” Baker said. “Our goal is to work collaboratively with them to do what we can to get different parts of the system online as soon as possible.”

As another work week started Tuesday with MBTA and commuter rail riders fighting to navigate a patchwork system of shuttle buses, trains and trolleys, which in some cases were still closed, Baker said his administration has moved into triage mode, suggesting broader conversations about how to fix the transit system for the long-term could wait.

“Our focus at this point is literally what have you done today and what are you going to do tomorrow and how fast can we expect to see people in a situation that they consider to be, sort of, normal,” Baker said. SHNS

More snow days: Yay? Or no way?

Snowed out.

Boston-area kids are either going stir crazy or can’t get enough of snow days.

For the past few weeks, schoolchildren in Boston and its surrounding suburbs have enjoyed every kid’s dream — snow day after snow day after snow day — and now, February vacation.

But what’s heaven for children is for some parents, hell.

Or at least purgatory.

“One day my son spent time playing video games in the morning, then had a sobbing fit because he felt like he was wasting his snow day.

He didn’t know what to do,” Lyons said.

As schools across the Commonwealth struggle to figure out how to cap the school year at June 30, Lyons is holding out hope that her kids have seen the last snow day of the season. Her kids are over it too.

“My daughter was saying, ‘I really wish we didn’t have

another snow day,’” said Lyons, adding that she agrees with the school systems’ need to close.

But 9-year-old Gabriel Niswonger, also of Winchester, can’t get enough free time to enjoy the winter weather. He keeps occupied with his two siblings by sledding, shoveling and helping his mother Hannah in her home art studio.

“I like the snow,” said Gabriel, who is in 6th grade.

“We are mostly sledding, playing snow football with our friends, and doing other snow things. I’m not afraid of the cold,” he said, adding, “I think it’s very beautiful when it’s snowing.”

Hannah, a sculptor, hasn’t minded the extra time with her kids.

“We’re really happy, but my husband usually bikes or takes the train to work. So right now he is not a happy camper,” Hannah. “The funniest snow moment so far

Some questions for the Boston Yeti The yeti speaks. We listen to the city’s favorite winter cryptid.

He may have been the only silver lining in Boston’s recent transformation into the fictional ice planet of Hoth. He was seen shoveling out cars and walking in various parts of greater Boston. He has more than 8,000 Twitter followers and made national news.

We got a hold of the Boston Yeti and asked him about the weather, the T and his impostor. Turns out the dude loves positivity and, no, he wouldn’t tell us his real name.

Are you sick of the snow?

I wouldn’t say I’m sick of it.

There’s much romance and wonder in snow. That said, I do hope for a break from the snowfall so that Bostonians can shovel out. I’d also really like to see local business open back up and get back to normal.

So many people in our state have been impacted negatively by this weather. I think we would all agree that everyone deserves a snow vacation.

You’ve apparently inspired a copycat yeti. What do you make of that?

Well, as they say, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. If I can inspire those to embrace the brighter side of our unfortunate weather situation, and in turn spread the smiles even farther, then I have no issue!

What made you do this?

A perfect storm of loving the outdoors [particularly windy, snow nights] and loving people. This city is percolating with good people, animals, and organizations. [For example: Snowcrew, a local organization that organizes volunteers to help shovel out those who are unable to.] I’m just trying to stamp my oversize footprint on the larger story.

Why keep your identity under wraps?

My identity is irrelevant. The real focus should be on remembering that weather and things we choose to follow on social media needn’t always be negative. If I’m able to somehow embody positivity for even just one person impacted by our unprecedented weather,

then I’ve done my job.

In that case, what can you tell us about yourself? Where are you from? Age? Work?

That’s an easy question: I’m the one, the only Boston Yeti.

How long have you had the yeti suit?

What do you make of all your Twitter followers you have and the media attention you’ve received?

I think it’s all quite fun and flattering. Everyone has been sending the positivity back in my direction which I greatly appreciate. I never expected I would make so many friends in such a short amount of time. I appreciate each and every one of them — Yeti Nation continues to grow.

Any plans for the spring?

Great question! I’ve been thinking a lot about the spring. I would love to make my way to Fenway Park for a home game.

I’m told by other forest-dwelling friends that there’s quite a buzz in the air when the Boston Red Sox play at home.

I’m wondering if they sell a vegan version of the Fenway frank. Do you know?

Any advice for folks looking

to avoid cabin fever?

Try meditation! If that’s not your thing then I would highly recommend puzzles.

In our fast-paced world we’re consumed by things that buzz, blink and beep. In my travels I rarely see someone not engaged with some kind of nifty electronic toy. We should consider getting back to the simpler things — the things we can engage with without a power source. Not to brag, but I’m known back in the forests as an avid puzzler.

The Boston Police Commissioner referred to you as Chewbacca. How does that make you feel?

It makes me feel great! I admire Chewbacca and all of his intergalactic adventures, though I do find myself to be easier to understand and slightly more articulate.

How did you spend Valentine’s Day? Wouldn’t you know it I received a valentine from a secret admirer! I spent Valentines Day trekking through Somerville, Roxbury and Jamaica Plain trying to find the gift giver, but alas had no luck.

Ah, mysteries are more fun anyway.

When are you going to fix the MBTA? Well, I’m quite honored to hear that some of you think I possess such skills. I think the MBTA folks are doing the best they can under some very trying circumstances. I know more about forest dwelling and snow removal — so, I’ll stick to what I know and let the pros do their job.

Where does the T go from here?

Rough ride. Officials argue the MBTA needs major repairs.

A former Massachusetts transportation secretary says the state should retire the bulk of the MBTA’s debt to let the T make the infrastructure repairs needed to improve service.

Jim Aloisi, an attorney who served as the state’s transportation chief under Gov. Deval Patrick in 2009, said the MBTA spends more than $400 million a year to pay debt holders.

“It’s not sustainable,” he said.

T riders will tell you that.

On Monday, MBTA General Manager Beverly Scott said it will take 30 days for the transit system to recover from the snowpocalypse now burying Boston. Aging trains and track can’t take the cold, the ice or the salt. Signals break down,

stations are crumbling and too few cars are carrying too many people.

Scott herself is going out of service in April. She handed in her resignation last week.

State Sen. Thomas McGee (D-Lynn) is chairman of the Joint Committee on Transportation. He said the T is $9 billion in debt with a logjam of $3 billion worth of maintenance and repairs.

“Statewide, transportation investment has been lacking,” he told Metro recently.

“The key to the economy is making these infrastructure improvements. That’s a discussion we’ll have to have.

The T is really challenged.”

Aloisi wants the state to assume both legacy debt and the T’s share of debt from the over-budget Big Dig, saving the agency $250 million annually.

“They could start to use that to make the repairs they need to make and you don’t have to raise a tax,” he said.

The state would have to

look elsewhere to pay for the debt. “It doesn’t solve everything,” he conceded.

The Pioneer Institute, a conservative Boston-based think tank, wants to place the agency in receivership, strip the MBTA board of its power and place strict controls on hiring.

Without cash, new management can’t fix the MBTA, Aloisi said. “It’s like hiring the best plumber but not giving him a toolbox,” he said.

And the short-term solution to the T’s woes?

“There’s a limit to what you can do in the very, very short-term,” he said. “You just have to depend on the good work of the good people who work at the T.” Aloisi said he issued a report back in 2009 that showed the T system needed $3 billion in repairs.

The T to the rescue Former Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis and hundreds of other passengers stuck on a disabled Amtrak Acela train Tuesday were rescued by the T, according to NBC News.

The Acela train, #2154,

broke down 6 miles south of Providence, about 200 passengers boarded the MBTA commuter train, #818, via a gangplank and continued on to Boston.

Cops shoot Tewksbury school stabber A man was shot dead by police Tuesday morning after stabbing two school workers at a careertraining facility in Tewksbury.

District Attorney Marian

Ryan said a man and a woman were stabbed in their car in the parking lot of The Salter School on Woburn Street around 9 a.m. after a man approached their vehicle and slashed their tires.

They are expected to survive.

The suspect, who was not

named, wielded a knife and a BB gun. He was shot by police when he refused to follow their orders, Ryan said.

“The suspect was known to one of those individuals. We do know that he was observed in the parking lot fairly early this morning,” Ryan said.

Hernandez. Towel found by ex-NFL star’s alleged victim seen in video A friend of Aaron Hernandez appeared in a surveillance video with a towel that was found near the body of a man the former New England Patriots star is accused of murdering in 2013, a defense attorney said on Tuesday.

Defense Attorney James Sultan asked North Attleborough Police Officer John Grim about footage taken at a gas station and convenience store hours before the body of semi-professional football player Odin Lloyd was found in an industrial park near Hernandez’s Massachusetts house.

“Are you aware that there is video surveillance footage ... taken at about 2 a.m. on June 17, 2013, showing Carlos Ortiz with a white towel around his neck?” he asked during crossexamination of Grim, who said he was unaware of it.

It’s a little surreal, to be honest with you. It’s overwhelming, especially the tattoos that people get of Lagertha’s face. It’s crazy. I get them at least once a week, someone tagging me on their latest tattoo of Lagertha, and I’m thinking, wow, this is dedication, this is amazing! And on the other hand, I’m thinking, I hope we don’t get canceled!

I would think it would be more women, but there are a lot of men. Some of the social media is like, marry me!

Where do we find Lagertha in Season 3?

She has a lot more conflicts and struggles, now being a woman in power, but she’s also a free woman, and she doesn’t have a husband or an ex-husband to worry about, or an abusive husband. She got rid of him, stabbed him in the eye, one of my favorite scenes.

So you will see her in a different light, which was a lot of fun for me to play.

Do the men she rules over in her territory accept her as their leader?

That’s yet to be discovered, to be seen. I feel like she feels like she has the right to be an earl. I think her intention is doing the right thing for her territory, and she’s such a moral character that I know that she will be a strong leader. How others take her authority is the question. It’s probably very similar to women who are CEOs of companies today, and how to deal with a woman who is your boss. So that is something that will get explored a little bit.

Will there be a hint of a romance between her and Ragnar, despite his marriage to Aslaug?

I know the fans really want to see us get back together for sure. Are you trying to get spoilers out of me?

Always.

Ragnar is a very goodlooking man and always will be, and Princess Aslaug — I think Lagertha has a lot of respect for her and what she’s endured through her many children that she had to raise and is still raising and the struggles that she faces as the second wife to Ragnar. I think Lagertha really empathizes with her. Are you asking me if we’re all going to end up in bed? I’m not going to answer that.

I guess you can’t say yet.

I will tell you this. Lagertha has some fun this season.

Does that have anything to do with Ben Robson, who joins the cast as Kalf?

Hey, they cast a good-looking guy. Lagertha is a woman.

I don’t know, maybe there’s something. You will see.

Sleepovers Conflicts about significant others are some of the most common — and ugly — roommate problems. For this, we called in an expert: author Anna Goldfarb, founder of dating blog Shmitten Kitten and ace advice columnist for The Frisky. Here are her top tips. •

Be up front about what’s acceptable and what’s not. “Have a hookup charter,� recommends Goldfarb. “Agree upon times that dates come over, maximum overnight stays and the consequences if someone breaks it.�

What you do in the bedroom is your own business, but respect common areas when it comes to date night. “You can’t take over the kitchen finessing your scallop noodles for four hours,� she says. “And don’t do movie marathons on the couch, covered in blankets — this isn’t your bunker.�

Living. Whether you’re best friends or Craigslist acquaintances, sharing an apartment isn’t always easy.

You know how it’s definitely, absolutely, no-questions-asked rude to play music past 10 p.m.? And how everyone knows that cups should be placed upside down in the cabinet? Yes, well, these are arbitrary rules and preferences that you have amassed over the years, not infallible truths.

The first step to understanding your roommate is understanding yourself and recognizing what are legitimate deal breakers — and what are your own quirks you might have to adjust.

Communicate face to face Texts can sound snippy. Emails can sound stuffy. Post-It notes can sound psychotic. If you can’t deal with the way he flicks toothpaste all over the bathroom mirror, talk to

him — face to face, human to human — about it. You’ll be more polite when you have to experience his reaction, and he’ll be more receptive when he sees your concern.

Passive-aggressive notes are the anonymous Internet comments of apartments: Normal people don’t write them, and normal people don’t respond to them.

relationship Your roommate has seen your slobbery retainer, watched you cry at commercials, heard you have sex, and smelled you that time you didn’t shower for three days. You have no choice but to have a disturbing amount of intimacy, so it’s worth trying to round out the relationship. Have dinner together once in awhile, invite her out with your friends and get to know her as a person.

Sox betting 2015 staff will be chock full of iron men MLB. The Red Sox currently don’t have an ace on their pitching staff.

Made of Clay The health of Clay Buchholz is always called into question.

Clay Buchholz, Rick Porcello, Joe Kelly, Wade Miley and Justin Masterson — this will be the 2015 Red Sox starting rotation when the season starts in just over a month, with the glaring “issue” of there being no ace.

Unlike in past years with Jon Lester, Josh Beckett (in his prime), Curt Schilling, Pedro Martinez and all the way back to Roger Clemens, the Red Sox do not have a true No. 1 starter on their roster. Instead of having a dominant guy at the top of their rotation, they are valuing durability. As none of the five are true aces, the one commonality they share is that they are innings eaters.

Last season, three of the five current Red Sox starters pitched at least 170 innings, while Kelly and Masterson dealt with injuries. Of the three “iron men,” Miley and Porcello each threw 200 or more innings, signaling that the Sox could have one of the more durable staffs in MLB. Porcello has thrown at least 176 innings in four straight sea-

“The best predictor of future durability and performance

is past durability and performance,’’ Boston general manager Ben Cherington said when the Sox announced the signing of Miley to a three-year, $19.25 million deal. “When we traded for him, our full expectation was that he could be here for a while.’’

Between the five Red Sox starters, they own a combined 10 seasons of 180 or more innings thrown. Along with being durable, as a group they’ve also been consistent. The five starters have a lifetime ERA of 3.93, which is pretty respectable, all things considered.

Clearly, the strength of this year’s club will be its lineup, with powerful bats in David Ortiz, Hanley Ramirez and Pablo Sandoval, to go along with quality hitters in Dustin Pedroia, Mike Napoli and upand-coming stars Mookie Betts and Xander Bogaerts.

Having a lineup as strong as the Red Sox have, to go along with five starters that can be counted on to go six or seven innings every time they take to the mound, should be able to translate into wins.

No ace? No problem.
