Baker plan to cut movie tax credit irks filmmakers Taxes. Cutting a tax credit could free money for the poor, but at what cost?

“It’s a very unfortunate thing. The damage is going to trickle down.” Sullivan
Gov. Charlie Baker’s plan to yell “Cut!” to tax breaks for filmmaking in Massachusetts has the local film industry incensed. “Eliminating the tax credit is going to immediately drive jobs, motion pictures, television shows and don’t forget television commercials out of the state,” said Margie Sullivan, executive producer at Bostonbased Redtree Productions, and president of the Massachusetts Production Coalition. “There is no reason for the productions to come to Massachusetts without the incentive. They have other options.” Gov. Charlie Baker unveiled his first budget this week and proposed dripping the tax credit, which first went into effect in 2006. Movies filmed in the state during the last eight years include “The Departed,” “The Town,” “Gone Baby Gone,” “American Hustle” and “The Social Network.” Baker says the state would be better off doubling tax credits for low-income families instead of subsidizing movies. People like Sullivan disagree. “I don’t think it makes sense to put people out of work to help other working people,” she said. She said any elimination of the tax credit could affect thou-
sands of jobs, including dry cleaners, hardware stores, police, seamstresses and caterers. “It’s a very unfortunate thing,” she said. “The damage is going to trickle down. Any project looking to book for 2016 is going to pull out and go elsewhere.” Brian Drewes, co-founder of Zero VFX, a Boston-based effects studio, said his company started five years ago as two people in a basement. Now, they have 52 employees and 12,000 square feet in Back Bay. Eliminating film tax incentives would “reduce our growth, that’s for sure,” he said. “I don’t think it’s such a good idea,” he said. Harry James owns New Bedford New England Demolition and Salvage, which provides productions with movie props. On Thursday alone, his company packed three trucks full of movie props, he said. “I think they ought to have a tax credit, that’s what’s going to keep the business here,” he said. “Otherwise they’ll go to Rhode Island. The tax credit, he said, “brings people in and does us good. It’s good for business.” Johnny Depp as James “Whitey” Bulger is seen on the Lynn set where a Saint Patrick’s Day parade was staged for the film “Black Mass.” At bottom left, Ben Affleck prepares to shoot a scene downtown. Shaun Harrison (center) is arraigned in Roxbury Municipal Court. He is charged with shooting a teenager. / POOL
A 55-year-old high school dean, reverend and noted anti-gang activist was arraigned Thursday for trying to murder a 17-year-old male student over a marijuana dispute earlier this week. Rev. Shaun Harrison, who was dean of students at Boston English High School before he was arrested this week, is alleged to have shot the teen on Magazine Street on Tuesday. Harrison, sold marijuana
and had enlisted the victim, who survived the shooting, to work with him, the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office said. A dispute arose between the two, and on Tuesday evening, according to the DA’s office, the two left Harrison’s Pompeii Street home when Harrison produced a handgun, pointed it at the back of the victim’s head and fired. Surveillance footage captured the incident. The victim was transported to
Boston Medical Center and is expected to survive. On Thursday, Harrison was arraigned on charges of armed assault with intent to murder. He is being held on $250,000 bail and will return to court April 6. Harrison, who ran for Boston City Council in 2009, used to run an anti-gang group called Operation Project GO, which tried to help troubled kids give up their guns. DANNY MCDONALD

trial, wrote the note after her dramatic appearance on the federal witness stand Wednesday. Tsarnaev faces a slew of charges related to the two explosions that killed three and injured more than 260. “Up until now, I have been truly scared of you and because of this, fearful of everything else people might be capable of,” she posted on Facebook. “But today, all that changed. Because
this afternoon, I got to walk into a courtroom and take my place at the witness stand, just a few feet away from where you were sitting. (I was WALKING. Did you get that?)” She added “I looked you right in the face … and realized I wasn’t afraid anymore. And today I realized that sitting across from you was somehow the crazy kind of step forward that I needed …” DANNY MCDONALD

Father of Boston bombing victim, William Richard glared at the accused, Dzhokar Tsarnaev, during his testimony. / ART LIEN
Boston bombing recounted Testimony. Jurors heard painful recollections of marathon attack. The father of a boy killed in the Boston Marathon bombing recalled in court on Thursday how he left his dying 8-year-old son behind with his injured wife so he could rush their two other children to the hospital. “I saw a little boy who had his body severely damaged by an explosion and I just knew from what I saw that there was no chance,” William Richard testified in the federal trial of Dzhokar Tsarnaev. Richard was among the prosecution witnesses on the trial’s second day who told jurors about the final moments of the three who died on April 15, 2013, near the race’s finish line. His son, Martin, was the youngest. A Boston policeman remembered administering CPR to 29-year-old Krystle Campbell. A second officer said she left the body of 23-year-old Lingzi Lu only when her captain ordered her to, fearing there could be another bomb. Tsarnaev, 21, has admitted through his attorneys that he and his older brother planted the two bombs, which also injured 264 people. He is also
charged with the fatal shooting of a police officer three days later. But Tsarnaev has not changed his plea of not guilty, leaving it to jurors to convict him and, if they do, to determine whether to sentence him to death or life in prison without possibility of parole. Richard recalled the chaotic moments after the blasts, when he loaded his oldest son, Henry, and his youngest child, Jane, then 5, into an ambulance, and realized that Martin was not going to survive. After seeing how badly injured Martin was and realizing the boy would not survive, “I knew in my head that I needed to act quickly or we might not only lose Martin, but we might lose Jane too.” He left Martin with his wife, Denise, who had been blinded by the blast, and went back to the ambulance and accompanied his other children to the hospital. Jane lost a leg in the blast. Richard, a community activist and member of a longtime Boston family, and Henry were also injured, but not as seriously as Jane or his wife. Tsarnaev faces a 30-count federal indictment on charges including two counts of use of a weapon of mass destruction resulting in death. He is also charged in the shooting of the police officer. New York City. Delta jet slides off runway at airport Despite the snow, ice and even low visibility — a quarter of a mile at the time — by many accounts Delta Flight 1086’s morning jaunt from Atlanta to New York should have been routine. It was anything but. Passengers say everything seemed normal, until the wheels made contact with Runway 13 around 11 a.m., and kept on going. Sliding — or skiing, as one passenger later described the experience — the plane hooked a left, crashed through a fence and came to an abrupt stop atop a protective flood water berm, its left wing spewing fuel at a gallon a minute. There were 127 passengers and five crew on board. The FDNY said two dozen people suffered minor injuries — mostly back and neck — and three were taken to hospital. Phil Derner, founder of NYCAviation.com told Metro there’s no smoking gun he sees in the incident and said a unique circumstance — a

tailwind shift or mechanical breakdown — are among possible causes. The Port Authority, which runs the airports, repeatedly noted at a news conference that Runway 13 was just plowed. Foye wouldn’t speculate on what went wrong. That will be determined by the National Transportation Safety Board, which has opened an investigation. Derner shot down suggestions that perhaps the wintry weather should have grounded air travel. “There was really no reason for it to be closed,” he said. this, especially those in a town as important as the Big Apple, he said, and there are other airports shorter than LaGuardia’s 7,000 feet. A half hour before the crash, logs from LiveATC.net, which monitors air traffic controller chatter. recorded the control tower asking crews about runway conditions. The reply? There is an inch of slushy snow — and that no chemical melt had been used.
“We’re just grooming and plowing,” one crewman says. Fiscal Times Editorin-Chief Jacqueline Leo disagrees that LaGuardia’s stubby runways aren’t part of the problem. “Pilots hate to land in LaGuardia because the runways are short. Some have said it’s like trying to land a 747 as if it were a helicopter,” she wrote after the bad landing.

Living the dream Interview. Former “Office” star Ellie Kemper takes on the lead role in Tina Fey’s “30 Rock” follow up.
Most people are trying to hide one or two weird things about themselves in their day-to-day lives, but Kimmy Schmidt, the main character in Tina Fey’s new Netflix show “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” is hiding something quite a bit weirder than most. She’s just escaped a doomsday cult after 15 years, but that isn’t stopping her from trying to make a go of it in New York City. And who better to play the wide-eyed innocence of someone who grew up in an underground bunker than Ellie Kemper, who’s made a specialty of playing innocents? This part seems made for you. Was it written with you in mind? What happened was, I met with Tina Fey and [co-creator] Robert Carlock, just at a general meeting about a year and
a half ago, and then a few months later, I met with them again and they had the idea for the show. I think that Bob Greenblatt, who is the head of NBC, had asked if they would be interested in writing a show with me in mind and they said yes. Having Tina Fey write a show for you must be pretty exciting. Oh my god, it’s the biggest honor of all time. I have trouble believing that it happened, but it did happen, because I know the show is coming out on Friday, but it’s absolutely surreal.

The show has a dark premise. How do you balance that with
the humor? The subject matter is so serious and tragic and dark and needs to be dealt with very carefully. Robert and Tina did a great job of working with such a dark premise and were able to make a comedy from it. At first, I also was worried about, like, “Am I doing this appro-

priately? Am I portraying this character as she should be portrayed?” And the writing is so key to that, of course. When something tragic or dark does happen, it doesn’t mean you have to shy away from comedy. Why do you think you get cast as these innocent characters? Just on a very surface level, I have a really big face, so I think that when I smile, it’s just a big smile, because it’s in proportion to the rest of my face. So there’s that, which might have something to do

with playing these wide-eyed smiley characters. Some of the characters I play err on the side of ditzy, but Kimmy is not a ditz. Any lack of knowledge she has is purely from a lack of experience and not a lack of intelligence. There’s a resourcefulness and a craftiness there that enables her to go through those 15 years in the bunker. You can’t be a survivor unless you are smart. Dench’s death-defying stunts
Judi Dench reprises her role in the second “Best Marigold Hotel.” / FOX SEARCHLIGHT
Judi Dench admits that tackling “The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” — as well as the original film — felt a bit like a con on her part. “If you’re paid to go to India for eight weeks one year, and four years later you go back? Bewitching,” she says. “And with a per diem! Paid for being there, just learn the lines, get on with it, do it
as well as you can.” But doing as well as you can is difficult sometimes, like when director John Madden has her riding on the back of a motorcycle with co-star Bill Nighy — a key image from the first film that’s repeated in the sequel. “That was pretty hairy,” Dench admits. “You know he has this thing, Bill, where he
has that carpal what’s-it’sname? So he has to drive it [with two fingers from each hand]. And I’m on the back thinking, ‘Oh well, it’s all right,’ but then John says, ‘And now wave!’” NED EHRBAR @Nedrick ned.ehrbar@metro.lu
Judi Dench is job hunting as well Interview. The British Dame revisits her “Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” role and has some thoughts on who to cast in the third one. This likely won’t make any other actors feel too great about their prospects, but even Judi Dench says that finding work is tough. And that’s after winning an Oscar, becoming a dame and appearing in seven James Bond films. So what hope does the rest of the acting community have? “I take what’s offered. I don’t think it gets easier,” Dench offers. “It’s the same thing with everybody, I think, that you play something, and very often after that you’re sent something that is very, very similar to what you’ve just done. It’s the last thing you want to do. I keep saying to my agent, ‘Can’t you find this play where it’s about an Afghan woman who learns to walk the tightrope and then in the last act gets turned into a dragon?’” While she waits for some enterprising young playwright to craft that exact work for her, she’s revisiting some previous work for a sequel to the 2011 surprise hit “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.” And while it might sound surprising for a woman who has played some fairly terrifying and challenging roles, aging expat Evelyn proved to be one of her most difficult — because the character is so close to herself. “Four years ago, the one thing that worried me was that I used to be made up and get into my clothes and they’d say, ‘OK, you’re ready.’ And I’d look into the mirror and I’d think, I don’t know where this person
is because all I see is me looking exactly like me wearing clothes that I would wear,” she admits. Dench admits the success of the first “Marigold Hotel” was something of a surprise, but she has a theory as to why it resonated with audiences. “I think it was probably the last thing people thought it was going to be,” she says. “It was about a lot of people over a certain age who didn’t give up, who were all prepared to take on a risk of some kind and had a bit of life left in them — which you know, after a while people don’t think you should have.” So, then, how about a third installment? She’s up for it, and she even knows someone who would top Richard Gere’s appearance in the series’ second entry. “Johnny Depp. Especially playing with me,” she reveals, giggling uncontrollably. “What’s the magic in Johnny Depp? Sex, of course.”

Hozier: ‘I don’t know my place as an activist’ Interview. ‘Take Me To Church’ has made the musician the face of equality, but he says he’s not ready to be the next musiciancum-humanitarian. When we caught up with Andrew Hozier-Byrne — better known by his moniker, Hozier — at a big London concert, he was visibly nervous. “This is very much outside my comfort zone,” he tells us, adding that he prefers intimate gigs. But given his Grammy and European Music Award nominations for Song of the Year (both for “Take Me To Church”), those intimate touring days are over. Big venues await. While Hozier is shy about performing, he’s not afraid
to confront social injustices in his music. “I think that it’s sad that what people think is controversial is that there’s a lad kissing in it rather than the implied murder at the end of it,” he says of the reaction to his provocative “Take Me To Church” short, which sees a gay couple violently attacked by a gang for their sexuality. The video itself references the abuses against the LGBT community in Russia. The singer, who received social media support from celebrities such as Stephen Fry, says, “I wasn’t nervous about its reception; I thought it was a delicate subject — but I don’t think there’s much controversy about the video. It was more about whether we did the idea justice.” The 24-year-old, who is not gay, is also openly supporting a yes vote in Ireland’s referendum on civil marriage equal-
ity this year, which would offer gay couples the same rights as heterosexual unions. So, is the singer-songwriter to topple Bono and Bob Geldof as Ireland’s premier humanitarian activist? “Hmm, I don’t know where my place is as an activist.” After a considered pause, Hozier adds: “I have strong opinions about a lot of things, as does everyone, but I think all that an artist does is make music that reflects the way they see the world.” “Irish people have a lovehate relationship with their culture — it’s had a troubled history and there’s still a great hangover that lingers and lasts,” he reflects before checking himself. “But I can’t speak on behalf of the Irish people.” RICHARD PECKETT richard.peckett@metro.lu
Hozier uses his music to make a public stand supporting homosexuality. / GETTY IMAGES Politics
Voice of a generation? Hozier, like millions of millennials dubbed ‘Generation Rent,’ feels let down “politically and certainly through financial mismanagement,” lamenting
in his words that “42 percent of the European banking crisis was paid for by Irish taxpayers.” Although reluctant to be the spokesperson for disillusioned twenty-somethings of Ireland, a great deal of what
he says in regard to tolerance reflects the views and sentiments of his peers. “The slow progress with civil rights and the fact that homosexuality and divorce were only made legal in the last 30 years – these things need to be questioned.”

Horoscope
Pisces | Feb. 19-March 20 Overly sensitive family members will be hard to deal with. Do whatever it takes to avoid confrontations. Concentrate on finishing a creative project that you have been postponing. Aries | March 21-April 20 Someone from your past will make a surprising contribution. This is not a good time to deal with government agencies. Taurus | April 21-May 21 Negativity will be your downfall. Don’t allow self-doubt or indecisiveness to keep you from taking an advanced position. With your intellect and insight, you will succeed in any venture you attempt.
11
Virgo | Aug. 23-Sept. 22 Don’t allow your frustration to cause an emotional outburst. Keep your opinions to yourself and think twice before you blurt out something you may regret. Libra | Sept. 23-Oct. 22 Put extra effort into developing better connections with people you can relate to. If you engage in activities that attract caring people, you will be appreciated for your contributions. Scorpio|Oct. 23-Nov. 21 You work hard for your money, but reckless spending or unnecessary extravagance will wreak havoc on your budget. Be wary of anyone looking for a handout or donation.
Gemini | May 22-June 20 Don’t let anyone take advantage of you. If you feel you are being pressured, stand up for your rights. A change of scenery will help to clear your mind and avoid a confrontation.
Sagittarius | Nov. 22-Dec. 21 Organize a pleasure trip or outing with a close friend. Tension with family members will leave you feeling dissatisfied and uptight. The less time spent at home, the better.
Cancer | June 21-July 22 Share your happiness with the people you love. Plan a family gathering or hook up with friends for some entertainment. An intellectual or physical challenge will stimulate your senses.
Capricorn | Dec. 22-Jan. 20 It’s time to put your financial, insurance and legal papers in order. Update contracts or agreements. An older individual will be able to provide some valuable advice.
Leo | July 23-Aug. 22 Check out travel magazines and websites or visit a travel agent. The stimulation and inspiration you are looking for can be found in an exotic destination.
Aquarius | Jan. 21-Feb. 18 Emotional pressure or personal issues will have you feeling pulled in two different directions. Take some time to pamper yourself. EUGENIA LAST
The stars of feminism are not men!
even take a moment to Google prominent or ground-breaking women throughout the world before settling on male feminists as the real stars of contemporary feminism? In case research trouble resulted in this atrocity of an opinion piece, please let me provide a list of contemporary women who are doing amazing things throughout the world: Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (writer), Malala Yousufzai (education activist), Eqbal Asa’d (youngest doctor in the world), Reshma Saujani (founder of Girls Who Code), or Mae Jemison (first AfricanAmerican woman in space). I
Re: ‘Celebrate feminist men on Women’s Day’ (Metro, March 5) I cannot express how profoundly disappointed and outraged I am. As if our world isn’t male-dominated enough, we must now pay tribute to male feminists on International Women’s Day? Does (columnist Jenna) Busch also believe that African-Americans should recognize white people who support civil rights? Did Busch
purposefully left out women in the entertainment industry because Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Mindy Kaling, and Beyonce should be rather well-known feminists by now, and yet Busch didn’t profile any of them either. You could have spotlighted female politicians, female scientists, female authors (we are, as Busch pointed out, 51 percent of the population, so there are a lot of us) but instead you chose male feminists, who deserve a cookie at most for being decent human beings. Shame on you, Jenna Busch, and shame on Metro for this nonsense. ALEXANDRA BERNSON
The idea that women should be more open to feminism and equality because certain male celebrities accept it is condescending and patronizing, to say the least. While it is important to have male allies, for Busch to tell us to focus on men during International Women’s Day is missing the point entirely. NOELLE FIELDING, VIA EMAIL

It’s all about next year, and I’m OK with that. Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli could have gone multiple directions before Monday’s 3 p.m. trade deadline. He chose to keep his cool, under the pressures of having his job security questioned by many people outside the organization. And for a team that could very well get into the playoffs this year, the idea of overpaying for help must have been a tempting one. Instead, Chiarelli acted like a GM whose job was not on the line. He played his cards like a man who was confident he’d get a shot to fix his mistakes in the offseason. Those mistakes included trading defenseman Johnny Boychuk for draft picks just days before the start of the regular season, and refusing to bring back veteran tough guy Shawn Thornton. Boychuk, a top-four defenseman, is pretty much everything “Bruins hockey” stands for. A tough, physical, defensive-minded shot-blocker who has a big shot of his own. He wasn’t a liability with the puck on his stick, and his leadership off the ice was perhaps greater than anyone on the outside would have ever imagined.
Opinion
DANNY PICARD @DANNYPICARD “The Danny Picard Show” airs every weekday at DannyPicard.com. Danny can also be heard on WEEI 93.7 FM and seen on CSNNE.
Chiarelli never replaced him. And in the process, the B’s defense has looked as bad as it’s ever been under coach Claude Julien. Thornton didn’t provide the same skill set as Boychuk, but his valuable leadership in the room spoke volumes, to the point where Chiarelli decided to add some veteran leadership by trading for veteran Max Talbot on Monday.
The 31-year-old Talbot is also under contract for next season, for just $1 million. And that’s what this trade deadline for the Bruins was all about: next year. Chiarelli also acquired 22-year-old right-winger Brett Connolly from Tampa Bay, in exchange for two second-round picks. Connolly was the sixth overall pick in the 2010 draft, which saw some pretty good players taken in the first round — Taylor Hall, Tyler Seguin, Ryan Johansen, Jeff Skinner, and Vladimir Tarasenko to name a few. Could Chiarelli have outbid Detroit by giving Dallas a firstround pick for veteran winger Erik Cole? Sure, but that would have been a panic move. And it would not have won the B’s a championship. Chiarelli didn’t panic at the deadline. The moves that he made — and didn’t make — show me that he’s committed to fixing the Bruins in the offseason, and putting a competitive team on the ice in 2015-16, which still has many — but not all —of the major pieces it takes to make a legitimate playoff run, if healthy. He’s committed to the Bruins contending for a Stanley Cup next season. And I’m OK with that.

In a move that was several years in the making, the Patriots are letting Vince Wilfork free. New England will now have an extra $8.06 million in salary cap space to work with. The former All-Pro defensive tackle announced the Patriots’ decision himself on Twitter Thursday. “I want to take the time just to let everyone know that I was informed on Tuesday that the Patriots will not be picking up my option,” Wilfork wrote. “I’m in a good place. I have a great relationship with the Patriots organization. Please know how blessed my family and I have been to be able to play 11 years in New England
for an amazing organization. The love you guys as fans have shown me have been my inspiration year in and year out … Your messages your stories your conversations and support always touch my heart.
