Anthony Cardinale talks Whitey, Gotti and the FBI Lawyer. Just don’t call him a mob attorney. He’s been known for decades as the lawyer you called when you were really deep in it: Accused of stabbing the son of a Boston cop more than two dozen times before leaving him to die in a Revere alleyway? Running a ship-full of guns to the IRA? When police or prosecutors wanted to make an example of you, you called Anthony Cardinale, a 64-year-old Belmont resident, who has been practicing law for 37 years. Cardinale wanted to be an attorney from a young age. He split his youth between Manhattan and New Jersey and worked at his family’s restaurant — Delsomma — in Manhattan’s Theatre District. He saw the reverence with which his father and uncles treated the doctors and attorneys who dined there. Never scientifically inclined, Cardinale decided young to become a criminal defense attorney. A boxing enthusiast, Cardinale came up from New York to play linebacker at Wilkes University, attended Suffolk Law and has stuck around the area since. Taken under the wing of F. Lee Bailey, who defended Boston Strangler Albert DeSalvo, Cardinale was 32 and representing North End mob boss Gennaro Anguilo, who told Cardinale he’d grown up with the same dream: to be a criminal attorney. “Well,” Cardinale recalled telling the mobster. “You got half of that.” By 34, he was representing Anthony Salerno, Genovese family boss, in the so-called “Commission case,” the largest organized crime case in the country at the time. “All these guys that attain those positions, are extremely smart guys, they didn’t get there because they were stupid. They got there because they are very, very bright guys,” he said. What does Cardinale make of the term mob lawyer? “If someone is saying it as if it means something negative, of course I don’t like it,” he said. While representing Patriarca crime family boss Frank Salemme in the 1990s, Cardinale

Zealous advocate Former prosecutor Gerard T. Leone Jr. calls Cardinale a “well-respected, well-regarded lawyer and for good reason. “He’s always well-prepared. He’s tough as nails and he’s a zealous advocate for his clients,” said Leone. Martin W. Healy, legal counsel at the Massachusetts
Bar Association, worked with Cardinale in the early 1990s to lobby against a state racketeering law. Defense attorneys feared it would be abused and misapplied. The state still doesn’t have a RICO law. “People were mesmerized at his intricate knowledge of the statute,” said Healy. “He is so unassuming. He’s not full of ego. He knew it was a flawed
Teflon Don
Representing Gotti In the early 1990s, Cardinale was part of legal team for John Gotti, the Teflon Don and patriarch of the Gambino crime family. Gotti was a smart, tough man who could be wickedly funny even when he knew his defense was going down in flames, and that he’d likely be going to jail for a long, long time, Cardinale recalled. “He would never even say
that the mob existed,” he said of Gotti. “That’s how ingrained it was.”

law and he knew it had real effects on real people.” Healy added, “I don’t think there’s any other attorney I’ve met locally that matches his skill sets. His knowledge base and his ability to communicate using a very common sense approach. He deals with very complex, esoteric statutes like RICO and he can boil it down. He relates very well to a jury.”
was instrumental in unmasking James “Whitey” Bulger and Stephen “The Rifleman” Flemmi as federal informants, said Brian Kelly, a former federal prosecutor who now works for the Boston office of law firm Nixon Peabody. Cardinale made a motion that forced the unveiling of all federal informants connected to Salemme’s case. The FBI shielded Bulger and Flemmi because they were getting the feds arrests and convictions, he said. Careers in the FBI are made on turning informants, and Bulger and Flemmi were prized. “His filing set a lot of things in motion,” said Kelly, who described Cardinale as “an excellent, hard working, dogged attorney. “There was always that feeling with him,the other side knows what they’re doing so
you better know what you’re doing,” said Kelly. “I don’t think there’s any other attorney I’ve met locally that matches his skill sets,” said Martin W. Healy, legal counsel at the Massachusetts Bar Association. “His knowledge base and his ability to communicate using a very common sense approach. He deals with very complex, esoteric statutes like RICO and he can boil it down. He relates very well to a jury.” While Cardinale made his name representing mafiosi, he hasn’t taken a mob case in six years. The last one involved Boston-based Carmen “The Cheeseman” DiNunzio, an alleged associate of the Patriarca crime family perhaps best known for his obesity. The structure of New England’s underworld shifted. People were thrown in jail. Gangsters ratted on other gangsters. Whitey Bulger went on the lam. Others — Gotti, Anguilo and Salerno, died years ago. Calls from mobsters stopped coming. “I don’t get those calls anymore because there’s no one to call me,” he explained. “There’s no mob cases around anymore. There’s nothing left. It ran its course.” So how does he keep busy? He mostly deals with white collar crime — tax and Medicaid fraud cases and still handles drug crime cases and public corruption cases. He recently won the acquittal of a prolific builder in Rhode Island. Asked if he misses those mob cases and the headlines that go along with them, Cardinale concedes he liked being the guy on speed dial when Public Enemy No. 1 gets nabbed. “I always took that as a compliment,” he said, sitting in his dog friendly office -- the resident Boston terrier is named Fred -- on Summer Street in Southie. Any case he wouldn’t take on? Yes, he said. He wouldn’t take on clients accused of animal cruelty or clients accused of sexual violence involving kids. “I couldn’t be fair,” he said. “I couldn’t do it.” DANNY MCDONALD @DMacCash daniel.mcdonald@metro.us

Police: More charges possible for former dean The reverend and former high school dean who authorities say shot a 17-year-old male student over a marijuana dispute may face more charges after a police search of his Roxbury home yielded drugs and guns. Inside Shaun Harrison’s 18 Pompeii St. home were two handguns, a rifle, a shotgun, multiple calibers of ammunition, “trafficking weight of cocaine and a large amount of marijuana.” Harrison, 55, was fired from Boston English High School last week after cops said he shot a teen in the head Tuesday on Magazine Street. He was arrested on Wednesday and arraigned on Thursday. Prosecutors alleged Harrison ran a marijuana ring and used the victim to sell the drugs. METRO

Lawsuit. Boston law firms seek to lift state’s charter schools cap Three powerhouse Boston law firms have joined forces and are suing the state on behalf of students denied a spot in city charter schools. The pro bono lawsuit asserts that the demand for charter school seats exceeds the supply because of “an artificial legal cap” and is demanding that the cap be lifted. The charter schools are open to all students in the city, but lotteries determine which students are admitted. The suit by the three firms — WilmerHale, Goodwin Procter and Foley Hoag — says thousands of students were unable to secure a seat last year through the schools’ lotteries. Many,“find themselves trapped in a failing noncharter public school,” the law firms said. “Every student in Boston has a right to an adequate

‘Huge gaps’ in Clinton email record, Benghazi probe chief says
Huge gaps exist in the emails former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has provided to a congressional committee investigating the 2012 attack on a U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, the panel’s chairman said on Sunday. Republican Representative Trey Gowdy said his committee lacked documentation from Clinton’s trip to Libya after the attack despite a popular photo image of her using a handheld device during a flight to that country. “We have no emails from that day. In fact we have no emails from that trip,” said Gowdy, who heads the committee in the U.S. House of Representatives. “There are huge gaps.” Widely considered the frontrunner for the 2016 Democratic presidential nomination, Clinton used a private email account for all official business as President Barack Obama’s secretary of state from 2009 to 2013. Republicans have scrutinized Clinton’s actions over the Benghazi attack in which Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other people were killed. REUTERS

Malaysian PM vows to keep up search for MH370
Obama cites progress in U.S.Iran nuclear talks
Prime Minister Najib Razak said on Sunday Malaysia remained committed to the search for the missing MH370 jetliner a year after it vanished without a trace, and a report by international investigators offered no new clues as to its fate. A 584-page interim report into the disappearance provided details on how radars had tracked the plane going off course to issues concerning the battery of the flight data recorder’s locator beacon. However, it did not identify a definitive cause for the disappearance, adding there was nothing suspicious in the financial, medical or personal histories of the pilots or crew.
The United States and Iran have narrowed their differences in nuclear weapons negotiations, President Barack Obama said in the face of a renewed Republican warning on Sunday that any deal will face a tough congressional review. “We have made progress in narrowing the gaps, but those gaps still exist,” Obama said in an interview on CBS News’ “Face the Nation.” He nonetheless repeated he was willing to walk away from negotiations, which are scheduled to reach a framework deal in late March, if Tehran does not meet Washington’s demands Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Republican, cautioned the Democratic president not to make “the bad deal we all anticipate he’s going to make”. He said Obama “cannot work around Congress forever”.

Willow and Jaden Smith offer more teen proclamations
Why does the publicist for Willow and Jaden Smith keep letting them do interviews? Scratch that, why do they have a publicist to begin with? Now Willow, 14, and Jaden, 16, are blabbing to Billboard about their music careers and evolving consciousnesses or something. But the real choice cuts come when the siblings let forth on their respective takes on fashion. Jaden, for instance, wants “to look like Batman and Robin,” while Willow takes a more utilitarian approach. “I could literally climb a mountain and survive a couple nights in nature,” she says. “That’s a requirement for my clothes because one day I was on the freeway and I saw a mountain, so I literally just pulled over and climbed it.” Kids these days.

Dig that mountain-climbing fashion.
I’m honestly surprised it took so long for the Internet to reach this level of crazy. One trailblazing eBay auctioneer put up a sealed plastic bag purported to contain “air from Kanye show,” which sounds pretty stupid — until you find out about the nearly 100 bidders who drove the price north of $60,000 before the whole thing was scrapped by eBay. But copycats haven’t let that deter them, as several similar posts have gone live, like another bag of West air infused with bay leaves and a bag of air from a Garth Brooks concert. You can also grab a bag of West’s flatulence for the bargain “buy it now” price of five bucks. Good luck getting a certificate of authenticity, though.

If you’ve been missing your favorite New Orleans-dwelling supernatural creatures, fear not: “The Originals” returns tonight after a hiatus. We talked to Joseph Morgan to get into the psyche of the man at the center of all the power-grabbing, murderous shenanigans on the show: Klaus Mikaelson, the perpetually sulky werewolf/vampire hybrid. Do you get frustrated with how stubborn Klaus can be? Yeah, sometimes. I think, “God, if he’d just be a bit more accommodating, this would all work out fine.” But I enjoy playing that stubbornness. It’s not what I would do in those situations, but that’s what’s fun about playing it, you know? It’s interesting to have the opportunity to be someone who is not accommodating in the slightest to anyone else. Will he ever grow out of that? No, I think, if anything, it’ll go the other way. He’s convinced he’s right. Whatever he’s doing, he’s convinced that that’s the way it should be done, and he’s going to do anything and mow down anyone who disagrees with him and manipulate and fight and find a way to have his way. Now that he has a daughter, he’s got something to actually justify doing that. It’s kind of sweet that he’s doing it all for his child. I know. Now I feel like people can get behind him a little more. He’s doing terrible things for a good reason. I like the idea of, like, this is his daughter, and woe betide anyone who gets in the way and threatens her safety.

This show and “The Vampire Diaries” both have such complicated mythology. Do you ever have trouble keeping track of it all? No, I welcome it. I thrive on it. The more complex, the better. There’s a really dense mythology to both shows, but I made it my mission when I joined “The Vampire Diaries” to know it inside out, and I read all the books, and I watched all the episodes, and I feel like I have a really good grasp of the mythology of the shows. So I feel like all of that stuff with Klaus, you know, his real father and his werewolf side and his vampire side and his lineage and all those things, are just useful tools for me to make him more complex and interesting. Hear relief in every note Music therapy. Put away the pills and pop in your personal music playlist. What do you reach for at the end of a bad day? If you’ve got a playlist for that, you already know the power of music. But its medical benefits go beyond mood boosting. Once a marginal alternative therapy, music is now recognized as constructive in reaching patients with disorders such as autism or Alzheimer’s. The field has come a long way in the 20 years since Suzanne Hanser founded the Music Therapy Department at Boston’s Berklee College of Music. Hanser specializes in pain management and just completed an experiment at Boston Medical Center’s family medicine unit, using music therapy to aid in pain management and anxiety relief. The goal of the project was to see if music therapy could cut the use of conventional medications, which often have negative side effects, including addiction. Hanser breaks down music’s role in pain and anxiety relief for us.

Music balances brain and body chemistry “Not only can listening to music that’s important to you allow the release of serotonin and dopamine, it’s also aiding release of the deeply relaxing neurochemicals, and that’s balancing the system. There’s no “right music for every mood There’s no one kind of music to soothe the soul. Taking the recommendation of listening to a mellow track, or even nature sounds, to calm down may backfire. “If you’re really anxious, and you put on some slow music with long melodies and flowing themes, it might be so far from your emotional state that it’s not resonating with you, says Hanser.

What’s often less clear is how to best go about doing that. “Rather than just saying something like, ‘My job as a receptionist is just to let people through,’ you should be using your job as a platform and take more things on, says Herminia Ibarra, the author of “Act Like a Leader, Think Like a Leader and an expert on leadership development. Ibarra offers this advice for employees planning their next move:
Take risks Oftentimes, Ibarra says, employees are hesitant about mix-

You can say, ‘I don’t want to be that person, but I am going to make a commitment to explore outside my comfort zone.’

Being for women doesn’t mean being anti-men
that all what matters on this freaking planet is only what women want. The stars of feminism are not good women (for the most part). They’re diehard feminazis who have no idea what real life is (Look at Metro’s March 2 Women’s Day article). They sit in front of a computer crapping out editorials about how evil men are, when they have no clue as to what men actually do. They do not acknowledge the good men who get up every morning and do very hard jobs, just so they can sit
Re: ‘The stars of feminism are not men!’ (Metro, March 6-8) These pathetic creatures you call “male feminists” are a result of feminist propaganda. Feminist women force them to abandon all sense of manhood, make them believe that men are the most evil thing in the world, and
comfortably in their leather seats, talking garbage! You know what we need? Honest feminists who fight for the needs of women, while respecting the needs of men. Just saying. LYANE LOPEZ, VIA EMAIL
Give credit only where credit is due
letter writers Bernson and Fielding, who complained about the point of view expressed in Jenna Busch’s column, “Celebrate Feminist Men on Women’s Day” of March 5. To celebrate men on International Women’s Day is as ludicrous as the recent media trend toward crediting women with winning World War II! STEVE ELISCU, VIA EMAIL

SO-CALLED COLLEGE SPORTS CHEATS ALWAYS SURVIVE In the end, we’ll overlook Jim Boeheim’s unlawfulness. Just last month, the Vegas strip dimmed the lights when the NCAA’s eternal enemy, Jerry Tarkanian, passed away, and Tark’s shadiness was thoroughly celebrated throughout the sports world. Who doesn’t like a rebel, after all? John Calipari, who got to where he is today by being the Sultan of Sanctions, is having a jersey retired in his honor by UMass next season. No doubt, Amherst, Massachusetts yearns for Cal’s sketchiness. So now, it’s Boeheim’s turn to be put through the vacated wins wringer. The thing that sucks for Boeheim is that he’ll be 71-years-old by the time he’s done serving his ninegame suspension for “failing to promote an atmosphere of compliance. There’s not much time for a UConn-style bounce-back championship, here.

Poop really hit the fan for Boeheim this past Saturday when NC State fans were singing the hook to the Village People’s “YMCA when Boeheim’s team had possession of the ball in a 71-57 Orange loss to the Wolfpack and Boeheim didn’t do himself any favors by refusing to meet with the media after the game. “He doesn’t want to answer ‘No comment,’ Syracuse assistant Mike Hopkins said about Boeheim’s absence at something resembling a postgame press conference. So, if you hate Syracuse and their countless media alums, get your digs in now. Because when Boeheim retires in a few years, all will be forgiven. In college sports, if you ain’t cheatin’ you ain’t tryin.’
NFL. Former Pro Bowl RB Johnson shot in drive-by
Chris Johnson was shot early Sunday.

Chris Johnson, arguably the most dominant running back in the NFL a few years back, was shot in the shoulder during a drive-by shooting at an intersection in Orlando, Florida around 4 a.m. Sunday. Johnson is said to be in stable condition. Dreekins Oricko Johnson, the 28-year-old driver of the vehicle Johnson was in, was killed by gunfire according to reports. METRO
The Miami Dolphins made the biggest splash of the NFL o-season thus far as they reached an agreement with defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh. The deal in place is reportedly worth $114 million over six years with $60 million guaranteed. The Miami Herald reported that Dolphins owner Stephen Ross was “determined to land the big prize of the 2015 free agency class. Suh’s former team, the Detroit Lions, were said to be in the mix to sign the four-time Pro Bowler but the years Miami was oering trumped Detroit’s oer. Go! Fight! Win ... a lawsuit! At my high school, there was always this big debate as to whether or not cheerleading was a sport. I was always of the opinion that if golf is considered a sport, and bowling is considered a sport, then cheerleading – remember, they often throw each other in the air AND make human pyramids - should be as well. (Plus, if you’re a heterosexual teenage male, what exactly is the point of pissing off 15-20 of the top talent your school has to offer?)
Know this: Cheerleaders do it for the love of the game. Because there is zero financial gain to be had. The NFL’s Raiderettes had to scratch and claw in court just to earn $9 per hour for all cheerleading activities last year and last week, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers cheerleaders settled with the team for $825,000 for working events without pay. While that sounds like a win, that $825,000 will go rather quickly after lawyers fees and after dispersing it to the 94 cheerleaders involved in the suit.
