Cop shot in the face is in stable condition Shootout. The suspected gunman was shot dead by police. The Boston police officer who was shot in the face from point-blank range on Friday is in stable condition. Officer John Moynihan was among several police officers that stopped a vehicle around 6:40 p.m. Friday near Humboldt Avenue and Ruthven Street in Roxbury. Authorities allege Angelo West, a 41-year-old from Boston, exited the vehicle and shot Moynihan, a decorated sixyear veteran of the force, in the face. He is being treated at Boston Medical Center. Boston police said Sunday afternoon that Moynihan is listed in “stable and improving condition” and is expected to be moved out of intensive care in coming days. Moynihan had undergone several hours of surgery since the shooting, according to a statement from Boston police, and doctors have successfully removed the bullet from his neck. “I was happy to hear that he made it through surgery without any complications. It shows you what a strong kid he is and what a great medical team they have here at Boston Medical Center,” said Boston Police Commissioner William Evans in a statement. West, the suspected gunman, was shot dead during an exchange of gunfire with police at the scene. Police have said the shooting was unprovoked, and that the officers taking part in the vehicle

Commuter rail back running at 100 percent … finally The commuter rail is expected to be up and running at full service Monday after a hellish winter led to weeks of delays that frustrated Boston-area riders. Commuter rail and MBTA service was hampered this winter due to record-breaking snow; Boston accumulated more than 8 feet. The extreme winter conditions wreaked havoc on the transit infrastructure. It knocked many commuter rail locomotives out of commission. Earlier this month, Keolis Commuter Services, the commuter rails operator, only had 44 locomotives in operation, well below its goal of having 60 active locomotives. Gov. Charlie Baker said last week state officials will have an opportunity to sit down and negotiate penalties with Keolis. “There will be appropriate penalties,” the governor said. Keolis General Manager Gerald Francis is expected to be at North Station this morning to thank passengers for their patience. METRO

Attorney General talks Olympics, weed legalization Attorney General Maura Healey said when it comes to the Olympics she is “waiting to be convinced.” Healey, a Democrat from Charlestown, made the comments during a “Keller at Large” program that aired Sunday on WBZ-TV. “I’m a huge sports fan and love the Olympics, but I think, like many people in the state, I’m waiting to be convinced that this is the right move for

Boston and Massachusetts,” she said. Healey, who as attorney general approves the constitutionality of ballot questions in the state, indicated she would support allowing voters to weigh in on the issue through a state ballot next year. Healey also said she does not support full legalization of marijuana in the state, saying she has concerns after speaking to law enforcement colleagues in places like Colorado and Washington state, where marijuana is fully legal. Defense moves into spotlight in bombing trial Trial. Tsarnaev’s lawyers maintain his elder brother was the mastermind. The Boston Marathon bombing trial shifts sharply in tone this week when prosecutors rest their case against Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and turn proceedings over to his lawyers, who have already admitted he planted explosives at the finish line in April 2013. One of Tsarnaev’s lawyers, death penalty specialist Judy Clarke, opened the trial on March 4 with a blunt statement to the jury that “it was him” who killed three people and injured 264 in the attack. Clarke contended, however, that the 21-year-old played a secondary role to his older brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, in planning and executing the

plot. Her goal: persuade jurors in federal court in Boston that Tsarnaev deserves a sentence of life in prison rather than the death penalty. It is an argument the defense team, which includes

death penalty specialist David Bruck and Boston’s top courtappointed lawyer, Miriam Conrad, will not be able to make in earnest until the jury decides if Tsarnaev is guilty. Until then, they are left to poke holes in the prosecution’s

case and work in as many allusions to 26-year-old Tamerlan’s influence as the judge will allow, according to legal experts. The jury got a taste of the approach in the past week when an FBI agent who searched Tsarnaev’s college dorm room described finding metal BB pellets, which were packed into the bombs that ripped through the crowd. Prosecutors also said the brothers practiced shooting with BB guns. Three days after the April 15, 2013 attack, they fatally shot a police officer. Conrad asked the agent, Kimberly Franks, if the search had turned up actual firearms or just BBs. Franks testified that no guns were found. When a second FBI agent described finding the Tsarnaevs’ Cambridge apartment empty, Conrad noted it had not been vacant when agents arrived four days after the bombing. REUTERS

Thousands of faithful wave fronds at Pope Francis Pope Francis led the world’s Roman Catholics in Palm Sunday celebrations by paying tribute to those killed for their faith, a reference to the victims of Islamic State militants. Francis, who earlier this month began the third year of his papacy, presided at a colorful procession in St. Peter’s Square commemorating the day the Bible says people of Jerusalem welcomed Jesus days before he was crucified. The coming week is one of the busiest in the liturgical calendar for the leader of the world’s 1.2 billion Roman Catholics. On Holy Thursday, he presides at two services, including one at a Rome prison where he will wash and kiss the feet of male and female inmates to commemorate Christ’s gesture of humility toward his apostles on the night before he died. All of the crocheted animals are twenty apiece, but I give her the pig after hearing what it’s for. b I remember when my oldest went off to college and how hard it was for the younger ones. I’m seeing it again with the grandkids. Besides, crocheting is more of a hobby than a business. My husband always jokes that I lose money every year because I give so many away. I joke that we lose money every year because he can’t leave the festival food alone. I don’t blame him, though, we’ve been here all day. I’m sure he’s hungry or thirsty, or just itching to get up and leave the tent, so I hand him the twenty to go and find us a snack. He takes it and makes his way to a food vendor a few booths away. Crash pilot was planning big gesture: Paper

The co-pilot suspected of deliberately crashing an airliner, killing 150 people, had told his girlfriend he was planning a spectacular gesture so “everyone will know my name,” a German daily said on Saturday. The Bild newspaper published an interview with a woman who said she had a relationship in 2014 with Andreas Lubitz, the man French prosecutors believe locked himself alone in the cockpit of the Germanwings Airbus on Tuesday and steered it into the French Alps, killing all on board. “When I heard about the crash, I remembered a sentence ... he said: ‘One day I’ll do something that will change the system, and then everyone will know my name and remember it,’ ”

said the woman, a flight attendant the paper gave the pseudonym of Maria W. “I didn’t know what he meant by that at the time, but now it’s obvious,” she said. “He did it because he realized that, due to his health problems, his big dream of working at Lufthansa, of a having job as a pilot, and as a pilot on long-distance flights, was nearly impossible.” “He never talked much about his illness, only that he was in psychiatric treatment,” she told the paper, adding they finally broke up because she was afraid of him. The woman also told Bild: “We always talked a lot about work and then he became a different person. He became upset about the conditions we worked under: too little money, fear of losing the contract, too much pressure.” REUTERS

Four-year-old rides bus alone in search of slushie

A 4-year-old Pennsylvania girl surprised a driver and passengers when she boarded a bus alone in the middle of the night on a quest for a sugary slushy, transportation officials said. Surveillance footage shows the girl, bundled up in all purple, boarding a Philadelphia bus at 3 a.m. on Friday. The girl, who appeared cheerful as she stretched and dangled her boots off her seat, told bus riders that she wanted to get a slushie, Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority spokeswoman Kristin Geiger said. Upon noticing the child, the bus driver pulled over, called his control center and waited for police to arrive, Geiger said. The girl was taken unharmed to a nearby hospital, where she was reunited with her parents. REUTERS

Singapore bids farewell to founding father Lee

Grieving Singaporeans were joined by world leaders on Sunday to pay their final respects to the country’s first prime minister, Lee Kuan Yew, as the nation came to a near-halt to honor its “founding father.” Tens of thousands of people waving flags braved heavy rain and lined the streets to catch a last glimpse of Lee as his coffin was taken by gun carriage on a procession through the streets of the country he helped build to his state funeral. Lee, who died aged 91 on Monday, is credited with founding modern Singapore and transforming it from a small, colonial British trading port into one of the world’s wealthiest nations. REUTERS

Shortly before 1 a.m., officers were called to a building near the beach, where they found the victims, three of whom are students at Alabama A&M University, the Bay County Sheriff ’s office said in an electronic statement. I thought I wanted a Soho House membership before, but now I really, really want one. The private club’s Los Angeles outpost recently celebrated its fifth birthday, and to mark the occasion a former membership director is spilling the beans on which big names have been turned away from its cushy confines. “We denied access to every Real Housewife who

There was debate over Britney Spears. Not sure how that played out. We tried not to give membership to people who would fuel paparazzi or bring press.” This place sounds amazing.

Christine Baranski wants a musical episode of ‘The Good Wife’

CRAZIER THINGS HAVE HAPPENED.

Sure, it doesn’t make any sense whatsoever for hit legal drama “The Good Wife” to feature an episode where everyone’s singing all of a sudden, but wouldn’t that still be kind of awesome? Co-star Christine Baranski seems to think so, at least, but she’s not holding her breath. “I keep waiting, but it’s not in our style,” she tells E! News. “How cool would it be if Alicia (Julianna Margulies) just had a dream where there was a nightmare Christmas party where we could make use of all the musical talent?” Pretty cool, Ms. Baranski. Pretty cool.

They are just getting to know each other and we’ll see what happens.” And Harris is clearly a good sport — or really, really into Swift — because come on, a Kenny Chesney concert? That’s dedication.

SOMEONE’S BEEN GETTING SNUGGLY.

This Sacha Baron Cohen movie news is confounding

Sorry, Queen fans, those reports about Sacha Baron Cohen re-joining the planned Freddie Mercury biopic were actually not that accurate. It turns out the band’s manager, Jim Beach, was just joking when he said Cohen was back onboard, guitarist Brian May clarifies. Beach “said, in response to inquiries about the progress on the Freddie feature film, that Sacha Baron Cohen had been re-engaged to write, produce and direct the film, as well as starring in all four major roles,” May writes. “I’m afraid some folks might have taken it seriously.” Cohen was attached to play the iconic singer for years, but officially left the project in 2013.

We are not the champions after all.

Sex, love and Tove Lo Interview. She may have a penchant for bad habits, but that only makes things interesting.

With “Habits” reaching number one on the Billboard charts and an arena tour with Katy Perry behind her, all eyes are on Tove Lo, pop’s newest breakthrough artist. We talk to the Swedish electro-pop singer about the dark side of relationships and moving on after getting her heart broken. On having great, no-stringsattached sex: “I’ve had a lot of sex without hoping it will turn into love. I can definitely separate the two. But when you are in love with someone, and you have sex, it’s always better. But [good sex] can definitely cloud your judgment. ‘Talking Body’ is about that. If you start off having great sex, things tend to last longer than if you started by going out on a date, and things just don’t click.” The best revenge on an ex:

“It’s hard when you’ve been hurt. All you want is for the other person to be hurt as well. But the best revenge is just to not care anymore. I’ve been on the other side of it, wanting [my ex] back, and he was like, ‘No, you f---ed it up.’ That was probably the hardest feeling for me because I felt like I ruined something really good, and now I can’t fix it.” Relationships versus single life: “I like being single more, but somehow I always end up in a relationship. I love being in love. I love the very beginning of a relationship, when things aren’t defined, and you’re just having a great time together. When you’re a couple, sometimes there’s all these demands that come with it like, ‘Oh, now that we’re a couple, you can’t do that.’ But it becomes really beautiful when you show your flaws. I think it’s easier to be single, but it’s definitely worth it to be in a relationship when you really love someone.” On falling in love again: “I’m in a really great relationship right now, and it’s the first time I feel like it’s

Are you ready for the new SAT? Experts say students are in for a surprise. LAKSHMI GANDHI @LakshmiGandhi lakshmi.gandhi@metro.us

The new, revised SAT exam will be rolled out in exactly a year, and one tutoring specialist has a message for all students planning to take it: You’re in for a big (and unpleasant) surprise. “The College Board [which administers the exam] has gone out of its way to make the redesigned SAT prepproof, says Ray Huntington, the founder and CEO of Huntington Learning Center, a tutoring and test-prep company. “If a student depends on tricks and shortcuts, they aren’t going to do well. Huntington notes that while many students and parents have begun to ask him about studying for the new SAT, he expects the public at large to be caught off guard. Here’s how to get ready:

Build a strong foundation “In order to do well in math on the new test, you have to be a good reader, says Huntington, who has been studying the sample questions that have been released so far. “Many of the math problems

The SAT will be revised next year. ISTOCK

Get comfortable with history Huntington also warns that the passages in the verbal section will be much more complicated than what students are used to. “The redesigned SAT will require historical passages as well as passages based on the global conversation, he explains.

will have a backstory.

Strengthen your writing skills This is also true of the essay section. “The student will now have to understand the author’s argument and verbalize what that argument is, he notes. “Many students will end up summarizing the passage instead of analyzing it.

Online interviews will cut down on the expense and time of traveling for busy students.

Will students soon be interviewing on video for their first jobs? Are you ready for your close-up? Molly Congdon @MetroBOS letters@metro.us

For generations of college seniors, those all-important first job interviews have traditionally followed the same script: Applicants put on their best suits, print out their rĂŠsumĂŠs that highlight their internships and parttime jobs and sit anxiously with their portfolios in an office waiting room. But one entrepreneur is betting those days will soon be over. Chris Young is the CEO and founder of Async Interview, which facilitates job interviews using video. Young came up with the idea for his business as a result of his own frustrations with the labor- (and travel-) intensive interview pro-

cess. He sees his company as a solution for both the candidates (who are often still busy juggling classes and homework) and the campus recruiters crisscrossing the country each year — a method for attending interviews without leaving the comfort of home. Nervous about the prospect of interviewing on camera for your dream job? We asked Young for his suggestions on how to prepare:

Don’t complicate your life “Use a computer instead of a tablet or smartphone, Young says. “It will give you better quality, and you won’t have to awkwardly hold anything.

Top to bottom

Practice, practice, practice “Get comfortable with being onscreen, Young says. “Take advantage of all the practice you can get. Skype with your mom or a friend and have them ask you potential interview questions.

Fold those flannel pajama pants, and put them back in the drawer. “Be sure to dress from head to toe, not just from the waist up, he says. “This is not a no-pants interview; sometimes they may be able to see what you are wearing below the waist.

Don’t be a silhouette

Were you thinking about sitting in front of that window? Think again. “If you sit in front of a light, the recruiter won’t be able to see your face, Young says. “You want all of the light in front of you, shining on your face.

Stick it “Tape notes to your wall. You can list certain talking points that you’d like to bring up no matter what questions are asked.

Stay focused Remember there are no do-overs in interviews. “It’s a simulated environment, and you’re unable to rerecord responses, Young says. “When the interview starts, that’s it. You can’t say, ‘Hold on, let me start over again.’

remark about Sen. John McCain “carrying water for Israel.” When you consider the fact that some of Iran’s leaders have called for the destruction of Israel, you cannot blame Sen. McCain and Prime Minister Netanyahu for being concerned about Israel’s safety. I have disagreed with Netanyahu when it comes to his settlement policy and his reluctance to establish a Palestinian state. However, when it comes to his warnings about Iran, he (and McCain) are completely in the right.

In a state of satisfaction Re: ‘Cruz smart to look into Obamacare’ (Metro, March 27-29) Note to Frank Dixon: I wonder where you are getting your information on “how bad” Obamacare is. In New York State, my health insurance premium was cut by almost two-thirds when I went from private insurance to coverage provided via New York State of Health. In addition, the law required my new health insurance carrier to cover things like preventive

care, which my old (and much more expensive policy) did not! My first hand experience is that I am extremely happy with Obamacare, but perhaps since Texas has one of the highest rates of uninsured in the nation due to its resistance to the Affordable Care Act, Sen. Cruz’s Texas constituents may not be as happy as I am. GREGORY HOLMAN, VIA EMAIL

With Opening Day just a week away, the Red Sox didn’t trade for Cole Hamels and still don’t have a so-called “ace in their rotation, but they certainly have pitchers in their rotation that have the stuff to potentially emerge as one — none more than Rick Porcello. Porcello was traded to the Red Sox from the Tigers as part of the Yoenis Cespedes trade this past offseason, and the 26-year-old is just entering the prime of his career. A New England native was sometimes lost in the mix with the dominant pitchers in Detroit in Justin Verlander, Anibal Sanchez and Max Scherzer. Porcello posted an ERA of 3.43 last year (the same as Sanchez) and that ERA would’ve been the best on the Red Sox’

staff last year, with the exception of Jon Lester before he was traded. Furthermore, it would’ve been the best over the last two years taking away Clay Buchholz’s 16 starts during an injury-plagued 2013 season. His numbers are better than some may think. His three shutouts last year led the American League. His 1.8 walks per nine innings were eighth in the American League, and season could’ve been even better as he went 0–4 with a 6.20 ERA in September. Most known for his ability to get ground balls, Porcello was third in all of baseball in 2013 getting grounders 58 percent of the time and then 51 percent last year. His two-seam sinker is his best pitch, and the pitch he relies on most to get ground balls. “He’s been on a staff with a lot of big-name pitchers and really good starting pitchers, so he sort of gets buried in the names in Detroit because he’s been part of such a good rotation, GM Ben Cherington said after the trade in December.

To advertise please contact 866-900-9473 or Bostonclassifieds@metro.us

“He’s been really good in his own right. Given his age, we feel there may be more upside. Even what he is right now we think is really going to help us. Porcello is entering his seventh season in the majors and there are signs showing his best years are coming up. He eclipsed the 200-inning mark for the first time last season, finishing with 204.2. And although his strikeout totals were down last year, he made up for it by having more control. His 1.8 walks per nine innings were the best of his career. Finally, he’s proven to be durable — something an ace needs to be — pitching in at least 31 games in each of the last four seasons. With there being so much talk of the Red Sox not having an ace in their rotation, don’t sleep on Porcello, as he is coming from one of the best rotations in all of baseball and entering the prime of his career.
