Feds: Ex-agent lied in Whitey Bulger trial

Denying the allegations Fitzpatrick, if found guilty, could face a lengthy prison term. He could be sentenced to a maximum of five years for each of the six perjury counts and a maximum of 10 years for the obstruction of justice counts. •

Perjury. The 74-yearold denies the charges. A former FBI agent has been indicted for perjury and obstruction of justice in connection with his testimony at Whitey Bulger’s trial. Robert Fitzpatrick, a 74-year-old who lives in Cranston, Rhode Island, is alleged to have made false statements to help Bulger’s defense and tried to enhance his own credibility as a former FBI official while testifying for the defense. Fitzpatrick was an assistant special agent in charge in the

FBI’s Boston field office from 1981-1986 and supervised the agency’s organized crime squad in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine. Bulger, who was a criminal kingpin in Boston’s underworld for decades, is perhaps most notorious for corrupting local FBI agents, which allowed him to commit crimes with impunity for years. In the fall of 2013, Bulger was sentenced to two consecutive life prison terms after being convicted of participating in 11 murders, drug trafficking, racketeering, extortion and money laundering, among other crimes. Now, a federal grand jury

has indicted Fitzpatrick on six counts of perjury and six counts of obstruction of justice. He surrendered himself to the U.S. Marshal Service on Thursday morning, according to multiple media outlets. Federal prosecutors allege Fitzpatrick falsely claimed that he was specifically sent to Boston by the assistant director of the FBI because there were major problems in the office. According to the U.S. Department of Justice that is wrong; he was sent to Boston as a routine reassignment and received no special instructions, according to the feds. Fitzpatrick also said that Bulg-

er told him he wasn’t an FBI informant. Federal authorities say that too was a lie; they say Bulger never denied he was an informant to Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick, who wrote a book titled “Betrayal, Whitey Bulger and the FBI Agent Who Fought to Bring Him Down,” also stated he tried to close down Bulger as an FBI informant but was overruled by FBI headquarters. That never happened either, according to prosecutors.

2

Fitzpatrick’s attorney, Robert Goldstein, told The Boston Globe on Thursday, “Mr. Fitzpatrick adamantly maintains his innocence and looks forward to challenging the government’s allegations in a courtroom as soon as possible.”

Former Boston Mayor Thomas Menino

Former Boston Mayor Tom Menino had an FBI file. Who knew? The file, first obtained by WGBH, details a 2003 probe into comments made about Sprint Telecommunications in 2002. Menino, according to the file, threatened “the company with the loss of a lucrative city contract unless the firm donated $25,000 to the mayoral youth fund.” According to the file, Menino, who died last October and served as Boston’s mayor from 1993 to 2014, threatened to give a Boston Housing Authority contract

to AT&T, since that company was sponsoring a summer youth program while Sprint “has done nothing.” In June of 2002, federal prosecutors found that the case had “prosecutive merit,” but authorities ultimately declined to prosecute the matter after reviewing the evidence. Menino’s FBI file states the matter would be “reopened should sufficient information be developed that substantiates the allegations regarding Mayor Menino.” DANNY MCDONALD

Tsarnaev trial’s sentencing phase stalled by sick juror Testimony was suspended on Thursday in the sentencing phase of convicted Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev’s trial due to a juror’s illness, a federal judge said. The trial will resume on Monday once one of the 12 jurors and six alternate jurors hearing the case recovers, Judge George O’Toole said. The jury found the 21-year-

old ethnic Chechen guilty this month of bombing the world renowned race on April 15, 2013. It is now tasked with deciding whether he should be sentenced to death or life in prison. Court is expected to open with prosecutors crossexamining Alexa Guevara, a 21-year-old college friend of Tsarnaev’s who sobbed as she told jurors on Wednesday that he was a kind person who encouraged her to go to art school, liked joking around, and was more decent than other college guys. Lawyers seeking to spare Tsarnaev the death penalty have sought to portray him as a bright young man whose chance at a good life in the United States was derailed when he fell under the influence of his now-dead older brother Tamerlan. The attack killed three and injured 264, many of whom lost limbs. It was the worst terror attack on U.S. soil since Sept. 11, 2001. REUTERS

Researchers behind the study studied Google searches containing the “N-word” in 196 designated market areas across the country. In short, they found a connection between Internet-based racism and black mortality. The most racist parts of America based on the Google searches, according to the study, were swaths of the South, pockets of the Midwest and areas of the rural Northeast, including western Massachusetts. Boy charged after gun goes off at school An 11-year-old Connecticut boy was arrested on Thursday after he brought a loaded gun to school and it discharged in a boys’ bathroom close to where students were attending an after-school program, police said.

Two rescued from rubble in Nepal Safety. Child, woman pulled from destruction after being trapped for five days. Hundreds cheered as rescuers toiling amid rubble left by Nepal’s earthquake pulled a boy and a woman to safety on Thursday after they had been trapped for five days. A 23-year-old maid, Krishna Devi Khadka, was found lying along with the bodies of three other people, police said. Officials said the chances of finding more survivors were fading as the death toll reached 5,858. But Nepal’s Armed Police Force managed to save 15-yearold Pema Lama from the collapsed ruins of Kathmandu’s Hilton Hotel. “I saw the police drilling for four hours to remove mounds of debris before they could pull him out,” said Ambar Giri, a medical worker at the scene. Away from the capital, aid was finally reaching some of Nepal’s remote towns and vilHouses

lages nestled among mountains and foothills, where the extent of the damage and loss of life has yet to be properly assessed. From an army helicopter flying from Chautara, northeast of Kathmandu, toward the Tibet border, a Reuters witness estimated 70 to 80 percent of buildings had been severely damaged. In a remote village, an army medical team treated injured locals and soldiers supervised the unloading of goods on a muddy expanse of ground next to a school that served as a helipad. In Chautara itself, a few people cleared rubble from the upper floors of their houses and mixed cement by the roadside, as the long rebuilding process began. It said 8 million people had been affected, with at least 2 million in need of tents, water, food and medicines over the next three months. An official from Nepal’s home ministry said the number of confirmed deaths from the 7.8 magnitude earthquake had risen to 5,858 by Thursday afternoon, and almost 13,800 were injured. Anger over the pace of the rescue has flared in some areas, with Nepalis accusing the government of being too slow to distribute international aid that flooded into the country. REUTERS

The unidentified sixthgrader was charged with possession of a weapon on school grounds, carrying a pistol without a permit, unlawful discharge of a firearm and reckless endangerment, said Acting New London Police Chief Peter Reichard. “It appears he brought the gun from home, and into school and was showing it to friends when it discharged,”

Reichard said. The incident occurred on Wednesday at Benny Dover Jackson Middle School in New London, about 80 miles east of Newtown where 26 people were killed by a 20-year-old gunman in 2012 at Sandy Hook Elementary School in the deadliest U.S. school shooting. Reichard said in Wednesday’s incident a teacher went

into the bathroom and found the gun in a garbage can. The student was released into the custody of his parents while awaiting a hearing in juvenile court. No charges have yet been filed against the boy’s parents, Reichard said. The student was suspended from the school and could face expulsion, school officials said. REUTERS

Liberal US Sen. Sanders to challenge Clinton in 2016

Sen. Bernie Sanders, an independent from Vermont, launched a long-shot bid for the 2016 Democratic presidential nomination on Thursday, a move likely to pressure Hillary Clinton from the left on issues from income inequality to corporate governance. Sanders, one of the most outspoken liberals in the Senate, called for rebuilding the middle class and reducing the influence of wealthy Americans and businesses on U.S. elections. “We’re in this race to win,” Sanders said at a news conference outside the U.S. Capitol.

“This country today, in my view, has more serious crises than at any time since the Great Depression,” he said. “How do we create an economy that works for all of our people rather than a small number of billionaires?” The 73-year-old, secondterm senator faces long odds against the fundraising might and name recognition of Clinton, the Democratic front-runner and former U.S. secretary of state, senator and first lady. LA judge declines to reduce Suge Knight’s bail

A Los Angeles judge declined on Thursday to lower the $10 million bail for onetime rap mogul Marion “Suge” Knight, who is held in jail on a murder charge in connection with a hit-and-run death. The ruling was made at a hearing in Los Angeles Superior Court where Knight appeared in an orange jumpsuit, two weeks after his attorney Matthew Fletcher told reporters he expected Knight would, at that time, be able to obtain the bail amount and regain his freedom. Knight, 50, has pleaded not guilty to charges including murder and attempted murder stemming from a hit-and-run at a hamburger

Detroit school system to split under Michigan governor’s plan

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder on Thursday proposed a dramatic restructuring of Detroit’s public school system, which remains financially and academically troubled despite years of state over-

stand in the Los Angeles suburb of Compton that followed an argument on the set of a commercial for the film “Straight Outta Compton.” Knight is accused of deliberately running over Terry Carter, 55, who later died, and another man with his pickup truck. Fletcher asked Judge Ronald Coen on Thursday to reduce his client’s bail amount, saying “$10 million is remarkably high,” but Coen declined. Two weeks earlier, when he ruled that there was enough evidence to proceed with a trial in the case, Coen had reduced Knight’s bail from $25 million to $10 million. REUTERS

A preliminary probe has found no evidence that 25-year-old Freddie Gray was fatally injured during his videotaped arrest in Baltimore, a local ABC affiliate reported on Thursday, citing sources briefed on the police report and on findings made by the medical examiner. The medical examiner found Gray’s catastrophic injury was caused when he was slammed into the back of the police transport van and apparently broke his neck. Law enforcement sources also said

‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ (out now) Type: Sequel The gang’s all here in the first sequel to the sixth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, plus many more besides, including twin mutants (Elizabeth Olsen and Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and a certain mystery guest from “Freaks and Geeks.” Indeed, it has enough movie for an entire summer of movies.

MARVEL

THE FUN STARTS HERE

Summer Movie Preview: Everything old is new again MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge matt.prigge@metro.us

This is the time of year when brains are turned off, rebuilding for the fall, when they will once again be overused. Luckily, Hollywood has your back. Starting with the sequel “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” out today, many of this summer’s blockbusters boast numbers or new secondary titles, and even the original films tend to be mash-ups of proven entities. But hey, at least there are zero Adam Sandler films!

‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ (May 15) Type: Sequel/secret reboot Behold, the first “Mad Max” entry in 30 years, 25 of which it spent in development hell. For many reasons, Mel Gibson is now Tom Hardy, but director George Miller — who had to make a couple “Happy WARNER BROS. ENTERTAINMENT INC.

Feet” films to get this made — is the same, meaning we’ll be once again treated to a singularly kinetic/insane twist on the action movie.

‘The Human Centipede 3 (Final Sequence)’ (May 22) Type: Threequel OK, so we actually like this vomit-y franchise, even the mega-unpleasant second one, which took the comparatively restrained first in a hilariously nasty direction. Here, both the original’s mad scientist (Dieter Laser) and the second’s porcine fanboy (Laurence R. Harvey) return and this time try to fix a disorderly prison by using the title premise as punishment for mischievous inmates. Actually, that should do it.

‘Entourage’ (June 3) Type: The show is now the movie Apparently, this was a televisual program that ran for a number of seasons. It is no longer on the air, therefore a follow-up will be beamed into movie theaters via digital projectors. So there’s that. Enjoy, if this is your thing. And if it isn’t, and you have to see it anyway, maybe it won’t make you yearn for death?

‘Jurassic World’ (June 12) Type: Sequel/quasi-reboot Don’t lie: When you saw the indie

Channing Tatum number will be more of the same or another “Staying Alive,” the Sylvester Stallone-directed ridiculous (and fascinating) post-disco sequel to “Saturday Night Fever.” But take heed: Steven Soderbergh may not be directing, but he did serve as cinematographer and chose as director a protege, Gregory Jacobs. And any film that encourages Tatum to be silly is never bad.

‘Poltergeist’ (May 22) Type: Remake On the list of movies that needn’t be remade goes this 1982 creeper, no less because its key image — television fuzz — doesn’t even exist anymore. No matter: The cast is a critic’s dream, with Rosemarie DeWitt, Sam Rockwell and Jane Adams(!), and director Gil Kenan, of the sharp “Monster House,” knows how to do more than boo scares.

‘Ted 2’ (June 26)

TWENTIETH CENTURY FOX

time-travel rom-com “Safety Not Guaranteed,” your main takeaway was, “The guy who directed this should make a movie about killer dinosaurs.” Either way, Colin Trevorrow took the reins of this 20-yearslater fourquel, in which humanity has forgotten the lessons of the original three, namely that dinos and humans don’t mix — unless one of those humans is a weirdly ripped Chris Pratt.

‘Terminator: Genisys’ (July 1) Type: Sequel No one much liked “Terminator: Salvation,” but, to borrow a line from another summer franchise, life finds

a way. The fifth entry pits Ah-nuld, Emilia Clarke and Jai Courtney against a robo-John Connor (Jason Clarke) as well as a digitally younger Ah-nuld. Does this even make time machiney sense? Or are they just trying to milk more out of a barren series? Either way, the series, like the old T-1000, can’t be stopped.

Type: Sequel After his misbegotten but noble “A Million Ways to Die in the West,” Seth MacFarlane UNIVERSAL PICTURES returned to normal duties, making this follow-up about Marky Mark and a talking plush bear. Amanda Seyfried has taken over for Mila Kunis, but we’ll just assume there will still be jokes about marijuana and ’80s pop culture.

(July 31)

‘Magic Mike XXL’ (July 1) Type: Sequel It’s not yet clear if the second stripper

‘Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation’

WARNER BROS. ENTERTAINMENT INC.

Type: Sequel The shape-shifting series winds up in the hands of Christopher McQuarrie, author of

“The Usual Suspects” and, perhaps more importantly, director of the enjoyably terse Tom Cruise vehicle “Jack Reacher.” There will be insane stunts where Cruise truly risked life and limb just to entertain us, but whatever happens, it will probably be almost nothing like the “Mission: Impossible” TV show.

‘Fantastic Four’ (August 7) Type: Straight-up reboot When the last batch of “Fantastic Four” movies emerged, it was a simpler time, when characters from comic books weren’t yet moody brooders out of a Thomas Hardy novel. Now with a new cast, two of them airlifted from last year’s horrific Zac Efron rom-com “That Awkward Moment,” we can learn the true anguish of being a guy who turns into fire and stuff.

‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon II: The Green Legend’ (August 28) Type: Belated sequel It only took 15 years — psst, you’re very old — but the sequel to the art-house ass-kicker is here, albeit with only Michelle Yeoh returning. This looks altogether more like traditional martial arts fare; instead of being directed by the tasteful Ang Lee, it’s handled by legend Yuen Wo-Ping, who made the early Jackie Chan greats “Drunken Master” and “Snake in the Eagle’s Shadow.”

The summer’s original ideas Sometimes Hollywood has unique ideas — or unique-ish. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

matt.prigge@metro.us

‘Tomorrowland’ (May 22) If “the theme park ride is now the movie” always sounded dodgy, what about the words “theme park section”? At least this one’s packed with overqualified talent, from George Clooney — as an inventor/dad journeying to an alternate world spiritually similar to the Disney World area — to filmmaker Brad Bird (“The Incredibles,” “Ratatouille”), although perhaps this one will be missing the director’s usual crypto-Objectivist subtext.

‘Aloha’ (May 29) In a way, this is a throwback to the old funny-earnest comedies of Cameron Crowe, who, “We Bought a Zoo” aside, has been in the dumps

since 2005’s sometimes misjudged (but sometimes spot-on) “Elizabethtown.” COLUMBIA PICTURES This time, he has the combined power of Bradley Cooper and Emma Stone, playing the staff of a Hawaii missile base overseeing a new weapons satellite. Oh, and they fall in love against sensitive dadrock hits, and of course the tagline is, “Sometimes you have to say goodbye before you can say hello.” So true! Or wait, what does that even mean?

‘Spy’ (June 5) Because no one else will make high-concept blockbuster comedies starring women, director Paul Feig (“Bridesmaids,” “The Heat”) is at it again, this time pairing Melissa McCarthy with Rose Byrne, but also with Jason Statham for some comedic action shenanigans. Sadly, the women may get upstaged by Statham, a gifted comedic actor rarely allowed to be funny outside of Guy Ritchie and “Crank” entries.

‘Inside Out’ (June 19) Remember when Pixar didn’t just crank out sequels? So do they, apparently, as they’ve taken a break from the likes of “Monsters University” and “Cars 2” to give us something original — or, you know, basically a cartoon version of “Herman’s Head,” with little characters representing emotions inside the mind of a little girl. Close enough!

‘Trainwreck’ (July 17) Amy Schumer hits the big screen but in a smart way, teaming up with Judd Apatow for a dirty rom-com. We’re excited because of Schumer, but we’re also excited because this was lensed

by great cinematographer (and, with “Ballet 422,” director) Jody Lee Lipes, who did up the likes of “Martha Marcy May Marlene,” “Afterschool” and the first season of “Girls.” Apatow’s films tend to look barely serviceable, but this should be a rare comedy that’s actually pleasant to look at.

‘Straight Outta Compton’ (August 14) You’re not a god until you have a splashy biopic. So congrats, N.W.A! Better yet, their story is pretty crazy, so even if this is a stuffy genre entry, it will at least be one that features hairpin plot turns in addition to some of the best music of the late 1980s and early 1990s.

‘Ant-Man’ (July 17) The definition of “original-ish,” this Marvel movie promises to be an outlier — or at least it would have been had Edgar Wright not walked off the project at the last second, suggesting that the company was into being eccentric but, you know, not actually eccentric. Still, this is a mostly (or kind of) comedic entry, starring Paul Rudd and co-written by Adam McKay, that we’re assuming will still build to an endless and clanky action super-climax before 10 post-credits sequences touting characters you’ve never heard of. “Ant-Man” MARVEL

Black Widow did not do her own stunts “I don’t think you’re allowed to ride a motorcycle when you’re still pregnant,” Scarlett Johansson says. “I embarrassingly rode some sort of a mechanical bull type of motorcycle which goes nowhere and doesn’t look cool at all. But we had some very professional motocross work being done that makes Black Widow look like a total badass.”

Iron Man didn’t do any meddling According to franchise star and Iron Man himself Robert Downey Jr., he didn’t have to do any meddling with the script this time around. “I read [Joss Whedon’s] script. I said, ‘I think this is great.’ [Marvel honcho] Kevin [Feige] said, ‘You never say that. You can’t mean that,’” Downey recalls. “I thought it was a Swiss watch to begin with.”

Avengers assemble! Again! ALL PHOTOS PROVIDED BY MARVEL ENTERTAINMENT

There are secrets the cast can’t divulge Mark Ruffalo, who stars as the Hulk, says their studio bosses have ways of making them not reveal spoilers. “You know, we have a Marvel app on our iPhones, and if you say something wrong, it literally shocks you,” he says. OK, maybe they don’t really, but we wouldn’t put it past them. Speaking of secrets …

James Spader got a crash course in Marvel moviemaking The “Blacklist” star embodies the chillingly evil robot Ultron, bent on destroying the Avengers — and humanity in general. And he barely had any time to get into character. “I really didn’t have any idea what was happening at all. I really was just trying to hold on and stay on the train that was moving very, very quickly,” Spader says.

Hawkeye speaks! Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye didn’t get a whole ton of screen time in the first “Avengers.” This time was different. “I speak in this movie, which is awesome,” Renner jokes. “I understood Hawkeye in the sense of he’s a human, just with a high skill set. So I could tap into that, and I feel like I got to explore a little bit more of that, even outside the skill set. I thought that was a really, really endearing and thoughtful sort of secret that he had.”

Kristen Wiig almost gets her own totally weird character movie MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge matt.prigge@metro.us

Kristen Wiig plays Alice Klieg, a mentally ill woman who wins the lottery then proceeds to use her newfound millions to force a small television station to give her her own TV show, which she describes as “Oprah but with swans, though it also involves cooking “meatloaf cakes, airing therapy, standing around wordless for minutes on end and talking about everyone who wronged her. The lowdown: “Welcome to Me isn’t a “Saturday Night

Live spinoff, but it almost feels like one. It’s a chance for Wiig to take the type of characters she specialized in on the show — painfully awkward grotesques, powerfully oblivious to the discomfort and sometimes even misery they create for others — and see what it would be like for them to exist in a featurelength movie. There are arguably too many shots of the other cast members staring, heads propped forward, jaws dropped, at Wiig doing, saying or occasionally screaming weird things, though it has a bigger problem. Comedies like this always need to turn

serious. Sure enough, a sadder film keeps threatening to take over. It’s a mighty fight, though, as “Welcome and especially Wiig remain weird, never fully giving into the melancholy. There’s a superinsane film inside “Welcome to Me, one that, as it happens, takes up about 80 percent of the picture. What’s another 20 percent?

More parents need to step in and prevent riots and violence

Absent fathers breed violent children

Baltimore police officers with rocks. It is times like this that parents need to take the upper hand and put boundaries and curfews for their children. Children and teens stay out of trouble when parents are involved. Like a saying that is posted on one of our TV stations that has been said for years, “It is 10 p.m. Do you know where your children are?” And to Toya Graham, I say, “KUDOS for being concerned for your son and doing the right thing!”

Let me applaud the super mom in Baltimore named Toya Graham for stepping up to the plate and slapping her son Michael and taking him home during the violence in Baltimore. Her 16-year-old son would have been hurt, and he intended to hurt more

The tragic death of Freddie Gray needs to be investigated by Attorney General Lynch’s office. If the police are responsible for Mr. Gray’s death, then they should be charged accordingly. But you can’t blame the police because half of the students in Baltimore didn’t finish high school. The culture needs to change, and education needs to be a priority. If you father a child then you

need to pick up that responsibility and be there, period. No excuses. Your job is to raise your child, not the government’s. Absentee fathers can no longer be tolerated. Singleparent households are difficult for everyone involved and can lead to despair and hopelessness. When this occurs, gangs become the new family. JOHN MCLAUGHLIN, VIA EMAIL

All the makings of a pure classic Boxing. Mayweather vs. Pacquiao is a throwback event. After nearly five years of negotiations, Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao, the two best fighters in the world and the sport’s two biggest stars, will finally go head-to-head in the ring on Saturday (9 p.m., PPV). Why is this fight such a big deal? Many experts agree that the encounter between Mayweather and Pacquiao is the most important fight in recent years. “Floyd has won world titles in five different weight classes, while Manny Pacquiao has also won titles in multi divisions and has earned the accolade of all time great. Many are referring to the richest boxing match in history as a megafight,” James Blears, editor of the World Boxing Council’s website, told Metro. Another reason that makes the bout so popular and compelling is the difference between the boxers’ personalities. Norm Whitehurst, coordinating producer for ESPN explains that Floyd is the brash, multimultimillionaire who burns $100 bills for fun and flaunts his money with exotic car col-

lections and private jets, whilst Manny is the quiet spoken, always smiling Filipino congressman who may very well be president of his country someday. He adds: “You have two clashing personalities that people fall behind. So the fan bases of both fighters, both hardcore fans and new fans, are very pas-

sionate.” Mark Butcher, editor of Boxing Monthly Online, is in the minority, thinking this is the best time for Mayweather and Pacquiao. “The Filipino has rebuilt his career and, with Mayweather’s incredible reflexes dulling with age, there is a strong argument that this fight will be more competitive than had they fought at their respective peaks in 2010,” Butcher explained. 2015 Kentucky Derby

The horses you should wager on this weekend Twenty horses will line up in the gate at Churchill Downs for the 141st running of the Kentucky Derby Saturday (6:30 p.m., NBC). There’s a lot of money to be made if you bet the right way, but ďŹ rst you have to pick the right horses. Here are the best bets for this year’s “run for the roses.â€? Dortmund (Post position: 8,

Morning-line odds: 3-1) There’s a lot to like about this colt sired by 2008 Kentucky Derby winner Big Brown. Dortmund is undefeated in six lifetime starts, including wins in the San Felipe Stakes and Santa Anita Derby at Santa Anita Park in California. He’s trained by one of the best in the game in Bob Baert (who has three Derby wins to his credit), and will be ridden by an elite jockey in Martin Garcia. But because he has such strong credentials his post-time odds are likely to be less than salivating.
