Rev. Shaun O. Harrison and three other men were arraigned in Suffolk Superior Court on Wednesday morning in connection with an execution-style shooting on March 3. He is being held on $400,000 bail. Harrison, 55, a popular dean at English High School in Jamaica Plain, was a vocal anti-gang activist who strongly supported the city’s gun-buyback programs, is said to have lured a 17-year-

evening of the shooting. Other text messages included pictures of marijuana and guns. While Harrison was being interviewed, police observed three men leave his apartment. They were detained, charged and arraigned as well. After obtaining a warrant, police found a rifle, a shotgun, ammunition and a large amount of packaged marijuana. They also recovered clothing matching the attire seen in the surveillance video, including a jacket and a pair of gloves, which tested positive for gunshot residue. Police also reported finding a large Latin Kings mural painted on the inside of Harrison’s home. Harrison and the other men observed were noted to have “100” tattooed to them

Boston Mayor Marty Walsh took to the podium yesterday during the IDeAS: Innovative Design Alternatives Summit at Faneuil Hall. / NICOLAUS CZARNECKI, METRO

Where do you see yourself in 15 years? Mayor Marty Walsh asked the same question to Boston residents Wednesday at the Innovative Design Alternatives Summit, where he kicked off the first citywide planning process in 50 years. Imagine Boston 2030, a two-year public engagement effort, aims to carve out a roadmap to make a more perfect city in time for the city’s 400th anniversary. “It’s been 50 years since we had a comprehensive plan for Boston,” Walsh said in a video message filmed on top of the Ferdinand Building in Dudley Square. “In 1965, people were looking for the confidence to believe that the city’s decline had ended. Today we’re a thriving, healthy and innovative

city. Now is our chance to set the course for the next generation. I’m inviting you to join us in imagining the Boston of 2030. From economic development to open space, from education to equality, your voice is the key to our success.” With the city’s economy, population and development growing, Walsh aims to jump-start the conversation on enhancing design and architecture in town through a public forum at Imagine.Boston.gov. “We don’t just want to grow bigger,” Walsh said. “We want to grow smarter, more resilient and we want to grow more equitably across the city. We need to make sure that while opportunity continues to grow, it needs to be shared. This

Bomber volunteered as family fell apart Testimony. More witnesses are speaking on behalf of the convicted Boston Marathon bomber. Lawyers seeking to spare convicted Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev from the death penalty called witnesses on Wednesday who described his volunteer work with disabled children, his adoration of his older brother and his father’s mental illness. Tsarnaev, 21, was found guilty last month of all charges related to the 2013 terror attack. Defense lawyers want life in prison without possibility of parole rather than death for Tsarnaev, claiming that he wouldn’t have bombed the marathon had it not been for his radical older brother, 26-year-old Tamerlan, who was killed after a gunfight

with police days after the bombing. A longtime friend of Tsarnaev’s family on Wednesday told the jury that Dzhokhar was a studious youth and adored Tamerlan, who had begun to cultivate a deep interest in Islam, politics and conspiracy theories. “Anytime Tamerlan would say ‘Let’s do this or that,’ he would always go along. He

would be a good younger brother, I would say,” Elmirza Khozhugov told jurors via a remote video feed from Kazakhstan in Central Asia. Khozhugov said Tamerlan started to change after an Armenian man named Misha began visiting the Tsarnaev family home in Cambridge to talk to him about Islam and politics. “Conspiracy theories. He was getting into that a lot,” Khozhugov said. At one point, Tamerlan gave up his favorite pastime, boxing, because Misha had told him that “in Islam hitting people on the head is not a good thing.” Tsarnaev volunteered in a program to help children with disabilities at the Winchester Public Schools, according to the program’s leader Jennifer Callison. “He was kind, he was respectful, he came to every event,” Callison told the jury. Asked if she could have imagined Tsarnaev would bomb the marathon, she replied, “No.” REUTERS

Citing a “substantial uptick” in bomb threats called into state schools, State Fire Marshal Stephen Coan wants lawmakers to require educators to immediately notify public safety officials when they receive such calls. In the “vast majority” of cases, schools reach out to public safety officials, Coan said. “But there is a gap,” Between September 2013 and June 2014, there were 38 calls to respond to schools for bomb threats, the Department of Fire Services reports. Between September 2014 and April 2015, there were 62 calls. “What we’re really trying to do is build strong communication links,” Coan said. The state police bomb squad is the primary responder to bomb threats or suspicious packages. SHNS

Germanwings pilot rehearsed crash on outbound flight

MOTHER'S DAY IS MAY 10

The BEA will issue a final report in about a year that may include recommendations on cockpit doors and the handling of pilots’ medical records by the airline industry. / GETTY IMAGES

Co-pilot. Andreas Lubitz was in charge of flying the plane on the return leg, a routine practice that builds up experience. The Germanwings co-pilot suspected of deliberately crashing a jet in the French Alps rehearsed the fatal maneuver on the morning of the disaster, and had twice been refused medical papers needed to fly, investigators said on Wednesday.

The French BEA accident investigation agency said the co-pilot had five times set the autopilot to take the Airbus down to just 100 feet while the captain was out of the cockpit on the outbound flight to Barcelona from Dusseldorf. But the brief twists of an altitude dial, mimicking those which crashed the A320 on its way back to the German city 2-3 hours later, would not have been noticed by passengers or controllers because they were quickly reversed and were masked by the fact that the jet had already started an authorized descent, the BEA said. A preliminary report

on the return flight that crashed on March 24, killing all 150 people on board, confirmed a growing picture of painstaking preparations carried out by the co-pilot, Andreas Lubitz. “I can’t speculate on what was happening inside his head; all I can say is that he changed this button to the minimum setting of 100 feet and he did it several times,” said Remi Jouty, director of the French BEA accident investigation agency. “These very brief actions on the previous flight were a sort of rehearsal of the maneuver,” he said. Flight 9525 Digging into data and cockpit recordings recovered from the jet’s “black boxes,” the BEA gave the most detailed picture so far on what happened in the cockpit •

Shortly after the A320 reached cruise height, the captain told Lubitz he was leaving the cockpit and asked him to take over the radio, the BEA said. No reason was given, but Jouty noted it is normal for pilots to leave the cockpit to go to the toilet, for example. Just over 30 seconds after the door closed, leaving Lubitz alone in the cockpit for the

second time that day, he entered the instruction he had rehearsed. •

By turning a dial, he ordered the plane’s autopilot to descend to 100 feet, the BEA said. This was the lowest setting possible and enough to crash into mountains ahead. He then altered another dial to speed the jet up. The report listed numerous warnings that went unanswered as the jet sped lower. These included four attempts to reach him from outside the cockpit by interphone and a crescendo of calls and knocks

that ended with “violent blows” on the door. •

As the jet steadily lost height, Marseille air traffic controllers tried 11 times to contact the Germanwings jet.

Just over two minutes before the crash the French military weighed in, trying three times to contact the crew on an emergency frequency, followed by a call from another plane.

Finally, the aircraft’s groundproximity warning system kicked into life, urging the co-pilot to “pull up.”

SpaceX puts passenger spaceship through test run A Space Exploration Technologies’ passenger spaceship made a quick debut test flight on Wednesday, shooting itself off a Florida launch pad to demonstrate a key emergency escape system. The 20-foot-tall Dragon capsule, a modified version of the spacecraft that flies

cargo to the International Space Station, fired up its eight side-mounted thruster engines at 9 a.m. to catapult itself nearly one mile above the Atlantic Ocean. The flight ended less than two minutes later with the capsule’s parachute splashdown about 1.4 miles east of the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station launch site. The purpose of the test was to demonstrate an escape system to carry the capsule

to safety in case of a fire or accident during launch. SpaceX plans to refly the capsule later this year aboard a Falcon 9 rocket to test an abort maneuver at supersonic speed and high altitude. “Essentially, it’s kind of like an ejection seat in an airplane. You have the ability to leave the pad sitting in the capsule, and the capsule would come off and land,” NASA astronaut Eric Boe said during an interview on NASA TV. REUTERS

California might shore up water supplies for drought Seawater. Desalination plants are designed to make seawater drinkable. California water regulators on Wednesday adopted a new uniform permitting process for ocean desalination projects that are expected to expand in number as the drought-stricken state increasingly turns to the sea to supplement its drinking supplies. The desalination rules, which put some decisions for such plants in the hands of statewide regulators rather than local water boards, come a day after the state demanded sweeping cutbacks in water use by cities and towns. The desalination plan enacted by the State Water Resources Control Board on Wednesday, sets up a uniform permitting process for plants built to reclaim seawater and also limit the amount of salt that the facilities would be allowed to release back into the sea. California’s drought has thrust seawater desalination into the spotlight as San Diego County, Santa Barbara and other cities push ahead with treatment plants that will turn the Pacific Ocean into a source of drinking water. Seawater desalination developer Poseidon has a second seawater desalting project of similar size under development

On Tuesday, the State Water Resources Control Board enacted California’s first rules for mandatory statewide cutbacks in water use. The emergency regulations, which require some communities to trim water use by as much as 36 percent, were approved unanimously just weeks after Democratic Governor Jerry Brown stood in a dry mountain meadow and ordered statewide rationing. Meanwhile, the city of Santa Barbara is taking steps to modernize and reactivate a smaller $34 million desalination plant built during an earlier drought but moth-balled after a trial run in 1992, when that water crisis abated. Speakers described Goldberg’s self-deprecation, modesty and selflessness, and the event, closed to the

On their way out, guests were offered Minnesota Vikings baseball caps as a reminder of the Minneapolisborn Goldberg’s lighthearted nature and love of sports, according to a person who attended the service and who declined to be identified. Also on hand were playing cards stamped with his initials and poker chips. During the ceremony, U2’s Bono sang “One,” the Irish rock band’s anthem to love and support. Many began offering personal tributes to Goldberg on social media on Saturday, including Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg. Gray’s death became the latest flashpoint in a national outcry over police killings of unarmed black men and other minority groups in the United States, and provoked weeks of largely peaceful protests in the city punctuated by a day of arson and looting on April 27. Last Friday, Baltimore’s chief prosecutor announced charges against all six police officers involved in Gray’s arrest, ranging from misconduct in office to second-degree murder. REUTERS

School districts in Oklahoma would be able to designate an employee to carry handguns on school property under a bill approved by the state Senate and sent to Gov. Mary Fallin. Backers said the measure that easily passed in the Republican-dominated legislature would promote school safety while opponents said having the firearms on campus could put students and teachers in danger. Fallin’s office was not available for comment on whether the Republican governor would sign the bill into law. REUTERS

EU seeks UN approval to seize migrant boats United Nations. About 1,800 migrants have perished during the crossing already this year. Europe is seeking United Nations Security Council approval to seize boats used to traffic migrants across the Mediterranean from Libya, though diplomats said Russia has signaled it would not allow destruction of the vessels. European Union leaders agreed last month to “identify, capture and destroy vessels before they are used by traffickers, but it is unclear how that may be achieved and the 28-nation bloc wants U.N. authorization for its operation. U.N. diplomats, speaking on condition of anonymity, said a resolution has been drafted by European members of the Security Council — Britain, France, Lithuania and Spain — under Chapter 7 of the U.N. Charter which al-

lows the use of force. The draft text would authorize the EU to intervene on the high seas, in Libyan territorial waters and onshore in Libya to seize vessels “to prevent trafficking, smuggling and illegal migration across the Mediterranean, said a senior U.N. diplomat. Diplomats said Russia, which has veto power on the Security Council, initially appeared supportive of the measures, but drew the line at approving destruction of boats. The Russian U.N. mission was not immediately available for comment. EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini is due to brief the U.N. Security Council behind closed doors on Monday on the proposed operations.

Justin Bieber has found a surprising ally in Lady Gaga. The two pop stars spent some time together at the Met Gala earlier this week and took a few selfies — one of which Gaga herself posted recently along with a lengthy caption coming to the troubled Canadian wunderkind’s defense. “He really has a sweetness to him,” she writes. “He grew up in front of the whole world. I reminded him to not get bothered. Because at the end of the day, he’s the boss, and life isn’t always roses. Lots of thorns.” OK, so maybe that was actually a veiled threat, who knows. And while Gaga has always had a knack for seeing the world differently than others, I’m having trouble buying this whole Bieber being “sweet” thing.

Like many fans, we’ve been impressed with how smoothly the One Direction split seemed to be going — Zayn Malik and the rest of the boys all said and did the right things and actually seemed quite mature for their ages. Until yesterday, that is. Twitter blew up as Malik, his producer Naughty Boy and One Directioner Louis Tomlinson began trading veiled and not-so-veiled tweets about Malik’s split from the superstar band. It all began when Naughty Boy tweeted what appeared to be a Mac Photobooth picture of himself and Zayn Malik with the text “Replace this.”

Tomlinson tweeted a vague tweet several hours later saying, “Remember when you were 12 and you used to think those Mac filters for your pictures were cool haha! Some people still do HA!” This tweet may or may not have been directed at Naughty Boy, but Malik certainly perceived it to be as he later tweeted directly at Tomlinson saying, “Remember when you had a life and stopped making b—y comments about mine?” Shots fired! Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin aren’t too old to party Interview. The “Grace and Frankie stars take on Netflix. Jane Fonda has taken peyote. The 77-year-old actress, activist and fitness guru isn’t being shy about the practical experience she’s brought to “Grace and Frankie, the Netflix series she stars in alongside Lily Tomlin. “Among other things, she says matter-of-factly. “It makes me throw up, just like the show says. It’s good to mix it with mushrooms. Doing hallucinogens is one thing, but doing television? That’s not something Fonda could’ve fathomed until a few years ago when she signed on for Aaron Sorkin’s “The Newsroom on HBO. “When I started in movies in the late ’50s, early ’60s, you never would do television. People who did television never made movies, and if you possibly could make movies, you never would do television, Fonda says. “It wasn’t until about seven or eight years ago that I realized I really wanted to do television, and I wanted to give a cultural face to an older woman. So when this came along, it was a dream come true. It was also a chance to work with her “Nine to Five co-star and longtime pal Tomlin again, something that — at least according to Tomlin — has long been a priority. “I’d always tell my agent, or my partner and I might be trying to develop something that has to do with older people, Tomlin says. “When my agent called me and told me, ‘Are you really trying to do some-

thing with Jane?’ I said, ‘Yeah, sure. I’d like to.’ And then he brought [‘Friends’ co-creator] Marta [Kauffman] to us, and she gave us the notion of her idea, and after that, we jumped in with both feet. That idea, by the way, is a doozy. Grace (Fonda) and Frankie (Tomlin) are two very different women who’ve maintained a tenuous friendship because their husbands (Martin Sheen and Sam Waterston) are law partners. But when the husbands announce that they’re both gay and are

running off together, Grace and Frankie are left with each other to help pick up the pieces. So how do two women go decades with the same men not realizing something is amiss? Tomlin explains, “Like I say in that speech on the beach, ‘I suspected things. I thought something was up, but‌’â€? And then Fonda interrupts her: “When he asked you to use the dildo? It’s called denial.â€? A big selling point for both stars, aside from getting to work together again, was

the image the series projects of women of a certain age. “We both get enough scripts to know that when you’re an older woman, you tend to be the butt of a joke, Fonda says. Tomlin elaborates: “I always resented that. I didn’t like that. If a woman didn’t have autonomy, if she was somebody’s grandmother, and they made her into a doddering little old lady who just puts up with stuff and kind of was vague, that just rubs me the wrong way — unless a very artful hand was on that depiction, and then I might have to look at it another way or something. But that usually

doesn’t happen. But back to the peyote. Tomlin, for one, wants to assure everyone that while she and Fonda may have personal experience to draw on, they’re no Method actresses. “We had to kind of project into that experience, she says of the drugged-out beach scene in the first episode. “No matter how much experience we’ve had, it’s not like we actually are eating peyote at that moment. NED EHRBAR @Nedrick ned.ehrbar@metro.us

Abigail Breslin is the walking dead Interview. The Oscar nominee talks about laughing through making the grim zombie drama “Maggie.” Abigail Breslin, star of “Zombieland,” is no stranger to the undead. But “Maggie” is different. It’s not a horror film but an intense drama with Breslin as a teen slowly turning into a zombie, all while being watched over by her parents, played by Joely Richardson and one Arnold Schwarzenegger. Not that she let a sad tale get her down. This is a pretty grim film.

Ah-nuld

He’ll be back How was Schwarzenegger? I grew up with brothers, so Arnold Schwarzenegger was big in my house. I don’t like to have preconceived notions before I meet icons, but there’s no way you’re not going to think, “I’m going to meet the Terminator.” But he’s so sweet and so warm How did you all keep your spirits up? You end up having more fun, I think, on serious movies because you know it’s going to be intense, so you try to have as much fun as you can. Those scenes where we’re

and so generous, as an actor and as a person. When he’s complimented, he’ll always find a way to turn it around so he’s actually complimenting someone else. I did have one cool moment with him: When he was leaving to go back to his trailer, he said, “I’ll be back.” He was just saying it normally, but for me, it was such a moment.

really serious and emotional, we’d be cracking up. There’s one scene with Joely Richardson [where] we just couldn’t stop laughing. I was surprised they could find takes where we weren’t laughing or smiling.

This is more a drama than a horror film, but you’ve said horror is a favorite genre of yours. I’m one of those obnoxious horror fans who will go to the movies and really get super into it and then have full-blown arguments and conversations about it after. When I got the script for this, I just thought it was a zombie horror. And it wasn’t what I expected. It’s a human movie that just happens to deal with zombie-like creatures. I don’t even see it as a zombie movie. It’s more about being sick and isolated. Getting to wear zombie makeup, though, was a real bonus. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

Linda Cardellini won’t crack up

FILM

536 Lebanon St, Melrose, Ma.

There are a lot of characters horrified by the bizarre things Kristen Wiig’s Alice does in the comedy “Welcome to Me. But one who’s not horrified is her best friend Gina, played by Linda Cardellini. The “Freaks and Geeks star — currently on Netflix’s “Bloodline and, briefly, in “Avengers: Age of Ultron — liked the way Gina made Alice and the film around her seem slightly more serious.

Linda Cardellini, far right, plays the best friend of Kristen Wiig’s lottery winner in “Welcome to Me. SUZANNE HANOVER

Playing the straight man to very funny people can be very diďŹƒcult, one imagines. Was it hard not to crack up and ruin takes? Sometimes! It could be hard to keep a straight face. We did a 15-minute improv where she hides in the bathroom, and we just kept going back and forth, back and forth. But [Alice] is so heartbreaking. I don’t think the audience is

ever laughing at this woman with mental illness. You’re laughing with her at certain times and feeling terrified and bad for her at others. Gina plays an important role in grounding the movie, showing that Alice isn’t just a loner but someone with real relationships. The relationship between Alice and Gina is really fun. It’s like this platonic romantic comedy between the two of them. They come together and fall apart. I loved the way I was able to add meaning to the story for her. What kind of backstory was worked out for them? We imagined that her mental illness didn’t totally surface until she was a little bit older. There’s a part of Alice that Gina knows that no one else really does, except for her family. That comes from being friends since they were little kids. They love each other very much. There’s a part of Gina that admires the bravery that Alice clearly has. Mental illness can be a tricky subject to deal with in any ďŹ lm. I was drawn to the idea that mental illness is hard for someone who has mental illness, but it’s also difficult for

the people who are there for them. It’s hard to watch somebody go through something or be destructive toward themselves. The people who love them have a difficult time with that because it’s hard to watch them be hurt or hurt themselves. [The film] doesn’t treat it as this quirky little problem. There’s a fine line. The two tones are really intertwined here. That’s something I really liked about “Freaks and Geeks, that you can take something that’s serious and painful and show it in a way that people can relate to in a real way but also in a way that people can laugh at it. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge matt.prigge@ metro.us

One more thing

In other news You actually suddenly pop up in “Avengers: Age of Ultron. Were you under lock and key not to reveal that? Yeah. I didn’t even tell my parents and my family. Then it leaked on the Internet that I was somehow in it. I got a lot of heat for that from them. [Laughs]

LINDA CARDELLINI GETTY IMAGES

I imagine you were probably used to keeping secrets from your stint on “Mad Men, where Matthew Weiner was adamant about people not revealing spoilers. I don’t like spoilers either. After I was done with the show, I was invited to be in the table reads. I would politely decline. I just love that show. I prefer to have things surprise me.

In thinking about this week’s topic, a wave of exhaustion fell over me. Here I was thinking I’d be talking about “May the 4th be with you” and the incredible “Star Wars” memories I heard all day. Except that, when I woke up this morning, I read about Joss Whedon being driven off Twitter by death threats and harassment because of a scene in “Avengers: Age of Ultron” where Black Widow discusses wanting to have a baby and feeling like a monster because she can’t. If you guys have been following my column, you know that I’m pretty sensitive to these things. Personally, I forgot that scene was even in the film. I have some serious issues with the lack of women in the Marvel Cinematic Universe: the fact that Black Widow toys are virtually absent from the market and definitely with certain leaked emails that indicate certain studio executives don’t think women belong in superhero films. I groaned audibly when the “prima nocta” joke was made. Certainly not funny, and definitely offensive. All of that said, the Babygate scene didn’t register. I kind of thought she was talking about the whole assassin thing making her a

monster. I absolutely get the annoying need to take the few female characters we have and either hook them up or give them babies. It speaks to a larger issue in the movie world. That said, some people like to be in love and have babies. Still, I totally get the issues with the scene, even if I don’t personally have them. The thing that upsets me here is, once again, the online bullying. Having been the victim of it, repeatedly, I can tell you exactly what it does to you. It makes you

jumpy. It makes you consider security cameras in your home. It makes you wonder why you do what you do for a living. Whether you argue that Joss Whedon has been a great ally for women or have issues with his choices, it’s certainly open for discussion. Discussion, not threats. I’m saying all of this because sometimes reading one thing can really affect you. Please just remember that there are actual people on the other side of your tweets. Just knock it off already.

Ciara: ‘There ain’t nothing I can’t do’

richard.peckett@metro.lu

It has been a productive but turbulent past year for Ciara. First, the R&B singer gave birth to son Future Zahir Wilburn in May of last year, broke off her engagement to the baby’s father and rapper Future following rumors of infidelity, started on her new album “Jackie” just a matter of weeks before her due date and is appearing on the NBC variety show “I Can Do That.” Clearly, the 29-year-old, who’s about to embark on her first tour in six years, has got the motherly multitasking down. Her record, as she explains to us, reflects her post-baby “empowerment.” Your album has a track called “Jackie (B.M.F.)” (bad motherf—er). What makes you a bad motherf—er? I love this song. It was so funny; I went into the studio and just felt it was so heavy on my chest to just scream, “I’m a bad mother…” Of course, I was inspired having my son, and I was just thinking, there ain’t nothing I can’t do. I feel like I can conquer the world. When I think about my journey and everything that I’ve experienced personally and professionally, I feel so strong and empowered, especially after having a child. You’re known for your sensual and raunchy dancing in tracks like “Love

Philadelphia’s Hop Along are a Saddle Creek Records band still keeping alive the emo-tinged indie pop of the ’00s, at times sounding like a punkier Rilo Kiley, but basically just doing their own awesome thing, an irresistible mix of pop melody and noisy guitars rooted in the expressive vocals and complex lyrical tales of frontwoman Frances Quinlan.

The musically-inclined poet Saul Williams is probably best known for his 2004 aggro avant-rap hit “List of Demands (Reparations),” but he’s more concerned with making statements than making hits. His latest album, “MartyrLoserKing,” is his first since 2011. That doesn’t mean he’s been on hiatus, though — the multi-talented Williams always stays busy with one project or another. Somerville’s annual dining festival returns, with even more restaurants to sample. LISA WEIDENFELD @LisaWeidenfeld lisa.weidenfeld@metro.us

Somerville’s status as a foodie hot spot has evolved to the point where picking a restaurant for dinner can be a profound inner struggle. Are you in the mood for German delicacies, Ă la Bronwyn? Tapas at La Brasa? Or maybe you’ve been craving the Indian food at Diva. If all of those options are giving you dinner choice anxiety, you’re in luck: All of those restaurants, and quite a few more, will be part of the 17th annual Taste of Somerville, returning June 3. “There’s really two driving forcesâ€? behind the festival, says Morgan Bigley, general

The festival benefits a charitable organization every year, with this year’s beneficiary being the Somerville Home. This is the second year the Taste has been outside (it’s at 50 Holland St. in Davis Square), and Bigley’s first as one of the organizers. “What I was excited about was getting all those really fresh, new faces in there alongside the restaurants that have been in Somerville for

years and years, he explains. Hence, you can grab a waffle from the Neighborhood Restaurant, and then head over to get a snack from Casa B. Though the area has plenty of neighborhoods with good food, Bigley thinks there are a few things that set Somerville apart. “My feeling about the Somerville restaurant community is that there’s really a lot of character and a lot of honesty. Somerville is a very community-driven city, despite its somewhat larger size. You really get a feeling of neighborhood and a feeling of commitment to the community from all these different businesses. Of course, the most important question is, how do you avoid filling up before you’ve tried it all? “It’s always hard because everything looks so good, Bigley says with a laugh. “My advice to everybody is don’t get caught up by that first table you see. Take a look, see if there’s any that you’ve been dying to try, and do a lap and see all the cool things Somerville has to offer. We tried to get details from Bigley about what Highland Kitchen will be serving up, but he swore they hadn’t decided yet. “We like to let people think we’re organized, but we’re usually trying to figure it out a couple days before.

Explore history in Valley Forge In the rolling countryside near Philadelphia, a ragtag collection of disorganized militias became a unified army that defeated the most powerful military in the world.

Made up of volunteers, George Washington’s army was undisciplined, unorganized, under-supplied and no match for the British. They barely survived defeats over the summer and fall. While the Redcoats retired to the warmth of Philadelphia for the winter, the Colonials huddled in

A bad look for Brady as NFL releases report NFL. Tom Brady looks like a liar after Pats employee texts are revealed. Not much can rattle Tom Brady. But No. 12 was the most nervous man in the greater Foxboro area back on Jan. 22. In a nationally broadcast press conference that day, Brady openly discussed how he likes his footballs on the lower side when it comes to air pressure. He also said that he had little interaction with Patriots employees who handle gameday balls. That at least appears to be untrue, based on this text exchange between Jim McNally (the Officials’ locker room attendant for the Patriots) and John Jastremski (equipment assistant for the Patriots), released in Wednesday’s Wells Report on “Deflategate”: McNally: “Tom Sucks … I’m going to make that next ball a f— balloon.” Jastremski: “Talked to him last night. He actually brought you up and said you must have a lot of stress trying to get them done … I told him it was. He was right though … I checked some of the balls this morning … The refs f— us … a few of them were at almost 16. (nearly OVER-inflated) They didn’t recheck them after

Deflating fallout What we learned Wednesday: •

A 243-page report by NFLappointed attorney Ted Wells said that it is “probable” that New England Patriots personnel deliberately deflated balls during the AFC Championship Game and that Tom Brady was probably “at least generally aware” of ball deflation.

The report said that Pats locker room attendant Jim McNally likely took game balls into a bathroom at Gillette and deflated balls.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the NFL is considering discipline for Brady, McNally and equipment assistant John Jastremski.

Contrary to earlier reports, the NFL found that there was no “deliberate” attempt by the Patriots to introduce a non-approved kicking ball in the AFC title game.

they put air in them.” McNally: “F— Tom … 16 is nothing ... wait till next Sunday.” Jastremski: “OMG! Spaz.”

This interaction occurred

after a game against the New York Jets in which Brady complained about air pressure. It’s quite obvious from that exchange that Brady knows exactly who McNally is and what he does. The issue with painting Brady as the true bad guy in this whole thing is that it’s not against the rules to prefer a football to have certain air pressure. And in the above conversation, it’s tough to judge exactly what Brady was complaining about. Were the balls too hard or too soft for his liking in the Jets game? Blowing up a ball to be a “balloon” could either mean that McNally’s going to blow it up to be the size of a balloon (equaling over-inflation) or he’s going to make the ball feel as light as a balloon (equaling under-inflation). The “16 is nothing” comment makes one think that McNally is going to go against Brady’s wishes and actually overinflate the balls in order to impress the refs. Either way, it’s clear that Brady cares (or cared) a good deal about air pressure. Does that make him a liar? Maybe. Does that make him 100 percent guilty for Deflategate and should he be suspended multiple games for the 2015 season? The league will soon decide. MATT BURKE @Burke_Metro sports@metro.us

NFL. Kraft rushes to slam report, defend Patriots

Robert Kraft issued a quick response to the Wells Report. / GETTY IMAGES

The Patriots and those close to the Patriots were obviously in defense mode yesterday in light of the Wells Report. Patriots owner Robert Kraft shredded the league’s findings, saying, “To say we are disappointed in its findings, which do not include any incontrovertible or hard evidence of deliberate deflation of footballs at the AFC Championship Game, would be a gross

understatement. … What is not highlighted in the text of the report is that three of the Colts’ four footballs measured by at least one official were under the required psi level. As far as we are aware, there is no comparable data available from any other game because, in the history of the NFL, psi levels of footballs have never been measured at halftime, in any climate.” MATT BURKE

Last year at this time, Mookie Betts was playing second base for the Portland Sea Dogs in Double-A. Now he’s doing something that hasn’t been done by a Red Sox player in over 40 years, not to mention playing center field. After shifting to the outfield in late May of last year and then making his major league debut on June 29 of last year, Betts is now the Red Sox’ starting center fielder and had the best game of his 78-game major league career Tuesday night. Betts’ two solo home runs were the only offense the Red Sox got against Tampa Bay, and the only offense they needed in a 2-0 win over the Rays. The two home runs in the same game, at 22-years and 210 days-old, made Betts the youngest Boston player to accomplish the feat since Jim Rice, who was also 22,

in 1975. Betts’ first home run in the sixth inning actually broke up Rays starter Drew Smyly’s no-hit bid. Coincidentally, Betts’ performance Tuesday came with Rice in attendance as the 1975 team was honored for their 40th anniversary. “I think we just needed a win,” said Betts. “But a win like this is huge because it’s a momentum thing. We can carry it into tomorrow and whoever is on the bump I’m sure is going to continue that and we’ll score a few more runs tomorrow.” While Betts may be a little modest putting the team first, manager John Farrell acknowledged Betts is a oneof-a-kind talent. “One heck of an athlete that — we’re seeing some special things in a short glimpse,” said Farrell. Through 26 games, Betts is hitting .234/.306/.411 with four home runs and 17 RBIs. Although the .234 average seems low, he’s deserved better, as he’s had a number of hard-hit balls that have gone for outs. Thinking back to the first week of the season, he crushed a few balls that would have been home runs in the middle of the summer, but went for outs then. “For what we saw from
