DEATH ON DELAY Death sentence. The Boston bomber’s fate has been decided — death by lethal injection — but when it will end for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is not so clear. An appeal is likely, and if that fails, it still could be decades before the 21-year-old is executed. PAGE 02

Tsarnaev case far from the finish line What’s next? Depending on the appeals process, the Boston bomber could be executed in two years or 20 years. A federal jury on Friday chose death by lethal injection for the Boston Marathon bomber, and though the decision brought closure to those affected by the devastating 2013 attack, the saga’s end is far from near. The jury’s decision doesn’t necessarily mean Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 21, will face imminent death. Defense attorneys will likely appeal the sentence, a process that can take years. Attorney Joe Serpa, a Boston criminal defense attorney for 20 years, said all American citizens sentenced to death receive an automatic appeal, which will be made before the First Circuit Court of Appeals. After the court’s decision, Tsarnaev will be able to appeal to the United States Supreme Court. “Depending on the appeals process, he could be executed as soon as two years from now all the way up to 20 years from now,” Serpa said. “He has the right to extend this process for at least a decade to come.” Tsarnaev is set to be put to

“I’m very conflicted. I’m not pro-death penalty and I think life in prison is its own special kind of torture, to put it lightly. He’s young and he’d be in there for a very long time. It makes me wonder if the death penalty is more of a way out.” Amelia Lowe,

death by lethal injection in the U.S. Penitentiary in Terre Haute, Indiana. It was here that Timothy McVeigh, the Oklahoma City bomber and perpetrator of the largest domestic terrorism attack, was put to death. But lethal injection as a practice is under the micro-

scope as the lingering question of whether or not the cocktail used to put the condemned down is constitutional is still a topic of debate. “There are several states that have put a moratorium on the death penalty due to questions regarding the 8th Amendment and whether or

not the lethal injection cocktail qualifies as cruel and unusual,” Serpa said. The death penalty is legal in 32 states, and illegal in 18 states. NATE HOMAN @MetroBOS

Morality. Concern over Tsarnaev’s martyr status After Friday’s verdict, an antideath penalty crowd made their presence known outside the Moakley Courthouse. “We’ve been out here since the beginning trying to put the perspective of war and peace into this matter,” said Veterans For Peace activist Al Johnson. “I don’t want to see anyone get the death penalty, innocent or guilty. Life without parole would have been the right thing. Let him dwell on the horrendous acts he did for 40 or 50 years.” The question of Tsarnaev becoming a martyr has been an issue throughout the trial and was one that Johnson was

“I think it’s the mindset of an angry mob. I think eye-for-aneye does not do a single thing to deter crime. I would have much rather seen him get life with no parole.” Sam Trevino, 28, Somerville “I think the death penalty is always wrong in a society where we live by rational law. I think this is vengeance, not justice.” Stan LeRoy, 45, Brighton

concerned with. “It doesn’t help us and it doesn’t help anyone for him to reach that status because we put him there,” Johnson said. While many residents of Bay State stand against the death penalty, there was no shortage of people believing that justice was served. On Boylston Street following Friday’s verdict announcement, a man with a camera and an intimate knowledge of death row weighed in. “I worked for years in a death row prison and I know why it’s there,” said Dave Thomas, 57, of Omaha, Nebraska. He worked as a

medical administrator in a maximum security prison in the Department of Corrections in Nebraska. While life without parole would have sat well with Thomas, he believed that the jury made the right call. “My feelings on the death penalty were complacent but I think in this case it was legitimate to rule the death penalty,” Thomas said. “They had 12 jurors that heard way more than we did. They didn’t take their decision lightly and I trust they made the right decision. I just hope he doesn’t become a hero or a martyr because of it.” METRO

Put to death A federal death sentence carried out is a rare event. •

Louis Jones Jr. was the last person put to death by the federal government in March of 2003.

Both Juan Raul Garza and Timothy McVeigh were put to death in June of 2001.

Prior to that, the federal government hadn’t carried out a death sentence since Victor Feguer was hung in 1963.

“I didn’t follow the trial much and I haven’t given the incident much thought. Overall, I think the death sentence is wrong. I disagree with it on principle. I guess life in prison would be better. But the whole system for me is really defunct.” Nick Detar-Koch, 33, Cambridge

“With a life sentence, I feel like people always say, ‘Well, we’re paying to keep this guy alive and fed,’ but he’s going to be in there for a long, long time. Money aside, I would rather watch someone learn from what they did if they could.” Shereen Salem, 22, Somerville

A disturbed MBTA passenger snapped a photograph Friday of what appears to be two people engaging in oral sex on a T platform and sent to it transit police on social media demanding action. “Dear MBTA, I understand you are having financial problems and it is difficult to maintain a broken system, however my tax dollars should be going to pay your police force because I shouldn’t have to stand next to a man receiving oral sex,” wrote the irate passenger. The incident allegedly happened around 7:30 p.m. at State Street station, according to authorities. Transit Police Lt. Richard Sullivan said the agency shares the woman’s disgust,

Gina Rodriguez’s awesome body image outlook

Alan Thicke is grossing everyone out, including his son

This should completely ruin any “Growing Pains” rerun viewings you had planned. Alan Thicke and wife Tanya Callau revealed to Us Weekly that they like to get it on to the music of Alan’s son, Robin Thicke. “When we do get freaky, we love [Robin’s song] ‘Sex Therapy,’” Callau explains. “You have to admit, it’s a great song to get in the mood.” And if you think you’re grossed out by that, imagine how Robin feels. Actually, you don’t have to, since the singer made his feelings on the subject perfectly clear. “Dad, I heard what you said,” he posted to Twitter. “I need you to give back all of my music. Immediately.” That’s no way to treat your biggest fan, Robin!

Cannes, y’all are being real negative

Matthew McConaughey’s latest work in director Gus Van Sant’s “Sea of Trees” was greeted by not-very-friendly boos and jeering during its debut screenings at the Cannes Film Festival, which would totally bum out most stars. But McConaughey isn’t most stars. The chilled Texan is taking the bad reviews in stride. “I liked the experience of making it and I’m glad we got the opportunity to introduce it to the world,” he said during the film’s press conference. “Anyone has any right to either boo or ovate.” All right, all right, all right?

“Jane the Virgin” star Gina Rodriguez continues to establish herself as a delightful, refreshing presence on the celebrity scene, and her latest comments about beauty are only adding to that. “I did not wake up like this,” she tells E! News of her red carpet looks. “But I do love what I look like when I do wake up in the morning. I have that balance to know that I’m comfortable in my skin the way God made me and then I’m also comfortable getting did and having fun and playing dress-up. It’s very exciting. But also, we create body image. We’re the ones who create. We decide. Just like we decide trends, just like we decide everything in this world.”

Get it, girl.

a formidable all-girl dodgeball team. And it did not end well. The lads gave it their all, but that just wasn’t enough. Maybe it’s Corden’s coaching methods, who knows. At least the tank tops offer a great look at how out-of-control their penchant for prison tattoos has gotten, so there’s that.

TELEVISION

A tale of two ‘Bachelorettes’ Interview. Britt Nilsson and Kaitlyn Bristowe talk about their unusual new season of “The Bachelorette.” The producers of “The Bachelor” and “The Bachelorette” turned the world of reality dating upside down this spring with a big change. Instead of just one woman being selected from the hopefuls on Chris Soules’ season of “The Bachelor” to lead “The Bachelorette,” they chose two, Britt Nilsson and Kaitlyn Bristowe. The two women will meet with the men of “The Bachelorette” on Monday and Tuesday night, and the men will vote on which woman will be this

season’s “Bachelorette.” Here’s what the ladies had to say. On whether they hesitated to do the show: Britt Nilsson: It’s a huge decision. I did take time to think about it. But overwhelmingly, I just felt like it was the right decision. I felt like it was the next step. And I saw love happening on the first season, and I felt like it was an amazing opportunity. Kaitlyn Bristowe: It was definitely unexpected, and I was shocked. And yes — I was kind of just beside myself because I didn’t know what to think. I wasn’t excited about it, but I just really had to take a step back and think of the light at the end of the tunnel. On whether there was any conflict between them: Nilsson: It actually ended up being pretty cool that we were there. We were pretty good before, like we were hanging out toward the end of Chris’ season. And Kaitlyn’s amazing. There were moments where we would just kind of look at each other like, oh, my God. It was actually nice to have someone’s support. And I’m glad it was Kaitlyn on the other side. We just laughed a lot. Bristowe: To be honest, it felt like it took the pressure off a little bit, which is a weird thing to say, because I think there’s more pressure on the guys, like who do they go

to first, and they don’t even know us. On if the setup is sexist:

Nilsson: I didn’t think it had to do with us being women. I just thought that they couldn’t decide, so there were two.

I know they’ve done that for men as well. I honestly thought of it as a compliment, like we’re both so great. I like Kaitlyn a lot, so being put on the same level with her — I was like, I get it. It’s more like how a real relationship would unfold, where you’re choosing each other. Bristowe: I wouldn’t have done it if I thought it was the most degrading thing in the world. In the “Bachelor” and “Bachelorette” world, at what point do you say, “It’s crazy to do that?” It was just a twist and turn that they decided to do. The main thing we all have to think about was the end result and finding one person. LISA WEIDENFELD @LisaWeidenfeld

lisa.weidenfeld@metro.us

Love at second sight

On whether they’d hold it against men who voted for the other bachelorette: Nilsson: I’ve dated a bunch of people, right? And obviously, not every single one has worked out. I don’t think that’s a deal breaker. It would definitely be a consideration. It would be something I would be aware of. But no, I don’t think it’s a deal breaker at all. I think that Kaitlyn and I are fairly similar, and I understand why a guy would like her. Bristowe: They barely know these women, and they have a short amount of time to sit down and chat before somebody else comes to steal us. If somebody voted for Britt and then stayed, if it was me, then I don’t know. I would have a better chance to get to know him, and I wouldn’t hold it against him. Britt’s lovely.

Three things millennials do wrong when job hunting The (totally fixable) reasons you may not be landing that dream job

Mastering the art of the cold call

letters@metro.us

If you’re itching to get out of your current role and into something better, you’ll never land a new gig unless you tackle your job hunt the right way. According to millennial career coach Ashley Stahl, most Gen Y-ers are guilty of the following mistakes.

They overshare on their rĂŠsumĂŠs “This is probably the most transformational tip I could

They don’t have their elevator pitch ready “Before you even step foot in the interview, have a wellpolished, well-thought-out elevator pitch about yourself, says Stahl. According to Stahl, tons of recruiters and headhunters have told her that they can’t believe how many interviewees have given this no thought whatsoever. The bottom line is that you should be able to talk about yourself with confidence and polish.

They ask why they didn’t get the gig

Many millennials don’t shy away from asking an employer why they didn’t get an offer. It may seem proactive, but it usually rubs employers the wrong way. Similarly, Stahl says that many Gen Y-ers will call hiring managers to make sure they received their application. “If you call, and they unexpectedly end up on the phone with you, it puts them on the spot and kind of feels like you’re demanding a job interview. Instead, follow up via email. We must be financially free Re: ‘Moms need money’ (Metro, May 13) In response to letter writer Shifra Freewoman, I more than agree with her that there is value to society for the work mothers and fathers do at home because that work is far beyond any monetary reimbursement. And she has the right name: Freewoman. A woman (or man) free to do the necessary actions of cooking and education and training of her/his children into society for the survival of her/his family

and society as a whole is nearly impossible to articulate in this letter. In order to do this we must have them financially free. And ONE way is to have a 10-year moratorium on foreclosures for the homeowners and renters to relieve them of the debt burden placed there by the debt-based economy the banks and their lawyers have perpetrated on everyone. System not made to stay on forever

Re: ‘Moms need money’ (Metro, May 13) I understand what the plight of some of these single mothers are going through. I was once a divorced single mother that needed help and received it. It was hard, yes, because they do not give you enough to live on, but it is also not their responsibility. The system is not made to stay on the system forever. It is there to help pick you up then get a job and move on. Many of the people use the system for generations never to get off of it. There are many that do not want to better themselves and stay on and work the system.

This is why some cannot get the help they need. It is not our responsibility to help them forever. Some may say this seems cruel, but to even say be as generous as we are with the military! Have you ever been in the military and seen what these men and women see and are paid to protect this country. They are paid peanuts compared to what they should. RUTH NORTON

NBA playoffs’ Final Four set NBA. The Rockets, Warriors, Cavaliers and Hawks are the last teams standing. Either the Clippers are epic choke artists or the Rockets are kings of the comeback. Whichever way you slice it, Houston is headed for the Western Conference Finals where it will meet Golden State, beginning Tuesday (9 p.m., ESPN). The Clippers not only blew a 3-1 series lead to the Rockets but a 19-point lead in Game 6 last Thursday. Game 7 was rarely in doubt for Houston on Sunday afternoon as it build a 15-point lead at one point in the second quarter and owned an 85-68 lead heading into the fourth quarter thanks

to James Harden’s step-back jumper just ahead of the third quarter buzzer. The Clippers did pull within eight points late in the fourth quarter but Trevor Ariza’s corner 3-pointer all but sent L.A. home for the summer. The No. 1-seeded Warriors, who eliminated the Grizzlies in six games in the semi-finals, swept the four-game regular season series with the Rockets. All four of Golden State’s wins over the Rockets came by at least 10 points but the two clubs haven’t squared off since January. In fact, it’s been 116 days since their last meeting. “They bullied us … they smacked us four times,” Harden said four months ago. In the Rockets’ third loss of the season to the Warriors, Harden was overheard in a huddle telling his Houston

teammates that Golden State “ain’t even that good.” In 10 games this postseason, league MVP Stephen Curry is averaging 28.2 points per game with backcourt ’mate Klay Thompson putting up 20.7 points per game. No. 2 Cleveland at No. 1 Atlanta (Game 1 Wednesday, 8:30 p.m., TNT) The Hawks were a ridiculous 35-6 at Philips Arena this season and the Cavs have injury woes to contend with, as Kyrie Irving continues to play with a right knee that is not 100 percent. The Hawks also won the season series three games to one. This series is no slam dunk for Cleveland. MATT BURKE AND EVAN MACY sports@metro.us

Red Sox’ pitching slowly but surely coming around MLB. Boston now just needs the offense and the pitching to click at the same time. What a difference a month makes. Through the first month of the season, the general theme with the Red Sox centered on poor pitching but a strong offense that on most nights could make up for the struggles from the mound. That has been reversed of late, as it is the offense that has been having the bulk of the issues, and the pitching staff appearing to have turned a corner. Going into play Sunday, the Red Sox’ offense has averaged only 2.53 runs per game in the month of May. This is compared to averaging 5.14 runs a game in April. An almost 2.5 run difference is a staggering amount. The biggest reason for this is their inability to hit with runners in scoring position. As a team they are hitting .204 on the year and have nine players with at least 10 at-bats with runners in scoring position hitting at .200 or below. Pablo Sandoval is at .192, Hanley Ramirez at .179, Mike Napoli at .172, Dustin Pedroia at .167, and worst of them all, David Ortiz at .138. Despite the issues at the plate, entering Sunday’s series finale with the Mariners in Seattle, the Red Sox had won five of their previous seven games, and were guaranteed to go at least .500 on their 10-game road trip, something many didn’t think was possible at the start when they fired pitching coach Juan Nieves before departing for Toronto. A major piece in their winning has been the steady progress of the pitching staff, particularly the starting rotation. Red Sox starters have a 1.32 ERA in last four outings following Rick Porcello’s performance Saturday night. This comes after they had a 5.75 ERA in the month of April, the worst in the majors. Porcello has emerged as the Red Sox’ best starter. After allowing eight runs in five innings against the Ori-

Deflategate likely to drag on, and on It’s more probable than not that Deflategate will drag into the summer months. Reports indicate that Tom Brady’s appeal of his four-game suspension will be heard at some point in June. For reference, the Ray Rice appeal took over two months. When the appeal takes place, there is a question of whether or not NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell will serve as arbitrator or a witness. The NFLPA said that it intends to call Goodell as a witness in the appeal hearing. “This letter will serve as a formal demand that the commissioner follow the [Ray] Rice precedent and appoint an independent person to serve as arbitrator over Mr. Brady’s appeal,” the NFLPA stated in a letter sent to the NFL’s executive vice president of football operations, Troy Vincent. “If

the commissioner does not appoint such a neutral arbitrator, the NFLPA and Mr. Brady will seek recusal and pursue all available relief to obtain an arbitrator who is not evidently partial.” ESPN reported that it is “very unlikely” that Goodell will recuse himself from the appeal. MATT BURKE

Tuesday: Wade Miley (2-4, 5.60 ERA) vs. Yovani Gallardo (3-5, 3.94 ERA)

Wednesday: Joe Kelly (1-2, 5.58 ERA) vs. Ross Detwiler (0-5, 6.95 ERA)

Thursday: Clay Buchholz (2-4, 4.93 ERA) vs. Wandy Rodriguez (1-2, 3.86 ERA)

oles on April 19, the righthander has made five starts, going 3-0, with the Red Sox — as a team — winning all five. He’s allowed three runs or fewer in his last four starts and remains the only Red Sox starter to pitch at least five innings in every one of his starts. “He’s been on a solid run the last four or five outings for us,’’ manager John Farrell told reporters in Seattle Saturday night. “I thought he had some good power to his fastball.’’ Whether or not the addition of new pitching coach Carl Willis has been the dif-

ference or not, the Red Sox pitching staff is on a roll. Moving forward, the Red Sox have shown signs to have optimism. Their offense is one of the best in baseball when they perform to their capabilities, and now the pitching staff has showed it can pitch well enough to keep the team in games. As a team, there just needs to be more consistency. Getting that consistency could spell a winning summer in Boston. RYAN HANNABLE @RyanHannable sports@metro.us
