Hernandez pleads not guilty to shooting out friend’s eye Witness intimidation.

Aaron Hernandez faces a charge of trying to silence a witness in a double murder case against him by shooting the man in the face.

A month into a life sentence for first-degree murder, former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez was back in court Thursday — pleading not guilty to witness intimidation charges.

Hernandez, sporting a new neck tattoo that reads “LIFETIME,” allegedly shot his friend Alexander Bradley in the face after Bradley allegedly talked about a 2012 double murder in the South End. In February 2013, Hernandez became paranoid inside a Riviera Beach, Florida, night-

club, and believing undercover cops were nearby, “shushed” Bradley, prosecutors said.

According to Suffolk Assistant District Attorney Patrick Haggan, Bradley responded, “It’s probably because of the stupid stuff you did in Boston.”

Bradley survived the shooting but lost an eye.

“We are very serious about witness intimidation and the facts strongly support that that is what occurred,” District Attorney Dan Conley said. “We are doing our job in conducting a completely thorough investigation by introducing these charges.”

Hernandez is currently under indictment for two counts of first-degree murder, three counts of armed assault with intent to murder, one count of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and one count of unlawful possession of a firearm in connection with the deaths of Daniel de Abreu and

Those charges also address shots fired at three surviving victims, including a 26-year-old man who was wounded during the incident on Shawmut Avenue in the early hours of July 16, 2012.

Hernandez is currently serving a life sentence for the murder of Odin Lloyd on June 17, 2013. He was arrested a few days later and was convicted last month.

Hernandez is due back in court on June 4.

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission needs to play by the house rules and stop violating the state’s casino laws, Mayor Marty Walsh said Thursday.

The city filed an amended civil complaint aiming to nullify all of the Gaming Commission’s decisions regarding the Wynn Casino and Resort in Suffolk Superior Court on Wednesday.

The 152-page suit demands that Gaming Commission Chair Stephen Crosby should have recused himself from the licensing process after running into controversial land ownership issues between the city of Boston and Everett.

It also seeks to nullify the

Commission’s decisions, including the awarded license to Wynn and further seeks to disqualify all commissioners of making decisions in the region.

The front door of the casino is currently stationed on Boston land, making Boston a host city for the facility.

“They claim they require additional property in Everett for the front entrance, but has failed to legally acquire any land from Everett,” Walsh said at a press conference held on the rotary at Sullivan Square in Charlestown on Thursday.

“That makes it crystal clear that Boston has always been

Regina’s Pizzeria files for bankruptcy The North End’s iconic Regina’s Pizzeria is one 12 pizzerias affected by Boston Restaurants Associates Inc.’s bankruptcy declaration in federal court on Wednesday.

The famous brick oven

pizza joint’s board of directors voted to authorize the bankruptcy filing in April, according to The Boston Globe.

They have moved to close four underperforming stores and are trying to renegotiate three heavy leases where business has declined.

Unemployment rate drops again Massachusetts’ unemployment rate ticked down to 4.7 percent in April, the seventh consecutive month to see a decrease as the Bay State

picked up 10,100 jobs, according to preliminary state estimates.

The April rate, as reported by the state’s Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development on Thursday, comes in below the U.S.

unemployment rate of 5.4 percent.

The state’s unemployment rate in March was 4.8 percent.

Illinois lawmakers pass bill for marijuana

The Illinois Senate passed a bill decriminalizing possession of small amounts of marijuana, sending it to the governor for signature.

The bill, which passed with a 37-19 vote, makes possession of up to 15 grams of marijuana a civil law violation punishable by a $125 fine. Individuals will not face jail time.

The measure was approved by the Illinois House of Representatives in April. A spokeswoman for Governor Bruce Rauner, a Republican, did not say whether he would sign it.

Russia warns Google, Twitter and Facebook on violations

Russia’s media watchdog has written to Google, Twitter and Facebook, warning them against violating Russian Internet laws, and a spokesman said they risk being blocked if they do not comply with the rules.

Roskomnadzor said it had sent letters this week to the three U.S.-based Internet firms asking them to comply with Internet laws which critics of President Vladimir Putin have decried as censorship.

“In our letters we regularly remind [companies] of the consequences of violating the legislation,” said Roskomnadzor spokesman Vadim Ampelonsky.

Boy Scouts president says ban on gay leaders cannot stay

Boy Scouts of America President Robert Gates said the group’s ban on adult gay leaders cannot be sustained, a move that could open the door to ending the policy that has caused rifts in the organization.

Gates said at a national meeting of the group that he does not plan to revoke the charter of Boy Scout councils that allow gay leaders, according to a text of the speech.

“We must deal with the world as it is, not as we might wish it to be.

The status quo in our movement’s membership standards cannot be sustained,” said Gates.

(with a two-hour minimum), helps Jay meet women and get their numbers.

C works for a New York Cityand Boston-based dating service called Hire a Wingwoman and is one of several professional wingwomen who range from at least 21 years to as old as 50.

Susan Baxter, Hire a Wingwoman’s founder, said the idea for the service originated from her own personal experiences as a wingwoman.

“It can be hard to approach that intimidating hot girl across the bar,” Baxter explained. “It’s so much easier to have an outgoing socialite go up to people for you and talk you up. I just thought that this is a real business, and this is something people need.”

C is the perfect example of the outgoing socialite that Baxter advertised: young, fashionable, personable and attractive.

“You have to talk to people.

You have to break the ice. You have to get people to get their guard down and be nice back,” C said when I asked her what made a good wingwoman.

“You’ve got to have confidence to just go out there and just start talking to random people.

It’s a different type of personality, but I think New York is the perfect place for that.”

C, who works in advertising by day, has been with Hire a Wingwoman since the company moved to New York City nearly a year ago. None of her friends or family know about her work as a Wingwoman.

“It just hasn’t come up,” C told me. “I think I would tell my friends. I probably wouldn’t tell my family because I don’t think they would understand. They don’t live in New York — they live in the suburbs of Florida; they’re super old-fashioned. It’s not like I feel embarrassed.”

When C and Jay finally picked a place, I grabbed a beer and planted myself against a wall. Jay was on his phone and C was looking at the drink menu on the wall. I looked down for a second and when I looked up C was talking to two women sitting at the bar.

“The friend had cool leopard shoes on,” C recounted to me later on in the night. “I was like, ‘Those are so cool! I want those!

Where are they from?’ She told me this whole story … She was very bubbly.”

C also explained that along with her shoe compliment, C told a made-up story about how she had just moved to New York and was looking around

“It’s always the guy’s role to initiate and I have no problems doing that ... It’s not hard to do, it’s just not everyone is receptive when it’s a guy.” Jay for places “to have fun.”

“How much do you really have to gamble on the woman being bubbly like she was?” I asked.

‘I got lucky. I got really lucky. In my position I have nothing to lose. I just keep going until there’s nothing left.

If she wasn’t so bubbly I would have probably told my story anyway and tug at some heart strings, ya know? Get them to open up.”

I watched as all this happened from across the bar: the swoop, the compliment, the story and — as soon she earned their trust — the gentle and casual introduction of Jay into the conversation.

Jay is a good-looking man of average height in his early 30s who works in the medical field.

This was Jay’s first time going out with C but his second session with Hire A Wingwoman.

Jay arrived to his night out with C wearing his scrubs, which struck me as both odd and slightly genius.

“Women are supposed to love doctors,” I thought in my head. “Lord knows I do.”

Speaking with Jay earlier I gathered that he had no lack of confidence, and seemed like a smart and outgoing guy.

When I asked why he needed a wingwoman to help him talk to women he told me it was to “get an in.”

Jay went on to explain that

the wingwoman gives him a better rapport with women who would write him off as creepy if he approached them in a bar.

“Yes, it might seem a little odd at first but I feel like all is fair in love and war,” Jay says in defense. “If you don’t want to want to sell yourself short and get what you want, you have to do what it takes.”

I did my best to discreetly watch Jay talk up the women from across the bar, although I realized my “casual” spot standing between two full tables made me stick out like a cowlick. So I casually made my way over and sat next to them and watched from the corner of my eye.

What intrigued me the most about this stage of the evening was watching C slowly pull back from the group after introducing Jay. She buoyed herself as far as she physically could without looking out of place, all the while paying very close attention to the conversation. There was no doubt that she was getting ready to swing in the moment she sensed Jay struggling.

Luckily for her, Jay was doing just fine.

“I saw him hitting it off so I backed up a little bit just to give him some space, see where it was going.” C explained after we left the bar. “I saw it was going well so then I went to occupy the friend.”

“High five for that one,” Jay prompted, which made C laugh.

“Did you end up getting her number?” I asked Jay. He grinned casually. “I did.”

The Pixies come home The influential band is finally getting to play the kinds of venues its legacy has earned.

Headlining a massive music festival in their hometown might seem like a vindication for the Pixies, the seminal rock band that influenced such ’90s megastars as Nirvana and Weezer.

The band, beset by internal struggles in a music world that was never quite ready for them, broke up before achieving the domestic success that might have been equivalent to their legacy.

But Black Francis, the bigvoiced lead singer, says he

and original members Joey Santiago and Dave Lovering aren’t thinking about the Boston aspect too much.

“It’s not that we don’t understand the hometown thing or whatever, but from our point of view, and it’s always been this way from the beginning, when we take the stage, we’re not really anywhere. We’re in this other space. And hopefully the audience is in that space too,” he explains.

“It’s a pure space. It’s devoid of geography, and it’s devoid of what day of the week it is, and it’s devoid of what time of day the gig’s at.

It’s our show. That’s really where we’re at.”

For a band that perfected the loud/quiet/loud style of rock music (and whose reunion tour inspired a fine documentary with just that name), Black Francis says that all these years later,

Res life The band first formed in the ’80s, when Santiago and Black Francis (who was going by Charles Thompson back then) met because they lived in the same dorm at the University of Massachusetts. As to the allimportant question of where they lived, Black Francis has a ready answer. “We were in a building called Brown, which is in the Sylvan complex,” he explains. “A few years ago, I ended up moving back to that area. I live down the street from UMass. It’s kind of funny.” One might even say it’s educational.

they’re trying to keep it simple. “We don’t have any dance moves. We have very

little shtick. We’re known for not saying anything to our audience. We’re shy.”

Be that as it may, they’re taking this reunion pretty seriously. A new album was released in 2014, called “Indie Cindy,” and Black Francis seems confident it has the same old Pixies feeling. Asked what distinguishes an old Pixies song from a new one, he says, “Nothing, as far as we’re concerned. I mean, it’s our music, under our flag.”

There is one pretty big change for the band, however.

Bassist Kim Deal departed last year, marking the first permanent change to the lineup. Are the Pixies still the Pixies without Deal? It’s a tough question, and one Black Francis says the remaining members discussed.

“We had numerous conversations, but at the end of the day, we decided that we liked the music, and we like the

work and — I wouldn’t say we’re workaholics — but when we have a job, we like to do the job,” he says.

“At the end of the day, it’s rock music. And so after our initial discussions about what the future held, we decided it’s just about music. It’s what we do; it’s what we know how to do.

We’re not going to fight that reality.”

Stepping in for Deal is Paz Lenchantin. “She has been truly a blessing to this band.

We couldn’t be happier,” Black Francis says. “She totally fits in. Her creative contributions are really grounded. They come from a place of experience. She gets us.”

They never questioned adding a female vocalist back into the mix. “That’s part of our sound, that we have a female voice mixed in there with my own,” he explains.

“We like to have contrast.

band is pretty much a vehicle for my songwriting, my fronting the band or whatever, but if it was all just about that, I think it’s almost a little bit overbearing or something.”

In other words, Lenchantin’s role is vital to the Pixies sound: “She balances me out a lot, or that role balances me out a lot. It’s a beautiful thing that we don’t try to overanalyze or think about too much.

It’s just like, ‘Duh! You got the dude, and you got the gal.’

That’s a classic.”

That 1960s optimism is something Clooney would like to see more of here in the 21st century. “I grew up during the Cold War period, and I always found that although we always thought that the world would end in a nuclear holocaust at some point, everybody was pretty hopeful,” he says. “There was an awful lot of things going on that you felt you could change. I grew up in an era where the voice really did feel as if it mattered.” It’s what struck him about “Tomorrowland.”

“It reminds you that young people don’t start out their lives cynical or angry or bigoted. You have to be taught all of those things,” explains the star. “I watch the world now and think, ‘Well, I see really good signs from young people, and I feel as if the world will get better.’ I’ve always been an optimist. I’ve been a realist, but I’ve been an optimist about it.”

Memorial Day Memorial Day is fast approaching, and I hope the many will not forget the importance of this day. Memorial Day is not just another day off to shop for sales or do backyard barbecuing. In my opinion, Memorial Day is a time to remember all those who gave their lives to protect the freedoms we enjoy today. These freedoms come with great personal sacrifice for those who leave family, friends and jobs to serve the greater good. I myself have served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam era. Although I never did

see combat, I had friends who did and died serving our country. So please, this Memorial Day please honor those who gave their lives for those things we hold most dear.

Beware of barbecued bugs What ever happened to the good old days when the worst things we had to fear on Memorial Day were traffic jams and indigestion?

This year, it’s all about food poisoning by the nasty E. coli, salmonella and Listeria bugs lurking in hamburgers, hot dogs and chicken nuggets at millions of backyard barbecues.

The U.S. Meat and Poultry Hotline’s advice is to grill meat and chicken products longer and hotter. They fail to caution that high-temperature grilling forms lots of cancer-causing compounds. Do we really need to choose between food poisoning and cancer?

Luckily, enterprising food manufacturers and processors have met this challenge head-on by developing a great

variety of healthful, delicious, convenient plant-based veggie burgers, veggie dogs and soy nuggets.

These wholesome foods don’t harbor nasty bugs or cancer-causing compounds.

They don’t even carry cholesterol, saturated fats, drugs or pesticides. This Memorial Day, let’s stay safe on the roads and safe at the family barbecue.

Long weekend sports feast Playoff season. The NBA and NHL playoffs are getting down to the nitty gritty.

Memorial Day weekend is one of the more underrated stretches on the sports calendar as the NBA and NHL playoffs are both typically in their respective conference finals. That’s the case this year, as the NBA’s final four of the Cavaliers, Hawks, Warriors and Rockets have their eyes on the Larry O’Brien Trophy and the NHL’s elite quartet of the Rangers, Lightning, Ducks and Blackhawks are brawling for the opportunity to raise Lord Stanley’s Cup. A look at what’s on tap this weekend: Friday

Cavs at Hawks (Game 2, 8:30 p.m., TNT): Many believe that the Cavs already have this thing wrapped up, but it’s highly unlikely that J.R. Smith

will look like a 24-year-old Ray Allen again … like ever.

KRAFT AND GOODELL ‘DEFINITELY’ CUT DEAL Roger Goodell says there’s no deal. Tom Brady is on his own. The reigning Super Bowl MVP will have to appeal his four-game suspension through the league’s normal protocol.

The Patriots can’t help him.

The league won’t give him preferential treatment.

At least, that’s what they’re going to tell us, following the latest turn of events in the dumbest professional sports saga anyone’s ever witnessed.

On Tuesday — the first day of the NFL owners’ meetings — Patriots owner Robert Kraft held a press conference to announce that he would accept the league’s punishment as a result of the Wells Report findings. That didn’t go over well in New England.

In most people’s eyes, it seems, Kraft was giving up, at a time in which Patriots fans were ready to fight to the death.

“He chose the NFL and money over his own team and fan base,” they say.

However, perception is not always reality. And regardless of what Goodell and Kraft say, it’s no coincidence that “back-channel conversations” between the NFL and Patriots were reported just a day before

Kraft “accepted” his punishment. And it’s also no coincidence that just days before that report, Goodell and Kraft were seen having a long conversation and exchanging pleasantries at a weekend birthday party.

I don’t know about you, but in my world, “backchannel conversations” lead to “backdoor deals.” And in this case, whatever deal that was made between Goodell and Kraft — and I believe there was one — has to involve Brady. Even if Goodell tells us otherwise, which he did in his press conference at the Owners’ Meetings on Wednesday.

“The decision that Robert made was his decision,” said Goodell. “This was his initiative and something he wanted to do.”

Kraft’s options were limited. Sure, he could have essentially sued the other 31 owners, but that would have been a terrible decision for both Kraft and the

NFL. Because let’s face it, both sides need this story to go away. A lawsuit from Kraft would only prolong this foolish story. Kraft knows that, and so does Goodell.

Plus, no appeals or lawsuits guarantee you the results you’re looking for.

And sometimes, the threat of either is made for the sole purpose of creating a “back-channel” discussion, à la, “Let’s make a deal.”

That deal, I’m convinced, will guarantee that Brady gets justice. And when it comes to “defending the wall,” isn’t his suspension what this is all about?

Now Brady’s appeal will play itself out. His suspension will be reduced, if not completely revoked. And they’ll never tell you there was a deal, because part of that deal would be that nobody finds out there was a deal.

We’re past the point of swaying public opinion.

You either like Brady or you don’t. Nothing will change that when it comes to Deflategate. And the sooner he plays, the better, for everyone involved.

So when Goodell and Kraft say there’s no deal, know that I don’t believe them.
