Boston 2024 bid calls for more public $$$
Quoted
“If the public needs to help, the public should help because, with a big thing like the Olympics, you’ll bring in a lot of extra money and a lot of people from around the world. And we’ll show them how Boston really is.”
Oops. Initial report from Boston 2024 indicated that no public money would be used to fund the Olympic bid. It turns out the Boston 2024 Olympic Committee will need public funding after all. Initially, the organization promised that they would not need public funding in order to secure the bid for the 2024 Summer Games. According to a report from WCVB Channel 5 and the Boston Business Journal, the bid book shows that Boston 2024 would need more public funding than their initial pitch, which said that tax money would be to provide security. An excerpt from the bid book, which originally redacted the material, shows that the organization would need a public authority to “fund land acquisition and infrastructure costs.” The No Boston Olympics termed these documents “a smoking gun,” and are calling on the organization to withdraw their bid efforts immediately. “Unfortunately, we’re not too surprised by this,” No Boston 2024 Co-chair Chris Dempsey said. “We think these documents confirm what people thought was going to happen. It shows that they’re going to need significant public funding. We expect that they’ll need hundreds of millions [of dollars], if not more.” Specifically, the documents point to a proposal that the city finance land acquisition and infrastructure costs at Widett Circle, the site of a planned temporary stadium adjacent to I-93 and the MBTA Cabot Commuter Rail Yard where South End and Southie meet. The stadium would cost anywhere between $521 and $658 million, two thirds of which would be paid for by issued bonds. “These documents make it very clear that what Boston 2024 says behind closed doors to the IOC and USOC is very different than what they have said to the residents of Massachusetts,” Dempsey said.

“Clearly, they are responsible to their own documents and they need to answer to what they say.” Boston 2024 Vice President Erin Murphy said in a statement released from the State House News Service that the bid book was a preliminary concept in the initial bidding process. “We stand by our commitment that the operations of the Games and the building of venues will be privately funded,” she said. “Many elements contained in those preliminary documents have already changed and some will continue to change as the bid evolves.” The bid for the games also includes a $1 billion expansion of the Boston Convention and Exposition Center in the South Boston waterfront. The bid book identified the BCEC as a desirable location for the tae kwon do, judo, gymnastics, indoor volleyball, wrestling and table tennis events.
The Center is considered a prime location because of its potential as a parking facility. Gov. Charlie Baker said earlier that Massachusetts could not afford that plan. But, according to the State House News Service, Baker was unaware that the $1 billion BCEC expansion was put forward by a private group working with Boston 2024. “No one ever brought it to my attention. It was never a part of the conversation. Ever. Not once, OK? Never,” Baker said. Boston Mayor Marty Walsh said in statement that his support for the bid comes with a promise that taxpayer money not be used. “I’ve made it perfectly clear that I’m not going to use the taxpayers’ dollars to build venues,” Walsh said. “Now there are some ideas in that bid book about using [tax increment financing] and [district improvement financing] and using I-Cubed [infra-

Crime. State police step up presence in Brockton after rash of violence The Massachusetts State Police announced that they would step up their presence in Brockton following a spate of violence. The MSP will give uniformed assistance to the Brockton police and increase their activities to help combat the recent spike in violence in the city. The Community Action Team will work highvisibility operations in parts of the city where violence has been reported. “We have traditionally worked with our partners in the Brockton Police Department to help protect
the people who live, work and raise their families in the city,” State Police Superintendent Col. Timothy P. Alben said in a statement posted on the MSP blog. “This effort is an extension of that partnership and will help set the tone that street violence will not be tolerated by the Brockton police and the state police.” In addition to helping law enforcement and deterring criminal activity, the state police will share information on gang activity and firearms with Brockton police. Police seek second SUV in fatal Route 1 crash Massachusetts State Police are looking for a second SUV in their investigation of a fatal crash on Route 1 in Saugus on May 13. State police are seeking
a silver Jeep Grand Cherokee that was headed south on Route 1 in Saugus at the time of the crash, which happened shortly after 2 p.m. on Wednesday, May 13 between Walnut Street and Lynn Fells Parkway exits. Police previously asked the public’s help in finding a silver or gray Honda CRV SUV, and
are still looking for this vehicle as well. Their investigation suggests that either one of these two vehicles may have been present at the time that a commercial vehicle swerved into a dump truck in the middle southbound lane. The dump truck spun out of control and rolled over, hitting the steel guardrail before
coming to a rest blocking the highway. The driver of the paving truck, John Thebeau, 62, of Wilmington, was pronounced dead on the scene. The driver of the commercial vehicle was not injured. Anyone with any information is asked to call the state police at 978-538-6161 or 978745-8908. NATE HOMAN

Defense in Freddie Gray case seeks to move trial from Baltimore
Defense attorneys for six police officers facing criminal charges in the Freddie Gray case are seeking to have the trial moved from Baltimore, saying their clients cannot get a fair trial there, the Baltimore Sun reported on

Thursday. The lawyers filed an 85page document on Wednesday in Baltimore Circuit Court asking for a change of venue, arguing that a “presumption of prejudice” exists in the city, the newspaper said. Gray, a 25-year-old black man, was arrested April 12 and suffered a spinal injury in police custody. His death a week later led to protests and rioting in Baltimore that prompted a curfew and a National Guard deployment. Defense attorneys contend that not enough time has passed to permit “the type of healing and reconciliation in the community that would be needed to dampen the effects of the events surrounding the case,” the newspaper said, quoting from the document. The six officers face charges that include seconddegree murder, assault and misconduct in office. REUTERS
FBI launches probe into theft of U.S. taxpayer information
The FBI said it had begun looking into the illegal access of the tax-return information of about 100,000 people disclosed by the Internal Revenue Service earlier this week. “The FBI has opened an investigation into the recently reported incident at the IRS and is working with our interagency partners to determine the nature and scope of this matter,” a spokesman said. IRS Commissioner John Koskinen said cybercriminals had sought to gain access to personal tax information 200,000 times from February to May, and were successful in about half of those attempts. Jenna Bush Hager, the daughter of former President George W. Bush, is in running for a big profile boost at NBCUniversal. Page Six reports that she was in L.A. last week testing for a pilot that would replace The Meredith Vieira Show. Vieira has never quite caught on with viewers since its debut last year. Page Six says the Bush Hager show “would include both male and female hosts.” “We hear that ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’ actress Tatyana Ali was also among those testing for a host seat,” the gossip page says. Drug ring moved heroin on Minnesota Indian reservations
Miami Beach bans late-night outdoor liquor
A federal grand jury has indicted 41 people on charges that they conspired in a multistate ring to traffic heroin, prescription drugs and other narcotics on two northwest Minnesota Indian reservations, authorities said on Thursday. The defendants “represented the most significant source of heroin in Indian Country,” U.S. Attorney Andrew Luger said in a news release. Prosecutors accused the defendants of conspiring to move drugs from Detroit, Chicago and Minneapolis to the Red Lake and White Earth Indian reservations. At least 35 people were in custody.
Last call is coming earlier than usual at some outdoor bars and restaurants in Miami Beach as the tourist city tries to clean up its image by banning alcohol sales at sidewalk cafes after 2 a.m. The move, which takes effect on Saturday, is targeted at Ocean Drive in the popular South Beach district. For years, sunburned vacationers there have slurped margaritas until 5 a.m. City officials and residents complain that resulting disorderly behavior and crime are driving regulars away.

Putin blasts the US over FIFA takedown Russian president. America uses its “own methods for their ulterior purposes.” When the U.S. Justice Department announced the stunning FIFA indictments and the breadth of a 24-year world soccer corruption scandal, that sonic boom you may have heard was Vladimir Putin’s head exploding. Mind you, Russia’s name was not directly sullied in the 47-count indictment unsealed in federal court in Brooklyn, New York, which named 14 defendants in a racketeering and corruption scheme. But a second investigation announced at the same time Wednesday is seen as no coincidence. The Swiss are looking

THE FUN STARTS HERE
The Rock to the rescue Dwayne Johnson takes on Mother Nature in ‘San Andreas’ NED EHRBAR @Nedrick ned.ehrbar@metro.us
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson recently received a letter from a big-name fan, and it’s been making him think back a lot to his childhood. “When I was 8 years old, I saw ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ in Charlotte, N.C. I walked out of there so inspired. I loved the movie and I knew I wanted to be that guy — charming, kicks ass, cool with the ladies — but I had no connection to Hollywood. So to be
sitting here today, I’m grateful and very happy,” Johnson says. “And I received a letter from that gentleman who directed ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark.’ Very cool. He reached out and he said a lot of cool, motivating things.” Where exactly Johnson is sitting today is promoting “San Andreas,” a Hollywood action film in which he plays an LAFD rescue pilot facing off against the biggest earthquake in California history. It’s not exactly Indiana Jones, but he clearly overcame that whole no-connection-to-Hollywood thing. For Johnson, even when making a big, loud summer action spectacle, it’s important that the science is right. And even though U.S. Geo-
logical Survey seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones heavily criticized the film after being invited by the studio to see it — “Bottom line: Don’t learn seismology from ‘San Andreas,’” she tweeted — Johnson insists that as far as he knows everything on screen passes muster. “We had the best seismologists, top scientists and earthquake scientists from Caltech and USC pore over the script, challenge the script and then ultimately walk away from it saying, ‘This could happen. We hope it doesn’t, but it could happen,’” he insists. And, in a sense, it recently did, only on the other side of the world in Nepal. And that kind of front-and-center current event can make
turning natural disaster into big-screen entertainment a dicey prospect. “We made the movie knowing and understanding the content of it. These things happen,” Johnson says. “It was so unfortunate, incredibly unfortunate. Our prayers and thoughts continue to go out to everybody in Nepal and everybody who was affected by that. But, you know, the truth is you go into a project like this with everything you’ve got — your heart and your soul — and you just want to make a good

movie.” And Johnson himself is no stranger to natural disasters. He’s hoping that viewers will look past the massive displays of CGI destruction and see the smaller story at the heart of it: a man trying to save his family. “I think if there’s one correlating factor [with
the situation in Nepal], it would be the ideology of family and strength coming together in a tragedy like this,” he says. “I’ve been through natural disasters. I lived down in Miami for Hurricane Andrew. There were members of my family who thought they were going to die, everybody was in the bathtub, it was a tough, tough thing. So I think the idea of people coming together, like we are showcasing in our story, resonates with people. If there is any connection, for me it would be that.”

••••• Bradley Cooper plays Brian Gilcrest, a freelance defense contractor shipped to Hawaii to oversee a mysterious mission for a possibly evil millionaire (Bill Murray). There he reconnects with a longtime, estranged ex (Rachel McAdams) and wonders if the real girl for him is the Type-A fighter pilot (Emma Stone) carting him around. The lowdown: As we learned from the leaked Sony emails, the latest from Cameron Crowe (“Jerry Maguire,” “Almost Famous”) has been gutted from a much longer cut. It shows, but not in the normal ways. In most cases where that happens, the voice has been removed and the film chopped down to no more than plot. “Aloha” seems to have been diced up at random, taking out not just alleged excess but even important bits of exposition, meaning we’re sometimes fumbling to figure out what’s going on. Luckily, this is not the kind of movie that you follow for plot. And Crowe’s singular voice has not been removed. Not too unlike Howard Hawks’ “The Big Sleep,” it’s incoherent as a narrative, but every

scene is great — or not great, but alive and fun and sometimes weird. Crowe has a knack for cramming scenes with his patented clever, catchy, sometimes aphoristic dialogue. A single scene has so many funny and/or pithy one-liners it sometimes feels as if it’ll capsize; the actors even race through them, otherwise the movie would never end. Crowe makes movies so infrequently these days — this is his second since the disastrous “Eliza-
bethtown” 10 years ago — you can understand he just wants to cram as much into any film he makes, in case it’ll be another five years till his next shot. The whole of “Aloha” has this feeling. It’s a delightful mess — a highly personal work that, somehow, wound up feeling eccentric even after obvious studio interference. Whoever snipped it up failed to make something more sellable out of it. It’s a movie with a real voice. MATT PRIGGE

We find her about nine months into the company that she created at the end of Season 1 under the auspices of having a leaderless, nonhierarchical company where everybody is their own boss. It was founded on beautiful ideals of trust and respect and she’s discovering that that’s not actually a great way to run a company because there’s no one to answer to and no one to answer administrative things. It instills a lot of resentment, and there does need to be a boss. So, for the beginning of the second season, there’s a lot of Cameron negotiating between her ideals and her ambitions.
Will we start to see Donna and Cameron encounter sexism in the business world? [Those instances] have been few and far between, which I think the writers have handled really gracefully. Because they created their own company, they’re sort of living in this biodome within Texas. It’s the ’80s, and could potentially be very sexist once they pass the parameters of their biodome when they need to raise money for their company or go out into
been at companies for years and is part of a generation of ambitious women who had to fight for all the rights that they have, and Cameron was the recipient of those struggles, so she hasn’t had firsthand experience with how dark the world outside her computer can be.
Even in more modern shows, it’s not common to see a focus on a business started by two women. Do you feel very conscious of how unusual that is? Like everything on the show as it’s related to our gender, it’s not something that we think about at all until we get asked by press. I mean, you’re just a human who is running a business. At no point are you like, man, I have a vagina! You’re just doing your job, and trying to do it as best you can, and the issue of what sexual organs you have or what you orientate yourself as doesn’t really come up until other people ask you about it, both within the show and external to it. So it doesn’t feel weird to film. It feels like playing an ambitious human being struggling to do the very best with the thing that she’s created.
Tech genius Do you feel more confident about your computer knowledge now? I am constantly astounded at how much information a human can take in and have it not transfer to knowledge. It’s one of the great discoveries of my life that I can read and learn and study and ask questions and feel in the moment like I understand something, but if I turn around and try to explain the most basic architecture of a computer to somebody, I’m like, I don’t know if I can.

“Light Up the Sky takes place at the Ritz-Carlton in the suite of the show’s diva star Irene Livingston (Paula Plum). The show’s VIPs arrive one by one for a pre-show toast. There are a fair amount of characters, but the setup makes sure we know who’s who. As flamboyant director Carleton Fitzgerald, Will McGarrahan sets the tone with a strong rendition of “Another Open’n’ Another Show. Later, you meet the rookie playwright, a highrolling producer, his off-kilter wife and other oddballs who capture the roller-coaster ride of life in the theater. Though no one knows what makes a hit, even the loftiest among them knows that it’s money driving the business of show business. Faced with the

possibility of a huge bomb, the claws come out and the snappy repartee gets even funnier. The joy of the show comes from its overall feel. Director Scott Edmiston assembled an ensemble that makes it look easy. Perhaps it’s their shared love of theater, or their decades
of comedy on Boston stages. Either way, when you’ve got Bobbie Steinbach and Kathy St. George delivering great performances, and the cast closes the show with a rousing “There’s No Business Like Show Business, you know they’re having as much fun as the audience.

Americans, witch-hunts, Klu Klux Klan lynchings, police violence against labor organizers and presidential assassinations, to name a few. If you add to that the glorification of firearms in the movies and on television and the subsequent bloodlust and carnage on-screen, you will see that communities of color are not and have never been the only segment of society plagued by violence.
Re: ‘People are safer when they see cops as allies, not enemies’ (Metro, May 27) In retired police sergeant Sal Giarratani’s letter to the editor, he expressed the belief that “a culture of violence ... permeates communities of color.” This view is one-sided. It also ignores American history. The history books are full of examples of American violence: the Hamilton-Burr duel, gunfights in the American West, gangland slayings, the massacre of Native
about this response I don’t know where to begin. First, no one’s arguing that police are not necessary to “keep our communities safe and sound.” The point of contention here is that there are some police who violate civil liberties, which is resulting in black men dying. The agenda of the “Black Lives Matter” or “Hands Up, Don’t Shoot” protesters is to look for accountability from police officers who are murdering scores of black men. Second, the idea of “where’s the outrage?” in regard to murders in communities of color is ridiculous. The reason there is not outrage is

Re: ‘People are safer when they see cops as allies, not enemies’ (Metro, May 27) There are so many things disturbing
because the parties who are charged with these crimes face justice, whereas the officers who are murdering black men do not. They are acquitted and sent home without pay. I agree that streets are safer when communities and the police can see each other as allies, but that comes when police treat citizens with respect and dignity and don’t view them as the enemy. FIRING FARRELL FAR FROM THE ANSWER FOR RED SOX It’s easy to blame the manager. Especially when you start the season like the Boston Red Sox have in 2015. Entering a weekend series in Texas, the Sox find themselves in the basement of the AL East. After finishing last season with a 71-91 record, the hope was that things would only get better this year. So far, that is not the case. But don’t blame John Farrell. Of course, when it looks like you’re on the verge of a second-straight losing season, picking apart your team is fair game. And make no mistake, Farrell hasn’t been perfect this season. Re: pitching to Nelson Cruz with first base open in the ninth two weeks ago and then paying for it moments later with a walk-off loss. He even admitted that was stupid. But it’s one game, one decision. This year’s problems have been far worse than that. Mainly because the biggest issues are talent- and production-related. Firing the manager in this specific case — which some have called for — would be nothing more than a “kick-inthe-behind” move, a wake-up call to the rest of the team, if you will. Problem is, the Red Sox have already made those type of moves this season, and we’re only two months in. They fired pitching coach Juan Nieves on May 7, desig-

nated Edward Mujica for assignment and then traded him to Oakland for cash on May 10, yanked Justin Masterson from the rotation and put him on the DL on May 14 because he was brutal, and outrighted Allen Craig and removed him from the 40-man roster on May 18. The message went from “You’ve cost your pitching coach his job” to “You’ve cost yourself a spot on the roster.”
So should “You’ve cost your manager his job" be the next message? Some think so. I am not one of them. Because by now GM Ben Cherington should get the message. This is all about talent, not the guy filling out the lineup card. The Sox are under .500 because they haven’t been able to hit and pitch at the same time. When the offense is hot, their starter can’t get out of the third inning. When
they get a solid seven or eight innings out of their starter, the offense makes the opposing pitcher look like a Cy Young candidate. It’s infuriating. Farrell is not the problem here. He can’t prevent Rick Porcello from hanging a juicy change-up middle-in in a onerun ballgame. He can’t shorten Hanley Ramirez’s swing for him as Ramirez tries to crush a slider low-and-away down the left-field line with a runner

in scoring position. These are things the players must fix on the field, in the moment. But if you ask me, regardless of what the batting order is moving forward, I do believe this offense will produce this season. The biggest question I have, and Cherington should too, is his rotation. Either way, the Red Sox have a talent issue on their hands, and it’s up to the GM, not the manager, to fix it.

Blame for Red Sox’ struggles can go to heart of the order With the Red Sox entering play Thursday with a record of 21-26, the blame can go any which direction. Ben Cherington did a poor job constructing the team, the pitching isn’t cutting it with a 5.17 starters’ ERA and the
offense isn’t getting it done — averaging 2.8 runs per game in May. All of those are viable reasons, but the biggest issue is that the core of their lineup isn’t getting it done. David Ortiz, Mike Napoli, Hanley Ramirez and Pablo Sandoval are hitting a combined .235 on the year. This is a major problem considering they are the team’s No. 3-6 hitters, the meat of the lineup. Napoli (although he had a
monster home stand last week) is the worst of them all, batting just .208 with 38 strikeouts in 149 plate appearances. Sunday was the first time all season his batting average was over .200. Ramirez got off to a hot start, hitting 10 homers in the first month of the season, but then he suffered a shoulder injury after running into the left field wall at Fenway Park during the last week of April.
He missed just three games, but he hasn’t been the same since his return. The left fielder hasn’t been able to pull the ball with the authority he was doing prior to the injury. For the month of May, Ramirez is batting just .210, with three extra-base hits (no home runs) and 1 RBI in 87 plate appearances. “I mean, what I learned through the years, man, that’s the season, that’s how it goes,
up and down, up and down,” he said to reporters this week. “One day you’re hot, one day you go in a slump. You’ve got to try to stay there, fighting every day till you get hot again.” Ortiz is hitting .216 with six homers and 18 RBIs. The most worrisome thing has been his performance against lefties, as the designated hitter is just 6-for-57 (.105) against them this year. Overall, Sandoval is better
than the other three, batting .265, but like Ortiz he has struggled against left-handers. He’s hitting just .114 against them, but three of his five hits have come in the last four games when the switch-hitter has hit left-handed against lefties. Through 47 games, Mookie Betts leads the team in RBIs with 24 — not a good sign for a team when the RBI leader is the leadoff hitter. RYAN HANNABLE

“I used to think sex was a bond and the feeling you got while you climaxed was love but that empty feeling you got when it was all over, well that was what it felt like to be brokenhearted.” - David Mathieu David Mathieu is a young engineer, with a knack for sexually enticing women. Living out in California he attempts to breakout of his social shell through the use of spoken word. One night while performing one of his poems a woman catches his eye but pays him no mind. In his world a disconnect between emotions and reality has gotten him this far and he plans to keep it that way, but things rarely go as planned. Finally after some time the young woman gives him a chance and they embark upon an imperfectly perfect journey. While he tries to live his dream he realizes that sometimes sex comes with emotions, which can be for the better and can also be for the worse. Over time the two grow close and break barriers they both had setup until chasing their dreams got in the way. After a whirlwind break up the two go their separate ways but seemingly always end up going down the same path until they realize they’re on the same path because this was the part of their dreams they couldn’t understand.
