Slain terror suspect had plot to kill ‘boys in blue’ Change of plans.

Usaama Rahim originally planned to behead a cop outside Massachusetts but changed his mind at the last minute, say prosecutors.

The man fatally shot by antiterror officers in Roslindale had told a friend he planned to kill some “boys in blue” this week, prosecutors revealed Wednesday.

Usaama Rahim, 26, had originally planned to behead a law enforcement officer outside of Massachusetts, but changed his mind at the last minute and told his friend. David Wright, 26, that he wanted to attack a state police officer instead because it was easier.

“I’m just going to, ah, go after them, those boys in blue,” Rahim was heard saying on a phone call to Wright at 5 a.m.

Tuesday morning that was recorded by the FBI. “Cause, ah, it’s the easiest target and, ah, the most common is the easiest for me.”

Less than two hours later, Rahim lay in bloody pool outside a CVS on Wharton Street after a BPD officer and an FBI agent shot him when he lunged at them with a foot-long, military-style knife.

His pal — and alleged accomplice — Wright was arraigned in federal court in Boston on Wednesday afternoon on charges of conspiracy to obstruct justice. The 6-foot-7 Wright had to be led into court

wearing two sets of handcuffs because of his size.

Wright was charged with conspiracy to obstruct justice by altering, destroying, mutilating, concealing or covering up a tangible object with intent to impede an investigation. This charge carries a possible five-

year prison sentence. There was no plea offered.

Rahim, said police, told Wright in a tapped phone conversation, “I’m going to, ah, go after them,” with a “nice little tool” that was “good for carving.” During their conversation, Rahim instructed Wright to destroy his phone and wipe his laptop clean.

He also told Wright to delete the information on his phone and smash it on the ground and make sure it was completely destroyed “before anybody gets it.” He then said, “CSI will be looking for that particular thing.”

According to the affidavit, Boston police officers and FBI agents approached Rahim in

Roslindale shortly after this conversation. At this point, Rahim pulled out the Bowie knife and stepped toward the officers.

When they ordered Rahim to drop his weapon, he told them to drop theirs. Officers then opened fire, killing Rahim.

During interrogation, Wright told the FBI that he knew Rahim and a third party intended to behead an intended victim in another state during a meeting between the three on a beach in Rhode Island. Wright indicated that he agreed with and supported Rahim’s plan.

“I don’t think he was shot in the back. However, we couldn’t see clearly at all. Was he brandishing a knife or not?

We can’t be clear on what transpired,” said Faaruuq.

“I do feel personally that if he weren’t from the Muslim

community [the officers] would have approached him a different way.”

Suffolk County DA Dan Conley, who joined Faaruuq and investigators at a briefing Wednesday promised that investigators would look at every angle.

“It’s very, very important that we get to the bottom of exactly what happened, and we pledge that we will do that,” Coley said.

But ACLU representative Kade Crockford said lingering questions is troubling. ”The only facts we have are that the FBI and the Boston police walked up to him and he ended up dead,“ Crockford said. ”We don’t know if they were in uniform, if Rahim knew them or if these were new faces to him, or how he came to the attention of law enforcement.“

Before he died, he’d ordered several large knives from online retailers and, according to the affidavit filed by Special Agent Joseph Galietta, had spoken earlier in guarded language of a plan to kill someone outside of Massachusetts.

He’d joked in wiretapped phone conversations with Wright about “thinking with your head on your chest,” which Galietta described as “a reference of some foreign terrorist organizations to behead targets and place their heads on their chests in propaganda videos.”

The Suffolk County DA’s office said Boston police was working with civil rights activists to examine surveillance video of Rahim’s death. That video will eventually be released to the public, the DA said, though it’s not expected until next week.

The Islamic Society of Boston issued a statement yesterday, saying that they were ”saddened to hear of the shooting,” and that the Boston police had invited their leaders and other members of the Muslim community to view the surveillance footage of the incident.

“This tragedy has yielded many important questions that merit additional attention, and while we cannot expect all questions to be answered [Tuesday] morning, our hope is that greater clarity and transparency will bring some peace to our congregation and the Boston community at large.”

Boston mayor signs greener emissions laws Vehicles that were owned or leased by Boston or used by its contractors will need to be retroďŹ tted with emissions reduction equipment under an ordinance signed Wednesday by Boston Mayor Marty Walsh.

The ordinance also addresses the authority for the Boston Police Department, Transportation Department and the Air Pollution Control Commission to enforce “in a consistent wayâ€? a limit on unnecessary idling of ďŹ ve minutes.

Fines for violation of the idling rules will be $100 for the ďŹ rst oense and $500 for subsequent oenses.

The ordinance, ďŹ led by City Councilor Stephen Murphy, was hailed for its potential to reduce air pollution and its negative impacts. “The asthma rate in Boston’s neighborhoods continues to climb,â€? Murphy said.

According to Walsh’s oďŹƒce, most of the city’s diesel school buses are newer and have built-in pollution reduction equipment, or have been retroďŹ tted already.

Digging up the dirt on City Hall Old town.

Archeologists hope to find artifacts left from as far back as 1645 in a dig at Old City Hall and Boston Latin.

Just one day into a monthlong dig at Old City Hall and Boston Latin School, Boston archeologists are unearthing parts of the city that have been lost for centuries.

Archeologists on Tuesday began the four-week dig in the hopes of unearthing an important part of the Hub’s history: the foundations of the 17th century Boston Latin’s schoolmaster’s house and courtyard. If successful, city officials said it’s likely that they will

find artifacts left from the schoolmasters and their families dating between 1645 and 1809. “It is an exciting moment for the city of Boston to potentially unveil an important part of Boston’s history and a piece of the Freedom Trail,� said Mayor Marty Walsh.

Boston archeologist Joseph Bagley is leading the dig with a team of volunteers in hopes of uncovering new pieces of history about the schoolmasters and their families as well as unveiling a part of the freedom trail. To Bagley, the most exciting part of the dig is that archeologists are getting to dig in a public place. “It’s a chance to show people that Boston’s history isn’t done and there is more that can be discovered,� said Bagley.

Tami Crawley, a California native visiting the city, says that stumbling upon the dig site added to her exploration of Boston.

“I was here visiting the Freedom Trail, and this is a great piece of firsthand history,” she said. “Anything they find from this time period is something that people will want to see and learn about.”

A bombshell police report shows that Josh Duggar confessed to his father Jim Bob at least three times that he molested his sisters and a family friend, reports In Touch. The report also pins Josh at age 15 when he admitted to molesting his sister who was 5 years old at the time. Josh allegedly molested his sister at least seven times.

The Washington County Sheriff’s report found that the Duggars, stars of “19 and Counting,� did not report Josh’s confessions to the police until at least 16 months after he made them, even though Josh had not corrected his behav-

ior. During those 16 months, the Duggars did not take any professional action at all: They did not get mental health counseling for Josh or the victims involved. Legal experts told In Touch that Josh’s parents Jim Bob and Michelle could have landed in prison for six years for sitting on their hands in regards to their son’s actions. However, due to the statue of limitations expiring, the Duggar parents are in the clear. Jim Bob told police that when Josh turned 14, he admitted to his father that he had been sneaking into his sisters’ room at night to touch them on the breasts and genitals as they slept. He touched several of his sisters, as they all shared one bedroom. Josh also told his father that this had happened four or five times.

FBI to investigate Russia, Qatar World Cup bids

The FBI’s investigation of alleged corruption at FIFA includes scrutiny of how soccer’s governing body awarded the 2018 World Cup to Russia and the 2022 competition to Qatar, a U.S. law enforcement official said.

The review would be part of a probe that goes beyond the allegations of bribery in a U.S. indictment of FIFA officials announced a week ago, the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told Reuters.

U.S. authorities said at the time they were investigating a $150 million bribery case while Swiss prosecutors announced their own criminal inquiry into the bids.

Russia and Qatar have denied wrongdoing in the conduct of their bids. In the case of Qatar, there was some surprise that the tournament was awarded to a small desert country with no real soccer tradition and where daytime summer temperatures can top 104 degrees.

Qatar’s Foreign Minister Khaled al-Attiyah said there was no way Qatar would be stripped of its right to host the World Cup because it had had the best bid.

For its part, Russia dismissed concerns it might lose the right to host the cup.

“Cooperation with FIFA is going on and, most importantly, Russia is continuing preparations for the 2018 World Cup,” President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, said. REUTERS

President Barack Obama signed into law legislation passed by Congress earlier in the day reforming a government surveillance program that swept up millions of Americans’ telephone records.

Reversing security policy in place since shortly after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, the bill ends a system exposed by former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden. The spy agency collected and searched records of phone calls looking for terrorism leads but was not allowed to listen to their content.

A former attorney for Spanish fashion chain Zara filed a $40 million lawsuit claiming he was harassed and ultimately fired for being Jewish, American and gay.

The lawsuit says Ian Miller, who was general counsel for Zara USA Inc. from 2008 until this March, was excluded from meetings, given smaller raises than co-workers and subjected to racist, homophobic and antiSemitic remarks.

Miller also claims the executives who harassed him were insulated from punishment by Amancio Ortega Gaona, the company’s founder and the fourth-richest person in the world. REUTERS

Wal-Mart said it was relaxing its dress code and raising the temperature at its stores as part of an effort to improve working conditions.

Executives made the announcement at a gathering of 3,000 workers brought to Arkansas this week before the company’s annual shareholders’ meeting due to be held on Friday.

The effort, which includes a new training program and upgraded handheld terminals for department managers, is being billed as a sign that management was listening to some of the one million hourly workers it employs in the United States.

A California school district, facing a civil rights lawsuit, has agreed to drop its objection to a Native American student wearing an eagle feather at his high school graduation ceremony in the city of Clovis.

Attorneys for the American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California on Monday filed an emergency lawsuit to challenge the Clovis Unified School District’s refusal to allow the feather,.

Study finds famous California redwood is 777 years young Timber. Redwoods include the tallest living trees on Earth.

A new study to determine the age of iconic old-growth redwoods in California’s Muir Woods has revealed that one of the tallest and most famous trees in the forest is much younger than many assumed given its massive size, scientists said on Tuesday.

Tree 76, so named because it towers 76 meters, or 249 feet, above the forest floor, is 777 years old, much younger than the oldest known redwood, according to a study by Humboldt State University, which has long been working with conservation group Save the Redwoods League on the impact of climate change on the trees.

“Tree 76 is one of the larger trees that you can walk near,

so I think people have been guessing about its age for a long time,” Save the Redwoods Science Director Emily Burns said. “We know Redwoods can live quite a long time. The oldest one that we know of is 2,500 years old.”

Redwoods include the tallest living trees on Earth.

Though visitors often ask the age of the tree in Muir Woods, located in the same area that famously played host to a 1945 United Nations meeting, this is the first time scientists can give an accurate answer, Burns said.

Researchers from Humboldt were able to climb the massive trees last year to take various pencil-thin core samples that they can use to compare and determine not only the age of the tree but the structure and biodiversity as well.

Katherine Chappell of New York loved animals It is the ultimate irony in the tragic death of Katherine “Katie” Chappell, the New York woman killed in South Africa’s Lion Park, that she was so dedicated to keeping alive one of the beasts that ended her life.

Chappell, 29, who grew up in Rye, New York, was a true-blue conservationist and a talented visual effects editor who worked on HBO’s “Game of Thrones” via a company called Scanline.

Chappell in March turned to the crowdfunding site GoFundMe.com to raise $1,300 for Wildlife ACT. “I will be assisting rangers in tracking and monitoring animals, setting up camera traps, participating in poaching prevention techniques, providing support and assistance to veterinarians, and be involved in game capture and relocation,” she wrote at the time.

Her brutal end came Monday in Johannesburg in Lion Park, the closest habitat to the

city to let visitors get up close to the wild beasts.

“The allegation is that while she was driving, the window was open and the lion attacked,” Lt. Col. Lungelo Dlamini, a spokesman for the police in Gauteng province, told USA Today.

In the latest round of faux pas by the embattled singer, Brown reportedly made life hell for the crew of a private jet, “smoking a ton of pot” despite FAA regulations and requests he stop, according to Us Weekly. “He blew smoke at a flight attendant and said, ‘I paid $60,000 for this jet, so I own it and everyone inside,’” a source says. He also took aim at another flight attendant: “He told her, ‘What is your old ass doing here anyway? I like to have the help be people I’d actually like to f—,’” the source adds. Charming, that one. Also, Chris? Hot-boxing a jet and being a jerk to the crew is basically where Justin Bieber was behaviorwise more than a year ago, so step up your game. Don’t worry, fans of ridiculous camp, that top-secret Lifetime movie starring Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig that wasn’t going to happen is apparently actually going to happen after all. And soon. A billboard for “A Deadly Adoption” featuring the two stars popped up in L.A. this week with an air date of June 20, despite claims by Ferrell in April that the project was scrapped after news

of its existence leaked. So not only do we still get Wiig and Ferrell doing their best melodramatic overacting, but we get it soon, too. Score. The plot, in case you care, follows a married couple (Wiig and Ferrell) who open their homes to a young pregnant woman (Jessica Lowndes) in the hopes of adopting her baby, but things go terribly, terribly wrong — naturally.

After careful examination of the series — a “consequencefree journey from highs to even higher highs” dubbed “The Real Douchebags of Broverly Hills” — the only real question is why critics were at all surprised by the content of the film. And how did I never notice that Turtle really is “your average ‘Entourage’ fan”? That is so spot-on.

Back for more Interview. Despite nearly dying last season, Hugh Dancy’s FBI profiler just can’t stop chasing “Hannibal.”

For a man who plays one of television’s darkest characters, Hugh Dancy laughs easily — though it’s the same awkward laughter of viewers while watching his tensionratcheting show “Hannibal.”

The series, about a pre“Silence of the Lambs” Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen) returns tonight at 10 on NBC. The premiere finds Dancy’s tenuously sane profiler Will Graham recovering from being gutted physically — as Hannibal was emotionally — after betraying his secret to the FBI, while the doctor is enjoying a new life as a professor in Italy.

We caught up with Dancy about why Will can’t quit Hannibal, filming in Florence and what could have been.

How much of Season 2 was real for Will versus setting Hannibal up?

Both of those things were happening simultaneously and Will, to a certain extent, had bifurcated himself.

There were two possible outcomes: One would be that Will assisted in apprehending Hannibal, or that Will ran off with Hannibal into the sunset in some kind of murder duo.

And neither of those would’ve been a satisfactory outcome for Will — he was already too split. So he was just postponing the inevitable.

If Will had known their

surrogate daughter Abigail was still alive, would that have changed much?

It would have only confused him further, because in a sense it was an answer to his prayer to see her brought back to life. In another sense, it’s the darkest thing that Hannibal had ever done.

Will is pursuing Hannibal despite nearly being killed by him. Is he still working with the FBI, or is this personal?

By the end of Season 2, Will has proven that he has no scrap of self-preservation whatsoever. Will is certainly cut off from the FBI but, more to the point, he’s cut off from the people who would’ve been his allies — he doesn’t trust them, and they don’t necessarily trust him.

Hannibal loves Will, but how does Will feel about him?

There is an involuntary quality to each of their feelings of the other. Both have gone against their normal nature.

Hannibal, the reason his revenge at the end of Season 2 was so brutal is because he showed himself to Will.

He made himself vulnerable. Will, obviously, has gone [to] extremely dark and dangerous places, not just literally but in the sense that he allowed himself to go to the brink and go beyond the brink for Hannibal. They’ve been alone in the world until they recognized something in the other that made them feel not alone, which is as good a description of love as you can have.

The show moved to Florence this season, how was it?

With respect to Toronto, being there exclusively over the winter for the last three years made Florence even more beautiful.

Had you been there before?

No, never. We were [filming] during the day and had a lot of big dinners at night. It was very convivial.

How could he?

[Laughs] Certainly, the audience initially won’t know what he’s in pursuit of other than Hannibal the man, whether it’s vengeance or reconciliation or something else. Will doesn’t necessarily know the answer to that question himself — he’s achieved a Zen-like state that he has to go

on his quest, and whatever he finds at the end of it, literally and emotionally, that’s OK, that’s the road he needs to travel. So he’s almost clearer than we’ve seen him before, and that’s where that possibility of forgiveness comes from.

This month, an exhibition charting the history of Weller’s first band, “The Jam: About The Young Idea,” opens at London’s Somerset House. It’s a major honor, but Weller is fairly nonchalant about it all. “I know nothing about that, because I’ve not organized it. But I’m very proud they’re doing it.

I’ve given them some stuff. I’m sure it’s well researched, with lots of different artifacts.” Will Weller pop over to see it, we wonder?

He hasn’t given it much thought, he says, adding: “I’ll have to, I guess.”

First, there was The Jam, the ’70s trio whose songs expanded from the edgy punk of its time to anthems capturing the 20th-century British zeitgeist. Next, in the ’80s, came the jazz-, Mod-, and soul-inspired Style Council. Then there is a twoand-a-half-decade solo career and an expansive exploration of blues rock. All of which adds up to a considerable legacy, but Paul Weller, the man behind all of this, isn’t done yet.

The English singer-songwriter and guitarist’s latest record, “Saturn’s Pattern,” which was released in May, is another musical gem, splicing classic pop-soul and blues rock into a brand new sound. After more than two dozen albums, Weller is surprisingly low-key about his achievements.

“Every record is different,” Weller says. “I don’t know if anything I do has any bearing on the next, apart from me trying to improve it, and finding ways to improve.”

Weller says he doesn’t live in the past and is only interested in present projects. Even his playlist is full of the newest bands.

“There’s so much great stuff around,” he says. “There’s a Scottish band called Young Fathers I really like. Parma Violets ... And Toy, another English band I really like. I heard this young American fella the other night called Leon Bridges,” he says of the Texan soul sensation. “I thought he was pretty good as well. And Alice Smith, she’s great. Alabama Shakes, too. There’s a load of great music about.”

Pantelleria is an island off Sicily noted for its sweet Moscato wines.

• Nero d’Avola is a Syrah-like red that is incredibly popular now, and many of the new boutique vineyards produce one.

Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean, has some of the best and most varied archaeological sites in Europe.

Sicily has better-preserved Greek temples than you’ll find in Greece.

The Valley of the Temples near Agrigento, a Unesco World Heritage Site, has eight temples, built from about 510 to 430 B.C. The most stunning is the Temple of Concordia, considered to be one of the finest Greek temples in the world. The reason they’re here is that this was

the ancient and important Greek city of Akragas, founded in the sixth century B.C. It once had a population of 800,000.

Taormina isn’t even the largest Greek theater on Sicily. That would be the one at Syracuse, further down the East Coast.
