Teen tackles bigotry one essay at a time Scholar. Sumaiya Mahee is on a mission to build understanding in order to combat negative Muslim stereotypes. She was in third grade the first time a boy in her class called her a terrorist. People won’t sit next to her on the bus when she wears her hijab. Without it, people sit in the open seat without a second thought. Even living in a city as diverse and progressive as Cambridge, Sumaiya Mahee, 13, faces prejudice on a daily basis because of her faith and heritage. But her self-awareness and cultural knowledge go far beyond her middle school years. She is the author of an essay, “You’re Not Who You Say You Are: Beyond the Single Story,” an assignment for her combined social studies and English classes at KennedyLongfellow School that went viral on social media and was published in Public Radio International’s Global Nation Education section. “I face these stereotypes every day because I am a Muslim girl. It’s what I experience,” Mahee said. “Writing about this boosted my selfesteem because it gave me a way to tackle the stereotypes that I face. When I started talking about it, I realized I wasn’t alone and that other kids go through the same thing.” People are reacting to a growing tension and suspicion toward Muslims on a local, national and interna-

tional level. In the Boston area, residents have seen numerous terrorism-related trials and two brutal displays of jihadi-fueled violence. Between the violent saga of Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, Usaama Rahim’s fatal standoff with authorities in Roslindale, Tarek Mehanna translating al Qaeda propaganda, Rezwan Ferdaus’s plan to fly explosives into the Pentagon and U.S. Capitol building and Ahmad Abousamra

joining ISIS, local Muslims are under a microscope even in places as forward-thinking as the Bay State. “It’s hard to take in because I am viewed as a terrorist by people,” Mahee said. “It’s hard to take in because I am not the kind of person who would hurt someone.” She writes in her essay, “According to society and everything else going on in the world, I am not who I say I am,” an external identity that has been forced upon a child because of extremists. “My goal is to keep working to correct the stereotypes,” Mahee said. “I don’t want other Muslim kids to grow up and have to face those and not be able to do anything.” She wrote about reaching a boiling point after facing mistreatment day after day. She,

her sister and her best friend were walking home from the masjid around midnight one evening with their hijabs on when two men laughed and said, “Danger! It’s the Muslims!” Mahee had had enough and shouted back, “Wait till we come after you! You’re not going to survive any longer!” The interaction with the two men was the dawning of a profound personal realization: Hate cannot be combated with hate. “I was shocked when I first read this,” English teacher Woodly Pierre-Louis said. “Here she is, this tiny little girl and it amazed me that anyone could see her as a threat or a target of ridicule.” NATE HOMAN @MetroBOS

Salem. Cops shoot knife-wielding man in the butt Salem police shot a man in the buttocks after he allegedly stabbed another man before rushing officers with the knife. Officers responded to a report of a stabbing near 31 Salem Street at about 1:45 a.m. on Tuesday and found a 34-year-old victim with stab wounds to his left forearm

and neck area. He was conscious enough to identify his attacker. Police started looking for the accused stabber, Brock Fleming, 21, in the North Salem area where he lives. They found him on Walter Street. Police say he made a run at one of the officers with a knife. That officer then drew

his gun and Fleming turned to challenge the second officer. The first officer fired his weapon, hitting Fleming in the buttocks. Fleming was taken to North Shore Medical Center for treatment where he underwent surgery for nonlife-threatening injuries. Medical personnel took the stabbing victim to Massachu-

Verdict. Man gets life for murdering Amy Lord Edwin Alemany will spend his life behind bars for fatally beating and stabbing a South Boston woman after kidnapping and robbing her in 2013, a Suffolk County judge ruled Tuesday. Alemany was found guilty Monday of first-degree murder in the kidnapping and murder of Amy Lord, a 24-year-old woman who lived on Dorchester Street. Alemany will serve his sentence without the possibility of parole — the mandatory sentence for his crimes. A woman who survived one of Alemany’s attacks before his arrest for Lord’s murder spoke Tuesday morning before sentencing, The Boston Globe reported. Kayleigh Ballantyne called Lord her “guardian angel” and said, “She helped me fight and do what I did.” Ballantyne told the court she got a tattoo of an angel wing in honor of Lord. “She will always be with me,” she said.

The defense attorney for Alemany conceded guilt on Friday in his closing statements, but claimed his client was insane. The jury rejected the insanity defense. Alemany attacked Lord as she headed to a gym, dragging her back to her apartment before forcing her into her car to withdraw money from five ATMs. Her Jeep Cherokee was found set ablaze in Southie and her body in the Stony Brook Reservation in Hyde Park.

Prison break

Residents may have spotted fugitives over the weekend Two residents said they spotted the fugitives in their backyard at 12:30 a.m. on Saturday, ABC News reported. They were holding what appeared to be a guitar case,

which other media reported was kept in one inmate’s cell and may have been used to hide tools used in the escape. “We’re just lost. We don’t know where we are. We’re on the wrong street,â€? the resident told ABC News the men responded when confronted. That encounter occurred about ďŹ ve hours before

guards realized the pair was gone. Law enforcement oďŹƒcers who have tracked Matt in the past describe him as devious and calculating. The two inmates had managed to maintain good enough behavior to gain a place on the prison’s “honor block,â€? where looser restrictions allowed them to wear and keep cloth-

SITE OF ESCAPE Clinton Correctional Facility CANADA Dannemora Willisboro

A daring weekend escape from a New York state maximumsecurity penitentiary, the facility’s first prison break, marked at least the third time convicted murderer Richard Matt had moved to bust out from behind bars. As authorities searched for the fourth day on Tuesday for Matt, 48, and his fellow convicted killer David Sweat, 34, details emerged showing that the older inmate had twice tried to escape prison, once successfully. Police investigating his getaway from the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, New York, just 20 miles from the Canadian border, were questioning a woman who worked in the prison tailor shop where the men had menial jobs. She was identified in various media outlets, including ABC News, as Joyce Mitchell. According to her Facebook page, Mitchell is an industrial training supervisor at the prison. She was hospitalized with “severe chest pains on Saturday, the day the prison break was discovered, her son Tobey Mitchell told NBC News. TV images and media reports showed large numbers of

Meanwhile, Matt’s only son told the Buffalo News that his father had a history of prison escapes. “He has escaped before, Nicholas Harris, 23, of Angola, New York, was quoted as saying. Matt fled upstate New York’s Erie County Correctional Facility in 1986. Ned Ehrbar takes on the world of gossip. NED EHRBAR @Nedrick ned.ehrbar@metro.us

Sorry, Pittsburgh Pride attendees, you won’t be enjoying the musical stylings of one Iggy Azalea. Actually, if you’re Pittsburgh City Council president Bruce Kraus or one of the groups that canceled their Pride appearances in protest of Azalea’s inclusion, then you’re probably not too broken up over the news. The Aussie rapper finally bowed to pressure that her performing at the event wouldn’t be such a hot idea given past remarks she’s made on Twitter that came off as homophobic. But don’t worry, she’s sitting this one out. And she’s totally sorry, you guys. “I am truly disappointed that I have to share this news, but I will no longer be performing at Pittsburgh Pride on June 13. This has been a difficult decision, as I truly support the event and LGBTIQA communities. However, I feel my participation at this point would only serve to further distract from the true purpose of the event,” she — or more likely her publicist — wrote on Twitter. “I am a firm believer in equality. Unfortunately in the past as a young person, I used words I should not have. The last thing I want is for something so carelessly said

The show ends soon, and they’re going back to England after.” But if this baby ends up being a girl, will Mumford have to change his band’s name?

Hey guys, guess what! Miley Cyrus has more sex-related stuff she’d like to tell you about. The shy, reserved and demur pop star opens up to Paper magazine about sexual mores and her own “fluid” sexuality. “I am literally open to every single thing that is consenting and doesn’t involve an animal and everyone is of age,” says Miley, who posed naked with her pet pig for the magazine. “Everything that’s legal, I’m down with. Yo, I’m down with any adult — anyone over the age of 18 who is down to love me.” That’s probably a lot of people, ma’am. You might want to narrow it down a bit more.

It soon became clear that Kim wouldn’t find anything Kanye wanted in this children’s clothing store, so she went with Plan B.

What do you get for the megalomaniacal hip-hop superstar who has everything? If you’re Kim Kardashian and said rapper is husband Kanye West, you get him a private night of slam dunk contests at the Staples Center, home of the L.A. Lakers, to celebrate his birthday. “Kim rented out the Staples Center so Kanye and his boys could play an NBA-style game with real refs and Laker girls,” a source tells E! News. “John Salley was the announcer. Houston Rockets player James Harden and rapper 2 Chainz were the

coaches. John Legend sang the national anthem.” The party, which cost a reported $110,000, was attended by Justin Bieber, Tyga and NBA stars Russell Westbrook and John Wall, plus there were video messages from Kobe Bryant, Magic Johnson, Carmelo Anthony and Shaquille O’Neal that played on the Jumbotron. But man, wouldn’t it have been awkward if it turned out West didn’t really like basketball all that much? Also, I would genuinely like to hear more about 2 Chainz’s coaching style.

Faux pas. From bindis to baby hairs, cultural appropriation is the new black, but is there a way to pay homage without offending? It’s music festival season, which means you can expect to see lots of Instagrams of celebs and models wearing all sorts of controversial, culturally inappropriate accessories like Native American headdresses, South Asian bindis and geishainspired kimonos. And no matter how much backlash they face, consumers — and designers — can’t seem to stop stealing from other cultures. Indeed, “appropriation” seems to have reached a fever pitch in fashion: baby hairs on the Givenchy and DKNY runways, “squaw” (!) fashion at

Dsquared2, an exact replica of a traditional Oaxacan blouse by French designer Isabel Marant. Even the Metropolitan Museum’s Costume Institute broaches the subject in its current exhibition, “China: Through the Looking Glass,” about the ways in which Western couturiers have appropriated, remixed and reimagined Chinese imagery for over a century. “It’s been going on for a long time,” says historian Valerie Steele, director of the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology. “But while the feeling that it’s a rather problematic phenomenon has existed among scholars, it’s been slow to filter down to the fashion world.” That’s partly because fashion has long couched such practices in terms like “multiculturalism” or even “postmodernism.” Indeed, wearing a garment derived from another culture once signified one’s sophistication and open-mind-

edness. Yet, says Steele, “it’s too easy to say that it was always celebratory — particularly when referenced in racist language or done in a way that reinforces cultural stereotypes.” Think Yves Saint Laurent’s Orientfetishizing “Opium” perfume or the horrifyingly named “coolie” hats inspired by Chinese field workers or Givenchy’s socalled “Victorian chola” girls today. But even without racist language — and even with the best of intentions — cultural thievery can still be harmful, whether economically, socially or spiritually. “Many South African designers, for example, are resentful that European designers have appropriated their designs and textiles and then lumped a variety of different, distinct cultures together under one name,” says Steele. Native Americans have also been very vocal about design-

ers misrepresenting their culture — calling any vaguely Southwestern print “Navajo,” for instance. And Australian Aborigines have spoken out about designers blithely using certain patterns that are sacred or that hold special

meaning — similar to the bindi in Hinduism. The main difference between cultural appropriation then versus now? The Internet has made it much easier for those who feel their culture and traditions are being threatened to speak out. And rather than preventing consumers from engaging with another culture’s sartorial customs, such openness allows them to do so in a sensitive and empowering way. “If you’re a white person, but you really love African kente cloth, do the research,”

says Steele. “Ask your AfricanAmerican friends, ‘Will you be offended if I wore this?’” Steele also suggests finding brands that employ — and provide a living wage to — traditional craftsmen in other countries. “Talk to people,” says Steele. “If you are open and curious and say, ‘I admire this. I like it. How can I wear it?’ then people respond to you.” RAQUEL LANERI @RaquelLaneri raquel.laneri@metro.us

Paul Feig is ready for ‘Spy 2’ Comedy. The ‘Bridesmaids’ director has another hit with Melissa McCarthy Paul Feig has developed quite a track record working with Melissa McCarthy, who broke out in the director’s 2011 “Bridesmaids.” Their latest comedy, “Spy,” triumphed at the box office opening weekend, and they’ve got a little something called “Ghostbusters” on the horizon. But Feig would love to find some time to make a “Spy” sequel, if that’s all right. When you’re approaching a spy comedy, how do you figure out the right tone to not make it a complete spoof? For me, it’s all about tone. I

enjoy watching parody, but I don’t want to make parody and I don’t want to make satire, and I don’t want to make spoofs just because there’s nothing to latch onto. I just really faced plotting this like a drama, like a spy movie that I would want to see — but with a story that wasn’t so complicated that it wouldn’t have room for the comedy interactions that I like. But it’s important for me that it’s violent and dangerous. If you don’t feel that your lead character is in peril, it’s hard to engage. I just want to make sure that even at its most extreme comedy moments, it makes sense, where you don’t go, “Well, that’s just dumb.”

Some of your most notable comedy set pieces involve bodily functions. Do you have some sort of traumatic memories that you’d like to talk about? Actually, my most recurring nightmares have to do with filthy bathrooms, so I think I do have a weird thing about that. But it’s funny, when we were doing “Freaks and Geeks” people thought I was so classy, but there’s not one episode of “Freaks and Geek” that doesn’t have a fart joke in it. I think fart jokes and s--- jokes are some of the funniest things in the world, if you can figure out how to do them right. They’re the most human jokes in the world. instance, there was talk of doing a “Bridesmaids 2,” but that never went anywhere. Yeah, Kristen [Wiig] never wanted to do it. But I have no problem with franchises. I kind of thought “The Heat” would’ve ended up being a franchise. It would’ve, but Sandy [Bullock] didn’t want to do more, and I get that. She’s a giant star. But it’s what I loved about TV. You get to spend time with the characters and really develop them beyond the two hours that you get in a movie. So I like the idea of franchises, and this one, definitely. She takes a burlap weave, soaks it in a tub of water and leaves it in a pile to dry for that wrinkled effect. To complete the look, use Hawser rope as a tieback.

Don’t throw out that old scratchedup dresser just yet. Ornberg likes to dress up vintage pieces in sea charts. In the book, she says to first clean the wooden item and then sand with

Then cut the appropriate-sized pieces of chart, apply wallpaper paste and stick firmly, and then smooth out any air pockets. Keep the surface protected with clear, nonyellowing, water-based varnish.

Using Hawser rope, bind the edges of the rope with twine and use a glue gun to attach it to the mirror’s frame. Nail in some brads to secure the rope. Fashion writer doesn’t know what she’s talking about

every day. First of all, how does a girl from Pittsburgh become a fashion expert with a fullpage spread on FASHION and FESTIVAL? Last time I checked Pittsburgh wasn’t London, Milan, Paris or New York. You can argue that she attended fashion school and majored in art history, but that would be an insult to my friends over at the Fashion Institute of Technology. Laneri says, “Cultural thievery can be harmful.” Since when is it harmful for superstars and designers to wear a bindi or kimono on stage? If anything, they are representing a union

Re: ‘Is your festival outfit racist?’ (Metro.us) Never in the history of reading articles on fashion in New York City (born and raised in Queens, the most diverse area on the planet by consensus) HAVE I BEEN SO APPALLED. It makes me question the integrity of what you’re pushing to the population of 18 million people going to work

and understanding of culture as opposed to the bias Laneri has projected in this article. She basically seeks to undermine the way designers label hats by calling the hats Chinese workers wear “coolie hats” and says this is offensive. Laneri, what I need you to understand is that we live in a world where these words are expressed behind closed doors so why not give them a vestibule for an open platform on how we can transform a negative connotation with positive association? African culture is being [appropriated] by Iggy Azalea and such — did she ask the African

community if it was okay for her to wear a African kente cloth? And if she sought approval, where does it start? Lol! Where do you get off projecting underhanded supremacy? [Which is] what I’d call an article that seeks to underhandedly segregate as opposed to integrate. What was Laneri seeking to do here? I’m absolutely disgusted by this read. SADIA N. Celts with some sweet options at pick No. 16 NBA. There is solid talent available to the Celtics throughout the 2015 NBA draft. The 2014-15 NBA season turned out to be a pleasant surprise for the Boston Celtics, who exceeded expectations and made the playoffs in just their second “rebuild” year. That said, there’s a lot of work to be done. Fans have higher expectations for a “big splash” this offseason, but let’s be honest: The C’s haven’t had much success in free agency in their history. The rebuild will likely come via trade — or via the NBA draft. Just take a look at the Golden State Warriors, who drafted Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green. Hitting in the draft is key to a successful rebuild, and the Celtics have an opportunity to do it this year with two first round picks (Nos. 16 and 28) and two second round picks (Nos. 33 and No. 45). Let’s take a look at three options with that No. 16 pick:

1

Willie Cauley-Stein, C, Kentucky OK, so the Celt-

ics won’t be able to land Cauley-Stein at No. 16, but they can trade up for him if he falls to the right team.

SPORTS

Kelly Oubre could very well fall to the Celtics at No. 16.

If there were ever a player for Boston to trade up for, it would be for Cauley-Stein, who is easily the best defensive player in this year’s class. Cauley-Stein is a legit 7-footer, but by no means is he your typical 7-footer. The guy can literally defend all five positions on the basketball court, and that’s exactly what he did at Kentucky. In an NBA where teams are beginning to kick the traditional lineup to the curb, Cauley-Stein’s versa-

/ GETTY IMAGES

tility on the defensive end makes him a very intriguing big man. The offense needs work, but he’s got the quickness to get to the hoop and throw down.

2

Kelly Oubre, SF, Kansas

Hmm, a swingman out of Kansas who falls to the Celtics. Where have we heard this before? OK, there’s certainly no comparing Oubre to Paul Pierce, but the Celtics could use a young “3” with a ton of

upside, and Oubre fits that mold. He spent just one year at Kansas, but prior to that played at Findlay Prep, the same prep school as Avery Bradley and Tristan Thompson. Oubre is the prototypical swingman and, at just 19 years old, has plenty of room to grow. Scouts think he can become a great two-way player. He could also make James Young more expendable if an offseason trade presents itself.

3

Bobby Portis, PF, Arkansas

The jury is still out on forwards Jared Sullinger and Kelly Olynyk. Is there a future for either of those two in Boston? Portis is a battler on the court. At 6-foot-11, he has great strength and size, and with an improving shooting range looks like he could be a very capable NBA power forward. He’ll be hard to pass up. NHL

Lightning shocking many so far in Final We are only three games into what has been a fantastic 2015 Stanley Cup Final between the Lightning and Blackhawks but it is already amusing to think back on how many people thought that Tampa Bay had basically no shot to beat Chicago in this series. The Blackhawks won Game 1 in Tampa Bay’s Amalie Arena, 2-1, but the Lightning took Game 2, 4-3, and then rallied for a 3-2 win at the United Center in

3

Game 3 on Monday to grab a 2-1 series lead. Based on the fact that all three games have been decided by one goal, it’ll be surprising if this ends in either five or six games. Futhermore, an epic seven-game series would be a great way to end an excellent postseason for the NHL. There were plenty of heroes for the Lightning in Game 3: Ryan Callahan (1 goal, 1 assist), who reappeared after a very quiet playoff run, Cedric Paquette who had the game-winning goal (easily

Braydon Coburn and the Lightning have frustrated Chicago through three games. / GETTY IMAGES

the biggest of his career) and Victor Hedman (2 assists) who has been brilliant the entire postseason and provided the assist on Paquette’s tap-in. Attention now turns to Game 4 on Wednesday (8 p.m., NBCSN). If the Blackhawks go down 3-1 in the series, they are the last team that you would ever count out, but beating the Lightning three times in a row at this point is something they do not want to contemplate. Of note, Patrick Kane has been held scoreless so far in this series. RICH SLATE

MLB

Red Sox back at it in Baltimore The Red Sox will play the second game of a three-game set in Baltimore Wednesday (7 p.m., NESN). It’s a short road trip for the Sox as they return home Friday to face the Blue Jays this weekend. Rick Porcello (4-5, 5.01 ERA) will get the ball for Boston Wednesday against the O’s. Baltimore is scheduled to counter with Wei-Yin Chen (1-4, 3.18 ERA).

Yankees (32-25)

Pirates (31-26)

Mets (31-27)

Maybe the fall back to Earth has started for the Astros as they have lost five straight games, but even with the struggles of late, they still hold a three-game lead in the West.

Though the Dodgers have dropped six of their last 10, they still sit atop the NL West standings by a game. Adrian Gonzalez’s power numbers have gone down a bit.

The Yankees have been on a roll, winning six in a row and seven of their last 10 to lead the AL East. Their offense has been led by Mark Teixeira, who has 17 home runs.

The Pirates have a plus-43 run differential, third-best in the NL, but they still sit in third place. Their pitching staff is led by Gerrit Cole (1.73) and A.J. Burnett (2.11).

New York is back on top of the NL East standings, leading the Nationals by half a game. Bartolo Colon continues to lead the Mets’ rotation with eight wins.

Cubs (30-25)

Thanks to a 20-10 home record, the Twins are now tied with the Royals for first place in the AL Central. They are led by Mike Pelfrey, who has a 2.28 ERA, the fourthbest in the AL.

Kansas City holds a very slim lead over the Twins in the AL Central with its plus-43 run differential, the second-best mark in the AL. The Royals also would have six AL All-Star starters if voting ended today.

San Francisco had a chance to take advantage of the Dodgers struggling, but it too has won just four times in its last 10 games and still trails them by a game in the division.

Like the rest of the AL East, the Rays have been on a hot streak of late, winning seven of 10 games to move 1.5 games behind the Yankees. Chris Archer is dominating, as his 1.84 ERA is second in the AL.

The Cubs have played well so far this year, they just happen to be in the same division as the best team in baseball so they are 6.5 games out. Anthony Rizzo is having a solid season, batting .332.
