Brewery files for ‘Boston 2024’ trademark attempt Hopping to it. Amid the fight over the city’s Olympic bid, Sam Adams seeks “Boston 2024” mark for the brewery.

As backers of Boston’s embattled bid to host the 2024 Olympic Games struggle to overcome public opposition, the maker of the city’s famous Sam Adams beer has jumped into the fray by applying for a “Boston 2024” beer trademark.

The Boston Beer Co. has applied to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for a trademark on the words “Boston 2024,” which would be limited to beer, Jessica Paar, a spokeswoman for the brewery, said on Wednesday.

“We were introduced recently to members of the Boston 2024 Committee and had a very preliminary conversation about collaborating on a special beer in the future,” Paar said. “There’s nothing set in stone. It’s just a fun idea we talked about.”

The Boston 2024 host committee is in the midst of reworking its pitch to the city after polls showed more residents of Boston oppose the idea of hosting the Summer Games than support it.

Massachusetts State Police scratched a Top 10 Most Wanted fugitive off their list early Wednesday after they caught a man accused of breaking a baby’s ribs hiding underneath a kitchen sink.

The man wanted for beating a 9-month-old girl in Cape Cod was busted in a makeshift hideout made of wood and Sheetrock underneath the sink in his girlfriend’s apartment in Belchertown. He had been evading authorities since last year.

He was to be arraigned in Belchertown District Court on assault and battery on a child causing substantial bodily injury and witness intimidation.

On Nov. 15, 2014, Belchertown police responded to a report of a 9-month-old baby who was injured in a fall. But when police arrived, they found injuries that were not consistent with a fall,

including significant bruising on the child’s forehead and around both eyes.

The child was taken to a nearby trauma center, where medical personnel discovered the child had also suffered two rib fractures.

Medical evidence indicated that these injuries were not accidental.

Belchertown police determined that Truehart had been alone with the child at the time of the injuries and that he had fled prior to police and paramedics arrival.

Parishioners get breathing room in long standoff A decade-long standoff between parishioners trying to save their Massachusetts church and church leaders who want to close it will last a little longer, following a Wednesday appeals court decision.

Parishioners of St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Church in Scituate, south of Boston, have maintained a 24-hour vigil in their church since the Archdiocese of Boston in 2004 named it as one of 70 parishes it intended to close in a restructuring.

The church is the last of a half-dozen parishes in the archdiocese that had been occupied by parishioners seeking to prevent their shutdown. Other groups have since abandoned their efforts or lost in the courts.

T. Man gets life in prison for random bus stabbing The man convicted of randomly stabbing to death a fellow passenger as he stepped off an MBTA bus was sentenced to life in prison on Wednesday.

Javahon Goodwin, 23, was convicted of second-degree murder on Monday for the stabbing death of Rashad Lesley-Barnes on Aug. 12, 2012. Goodwin followed Lesley-Barnes off the Route 23 bus and stabbed him multiple times, then fled the scene.

“While we can never bring true closure to Rashad’s family, I hope that today’s sentencing brings them a sense of peace in knowing that the person responsible for his murder has been held accountable,” Suffolk County District Attorney Dan Conley said in a press release.

“Their strength and grace through a terrible ordeal were inspiring to all of us, and they remind us what a special young man Rashad must have been.”

Pope backs new tribunal to hold bishops to account Abuse. Victims’ groups have been urging the Vatican to establish clear steps to make bishops more accountable.

Pope Francis approved on Wednesday an unprecedented Vatican tribunal to judge bishops accused of covering up or failing to prevent sexual abuse of minors, but one victims’ group branded the move as too little, too late.

A statement said the tribunal would come under the auspices of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, the Vatican’s doctrinal arm, “to judge bishops

with regard to crimes of the abuse of office when connected to the abuse of minors.”

Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi told reporters the bishops could also be judged if they had failed to take measures to prevent sexual abuse of minors.

The complaints against the bishops would initially be inves-

tigated by one of three Vatican departments, depending on the jurisdiction under which the bishops fall, before being judged by the doctrinal tribunal.

The U.S.-based Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP) said the pope should have gone much further. “[The pope] could have sacked dozens of complicit bishops. He has, however, sacked no one,” SNAP said in a statement.

SNAP urged victims of abuse to “stay vigilant and withhold judgment until we see if and how this panel might act.”

However, Anne Barrett Doyle of BishopAccount ability.org, an independent group that helps tackle the issue in the Catholic church, cautiously welcomed the announcement. REUTERS

Scandal-plagued FIFA postponed the bidding for the right to host the 2026 World Cup on Wednesday and embarked on a search to find a replacement for the outgoing FIFA president, Sepp Blatter.

Uber loses bid for arbitration in US driver lawsuits

Uber lost a bid to force arbitration in a lawsuit brought by its drivers as a U.S. judge ruled the smartphone-based taxi service’s 2013 and 2014 employment contracts dealing with arbitration were “unconscionable and therefore unenforceable.”

The ruling, from U.S. District Judge Edward Chen in San Francisco on Tuesday, allows the lawsuits over driver background checks to continue in federal court.

Arbitration is generally viewed as a friendlier forum for corporate defendants.

The decision is the latest in a host of legal and regulatory challenges facing Uber.

Earlier this year, the same judge rejected Uber’s bid to deem its drivers independent contractors, which would have prohibited them from recovering a range of expenses. Chen said a jury would decide that question.

In a statement on Wednesday, Uber said it disagreed with the arbitration ruling and will plan to appeal it.

For decades, South Florida has battled drug traffickers who ship boatloads of cocaine from South America. Now the region is dealing with a new epidemic — cheap, synthetic drugs that arrive from China through the mail.

As authorities in the Sunshine State battle with the surge of Alpha-PVP, better known as “flakka” or “gravel,” police departments have begun equipping officers with field detection kits, employing sniffer dogs at mail facilities and training patrol units to look for signs of delirium.

The drug’s popularity, however, is only growing. In 2014, the first year it appeared in the state, authorities in Broward County, which includes Fort Lauderdale and Hollywood, recorded 190 incidents involving flakka. By early May of this year, the number of incidents involving the drug had already raced past 275.

“Cocaine was king, until this year,” said Detective William Schwartz, a veteran narcotics officer with the Broward County Sheriff’s Office.

The manhunt for two inmates who escaped from a New York maximum security prison expanded to neighboring Vermont on Wednesday as the pair set a record for the longest jailbreak in New York history, authorities said.

Richard Matt, 48, and David Sweat, 34, escaped from Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, New York, five days ago, cutting through steel walls, squeezing through a steam pipe and popping out of a manhole.

More than 450 state, federal and local law enforcement agents were searching the area north of New York’s rugged Adirondack Park on Wednesday, with the search extending into neighboring Vermont, New York State Police Superintendent Joseph D’Amico told reporters.

They may have had help from a female prison worker

who befriended the inmates, New York State Police said on Wednesday.

Prior to escaping, the men discussed heading for Vermont, a rural state with dense forests and seasonal cabins, accessible by a ferry across Lake Champlain, about 40 miles south of the prison, police said.

The longest previous escape from a New York prison lasted just three days, according to data from the New York Department of Corrections and Community Supervision. In other New York state prison escapes, freedom lasted less than six hours for 60 percent of the 30 inmates who succeeded in fleeing in the last decade.

Elaborate escape schemes generally require equally detailed plans for fleeing the area and living life under the radar.

Laverne Cox wants to spill secrets Binge. The “Orange Is the New Black� star is desperate to talk about the new season.

Laverne Cox is very ready for Friday’s premiere of the third season of “Orange Is the New Black� to go ahead and get here already, if only so that she can finally talk about new plot developments, particularly about her character, Sophia Burset. “I just want people to see it so we can really get into it,� says Cox, who has been sworn to secrecy since filming the latest batch of episodes a few months ago.

Luckily for us, she is willing to tease a little bit of information. “The third season was my favorite to shoot,� she says. “I think we just got deeper into who Sophia is, what makes her tick. I got to do some stuff that

I’ve never gotten to do before on camera.�

But it’s not just the trajectory of her character that had her so impressed. “Just the stories hit me in my gut, every single one. Every script I read I would just sit in my apartment just being so moved to my core,� Cox says. “There was one episode where I was like, ‘OK this is really serious. This is bigger than me.’ I have to really honor the story, and you have to connect with something bigger than you.

That’s what it’s really all about.�

While we can only guess — for now — what that episode is all about, it’s good to know that Cox shares a desire familiar to a lot of fans of the series. “I’ve told [series creator] Jenji [Kohan] I want to be in the writers’ room, but that’s never going to happen,� Cox says. “I would

With its much-anticipated new season in the offing and the show already enjoying plenty of critical and awards love, Cox feels confident in doing a little back-patting, especially given how Netflix and binge-watching have changed viewers’ approach to TV. “It was 2013 when we premiered. Things have changed a lot in terms of the culture, and I love that we were kind of at the forefront of it,� she says.

With a mostly female

cast including an impressive number of women of color, the show is also at the forefront of the changing face of TV, something Cox is happy to see — but under one condition. “An unprecedented number of pilots this season had ‘minority’ actors — I hate that word — actors from different racial and ethnic backgrounds, which is great but it’s so weird,� she says. “I don’t like the idea of it being a trend because trends come and go. I like the idea of it being a real change that happens where we see the real diversity

KATNISS: STILL A GREAT FEMALE CHARACTER The new trailer for â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Hunger Games: Mockingjay â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Part 2â&#x20AC;? was just released and it once again reminded me how much I love Katniss Everdeen. She defies every stereotype of a heroine weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been brought up to know and love, and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s as refreshing as a giant bucket of ice water thrown in my face.

Katniss is just â&#x20AC;Ś different.

Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hard, but not unbending. Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s had to deal with the death of her father and a mother whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s checked out; she has to take care of her sister and deal with famine and a society that prizes children fighting to the death in an arena for their entertainment.

The thing is, sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not just hard. She hasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t turned into one of those kickass chicks weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re shown who are so hard after rape/torture/loss of children and loved ones that they have no feelings left and therefore must be killed at the end, because we canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t hook them up with someone.

What guy can handle a chick â&#x20AC;&#x153;harderâ&#x20AC;? than him, amirite?

Katniss is a realistic portrayal of a young woman who has to fight to survive, but she

isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t a robot.

Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also human in the way she deals with what ails her. Your usual hero kills and fights and has no other reaction besides a long-suffering yet supersexy look on their face. Killing is just a thing they do. Katniss is absolutely suffering from PTSD, dealing with what it means to actually take another life. Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a mess, as any one of us would be.

Like any young woman, she thinks about love and relationships, but like anyone dealing with this sort of unimaginable trauma, she doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t always have time for it. When she does, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a product of real time spent together and shared hardships (Gale), or shared trauma and experiences (Peeta). Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not just gazing at a pretty guy (ahem, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Twilightâ&#x20AC;?) and thinking youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not good enough.

This is the sort of character Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been hoping for after years of seeing ciphers and Mary Sues. Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not there as mere scene dressing.

Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not a fantasy creature whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s above it all. Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not damaged goods that canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t go on, though she is indeed

girl, and the next album, ‘The Only Place,’ was when I was 24 and that was sort of like, ‘What the hell is going on?’

The new album is still kind of like, ‘What the hell is going on?’ but I also have a better grasp,” the 28-year-old tells us on the phone from her native California.

Drake, California-style But even if you’re not touring in an alt-rock band, playing big festivals like SXSW and Coachella, Cosentino promises you’ll still relate. “One of my favorite artists is Drake, and the reason why I like him so much is because even though he’s a super-famous, rich rapper, he talks about experiences and feelings

in his life that [anyone] can relate to,” she says. “That’s something that will always be a part of Best Coast. I want people to be able to relate.”

Loving the ’90s Musically, this album is more ’90s-focused than their past albums, and Cosentino says she and Bobb Bruno, the other half of the duo, were inspired by a wide range of musical influences, many that fans wouldn’t expect.

“Bobb was really influenced by the Gwen Stefani song ‘Cool’ and by Jane’s Addiction. I was really inspired by Hole and Oasis,” she says.

The result is an album that Cosentino, Bruno and critics say is the band’s best yet. “For

For anyone in search of the best oysters in town, add another contender to your quest.

Longtime Neptune Oyster chef Michael Serpa made the move to his own place, opening Select Oyster Bar in Back Bay in April.

“I think it’s kind of a natural progression for people in the restaurant industry to want to have their own expression and their own version of a restaurant. So the opportunity came about and it fit well for what I wanted to do, and we did it,” explains Serpa.

But don’t go looking for a scandal in his departure from Neptune, where he worked for seven years. “It was a great, great place to work,” affirms the chef. “I wouldn’t have left there to work somewhere else if it wasn’t for myself.”

As to the menu itself, Serpa says they’re “leaning Mediter-

ranean” in their food choices.

“We definitely have a lot of Basque Spanish influences as well. But we’re trying to stay away from the super classic New England stuff like the chowder and clams and that sort of stuff.”

The menu also features plenty of crudité options, which Serpa says have been a hit with customers, as well as the wine pairings they set them with. “That was one of the most creative and fun things for me, to make a wine list and make it seafoodcentric, seafood-friendly. But also cover all the bases, so we have classic wines on there,” he explains.

And if you’re overwhelmed by all the options, Serpa has a quick recommendation for what to pair. “I would say the tuna crudo with the Txakolina rosé would be really nice.”

Time to head out to the waterfront: “All at Once,” a 20year survey of work by Arlene Shechet, is open now at the Institute of Contemporary Art. Shechet is known for her material variety and the exhibit features blown glass, plaster, paper, clay, wood, brick and porcelain. Curator Jenelle Porter describes Shechet’s work as “recasting century-old tradition into her mold.”

The exhibit progresses chronologically, beginning with early work from the ’90s when Shechet was primarily working with plaster. She says that plaster’s quickness to dry helped her focus in the studio.

While the forms were initially intended to be abstract, Shechet couldn’t help but notice the shape of a Buddha in her work. For the following year, she continued making plaster Buddha sculptures and companion paper pieces.

The show is expansive.

Each room represents a phase of her work, and each phase seamlessly gives way to the next, emphasizing the artist’s evolution. In the main hall of the exhibit, glazed sculptures fill the space. They’re reminiscent of organs, bubbling and sagging with many tiny holes.

Each is on a custom pedestal

made from a wide range of material, including metal and brick. Porter explains that in doing this, Shechet is “using the apparatus of the studio in the sculpture.”

But unlike previous exhibits, Shechet’s sculptures are not sensitive to light, so the curators were able to open the museum’s ceiling-length skylights.

The light compliments the work, illuminating the space, form and material.

There’s a good chance “All at Once” is the most of Shechet’s work you’ll see in one place. In addition to the sculptures acquired for the exhibit, the ICA borrowed work from permanent collections at the Museum of Fine Art and the Harvard Art Museums. When asked how many pieces were in the show, Shechet had to think before answering, “More than 300 probably.” She had never counted, and after seeing the exhibit, you’ll understand why.

One room alone holds nearly 50 porcelain sculptures from the artist’s time in residence at Meissen, a world renowned German porcelain factory. Shechet summarizes her career and work simply. “I’m trying to discover the form — trying to discover what I want to make,” she says.

The sounds of Puerto Rico Jamaica has its reggae and Trinidad is famous for its calypso, but Puerto Rico is one of the most musically diverse islands in the Caribbean.

Bomba y plena gave birth to the island’s most famous music: salsa! It didn’t solely originate in Puerto Rico but was also influenced by Cuban son music, and since it burst on the scene in New York, it’s been further influenced by other Latin American nations and musical styles, together producing a true fusion music.

Puerto Rico has produced an impressive range of musicians, including famous names like Ricky Martin, Jose Feliciano, Rita Moreno, Daddy Yankee, Don “El Rey” Omar and Jerry Rivera.

As a U.S. territory, it’s also one of the easiest Caribbean islands to visit, requiring no U.S. passport and using U.S. dollars.

The island’s history contributes to the wide range of styles you’ll hear when you’re there. When the Spaniards came, by way of Columbus in 1493, they brought with them religious and, later, classical music. Although born in Spain, the world-famous cellist Pablo Casals had a Puerto Rican mother and spent the last years of his life on the island. He’s buried in the

17th century. This is linked with plena music, which merged bomba with indigenous folk music, and produced the blend they call “bomba y plena.”

The period of Spanish rule was also a gateway for European folk music to come to the island. As in the U.S., folk music helped produce country music; the music created by the mountain-

dwelling Jibaro people has been described as the island’s equivalent of both folk and country.

BASEBALL DEAL TIME IS HERE Baseball is a unique sport because we can project accurately without ever watching a game.

There are no unquantifiable Matthew Dellavedova dives to the floor or Le’Veon Bell stiff arms. Everything in baseball can be measured, recorded and boiled down into statistics. While standard stats like batting average and ERA have a lot of flaws, advanced stats like wOBA, BABIP and xFIP tell a broader story. When those numbers get outside of career norms, we have trades to make.

Dee marks the spot Dee Gordon is always going to have a high batting average on balls in play (BABIP) because he’s so fast. But this year’s .421 mark is out of control. Starling Marte led the league with a .373 mark last year and Gordon has never finished a season above .350. A regression is coming, meaning Gordon will be making more outs when he puts the ball in play and therefore will have less chances to steal bases. Sell him high.

NHL. Julien dishes on a strange Bruins offseason Claude Julien is now the longest-tenured head coach in the NHL, but he’s well aware that the good times don’t last forever.

“The important part was to understand the business and you have to allow the GM to assess and make decisions,” Julien told ESPN about the Bruins waiting so long to commit to him this offseason. “[New Bruins GM Don Sweeney] has got to feel comfortable too. As much as it wasn’t a lot of fun, or easy, it wasn’t frustration, it was more about understanding the situation, and I understood it.”

Against Memphis, they won Game 1, 101-86, but lost Games 2 and 3 by scores of 9790 and 99-89. Stephen Curry was mortal in those first three games, like he has been in the Finals thus far, as he averaged 21.3 points per game.
