Power plant protesters march for three days to reach Boston Dangerous. Activists say the facility should not be operational. A large group of activists marched from Plymouth to Boston over the course of three days, calling on the state to revoke Pilgrim Nuclear Power Plant’s license on Tuesday. The plant, they say, is too dangerous to remain operational. “At a time when we are trying to adopt alternative energy plans, there are lots of alternatives to archaic facilities that put the public at risk,” said former Gov. Mike Dukakis. Dukakis started fighting the radiology emergency plans form both Pilgrim and Seabrook Nuclear Power Plant in Seabrook, New Hampshire, in the 1980s. During the shutdown of Pilgrim from 1986 to 1988, Dukakis butted heads with the NRC and opposed the emergency plans which he and his administration said would not protect the public in the event of a core meltdown. Sen. Dan Wolf, of Harwich, and the co-chair of the Legislature’s Joint Committee on Labor and Workforce Development, said he was inspired by these efforts then and hope to further them now. “This plant has been operating for 43 years on a 40-year life, and is licensed for 60 years,” Wolf said. “To be using 1960s tech-

nology in 2015 is a failure on multiple levels.” In 2014, the Nuclear Regulatory Committee ranked Pilgrim among the nine worst performing nuclear power plants in the country when weighing in maintenance activities, spent fuel storage, safety and other risk factors. Located 38 miles southeast of the city, Boston is well within the range of exposure in the event of a meltdown, but Cape Cod would bare the brunt of the radiation. Activists from Occupy Hingham, Cape Downwind-
ers and the Pilgrim Coalition marched the 54-mile walk, which they called the “March for Our Children” to the Gardener Auditorium, calling on legislators to close the plant. Pilgrim shut down in January 2015 after two main transmission lines went down, but state officials said there were no safety hazards. It reopened to full capacity in late May after a 35-day shutdown. The nuclear reactor in Pilgrim is a GE Mark I, the same type and age as the one in Fukushima that melted down in
March 2011. But Pilgrim was still granted a renewed license in 2012, a move former Attorney General Martha Coakley opposed, after Entergy Corporation said they made $70 million in investments, replacing the fuel in the reactor and other equipment upgrades. There have been five power plant meltdowns in the last 34 years. NATE HOMAN @MetroBOS

2.0 spread. Boston 2024 bid now proposes events across the state The greater Boston area is known as a walking city, which was a significant selling point for the city’s 2024 Summer Olympics bid, which promised to deliver “the most walkable Games in modern times.” But after several residents have told the organizers to take a long walk off a short pier, Boston 2024 unveiled a 2.0 plan that now spreads the events out all over the Bay
State. Those who stood to reap the benefits of hosting various events are all for it, much more so than many of the city’s residents. New Bedford scooped up the sailing events, originally slated for Boston Harbor, some 60 miles south of Boston, on June 4. “The sailors who will be here nine years from now know that there is no better
place, not just in Massachusetts, but in all of America to have the sailing events,” Richard Davey said at the time of the announcement. The skeet and trap shooting events were originally planned for Long Island in Boston Harbor, which used to house a homeless shelter. But the new plans set their sights on Billerica, 25 miles away from Boston. There has been talk of ship-
ping the rowing events out to Worcester or up to Lowell after it was determined that the Charles River did not meet Olympic regulations. Some towns where popular sports were born, like Holyoke, the birthplace of volleyball and Springfield, the birthplace of basketball, were also suggested. Out-of-state stadiums might host the baseball events and Fenway would host only the finals. NATE HOMAN

FDA
Trans fat ban doesn’t mean you’ll never eat it Goodbye, trans fats. Well, mostly. The Food and Drug Administration officially declared that partially hydrogenated oils, the main source of trans fats in processed foods, are no longer “generally recognized
as safe” to eat. Trans fats not only raise your levels of bad cholesterol, but they also lower your levels of good cholesterol. In the statement announcing its policy change, the FDA said it expects to cut rates of coronary heart disease and prevent thousands of fatal heart attacks annually. Many companies have seen the writing on the
wall — this change has been three years in the making — and have already begun to change their recipes. But food manufacturers will have three years to figure out how to make your French fries and cupcakes healthier. But this ban doesn’t mean trans fats will never be on your plate again. The problem isn’t the low levels of naturally occurring
trans fats — it’s the extent of their use in practically everything. Many restaurants fry their food in partially hydrogenated oil to keep down costs because it stays good longer than natural oils, packaged baked goods like crackers and cookies contain trans fats to keep their texture and ready-made frosting doesn’t melt because of trans fats. Trump barges into 2016 race for president Only top 10. Trump’s first big challenge is to make it into a Fox News GOP debate in August. Real estate mogul and TV personality Donald Trump barged his way into the 2016 U.S. presidential election on Tuesday in a blitz of boasts, inflammatory comments and attacks on both fellow Republicans and President Barack Obama’s administration. Trump wallowed in political incorrectness as he insulted everyone from Mexican immigrants to Jeb Bush and U.S. ally Saudi Arabia in announcing his bid for the Republican nomination. “I will be the greatest jobs president that God ever created,” Trump predicted in a long, combative speech in the atrium of Trump Tower on Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue. The billionaire, widely seen as having almost no chance of winning the nomination, brings an outsized personality and a penchant for controversy to an unusually large group of Republicans vying for the presidency. In highly provocative comments, Trump accused Mexico of sending rapists and other criminals to live in the U.S.
“They’re sending people that have lots of problems and they’re bringing their problems,” he said. “They’re bringing drugs, they’re bringing crime, they’re rapists, and some I assume are good people, but I speak to border guards and they tell us what we are getting.” Eleven other Republicans have announced they are running for the November 2016 election. Trump hit out at Bush for backing the Common Core education initiative to set national education standards. “Bush is totally in favor of Common Core. I don’t see how he can possibly get the nomination. He’s weak on immigration, he’s in favor of Common Core. How the hell can you vote for this guy? You just can’t do it.” Republican strategists and officials cringe at the thought of Trump grabbing attention away from the party’s more serious candidates as it tries to win back the White House. Six Irish visitors killed in California balcony collapse
An apartment balcony collapsed early on Tuesday near the University of California at Berkeley, killing six people, all believed to be visiting college students from Ireland, and injuring several others. The victims, most if not all of whom were working in the San Francisco Bay area on temporary visas for summer vacation, had been celebrating a friend’s 21st birthday when the tragedy occurred, according to Irish government officials in Dublin. Pictures from the scene showed that the fourthfloor balcony gave way and pancaked onto the third-story balcony just beneath it at the Library Gardens apartment complex, about two blocks from the UC Berkeley campus across the bay from San Francisco. Amazon considering paying people to deliver packages: WSJ
Amazon is developing a mobile application that would pay ordinary people, rather than courier companies, to deliver packages en route to other destinations, the Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday. Amazon would enlist brick-and-mortar retailers in urban areas to store the packages, likely renting space from them or paying a per-package fee, the Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter.

In the recordbreaking blockbuster, Pratt’s character has a very close bond with one velociraptor in particular named Blue. How close of a bond? So close that Faris took to Twitter to voice her concerns. “Honey, what if I’m the littlest jealous of Blue?” she wrote. “I mean, she’s hot, smart and you clearly adore her. Thoughts?” Pratt himself responded, hoping to put his wife’s fears to rest. “She’s a little cold-blooded for my taste,” he tweeted. “But seriously, nothing happened.” That’s his story and he’s sticking to it.

“after all the terrible things I do”
Try to spot your favorite books in the bookstore set. / T. CHARLES ERICKSON
Review. The Huntington’s latest treads a little too close to being all talk. “After all the terrible things I do” is a nearly two-hour, twoperson gabfest from the Huntington Theatre Company that could use a good editing and a bit of an edge. Playwright A. Ray Pamatmat tackles the subject of bullying seemingly gay kids from a couple of potentially interesting angles, but the story tends to get lost in its own wordiness, at times meandering into Lifetime movie territory. Add a flimsy plot with big reveals you can figure out before you’re even comfortable in your seat, and you begin to look for distrac-
tions. The most entertaining one comes courtesy of Clint Ramos’ superb set. The story unfolds in an independent bookstore that Ramos designed to include 1,500-plus books on shelves. When the action becomes dull, it’s fun to squint and see how many titles you can read. Many of them are current, which is an impressive attention to detail. The store is owned by Linda (Tina Chilip), a divorced, Philippine immigrant living her version of the American dream. Daniel (Zachary Booth) is a recent college grad who has chosen to live with his mother in his childhood home while working at this bookstore for $7 an hour. From the moment they meet, it’s clear neither of them is telling the whole story,

DO YOU SUFFER FROM and the plot is essentially just their truths unfolding. Chilip nicely reveals Linda’s discomfort through incessant movement and a subtle inability (or maybe refusal) to look at Daniel when speaking. Booth is equally impressive, though his inability to be comfortable in his own skin manifests with a somewhat detached demeanor and a distractingly incessant need to tuck his hair behind his ears. The duo tug at your heartstrings while gradually revealing the raw edges of guilt and shame that own each of them. If only Pamatmat could find the words for their feelings. Interview. JoAnna Garcia Swisher says life as an astronaut’s wife was pretty complicated. Movies like “Apollo 13” or the HBO miniseries “From the Earth to the Moon” have given modern audiences a taste of what it was like to experience the space race in the ’60s. Daring astronauts, clever men on the ground, a race against the Soviets — it all makes for dramatic television. But there’s another side to that time period: the women the astronauts left behind when they traveled. These wives were celebrities and, for many people, represented a very public face of happy marriage. Of course, behind the scenes, the story was a little different, and that’s the story “The Astronaut Wives Club” seeks to tell. JoAnna Garcia Swisher stars as Betty Grissom, wife of Gus Grissom, and says despite the difference in eras, she found some unexpected parallels to her own life.

Real-life parallels
As someone who’s been acting for a long time, did you identify with Betty’s experience with the press? Honestly, I related a lot to it as a baseball wife. It’s a huge part of my life. I’m married to a baseball player [Nick Swisher]. I never knew that particular experience would ever directly apply to my career. But I do know what it’s like to move to a new city because of your husband’s job and rely on brand-new friends and brand-new women from all

very strong and very capable of handling the unknown and being prepared for the worst. In these particular circumstances, there were so many pressures that were put on them. When their husbands were sent off to war, they didn’t have to keep a certain household in a certain way. It was a very real situation, so the addition of all of the expectations that were put on these women added to the complete fishout-of-water experience, certainly for Betty. She definitely wasn’t the most polished of wives. She was known for speaking her mind and saying her piece. The show also has a lot of period details, like the food all the wives were serving. Oh god. I don’t even know how people survived back then. They’re all very authentic recipes. Betty was a lover of creative foods. Ikea hacks Quirky “suitcase” dresser This hack puts an eccentric twist on everyday decor. By swapping out boring old knobs for unique drawer pulls, it creates the illusion of stacked, vintage-style luggage. “I love to travel, so I painted an Ikea Rast dresser to look like suitcases stacked together,” says blogger Jen Crider of Girl in the Garage. It’s the leather scraps and old suitcase accessories that really give the finished piece some character. How to pull it off: Assemble the dresser and remove the drawers. Then stain everything but the doors. Paint the doors any color you choose. (Applying wax afterward is optional.) Swap in cool, luggage-style drawer pulls and glue on accessories like leather strips and gold accents.

Farmhouse-chic coffee table You don’t have to spend a fortune to incorporate this hot trend into your home. Blogger Natalie Dalpias of The Creative Mom cracked the code with this DIY coffee table upgrade. “I love using rustic, charming, one-of-a-kind pieces of furniture,” she says. “So when I needed a coffee table in my living room, I knew I wanted it to be a farmhouse-style coffee table. I used the Hemnes coffee table from Ikea and gave it a little facelift.” The best part? It only cost $10 in lumber and a few hours of work to create it. How to pull it off: Head to a local hardware store and pick up enough 1x4 wooden boards to cover the length of the table. (You may have to cut them, so measure the table beforehand.) Stain the boards any color you choose, then apply wax for additional protection. Glue the boards onto the tabletop using an adhesive like Liquid Nails. Then clamp the sides down while you fasten some screws on the table’s underside.

Ikea just celebrated its 30th anniversary in the U.S. What better way to honor everybody’s favorite readyto-assemble furniture company than with a roundup of supercreative hacks? We’ve scoured the Internet for the best DIY projects that turn generic pieces into furniture that wows.
High-end gold and marble shelves Looking to add some glam in your life? This hack majorly transforms an ordinary glass shelf into a luxe unit for showcasing everything from books to accent pieces. “We love this project for the simple ease of execution and the time factor,” says Erin Lepperd of Style Me Pretty. “If you can spray paint and use scissors, you’ll be a pro.” This faux high-end project is actually a totally budget-friendly piece. The transformation relies on gold spray paint and some marble contact paper— that’s it. Lepperd adds that the whole shebang shouldn’t cost more than $100. How to pull it off: Assemble the unit, then lay it outside on a drop cloth before applying three light coats of gold spray paint to the frame. Then let it dry for about half an hour. Apply a mix of beige and natural marble contact paper to the shelves, then assemble the rest of the shelf per the instructions.

Conversion More condos in the South End? The proposed redevelopment of Holy Trinity German Catholic Church in the South End has been given the go-ahead by the Boston Redevelopment Authority. The church, built in the 19th century, hasn’t been used in five years, per The Boston Globe, and it’s soon to become home to 33 condos. The design by Finegold Alexander Architects puts eight stories of condos inside the church, which will remain structurally independent, and adds a 28-car parking garage. But is everyone in favor of the change? While the South End has long been trending toward the wealthy, the church itself was once home to charitable programs for the homeless and at-risk youth. “Do luxury condos at a South End church rip the soul out of Boston?” asked one recent Globe op-ed by Joan Vennochi. She also pointed out that the BRA is not requiring the building to include low-income housing because “no zoning variances were necessary.” The building will join other high-end housing in the South End, such as the Ink Block development. Many people would benefit from salt labels
and for those people eating salt-laden restaurant meals risks their health. What’s wrong with providing the information that allows them to protect their health, while allowing everyone else to continue to eat what they want?
Re: ‘With a grain of salt’ (Metro, June 16) Eva Kis starts out with a shaky argument against restaurant salt labeling when she compares it to proposals to ban large sodas. Obviously, providing information about food is a lot different than banning it. Seventy million Americans have high blood pressure,
(Metro, June 16) A new salt labeling proposal is highly necessary. More than onethird of U.S. adults are obese or overweight. We need to focus more on our health rather than what’s going to make our foods taste good. Humans were not created to consume the processed junk that is on the market today. Processed foods are loaded with sodium. Having salt labels would make people more aware of their nutrient consumption, which may result in better

food choices. You also make it seem as if salt is the only seasoning that can make food taste good. There are so many healthy seasonings on the market that can make home-cooked meals taste great (pepper, oregano, garlic, etc.). If it’s going to make me more aware, then I am for it. It’s not surprising to see how much success the Cardinals have had this season given preseason expectations. What is surprising is the amount of success they’ve had with all the injuries. Adam Wainwright, Lance Lynn, Matt Holliday and Matt Adams have all gone down this year.

Dodgers (37-27)
Pirates (36-27)
Mets (35-30)
Yankees (34-29)
The Dodgers’ plus-57 rundifferential is the second best in the NL as they have opened a 3.5-game advantage in the NL West. Zach Greinke has picked up his play since April, owning a 1.95 ERA.
Along with Gerrit Cole’s dominance from the mound, Starling Marte’s 45 RBIs are fifth in the NL. Pittsburgh has won seven of 10 but it is having trouble gaining any ground on St. Louis.
New York is back on top of the NL East standings as it has won two straight and for the year is 25-11 at home. They DFA’d pitcher Dillon Gee on Monday, probably a wise move.
Although the Yankees have fallen out of first place in the AL East, it doesn’t mean they have played poorly of late. Mark Teixeira’s 18 homers and 48 RBIs are the most in the American League.

Houston has rebounded, winning two straight, but it has still dropped seven of 10. With the AL West being as poor as it is, the Astros still hold a 2.5game division lead.
Don’t look now but the Rays have won four straight and are now in first place in the AL East. Chris Archer has led the way with seven wins and a sparkling 2.00 ERA.
Like the Pirates, the Cubs can’t gain ground on St. Louis. Jon Lester has been under some scrutiny for not yet performing like the ace he was assigned to be.
The Rangers looked like they were going nowhere in April but they’re now just 2.5 games behind Houston. Prince Fielder’s 45 RBIs are tied for third in the AL.

The Royals have played .500 ball of late but with the Twins struggling greatly, Kansas City has taken over the top spot in a competitive American League Central.
The Twins have fallen back to Earth, losing eight of their last 10 games to now trail the Royals by 2.5 games in the AL Central. Still, Glen Perkins leads all of baseball with 22 saves.
Detroit has won six of their last 10, but remains three games behind the Royals and is in third place in the division. Miguel Cabrera’s .344 average is tops in the AL, however.

Pedroia, Bogaerts the lone winners MLB. The Red Sox’s second baseman and shortstop have been the only bright spots.
Xander Bogaerts and Dustin Pedroia look to turn a double-play earlier this season. / GETTY IMAGES
Though the Red Sox have been a disaster of late — losing seven straight games going into Tuesday — there are two players, at least, doing everything they can to turn things around. Dustin Pedroia and Xander Bogaerts aren’t dogging it. Collecting two hits Monday night, Pedroia extended his hit streak to six games and he’s now hit safely in 15 straight home games, batting .413 in those contests. It’s the longest single-season streak since Jacoby Ellsbury hit in 18 straight home games back in 2011. Pedroia also was the only player to speak out on the state

in the Sox lineup. He’s even moved up to the No. 5 spot in the order, as Mike Napoli has dropped down to seventh. In the month of June, Bogaerts has a slash line of .333/.357/.463. It isn’t just at the plate where Bogaerts has excelled this season, either. The shortstop looks like a completely different player from last season in the field as he has taken more control on pop-ups and generally appears more confident. He has also taken on a leadership role — as much as a player in his second full MLB season can. Bogaerts has been the defacto team spokesman through the trying times of late, being the one to speak to the media following losses. RYAN HANNABLE @RyanHannable sports@metro.us

of the team following their team meeting prior to Monday’s game. Though he may not be a vocal leader by nature, he’s been forced into becoming one and has emerged as a clubhouse leader. “That’s the competitor he is, manager John Farrell said after Monday’s game. “Couple of base hits, he gets on with a walk, on base three times. He gives you everything he’s got every day he walks on the field. For the season, Pedroia is batting .313, the highest on the team, and since being moved up to the leadoff spot — perhaps something he doesn’t particularly like doing — he’s hitting .368 with an on-base percentage of .406 in 23 games. Bogaerts had his seasonhigh nine-game hit streak snapped on Sunday, but remains one of the hottest hitters
