On a Wednesday night in Back Bay at Capital One 360 Café, gamers crushed free sandwiches and sodas and hollered as players kicked, grappled and slashed Nintendo avatars on three TVs, while the theme from Zelda played overhead through ceiling speakers. It was the third and final night of a Boston tournament for the blockbuster video game Super Smash Bros., the colorful fighter that’s been among the most popular ever since its first title release in 1999. In Boston and around the country, at a time when video games have morphed into spectator sports and gamer culture in some form is near universal for Americans of a certain age, Super Smash Bros. is king. “Just the demographics, the age group gets between younger and older people. It just appeals to more people and it’s casual and competitive. I think that’s why everybody loves it,” said Dan Lanza, organizer and host of Double Tap, a twoperson gaming event planning company. Double Tap hosted the tournament at the café — free to all thanks to sponsorship from the bank and its marketing outpost/coffee shop. Since it first appeared in living rooms everywhere via the N64 console, Smash has been the ultimate in one-sizefits-all gaming, gamers told Metro. One big reason behind its staying power, they said, is

the game’s even fun when you aren’t any good. “That guy, he hit me, like, three times, and he had a lot of fun doing it,” said Marc Maggiore, 19, whose Ness character had just finished stomping over his challenger’s Charizard. For Maggiore, it’s the easygoing community that is most attractive about the game. He bonded over hours and hours playing the game with college friends at Colgate University in upstate New York, and said he’s gotten involved in the Massachusetts tournament scene while home for the summer. He met another Smash enthusiast on Facebook just a few days before the tournament, he said. They lived near by, so met up and played for three hours. “He whooped my ass for three hours, but it was good,” he said.

Starting young

Building skills to be the best fighter The obsession with the game, for many, starts early. The Boston tournament was the first for Max Hopkins, a 19-year-old Harvard undergrad from Seattle. But Hopkins said he’s been playing since the second grade, crafting his skills casually over a decade and developing strategy for the deceptively simple fighter. “It’s just your skill — what you can do in the moment, how fast you are, how you can read the other player. It’s just a really in-the-moment experience,” he said. “We’re still seeing new

things in Melee, and it’s been years,” he said. Smash culture, and Melee culture in particular, thrives on college campuses. Most public in Boston are face-offs between schools, like last year’s battle that featured

Sedatives. Cosby admitted to giving drugs to women in 2005: AP Legendary comedian Bill Cosby admitted in 2005 that he got sedatives in the hope of drugging young women he wanted to have sex with, and that he gave at least one of the pills — Quaaludes — to at least one woman and “other people,” the Associated Press reported Monday night. Cosby, 77, made the admis-

sion during his testimony in a civil case brought by a former Temple University employee, Andrea Constand, who alleged that Cosby tricked her into taking drugs before he sexually assaulted her. The case was settled for an undisclosed sum but the documents in the case were unsealed yesterday after the

Associated Press went to court. Cosby’s lawyers had argued that the documents would cause severe embarrassment to the comedian-actor, who is best known for playing

Dr. Cliff Huxtable on the hit TV series “The Cosby Show” in the 1980s and ’90s. A representative for Cosby did not immediately respond to requests for comment last night. More than 40 women have come forward in the past year alleging Cosby drugged and sexually assaulted them in

incidents dating back decades. Cosby has never been criminally charged over the allegations but his career has taken a hit in the past year with TV projects and live shows being canceled. He also stepped down last year from the board of trustees at Temple University, his alma mater. REUTERS

Mystery. Two weeks and still no answers on ‘Baby Doe’

Tel 617-895-7771 | www.newenglandreglaze.com

The tragic story of an unidentified child’s unexplained death reads like a crime novel from Boston author Dennis Lehane: The identity of a little girl, known only as “Baby Doe,” remains a mystery two weeks after a dog walker found her lifeless body and a zebra print blanket inside a plastic bag on Deer Island. “I don’t know how a child could be missing this long and no one knows anything about her,” Lt. Daniel Richard, spokesman for the Massachusetts State Police, told Metro on Monday. That question is one that has circulated social media and news media throughout the nation since last month. As of Monday, more than 43 million people had seen a state police Facebook post asking for help identifying the girl, who is estimated to be 4 years old, Richards said. But still, investigators have no leads. An autopsy proved inconclusive, and though the Suffolk County district attorney called her death “unnatural,”

Investigators released a composite image of the girl along with photos of her leggings and blanket. / PROVIDED, SUFFOLK DA

the death is not being treated as a homicide. The Suffolk district attorney’s office declined to comment on whether the bag washed up on shore had been tied shut. “Our No. 1 priority is identifying her,” DA spokesman Jake Wark said. “We won’t be ready to discuss any charges or anything related to a criminal investigation, if there are any, until we determine who she is or the cause of her death.” Figuring out who she is or

how she died is far more difficult than TV shows or movies make it seem. “Real life isn’t TV,” Wark said. “You can only check fingerprints and DNA in a database system where people have either submitted their prints or have been arrested.” Authorities stressed that they will protect the identity of anyone with information on Baby Doe. This includes undocumented immigrants who might be reluctant to come forward. “In a case this tragic, the

authorities want to get to the bottom of the situation, they have no interest in offering someone up for deportation,” Massachusetts immigration attorney Matthew Maiona told Metro. “The Boston Police and local community police departments … are in the business of solving crimes,” Maiona said. “When a child is found deceased, we’re talking about something so heinous that they won’t care who brings them the information.” NATE HOMAN

Pope draws half million to outdoor Mass in Ecuador

Pope Francis celebrated Mass for more than half a million Ecuadorians on Monday and hinted he wanted a major Vatican gathering this year to find ways to reach out to Catholics who feel excluded by the church. On the first full day of a three-nation “homecoming” trip to South America, the Argentine-born pontiff was in Ecuador’s second city, Guayaquil, a steamy port sometimes referred to as the world’s “banana capital,” given its bustling fruit trade. In line with his simple style, he rode into the city in a small silver Fiat.

Smell flowers, not smoke: Seattle parks curb cigarettes

Smoking cigarettes and other tobacco products in Seattle’s parks became illegal on Monday, as the Pacific Northwest’s largest city joined other American metropolises in restricting puffing in public. Seattle’s Parks and Recreation officials voted in May to ban smoking in all of its 465 parks. It had previously required smokers to maintain 25-feet minimum distances from other visitors in any publicly accessible park. On Monday, the city, on its website, encouraged parkgoers to “smell flowers, not smoke.” REUTERS

Historic flyby of Pluto on track despite glitch

A man dressed as a security guard walked out of an Oklahoma Wal-Mart with $75,000 in cash, a crime that went undetected until the real security guards showed up later to transport the money, police said. The suspect walked into the Wal-Mart on Saturday in Bristow, southwest of Tulsa, dressed in clothes similar to those of a Loomis armored truck employee. He went to the cash office, signed a deposit slip and walked away with the money, Bristow Police said. Police were called when the real Loomis personnel arrived less than an hour later.

NASA said it expects the New Horizons spacecraft to be back in service on Tuesday after a computer glitch over the weekend threatened its upcoming historic flyby of Pluto. Nearing the end of a nine-and-a-half-year journey to the solar system’s unexplored outer reaches, New Horizons shut down radio communications with Earth for a nail-biting 81 minutes. The cause of the problem was a timing flaw in the final batch of software uploaded to the spacecraft. The mission will provide the first up-close observations of Pluto when it passes within 7,800 miles of the icy planet at around 7:50 a.m. ET on July 14.

Suspect who shot and killed woman on pier was on probation A 32-year-old Pleasanton, California, native was shot in the chest on Pier 14 in San Francisco at 6:30 p.m. last Wednesday, SFGate reports. Kathryn Steinle collapsed and her father, Jim, performed CPR until the paramedics arrived and rushed Steinle to San Francisco General Hospital where she died two hours later. Suspect Francisco Sanchez was detained shortly after the killing, and it is unknown whether the shooting had a target or not. Sanchez was on probation at the time of the shooting. A gun believed to have been used in the shooting was recovered in the water next to the pier by police dive teams on Thursday, KGO TV reports. Gillian Christensen, spokesperson for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, said Sanchez had been previously deported five times, most recently in 2009, USA Today reports.

Germany, France warn time is running out Not much time. German Chancellor Angela Merkel urged Greece to put proposals on the table this week after voters reject terms of bailout in referendum.

France and Germany told Greece to come up with serious proposals in order to restart financial aid talks, raising pressure on Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras to compromise a day after his country voted overwhelmingly against more austerity. After a meeting in Paris, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President

Expert on Greek future. So-called ‘Grexit’ would be catastrophic for Greece What will the future bring? Yulie Foka-Kavalieraki, a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Athens and cofounder of GreekCrisis.net, gives her insight. What effect will the “no” result have on negotiations with the EU? I suppose they’re still open to seeing one proposal in good faith by the Greek government, but they’ll certainly hold on to their minimum terms for substantial and specific reforms, as they have done all these years of the Greek crisis. Tsipras will try to use the result of the referendum as a bargaining chip at the negotiations. He definitely hopes that the European partners will accept a new agreement that will include debt relief in order to satisfy the “no” voters. Will it mean a Grexit? The “no” vote of the

referendum may well offer, to some European leaders, an excuse to push Greece out of the eurozone. This will probably have minimal consequences for Europe, but it will be devastating for Greece because its economy could never support an independent currency without a production base. So a Grexit would be catastrophic for Greece. A Grexit is the worst-case scenario. DMITRY BELYAEV, MWN

Francois Hollande said Athens must move quickly if it wants to secure a cash-for-reform deal with international creditors and avoid crashing out of the eurozone. Raising the stakes on the Greek leader ahead of a eurozone summit on Tuesday, the European Central Bank decided to keep a tight grip on funding to Greek banks, which have

been closed for more than a week to avoid a massive outflow of money that could lead to their collapse. The ECB also decided to raise the amount of collateral Greek banks must post for any loans. The move doesn’t affect the lenders right away, but it was a warning shot by the ECB to Greek banks that their fate lies in its hands.

And a German finance ministry official dismissed the idea that Berlin would be willing to concede some debt relief to Athens, a position that Tsipras’ government has long sought. Still, in a sign that Athens is keen to seek a new deal, Greece’s combative finance minister, Yanis Varoufakis, resigned, apparently under pressure from other eurozone

finance ministers who did not want him as a negotiating partner. Tsipras had earlier promised Merkel that Greece would bring a proposal for a deal to an emergency summit of eurozone leaders on Tuesday, a Greek official said. It was unclear how much it would differ from other proposals rejected in the past. REUTERS

Apparently for Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher, the saying goes, “First comes love, then comes baby, then comes a supersecret holiday weekend wedding where all your friends and family are sworn to silence.” Doesn’t really have the same ring to it, though. So apparently Billy Joel wasn’t the only person perusing the “How to surprise your loved ones with a wedding” archives on Goop, as Kunis and Kutcher officially tied the knot over the holiday weekend at some place called the Secret Garden at Parrish Ranch, which is

secluded and surrounded by apple orchards and an hour-and-a-half drive from Los Angeles. And honestly, if you’re close to Kunis and Kutcher, and they invite you out to a Fourth of July party at something called “the Secret Garden,” that should already be enough of a clue. Also, this is becoming enough of a trend that we need a better term than “surprise wedding.” How about “ninja wedding”? That would totally make it OK to incorporate smoke bombs into the ceremony, right? Ladies, back me up here.

But some folks — namely Vulture’s Jesse David Fox — are suggesting that Lovato staged the whole thing to corner the lovable klutz market. That’s pretty crafty, if she did. Emilia Clarke: More than Daenerys Targaryen Interview. The “Terminator Genisys” star isn’t just a “Game of Thrones” staple.

One more thing

You have said in various interviews that you don’t want to do nude scenes with every project.

Emilia Clarke doesn’t want to be typecast. The “Game of Thrones” star, who plays the determined Mother of Dragons Daenerys Targaryen, has said she’s reluctant to do nudity — one of the reasons she turned down “Fifty Shades of Grey.” “I have done naked scenes before, and I was worried about being stigmatized by doing it again,” she admits. Now she’s in “Terminator Genisys,” playing a much fiercer character than Anastasia Steele: Sarah Connor, the mother of postapocalyptic revolutionary John Connor (Jason Clarke), who in the film’s own timeline has been fighting alongside nice killer cyborg T-800 (Arnold Schwarzenegger, again) since childhood. Do you feel you’ve been lucky with the roles that you’ve received? If being lucky means being able to work for many years seeking an opportunity, then yes, I’ve been lucky. Television gave me a boost, but I don’t want people to remember me as Daenerys Targaryen from “Game of Thrones.”

One of the few splurges for the film: the plaid Jean Paul Gaultier outfit Cher wore for the first day of school.

A note about kombucha You may have heard about people getting sick from homemade kombucha, which is fermented tea. There’s an important difference from regular fermentation. “With kombucha, it’s an aerobic process, which means it needs oxygen to do its job,” explains Whitsitt. Since kombucha is allowed to “breathe,” things like mold can get inside. If it looks or smells funky, don’t take chances.

Going vegan is so last year — the new trend is to eat food that’s alive. A recent study of New England college students found that those who describe themselves as neurotic felt less social anxiety if they exercised and ate more fruits, vegetables and, crucially, probiotic foods like tofu, sauerkraut and yogurt. The microbiome has been getting a lot of attention, but research on good bacteria in our gut and its ability to influence our physical and mental well-being is just beginning. Fermentation is one experiment you can try easily and safely at home. We asked Tara Whitsitt, whose love of food grew into her mobile kitchen-workshop Fermentation on Wheels, to give us a primer.

How safe is it? “Food fermentation is very safe. If anything, they’re safer than canned goods because

Will it make my apartment smell? “If you’re concerned about the smell, maybe introduce kimchi later. But sauerkraut, cucumber pickles, kombucha, sourdough, kefir — these foods don’t have a huge effect on the smell in your space.”

Find a jar with a wide enough mouth: Fermentation is an anaerobic process, so you’ll need to put something on top of your veggies to make sure they stay underwater.

What should I avoid? “Temperature fluctuations are not ideal; it’s best to have a temperature-stable space, between 68 and 76 degrees.”

Will I smell?

How long does it take?

“If anything, it’s going to make you smell better; you’ll be healthier and your skin is going to look nicer.”

It’s subjective and depends on the vegetable (water-heavy ones like cucumber ferment faster). Whitsitt used sauerkraut as an example: “If you like your sauerkraut milder, ferment it for a week. If you like it more sour, three weeks to a month — it’ll be funkier.”

What do I need to start? Fermentation is “just salt and vegetables,” says Whitsitt.

SWEENEY NOT OFF THE HOOK JUST YET FOR DOUGIE TRADE It seems as though many are apologizing to Bruins general manger Don Sweeney in the last few days. Much of that has to do with the realization that Dougie Hamilton did not want to play in Boston. When Hamilton was traded for a trio of draft picks just hours before the NHL Draft, it left a lot of us searching for answers in a somewhat angry tone. Since then, Sweeney has made some nice moves. Most recently, he stole 27-year-old free-agent winger Matt Beleskey from the Anaheim Ducks with a five-year, $19 million deal, and traded for 6-foot-6 forward, and Dorchester native, Jimmy Hayes. It’s clear what Sweeney is looking for: grit, passion, heart, and most importantly, pride. The type of pride that comes along with donning the spoked-B on your jersey, wanting to play in a hockey-crazed city like Boston. It’s also pretty clear that that’s not something Hamilton wanted to do. So the Bruins traded him to the Calgary Flames for a first- and two second-round picks. Following plenty of initial anger around New England, apologies thrown Sweeney’s way have ensued. While I think the acquisitions of Beleskey and Hayes are smart additions for a GM who’s trying to put a competitor on the ice next year, I’m

not here to apologize for my harsh criticism of the Hamilton trade, even after seeing that Hamilton didn’t want to be here. One thing that people fail to mention is that Hamilton was a “restricted” free agent. Had another team sent an offer sheet his way — which is something that’s very rare, by the way — all the Bruins had to do was match it and he remains in Boston. If there was

no offer sheet from another team, then Hamilton ultimately had no leverage. After all, he was a restricted free agent. What was he going to do, sit out the season? Give me a break. The Bruins could have played hardball, and they didn’t. All because they didn’t want to spend the money on a 22-year-old top-pair defenseman who wanted out of town. But here’s what I know: money talks. And an easy cure

for an unhappy pro athlete is a big contract. Even though Hamilton’s deal with Calgary (six years, $34.5 million) is only $1.5 million more than what the Bruins’ final offer was, you can’t convince me that Hamilton would have turned down $7 million per season to stay in Boston. I don’t care how much he disliked it here. Some say that would have been overpaying. Not me. I believe he’s worth that kind

of money. And the Bruins will regret not “overpaying” him and making him happy, in my honest opinion. I mean, we’re talking about a team that’s now traded two top-four defensemen for draft picks in less than a calendar year. The other two top-four D-men? Zdeno Chara and Dennis Seidenberg. Those two aren’t getting any younger. Hamilton is a franchisecaliber player. He has the type of skill-set for a young defenseman that every team in the league is looking for. But when he began to cry about Boston, the Bruins acted quickly and shipped him off to Calgary. Surely, Hamilton gets some of the blame. But I still can’t let the Bruins off the hook. And yes, Sweeney’s made some nice moves the last couple of days. It’s led to a lot of media and fans apologizing to him for the way they angrily reacted to the Hamilton trade. Just don’t consider me one of them.
