The next seat-wobbling, smell-o-rific frontier in movie-watching has arrived, just outside Boston. The Showcase Cinema de Lux in Revere last week premiered its new MX4D Motion EFX technology — the first of its kind on the East Coast — which executives hope will help them compete with online streaming services and the many ways to be entertained at home. The official debut was on Thursday night. I couldn’t pass up the unusual invitation we got to try it out, so I went. Through a back-door VIP entrance, there was a ritzy roll-out event stocked with free champagne, a massive ice sculpture and bite-size beef Wellington. “The next evolution in cinema” proclaimed a promotional video on loop next to the open bar. That’s where I met Dan

‘Jurassic World’ The demo film Showcase rolled out for the premiere was, of course, Jurassic World, the loud, stomping-and-chomping blockbuster that dominated the box office this summer. The movie starts out slowly, and the first thing you notice about 4D is how it amplifies the boredom of the scenesetting first half hour or so. You get the sense that programmers add effects to the slow parts, just because. At one point, during B roll of a plane leaving an airport, the seats lean back to simulate

takeoff. Then the protagonists are on a ferry, and the seats list from side-to-side, as if on waves. Elevator doors close and for some reason your 4D seat buzzes. Some of the features are a little clunky — the air fan, for example, seems to have two settings: in your face and off. It’s also not clear what the rules are on perspective. Are you, in the eyes of 4D programmers, inside the helicopter, swaying with it side to side, or watching it from afar? When the action really gets going, though, the system shines.

“You’re not going to see ‘50 Shades of Grey’ in 4D.” Dan Jamele, VP and CTO of Mediamotion Jamele, vice president and chief technology officer for Mediamation, the Californian company that outfitted the Showcase theatre with the mechanical pieces, tubes and blasters that make up the cinema’s fourth-dimensional motion, water and smells. A team of six Mediamation

engineers adds the effects, he told me. They churn out 4D programming for about one movie a week. The workload is highest during the summer blockbuster season, he said. Which makes sense, I offered. The fourth dimension would probably add little to romantic comedies, the Oscar

All the extra stimulation during the violent scenes is actually terrifying, and the anticipation of waiting for whatever wacky thing your seat will do next adds something weird and exciting to the moviegoing experience. There are “leg ticklers” that lightly thwack your calves. This happens during an in-forest T. rex attack to simulate swirling leaves, and the effect really does amp up the anxiety. There are unsettling — but not painful — punches in the back, which work as sympathy pains when people get hurt, such as when some park

faves or dramatic book adaptations. “You’re not going to see ‘50 Shades of Grey’ in 4D,” he said. The investment is the latest in the theatre chain’s moves to up the ante in their multiplexes. It recently replaced its standard theatre seats with luxury recliners and installed an “X-plus” wide-screen theatre. “We put a lot of money into this theatre,” said Tony Pungitore, director of operations for National Amusements. “We spent a lot of money on tech-

henchmen get tossed around and crack their spines against trees, or when they fall from a catwalk two stories up. There are the gross-out moments, such as when the characters wash up on a boggy shore and the audience gets blasted with mud smell, or when water mist blasters simulate a dino’s damp snort. At one point, some of the mist hit me in the mouth. A lot of fun, basically. Maybe MX4D is the future of the movies, and maybe it isn’t. Is it worth trying? Yes. SPENCER BUELL

nology and will continue to do so.” No one would tell me exactly how much it cost to 4D-ify the Revere theatre, but Jamele said the price tag usually ranges between $300,000 and $1 million. And with tickets for consumers priced at $16.50$22.50, a lot of cash is being spent on the promise of the technology. SPENCER BUELL @METROBOS

VR. The city’s designers, educators, gamers and hobbyists are preparing for the coming explosion of virtual reality content. The revolution will be virtualized, and Boston will be ready. That’s what the developers, artists and businesspeople of the Boston/Cambridge virtual reality community told Metro this month as we dove deep into the up-and-coming world of VR. The idea of immersive entertainment isn’t new. Researchers and hobbyists have been tinkering with equipment for decades. But thanks to the emergence of new, affordable hardware, Bostonarea insiders say, VR is about to explode. The excitement in the city is palpable. “I’m like a three-year-old on a sugar high. You wouldn’t believe it,” said Jeffrey Jacobson, a VR consultant who’s an industry veteran. Jacobson is one of the organizers of Boston’s uncommonly popular virtual reality meetup, which every month draws more than 100 enthusiasts. With over 1,300 members and counting, it’s the fifth largest

of its kind in the world. Its members have big ideas. From art and game design to architecture and medicine, Boston industry leaders told Metro, strap-on headsets could bring huge improvements to education, medicine, entertainment and design. Because this is the beginning of big change, innova-

tors here told Metro they are scrambling to be among the first and best in their field, pivoting from work in 2D to building immersive environments and games. “I really doubled down on VR because I really feel like that’s where the opportunity is,” said Jono Forbes from Boston gaming company Defective Studios. His company is making a world-building game — kind of a distant cousin of MineCraft — called VRMT. He said the group of gamers in Boston is close-knit, and less brutally competitive than in other global tech hubs. “It’s a smaller pool, and

it feels like you can get traction easier here than in Silicon Valley, where there’s too much noise,” he said. “Everybody sees an opportunity, but moreover is just really, really excited by the technology.” At the center of the VR universe: Oculus. It’s affordable, it works and, thanks to a $2 billion buy-in from Facebook last year, it has name recognition. Developers have had access to it for more than a year, and it’s set to become available to consumers in 2016. For Boston’s indie programmers and startups, sources told Metro, that means the clock is ticking. Sitting in a conference room at the Cambridge Innovation Center, Amedeo Mapelli fired up his desktop computer and demonstrated SIMITRI, the project he’s been fine-tuning for a decade. It’s a tool like Photoshop that helps artists make projects such as interactive music videos, then plunk the viewer inside. And, he told Metro, he needs to finish it, now. “Before, I was like, ‘I can kind of do this indefinitely,’ Now there is pressure, definitely,” he said. SPENCER BUELL @MetroBOS

Five children, three adults killed in Texas

Eight people, five of them children, were killed at a house in Houston and a suspect in the shooting surrendered to police after an hourlong standoff, police officials said. Sheriff deputies went to the home on a welfare check about 9 p.m. Saturday, police officials said. They called for backup after learning there was a man inside the home wanted for aggravated assault, KHOU TV reported. When deputies spotted the body of child through a window, they tried to force their way inside but had to pull back when the suspect shot at them. After a standoff with authorities, the suspect surrendered. REUTERS

Questions abound in police shooting death of black Texas teen

About 150 homes evacuated in Ariz. wildfire

Texas police on Sunday were trying to figure out what prompted a black teenager to drive his car into a car dealership, and why a white police officer still in training fatally shot the unarmed 19-year-old four times. Christian Taylor became the latest unarmed black man to die at the hands of a white police officer after officials said he was seen on security surveillance tape vandalizing cars at an auto dealership in Arlington. Taylor was shot four times by Arlington police officer Brad Miller, 49, who was still undergoing training with the department.

A raging fire in a wildlife refuge in northwestern Arizona near the California border is forcing the evacuation of about 150 homes, fire officials said. Authorities ordered the mandatory evacuations from homes in the rural area after the wildfire sparked on Saturday afternoon grew to 2,000 acres in the Havasu National Wildlife Refuge, said Bureau of Land Management spokeswoman Dolores Garcia. The American Red Cross had set up a shelter for displaced residents. “This is a major one and we’re aggressively trying to fight it,” Garcia said of the fast-moving fire. REUTERS

Rubio defends his stance on abortion Abortion. For Rubio, taking a bold stance against exceptions could hurt his standing with women. Florida Senator Marco Rubio on Sunday defended his stance against abortion without exceptions for rape or when a mother’s life was in danger that he was asked about during a debate among Republican presidential candidates on Thursday. “I personally and deeply believe that all human life is worthy of the protection of our laws. I do. And I believe that irrespective of the conditions by which that life was conceived, or anything else, and for me to be consistent on that belief,” Rubio said on NBC’s “Meet the

Press.” During Thursday night’s debate, Rubio said he never advocated for any exceptions on abortion, including when conception occurs following rape or incest or when the mother’s life is in danger. However, Rubio supported

such exceptions when he cosponsored the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act in 2013, which aimed to ban latestage abortions. On Sunday, Rubio denied any inconsistency. He said that while he does not support such exceptions, he would not rule

them out if the overall result is fewer abortions. “I recognize that in order to have consensus on laws that limit the number of abortions, a lot of people want to see those exceptions,” he said on NBC. Rubio said he recognized that women have the right to make decisions about their own bodies, but that clashes with “the right of a human being to live.” “I don’t say it’s easy,” Rubio said. “But when asked to make a decision between two very hard circumstances, I personally reached the decision, if I’m going to err, I’m going to err on the side of life.” Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker and former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee have also said they do not support abortion in any cases. Safety. Ride share UberX might save lives: Study Ride share service uberX isn’t just getting scrutiny from local regulators. Researchers at Temple’s Fox School of Business say the controversial service might even save lives. In their paper “Show Me the Way to Go Home: An Empirical Investigation of Ride Sharing and Alcohol Related Motor Vehicle Homicide,” scholars Brad N. Greenwood and Sunil Wattal report that in California, “the entrance of uberX result[ed] in a 3.6 percent - 5.6 percent decrease in the rate of motor vehicle homicides per quarter in the state of California.” In other words, uberX has a positive impact on reducing drunk driving. The study goes on to say that traditional — and in Philly, legal — Uber services do not have the same impact on DUIs. There’s something special about the uberX service itself. “While the entry of uberX strongly and negatively affects the number of motor vehicle

homicides,” the report says, “limited evidence exists to support previous claims that this occurs with the Uber black car service as well.” Despite the PPA and even the Philadelphia Police Department performing sting operations to thwart uberX’s unauthorized expansion into the Philly market, uberX celebrated more than 1 million rides back in April. Since that time, uberX has found itself fighting authorities in court over whether ride sharing violates local regulations on taxicab and like services. Every time thus far, the courts have sided with authorities. UberX, the ride sharing app’s low-cost option, essentially empowers everyday people with cars to act as de facto cab drivers, picking up users and dropping them off via Uber’s app. Local authorities say that if someone wants to operate as would a taxi driver, then that person needs to be regulated like one, too. Miley Cyrus slams Taylor Swift’s ‘Bad Blood’ Miley Cyrus and I apparently see eye to eye on a lot of things, including Taylor Swift. Well, sort of. While my Swift gripes are more broad and far-reaching, Cyrus is taking issue with one particular move — namely, Swift’s much-hyped “Bad Blood” music video. “I don’t get the violence revenge thing,” she tells Marie Clare. “That’s supposed to be a good example? And I’m a bad role model because I’m running around with my titties out? I’m not sure how titties are worse than guns.” Ain’t that America, right? Cyrus has other insights that are genuinely awesome, like her take on showbiz double standards: “Kendrick Lamar sings about LSD and he’s cool. I do it and I’m a druggie whore,” she says. Rockin’ out with Rick Springfield Interview. The rock star and Grammy winner was nervous playing Meryl Streep’s boy toy. Rick Springfield had just rung the closing bell at the New York Stock Exchange when our phone call began. “I stopped major companies from trading,” he says, chuckling at the craziness of it all. Talking to him, it’s clear he’s not the kind of guy who puts an end to corporate trading. He’s modest and self-effacing, friendly and willing to talk openly and honestly about anything, including what has been a bizarre career. For instance, when Springfield had his biggest song — “Jessie’s Girl” — he was in the middle of a two-year stint on “General Hospital.” He also wrote an acclaimed memoir, plus, last year, a best-selling novel, “Magnificent Vibration.” Right now he’s in “Ricki and the Flash,” starring opposite no less than Meryl Streep in a film

by Jonathan Demme. He plays Greg, part of an aging, small-time cover band fronted by Streep’s Ricki. “He wanted someone to sell the fact that this guy is supposed to be a really good guitar player who never made it,” Springfield tells us. “There’s a scene that was actually cut about Greg being on the cover of a guitar magazine in the ’80s — a shredder magazine. He settled into the fact that he had his shot, but he’s happy to

still be playing his guitar.” Springfield himself still plays big concerts, and his 18th album is due at year’s end. But he really liked the portrayal of those who hadn’t had his luck. “There’s a sadness to that, but it’s also kind of cool. There’s a lot of damaged people in that story,” he says. “It’s what I loved about the movie.” They did play live. “Since we were a cover band, it would have looked odd if it

was lip- synched to perfect tracks, like most music in films. [Demme] wanted it rough and ready and real.” Streep herself learned how to play guitar before the shoot. Springfield got to see the Oscar winner nervous, which he says “was very heartening for me, who was nervous to be in a movie with Meryl Streep.” MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

On acting “Ricki and the Flash” arrives almost concurrently with Springfield’s stint as a shady psychiatrist on “True Detective.” He hasn’t seen it. “I generally don’t like to see stuff that I’ve done,” he admits. “A lot of my friends emailed me and said, ‘Dude, you creeped me out so bad.’” Of course, Springfield is a seasoned actor, even if the role that first made him famous didn’t come easily. “Soap opera acting is incredibly difficult for me,” he confesses. “It became all about line memorization. You just don’t have the time to work on the character. You have so much dialogue. It’s nothing to do with acting. It’s just like picking up a hammer to build a house. It’s just something you have to do. There are a lot of actors on soaps who are incredible at it. I always found it very difficult.”

‘Starship Troopers’ Jeremy Renner got his breakthrough with 2008’s best picture winner, “The Hurt Locker.”/ PROVIDED

‘The Hurt Locker’ Netflix Instant Hollywood has been struggling to turn Jeremy Renner into a movie star, but it doesn’t seem to take. He’s been great in his big-budget fare, steely and driven. But he’s not a movie star; he’s too remote for that. He’s a character actor, and a brilliant one. He was thrilling in Kathryn Bigelow’s Oscar-winner “The Hurt Locker,” but what he was really doing was a twist on an old type: the reckless hero who doesn’t play by the rules. As a rock star IED disposer in the Iraq War, he’s playing a charac-

ter who could easily have slipped into Bigelow’s “Point Break.” But Renner makes his cockiness playful; even when things get rough, he cracks a grin, one that erodes as the film wears on into something more ambivalent. That doesn’t work when you’re the head of blockbusters; Tom Cruise always lets you in. But it definitely works when you’re in offbeat fare, or when you’re the dude who knows how to shoot a mean bow from an arrow.

Netflix Instant Speaking of war movies, there was a time, upon the release of Paul Verhoeven’s effects-heavy winky rabblerouser, when people seriously didn’t get that it was a deeply sarcastic joke — a bone-cutting satire on war movies that was in essence a fake propaganda movie from a grim future. It’s certainly anything but subtle: Verhoeven intercuts segments using the language of “Why We Fight” and other WWII-era propaganda into his soapy tale, starring a host of actors from “90210” and elsewhere. It’s savage and funny, implicating the viewer for getting caught up in unspeakably grisly action.

BOOKS

No such thing as ‘just a game’ Novel. Christopher Yates’ “Black Chalk” explores the dark side of “friendly competition.” As a puzzle and crossword maker, it’s no surprise Christopher Yates enjoys a good game. But his novel “Black Chalk” takes the idea of friendly competition to a whole new level, implying that life itself is a game. “Why else do you think we call ourselves the human race?” the book asks. “There’s a quote I like from Gore Vidal: ‘Every time a friend succeeds, I die a little,’” Christopher Yates says. “Some people say it’s a great quote and really expresses something true. Other people are absolutely mystified. They can’t understand the idea of being jealous by someone

else’s success.”

Truth and consequences The book is about six friends studying at Oxford University who make up a game. At first, the consequences of losing a round are silly. But over time, the consequences become

life-altering, at times deeply humiliating, and ultimately change the players forever. “I came up with the idea for the very game with a friend when I was at Oxford,” Yates says. “We never played the game, which is probably fortunate. But to a large degree, writing this book was me imagining what would happen if we did play the game.”

Plot puzzle The structure of the book jumps between the present day and the college days in 1991. The narrator is a recluse living in the East Village in New York, and at times, the reader doesn’t actually know which one of the characters is narrating the book. Yates uses various other tricks to keep the reader guessing the whole way through. “I did a lot of those things as a way to entertain myself

while I wrote it,” he says. “I think I almost turned the book into some sort of puzzle, even a puzzle for myself, and I had to work out how to make the different pieces work together to make a satisfying structure for the reader.”

Competition cause and effect Yates says the way a person plays a game says a lot about his or her psyche. “Almost any time competition is involved, it can reveal something about the people who are playing it,” he says. “Almost any game can descend into casting a bad light on human behavior.” EMILY LAURENCE @EmLaurence

This is the reason you are unhappy at work

Bonus Spending 10 minutes honing your own strengths at work will not only improve your attitude — it might land you a promotion. “Do more of what you do best each day, and the other people around you can see the potential of what you have to offer as you go about your job,” says McQuaid. “And in my experience, that starts to open different opportunities for you as time goes by.”

&

jobs education HOW TO GET AHEAD And the good news: It’s totally fixable. Just follow these three steps. RAQUEL LANERI @RaquelLaneri raquel.laneri@metro.us

Here’s a fact that will surprise no one who has ever worked in an office: Fifty percent of people are unhappy in their job. Yet the reason why we daydream of a better life while watching cat videos as we count down the seconds till clock-out isn’t because we’re lazy or because we don’t want to do work. It’s because most employers aren’t allowing us to focus on and utilize our strengths, and we feel devalued because of it. “Workplaces are really good at inducing stress and anxiety and fear and worry,” says workplace well-being expert Michelle McQuaid. “They’re not so good in bringing out the best in people.” That’s why she’s launching the global One-Week Strengths Habit Challenge

starting Monday, August 17, to help individuals be more energized, confident and happy at work. How exactly? Just follow these three steps, and you’ll be on your way to seriously kicking butt at — and loving — your job.

Identify your strengths When asked to list their top five strengths, most people freeze. Turns out a lot of us have no idea what we’re good at — or even what our best qualities are. Fortunately, there are lots of strengths-assessment tools that can help — and that you can find free online, such as the VIA Survey (www.viacharacter.org). “It only takes 10 minutes, and it identifies your character strengths — so things like curiosity, humor, kindness, gratitude,” McQuaid says. “That’s great because while we don’t always have control over what we have to do in our jobs, we do generally have a fair amount of choice in how we approach what we

have to do. That is often the easiest way to start.”

Figure out how you already use your strengths at work

Once you nail down your top strengths, ask yourself how you’re already using them on the job. “Think about the last time you were engaged and energized and enjoying your work,” advises McQuaid. “Those are the moments you’re using your strengths — that’s why we feel good about them. “It might have been part of a big project you were working on, or it might have been a really small moment — a meeting or something where you walked out thinking, ‘Actually that wasn’t too bad,’” she explains. “But by looking at those moments you can start to identify, ‘So that’s how my curiosity is being used in this role,’ or, ‘That’s how I use kindness effectively at work.’ And as you start to spot those, it becomes possible to think about how you can do a little

bit more of that each day.”

Develop a habit The final step: consciously using that strength. Every. Single. Day. McQuaid says that she’s very curious, so years ago, when she was beginning to feel restless in her role as a global brand director at PWC, she decided to utilize her hunger for information by reading one new thing a day when she first got into the office. “It was just 10 minutes, but after a few days of doing that, I found I was looking forward to getting to work,” she says. “A good day for me is when I learn something new,” she continues, meaning that suddenly, because of her new habit, every day was a good day. “Ten minutes is perfect to develop a positive habit, because it’s excuse-proof — it’s nothing. And you don’t need anyone’s permission — you don’t need to change your job description to do it. You just need to be willing to stick with it.”

Napoli trade was inevitable MLB. The Red Sox will now get a good look at Travis Shaw and Allen Craig. It was going to happen sooner or later. On Friday, the Red Sox traded first baseman Mike Napoli to the Rangers for a player to be named later or cash. The Sox tried to deal him at the trade deadline, but there weren’t many takers. Napoli was of no use to the Red Sox as his contract is up at the end of the season and there was little to no chance the team would have re-signed him for next year. By still being in Boston, he was taking

no bigger moment than his mammoth home run in Game 3 against Justin Verlander in Detroit — the difference in the Red Sox’s 1-0 win, which gave them a 2-1 series lead in the ALCS. “We had an opportunity to re-sign him and he wanted to do that after 2013, and obviously our hope at that time was that we would continue to have team success and he would be a big part of that,” Red Sox GM Ben Cherington said. “It hasn’t worked out quite as well since then.” Arguably the most memorable moment from Napoli’s time in Boston were the images of him running up and down Boylston Street with his shirt off late in the night following the World Series parade. He quickly became a fan favorite with his big beard and he fell in love with Boston, residing in the city year-round after the World Series title.

playing time away from players that the Red Sox want to get a good look at —– namely, Travis Shaw and potentially Allen Craig. It’s been a tough contract year for Napoli, as for the season he’s batting just .207 with 13 home runs and 40 RBIs. He has picked up his play a little bit since the All-Star break to make it worth a team taking a chance on him. The Rangers were that team, as since the All-Star break Napoli is hitting .267 with three home runs and 10 RBIs in 18 games. While some may look at Napoli’s season as being a bust, his three-year career in Boston certainly wasn’t. The first baseman played a major role in the Red Sox’s 2013 World Series title, with

GRONK WORTHY OF FIRST ROUNDER When Alexander Bell invented the telephone, he had three missed calls from Rob Gronkowski. A deity among mere mortals, women want Gronk and men want to be him. That includes fantasy owners, who will need to invest a first-round pick in order to get their hands on him. Deciding whether to take that plunge requires a closer examination of the tight end landscape as a whole, as well as a strong grasp on your league’s settings.

Eddie Lacy, Jamaal Charles and a couple of other running backs project very similarly. We are splitting hairs among the deep top tier of wideouts such as Antonio Brown, Julio Jones and Dez Bryant. But at tight end, there’s Gronkowski and then there’s everyone else. So if you are in a standard weekly head-to-head format, having him is like starting each week with a 10-point lead. There’s far less value with Gronk in leagues that heavily factor raw total points.

Matchup tilter We can make an argument for both Aaron Rodgers and Andrew Luck at the top of the quarterback rankings. Adrian Peterson, Le’Veon Bell,

Where to plunge Rob Gronkowski is the best tight end out there, and it’s not even close. GETTY IMAGES

My clear-cut top two picks are Adrian Peterson and Le’Veon Bell. After that, it’s a total free-for-all. Coming

off a refreshingly healthy Summer of Gronk, it’s very reasonable to take him right after that Brown/Julio/Dez wideout tier. You won’t have to use another pick on a tight end until very late (if at all), allowing you to stock up at running back and wideout from Rounds 2-10. Even if Tom Brady ends up missing four games, Jimmy Garoppolo showed enough as a raw rookie last preseason to give Gronk upside. It certainly doesn’t hurt to know that Matt Cassel was fantasy’s No. 8 quarterback when Brady missed the entire 2008 season.

Other options If you pass on Gronkowski,

there’s a mini version in Travis Kelce. Frustratingly limited by the presence of Anthony Fasano last year, the man known as “Zeus” will be unleashed this year and brings baby Gronkonian upside in the fifth round. After Kelce and fellow midround targets Martellus Bennett, Zach Ertz and Julius Thomas, the play is to wait. Going for red-zone appeal with Dwayne Allen, Kyle Rudolph, Ladarius Green or Austin Seferian-Jenkins makes sense if punting the tight end position.
