Lawyers for New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell argued about the star QB’s role in last winter’s Deflategate scandal and subsequent four-game suspension in Manhattan federal court on Wednesday. They did not reach an agreement, and are due back in court on Aug. 19. The civil sentencing conference was presided over by Judge Richard Berman, who had pressed both sides to settle the suspension controversy before it reached his courtroom. “Some like them inflated more, some less,” Berman said of Brady’s footballs. At issue is whether the NFL’s collective bargaining agreement was violated, which Goodell lawyer Daniel Nash said was followed “completely.” Brady’s lawyers maintained that there was no direct evidence that tied Brady to the football being deflated, and maintained that the quarterback would have turned over emails and text messages had he been told he would have been punished for not doing so. “If anyone said ‘turn over the emails,’ he would have

done so,” said Brady’s attorney Jeffrey Kessler. The Goodell and Brady camps sat at separate tables, Brady behind Goodell, and both teams met privately in Judge

Berman’s chambers. Before the hearing, Brady fans and foes gathered outside the Daniel Patrick Moynihan U.S. Courthouse in lower Manhattan, waiting for him to arrive. “Tom Brady is the greatest thing in existence,” said Mike Wanders, 26, of Queens, who wore a Brady jersey. A handful of what seemed to be Brady adversaries wore plush, deflated football hats across the street from the courthouse. The hat wearers, however, were hawking the wares on behalf of Airheadzzz, a company that sells Deflategate hats. “I want to know if he really

did it,” said Enid Peralta, 37, of the Bronx, who was wearing one of the hats. “I’m interested in the integrity of the game,” said the Giants fan. Richie Campos, an ironworker on a coffee break, said Brady had no choice but to fight the four-game suspension. “If he doesn’t fight, it’s going to seem like he did know and he looks guilty, so [he must fight so] he doesn’t look like a cheater” said Campos, from Far Rockaway. Inside the courthouse, a few fans settled in for the hearing in an overflow room. Trevor Schramm, 20, had to turn his “Free Tom Brady” T-shirt inside out to get in.

MBTA. Bus driver saves woman who had seizure behind the wheel

Paul Healy / MBTA

A veteran MBTA bus driver did a lot more than make the wheels go round when he used his bus to cut off a woman who was having a seizure behind the wheel. The T driver, Paul Healy, possibly saved her life by keeping her from crashing, police said. “He definitely went above and beyond,” MBTA spokes-

man Richard Sullivan said of Healy. “He probably saved this woman’s life.” According to police, the driver saw that the woman might be suffering a medical emergency when she was “slumping over the wheel” and swerving. Healy was driving the Route 230 bus in Quincy when he noticed the 56-year-

old woman behind him. As he approached the intersection of Quincy Avenue and East Howard Street, Healy cut the woman off, then, jumped off his bus and rushed to the woman’s aid. The incident was captured on bus security cameras. Sullivan said Healy pulled her keys out of the ignition, then told his dispatcher to call for

paramedics. It was later determined that the woman likely suffered from a seizure. “I think the driver did an excellent job,” Sullivan said. “Oftentimes, the MBTA employees, in particular the bus drivers, get criticized — and this guy showed that these bus drivers do a great job day in and day out.” KEELA SWEENEY

Phony grass smokers of the Hub, the City Councilors have a bummer headed your way: On Wednesday, they voted unanimously to ban synthetic marijuana sales in Boston. The drugs — essentially cannabis-like chemicals sprayed on inert plants — were being sold legally in bodegas and head shops around Boston, marketed as “potpourri” and sold for cheap. It wasn’t difficult to find synthetic pot in Boston. At a Dorchester convenience store, Metro bought a 4-gram baggie of green appleflavored “Scooby Snax” for $10. “Take care,” the store clerk said after pulling the bag from an unseen location, stuffing it in a black plastic bag and sliding it across the counter. Then, he winked.

The list of disclaimers on the bag is long. Right off the bat, the disclaimer reads: “NOT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION … Must be 18 or older to purchase. KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN.” Use of synthetic marijuana was becoming more common, said Devin Larkin, director of programs and planning for the Boston Public Health Commission’s addictions bureau. “We’re seeing them being used at a higher rate than it used to be used in Boston. It’s a particular concern with the homeless population and with clients who are in substance abuse treatment,” said Devin

Larkin, director of programs and planning for the Boston Public Health Commission’s addictions bureau. The synthetic drugs are legal, and many do not show up in drug tests, she said — attractive features for someone on probation or in a courtmandated addiction treatment program. “Some people use it because it’s something they can do without getting caught,” she said. The drug hasn’t been shown to be addictive, but Larkin said many people she meets in drug treatment admit to using synthetic marijuana in combination with other drugs. A ban would probably not make synthetic pot vanish, she said. Attempts to reach the Boston Police Department about the addictive nature of synthetic pot and how they would go about enforcing laws regarding possession and sales were unsuccessful. California wildfire grows as crews work to protect communities

A wildfire running rampant through drought-parched vegetation in Northern California grew by several thousand acres overnight into Wednesday, as firefighters worked to stop the flames from spreading toward communities. The so-called Jerusalem Fire, which was sparked on Sunday, has grown to cover 16,500 acres (6,677 hectares) of dry and rural ranchland

north of Napa Valley wine country and is only 6 percent contained, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said. The fire has displaced about 150 people and threatens at least 50 more houses and ranches, department spokesman Steve Swindle said. He said that while the burn area is sparsely populated, firefighters were working to keep flames from spreading south and threatening the communities around Lake Berryessa. Overnight, firefighters merged part of the fire’s northeastern edge with a southwestern stretch of a behemoth 69,636-acre blaze nearby, known as the Rocky Fire, as a way of burning through combustible vegetation, Swindle said. “There is a lot of unburned fuel between those two fires,” he said. Retailerdeveloped mobile wallet to rival Apple Pay set for test

A U.S. military helicopter crashed in waters off the Japanese southern island of Okinawa during a training mission on Wednesday, injuring seven people and prompting Japan’s government to demand a probe and steps to prevent a recurrence. The U.S. Army H-60 helicopter was damaged during a “hard-deck landing” aboard the USNS Red Cloud about 20 miles east of Okinawa, U.S. Forces Japan said.

A retailer-backed rival to Apple Inc.’s Apple Pay mobile wallet will be tested with customers in a handful of stores in the next few weeks, ratcheting up competition in an increasingly cluttered market. CurrentC was developed by a consortium of retailers under the Merchant Customer Exchange, which includes Wal-Mart Stores, and Target in addition to Best Buy. The mobile wallet will be in the stores of about half a dozen retailers in Columbus, Ohio.

Officials in a Texas county fired a deputy whose police dog died after he left it in his patrol car for more than 20 hours on a hot day, the Jim Wells County Sheriff ’s Office said on Wednesday. The office has referred the case to the district attorney for the county west of Corpus Christi for possible prosecution. The dog handler, Latham Roldan, is thought to have left the dog, Jola, in the patrol car earlier this week without activating any of the systems the sheriff ’s office has in place to protect dogs from the heat, the office said.

Pa. mother shares the love and the breast milk Milk maid. Jessica Anne Colletti calls her child and the neighbor’s son she suckles “milk siblings.” A Conshohocken, Pennsylvania, woman has a novel way of spreading the gospel of breastfeeding: by not only nursing her own 16-month-old child but also an 18-month-old neighbor boy, too. Jessica Anne Colletti submitted a picture nursing both children to the Mama Bean Parenting Facebook group. In the photo, two young children are seen suckling at both of Colletti’s breasts. Mama Bean describes itself as “a space to accept and celebrate the realities of motherhood.” In other words, they share their experience, strength and hope with one another as they try to navigate motherhood. So, in honor of World Breastfeeding Week, which ended last Friday, followers of the blog submitted photos via social media of themselves breastfeeding children. Those submissions included Colletti’s. The submission quickly set off a firestorm of debate and, of course, attention.

“My son on the right is 16 months,” Colletti declared in the post to Mama Bean, “and my friend’s son is 18 months. I watch her son while she works and have been feeding them both for a year!” Colletti goes on to say that there is “much love between” the two children. She also refers to them as “milk siblings.” Mama Bean likewise refers to the ensuing controversy over the picture as a “milk storm” and tells those grossed out by the activity to check themselves and listen up. “If we filter past the shockfueled cries of ‘gross,’ there is a lot of love [in] this picture,” writes the administrator of Mama Bean, only known as Louise. It’s “a wonderful alternative to direct breastfeeding.” The idea of healthy women breastfeeding others’ children has been around for a very long time. They’re called “wet nurses,” and they were often, but not always, used by wealthy classes in society to spare rich mothers the trouble. Outside that, wet-nursing was used for health or other reasons, too. “For moms who struggle to pump [enough milk themselves]” or who experience other trouble breastfeeding, “the option of wet-nursing could be the perfect solution,” explains Mama Bean. of Estimates approved the payments for allegations that included assault, battery and false arrest. Two of the incidents took place in 2012, and the third was in 2011. “Every time you do a settlement, it’s alarming,” Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, a member of the fiscal control panel, told reporters after the meeting. Baltimore paid out about

$12 million from 2010 to 2014 to settle claims and judgments against police, City Hall figures show. The amount dropped to $1.6 million last year from $4.4 million in 2010, and 2015 figures will be compiled at year’s end. Baltimore is grappling with an upsurge of violence following the death in April of Freddie Gray, a 25-year-old black man who died from a spinal injury sustained in police custody.

Gray’s death sparked protests and hours of rioting and looting. Six officers have been charged in the case. Murders surged in months following Gray’s death to highs not seen since the 1970s. Baltimore has recorded 201 homicides so far this year compared with 211 for all of 2014, according to a running tally by the Baltimore Sun newspaper. REUTERS

Riot-torn Ferguson stays in state of emergency Control. The decision was made following a shooting incident at a protest on Sunday night. The St. Louis suburb of Ferguson, Missouri, the site of a year of occasionally violent protests over the police killing of an unarmed black teen, will remain under a state of emergency for at least another night, county officials said on Wednesday. The decision came after two nights of relatively peaceful protests, with the St. Louis County Police reporting no arrests or reports of injuries during a small demonstration by several dozen people Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. and threw rocks at police, but the conflict was defused, and no injuries to civilians or police were reported, county police said early Wednesday. Police shot and critically wounded an 18-year-old teen they said had fired at them during Sunday night’s protests, when windows of businesses along the commercial stretch were smashed.

Police on Tuesday released a video of that shooting that they said showed the teen, Tyrone Harris, drawing a pistol from his pants. Harris has been charged with four counts of assault on law enforcement, five counts of armed criminal action and one count of shooting at a vehicle. Bond for Harris, who is black, was set at $250,000. REUTERS

OMG. Future smartphone screens will repair themselves when damaged They’ve got it cracked! Scientists have developed a “selfhealing” material to fix broken smartphone screens that could be ready within the next three years. Duncan Wass and his team at the University of Bristol patented a carbon-based healing agent that exudes a liquid to fill in the gap when a crack appears on a surface. Wass’ novel invention could also be used to “self repair” damaged aeroplane wings in midflight. Metro spoke to Wass about his product. A “self-healing” carbon material sounds very sci-fi. Where did you get the idea for it? The human body. For example, if we cut our finger, blood forms a scab and our wound heals; our body repairs this damage by itself. We thought it should be possible to have man-made materials that do the same thing. We have been focusing on what scientists call “carbon fiber reinforced composite” materials.

Visit us online at Metro.us/omg for more interviews. How does it actually work? We incorporate tiny capsules that contain a liquid healing agent into the material we want to self-heal. We also add a chemical called a catalyst, which triggers the hardening of the liquid healing agent. If the material gets damaged with a crack, it ruptures the tiny capsules; the liquid healing agent leaks out and comes into contact with the catalyst. This causes the healing agent to harden. What’s this material made of? Carbon fibers and a resin that

glues the fibers together. Our healing agent, after it has been hardened, is exactly the same as glue material. The microcapsules themselves have a hard outer shell and a liquid interior. But they are so small that to the human eye they just look like white powder. Would you describe this material as a revolution? If our technology gets adopted then it could be. At present, materials are overengineered to withstand any likely damage — this uses more material than we actually need, adding to cost and weight. Imagine if humans had evolved to withstand any damage — we would need skin as thick as a rhinoceros. If a material can heal itself it can be lighter and thinner, so our cars and planes can go faster and use less fuel. And that could revolutionize how we use materials. DMITRY BELYAEV, METRO WORLD NEWS

13

Question

What are its exclusive applications? It could self-heal a smart-

phone screen, although we are also interested in carbon fiber materials that are used in airplanes. Cracked screens are a big problem, but there’s still more to do in that area.

Cracked smartphone screen / FLICKR / CREATIVE COMMONS

As you might imagine, getting a material which still has good transparency when repaired is very challenging. DMITRY BELYAEV, METRO WORLD NEWS

Aldis Hodge, Neil Brown Jr., Corey Hawkins, Jason Mitchell and O’Shea Jackson Jr. star in “Straight Outta Compton.” UNIVERSAL PICTURES

THE FUN STARTS HERE F. Gary Gray brings remarkably current N.W.A.’s story to the and relevant? didn’t set out to prove screen — and shines a We a point in that way. I just wanted to stay true to the light on life today. N.W.A. story. Some of it is NED EHRBAR @Nedrick

ned.ehrbar@metro.us

When it came to finding a director for “Straight Outta Compton,” the biopic about pioneering hip-hop group N.W.A. starting in the late ’80s, it was a no-brainer to go with F. Gary Gray, who got his start directing Ice Cube’s video for “It Was a Good Day” and made his feature debut with “Friday.” And with the film’s images of a militarized police force, frayed tensions between cops and citizens and protests erupting over police brutality going unpunished — in this case after the Rodney King trial — Gray’s look back at life almost 30 years ago seems uncomfortably contemporary.

How does it feel to tell a story that takes place decades ago but is so

just a coincidence, but some of it is what makes this movie special and takes it far beyond just being a music biopic. These guys had a huge impact on popular culture. It’s American history. I don’t think they knew that what they were creating at the time would have that type of impact.

With so many recent instances of police brutality, how do you stay optimistic? It’s one thing when it’s in the shadows or happens every once in a while and then we move on to another story about Kim Kardashian, but it’s happening so often that I think any human being who continues

GETTY IMAGES

to witness this can’t help but push for change. Now, maybe I’m just optimistic to a fault and maybe this country will continue to go down the road of criminally destroying people, but I just don’t believe that is going to happen. What makes me less optimistic is how quickly people do move on from these stories. But the video lasts forever. If you’re an officer, and you know that you’re going to be digitally ostracized, and your kids are going to see what you did, time after time on CNN, choking someone out or using excessive force — I think that type of pressure could shift the thinking of any human being, unless you’re evil, and I don’t believe in inherent evil.

all the choices serve the themes that we’ve set out to achieve. It was hard to sift through what we had and pick and choose. There was so much drama, so much controversy. Besides casting the movie, that was the hardest thing for me.

You can’t fit everything into one movie. How did you choose what to leave out?

We would joke about that, like, “Hey, Gary Gray would probably be in the other room in this scene.” But no, this movie’s about them. I do have a quick cameo as an awful radio host that was thrown in at the last second, but that was about it.

My job is just to serve the story and make sure

Were there any particular moments you were sad to see go? There were some of the relationships with the women in their lives that I would’ve loved to see a little more of. But you never know when that might be coming. Maybe there’s a director’s cut.

Was there any thought of inserting yourself from back then in the story?

The ‘Bye, Felicia’ origin, revealed — sorta There’s a moment in “Straight Outta Compton” when an angry husband storms N.W.A’s hotel suite looking for his wife, Felicia, and threatening violence. When the group ejects her from the party, Ice Cube (O’Shea Jackson Jr., Cube’s real-life son) utters the now famous “Bye, Felicia.” So are we witnessing the saying’s roots? “It’s not the true origin. Shea came up with it at the end of the day, at four o’clock in the morning. It was a coincidence that her name was Felicia in the script, and it was just an off-the-cuff improv moment,” director F. Gary Gray explains. “The creation of ‘Bye, Felicia’ actually happened in rehearsals for my movie ‘Friday.’ We put it in ‘Friday,’ and somehow it just took on a life of its own. I have no idea how or why it’s even relevant right now. For the life of me, I wish I was smart enough to tell you how and why, but I’m rolling with it.”

‘Star Wars’ is doing fan service just right This week we got a new trailer for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” from the “Star Wars” Korea YouTube channel, with a couple seconds of new footage. I, like many of you, watched it over and over again, freezing the frame and speculating about what it all means. I’ve had discussions about this with less, um, fanatical “Star Wars” fans than myself, and argued about why it all means so much to me. Why should an extra two seconds of footage make me all teary? Why does it matter? I’ve said this publicly numerous times, but I love the way the marketing campaign is being run here. We’ve seen all kinds of stuff, and yet we really know very little. I hate films that give away everything in the trailer, yet I’m poring over this one to squeeze out every little detail. I think that’s the point. Fans like me want to watch these things again and again for the sole purpose of spending hours talking with friends and fellow fans about what it all means. We want the anticipation and the possibility that we ferreted out a detail or an idea before our friends did. We want these final few months to be about enjoying the

The studio has done a terrible job explaining to the kids what the source is, namely one of the ’60s better Bond knockoffs, which banded together U.S. and Soviet powers. For better and for worse, “U.N.C.L.E.” plays like a supersized episode — inconsequential, an excuse for smirky fun and the occasional (though too occasional) old-school gadget, bound to be repeated, with mild variations, over untold seasons. Cavill and Hammer aren’t Tracy and Hepburn, or Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, but they, and Ritchie’s direction, are personable enough to wish the next installment was next week. MP

Even a cheesy biopic about N.W.A would be a political act. It means the band had gone from being the scourge of the right wing to becoming official Great Men, their story ready to become simple myth. For the record, “Straight Outta Compton” is only part cheese, with sometimes onthe-nose expository dialogue and producers Ice Cube and Dr. Dre softening some of the punches. But they don’t soften all

of them. Every scene has life and, especially in the galvanizing first half, real, furious anger. It underlines what should have been clear from their songs — because the lyrics, you know, talked about it — but was often ignored: that they weren’t thugs but artists trying to beam their message of desperation from an ignored chunk of the world to the masses. A scene where they’re shaken down by officers, one of them black, has an immediacy and a fury that saves it from cliche. It’s exactly the kind of scene that inspires one to blast “F— Tha

Police”; here, our heroes go and create it. The first half is better than the inescapably messy second, which extends the story postbreakup and into the death of Eazy-E (an uncanny Jason Mitchell). But the second half also shows true commitment, sticking with characters through the rough times, watching as they mellow and change. It’s a mix of bad biopic tropes and good ones, offering the very un-biopic message that even the fieriest firebrand chills out.

It’s been 16 years since Dr. Dre released a studio album, but the rapper is back with “Compton,” the film’s soundtrack, out now. Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg and Ice Cube are all featured on the album, and while it’s being praised overall, the song “Medicine Man,” featuring Eminem, is getting slammed for its controversial lyrics referencing rape. “I even make the b—es I rape c—m,” he raps on the track. Elsewhere on the album, Dr. Dre takes on various social and political issues, including racism. It’s as if he’s been sitting back studying culture, waiting for his moment to comment.

‘Listen to Me Marlon’ reintroduces Brando

‘Best of Enemies’

Director: Robert Gordon, Morgan Neville Genre: Documentary Rating: NR

••••• You can head to YouTube to watch Gore Vidal and William F. Buckley’s infamous smackdowns during the 1968 Democratic National Convention, including the one where the pithy put-downs became so intense that the usually unflappable Buckley lost it and called Vidal a “queer” on national television. “Best of Enemies” offers not only that moment (and its context), but also a sad portrait of two quietly tragic men. Hired by ABC to debate in what was a major television event, Buckley and Vidal stood, with their proud smirks, on opposite sides of the sociopolitical continuum. Ideally the two would have had a love-hate relationship, the one forever driven by the other to up his game. Instead they went too far and became more like exes who couldn’t even hear each other’s name without fuming. “Enemies” doesn’t dare pick sides (at least not explicitly). And it summons up an era when the political divide was even more chasmic — when tussling was somehow

nastier but where the people waging them on television were funnier and far better spoken. Given our age of artless shouting and rabid anti-intellectualism, watching Vidal and Buckley calmly spar, with their patrician accents and cutting wits, is like peering into an alien world. In the clips, Buckley is spouting straight-up racism, but he’s doing it so articulately and euphoniously that even a kale addict leftie with a bumper obscured by stickers would find him lovable. But it’s the postscript that takes it to another level. Buckley’s

hipish conservativism lives on in the always energized Republican party, while society’s more progressive attitudes toward sex and gender — while not quite the Bacchanalian utopia that Vidal envisioned — would, to a rightie from 1968, seem downright Caligulian. But the architects of the future tend to get chucked aside, and Buckley and Vidal were soon treated as icons of a bygone era. “Enemies” reclaims them, showing both of them as tragic figures who went out in a highly quotable blaze of glory. ••••• Marlon Brando spends time with his daughter Cheyenne at some point in the 1970s, as seen in the doc “Listen to Me Marlon.” MIKE GILLMAN, SHOWTIME MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

matt.prigge@metro.us

Like “Amy,” “Listen to Me Marlon” is short on people sitting in a chair, rattling off anecdotes and hyperbole. In fact, the only person saying anything is Brando himself. Turns out the actor spent chunks of his latter years committing his life story and his

thoughts to tape, which play over relevant — or sometimes vaguely poetic — clips from his movies, archival footage and, most eerie of all, ghostly video of his digitized head from the 1980s. It also turns out that he was considerably more together-seeming than his often eccentric public image at the time implied. “Listen to Me Marlon” proves perhaps most

useful as a sympathetic look at two things that audiences find controversial: actors who become political, and actors who get tired of acting. Even the Sacheen Littlefeather bit — in which he sent a Native American activist to claim his “Godfather” Oscar — is treated as a heroic moment, not a black mark on Academy Awards history. This isn’t a new official look at him. Instead it’s another key piece to a vast puzzle.

Enjoy European flair at Committee The new spot in the Seaport District isn’t messing around with its cocktail options.

Thursty

LUKE O’NEIL @LUKEONEIL47

Considering how it’s the latest venture from George Aboujaoude, owner of Bijou Nightclub and Cafeteria Boston, you’d naturally expect Committee to adhere to a certain level of, let’s say, Boston nightlife class. And the handsome, imposing room and Boston-stylish crowd certainly feels a piece of the Newbury-Street-by-the-water scene that the thriving Seaport

has become. What you might not expect is for the cocktails to be so well-designed and intricate. Typically, around here, you trade quality drinks for real estate atmosphere. Credit beverage director Peter Szigeti

and general manager Demetri Tsolakis then for pulling off a rare combination of the two.

A taste of the continent Szigeti, a native of Hungary,

brings a distinctly European aesthetic to his creations, with creative flair, decorative-butfunctional garnishes and glassware and, most interesting, a variety of lesser-used spirits and modifiers that compliment them well. The Cuban Affair, for example, is made with Dos Maderas, a rum aged for five years in American oak in the Caribbean before spending another five years in two different sherry casks in Spain. It’s mixed with lime, vanilla syrup and balsamic vinegar, and the result is a sharp, dry sort of daiquiri with distinct vanilla notes. “I love to play with vinegar,” Szigeti says.

“You talk about shrubs, you’re using apple cider vinegar, but why stop there?” The flavors here are meant to be reminiscent of a type of Hungarian cheesecake, he says, although one very much unlike what we think of here in the States.

Breakfast in a cocktail For the Smoke Show, he uses a mezcal smoothed out with a strawberry infusion, Aperol, sweet vermouth and Amaro #4. The latter is a unique series of amaro made by Brovo spirits, in which various notable bartenders worked with the distiller to design their own line of limited-run bottles. Here the #4 brings in bright citrus, floral notes and a lightly spiced finish. “It’s different than European Amaris, which are very dark and herbal. This is a young amaro that works perfectly in drinks,” he says. The cocktail is then garnished with candied bacon. “Mezcal is smoky, bacon

is smoky, so when I was thinking about a cool garnish, the bacon came to me. This is a bittersweet drink, so the candied bacon has the sweetness and ties into smoke,” he says. It’s a very approachable mezcal cocktail, with the strawberry decidedly rounding off its occasionally rough edges. Elsewhere, the Pins & Needles, made with cachaca, Lillet Rose, pineapple syrup, citrus and Angostura bitters, is a tall, refreshing blast with a light piney quality.

Dinner not included The cocktails on the menu don’t necessarily always play well with the food — much of which is mezze-style plates like souvlaki, Greek-style meatballs, braised chickpea and eggplant, hummus, tzatziki and baba ganoush — but the rapid pace and small size (and high price) of the dishes makes that an afterthought anyway.

Who could say no to that face? NICOLAUS CZARNECKI

Why not adopt a pet this weekend? With an adoption drive Saturday, the timing couldn’t be better. CAROLINE MACNEILLE @MetroBos letters@metro.us

Winter may be months away, but there’s no denying fall is coming. So why not welcome the season skipping through foliage with a new buddy? Head down to your local shelter on Aug. 15 to find your newest companion. The date marks Clear the Shelters Day, an event in which shelters across America open their doors — and reduce their fees — to encourage people to take home an animal in need. The annual event, sponsored by NBC Universal stations such as NECN, is garnering support from shelters all over Massachusetts. “It began with a shelter in Texas and spread to New England,” says Rob Halpin of the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The choice to join the movement was easy, Halpin says. “We want people to adopt versus buy. Any animal that people would buy from a breeder or in a pet store could be found in your local shelter.” Clear the Shelters Day is taking place at most shelters across the state. Some shel-

ters reduce adoption fees and some waive them altogether. The Animal Rescue League of Boston is offering $50 off adoption fees of dogs and cats over a year old, plus an ARL Super Pet Pack, which includes a pet blanket, an ARL shoulder bag, a drink cozy and treats for your new dog or cat. According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, 7.6 million adoptable pets enter shelters every year. This event aims to match as many of those animals with homes as possible. “There’s a misconception that a shelter animal is somehow less whole, or perhaps broken because they’re not the kind of specialty breed a family or individual might like, and that’s not true,” says Halpin. He suggests people explore their local shelter while the

weather is warm. “The summer is a great time to adopt,” he says. “Families are spending more time together because children are out of school, so it’s a wonderful time to get to know a pet. Then the animal has time to assimilate to the rhythms of the home when everyone is there at the same time.” Plus, according to Halpin, New Englanders are specifically positioned to enjoy a pet. “The beaches and the mountains of New England, those experiences are enhanced when we do them with a fourlegged friend.” So don’t let another season go by taking walks alone. Find a companion who leaves no rock unturned and no smell unsniffed. VisitNECN.com to find your nearest shelter — and your new best friend.

With reduced or waived fees, you can take home two cat friends. NICOLAUS CZARNECKI

Things to watch for as Pats face the Packers

NFL. Will Jimmy Garoppolo show some skills as he is prominently featured in Thursday night’s preseason opener?

It’s the Patriots. It’s the Packers. It’s … the preseason. But even though we’d rather watch these two teams go at it again in the regular season (the Packers beat the Pats at Lambeau Field last year, 26-21), the simple fact that football is once again back in our lives is reason enough to celebrate. For a few hours, we can stop talking about deflated footballs and focus on the actual sport we’ll seemingly love no matter what. Of course, it’s a lot easier to love when you’re cheering for a team that’s consistently one of the best in the NFL, as the Patriots have been for the past 15 years. But how much longer can that be the case? As it stands, 38-year-old Tom Brady could miss four games due to suspension this season. (It’s also worth noting that sources have said he will not play Thursday at all.) And while that’s a huge problem in and of itself, the team lost some very important players on defense, too. Darrelle Revis is back with the Jets and Vince Wilfork moved on to Houston (catch him on HBO’s “Hard Knocks”). There is no shortage of questions surrounding this Patriots team as the preseason begins, but as the old saying goes, “In Belichick We Trust.” Let’s just all remember one thing: It’s just the freakin’ preseason. With that, here are three things to watch for Thursday night when the Pats put on the pads and see their first full-contact of the season. JIMMY TOSCANO @metronewyork sports@metro.us

1

Jimmy G

Everybody knows what Tom Brady can do. Nobody wants to have to find out what Ryan Lindley can do. These four preseason games are about Jimmy Garoppolo. The second-year QB had a rough go of things in Tuesday’s training camp practice according to

The Rookies While nobody is going to put much stock into how a proven veteran looks in the preseason, the same can’t be said for the rookies. This is everybody’s first chance to see these guys at the pro level and at full speed. The Patriots have three rookie

D-linemen in Malcom Brown, Geneo Grissom and Trey Flowers that they have high hopes for. And don’t forget last year’s first-round pick Dominique Easley. It’s an exciting time for the Patriots’ young defensive line that is beginning to undertake a transformation.

Cornerbacks

Assuming the Pats’ young D-line can’t get to the quarterback or clog the middle every down, the cornerbacks are going to have to make plays. So which one is going to rise about the rest? The hope is Malcolm Butler is the real deal. After that? It’s anybody’s guess. Tarell Brown, Robert McClain, Bradley Fletcher: Which one of these new additions wants the opposite side most?

reporters on the scene, and that’s not what anybody wants to hear with the possibility that he could be starting in Week 1 for New England. Unfortunately for Garoppolo, it doesn’t look like Julian Edelman or Brandon LaFell will suit up for this week’s game. That goes for lead back LeGarrette Blount, too.

Bills claim Jets’ sucker puncher

After the Jets released linebacker Ikemefuna Enemkpali for his “sucker punch” to Geno Smith’s face (a strike that broke the quarterback’s jaw), Rex Ryan decided to give the player a second chance, signing him Wednesday.

Lead paint poisoning affects over one million children today. Learning disabilities, hearing loss, speech delays, violent behavior and, in rare cases, seizures and even death: these are just some of the effects lead paint poisoning has on young children. If your home was built before 1978, lead paint on your walls, doors, windows and sills may be dangerous. And it’s not just large paint chips that can cause damage. In fact, three granules of lead dust are enough to
