Kush Groove takes aim at views on pot culture Duuuude. Budding apparel and lifestyle company opens first storefront on Tremont Street in Mission Hill. Mike Pires: entrepreneur, designer, tastemaker, concert producer, stoner. After more than a decade of selling cannabis culture-themed T-shirts and other goods online, Pires and three of his closest friends this week were prepping to open a storefront in Mission Hill for Kush Groove, an apparel and goods company Pires said aims to reshape people’s ideas about tokeup culture. “Our lifestyle is pretty much the urban stoner: young, educated folks who have a fashion savvy,” Pires, the company’s 33-year-old CEO, told Metro on Tuesday while unpacking boxes of freshly printed shirts in the shop he helped renovate by hand. “We want to use the clothing as an avenue to kind of change people’s perceptions, especially older folks who think people who smoke weed are lazy, delinquents, criminals. That’s not the case.” First dreamed up when Pires designed a shirt labeled “West Side” that was a hit among friends in Cambridge, Kush Groove caught on in a big way over the last few years. “Our lifestyle is pretty much the urban stoner: young, educated folks who have a fashion savvy.” Pires

Flame, A$AP Rocky — have worn their shirts. Sales online, at local concerts (many of which they organized), Boston’s propot Freedom Rally, and at pop-ups in select cities on both coasts have climbed

near $75,000, Pires said. The designs, co-produced by Pires and local graffiti artists, are funky and playful, like one that spells out “munchies” in an array of half-eaten donuts and candy bars, or one that reads “Penznoil,” a send-up of the motor oil company and a nod to oily concentrated pot products, smoked with a special heat-up pen. They’re also more “classy and tasteful” than most shirts in the pot enthusiast market. With one small exception, none of the company’s 60 T-shirt designs over the years have pot leaves

on them. But the company does more than just print graphic T-shirts. Concerts Kush Groove has organized at Boston-area venues for local artists have attracted as many as 200 people in a night. The young entrepreneurs are also cooking up an event they want to call the Stoner Awards, recognizing local music, activists, dispensaries and the like. We are “highlighting the cultural elements of the cultural ambassadors of the city who are really tied in with the cannabis movement,” Pires said. Through it all, the four Cantabrigians have

stuck together to run the company, Pires said. “This is really an iteration of a family business,” said COO Marcus Johnson-Smith, 29, who like Pires is a Northeastern grad. “That’s kind of how we approached it.” A kickoff party for the new store on Tremont — which will offer shirts, hats, shoes, glass pipes, custom pot accessories such as grinders and rolling papers and, soon, handmade jewelry — was planned for this weekend. Pills. Drug charges for former N. Andover H.S. teacher A former teacher and swim team coach at North Andover High School was charged with giving drugs to a former student. According to the Essex County District Attorney’s Office, Elizabeth Backler, 28, was charged with two counts of distribu-

tion of Class B substance oxycodone and one count of distribution of Class C diazepam. The DA’s office said these charges stem from her giving out pills, not selling them. The drugs were prescribed to the defendant, but that’s still

distribution. She was arrested on Monday. She had worked in the North Andover Public Schools in different capacities from May 2011 to February 2015. She was a daily substitute teacher from May 2011 to April 2012, then

worked as a long-term substitute from April 2012 to June 2013. She worked as a science teacher in the 2013-2014 year. She also worked as the school’s swim team coach. At the time of her arrest, Backler was not an

employee of the schools. A parent told the administrators, who then contacted the School Resource Officer for the North Andover Police. They say that this is an isolated event and it involved one student. NATE HOMAN

State officials on Tuesday unveiled a proposal to require drivers for ride-sharing services such as Uber and Lyft to carry at least $1 million in insurance and face what they called the strongest backgroundcheck requirements in the United States. They presented their proposal at a raucous statehouse hearing packed by drivers for the services, who generally oppose the measure, and traditional taxi drivers, who support it and claim the new services are undercutting their business. A bill proposed by Gov. Charlie Baker, a Republican, would give the state’s Department of Public Utilities oversight over the new services, said Angela O’Connor, chairman of that department. Administrators would implement a twotier background check, more stringent than taxi drivers currently face,

that would review driving and criminal records as well as sex offender databases. “We should embrace new technology as we seek to solve our transportation needs, O’Connor said. “The customer should have more choices to get from here to there. Another bill, which has the backing of the taxi industry, would require Uber and Lyft drivers to submit fingerprints for background checks, a point of controversy for Uber officials who argue that that would show people who’ve been arrested but not convicted of crimes. It also would prohibit ride-service drivers from operating at Boston’s Logan International Airport, require all cars used by drivers to be less than 5 years old, and restrict Uber and Lyft from using “surge pricing, which increases fare prices during busy times. A man suspected of gunning down a Mississippi college professor and of killing a woman he lived with shot himself as he was cornered by police after a manhunt, authorities said on Tuesday. Shannon Lamb, a social science and geography instructor at Delta State University, killed himself after fleeing Greenville police during a traffic stop, said Cleveland Police Chief Charles “Buster” Bingham. Lamb, 45, was being sought for the Monday killing of Ethan Schmidt, an assistant professor of American history at Delta State, and the earlier shooting of Amy Prentiss

in Gautier, a town 300 miles away, authorities have said. Lamb and Prentiss, 41, shared a home. Bingham said it did not appear that the shooting victims knew each other, and police were still investigating the motives for both shootings. “We don’t know why this man did what he did,” he said. Law enforcement said when police stopped Lamb’s car, he jumped from the vehicle and ran. Officers then heard a gunshot. While on the run, Lamb had made statements to police that he would not go to jail, the Sun Herald newspaper reported.

Instacart. Target challenges Amazon, enters grocery delivery Target Corp. said on Tuesday it has partnered with Instacart Inc. to deliver groceries for as little as $3.99 per order, as it overhauls its food business and competes with Amazon. com Inc.’s grocery delivery service. The discount retailer will launch a pilot to test the offering in its hometown of Minneapolis and customers in some areas will be able to order online for food, pet products and baby items from two Target stores and have them delivered to their homes. Target has been revamping its grocery

department after customer complaints about freshness and product quality, and the business has been a key priority for Chief Executive Brian Cornell. The company’s grocery division accounted for more than 20 percent of revenue last year, with approximately $18 billion in sales. The push expands online order options for Target customers, who can get free delivery within five days on a $25 minimum order. At $3.99 per order, Target customers would have to place 75 orders to match the cost of Amazon’s an-

Elizabeth Olsen and Tom Hiddleston have been weathering speculation about just how close they are all summer, and the film in which they play husband and wife, “I Saw the Light,” just debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival, so they’ve been posing for a lot of photos. The Decemberists are in it for the long haul Interview. A new EP is just a sign of how much material the group can still draw from these days. To call the Decemberists prolific is an understatement. The group has been steadily putting out their own particular brand of indie pop for over a decade now. And now, following the release of this year’s “What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World, they’ll also be releasing an EP of leftover songs from the process called “Florasongs, out Oct. 9. “We went in to record this record and didn’t have a clear picture of what it would be. So much of our lore and our album-making history became albums that were very focused on themes, just to sort of focus us, explains Chris Funk, who

plays a range of stringed instruments for the group, and was a founding member alongside lead singer Colin Meloy. “I often call it a sort of greatest hits sound of the Decemberists. I can point to every record in our history and say that comes from here, that comes from there — which is refreshing, because it just means we have arrived at a sound. Of course, not having a uniting principle meant that a bigger quantity of songs might be considered for the album. “We discussed just putting it all out and giving people what they wanted as a double album, says Funk. “But we still think of how we market ourselves as albums, even though it’s a singlesdriven world these days, at times. With that in mind, he says, “We wanted to rein it into one record, and that being ‘What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World,’ we had

These are those [songs]. The result is the fivesong “Florasongs. But don’t go thinking that just because these songs didn’t make the first cut, there’s anything wrong with them. “Often, you get to hear outtakes, and people are like, these are a kind of a peek behind the curtain of the ones that aren’t as good as the album, says Funk with a laugh. “I think we’re just as proud of these songs. Given the huge wave of indie bands that hit

it big in the early 2000s, the Decemberists stand out for their longevity. While many of those bands flared out after a few albums, the group has managed to make it last for some pretty simple reasons. “I think we’re good communicators and we’re good friends and we’re good working partners, and it makes for a good recipe to have longevity, explains Funk. Glam rock superwomen The new ‘It’ shoe for spring

PROVIDED

Watch out, Kanye West — there might be a new shoe line dethroning Yeezy Season 2 as the It footwear of Fashion Week. New York-based label Mansur Gavriel, known for its cult-hit and forever-soldout minimalist bucket bags, held its first-ever Fashion Week presentation — a pretty, Wes Andersonesque pink department store setup — on Monday eve-

ning to debut a new shoe collection. The line consists of four styles, from suede mules to leather slides, and each comes in a variety of eyecatching colors, including cerulean blue, canary yellow, burnt sienna and cherry red, and five heel heights. Talk about customization. For bag hounds — we predict a waitlist for the new chic Circle bag. TC

Rodarte’s cheap chic

The hustle is real — said every multitasker, city dweller and working mom out there. David Neville and Marcus Wainwright’s spring collection seemed determined to solve the modernday dilemma of getting it all done while, you know, still looking cool. How? Giant pockets, tweed pullovers, easy-yetelegant ribbed dresses, sexy, party-ready camisole slips — paired with high tops! — and another comfortableyet-chic footwear option: tie-up platform sandals (think: if Aquazzura and Birkenstocks had a baby). The shiny luxe bombers and cape-like parkas completed the look for the modern-day superwoman.

If you liked Rodarte’s glam-pirate-hooker garb last season, well, you’re gonna love what the Mulleavy sisters have cooked up for spring. This time, the look is a bit more David Bowie mixed with some oldfashioned Victoriana: shimmery leisure suits, paisley velvet halters and glitter boots mixed with cobbled-together black lace dresses with ruffled high-necked collars and supershort hemlines. Adding to the trashy fun: the cheesy ’70s soundtrack and spectacular light show that opened the presentation. It costs a lot to look this cheap — and irresistible. RL

letters@metro.us

If there’s something strange in your neighborhood, who ya gonna call? When a neighborhood in development is going the wrong way — that is to say, not developing — many call on Kyle Corkum, a managing partner at LStar Management. In March, Corkum heard from Starwood, the master developers of

SouthField,a long-beleaguered development on the old South Weymouth naval base, offering him the stalled project. He said no way. “I knew the whole thing was so messed up. I turned the offer down flat,” says Corkum. It wasn’t the massive 1,400acre property itself that lacked luster; it was the politically hampered setup behind it. But Starwood called again, this time with some obstacles removed. Corkum saw hope for moving forward and his company bought the troubled housing development.

“Ghostbusters” comes to town Not long after LStar took over this spring, Corkum received another call: “It was someone asking me if they could work on the new ‘Ghostbusters’ movie

at the site,” he says. The plans for SouthField had always included a movie production business with sound stages and production suites. “I wasn’t thinking of going ahead with the movie side, but the ‘Ghostbusters’ team convinced me that it might be viable. It’s incredible — they’ve built this huge lot to look like Times Square, right on an old runway. ”

to the South Shore. “I’m not selling dreams here,” he insists. “This is solid New England thinking and action: Do what you say you’re going to do and get to work.”

What is the relationship cervical cancer?

between

HPV

and

HPV is the leading risk factor for cervical cancer, as almost all cervical cancers are caused by HPV infection. Approximately 70 percent of cervical cancers are caused by HPV strains 16 and 18, which can also cause some vaginal, vulvar and penile cancers.

What You Should Know About Cervical Cancer and HPV Although cervical cancer is relatively rare in the United States, approximately 11,000-12,000 women in the U.S. are diagnosed each year. The Susan F. Smith Center for Women’s Cancers at Dana- Farber Cancer Institute wants you to know that regular screenings using the Pap smear, the number of American women who die from cervical cancer has decreased steadily over the last 40 years. Cervical cancer is most commonly caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), which can be transmitted during sexual activity. What is HPV? The human papillomavirus (HPV) is a virus that can cause abnormal tissue growth and other changes to cells. The virus can be spread through skin-to-skin contact during sexual activity and can be carried by both men and women. There are multiple strains of the virus that can cause genital warts and several forms of cancer, including cervical cancer and oropharyngeal cancer.

What are the symptoms of cervical cancer? The signs and symptoms for cervical cancer can include vaginal bleeding, unusual vaginal discharge, pelvic pain or back pain, and bleeding after sexual intercourse. Symptoms of cervical cancer may not appear until the disease is advanced, so it is important undergo regular screenings.

Are men affected by HPV? Both men and women can carry and transmit HPV. In addition to cervical cancer, HPV infections can increase risk for oropharyngeal and penile cancer. The CDC recommends HPV vaccinations for boys ages 11-12, and up until age 21. The vaccine Gardasil is approved for both boys and girls. For more information on HPV and cancer visit www.dana-farber.org. Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, a principal teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School, is world renowned for its leadership in adult and pediatric cancer treatment and research. Designated as a comprehensive cancer center by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), it is one of the largest recipients among independent hospitals of NCI and National Institutes of Health grant funding.

If I have been exposed to HPV, what are my odds of getting cervical cancer? Is there anything I can do about it?

For more information, go to www.dana-farber.org. Follow Dana-Farber on Facebook: www.facebook.com/danafarbercancerinstitute and on Twitter: @danafarber.

Most people who are infected with HPV do not develop cancer. In fact, many HPV infections go away within 1-2 years.

Cervical Cancer & HPV Related Cancers Summit

If a woman is infected, her doctor may require more frequent screenings and Pap smears to monitor any abnormalities found in the cervix. There is currently no treatment for HPV infections, but there are surgical treatments for precancerous lesions (cervical dysplasia) if they develop. Treating these early can help prevent further development of cancer. The longer someone is infected with the virus, the higher the chance she has for developing cancer, so it is important to undergo regular screenings.

Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in collaboration with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and the Massachusetts Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics is hosting a program for medical providers and public health professionals to address the President’s Cancer Panel Recommendations from the National Vaccine Advisory Committee HPV Working Group Friday, November 6, 2015, 8 AM - 2:30 PM Dana-Farber Cancer Institute Jimmy Fund Auditorium 450 Brookline Ave., Boston, MA 02215 To learn more, visit www.dana-farber.org/HPVSummit

Rex - Gronk matchup should be fascinating NFL. Rex Ryan has one of the few defenses in the NFL that could wipe out Rob Gronkowski. The Steelers said they were going to “jam” Rob Gronkowski in the NFL season opener. But the only jamming going in Foxboro last week was the repetitive sound of Bon Jovi’s “This is our house” on the PA system after Gronk found the end zone three different times. It’s safe to say that Bills head coach Rex Ryan won’t make the same mistake that Mike Tomlin made and will do just about anything to keep the ball out of No. 87’s hands this coming Sunday in Orchard Park (1 p.m., CBS). Before Ryan was neutered by the Jets front office and lost his bravado, his Jets did a great job on a young Gronkowski. In 2010, Ryan’s Jets played the Patriots three times. Gronkowski, then a rookie, caught just six balls total in those games and did not find the end zone. Even in that infant stage, Gronkowski had been finding the end zone. In the Pats’ four regular season games before a 28-21 home playoff loss to Ry-

“He’s a big, huge dude now. He’s got great body control. He’s just a huge target. And he can run a lot better than I think people know.” Bills head coach Rex Ryan on Rob Gronkowski

an’s Jets, Gronk registered four touchdown grabs. In that game, Gronk was targeted six times.

X-receiver Deion Branch was targeted a team-high 10 times. Ryan doesn’t seem to

mind when Tom Brady looks toward outside receivers. Aaron Dobson, in his first pro game, was targeted 10 times in a narrow 13-10 Patriots win over the Jets in 2013. He had a touchdown grab but Ryan’s defense did a solid job overall of slowing down the New England offense in that game. Dobson, again the Pa-

triots’ primary outside threat with Brandon LaFell out due to injury, will surely see more targets in Week 2 against Ryan’s Bills. Dobson was targeted just once by Brady in the Pats’ win over the Steelers last week. MATT BURKE @Burke_Metro sports@metro.us

NFL

Why Pats fans are obsessed with ‘pink stripes’ ”Pink Stripes” has become New England Patriots fans’ rallying cry early in the 2015 season. The mysterious Ernie Adams, who is the Patriots’ “Director of Football Research” and who has been by the side of Pats head coach Bill Belichick for more than 30 years, is the mastermind behind the term. The night before the Patriots opened the

3

2015 season against the Pittsburgh Steelers, the documentary “Do Your Job: Bill Belichick and the 2014 Patriots” debuted on NFL Network. When Adams was featured

ERNIE ADAMS GETTY IMAGES

in the documentary, the ominous phrase “Pink Stripes” was on display on the white board in Adams’ office. It was the first time Adams has ever been featured extensively on camera. Adams’

legend has grown over the years among die-hard Patriots fans because of stories, such as one that ran in the Boston Globe in February. In it, “Hall of Fame coach Bill Parcells, when asked about Adams this week, was hardpressed to recall anything about Adams even though Adams worked with the Tuna for six seasons. ‘I can’t really tell you anything about him,’ said Parcells. ‘I just don’t know the guy.’” Informed that Adams was the New York Giants’ director of pro person-

nel in 1983-84 — when Parcells was head coach of the team — Parcells said, ‘He was? I don’t remember that. I don’t remember him being on my staff. ‘If he was on my coaching staff, I don’t remember what he was doing. I don’t have Alzheimer’s. I have a pretty good memory, and I didn’t have any interaction with him.’” A quick YouTube search of “Pink Stripes” reveals only an odd video with long-haired babies playing instruments to the White Stripes song “Ball and Biscuit.” MATT BURKE

Delisa Lynch, the mother of Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch, went on a Facebook rant this week, slamming Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell. “Too the smart azz media who wrote that’s why marshawn didn’t get the ball in the superbowl, how many times did russell get sacked [Sunday]. Dont worry i will wait on the answer plus it was totally different at the superbowl the line was better than yesterday no blocking and to the offense caller who should have been fired yes i said it Fired !!! Tom Brady wasn’t rusty. He celebrated the lifting of his suspension with four touchdowns against the Steelers, in a game that never seemed in doubt for New England. Questions about their defense will remain, after they allowed 464 yards.

Carson Palmer displayed why he’s the key to the Cardinals success every season. Displaying no ill effects from his torn ACL, Palmer threw for 307 yards and three touchdowns. The defense did a good job keeping the Saints out of the end zone, limiting them to one TD and four field goals.

Kansas City was hoping for a revitalized passing game after last season and they got one Sunday. Alex Smith threw three touchdown passes, two to tight end Travis Kelce, who had 106 yards receiving on the day, and the Chiefs held on late to beat the Texans.

We expected the Broncos defense to be great, and they were, returning an interception for the winning score, picking off Joe Flacco in the end zone to clinch it, and limiting the Ravens to just 173 total yards. The problem is, the offense gained just 219 yards and threw a pick-six of its own.

The Bengals came out and crushed the Raiders, racking up a 30-0 lead before allowing two late touchdowns. Tyler Eifert had 104 yards and two touchdowns through the air, and both running backs, Jeremy Hill and Giovani Bernard, chimed in with 63 yards apiece on the ground.

Jordy Nelson or no, Aaron Rodgers found receivers to get the ball to Sunday, much as he has in the past. James Jones was the largest beneficiary in Nelson’s absence, catching two touchdowns against the Bears. Clay Matthews intercepted Jay Cutler late to keep Chicago at bay.

Karma for Russell Wilson’s tweet? The Seahawks started slow last year, let’s all remember, before we drop them much further than this. Still, while Jimmy Graham’s debut included a touchdown, Kam Chancellor’s absence was clearly evident in the defense’s play. The Legion of Boom needs him.

Just don’t ask them to win like that every week. And it was a costly victory, as Dez Bryant suffered a broken foot. Dallas got last-minute heroics from Jason Witten and Cole Beasley to redeem two costly mistakes. Tony Romo threw for 356 yards and three touchdowns.

Opening weekend was a bust. New arrivals Andre Johnson and Frank Gore combined for 55 yards. Andrew Luck had his worst game since, well, his last game (discounting the preseason). The best that can be said of the Colts Sunday is they hung around and made a go of it after falling behind 24-0.

The Tyrod Taylor era has begun in Buffalo. The big story on the day was the Bills always-remarkable defense, which limited the Colts to 304 total yards and pitched a shutout for the first half. Next up: getting more out of LeSean McCoy, who had just 41 yards on 17 carries in his debut.

The Rams made the Seahawks pay for pregame overconfidence and questionable playcalling. Unable to get it all done on the ground without Todd Gurley and Tre Mason, the Rams had to turn to Nick Foles, who threw for 297 yards on just 27 attempts in his debut.
