Daylight murder in Mission Hill grocery lot Shooting. A man in his 20s was found shot in a Stop & Shop parking lot. Boston Police were searching for a male suspect in the area of Mission Hill Wednesday afternoon after a shooting in a Stop & Shop parking lot near Alleghany and Calumet streets. Police found a man in his 20s in the parking lot suffering from several gunshot wounds around noon Wednesday, police said. He later died. The area is surrounded by several stores, a TGI Fridays and the Fenwood Road T stop.
A woman told Metro she and her 76-year-old mother were sitting in her car in the parking lot when they heard the shots go off. The woman, who asked that Metro not print her name, said she pushed her mother down to seek shelter away from windows until the violence stopped. “This is ridiculous,” she said. Wednesday afternoon, the pavement was still covered in shards of glass and a constellation of numbered green cones, one of which sat on top of a black Chevy sedan. A small crowd of people stood behind police tape while officers continued to investigate the parking lot,

Normally, a pity party is thought to be a solitary act of sulking and self-loathing. Someone throwing a pity party is embodying the dark clouds, and often the phrase is used by onlookers as a means of distancing themselves from the fun sponge. But Malden’s Greg Cook is looking to reshape what it means to suffer the pains of daily struggles in a unified environment. On Thursday evening, Union Square in Somerville will play host to block party dedicated to addressing all the sorrows and feeling all of the feelings as a means of getting it all out. “There’s a message in our society that discourages people from openly feeling sad,” party organizer Greg Cook said. “Sometimes, things go so far as to penalize people for expressing angst or sorrow. We need a way to have a healing laugh at our sorrows as a community.” With the help of the Somerville Arts Council, this party combines the need for absurdity combined with honest expression in order to exercise

the agonies and irritants that drag people down. “Mainly the Pity Party is aiming to be funny-sad,” Cook said. “But it’s also a chance to express our genuine sadness about troubles in our lives and the world. This Pity Party will be a funny exorcism of all that’s been getting us down.” Mopey clowns, depressive poetry, gloomy live tunes and ice cream, the staple of the sorrow diet, will be out for all to enjoy or suffer through. The City of Somerville Health Department will also provide information and resources about depression. The party starts at 6 p.m. NATE HOMAN

Man charged in bomb threats The Orange Line experienced severe delays yesterday after a man wearing a Guy Fawkes mask muttered that he would blow up the train. At around 9:30 a.m., police responded to a report of a man who muttered something about blowing up the Orange Line train he was riding on. MBTA Police responded to a report of a man wearing a Guy Fawkes’ mask at Back Bay Station making bomb threats as the Orange Line traveled
between Downtown Crossing and Tufts Medical Center. The initial search for the suspect came up empty, but the witness who called in the report was able to pick the man out from the T’s security footage. OďŹƒcers kept looking for the suspect and located him outside of the Tufts Medical Center Station on Washington Street. Joseph Johnson, 30, of Boston was charged with making a false bomb threat. Riot police fired water cannon and tear gas on Wednesday at migrants demanding to be let through Hungary’s newly shut EU frontier, while refugees at other Balkan frontiers clambered through cornfields in search of new routes. Hungary’s decision this week to shut the European Union’s external border with Serbia was the most forceful attempt yet by a European country to reduce the flow of refugees and economic migrants overwhelming the bloc. The move has left thousands of migrants scattered across the Balkan peninsula seeking alternative ways to reach the EU, and Hungary’s prime minister said his country planned to erect a fence along parts of its border with Croatia as well as on the frontier with Romania to stem the flow. Helmeted Hungarian riot police backed by armored vehicles took up positions at the now-barricaded border crossing with Serbia, where male migrant youths pelted them with stones, demanding to be allowed through. Property losses from a deadly Northern California wildfire, the most destructive this year in the western United States, climbed on Tuesday to at least 585 homes and hundreds of other structures that have gone up in flames. The latest tally, up from Monday’s estimate of 400 homes razed, came as firefighters gained some ground against the blaze, which erupted on Saturday and raced through several
communities in the hills north of Napa County’s wine-producing region. Thousands of residents were forced to flee, many without warning as neighborhoods burned around them. One elderly shut-in was later discovered to have perished in her home, and authorities have not ruled out finding additional victims. An estimated 13,000 residents remained displaced by evacuations, while the blaze, dubbed the Valley Fire, still posed a potential threat to some 9,000 buildings in the fire zone, roughly 50 miles west of Sacramento, the state capital. Oklahoma court issues last-minute halt of Glossip execution
An Oklahoma appeals court halted the planned execution of a convicted murderer, delaying his lethal injection for two weeks so it can consider evidence the inmate’s lawyers say points to his innocence. The court’s decision came about three hours before the state planned to execute Richard Glossip. “Due to Glossip’s lastminute filing, and in order for this Court to give fair consideration to the materials included with his subsequent application for post-conviction relief, we hereby grant an emergency stay of execution for two weeks,” it said. Taxis jam Brussels in Uber protest
Hundreds of taxis from across Europe jammed central Brussels on Wednesday in protest against the driver-hailing app Uber, closing tunnels and disrupting commuters’ journeys. Taxis drove slowly through the Belgian capital toward Schuman roundabout, which houses the European Union institutions, stopping at major intersections on the way and blocking two main routes. Mosquitoes may live long and prosper in warming Arctic
Rising temperatures at the top of the world may be bad news for Arctic denizens such as polar bears, but good news for the local mosquitoes, pesky bloodsuckers that prosper with warmer weather. Researchers said on Tuesday that increasing temperatures were enabling Arctic mosquitoes to grow more quickly and emerge sooner from their pupal stage, greatly expanding their numbers and menacing the caribou whose blood they eat. The ďŹ ndings illustrate the complex and unpredictable consequences of climate change, particularly in sensitive regions like the Arctic. REUTERS

Alison Brie likes it dark One more thing
Remembering Wes Craven The filmmaker Wes Craven passed away recently. You had a small role in “Scream 4.” What are your memories of him? He was one of the loveliest people I’ve ever worked with. And so funny. I was
obsessed with the “Scream” trilogy when I was younger, so much that I made a parody with friends in high school. It was called “Yell.” We had a guy in a suit and a mask and he would walk instead of run. It was really fun.
Alison Brie and Jason Sudeikis play friends who may be more than that in “Sleeping with Other People,” in theaters Friday. / IFC FILMS
Interview. The “Sleeping with Other People” star made an edgy rom-com. But she still likes normal rom-coms. Alison Brie laughs a lot when she talks, though she only does that half the time in “Sleeping with Other People.” She plays Lainey, who has a love addiction for a man she shouldn’t (played by Adam Scott). The only person who makes her perk up is Jake (Jason Sudeikis), with whom she should obviously pair off. Instead they remain (for now) friends. It’s a classic romantic-comedy setup, only one tempered by dark themes and brutal honesty. But that’s how she likes it. You voice Diane on “BoJack Horseman,” which is a very, very dark show. “Sleeping with Other People” can get pretty dark too. Are you actively looking for that tone in projects?
Absolutely. I love that kind of stuff. It’s what I like to watch as well. When things become a bit darker or unexpectedly dark, it really turns me on.
a while, and weirdly so. The characters are focused on falling in love, then eventually they do. I don’t think that’s how people date today.
There’s a will-theyor-won’t-they thing going on here, but their relationship is so deep that it almost doesn’t matter if they get together or not. It could go either way. Leslye [Headland, writerdirector] wrote a romantic comedy for cynics. It toes the line between being cynical and very romantic. The whole time you’re watching it you’re like, “Yeah, f— love.” [Laughs] At the same time you’re watching them fall in love. I like that, as the title suggests, we’re watching these characters fall in love but we also see them sleeping with other people, having sex with other people. It feels very current. It feels like the way people do date and have complex and confusing relationships with people at the same time they’re sexually active. Romantic comedies became very chaste for
Sometimes I think we’re a little hard on rom-coms. What’s your take on them? I love them. I love them. I’ll kind of watch all of them. I don’t love all of them, but I love it as a
genre. It took me a while. I agree: Everyone’s a little snobbish about them. I used to be as well. Then I realized I watch them more than any other movies. If they’re on cable and I’m flipping through channels, I’m always going to watch “Hitch” if it’s on. They’re feel-good movies.

Sci-fi. “Doctor Who” showrunner Steven Moffat wonders if the Time Lord is running from his past — or himself. Time is not on Steven Moffat’s side. When we caught up with the “Doctor Who” (and “Sherlock”) showrunner last month to talk about the sci-fi series’ ninth season, he was still writing it. “Whenever I go on holiday, wherever I am, sitting in an airport or car service, [writing] has been my fate,” he says. agenda — when he gets around to it between adventures. Any significance to the gender-swap of his rival, the Master, to Missy? It’s the same character; I don’t think Time Lords really mind about that sort of thing. [The Doctor] knows that it can happen in a regeneration. A given Time Lord is mostly male and occasionally becomes female, or is mostly female and occasionally becomes male.
Dreams and feelings were big themes last season. Is this Doctor less afraid to look inside himself? He has this great aspiration to be this man known as the Doctor who does the right thing and is never cruel and never cowardly — but we watch the show. We know that he’s frail, and he can be vain and he can be a bit up himself. He’s just somebody whose compassion is so boundless that when he encounters cruelty or tyranny, he can’t help but fight it.

Do you engage with the fandom online? I don’t go on forums and stuff because that could be very unpleasant for me. But there’s also some beautiful work being done. I like sometimes going on YouTube, actually, to see what they’ve been up to. My own television career is a result of getting excited about “Doctor Who” as a kid, so I take great satisfaction and joy in the fact that it still happens. Let’s settle the “Sherlock” crossover question. If you actually did the Doctor meets Sherlock Holmes — which will not happen — then where’s Sherlock at the end of that? He’s just learned there is intelligent life in the universe, and time travel is possible — he must now factor that into any deduction he makes. EVA KIS @thisiskis

When The Strokes guitarist Albert Hammond Jr. compares his first two solo albums to his new release, “Momentary Masters” (which came out July 31), he says he can’t even recognize the person who made the first two. “Luckily, I still like the songs, though,” he jokes. Hammond has undergone some major changes in the past few years. For one, he’s sober now. He also got married and bought a house upstate. “I thought it would be more shocking, but it’s not,” he says of leaving New York City. “I thought I might miss it more, but I don’t. I make

food, I exercise, I practice and do some work. Then I just have time to myself, working on the land or the house. It’s nice.”
It’s not the length of life, but the depth “Momentary Masters” is dedicated to a woman named Sarah Jones, who passed away two weeks after Hammond became friends with her. “She
wrote a Richard Pryor joke on Instagram and no one knew it was [about] Richard Pryor,” he says. “I wrote one back. She’s a friend of friends, so we just ran into each other and had an eight-hour conversation outside the park.” Hammond says they talked every day for the next two weeks and when he finished the album, he really wished
he could play it for her. “Dedicating the album to her was my way of playing it for her,” he says.
Pushing harder than ever before While “Momentary Masters” does explore big themes, such as morality and purpose, the lyrics are more metaphorical than literal. “‘Born Slippery’ is about looking at
the clouds and picking up on the warmth that can be found, and also the idea that ‘this too shall pass’ and even if you’re in a certain spot doesn’t mean it’s going to last forever,” Hammond says, explaining the first track on the album. While he says all the recent changes in his life did influence the album, the themes are ideas he thinks anyone can relate to. He says making the album was both exhausting and therapeutic. “Sure, it can be draining sometimes, but it can also be tremendously invigorating when you’re going just 100 miles per hour with ideas,” he says. Hammond says he really pushed himself on this album, forcing himself to try things that made him uncomfortable. “Everything from playing harder to singing a little out of range, and also keeping the energy [throughout] the record,” he says. “When you push yourself like that, at the end you can say, ‘Come check this thing out. I think it’s awesome and it deserves attention.’”

When Deep Ellum first opened in 2007, there wasn’t much to speak of on the Allston block the place inhabits. “There was nothing there. It was half going out of business, co-owner Max Toste says. A few years later, he opened Lone Star Taco Bar in the adjacent storefront, and since then the block has thrived. A similar scenario could play out around the second Lone Star location in East Cambridge, which opened this summer.
New place, familiar look Lone Star part 2 will be familiar to fans of the Allston incarnation. Much of the food menu is carried over, although a Torta Milanesa, a huge pork cutlet topped with refried beans, grilled pineapple, pickled onions, queso Oaxacan and habanero mayo is a gut-busting addition, as are some of the cocktails. Toste says he wanted to tailor the offerings to the different character of the neighborhood. “I felt like I could sell a lot more funky, cool wines, heavy on the rosĂŠs and orange wines and sherry,â€? he says. There are a lot more families in this neighborhood, which means they seem to eat more than the average Allston twentysomething. “We actually had to buy more high chairs,â€? he jokes.
Cocktail pairings Margaritas are a staple, as are other Mexican-style cocktails, such as the Paloma, made with tequila, grapefruit, lime, salt and grapefruit soda, and the Oaxacan Old Fashioned, made with mescal, tequila, agave and mole bitters. Other highlights include the Chica Facil, made with tequila, Aperol, lime, agave and chartreuse, and the Por mi Amante, which is a traditional Mexican infusion of strawberries and mescal made in a gimlet style with lime and sugar. The beer cocktail, made with tequila, Campari, lime and Stone Go To IPA, may be the only beer cocktail I’ve liked, though the Campari helps. “I think beer cocktails are stupid, Toste admits. “I find them to be completely lame 99 percent of the time. This is the exception that proves the rule.

Cape Breton’s Celtic colors If you thought “Celtic colors” were limited to Ireland’s famous 40 shades of green, think again.
Cape Breton Island, on Canada’s east coast, is home to a unique combination of music and culture, inspired by 19th-century settlers from Scotland and Ireland and influenced by the aboriginal Mi’kmaq people. The Celtic Colours International Festival is a celebration of this culture and, over its 19 years, has become one of Canada’s premiere musical events. Both the lineup and the audiences reflect its international appeal, but the welcome and hospitality are pure Nova Scotia. Communities all around Cape Breton host concerts, workshops, dances, storytelling and other events in venues ranging from state-of-the-art performance facilities to community halls and

Many of the world’s finest Celtic performers are on the bill along with exciting new names, but this festival is not all about headliners — there’s interaction too: Bring your instrument and head for one of the sessions where everyone plays together just for fun. You want to see this face all day at work, right? / PETBOT
Now your pets can take selfies too Stalk your cat. The PetBot gadget sends photos of your beloved animals to your phone to let you know they’re okay. Your pet doesn’t have to miss out on the selfie fad. The PetBot device takes self-portraits of your animals home alone and sends them to your smartphone so you can rest easy that your beloved companion is safe and sound. Harnessing what has been described as “petificial intelligence, the hardware detects sounds made by your pet, activating the device to take a video or photo sent to the owner’s smartphone. Currently raising funds on Indiegogo, the gizmo will sell for $149 and will ship in May of next year. “PetBot gives peace of mind to pet owners. They no longer have to wonder what is happening with their pet, says Jason Yu, the Toronto-based co-founder of the device.
Pets and their owners have managed without this contraption in the past, so why did you develop it? It’s to make both owners and pets happy when they have to be away from each other. The device is primarily for pets because it includes “petificial intelligence that allows pets to send notifications and selfies to their owners, surprising the owner and making them happy when they have to be away from their pet. Why should traditional pet owners care about such a device? It’s difficult for pet owners to always be with their pet. When they have to be away, there is currently no solution to have a meaningful interaction with their animal. PetBot is a smart pet-monitoring device that gives all pet owners peace of mind. It allows your critter to check in with their owners with selfies and also allows owners to check in with their pets by playing a sound and giving a treat. How does the PetBot work? The device includes “pet
recognitionâ€? that will detect when a pet is seen by the camera. Once seen, the device will automatically take a selfie, share it with the owner and give a treat to the pet as a reward. What is “petiďŹ cial intelligence,â€? and how does it work? The PetBot uses bark or meow recognition along with pet recognition to determine when to notify the pet owner. For example, if your dog is barking too much, petificial intelligence will notify the pet owner and also send a selfie for the pet owner to check what is happening with their pet when they are away. Do you have a vision for how to launch your device on the market? What price could it go for? PetBot has been in development for the last two years. We are raising funds for our campaign to support our first production run. Final price is not set, but people can get a great deal now at $149 from our campaign. IS YOUR POST-WEEK 1 FANTASY PANIC JUSTIFIED? The draft is the most important part of your fantasy football season. But not far behind are the decisions you make in the first two weeks. That’s because everything we thought we knew coming into the season now needs to be re-evaluated. We have actual games and data to examine — and even though it’s a tiny sample size — it can be more relevant than our offseason takes. For example, owners who gave up on Justin Hunter or went after Justin Forsett hard early last year turned a major profit. Owners who sold low on Eddie Lacy took it on the chin. Some Week 1 notes to act on:

Add these guys o the waiver-wire: •
Donte Moncrief, WR, Colts — T.Y. Hilton has a knee injury and Moncrief is way ahead of Philip Dorsett right now.
•
David Johnson, RB, Cardinals — This is a stash play as he’ll start o behind Chris Johnson while Andre Ellington (knee) rehabs again.
•
James Jones, WR, Packers — Jones isn’t good enough the Raiders or the Giants, but he’s Aaron Rodgers’ preferred red-zone target with Jordy Nelson sidelined.
We can see how the Broncos are going to win games this year. They’re going to be dominant defensively, slow the pace of the game and run the football. They won’t be throwing when they’re up 21 points in the fourth quarter like they used to. It’s a major issue for Peyton Manning’s box score and a serious issue for Demaryius Thomas as well. Far less volume and a little less efficiency spells trouble.
Dre Day no more Some will say it was just an elite Buffalo defense that shut down Andre Johnson in Week 1. I’d say it’s more. The Texans moved on from Johnson this offseason despite having little depth at wideout, a sure sign they thought he was
NFL News We used to know exactly where Richard Sherman would be on every play. He’d line up wide on the left side and shut down whoever came into his area. That changed in Week 1, as Sherman moved all over the formation — including a team-high 13 snaps in the slot. It’s bad news for our projection ability and bad news for Packers slot man Randall Cobb in Week 2.
done. That’s not a very far-fetched take on a guy who is 34 years old and was never a great redzone player anyway.
Taking on Tevin The gap between Falcons rookie Tevin Coleman and second-year man Devonta Freeman continues to widen. In Week 1, Coleman started and played 45 snaps (20 carries) while Freeman came off the bench for 28 snaps (10 carries). Tevin was far more effective, showing the burst we know he had but also impressively grinding through first contact. That was the biggest knock on him coming out of Indiana. With a featured role in a fast-paced offense and explosive big-play ability, Coleman is going to have some huge games.

Deategate duo back this week John Jastremski and Jim McNally are coming to a sideline near you. The duo, who were widely believed to have been responsible for the “deatingâ€? in “Deategate,â€? assuming improper “deatingâ€? was

ESPN last week that the league never made any such request. McNally typically only attends home games, so it is highly unlikely that he’d be in Orchard Park, New York, this coming Sunday when the Patriots take on the Bills. Jastremski could be present. METRO
