Deer Island memorials grow after Baby Doe ID Bella Bond. Mother and boyfriend have been arrested. It felt right to memorialize the child with a butterfly, a small multicolored one in balloon form at the end of a stick, Judie Vankooiman said. The tiny creatures had always been a comfort to the Winthrop resident of 30 years, especially so after her husband Kenneth (most called him “Van”) passed eight years ago. She founded a nonprofit in Van’s memory a few years ago, and the balloon was a leftover from a fundraiser last weekend. “It represents to me, life, I guess,” said Vankooiman, who wore butterfly jewelry in both her ears and around her neck. Investigators on Friday announced they had at last identified Bella Bond, the child who had been known only as Baby Doe after she was found dead on the Deer Island shore in June. Her mother, Rachelle Bond, and a man named Michael McCarthy were set to be arraigned Monday in connection with the child’s death. McCarthy has been charged with murder and Bond with accessory after the fact, investigators said. The news spurred new reflections on the tragedy from locals who had lived with the case for more

Many on Sunday stopped by to pay respects near a growing collection of toys and other items — a shiny red tricycle, stuffed Hello Kitty dolls, a bouquet of flowers fastened to a guardrail — arranged in three piles on a Deer Island footpath. Standing a few feet away from one, Vankooiman paused as a bright
orange butterfly flapped by in the Deer Island breeze. A sign, she said. “I just get chills. I’m speechless.” Ray Williams of Winthrop was also there, holding his 4-year-old daughter Kenzie in his arms. The case, and the drawn-out efforts to identify the girl, have been troubling, the father of four said: the billboards he passed on his commute, the signs plastered on store windows, the stream of posts on Facebook. And after many years of family biking trips on the footpath, he said it’s been tragic to see Deer Island linked to the

WWE. Local wrestler starring in movie about dogs getting married “The Dog Wedding,” a “bark-out-loud romantic comedy” with an unlikely local star, was set to make its world premiere at the Loews Theatre in Boston on Monday. Matthew Bloom, a WWE wrestler probably best known by his ring name Prince Albert, appears in the film alongside German actress Rosalie Thomass. Bloom is from Peabody.
“The movie is about how dogs bring people together, even those you would least expect,” Bloom said in a release. “I’ve had bulldogs my whole life and we’ve made all kinds of friends at the dog park. I can’t wait to share this film with the world, starting in my hometown of Boston.” The red carpet rollout for the film starts
at 7 p.m. and the movie screens at 7:30. All proceeds from ticket sales ($15) go to Canine Companions for Independence, MSPCA-Angell, Long Island Bulldog Rescue and Juno’s Place. A bonus: The movie’s promoters ran a photo contest for dogs in wedding garb, with 50 “canine couples” getting their pooches’ mugs in the movie’s credits. SPENCER BUELL

Foodie horde hits local grub fest Greenway. Locavores and vendors met at the gigantic Boston Local Food Festival on Sunday. Local eats, farm-to-table restaurants and startup app developers are as popular as ever these days, and all three were well represented at the Boston Local Food Festival on Sunday. Thousands of fans of all things sustainable and homegrown walked the Greenway for the fest, munching samples off of toothpicks, chatting with fishmongers and gawking at area chefs as they whipped up regional dishes for eager crowds. For My MilkCrate, a new company promising a directory app for green businesses, the big event was the platform for a citywide launch. “We make it easy” to find craft brewers, thrift

stores, organic farmers and the like, said Morgan Berman, CEO and co-founder of the Philadelphia-based company. “You can feel good about spending your money there.” There are about 500 businesses listed in the app, Berman told Metro,
among them every vendor featured at the festival. My MilkCrate was the fest’s official app, she said. Backyard Farms, a 42acre greenhouse in Maine, doled out samples of tomatoes sliced in quarters and speared with toothpicks. They sold bunches of tomatoes in cardboard
boxes for $3 a piece, or two for $5. A Backyard representative said they brought 2,000 boxes. The company supplies in-season-style produce year-round, and their products have made their way to coveted shelf space in Whole Foods and other supermarkets, said Jim
Darroch, marketing director. The operation burns a fair share of fossil fuels, particularly in the winter when tomatoes don’t grow in nature, but Darroch listed a number of greenminded choices the company has made, including recycling water collected
in gutters, coordinating shipping so the vegetables don’t travel more than 48 hours at a time. “We do our best,” Darroch said. Renowned barbecue champion Richard Westhaver was there, offering up samples of his spicy-fruity Dirty Dick’s Hot Sauce on tiny plastic spoons. His mastery of meatflavoring has won him five state barbecuing championships, a half-dozen titles in the “Snowshoe” competition (so named because it’s in February) and countless other titles even in barbecue throwdowns down south. The Boston Local Food Festival, though, is his favorite place to meet customers and sling sauce bottles, Westhaver said. He runs his operation out of Norwell. “This is the best one,” he said. “It’s near home.” SPENCER BUELL

Migration. Refugee crisis to test EU at summit of divided leaders Bitterly divided European leaders will seek to find a credible response to the continent’s worst migration crisis since World War II at an emergency summit next week. German chancellor Angela Merkel called on her peers on Sunday to accept joint responsibility. “Germany is willing to help. But it is not just a German challenge, but one for all of Europe,” Merkel told a gathering of trade unionists. “Europe must act together and take on responsibility. Germany can’t shoulder this task alone.” Striking a more skeptical tone on migration than in previous weeks, Merkel also warned that Germany could not shelter those who were moving for economic reasons rather than to flee war or persecution. “We are a big country. We are a strong country. But to make out as if we alone can solve all the social problems of the world would not be realistic,”

she told a gathering of the Verdi trade union. European Council President Donald Tusk, who chairs European Union summits, said on Twitter on Sunday following a weekend visit to Jordan and Egypt that the EU needed to help Syrian refugees find a better life closer at home. That will be one of the topics of discussion for Wednesday’s summit in Brussels as hundreds of thousands of refugees and migrants brave the
seas and trek across the impoverished Balkan peninsula to reach more affluent countries in northern Europe. The 28-member bloc has struggled to find a unified response to the crisis, which has tested many of its newer members in the East that are unaccustomed to large-scale immigration. On Sunday Hungary erected a steel gate and fence posts at a border crossing with Croatia, the EU’s newest member state. Overwhelmed by an influx of some 25,000 migrants this week, Croatia has been sending them north by bus and train to Hungary, which has waved them on to Austria. REUTERS

Pope Francis met Cuba’s revolutionary leader Fidel Castro on Sunday hours after warning Cubans to beware the dangers of ideology and the lure of selfishness as their country enters a new era of closer ties with the United States.
Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi said the meeting, which included Castro’s wife and other family members, was “very relaxed, fraternal and friendly.” Francis gave Castro several of his official papal writings, two books on spirituality and a book and CD on the writings of Father Armando Llorente, a priest who taught Castro in Jesuit prep school more than 70 years ago. Castro gave him a copy of “Fidel and Religion,” a 1985 book of interviews with a Brazilian priest

Republican candidate Carson says Muslims unfit to be US president
Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson on Sunday said Muslims were unfit to be president of the United States, arguing their faith was inconsistent with American principles. “I would not advocate that we put a Muslim in charge of this nation. I absolutely would not agree with that,” Carson told NBC’s “Meet the Press.” The remarks by Carson, who is near the top of opinion polls for the crowded field of Republican candidates, CARSON followed a

controversy that erupted when front-runner Donald Trump declined to challenge anti-Muslim comments made by a supporter on Friday. Carson, a Christian who says he got a core idea for his tax proposals from the Bible, said he thought a U.S. president’s faith should be “consistent with the Constitution.” Asked if he thought Islam met this bar, the retired neurosurgeon said: “No, I do not.” America’s largest Muslim civil rights group condemned Carson for his statement, which it said should disqualify him from the presidential contest because the U.S. Constitution forbids religious tests for holding public office. “It’s beyond the pale and he should withdraw,” said Council on AmericanIslamic Relations spokesman Ibrahim Hooper. Kerry says US ready to take more refugees
The United States will take in 15,000 more refugees from around the world next year, increasing the current level to 85,000, and to 100,000 in 2017, Secretary of State John Kerry said after talks with his German counterpart. The remarks may show an increasing willingness of the United States to help cope with the mass migration of Syrians although the offer is modest when compared with the hundreds of thousands that are moving alone to Europe and in particular, Germany. Kerry did not say how many of the additional refugees would be from Syria but pledged that the U.S. was ready to help. REUTERS

Two U.S. citizens held in Yemen have been freed and have arrived in Oman, the White House said on Sunday, following reports Yemen’s Houthi group had released three Westerners it held for months, including two from the United States and one from Britain. Their release was arranged with the help of Oman’s Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said, a spokesman for the National Security Council said in a statement, which also urged immediate resumption of peace talks aimed at ending fighting in Yemen. The two freed U.S. citizens are Scott Darden, 45, an employee of a Louisiana-based logistics company, and Sam Farran, 54, a security consultant from Michigan, according to the Washington Post. It’s hard out there for an actress starring in an awkward BDSM blockbuster franchise, yo. The latest life hurdle facing “Fifty Shades of Grey” star Dakota Johnson? Men being afraid of her. When asked by Ellen DeGeneres if people are more attracted to her or scared of her because of the film, Johnson responds, “If those are the two options, I guess they’re scared of me. They either love me or they’re running for the hills. Mostly running for
the hills.” And if that’s not bad enough, she also has to deal with even the briefest encounter leading to some unsolicited thoughts on the sure-to-be-Razzie-nominated film. “Sometimes people just say things that are a little bit awkward,” she says. “Like, I was in a cab recently and the driver was like, ‘My wife and I, we saw your film. We really liked it.’ And he goes, ‘I thought there could be more sex.’” Putting that one on my tombstone.

She was even more direct in discussing her own experiences: “I can assure you that whatever ‘straight privilege’ I sometimes get accused of having gets erased by biphobia,” she tweeted. “I still feel like we have to constantly prove ourselves and our worthiness within the community. Point being, it’s OK. We do exist. Don’t let anyone make you feel unworthy.”

Andy Samberg starts off the night with a song Emmys. There’s too much TV to watch out there, but Andy did his best. Andy Samberg broke into his Emmy-hosting gig with a long number about the sheer number of scripted programming to watch. In a pre-filmed bit, the comedian attended a cameo-heavy dinner party where he quickly learned how many shows he still hadn’t seen. His solution? An underground bunker, to watch every show he can.
The people who see him emerge at the end (Jon Hamm, Kerry Washington) are more horrified at how he smells after a year without showering than impressed with his TV watching. Samberg looked a little uncomfortable during the monologue. More than a few of his jokes fell flat, though he got a laugh when, in reference to Paula Deen joining “Dancing with the Stars,” he said, “If I wanted to see an intolerant lady dance, I would have gone to one of Kim Davis’ four weddings.” The first award of the night went to Allison Janney, for best support-
ing actress in a comedy, which was her seventh all time. She thanked Chuck Lorre, creator of “Mom” for creating such a “flawed character, and immediately thinking of me to play her.” Though she started out with jokes, tossing a makeup blotter away onstage (the red carpet had taken place in extreme heat), she ended on a more serious note, by saying how glad she was that her show offered a vision of hope to people suffering from addiction.

Colin Hanks knows a thing or two about family Interview. The actor returns to TV in the CBS sitcom “Life in Pieces. Colin Hanks isn’t coasting on his famous last name. After a turn in last year’s much loved “Fargo adaptation on FX, the actor is back on TV again this fall. This time, there will be significantly less murder involved. He joins an impressive ensemble on the sitcom “Life in Pieces. The show tells the story of a family through a series of vignettes about each member, from three siblings all in different life stages to their parents celebrating their golden
years. Hanks plays Greg, whose wife is giving birth to their first child. Your last show was a little more dramatic. Were you looking for something a little lighter, something that was more comedic? It wasn’t necessarily a question of lighter or darker, it was just finding the right project. I obviously waited a good seven years for something like “Fargo, and then they created something called an anthology series, and then you only get one year. Really it was about finding something engaging and interesting, and the premise of how we tell the story every week with life in pieces, that was really interesting. So it’s actually just as much a shock to me as it is anyone else. I really did not think I’d be on a network comedy after “Fargo. But I’m happy to do so. So was it a right project, right time situation? For me it was just all about trying to find something that was exciting and interesting. The fact that it’s a family comedy, but it’s told in a really unique way that no other show is doing, was really just too good to pass up. Because that’s the other thing with pilot seasons — you never really know. These things come to you and you wanna say, “I’m gonna hold off for some-

show and the script, I said yes because no one else had been cast yet. I just thought that the writing was so great and the premise was so good. A lot of shows would tell the story of a couple from courtship through to parenthood, but your story jumps right in at parenthood. Did you like that aspect? It’s not only that — I think there’s also something to be said about the fact that we’re not filling 22 minutes about new parents. We’re not looking to fill 22 minutes of baby humor. It’s really four, maybe five minutes. And even then it’s really still
more about the couple than it is about the baby. And so I found that the fact that we get to have these short stories, each one with a beginning, middle and end, it seems it makes things a lot more palatable. You’re able to tell proper stories with a beginning, middle and end as opposed to stretching stuff out. Are you going to watch the new season of “Fargo? Absolutely. I’ve already seen the first episode. It’s fantastic — can’t wait. LISA WEIDENFELD @LisaWeidenfeld

Johnny Depp: Not quite the bad guy One more thing
Not judging
In “Black Mass,” Johnny Depp transforms himself into the vampiric visage of Boston crime lord James “Whitey” Bulger. / WARNER BROS. PICTURES
Film. The star of “Black Mass” didn’t want his version of “Whitey” Bulger to be simply “devilish.”
Leaving behind roles
Johnny Depp has transformed into many odd characters over the years but none quite so unnerving as James “Whitey” Bulger in the new movie “Black Mass.” Depp, who plays the convicted murderer and crime boss of the Boston Irish mob called the Winter Hill Gang, wanted to give an unbiased representation of the still feared ’70s killer. The actor, speaking at a news conference at the Toronto International Film Festival, explains how he got into the skin and mindset of Bulger.
“Obviously, when you get a fictional character, you can take him to very strange places, and that is something that burned me quite a bit. But when I have to play a person who really existed or still exists, I feel much more responsibility on my shoulders. No matter if he’s good or bad, the responsibility exists because it’s a life. And that responsibility tells the truth on some level. That’s very important, as it is also important to physically show similarity.”
On doing his thing “Since I was about 19 years old, I’ve only relied on the work that interests me. That’s all that concerns me. And look what you get with 20 years of failure.”
“Once I finish a movie, I say goodbye to the character and look forward.”
On transforming into characters
Becoming ‘Whitey’ Bulger “It was very important to find the real James Bulger. I also have to say that I have been working with the same makeup artist for years, Joel Harlow, and he is brilliant because he managed to place a sculpture of Bulger on my face. Of course, we went
“My intention wasn’t sought to create someone devilish because I don’t think any of us are. Occasionally, you might get up in the morning and think this is a horrible person while you’re brushing your teeth, but I faced it as a multifaceted human being with a human side that also had his business. As we all know, there are certain businesses whose language is pure violence. And that’s the only way I saw it.”
through five or six different tests until we finally got it. It may have been bad for production and for whoever is putting down the money because it meant we had to be in the makeup room for a couple of hours every day.”
Meeting the real people (but not Bulger) “I actually contacted Bulger’s lawyer, Jay Carney, asking for the opportunity to meet Bulger to hear his version of the facts, because when I did the ‘Donnie Brasco’ story, I was fortunate to spend some time with Joe Pistone and was able to make many changes in the script that were not even remotely true. And with Jimmy Bulger, I don’t know what could have happened, because a week after my request, I got a message from Carney saying that Jimmy respectfully refused my request because he was not a big fan, as you can imagine, of any of the books that tell his story.”

About 250 million children worldwide lack basic reading, writing and math skills — and many don’t have access to schools that can help them learn. Pencils of Promise is helping pick up the slack. The nonprofit, founded in 2008, not only builds schools in the developing world, it also takes an active role in shaping the learning that goes on inside their walls. “We don’t want to just be known as a charity; we want to be known for our innovation,” says founder Adam Braun, who launched a Kickstarter to help fund PoP’s
and teachers
first school in Laos at the age of 25. “We want to determine what education will look like not just for Guatemala but also New York and New Jersey.” We talked with Braun and PoP Director of Impact Leslie Engle Young about how they’re changing the way we teach our kids.
PoP by the numbers • 300+ schools built • 30,000+ students served • 90 percent of teachers report increases in student engagement due to PoP programs • Students score 3x higher on language literacy tests than their peers
Get the community involved PoP is careful to treat the communities it serves not as charity cases but as partners. “We don’t want to be seen as these Westerners coming from the outside and telling people what they need,” says Braun. “We want to build actually locally sustainable projects.” Local communities that partner with PoP contribute at least 20 percent to the cost of building the school, either through labor or materials. The rest is funded by outside
donors. “When we visit a potential community, we spend a lot of time with the administrators, elders, teachers and students asking questions about what they want to see happen,” says Young. “That involvement really drives the partnership and makes them more invested.”
Utilize technology to empower students
Many schools can’t afford physical copies of books. PoP, therefore, uses tablets, e-readers and other creative materials to give students and teachers access to materials. (One e-reader can provide a student with 100 titles in both English and the local language.) “This is something that could change education in a more radical way,” says Braun. The access to technology also helps push one of PoP’s core principals, that of student-centered learning. “That informs the things that we do in teacher coaching sessions,” says Young. “How to get teachers to be involved in peer learning, how to make learning come to life in the classroom, how to use games and other materials. … It’s imperative that students learn how to learn — and that they want to learn.”

What we learned from NFL. Tom Brady and the Pats ripped the Bills on Sunday to move to 2-0 on the 2015 season. Buffalo fans need to be more careful about what they wish for, especially when it involves Tom Brady. One week after Bills fans chanted “We want Brady” throughout Ralph Wilson Stadium in the midst of a win over the Colts, the Patriots quarterback made his presence felt. The 38-year-old completed 38 of his 59 passes for 466 yards and three touchdowns, leading New England (2-0) to a convincing 40-32 win over the Bills (1-1). Brady’s 466 passing yard total was the secondhighest of his career in a single game. He improved his lifetime record against the Bills to 24-3 with the
late Bills rally.
Bills’ convincing win over the Colts in Week 1 was the stellar performance of Taylor in his first career start. Against the Patriots defense, however, the fifth-year quarterback looked much more like a career backup. The former Raven turned the ball over four times (three interceptions, one fumble) and was sacked eight times. After a game-opening touchdown drive, Taylor failed to lead Buffalo’s offense to a first down for five consecutive drives, allowing New England to build a double-digit lead. Taylor did come to life in the fourth quarter, throwing for a pair of touchdowns and running for another that helped the Bills make a game of it. Still, Taylor’s inability to find holes within the Patriots’ defense for the first three quarters led to a deficit too large to overcome.

the Pats’ win over Buffalo more formidable front lines in the NFL, and the Patriots opted against challenging that unit on Sunday. Instead, offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels elected to spread the Bills defense out from the team’s opening drive and stuck with that strategy all afternoon. The Patriots ran the ball just 15 times for 56 yards compared to a whopping 59 pass attempts. Only nine of those carries went to Pats running backs, and Brady instead feasted on an overmatched Buffalo secondary.
apparent within the passing game yet again, as he was a regular target for Brady in the flat, tallying 98 receiving yards on six catches. A fumble for the second straight week did not end up sending Lewis to Belichick’s doghouse. In past years, those transgressions would have earned a running back a seat on the bench, but Belichick stuck with Lewis for the remainder of the contest, showing how valuable a weapon he is to the Patriots’ attack.
