Americans are becoming less religious, judging by such markers as church attendance, prayer and belief in God, and the trend is more pronounced among young adults, according to a poll released Tuesday. A Delhi court on Tuesday jailed a driver of U.S.-based ridehailing company Uber for life for raping a passenger, in a case that highlighted the dangers faced by women from violent sex attackers. Driver Shiv Kumar Yadav received the maximum sentence after he was found guilty last month of the rape, kidnapping and criminal intimidation of the woman, who had hailed a ride home from a party in Delhi last December. FBI joins case of Weymouth man missing in Caymans The FBI is getting involved in the sevenmonth-old case of a missing Weymouth man in the Cayman Islands.

Norman Lee, a 47-year-old Weymouth comic book artist, was snorkeling with his wife about 250 feet from shore March 5 when the two were separated. He was not seen again.

At the time of his disappearance, it was reported that the currents were very strong. Cayman police told the Patriot Ledger that the reef where the couple was swimming is about 400 yards to 500 yards from a large oceanfloor drop that goes down several thousand feet.

His wife made it to shore and filed a missing persons report.

The search for Lee ended March 9, and officials switched gears to recovery mode, but have come up empty handed.

BRIEFS Baker on transgender discrimination: Courts can handle it The courts can handle cases of discrimination involving transgender individuals, Gov. Charlie Baker said Tuesday. His statements came as state lawmakers consider a bill that would extend protections for transgender people in public places.

Advocates have said the law would close a gap in antidiscrimination law, while opponents have said they are concerned about the way

the bill might force people to share bathrooms and locker rooms with transgender people.

“I’ve met with folks who’ve told me stories about individual incidents, but as I said, I don’t believe anybody should be discriminated against, and if anybody is we have a court system in Massachusetts that I believe can stand up for them,” Baker told reporters, according to SHNS. “I’m proud of Massachusetts’ track record on all issues associated with

discrimination and human rights, and I don’t believe anybody should be discriminated against, and I think the Commonwealth has a sterling record on these issues.”

In early October, advocates and opponents of the bill gave testimony at the State House, among them transgender youth and parents of trans children.

Speaking in favor of the bill at the hearing were Attorney General Maura Healey, Police Commissioner William Evans and District

Attorney Dan Conley. Senate President Stanley Rosenberg has also said he supports the bill.

The deadline to get bills on the governor’s desk this legislative session is Nov. 18. Baker’s statements to the media came Tuesday as his administration also announced changes to a government contracting program that aimed to boost partnerships with businesses owned by LGBTQ people, as well as veterans and people with disabilities. Pit bull stabbed after attacking dog Patrick Chatelain stepped out of his house looking for his pit bull, Havoc, who frequently wanders his Brockton neighborhood without a leash, only to find the dog lying on the ground bleeding from multiple stab wounds, according to a published report.

A witness said that a man walking his pit bull on Essex and Tremont streets Sunday when Havoc ran up and started fighting with the leashed dog. The owner of the leashed dog is said to have pulled out a knife and stabbed Havoc after the two dogs tangled.

“They were locked jaws on each other biting each other,” Valerie Koonce of Brockton told the Brockton Enterprise.

“The only thing he had was a knife and he just kept stabbing and stabbing and stabbing the dog. It was bad. After he got stabbed so many times he just ran on home and I knocked on

the door and told them to take the dog to the hospital.”

Koonce told the Enterprise that Havoc was the aggressor, but Chatelain said the dog owner brought his dog to the same hospital and was not suffering from any visible wounds.

“If they were both locked up on each other, how come his dog had nothing wrong with him?” Chatelain said. “My thing is he tried to kill my dog, he wasn’t trying to protect himself. He was trying to kill the dog, and that’s not right.”

Havoc underwent surgery and is expected to be fine. The man with the knife had not been identified as of noon Tuesday.

BRIEF Eight Virginia officers injured in fight with a naked man Eight Virginia police officers were recovering Tuesday from injuries during an attack by a naked man who allegedly set fire to his apartment, police said.

The incident took place when Fairfax County police officers responded to a domestic incident Monday at an apartment in Fairfax, a Washington suburb, police said.

Hussani White, 26, of Fairfax, who was naked, allegedly attacked two officers in a stairwell and hit them several times. He dragged an officer down a flight of stairs, police said. More officers responded, and pepper spray was used on White. He allegedly stuffed electronics and other items into his oven and set fire to the kitchen just before police arrived. Five officers were treated for pepper spray exposure, smoke inhalation and other injuries, the statement said.

Three other officers were checked for smoke inhalation at a hospital. White was charged with assault and attempted arson. REUTERS

Republicans trusts Trump on economy, nukes: poll In the wake of the third debate, candidate finding favor with GOP.

Donald Trump is the Republican candidate most trusted to manage the economy, deal with foreign leaders and serve as commander in chief, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll of Republicans conducted after the party’s third debate.

And more Republicans would trust him with the nation’s nuclear weapons than most of the rest of their party’s presidential primary field.

In terms of overall support, Trump was favored by 31 percent of Republicans polled by Reuters/ Ipsos in an online survey conducted Oct. 28 to Nov. 2 that had a credibility interval of plus or minus 4.4

percentage points. Retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson placed second with 18 percent. Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida and former Gov. Jeb Bush tied for third place with 10 percent each.

For anyone still confused about why Trump is holding strong onto a double-digit lead in most

presidential primary polls, look no further than at how much Republican voters trust him: Trump’s campaign message — that his experience in business means voters should pick him to negotiate trade deals or take on Russia’s Vladimir Putin — is resonating.

On the question of

whether voters trust the candidates to manage the economy, 59 percent said “yes” to Trump.

None of the other Republican candidates came close. Carson was second, with 36 percent saying they trust him to manage the economy. Rubio was third with 27 percent, followed by retired business executive Carly Fiorina at 25 percent.

It’s not just on the economy where Trump shines. Asked whether they trusted the various Republican candidates to be commander in chief, Trump and Carson were tied, at 40 percent each.

On the question of whom they trusted to deal with foreign leaders, Trump again got top marks, with 41 percent saying they would trust the New York real estate mogul. Carson was a close

second at 39 percent. Rubio, who has made foreign policy a central part of his campaign and stressed his experience on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, was third at 31 percent.

Asked about handling the nation’s nuclear weapons — another insight into voters’ views on foreign policy — 34 percent of Republicans said they would trust Trump.

He trailed only Carson, with 39 percent saying they would trust Carson to have his finger on the proverbial button.

Only 27 percent said they would trust Rubio. When it comes to the Oct. 28 debate, of those Republicans polled, a plurality, or 22 percent, thought Trump won. The poll appeared to show Trump and Carson garnering the most benefit from the debates.. REUTERS

Russia stance on Assad suggests divergence with Iran Russia does not see keeping Bashar al-Assad in power as a matter of principle, the Foreign Ministry in Moscow said Tuesday in comments that suggested a divergence of opinion with Iran, the Syrian presidentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s other main international backer.

Fueling speculation of Russian-Iranian differences over Assad, the head of Iranâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Revolutionary Guard suggested Tehran may be more committed to him than Moscow was.

However, a senior regional official cautioned against reading too much into the statements, saying there is no difference between Russia and Iran over him. They agree on his staying in office, and

Bobbi Kristina’s hospice nurse was a faker I don’t think anyone saw this one coming: One of the nurses who took care of Bobbi Kristina Brown during her final days was not a nurse at all but an imposter, according to TMZ. Taiwo Sobamowo was arrested in Georgia this week for identity theft, forgery and impersonating a nurse.

Sheriff’s officials believe she used the ID of an actual nurse with a similar name to gain employment at the hospice center where Brown was receiving care until her death in July.

Sobamowo has apparently done this before at a facility in Washington, D.C., and it’s unclear if her ruse was prompted in any way by Brown’s stay or if it was just a coincidence.

At a press conference last month, Olivier Rousteing, the 30-year-old creative director behind the label, discussed the collection and playful campaign video, which finds muse Kendall Jenner engaging in a dance battle.

“Balmain is couture. Balmain is a luxury French house, but it is also me,” said Rousteing. “I’m 30, I love dance, I love music, I love pop. And so we found a way mix it.”

With 1.4 million Instagram followers, Rousteing is known for his social media savviness as much as for his highglam designs. His spring 2016 presentation was the most Instagrammed fashion show of the season. But what does the designer get in return for putting so much of himself out there?

Why now is the time to sell in Greater Boston A homeowner was able to sell her house and move to a more convenient neighborhood.

Amy McHugh wasn’t seriously considering putting her home on the market.

But when a real estate agent friend posted on Facebook that “EVERYTHING is selling right now,” she got curious.

Eager to get her twin daughters into a better school system, McHugh, who is vice president at Greenough, had always toyed with the idea.

So with the help of Kristen Dailey of Success Real Estate, she made a few improvements around the house and put her three-bedroom, two-bathroom home in Weymouth on the market.

McHugh knew the home had some key selling points: It had a finished basement, and it was on a corner lot in a great neighborhood.

But even she didn’t predict this level of interest: There were

10 viewings of the 1,440-square-foot home in the first two days.

Within a week, the home sold for $344,000 — $64,000 more than the $280,000 she bought it for five years before.

McHugh is just another resident of Greater Boston who capitalized on one of the healthiest housing markets in the past 15 years.

In the Greater Boston Housing Report for September 2015, the Massachusetts Association of Realtors and Warren Group determined that sales of single-family, detached homes increased by 15 percent compared with September of 2014.

So why has this fall seen such a thriving seller’s market?

One reason is that all the sales made during summer — traditionally a booming sales season — are finally closing.

Another: Home values have increased, with the median sales price up 7.5 percent to $455,000 for a single-family home. And add to those factors a robust local job market and low interest rates.

Ed Deveau, a Realtor at Century 21 Mario Real Estate in East Boston, says many people are

realizing that buying a home may cost them less than renting in the long run.

“For buyers, interest rates are low, so even though prices are very high, they’re borrowing money at a very good rate. So it makes economic sense for them to purchase a home,” he says. “Also, rents in the area are very high, so in many cases, it could cost less to own than to rent.”

And then there’s Greater Boston’s housing shortage, which ensures that any property on the market gets at least a bit of attention.

“Inventory is low, so when your home hits the market, you’re going to have a lot of prospective buyers interested right away,” says Deveau.

McHugh says she and her daughters love their new home. The girls can walk to school, and the neighborhood is beautiful.

“Without the profit from the Weymouth house, I never could have gotten into my little dream house,” says McHugh. “As stressful as it was, selling was the best decision I ever made.”

The Patriots put the kibosh on both the rejuvenated Dolphins and any ideas they would be challenged for the AFC East title. Now the question becomes whether or not they can obtain home field advantage through the AFC playoffs.

The Panthers are still undefeated this season when Cam Newton gets at least 10 carries. And when literally anything else happens. They’ve now run the gamut of Seattle, Philadelphia and Indianapolis, and if they finish it up with a win against Green Bay next week, who can’t they beat?

Chris Johnson continues to show no signs of slowing down this season as he carried the rock 30 times, the first time he’s done that since 2010. Carson Palmer and the rest of the offense got on track again in Cleveland, and they didn’t even need John Brown, so he can use their bye to get healthy.

The Rams held onto second place in the NFC West with a division win that followed the same formula as their previous two wins: pound the rock on offense and play great defense. The passing game still hasn’t gotten on track, as they sit dead last at 32nd in passing yardage per game.

Well, if Oakland’s a top 10 team, are we expecting the Jets to beat a top 10 team with Geno Smith at the helm? That may not be a fair question, as Geno didn’t play terribly in his first action since a teammate broke his jaw. Chris Ivory hasn’t broken 50 yards rushing in two straight weeks.

The defense proved they could do it against anyone, even Aaron Rodgers. But the bigger revelation was the Denver offense, which saw the best games of the season from Peyton Manning, C.J. Anderson and Demaryius Thomas. Add to that the fact that they’ve liberated Vernon Davis from San Francisco.

It wasn’t pretty, but this was exactly the game Cincinnati has lost in the past. Andy Dalton played his worst game of the season, and then led a fourth quarter touchdown drive for the lead, the game, and a three-and-a-half game lead over Pittsburgh, their only competition in the division.

Both the Green Bay defense and offense were absent in Week 8. The defense allowed the Broncos offense, dismal so often this season, to roll right over them for 500 total yards. The offense meanwhile, endured a career low 77 passing yards from Aaron Rodgers.

It’s not always pretty, and the wins aren’t all against the best competition, but the Vikings have the eighth best record in the NFL, and are all alone in the second wild card spot in the NFC. Nobody has stopped Stefon Diggs yet. The second half of the schedule will test the Vikings, however.

It wasn’t easy to do, but the Raiders are inside the top 10. They’re eighth in the league in points per game and ninth in total offense and turnover differential, and they’re winning games, which many of the “better” teams are struggling to do. For that reason, they hold the top wildcard spot in the AFC.

Is there something we don’t know about the NFC East division title?

Because no one seems to want that thing. Especially not the Giants. One week after throwing for 170 yards and no scores in a win against Dallas, Eli Manning threw for 350 yards and six touchdowns in a loss. What?
