OBAMA COMMUTES MANNING SENTENCE

BRITAIN TO LEAVE EU SINGLE MARKET

In one of his final acts before leaving office, President Barack Obama commuted the prison sentence of Chelsea Manning, the former U.S. military intelligence analyst behind the biggest breach of classified materials in U.S. history, the White House said. Manning has been a focus of a worldwide debate on government secrecy since she provided more than 700,000 documents, videos, diplomatic cables

Britain will quit the EU single market when it leaves the European Union, Prime Minister Theresa May said, in a decisive speech that set a course for a clean break with the world’s largest trading bloc. The deep-sea search for missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 ended on Tuesday without any trace being found of the plane that vanished in 2014 with 239 people on board, the three countries involved in the search said. The location of Flight MH370 has become one of the world’s greatest aviation mysteries since the plane, a Boeing 777, disappeared en route to Beijing

Rittenhouse wall-sitting ban shelved Many park-goers stood in opposition to the ban against sitting on the wall. SAM NEWHOUSE @scnewhouse

sam.newhouse@metro.us

A new rule banning visitors to Rittenhouse Square from sitting on the park’s stone walls has been terminated after a massive backlash. “I sat on this wall for the first time in 1967, and no one’s going to tell me I can’t sit here,” said Lauren Blanchard, 68, who planted herself atop the wall Tuesday during a “Sittenhouse” protest along with dozens of others protesting the rule. But earlier in the day, the no-sitting rule had quietly been spiked. “No sitting” signs were replaced with ones reading, “This is a smoke-free park.” A police cruiser stationed in the park for weeks was also gone. Many park-goers, mostly young people, sit on the stone walls in the park and have done so for decades. Reports of police officers starting to order people off the walls after the new rule took effect last week sparked intense criticism on social media, and two protests of the ban were scheduled this week. Some Sittenhouse protesters carried signs, with messages like “Go sit on it!” and “Your racism is an eyesore.” Blanchard said the new rules was “wellintentioned but wrongheaded” and poorly timed given the political

climate. “This was just the wrong time to say we would like the young and black people to get away,” she said. Even Mayor Jim Kenney had criticized the rule on social media over the weekend and told people not to obey it. This week he directed the rule be rescinded. “The concerns that park users have expressed about litter, vandalism, the structural safety of the wall and smoking [anything, not just pot] in the park are legitimate,” said Ajeenah Amir, a

spokeswoman for Kenney, “but I think everyone agrees that banning wallsitting and using police to actively enforce that was an overcorrection.” The Friends of Rittenhouse Square, which has poured millions into preserving and beautifying the park, had created the new rule in conjunction with police and the department of Parks and Recreation. It was brought about in part due to a shooting in the park in October, and reports of increased drug sales and illegal activity. Banning sitting on the

wall seemed like a good solution to worsening quality-of-life problems in the park, said Vicki Bayle,

“I sat on this wall for the first time in 1967, and no one’s going to tell me I can’t sit here.” Lauren Blanchard

76, who identified herself as a member of the Friends group. “While Love Park is under construction, it seems the drug dealers come here,” Bayle said.

edged the concerns of the neighbors, she indicated those issues can be addressed without having police officers enforce a no-sitting ban. “Parents should be able to take their kids to the park and not have to worry about exposing them to secondhand smoke,” she said. “And if there’s an open park bench, we encourage people to sit there first. PINT-SIZED PROTEST Philly kids prepare to rally ahead of inauguration An unlikely group is leading a rally in Philadelphia Wednesday, and has attracted dozens to join its cause. Children of all ages will march outside the Liberty Bell in solidarity with movements of resistance taking place around the country ahead of Inauguration Day. With homemade signs and chants about inclusion, they are welcoming people of all ages and backgrounds to join their movement. The sight of kids leading a

protest is different, but certainly not unheard of. Perhaps most notably, Alabama schoolchildren who witnessed their parents’ involvement in the civil rights movement led a crusade more than 50 years ago. Trained in nonviolence tactics, kids in the Birmingham Children’s Crusade of 1963 were arrested, beaten with batons and threatened. Still, they marched and sang protest songs, as photos of Alabama’s violent crackdown circulated nationwide, sparking

outcry. The kids, some of them as young as 7, persisted and were ultimately triumphant. Rally organizer and mom of four Julie Wilgus believes children deserve the opportunity to be heard, and is creating the platform to do it with the Philly Kids’ Solidarity Rally. Wilgus told Metro that while the assumption about kids in protest is that they are acting on their parents’ beliefs, the reality couldn’t be further from the truth. “It’s not really important to me

that my kids hold the exact same opinions, but rather them having the freedom to believe what they want to believe, and research what they want to believe,” Wilgus said. The rally itself doesn’t have much of a political slant, she said. While Wilgus’ kids have an Instagram account showing their support for former Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, today’s event is more about solidarity and empathy for vulnerable communities. The number of Democratic Congress members planning to skip President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration this week is growing following a widely criticized dossier alleging close ties between Trump and Russia, and the president-elect’s sharp words for civil rights leader, Rep. John Lewis ahead of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. As of Tuesday morning, 28 members of Congress have publicly said they will protest the inauguration in Washington and in their districts instead of attending Friday’s event.

Three Pennsylvania congressmen have announced their intent to skip the inauguration. Rep. Brendan Boyle In a statement Monday, Rep. Boyle called Trump a “unique threat” to the Constitution and the U.S., adding that he won’t participate in Friday’s celebration. “I accept the decision of the people,” he said. “I respect it. But I will not celebrate it.” Rep. Bob Brady Brady, chairman of the Philadelphia Democratic Committee, told multiple news outlets Monday he does not plan to attend. Rep. Dwight Evans The Philadelphia representative said in a tweet Monday he will not attend the inauguration because “Russian hacking must be investigated and I do not support the repeal of ACA.”

BOMB SCARE 300 evacuated at Temple University over suspicious package The Temple University College of Engineering building was evacuated Tuesday morning after police found a suspicious device with wires poking out of it. The object was found to be harmless but is being investigated as a possible intentional hoax. Police responded around 9 a.m. to reports of a 4-foot-by-4foot “wrapped packaged with orange and red wires exposed in the loading dock” of the building, located at 12th and Norris streets. It was discovered around 9:02 a.m. A second package, believed to be related to the first, was in a trash truck nearby. Temple sent out a text alert to students about a “suspicious package” at 9:15 a.m., adding they should “Use caution. Avoid the area. Police are responding.” Approximately 300 students and staff were evacuated. Some of those students took to social media to complain about the incident. Temple gave students the all-clear around 11:30 a.m. after the bomb squad checked out the item. But it remains under investigation as to whether this was an intentional hoax or not. SAM NEWHOUSE

Fla. airport shooting suspect inspired by Islamic State Santiago was a private first class in the National Guard who served in Iraq from 2010 to 2011. An Iraq war veteran accused of killing five people at a Florida airport told investigators he was inspired by Islamic State and previously chatted online with Islamist extremists, an FBI agent testified on Tuesday, U.S. media reported. Esteban Santiago, 26, was ordered held in jail until a Jan. 30 arraignment, court records show. At that time he would enter a formal plea to charges that he opened fire in the baggage claim area of the Fort Lauderdale airport on Jan. 6. “He has admitted to all of the facts with respect

to the terrible and tragic events of Jan. 6, Assistant U.S. Attorney Rick Del Toro said at the federal court hearing in Fort Lauderdale, NBC 6 South Florida television reported. “These were vulnerable victims who he shot down methodically. Reuters was not immediately able to reach U.S. prosecutors or the Federal Bureau of Investigation to confirm the media reports. Santiago traveled from Alaska to Florida with a handgun and ammunition in his checked luggage, officials said. Upon retrieving his gun case from the luggage carousel, he went to a bathroom to load the weapon and then opened fire on others waiting for their bags, investigators said.

FBI special agent Michael Ferlazzo testified Santiago told interrogators he carried out the attack on behalf of Islamic State and that he had been in contact with others on jihadist chat rooms who were planning attacks. “It was a group of likeminded individuals who were all planning attacks, Ferlazzo said, according to NBC 6. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg took the witness stand in Dallas federal court Tuesday and denied an allegation by a rival company that the virtual-reality technology of Facebook’s Oculus unit was stolen. The publisher said Oculus unlawfully gained access to ZeniMax’s intellectual property while developing the virtual-reality system that includes the Rift headset. Zuckerberg told a jury in the crowded courtroom that those claims are false. “Oculus products are based on Oculus technology,” he said. the purchase of Oculus included not only the $2 billion price but also $700 million to retain employees and $300 million in payouts for reaching milestones. Zuckerberg said the Oculus deal was done over a weekend in 2014, which Sammi said in court does not show due diligence. At the time, Zuckerberg testified, he was not aware of the claims against Oculus. The lawsuit, in the sixth day of a jury trial, relates in part to programmer John Carmack. Well-known for helping to conceive games such as “Quake” and “Doom,” Carmack worked for ID Software before that company was acquired by ZeniMax. He is now the chief technology officer at Oculus. Lindsay Lohan probably didn’t convert to Islam, OK? The artist formerly known as LiLo is at it again. Over the weekend, Lindsay Lohan scrubbed her entire Instagram, leaving her 5.7 million followers the words: “alaikum salam, an Arabic greeting that loosely translates to “peace be unto you. And if you’re thinking: “What even is happening?! — you’re not alone. Her landlord’s (Annette Bening) tenants also include her teenage son (Lucas Jade Zurman), a teenage girl (Elle Fanning) and a 40-something fix-it man (Billy Crudup). unaware of the looming Reagan ’80s. For one thing, making a movie set in 1979 means you get to do a deep dive in the music from that era, which is some of the greatest, coolest music ever recorded. I know music pretty well. There were some deep cuts for me, particularly in the punk scenes, like The Raincoats and The Slits. I had heard of them, but I didn’t know a lot

about them. They didn’t feel like they were mine. When I was getting into the character and listening to the music, I really felt like I took ownership of that music that had seemed more oblique to me. Did you have a favorite among the bands you’d never really listened to before? I’m all for The Raincoats. They’re great. I can always tell when I love a song if

my overwhelming sense is I want to put it in a movie. [Laughs] That’s when I know I love it. In a way, putting a song in a movie is almost forcing people to enjoy it the way you enjoy it — because they’re presumably trapped watching your movie. This is one of many new films that seems relevant after the election. The scene where they watch Jimmy Carter’s “Crisis of Confidence” speech — it’s as though he was speaking about right now. That speech is strangely prophetic;

buying. And he’s talking about not buying. That’s pretty wild. And nobody heeded his warning at all. [Laughs] They just ran full steam into the ’80s and ’90s, right up to today. We just love buying s—! [Laughs] The feminist literature we hear about in the movie is scarily timely, too. A lot of that stuff felt like it could have been written yesterday. It’s all the exact same problems. It’s not different at all, I’m sorry to report. That was fascinating to put myself in that mind-set, of what it would feel like to encounter these ideas for the very first time.

I love L.A. This presents a really fascinating portrait of California, too. Even though you’re a New Yorker now, you were born and raised there, so it must be particularly resonant. I’m a California girl. My brother’s still there, my sister’s there, most of my family’s there. I’m deeply related to California. It’s so odd because I don’t think anyone associates me with California. I grew up in Sacramento, and Annette grew up in San Diego. We talked a lot about the peculiarities of California that I think are often missed. When people think of California, they think of Los Angeles and San Francisco. The truth is there’s a very deep, very powerful conservative bent that runs through California, in San Diego, in Santa Barbara, in Sacramento. We are the home of Reagan. Joan Didion, when she started, she was conservative, she was a Republican, 100 percent. She thought all that hippie stuff in Haight-Ashbury was ridiculous. That’s the side of California that Annette’s character is in opposition to. It’s something I really understood. I just hadn’t had the pleasure of being in a film about that side of California.

Skip the airfare: We found your Roman Holiday. Set against lush greenery, this Mediterranean gem was built in 1935 by local architect John Irwin Bright in a classic villa style, which he observed spending years abroad in Europe to study French and Moroccan architecture. With arched doorways and windows, terra cotta details and a terrace overlooking custom gardens, this stunning home dares you to live out your days living like the Europeans do. For just shy of $1.2 million, you’ll get to live at 100 Cherry Lane in the coveted Philly suburb of Wynnewood. The home features five bedrooms, three-and-a-half bathrooms and the property sprawls over more than 45,000 square feet. This grand-looking home includes a number of distinctive features, including an asymmetri-

cal facade with a set of stairs ascending from the brick driveway to the arched double front doors, a partially-exposed terrace outfitted with arched entryway and a second-story balcony off the master bedroom. The interior has been impeccably maintained and renovated by the home’s current owner. Enter through the oversize Brazilian mahogany front doors into an impressive foyer featuring slate-tile floors a fireplace and builtin bookshelves. Follow through to the living room, where an arched fireplace and exposed wood beams evoke a cozy, even romantic feel. Three wrought-iron

French doors open to the backyard terrace, perfect for entertaining guests or taking your morning espresso. The kitchen has been completely renovated, and features top-of-theline appliances and noir granite countertops. But it’s not all new: A Franklin stove, named after the Philly-loving Founding Father, accents the breakfast room in an arched indent. Upstairs, the master bedroom and en-suite bathroom are flooded in natural light and windows overlooking the property. Additional bedrooms feature walkin closet space, full baths and views of the garden’s pristine maintenance.

The noise from ESPN’s “First Take” and FS1’s “The Undisputed” provides great background sound for gym locker rooms and dentist offices, but it’s decidedly unhealthy to, ya know, actually listen to the manufactured things these people are saying. All cynicism and jealousy aside, here’s a fun fact about “First Take.” Wildly popular host Molly Qerim is dating wildly popular “NBA on ESPN” personality and former NBA player Jalen Rose. UNSOLVED MYSTERY Pro wrestling legend Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka died on Sunday and WWE ran a tribute to him Monday. What’s crazy about this wrestling death is that the 73-year-old Snuka had murder charges dropped against him just two weeks ago as he was deemed not competent to stand trial. A longstanding wrestling rumor was

that Snuka murdered his girlfriend in 1983. Snuka’s story was that he found his girlfriend, Nancy Argentino, dead in a hotel room with three dozen cuts and bruises. Officials determined at the time that she was hit consistently with a stationary object before dying. File under unsolved mystery that will never be solved.

Former Eagles linebacker Emmanuel Acho tweeted out during the Patriots-Texans game: “To think, I got traded for #DionLewis back in 2013 … someone needs to be fired for that. He a beast!” Acho is currently unemployed in football and Lewis had three touchdowns against Houston. Former Browns (and Eagles) executive Joe Banner played along, tweeting at Acho, “I traded you for Dion and got fired. Go figure! Hope you are well.” For the record, current Eagles executive Howie Roseman was the one who brought Acho to Philly and shipped Lewis to Cleveland. ALL PHOTOS GETTY IMAGES

For No. 1 Villanova, the opponent doesn’t even matter anymore The Wildcats are back on top and validating their No. 1 ranking with demolishing victories. JON MARKS @MetroPhilly

sports@metro.us

If you think the reason Villanova’s Josh Hart, Darryl Reynolds, Mikal Bridges and company were diving for loose balls and challenging every shot like the game was on the line — rather than playing with a 30-point lead — was because they were trying to avenge their 2016 Big East title game loss to Seton Hall, then you just don’t know these Wildcats. To them there was no hidden agenda. Pirates were simply the next game on the schedule. And if you think the fact

the Associated Press pollsters moved them back to No. 1 — jumping right over No. 2 Kansas — gives the Wildcats any extra incentive, forget that notion, too. If anything it’s one more distraction Jay Wright could do without. But to any objective observer witnessing the Cats thorough 76-46 destruction of the Hall on Monday night, clearly this is a team worthy of such acclaim. “They can compete with anybody,“ said Bill Raftery, analyzing the game for Fox. “They play excellent defense and they have a really tough schedule. “They deserve No. 1. It’s good for the fans. Good for the school and it doesn’t hurt recruiting. I asked Jay about it and he said it only counts in March. But anything can happen.â€?

“It’s nice, said senior center Darryl Reynolds of the accolades. “You appreciate it, but then you move on. Like Coach says, it can do nothing but distract us. It’s not our job (to impress the pollsters, with the coaches poll putting Kansas on top and Nova No. 2). “Our job is to go out and play Villanova basketball and leave the numbers to the numbers guys. But they all knew they failed to play “Villanova basketball, against St. John’s Saturday, struggling most of the way, before finally putting away the feisty Red Storm, 7057. Wright didn’t have to say a word, He just let them watch the film and seniors Reynolds, Hart and Jenkins took it from there. The result was 40 minutes of relentless hoops, where the scoreboard seemed to-

tally irrelevant. “That’s the consistency issue we talk about,â€? Reynolds said. “We’re playing like we’re down 30 or 20 or not at all. “Doing all those things, no matter what the score, builds on that consistency.â€? The opponent doesn’t matter, either. “It’s our next game,â€? said the 6-foot-9 Reynolds, who helped guide Lower Merion High to the 2012 State title, then spent a year at prep school before coming to Nova. “Villanova-Seton Hall been going on long before any of us got here. They did beat us last year for the championship, but it was our next game, so we just wanted to improve.â€? The Pirates can assure you they did, as No. 1 Villanova emphatically stated its case, winning a school record 47th straight game at the Pavilion in the process. “It’s just a number,â€? Jenkins said. “We could lose our next game and wouldn’t be No. 1 anymore.â€? It’s precisely that attitude why these top Cats figure to stay there for awhile instead.

Aries Don’t take action based on assumptions. Learn from your experience and take a disciplined approach in order to make things unfold to your advantage.

Libra Stay calm, and refrain from making assumptions or impulsive moves based on information that isn’t conclusive. Listen carefully and respond with diplomacy.

Taurus Focus more on what you can do for others without compromising your personal or professional position. Putting in extra hours will lead to unexpected benefits.

Scorpio Avoid anyone trying to use guilt or emotional manipulation to sway you. Stay focused on what’s important to you and strive for perfection, satisfaction and success.

Gemini When opportunity knocks, you have to be ready to size up what’s being offered and make your move. Don’t trust anyone but yourself when it comes to fact-finding.

Sagittarius You’ll face confusion and uncertainty. Don’t be fooled by someone trying to persuade you to do something that isn’t healthy.

Cancer When in doubt, take a breather and let the chaos or confusion subside. Pour your attention into self-improvements that will raise your qualifications or skills.

Capricorn Doing too much too fast will jeopardize your chance to improve your life financially, emotionally and physically. Be a leader, not a follower.

Leo Don’t wait for change to happen when you can be the one to initiate what you want to see unfold. Do your part and show your leadership ability.

Aquarius Make personal changes that will lower your overhead and improve your life. Having more money to pursue what you enjoy doing will brighten the picture.

Virgo Refrain from any inclination you have to take on too much or to overspend. Moderation, hard work and determination will be rewarding. Romance is on the rise.

Pisces Getting angry will not solve your problem, but taking positive action will. Use your intelligence to make a plan that will encourage everyone to pitch in. EUGENIA LAST
