ASSANGE SAYS HE STANDS MEXICO EXTRADITES BY US EXTRADITION OFFER ‘EL CHAPO’ TO US
1
WikiLeaks’ founder Julian Assange, who has been holed up at Ecuador’s London embassy since 2012, said on Thursday he stood by his offer to be extradited to the United States providing his rights were protected. Assange said last week he would accept extradition if former military intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning were freed and on Wednesday U.S. President Barack Obama commuted Manning’s
35-year sentence, meaning she will be released in May. “I stand by everything I said including the offer to go to the United States if Chelsea Manning’s sentence was commuted,” Assange said in a live online audio news conference. “It’s not going to be commuted [until] May. We can have many discussions to that point.” REUTERS

Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman has been extradited from a prison in Mexico to the United States, the Mexican government said on Thursday, one day before Donald Trump assumes the U.S. presidency. Guzman was one of the world’s most wanted drug kingpins until he was captured in January 2016. Six months earlier, he had broken out of a high-security penitentiary in central Mexico through a mile-
long tunnel. “The government ... today handed Mr Guzman Loera to the U.S. authorities,” the foreign ministry said in a statement, referring to a court decision rejecting a legal challenge by his lawyers against extradition. Guzman was being held in a prison in the infamously violent border city of Juarez in the northern state of Chihuahua where his Sinaloa cartel won a bloody drug war against rivals. REUTERS
MNUCHIN DRILLED OVER OFFSHORE TAX HAVENS
3
Treasury Secretary nominee Steven Mnuchin said he would work to eliminate the need for offshore tax havens, as Democratic senators accused the Wall Street veteran of using such vehicles to shelter hedge fund money from the government. In a confirmation hearing before the Senate Finance Committee, Presidentelect Donald Trump’s pick to lead the Treasury was attacked for fail-
ing to promptly disclose he was a director of an offshore business vehicle domiciled in the Cayman Islands and owned more than $100 million in real estate. Offshore tax havens used to shield income have become a symbol of the growing divide between rich and average Americans. REUTERS
EXECUTIVE ACTIONS READY TO GO AS TRUMP PREPARES TO TAKE OFFICE

Donald Trump is preparing to sign executive actions on his first day in the White House on Friday to take the opening steps to crack down on immigration, build a wall on the U.S.-Mexican border and roll back outgoing President Barack Obama’s policies. Read more about this story on page 14.

HOPES FADE UNDER AVALANCHE IN ITALY
4
Hopes of finding survivors dwindled on Thursday more than 24 hours after an avalanche struck a luxury mountain hotel in Italy burying up to 30 people under tonnes of snow and debris. The Civil Protection department said just two bodies had been recovered but its chief said the search for victims and possible survivors would continue through the night.
“There is always hope, if there were no hope the rescuers wouldn’t give everything they’ve got,” Fabrizio Curcio told reporters. He said his teams would “continue to do everything possible during the night,” even though conditions were far more difficult than in daytime. The disaster struck hours after four earthquakes with a magnitude above 5 hit central Italy. REUTERS

Today is a big day. HUGE! Donald Trump will be sworn in as the 45th President of the United States. A lot of people are saying that it will be the best inauguration. That it will make inaugurations great again. Anyone who says otherwise is a disaster. Little credibility! Fake news! Very unfair. Bad. It’s rigged. Jokes aside, today marks the end of one era, and the beginning of another. We don’t know if it will be better, or worse— but we know it will be extremely captivating. What else would you expect from the first President from Queens? We at Metro are unbiased
towards politics, but deeply care about topics that influence your daily life. Donald Trump has invaded our homes — and Facebook feeds — in recent years, but in the next four, his impact will be felt worldwide. In this issue — and on our website, Metro.us — we will continue to answer the question of how the world will look with this unexpected leadership—and what it’ll do to you. With that in mind, we can’t help but wonder what America will look like four years from now. What do you think? What do you want to happen? Tell us on Facebook and Twitter, and use the hashtag #Inauguration2021. We will print the best comments in Metro’s Monday edition.

Massive crowd expected for Women’s March on Washington Gloria Steinem, Angela Davis, Scarlett Johansson are among those slated to speak at the post-inauguration protest. WENDY JOAN BIDDLECOMBE @MetroBOS letters@metro.us
Less than 24 hours after Donald Trump becomes the 45th president of the United States, an estimated 200,000 women and men are expected to march in Washington to demand that elected leaders “act to protect the rights of women, their families and their communities.” The idea for the Women’s March on Washington started when a grandmother in Hawaii suggested to her friends that they should travel to the capital as a Million Women’s March, according to the organization’s website. About 40 immediately responded that they would be willing to join her. The movement blossomed with a Facebook post that went viral following Trump’s victory. Since then, the march has

grown to encompass human rights issues beyond women’s issues, including immigration and the treatment of Muslims and the LGBT community. Organizers have announced a roster of speakers at the event. Among them are activists Gloria Steinem and Angela Davis, actresses Scarlett Johansson and Ashley Judd, and Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards. Some of those plan-
ning to attend are seasoned veterans of political activism and protest. For others, participating in the march will be a new experience. Shawna Wright of Beverly, Massachusetts, had planned to attend the inauguration — of Hillary Clinton. That didn’t work out. The march offers a post-election way to show the incoming Trump administration that there still is a large, vocal oppo-

sition, she said. “I think we feel in the wake of this election like, ‘Oh my God, how did we miss this, maybe we are in the minority, maybe we are grossly outnumbered,’
What do you hope this march will convey to President Trump? “It’s important that we show the country that we disagree with the hateful rhetoric and fear mongering and these hateful tactics [employed by Trump]. This doesn’t reflect what the United States stands for. … That’s why I’m going.”
Carole Treston
Michelle Pauls
“He [Trump] doesn’t really listen, so this is more about a ground swell of energy. We need to match that energy [that got Trump elected] with a different kind of energy. We are on Obamacare. To take our health care away, that’s so scary.”
“It’s important for me to go so we can say that this treatment of women is not acceptable. There are many levels of it, but [Trump] never apologized for the language he used. He called it ‘locker room banter,’ but that’s not it. You’re breaking the law. That’s sexual assault.”
Barbara Simmons
Teri Ramsey
“For me, it’s just the general insanity we are at right now. I just hope they listen to the messages we are trying to convey. And, I hope [Trump] realizes how important it is to listen.”
and I don’t think we are,” Wright said. Marni Halasa, a professional figure skater in New York City, has joined the post-election demonstrations outside Trump
Tower in Manhattan. She has donned an elaborate leopard outfit for those protests which she says is intended to remind people about Trump’s coarse comments about women. “I’m marching for power to be returned to ordinary citizens and mass movements like this can change policies,” Halasa said of her participation in the Washington march. Halasa added that the march also provides an opportunity to share ideas. “Protest is very transformative,” she said. “When you come together and talk and learn more about the issues, you become inspired and take a little of that with you wherever you go. The fight continues.” Alexandra Sherer, 21, an NYU student and a Republican state committeewoman, said she feels the march is “a waste of time.” She voted for Trump, although she was troubled by the “Access Hollywood” outtake video of Trump bragging to Billy Bush about groping women. Metro staff writer Kristin Toussaint contributed to this report.
SIGNAGE A sign of the times: Preparing to protest Ahead of the Women’s March, poster-making events were held across New York City for marchers to visually prepare for the event in Washington. Hazel Morley, 30, hosted a small gathering at her Ridgewood, Queens, apartment last Sunday. With the scent of magic marker and Aperol Spritzes in the air, Morley, who works as a men’s clothing designer, said making her grievances heard through art was a natural impulse. “Being a designer, you ask yourself how you can get involved and how you can make change,” Morley said. “So I figured why not put my skills to use.” Posters created over the afternoon included slogans that read “Grab This Pussy” — accompanied by an image of
glittery female anatomy — and “My Body My Rights.” Morley said she is planning to drive to D.C. early Saturday morning with seven friends in a rented van so that she can personally advocate for a woman’s right to choose and for paid family leave. “It seems like that should be a bipartisan support area.” She said. “I think it’s really important for us to be marching on the doorstep of the White House to show that we’re here and we’re 51 percent of population. Now that the election is over, I think it’s more about sending the message on what policies you want supported. “It’s more productive. And I think almost, deep down, because Trump is from New York, that he’s more progressive than a typical Republican.” WENDY JOAN BIDDLECOMBE

A popular Baltimore Avenue hair salon will be shut down Saturday as the entire staff heads to the nation’s capital for the Women’s March on Washington. “It felt really important for us to attend,” said Angel Indelicato, manager at Talking Headz Salon, located at 49th and Baltimore streets in West Philly. “I don’t really know if it’s going to be totally overwhelming or not.” Owner Heather Deforrest decided to shut the salon for a day because all of the staff felt so strongly about attending the Women’s March.
The staff of 12 is meeting before 5 a.m. at 30th Street Station on Saturday to head to Washington. Massive crowds are expected, and there are already multiple restrictions in place: protesters can’t bring signs on sticks, and only clear plastic bags are allowed, no backpacks. “We will all be wearing green handkerchiefs to not lose each other,” Deforrest said. As far as why they’re going? Their opposition to Trump is so deeply felt that it’s hard to explain. “The whys are so obvious,” Deforrest said. “It’s about supporting each other, solidarity and taking action,” Indelicato said. “I have the privilege of not having to work that day … so I need to do this for the people who can’t.” As hair stylists, the Talking Headz staff has been exposed to their customers’ frustrations with
Trump as well. “I’ve always been like, ‘Yeah, it’s obvious why he sucks,’” Indelicato said. “But it’s been really interesting with the clientele that comes in here, hearing a completely different facet of why so many people don’t like him.” Those range from feeling that Trump represents the “silencing of women” and “everyday misogyny”
“It felt really important for us to attend.” Angel Indelicato

Metro World News
Shortly before Donald Trump will be sworn in as president of the United States on Friday, more than 4,200 marijuana joints will be distributed to the throngs of people watching the proceedings unfold. The idea of the event dubbed #Trump420 is to send a message to the country’s next president and promote the legalization of marijuana at a national level, organizers say. Behind the initiative is the DC Cannabis Coalition. After handing out joints, activist are planning to march on the National Mall to demand federal legalization of recreational weed. “We started planning it in November 2016, when we knew that Sen. Jeff Sessions became a nominee for attorney general,” Nikolas R. Schiller, co-founder and director of communications at DCMJ told Metro. He added: “Our fifth installment of the #SmokeSessions campaign
turned into #Trump420. We realized that cannabis is not a partisan issue and since the government in Washington, D.C., is prohibited from opening adult dispensaries, we could provide visitors with free cannabis in order to raise awareness about the unfinished cannabis reform.” There could be setbacks with the marijuana legislation. Sessions has made it clear that he is against marijuana legalization of any kind. “It is important that President-elect Trump puts pressure on Congress to have cannabis withdrawn from the Controlled Substances Act and allow states to move forward with their own laws without the threat of federal interference,” Schiller said.
#Trump420 “There are dozens of volunteers around Washington, D.C., who are helping to gather joints,” a DC Cannabis Coalition representative told Metro. “We hope hundreds, if not thousands, of people will join us on the west side of Dupont Circle, from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. We hope that those from out of town can get a free joint containing cannabis grown in D.C. But more importantly, we hope that President-elect Trump will now come out in full support of the legalization of cannabis.”

Capital mobilizes for inauguration, protests Thousands of security personnel prepare to keep Trump supporters and protesters separated. Washington turned into a virtual fortress on Thursday ahead of Donald Trump’s presidential inauguration, with police ready to step in to separate protesters from Trump supporters at any sign of unrest. Some 900,000 people, both Trump backers and opponents, are expected to flood the nation’s capital for Friday’s inauguration ceremony, according to organizers’ estimates. Events include the swearing-in ceremony on the steps of the Capitol and a parade to the White House along streets thronged with spectators. The number of planned protests and rallies this year is far above what has been typical at recent presidential inaugurations, with some 30 permits granted in Washington for anti-Trump rallies and sympathy protests planned in cities from Boston to Los Angeles, and abroad in cities including London and Sydney. When all the electoral votes were counted Nov. 8, Hillary Clinton wasn’t the only one scrambling to figure out what she was going to do for the next four years. Americans logged on to Canada’s Immigration Department website in such vast numbers that it crashed under their collective despair. Celebrities like Miley Cyrus, Barbra Streisand, Jon Stewart, Lena Dunham and Samuel L. Jack-
son all reportedly threatened to move there. None have. And while we at Metro are not advocating anyone leave this great land of ours for a country that, while beautiful, is only 11 percent habitable, there is a legal process. New president is ready for Day 1 Donald Trump is ready to begin taking executive actions, moving quickly to crack down on immigration, build a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border and roll back policies of President Barack Obama.
President-elect Donald Trump arrived in Washington on Thursday with his family to kick of a weekend of festivities and spoke to a gathering of members of his incoming administration. After being sworn in during a ceremony at the U.S. Capitol on Friday, Trump is poised to wield one of the most powerful tools of his office, the presidential pen, for executive actions that can be implemented without the input of Congress. “He’s committed to not just Day 1, but Day 2, Day 3 of enacting an agenda of real change, and I think that you’re going to see that in the days and weeks to come,” Trump spokesman Sean Spicer said. “GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES” (NETFLIX INSTANT)
We say this a lot, but it’s truly tragic: There just aren’t enough classic Hollywood movies available to stream (at least as part of big streaming service subscriptions). That’s doubly a shame because old movies are the happiest movies ever. At least you can dial up Howard Hawks’ blinding Technicolor musical, with Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell vamping about an ocean liner, digging for rich husbands.

Is this Generation X’s favorite movie ever made? Based on our purely anecdotal, nonscientific research, maybe! Rob Reiner’s fractured fairy tale, which finds room for linguistic debates and some R.O.U.S.es, even features a wraparound story in which the story is being read to a sick Fred Savage. It makes him feel better, and it will probably help you, too. “CHICKEN RUN” (NETFLIX INSTANT)
You can’t find “The Wizard of Oz” on the big streamers, but you can find “The Wiz,” the 1978 film of the all-black version. Diana Ross may be a little too old to play Dorothy, but she’s still Diana Ross, and she’s joined by Michael Jackson, Richard Pryor and Lena Horne.

Beatles’ first movie, one of the purest explosions of joy ever committed to film. It was intended as a quickie cash-in on a presumably passing fad. Instead, it foresaw that they’d become one of the best bands ever by being a great movie, itself — fast, absurdist, as beautiful to see as to hear. (Hot take, though: “Help!” is better.) “BARBERSHOP” (HULU)
Soak up a very different if still hectic era: It was 2002, and Ice Cube gave the world a hangout movie in which the staff and clientele of a Chicago barbershop talked about the issues, busted each other’s balls and made controversial jokes about Rodney King, O.J. and, er, even Rosa Parks.
Remember Eddie Murphy? He used to make movies, didn’t he? This action-comedy was only his fourth film, and it makes the strong case for him as maybe the most entertaining human on the planet. Make Eddie Murphy great again.

Let’s nitpick about the most annoyingly unrealistic parts of TV

I’m taking a break from the heavy stuff this week; I think we’re all going to have plenty of very dark articles to read for a while. So let’s talk about TV. I’ve been marathoning a lot of television for work. I love TV — however, the sheer volume of my watching lately has made me notice a lot of things characters do differently than we do in real life. For example, after about 10 hours of TVwatching yesterday, I kept noticing the strange way shows depict phone calls. No one ever says goodbye. It’s giving me anxiety. How do you know you weren’t hung up on? This isn’t for filming purposes. There is no major plot point that is going to have
to be written out because you added a simple goodbye. Wouldn’t the person on the other end be confused? Is the conversation over? Did she just drive through a canyon? We’ve heard the complaints about the size of apartments since back in the “Friends era. They explained that Monica lived in her grandmother’s rent-controlled place; the size was a plot point. But then there’s “Supergirl. How the hell does she afford that? Her boss says she’s not paid that much! I know they have to do it for camerawork, but it feels so palatial that I can’t help but be pulled out of the story. I want to live in a place where I can spread my arms and not hit anything, too! Let’s talk about sex. Aside from the fact that when the mood strikes and the unspoken moment of “we’re totally going to do this to each other happens, they jump right to it. No
foreplay, no smooching. They’re just going at it. Yes, I know half-hour shows don’t have time for niceties like slow clothing removal, but I’d be seriously disappointed. Less than 60 seconds is pretty sad. Of course, if you do manage to make it into a bed, someone will wake you up with kisses and talk right in your face. (This happens when you wake up from a coma as well.) Do you sleep with breath mints? Is there Binaca somewhere under your pillow? No one does this! Finally, do you notice that people just throw down a pile of cash for the food they ate when they’re making a quick exit? Did you calculate that in your head and pre-count the cash in your pocket when we weren’t looking? I can’t do math that fast, and you can’t, either. What’s your favorite/least favorite TV “shortcut? (SBOJUF $06/5&35014 JOTUBMMFE

Twenty One Pilots’ two broody hit tracks, “Stressed Out” and “Heathens” (of “Suicide Squad” fame), haunted airwaves and earned the duo three nominations at this year’s Grammy Awards — including the elusive Record of the Year. The Columbus, OH natives — Tyler Joseph, singer, and Josh Dun, drums — shift genre gears repeatedly on their 14-track LP, “Blurryface,” making them a tough act to nail down, with threads of bouncy pop-punk and emotional electronica woven throughout Joseph’s cheeky and occasionally
neurotic rhymes. The longtime friends are headed on tour before setting their sights on the festival season, a marathon, rather than a sprint, to promote the critically acclaimed album. Dun calls from Ohio before the tour jumps off for its first stateside date in Providence, Rhode Island. You’re coming up with three Grammy nominations this year — do you remember where you were when you found out? I woke up at home and had text messages from friends in the industry. They were the ones who told me, and I’ll be honest, I’ve never done this before with the Grammys. I’m not educated in how it works, and I didn’t know if [the nominations] were a public thing, or even real. [Laughs] I quickly realized that it was, in fact, real, and people knew about it. I
is such a surreal task in itself. I don’t think it’s a natural feeling to walk in front of that many people and be expected to entertain, but it’s my favorite thing to do. Then, before and after the show, I sit in a dark, quiet room with a candle going and some soft music. I like that dynamic of contrast — feeling very isolated to being in front of thousands of people. It’s that surging of emotions that rids us of our dark thoughts and anxiety.

don’t even know how to describe that feeling. It was a proud moment for us as a band, and knowing what the people who listen to us are capable of doing. Making that much noise has gotten us recognized to this point.
Because you brought it up, I have to ask. What kind of candles do you burn? [Laughs] So there’s this spot here in Columbus called the Candle Lab. I have way too many candles from there. You can create your own scents or pick from what they’ve got. I’ve got all sorts and I light them up in hotel rooms and dressing rooms.
Touring is grueling, but now you also have the impending awards coming up, too. Are you finding yourself stressing or obsessing about it at all? I put [the nominations] aside when I’m thinking about going on stage every night. At this point, walking in front of that many people every night

Twenty One Pilots are nominated for three Grammys this year — record of the year, best rock performance and best pop duo/group performance.
At this point you must be tired of talking about genre-jumping, but I want to know, how much consideration do you give that when putting together a tracklist and order of an album? Honestly, with the order of the tracks, the
main thing we’re thinking about is how it’ll translate live. We were born into the industry by playing live shows, so everything we had for a while was like, “What does that look like live? How does that experience translate to people in the audi-
ence?” When we finished “HeavyDirtySoul,” we were like, “That’s a show intro. So that needs to be the first track on the album.” I think the songs flow into each other to translate live for us. Even before an album is done

recording, we’re like, “OK, Tyler needs to play bass on this song and this song, so let’s put them next to each other so the transition [on stage] is easier.” There’s a lot of that type of conversation and intention when deciding which song goes where.

In the mid-’90s, screenwriters Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski created their own cottage industry, scripting biopics that played like parodies. “Ed Wood” and “The People vs. Larry Flynt” were stirring, Horatio Alger-style tales of triumph, only for figures who were either considered failures or simply unseemly. “The Founder” plays like one of those crossed with a “Wolf of Wall Street”-style takedown of unbridled capitalism. Its hero is a huckster and a cheat and a scoundrel. And he won. He was a loser who became a winner. The only people who come out of the film inspired will be greed monsters, or those who vote them into the White House. The title itself is a dark joke. Our protagonist, one Ray Kroc (Michael Keaton), didn’t found McDonald’s; he just popularized it after swindling the original owners. It’s the mid-’50s and Ray, a longtime get-rich-quick schemer, happens upon a little burger shack in San Bernardino, run by hard-working Dick and Mac McDonald (Nick Offerman and John Carroll Lynch). He’s wowed by their “symphony of
efficiency,” which elides waiters and even inside seating to bring fresh, quality food seconds after ordering. It’s a revolutionary idea, but the McDonalds are loath to franchise, for fear of, among other things, declining quality control. They reluctantly let Ray spread it to the Midwest, fearing this oily, sweaty, desperate fast-talker may try to screw them. He did. That “The Founder” was directed by John Lee Hancock, he of straight-up inspirational fare like “The Blind Side” and “Saving Mr. Banks,” sounds lame on paper. But in practice it’s productively counterintuitive. He’s made a movie that looks and plays saccharine, only it’s about an evil man whose nefarious exploits are the stuff of business legend. The result is a poison-pen letter sneaked into the mainstream, if also the drama equivalent of a one-joke comedy. It does nothing but make its points, important though they are: that America always loves a con man, that there’s a fine line between those who work hard for success, like the McDonald brothers, and those, like Ray Kroc, who want it all, plus more besides. It’s all a touch too tidy and self-satisfied, but that doesn’t mean its blows don’t land. MATT PRIGGE
UNIVERSAL PICTURES
“Split” Despite what you (or he) might think, M. Night Shyamalan is not a twist guy. He’s also not the second coming of Spielberg. He’s barely even a populist. He may think he’s all three, but his attempts at mimicry — at pretending he’s the new Hitchcock, the guy who plays audiences like a piano — fail in interesting ways. Shyamalan makes ambitious, even “arty” numbers that wind up using genre tropes like breadcrumbs, leading us to more emotional, and in some cases deeply troubling, places. So it goes with “Split.” The set-up promises a lean, mean killing machine: Three high school girls are chloroformed by a shaved-head meanie (James McAvoy), awakening, “10 Cloverfield Lane”-style, in a dank, windowless room. Their captor
is named Kevin, though that’s only one of his 23 personalities, including a boy and a prim English woman. The multiple McAvoys promise no immediate harm, but they do keep alluding to “The Beast,” a coming mystery menace to which they may or may not be sacrificed. Thing is, Shyamalan could never make a mere midnight movie. He’s too empathetic, too sincere, and as a result, Kevin — with his very movie ailment — is no mere monster, but someone wrestling with deep and insurmountable trauma. Shyamalan cares, for him and for Anya Taylor-Joy’s Casey, the most prominent captive. McAvoy may have the flashier role(s), but the actress (of “The Witch”) is able, like Haley Joel Osment before her, to transcend her director’s sometimes overly-studied style, beaming deep, fragile humanity and intelligence. in a modest commune-of-sorts in 1979 Santa Barbara — a home lorded over by a surly mother hen (Annette Bening) — they love David Bowie, Talking Heads, Neu! and The Raincoats.
They think raising kids without a dad is fine. They know that Planned Parenthood offers a wide variety of life-saving services. But their great taste and great beliefs don’t always make them happy, or make their lives easier. Not much happens, plotwise, in the latest from Mike Mills (“Beginners”). It’s a deep hang with fascinating characters (also including Greta Gerwig and Elle Fanning) as they eke by, unaware of the incoming Reagan era that will make their lives harder. That makes this another movie of our own scary moment, but it would be insightful, beautiful and hilarious seen at any time. MP

Sixers finally start delivering on promises, but how long can it last? Philly has amazingly won seven of its last nine games. ANDY JASNER @AndyJasner
sports@metro.us
Before going too far with the 76ers’ recent run, let’s be realistic for a moment. They entered Wednesday night six games behind the Chicago Bulls for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Following their 9489 win over the Toronto Raptors, the second-best team in the East, the Sixers improved to 14-26 and gained a half-game on the Bulls. It was the seventh win in nine games for the Sixers. Way beyond the numbers is this: The Sixers are becoming relevant again in the Philadelphia sports landscape. The crowd of 17,223 was energetic and moved to a fever pitch when Rookie of the Year candidate and possible AllStar Joel Embiid cupped his hands to ears a la Allen Iverson back in the day. Chants of “Trust the process are morphing into “MVP! for Embiid. The big man was dominant with 26 points, nine rebounds and two blocked shots. This was the 10th-

straight game Embiid scored 20 or more points without playing more than 30 minutes. Truly amazing. Now the Raptors were on the second leg of a back-to-back trip and forward DeMarre Carroll left the game in the second half with a neck injury.
Every team goes through trials and tribulations in the rigorous NBA. The Sixers were due for some good fortune after three-plus seasons of hard luck and a bucketful of losses. “We’re playing with a spirit, Sixers coach Brett Brown said. “We’re play-

ing with a defensive mindset. There is a belief within each other that is the best since I’ve been here. Rewind to last season where the Sixers began 1-30 and finished a disastrous 10-72. After 37 wins in the two seasons before that, fans had to wonder when this franchise would
begin to turn around. Thanks to Embiid’s unbelievably rapid development, the Sixers are giving their fans plenty to be upbeat about looking ahead. “The fans are fantastic, Brown said. “We’re all kind of starving for some success, starving for good
feelings and some wins. More and more Embiid jerseys are popping up around the Wells Fargo Center. Rightfully so. Had Embiid been healthy, he would have been the No. 1 overall pick in the 2014 draft. The Sixers were fortunate to grab him at No. 3 and did they ever make the right choice. Was it lucky? Sure. But go back to Andrew Bynum, who never suited up for the Sixers. With a franchise cornerstone, the Sixers are on their way. Pieces are falling in around Embiid like Dario Saric, Ersan Ilyasova and, eventually, Ben Simmons. The fans are all in. “I’m trying to give effort not just this game but every game, Saric said. “I had the opportunity to get blocks and the fans started going crazy. As a player, you like it. Of course you like it. There’s a lot to like these days. The next five games will continue to serve as a litmus test with home games against Portland, the Los Angeles Clippers and Houston coupled with trips to Atlanta and Milwaukee. Nothing will come easy between Jan. 20-27. Compared to the past, this is a welcome change for everyone.

This isn’t what Dario Saric is used to. The proud Croatian was drafted by the Sixers in 2014 but played in Europe for two seasons before coming to Philadelphia. And after the Sixers’ captivating 94-89 win against the Raptors in a packed and wild Wells Fargo Center, the rookie couldn’t help but compare American crowds to those from Europe. “Crowds there are different, Saric said. “They stand the whole time and will be singing during the entire game. ... Here they are great, but it’s more about entertainment. In Europe they wouldn’t be drinking beers or eating Buffalo wings. Saric did his fair share of entertaining in Wednesday’s win, making back-to-back blocks with his hands outstretched toward the rim to fire up the fans, and in the fourth quarter pretty much single-handedly keeping the team in the game with
Joel Embiid sitting on the sidelines (Philly was plus20 with Embiid on the floor and minus-15 without him). “That is the secondbest offensive team in the NBA, they average I think 114 points and we held them to 89, Sixers head coach Brett Brown said. “It started, to me, with Dario having that fantastic run with multiple blocks. There were other strong contributors but he stood out. ... He was a real instigator getting us going. “Dario never blocks shots and he had two in a row, Embiid said, explaining to reporters his wild and encouraging reaction to the play on the sideline. “He was at the rim like that blocking [Jared] Sullinger. That’s the play we need and the crowd was getting into it. I am just glad he’s here with us like he promised he was going to be. Trolling reporters after his interview concluded in the 76ers locker room, Embiid shouted, “He wasn’t going to come, he wasn’t going to come, trust the process, playfully poking at the doubters of Sam Hinkie’s now infamous process — the one that gave Embiid his beloved nickname. Saric is second among all NBA rookie scorers and
rebounders, trailing only teammate Embiid in that category. The numbers suggest that perhaps he is being overshadowed by his 7-foot-2 phenom of a teammate — a sentiment his head coach shares. “If Joel Embiid weren’t in the league you’d have to talk about [Saric] in consideration for rookie of the year, Brown said. “We should really look at what he’s doing as a rookie. There’s an appeal he has developed from our fans, They respect him, how can you not? He is so blue collar. The plays that he makes, the effort-based plays, the physical plays, they count for everything. “I hope he realizes we appreciate his passion and we appreciate the way he plays. If nothing else, Philadelphia fans love hustle. And it’s an attribute Saric has in spades. Whether or not he ever garners the attention or fame Embiid inevitably will, he could be a key piece for a competitive Sixers team in the not so distant future. “Sometimes you have a game where you are doing badly, but other times you can give the team its energy and I tried to give the team energy and I did it well, the 6-foot-10 Saric said. “I want to win the game. It’s an easy answer.

Best bets for Championship Sunday Where to place your money for the AFC and NFC championship games. ROBERT CRISCOLA @ItsGood2BeKing sports@metro.us
Green Bay Packers at Atlanta Falcons (-4.5) Green Bay will be looking to avenge a 33-32 defeat at the Georgia Dome from Oct. 30 when the NFC Championship game kicks off on Sunday (3:05 p.m., Fox). The Packers have won their last eight contests (7-1 against the spread) and Aaron Rodgers has been unstoppable, amassing at least 30 points in his last six tilts. That includes Green Bay’s dramatic 34-31 win over Dallas last week in which Jordy Nelson didn’t play (he’s considered doubtful this week). The Falcons held the Seahawks’ offense in check last week but Seattle had only averaged 15 points per game on the road this season. Rodgers and company present a far sterner challenge for the league’s 25th-ranked defense. Atlanta’s offense has been firing on all cylinders lately, topping

some of the big-play potential of the Falcons’ point producers. Matt Ryan’s frustration could be compounded when the Packers’ sixth-rated QB attackers (40 sacks in the regular season) get through an O-line that’s allowed Ryan to be dropped 37 times this season (22nd in the league). draws a very favorable matchup against the NFL’s 12th-rated defense (16th in passing). It took an incredible effort by the Broncos’ pass rushers to stymie Brady in last year’s AFC Championship game, and a similar performance will be required from Pittsburgh. And while the Steelers brought the QB down 38 times this season (ninth in the league), they managed just one sack against the Chiefs last week and the Patriots’ O-line has excelled at keeping their QB upright this year (24 sacks allowed, fifth-best
